FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Dear Saint Henry Parents, Grandparents, Friends, and Alumni, Greetings from the amazing Tiger Town! It is an honor to, once again, share the wonderful news that Saint Henry School was voted “Best Private School” and “Best Preschool” in the Tennessean’s “Best of Music City” Community Choice Awards. This is the 2nd year in a row that we receive this prestigious recognition and one we humbly celebrate as it reinforces the excellence in our academics and our strong Catholic identity. At the beginning of this year, Pope Francis inaugurated this current year, 2024, as a Year of Prayer in preparation for the newly announced Jubilee year in 2025. The theme for the Jubilee in 2025 is Pilgrims of Hope. When I learned of the theme and the year of preparation preceding it, I immediately began to plan and dream of ways to build upon our already strong structure of prayer within the halls and classrooms of Saint Henry School. There are countless rich opportunities in faith formation that Catholic education provides. In the culmination of eighth grade year, and with the graces of the sacrament of Confirmation, Saint Henry students can articulate their faith with confidence and witness to the relationship they continue to strengthen with the person of Jesus Christ. Also included in this issue of the Pinnacle is our Annual Report for the 2022-2023 fiscal year, which ended June 30, 2023. We THANK YOU for your gifts to Saint Henry School. We would cease to exist without the ongoing collaboration and various ways of support that you offer. Catholic schools DO make a difference in the life of each child, and consequently, in strengthening the faith life of each family enrolled.

SAINT HENRY WINS A SECOND TIME! For the second year in a row, Saint Henry School celebrated being named the “Best Private School” and “Best Pre-School” in The Tennessean’s annual “Best of Music City” Community Choice Awards. This designation is widely recognized throughout the metro Nashville community and a distinct honor. Principal Sister Mary Elizabeth, accompanied by Shana Druffner, Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Mrs. Katie Long, Assistant Principal, and Mrs. Katherine Massey, Interim Director of Pre-School, and faculty members represented Saint Henry at the awards gala held at the Music City Center on December 8, 2023.

CASTRILLO SISTERS DOMINATE SPELLING BEES The annual Saint Henry Spelling Bee, held on October 5, 2023, was an intense contest led by announcer Sr. Mary Dominic, O.P., and judged by Mr. Paul Davis from Father Ryan High School, Mrs. Michelle Barber from Pope Prep, and Sr. Dominic, O.P., from Saint Cecilia Academy. After two hours and a record-setting 47 rounds, the Castrillo sisters, Lilly (7th grade) and Livia (6th grade) tied for the title of Champion! Both sisters earned a place at the Diocesan Spelling Bee.
SCHOOL BLESSING
Lilly and Livia were among the sixteen competitors from fifteen Diocesan Catholic schools in attendance at the championship Spelling Bee held at the Catholic Pastoral Center on Wednesday, November 15. Both girls performed well and, after nine rounds of competition, Livia took home the trophy! How did the sisters achieve such success? It was truly a family affair. According to their mother, Stephanie, the girls learned discipline as they studied together every day before and after school. In spite of their preparations, during the competition Stephanie said her "heart was racing the entire time. I was terrified, but I could not be more proud." Their father, Carlos, added, "(It) was a nice treat that they both made it, and the fact that they got here and both did well, we're really happy about that." FARM TO TABLE Each day, as students, faculty, and staff walk through the halls, they can't miss the appetizing smells wafting from the cafeteria. Saint Henry's lunch menu includes favorites like pizza served with the most delectible green beans, fan-favorite fish tacos, and savory, saucy meatball subs... and on occassion, as a special treat, fromscratch cinnamon rolls! During the late fall and winter months, cafeteria manager Mrs. Laurel Williams offers her famous soups. One recent fall day, warm and nourishing homemade chicken noodle soup was served. What made this batch extra special? It contained carrots grown, tended, and harvested by Saint Henry's 8th grade science students as they learned valuable lessons in farm-to-table agriculture.

OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE A Celebration of Faith and Culture The Saint Henry School all-school Mass on December 12, 2023, included cultural experiences many students had never experienced before. The Mass, celebrated by Bishop J. Mark Spalding, included a real mariachi band which led the school in las alabanzas del Señor (praises of the Lord), and Aztec Dancers, to the rhythm of drums, honored Mary by lining the aisles before and after Mass with their bright customs and native dance. December 12 was the Feast Day of our Lady of Guadalupe, and the Saint Henry celebration was a glimpse of how Nashville parishes Sagrado Corazon and Our Lady of Guadalupe were also celebrating that same day.

The idea of having an authentic celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe began with Principal Sister Mary Elizabeth, who had overseen such events in other schools. She asked Carolina Garcia (5-8 Spanish) and Jessica Spence (Pre-K3) to

The skit told the story of how in 1531, Mary appeared to a Native Mexican named Juan Diego. She asked him to go to the bishop and tell him that she wanted a Church built where she had appeared. The bishop asked for a sign, so Our Lady filled Juan Diego’s tilma (cloak) with roses. When Juan Diego let the flowers fall before the Bishop, Mary’s Image was imprinted on it and remains there today.

As time has progressed, science has contributed to more amazing discoveries about the tilma, like the tiny images of 13 human figures in Mary’s eyes, and the stars on her mantle being in the position they would have been in at the time Juan Diego was talking to the bishop.

The yearly faculty retreat had Our Lady’s appearance as a theme, and the week before the Mass, Sister Felicity (7-8 Religion) led a family faith formation night on the online platform Microsoft TEAMS; 92 families tuned in! This event was the beginning of a way for the Saint Henry Community to be united in learning about and celebrating a topic again in the future.

TIGERS GOT TALENT! John Shoemaker (SHS Class of 2016), a senior at Clemson University, is currently serving as the President of the Interfraternity Council overseeing and governing fraternity operations. John is a member of Phi Gamma Alpha, a University tour guide, and Thomas F Chapman Leadership Scholar.
Stella Perrazini (SHS Class of 2019), a graduate of Saint Cecilia's Class of 2023, will attend the U.S. Naval Academy Preparatory School for ten months, then on to the US Naval Academy. Stella also received appointments to the Coast Guard Academy, Merchant Marines, West Point, and the Air Force Academy!

Gianna McAuley (SHS Class of 2023), a current Saint Cecilia Academy student, has published a 14-week devotional journal (available from Amazon)! Gianna's journal is designed to be worked all at once or one week at a time.
Two students from Saint Henry School’s Class of 2020 have been named National Merit Commended Scholars! Allison Cliffel (above left) and Grace Sizemore (above right) earned PSAT scores in the top three percent to receive this honor. Allison is a senior at Saint Cecilia Acadmy where she is a member of the National Honor Society, the Bowling team, Sodality Club, Adventure Club, Mary’s Meals, Best Buddies, and Camp SCA helper. Grace is a senior at Father Ryan where she is a member of the National Honor Society, Cum Laude Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Gadfly, Purple Masque Players, Speech and Debate team, and Girls LaCrosse team. Congratulations to Allison and Grace!
Kate McDonnell (SHS Class of 2019), a graduate of Father Ryan's Class of 2023, is a freshman member of the University of Notre Dame Drumline (pictured below left)! Kate’s percussionist talents were nurtured early on at Tiger Town (pictured below right) when she represented Saint Henry in the 7th-8th Grade Mid-State Band and was ranked #2 out of the over 100 percussionists who auditioned back then.

Saint Henry's alums tuning into WSMV News on January 19, 2024, may have recognized the featured "Good Samaratin" as former Saint Henry Tiger Lucas Daggs (Class of 2015)! After Nashville was blanketed with nearly 8-inches of snow, Lucas spent three days helping the stranded pulling vehicles out of ditches and offering rides. When asked why he chose to take on such work he explained, "I thought, well, I might as well go help people."

FALL & WINTER SPORTS UPDATE Saint Henry School's Athletics Department was active during the fall season. From the 7th/8th grade volleyball teams to the K-8th grade cross country team to the 5th and 6th grade flag football teams, the Tigers enjoyed a lot of success on the court and field. Volleyball Saint Henry's fielded four 7th/8th grade volleyball teams this year: two varsity and two junior varsity. Every team played hard all season long and improved upon their skills. Both varsity teams enjoyed success this year. Gold team played well every week and represented SHS proudly. Black team finished first in the regular season and were League Champions with an undefeated record of 21-0! The two junior varsity volleyball teams had great seasons this year, too. JV Gold team had big wins over St. Bernard and Christ the King, while JV Black defeated both St. John Vianney and St. Bernard! It was clear how much both teams progressed during the season. The athletic directors and coaches are proud of their accomplishments and everyone is excited for next season! Cross Country Saint Henry had a very successful crosscountry season with over 100 students in Kindergarten through 8th grade participating! There were only four meets this year and events were held at Overbrook School. During the championship meet at the end of the season, the varsity boys and girls teams ran hard and represented Saint Henry proudly. The girls varsity team finished 4th overall! The girls team also had three individual runners who placed at the championship meet: Lily Orellana finished 7th, Jezzy Wiest finished 10th, and Gabriela Perez finished

20th! Saint Henry had several other runners perform well in the lower grades as well. They include Miriam Adams, Margaret Ritter, Louis Ritter, Evans Valiquette (K-1st); Annie Elizabeth Christian, Lucille Kienzler, Milli Cognetti, Samson Marchetti (2nd-3rd); and Sarah Reilly, Christian Orellana, and Owen Stricklin (4th-5th). The SHS cross country program continues to be Saint Henry's most popular sport and 20242025 looks to be no different. Flag Football This was the second year for the 5th/6th grade flag football program, and Saint Henry added a second team this year. Both teams enjoyed their seasons, playing tough, having fun, and learning a lot throughout the season. Saint Henry School hopes to add 7th/8th grade flag football next school year, and looks forward to the 1st-4th grade flag football to kick off this spring! As these programs continue to show signs of success, the Diocesan Athletic Council hopes the league will continue to grow in the future. Basketball The basketball season is currently underway with Saint Henry School fielding nineteen
teams this year! The athletes are excited to be playing, gaining valuable experience and improving on the court, and having fun with their teammates. The end of the season will be here soon, and the 7th/8th grade teams will be gearing up for the tournament. Good luck to all the teams during the remainder of the season. New Uniforms The athletic department was blessed to be able to acquire brand new, fully sublimated uniforms (pictured below) for every player in the volleyball and basketball programs. These uniforms look great and will provide these teams many years of use thanks to the support of the parents and administration in this endeavor.

It's always a treat when community helpers visit Tiger Town, but for a few Saint Henry students, it was an opportunity to proudly introduce their dads to their classmates and teachers! Firefighter Ryan Hayes (pictured left top), father of Haddie (2nd grade) and Hayden (4th grade), visited the 2nd grade to talk about fire safety. He also explained his job as a firefighter and how the specialized gear which, according to teacher Mrs. Brauener is surprisingly heavy, keeps them safe. Metro Police SWAT team member Jessie Freeland (pictured left middle), father of Ella Jean (PK4), brought his armoured police vehicle to Saint Henry. Students learned how Special Weapons and Tactics teams use special training to keep the community safe. Metro Police Officer Doug Atwood (pictured bottom left), father of Parker (6th grade), is a long-time favorite visitor of the Saint Henry preschool program. Officer Atwood brought his police cruiser for students to explore and discussed important safety tips with the Tiger Cubs.

The school relies on a combination of tuition, Annual Giving Drive gifts, and other revenue to cover annual operating costs, need-based tuition assistance, program advancements, investments in technology, facility improvements, and most importantly, the ability to maintain the exceptional faculty. HOME AND SCHOOL NEWS The 2023-2024 school year has brought many new faces to Saint Henry School's Home & School committees. This influx of new volunteers has brought fresh ideas and perspectives when planning events. Parent volunteers are vital to the success of fundraising efforts and the Saint Henry community never fails to impress. Of course, there is room for everyone and it's always a good time to join the fun! The Bonfire and Carnival, along with the Auction, were great successes again. For the first time in the recent history of these events, wonderful weather prevailed. The events have brought in over $130,000 todate. Teacher Treasures and Parent Parties extend through the spring semester and continue to add to the total. This spring, the Walk-at-thon returns as another way to raise funds, but also promote wellness for the Saint Henry Tigers. Other Home & School events include general meetings, Sips with Sister, remaining Teacher Treasures, Parent Parties, and other fellowship events. Editor's Note: In addition to their tireless work coordinating Home & School Association volunteers and overseeing events, Co-Chairs Blake and Tori Emerson recently welcomed their fifth daughter! Congratulations to the Emerson family!
