NEWS FROM SAINT HENRY SCHOOL | SUMMER 2022

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK SCHOOL CALENDAR 2022-2023

Dear Saint Henry Family, Friends, and Alumni,

I hope you enjoy this beautiful edition of the Pinnacle. When I reflect on the 2021-2022 school year, I am filled with immense gratitude to God for the many blessings bestowed on our precious school. I continue to marvel at the dedication of the faculty and staff, who always seem to keep the students on “point” throughout covid challenges and societal conflicts and pressures. Now more than ever, the need for Catholic schools is paramount.

When covid-19 struck, our school, along with other Catholic and private schools, appeared to be in a threatening position due to forced remote teaching/learning and an economic downturn affecting families nationwide. Our commitment to opening safely August 2020 and our dedication to the wonderful happenings in our classrooms, school, and community served as a beacon of light to many new families.

This coming school year we will open our doors with an enrollment of over 700 students. The last time we had an enrollment this large was 14 years ago (the 2008-2009 school year). The foundation and strength of Saint Henry School is our love and commitment to our Catholic faith and community.

Your financial support, especially with tuition assistance, is paving the way for many of our children who may otherwise not have a chance to experience Catholic education. I can assure you that your financial investment in our youth is yielding a harvest at Saint Henry School.

I am proud of our students. I am proud of the beautiful young men and women that I see graduate each year. Our students can articulate their faith with intelligence and conviction. I continue to hear from the high schools that the Saint Henry students are excellently prepared with the majority testing into honors classes. Academic excellence and integrity are always at the forefront of our learning environment at Saint Henry School.

May God continue to bless you and your families. You remain in my daily prayers. Please pray for me that I will continue to lead our school for the glory of God.

Sincerely in Christ,

OUR MOTTO Educating for life in Christ

OUR MISSION

Faithful to the teaching of the Catholic Church, Saint Henry School builds the kingdom of God by forming students in faith, academic integrity, and service to others.

FAREWELL TO FACULTY

The ending of a school year is always bittersweet but saying goodbye to long-time teachers is especially difficult. This year is no different.

After 29 years of teaching at Saint Henry School, “Happy Retirement” is wished to one of the best, Ms. Sandi Elder. Ms. Elder has been a familiar face at Tiger Town for many years. Ms. Elder followed in her mother’s footsteps to become a well-known and well-loved teacher. Ms. Elder plans to retire near her grandchildren and enjoy many adventures with them.

Mr. Jeff Schletzer retires after 41 years of teaching band at Father Ryan High School, Saint Henry School, and many other schools throughout the diocese. Mr. Schletzer leaves a permanent mark on the lives of many students to whom he instilled a love for music. He looks forward to time with his grandchildren and traveling with his wife, Sheree, when she retires from being a nurse.

Mrs. Suzanne Armbruster is retiring after 14 years at Saint Henry School. Mrs. Armbruster was instrumental in starting the Pre-K program. She came with experience and knowledge that helped the new program be as successful as it could be. Mrs. Armbruster will still be seen around Tiger Town as a substitute teacher when needed in the Pre-K when she is not spending time with her new grand-baby.

Mrs. Kathy McDonnell has been an aide in our Pre-K classrooms for six years. Her patience and kindness shown to all will be missed, but we are thankful that she has agreed to come back often as a substitute teacher.

Mrs. Elizabeth Allred has taught 1st grade for four years. She was an integral part of her 1st grade team. She leaves to be able to take care of her baby boy, who will hopefully be a Tiger someday just like she was!

Mrs. Cindy Cioffi leaves us after four years as a Kindergarten aide. Her love of children was seen in all aspects of her job, whether in the classroom or on the playground.

Sister Mary Emily taught at Saint Henry School for three years starting out in 2nd grade and then moving to 5th-6th grade Religion for two years. Her love of her faith was apparent in all her classes and religion lessons. Her current assignment has her in Ireland.

Ms. Taylor Hoback worked as a Pre-K aide for three years in both the 3-year-old and the 4-year-old classrooms. She has a spark that the children loved to be around.

Sister Mary Margaret leaves us after two short but wonderful years teaching 2nd grade. Her joy of teaching was evident daily in her contagious smile and laughter. Her new assignment takes her across the pond to Italy. Arrivederci, Sister Mary Margaret!

Sister Maria Karol taught Spanish at Saint Henry School for two years. She brought

such a fun way of learning to the classrooms. She was seen every morning greeting the children as they entered the building. Her new assignment takes her to another school within the Diocese of Nashville. St. Joseph School is lucky to have her.

KINDERGARTEN COLLECTS FOR ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

Recently the Saint Henry School Kindergarten (pictured above), taught by Ms. Michelle Armbruster, collected pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters during Lent with which they learned certain math skills. They then decided to donate all $128 of coins with their prayers to support the St. Vincent DePaul Society in their service to the poor and needy in our community. “How special and inspirational to witness these young children exhibit such Christian values. The SVDP team had a few of their Vincentians visit and personally thank the class and their teacher for this example of Matthew 25:35-40!” Mr. Ron Szejner stated.

AN ACT OF HUMILITY

Pre-Kindergarten re-enacted the Last Supper during Holy Week. Mrs. Sizemore washed every Tiger Cub's feet and they learned why Jesus did this on the night of the last supper for His disciples. It was an incredibly special moment.

SUPPORTING SPECIAL OLYMPICS

For the first-grade service project, students collected items for the Special Olympics (pictured below). These items were sent to the athletes for when they participated in this year's Summer Games in Orlando!

TIGERS CARE FOR BABY CHICKS

Saint Henry School was blessed this year to witness God bringing new baby chicks into existence. Mr. Robinson, the 7th/8th grade science teacher, brought in eggs from his farm and the 7th and 8th graders had the opportunity to incubate the eggs in the science classroom. As the eggs developed, they were able to candle them and see the development of the new babies. Exactly 21 days (about three weeks) later they watched a miracle as the chicks broke open their shells and hatched. Not only did the Junior High get to witness this wonderful event, but every class in the building also came by to see the hatchlings. The students loved getting to learn about the process of hatching chicks, but even more they loved getting to hold and interact with the babies.

HOME AND SCHOOL NEWS

The 2021-2022 school year was another enormous success for the Saint Henry School Home & School Association thanks to the wonderful Saint Henry School parents. Fundraising efforts this year raised over $130,000! The biggest portion of this was from the return of the Tiger Town Boogie which brought in over $85,000. The Boogie was a wonderful day thanks to many helping hands, but especially thanks to Tasha and Steven Kennard who led this event again as well as the Dacus family who assisted ahead of leading the charge for this event next year. Saint Henry School students love their role in this fundraiser, and what an incredible job they did!

The Home and School Association is looking to exceed this year’s fundraising revenue and increase parent involvement in their plans for the 2022-2023 school year. Head room parents have been assigned and will be ready to hit the ground running at the beginning of the school year. New committees are being added to the fabric of the organization and will allow for more parents to be involved. In July there will be announcements regarding the Bonfire (21+ event) and Carnival (all ages) along with details as to how parents can get involved in these and other school events. After a twoyear pause, the Home and School Association is ready to bring these events back and make them better than ever. Mark all calendars! The Bonfire will take place on Friday, November 4, 2022, and the Carnival is scheduled for Saturday, November 5, 2022.

A WARM WELCOME TO SAINT HENRY’S NEW STAFF

The upcoming school year welcomes new members to the Saint Henry School community. These new members bring a wealth of knowledge, experience, and vibrant personalities that will be invaluable to the students and community. Read below to learn a bit about them.

Maria began teaching elementary grades, primarily 4th and 5th grades. She began at St. Gertrude’s in Cincinnati, Ohio. She then taught at St. Mary’s in Oakridge, Tennessee, and went on to teach nursing at Aquinas here in Nashville. She went back to teaching elementary grades at St. Anthony in D.C. and comes to Saint Henry School from her current assignment at St. Thomas Aquinas Regional School in Woodbridge, VA.

Sister Maria Lucia, O.P. will teach 2nd grade. She comes to Saint Henry School from St. Joseph Catholic School in Cottleville, Missouri where she also taught 2nd grade. Sr. Maria Lucia is originally from Alabama and made certain to specify that she is an Alabama fan, punctuating that fact with an enthusiastic, “Roll Tide!” Assistant Principal, Mrs. Katie Long, will be very happy to hear this news. Sr. Maria Lucia has four siblings: three brothers and one sister. Of her four siblings, three serve in the U.S. Air Force. Sr. Maria Lucia loves all sports and particularly enjoys playing soccer. She is very much looking forward to the World Cup this year.

Ms. Jamie Francis will teach 1st grade. Ms. Francis was born and raised in Annapolis, Maryland, but moved to Park City, Utah, in her Junior year of High School. She stayed out west for her college years where she graduated from Westminster College with a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education and a minor in Special Education and ESL. At Westminster she played Division II lacrosse all four years. Ms. Francis is not completely new to Nashville, having recently received her Master's of Education from Vanderbilt University. Living in Nashville has her close to her two older sisters, one living in Charlotte and the other in Atlanta. Ms. Francis enjoys spending her free time in the great outdoors skiing, biking, hiking, and exploring new restaurants. She also enjoys sharing her passion for sports. She is a Celtics and Ravens fan and has a fluffy fouryear-old Labradoodle named Bleu.

Mrs. Katherine Massey will be a PreK 4 teacher. Mrs. Massey is originally from Jonesborough, which happens to be the oldest town in Tennessee. She received her bachelor's from MTSU in Anthropology and her Master's in Early Childhood Education from East TN State

University. She and her husband, John, have been married for 15 years and have two daughters, Georgia who will be in 4th grade and Annie Rose who will be in 3rd grade. Mrs. Massey loves reading, gardening, puzzles, and playing board and card games with her family. She also loves music, so much that she always has music playing when she is home. Those who know Mrs. Massey well call her Katy instead of Katherine.

Ms. Becca Lewis will teach 4th grade. Ms. Lewis started teaching at Saint Henry School the last few weeks of this past school year in the 5th grade classroom when Sister Mary Emily had to leave for her new assignment in Ireland. Ms. Lewis is originally from Fanwood, New Jersey. She attended Belmont University where she received her B.S. in Education and History. She loves to take walks with her dog, Franklin. She also enjoys reading, watching movies, and cheering on the Mets and the Jets.

Sister Maria, O.P. will teach 5th and 6th grade Religion. Prior to entering the convent and the classroom, Sister Maria was an ER Trauma Nurse for eight years in Mobile, Alabama. After entering the convent, Sister

Mr. Ben Ennis will be an aide in the Hand In Hand Options program at Saint Henry School. Mr. Ennis is originally from Southern California, until he moved to Hendersonville, TN, where he graduated from John Paull II Preparatory School. He went on to graduate with a degree in History from Sewanee, The University of the South, where he also played on the baseball team as a pitcher. Having played baseball for 19 years, he is also a major fan. Mr. Ennis has traveled to 14 MLB stadiums thus far! Fun fact, Mr. Ennis’s middle name is Indiana, named after the famous fictional professor of archaeology from the 1980’s Dr. Henry Walton “Indiana” Jones.

Louis Keller will be the Kindergarten aide in Mrs. Vaillancourt’s classroom. Mr. Keller earned his Bachelor’s in Education from MTSU and is currently pursuing his Master’s in Teaching at Trevecca Nazarene. Mr. Keller has been married for 10 years and has two children, Brynne going into 3rd grade and Ruby who will be in PreK4 here at Saint Henry. Bruce is Mr. Keller’s energetic dog. Boris and Tom are his cats, and Mr. Keller says, “They tolerate all of us living with them.” Fun fact, when Mr. Keller was a student at Father Ryan High School, he was recognized as World Champion Percussionist with the Father Ryan Drumline.

KATHERINE MASSEY JAMIE FRANCIS BECCA LEWIS SISTER MARIA BEN ENNIS SISTER MARIA LUCIA

Mrs. Katie Lopez will be an aide in the PreK 3 and 4 classrooms. Mrs. Lopez was born and raised in Nashville, TN. She attended Ensworth, went onto St. Cecilia Academy for high school, and then pursued her degree from North Arkansas College. Her husband, John, was active-duty Navy for eight years and is now in the Navy reserves. Mrs. Lopez and her husband have two children, Grant, who graduated from Saint Henry School this past May, and Lisa, who will be a 7th grader. They also have two King Charles Cavaliers (Charlotte and Wilbur), two cats (Molly and Angel), and an Axolotl named Kirby. When she has spare time, she enjoys sewing and crafting and her favorite place (outside of Nashville, of course) is St. John’s Island, SC!

Mary Sevier Moore will be an aide in the Hand In Hand Options program. Mrs. Moore is a graduate of Saint Henry School and Father Ryan High School, and UT Knoxville with a Bachelor’s in Child and Family Studies. She recalls her favorite teacher from Saint Henry School, Mrs. Rhea Forte, and wanting to be just like her. Mrs. Moore got her esthetician’s license and worked in dermatology doing facials, chemical peels, and corrective makeup until she had her first child. She is married to Jason Moore of Henderson, KY, and they have five children: son, Sevier, upcoming first-year student at UT Knoxville; son, Oakley, rising sophomore at FRHS; and three children at SHS: daughter Kearney (7th), son Donovan (4th), and daughter Mercer (Kindergarten). She also has some four-legged family members: Goldie (her black Goldendoodle), and Hendo (short

for Hendersonville, KY) who is a white goldendoodle. In her free time, she enjoys daily Mass, shopping at Aldi and Trader Joe’s, lunch with friends, pedicures, and practicing Soulcore (rosary workouts). Mrs. Moore is also training to be a Soulcore leader.

Ms. Fallon Nixon will teach computer/ STEM for K through 5th. Ms. Nixon is from Lake Charles, Louisiana, where she attended Catholic school through high school. She received her Bachelor’s in Elementary Education from LSU which means she is already used to being a Tiger! Ms. Fallon taught 2nd grade for two years in a southeast Louisiana public school then decided to take a leap of faith and move to Nashville. She enjoys working out, shopping, travel, cooking, baking, and spending time with friends and family. Ms. Fallon has seven siblings; she is the second oldest and her youngest sibling is six years old.

Jennifer Nordhoff will be the PreK4 aide working with Mrs. Boyd. Born in Big Springs, Texas, Mrs. Nordhoff has called middle Tennessee home since moving here as an infant. She graduated from Middle Tennessee State University with a Business Degree in Marketing. After staying home with two young sons until their preschool years, she began working as a teacher’s aide for a Franklin preschool. Years later, she moved into the role of teacher and discovered her passion for working with preschoolaged children, which she has done for 14 years thus far. Mrs. Nordhoff has been married to her husband, Mike, for 27 years. They live in Franklin and have two boys, Ethan who is 21 years old, and Ben who is 18 years old. Mrs. Nordhoff enjoys long walks, reading, and time

with family. Something that most people would not know about Mrs. Nordhoff is that she is a fraternal twin. Her twin brother, Jason, and his family live in Hoover, AL.

Mr. Nick Rubadeau will be our “coach” for 1st and 3rd grade helping students with a wide range of activities. Mr. Rubadeau is a familiar face at Saint Henry School, both in the classroom as a frequent substitute and aide these past few years, as well as being a current parent. He and his wife, Gloria, are the parents of rising 6th grader, Isa Rubadeau, and they also have two dogs (Hazel and Shepherd). Mr. Rubadeau spent his middle and high school years in Lebanon, Indiana, then went on to Purdue University where he received his B.A. in English Literature. He enjoys crossword puzzles, reading, and watching college sports. He comes from a large family, having three brothers and three sisters and Mr. Rubadeau is the second oldest.

Ms. Maddie Sampson will teach music to K through 4th, 5th grade handbells, and 6th grade choir. Ms. Sampson grew up right here in Nashville and has been a Tiger since she herself was a student in Mrs. Luton’s Kindergarten class at Saint Henry School. She graduated from Saint Henry School in 2011 and Father Ryan High School in 2015. Ms. Sampson attended BirminghamSouthern College and studied Business Administration and Music as a double major, and is currently pursuing her Master’s in Education at Lipscomb University. Her parents, Don and Molly Sampson, are long time parishioners of Saint Henry Church, her sister Emma also graduated Saint Henry School (2010), and she has a sweet puppy named Sadie. While she claims to be clumsy, she is quite the athlete, having played school volleyball, basketball, soccer, dance, cheer, and golf. She loves being outside, going to movies and concerts, reading, hanging out with friends and family, and she is also a huge baseball fan.

SPRING SPORTS UPDATE

Saint Henry School’s athletic teams had a busy year and enjoyed the normalcy of this year. The 5th & 6th grade volleyball teams had an exciting season, the 6th-8th golf team swung the clubs well, a flag football program was started for 1st-4th graders, and the soccer teams played hard during the season with the 7th and 8th grade varsity team winning the League and Tournament Championship! Preparations are already happening for the fall sports season.

There were four 5th & 6th grade volleyball teams this year. Each team’s skill level grew a great deal during the season. All the teams finished with winning records with several of them having only lost one or two matches the entire season. The future looks bright for the volleyball program at Saint Henry School! The golf team also had a successful season. There was no team championship this year, but that did not stop the Tigers from showing their stripes. Connor Cahill won the end of the season tournament, and the title of Best Overall Player for Division I. Thomas Johns also had a strong showing, coming in third during the end of the season tournament. Eli Samuelson finished second in the Division II tournament and Bridget Steiner was voted Most Improved Golfer this year!

The diocese attempted to start a flag football league right before covid hit and it was exciting to see this program finally come to fruition this year. The league was for 1st-4th grade and the Tigers had threteams during this inaugural season. There was one 3rd & 4th grade team and it was fun watching their teamwork and skill grow during the season. The two 1st & 2nd grade teams had great seasons as well, and Coach Wilson’s team went undefeated! The diocese is already discussing the option to expand this program to other grades during the upcoming season.

The spring season concluded with soccer and the Tigers had a strong showing this year again with one 5th and 6th grade team and two 7th & 8th grade teams consisting of a Junior Varsity and a Varsity team. The 5th & 6th grade team had a fantastic season and lost only one game during the season. The 7th & 8th grade teams (JV and V) both were successful this year in the varsity division. The JV team won their first round of the tournament, avenging a loss from earlier in the season, and lost in the semi-finals. The varsity team finished the season undefeated and won the League Championship. They backed up that

performance coming out the champions of the end of season tournament as well!

The spring sports season was an enormous success, and all the teams had a great showing. Preparations are already underway for the fall athletic season at Tiger Town. The athletic program would not be a success without hard work and commitment from the athletes and coaches.

FIRST LEGO LEAGUE “Building” leaders and problem solvers

Congratulations to the First Lego League teams this season. Saint Henry School was pleased to add a second team this school year. Students explored transportation and logistics as part of this year’s “Cargo Connect” theme. They interviewed professionals in the field, toured the Nashville International Airport and Tennessee Department of Transportation’s Region 3 Station, and even flew drones as part of their research! The TIGERS (Thoughtful, Innovative, Grateful, Engineers, Researchers, and Students) built and programmed competitive autonomous robots using the Lego spike Prime kit, and learned how to work together as a team and mentor peers.

First Lego League took place in person at the Regional and State levels in Tennessee. Both teams competed at the Regional Tournament in December. The Saint Henry Black team, which is the returning team, took home 1st place for their Innovation Project. For this project they created an app to help report potholes using GPS coordinates. Using data from sensors on the automobile, the app would send a message to appropriate road authorities (TDoT, County, Metro) to notify them of the problem areas that needed to be fixed. Placing at the Regional Tournament allowed the Black Team to continue practicing and then competes at the State Championship Tournament in February where they received 2nd place for Core Values. There were 46 teams present.

The Core Values Award celebrates a team that displays extraordinary enthusiasm and spirit. The judges said that the Saint Henry School Team “had outstanding teamwork, innovative thinking, and gracious attitudes.”

The school is proud of all team members! The Black Team members are Emma Kate Kittrell, Abby Greer, Audrey Spencer, Lisa Lopez, George Penne, Isa Rubadeau, John Spencer, and Noah Wiley. The Gold Team members are Ruth Armour, Patrick Barnett, Mollie Donlon, Mikey LaLonde, Anderson Pillow, Henry Thomas, Tessa Brodhag, Maria Sanchez-Garcia, and Roberto Sergio.
