NEWS FROM SAINT HENRY SCHOOL | SUMMER 2025
SCHOOL CALENDAR

Dear Saint Henry Family, Friends, and Alumni,
Thank you for your continued support of the students and faculty of Saint Henry School! On behalf of the faculty and staff, we are grateful to all who support SHS.
What a wonderful 2024-2025 school year. We witnessed the election of the first American Pope, Leo XIV. The school was electrified by the announcement of Habemus Papam. It is a great and lasting memory! We are proud and blessed to live out our mission at Saint Henry School in weekly mass, daily prayer, the teaching of the dignity of each person and through a strong community atmosphere.
In addition to the academic and athletic programs, Saint Henry Tigers are active and involved! As you will see in this edition, they engage in forensics, drama, LEGO League, music/band, history, math, spelling competitions, as well as service through the Children of Mary program.
In the coming year, Saint Henry School is going through accreditation. It is a perfect opportunity for us to focus on our mission as a Catholic academic community. We are also looking forward to developing an outdoor pavilion that both the parish and school could access. We hope to share more about this project in the near future!
The school theme this year will be hope! Romans 5:5 states, Hope Does Not Disappoint. The Catholic Church across the world will be closing the Jubilee Year of Hope. We look forward to celebrating this as a school community.
Please know that we are grateful for your continued support! Thank you for all that you do for Saint Henry Church and School.
Sincerely in Christ,
Sister John Mary, O.P.
OUR MOTTO Educating for life in Christ
OUR MISSION
Faithful to the teaching of the Catholic Church, Saint Henry School builds the kingdom of God by forming students in faith, academic integrity, and service to others.
Since 1997, Catholic Math League has provided an opportunity for students from 2nd grade through 8th grade Advanced Math to compete against students from hundreds of Catholic schools across the country, building confidence and improving test-taking skills. This year Saint Henry School’s Kayla Wehby (pictured above) earned 1st place on Math 3 Test, 1st place in the Math 3 Division, and 3rd place in the Math 3 Nationals of the Catholic Math League!
“There’s white smoke!” exclaimed 7th/8th grade religion teacher Sister Maria Sophia as she escorted her students to the cafeteria. Her excitement was palpable. Principal Sister John Mary shared the news with the entire school, “Pardon the interruption. Habemus papem! We have a pope!” Cheers errupted from the classrooms. Saint Henry School joined Catholics the world-over with great anticipation on May 8, waiting for the new pope to appear on the balcony. A papal election is memorable, but the election of the first American pope, Robert Francis Cardinal Prevost - Pope Leo XIV - will surely be a life-long Saint Henry memory for students.
The Nashville Catholic Middle School Forensics League provides students with an opportunity to hone their public speaking skills, and the Saint Henry School team shined in a wide range of categories.
The Forensics team entertained with “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” at the Saint Henry Christmas program. They impressed judges at several tournaments with this Readers Theater entry earning 5th at the St. Bernard Tournament and 2nd at the Coaches Choice Tournament.
The Tigers earned the Carolyn Baker Award for most points per entry not once, not twice, but an amazing three times this season at the St. Rose of Lima, St. Joseph, and JPII tournaments! They also placed first overall at the Coaches Choice Tournament held February 22 at Holy Rosary Academy.
Students earned numerous individual awards throughout the season in categories including Audition, Dramatic Interpretation, Duet Improv, Humorous Interpretation, Original Oratory, Pantomime, Poetry, Prose, and Storytelling. Congratulations are in order for these incredible speakers: Annalise Butner, Catherine Dieal, Cece Dooley, Violet Friedl, Mason Johnson, Ben LaLonde, Josh LaLonde, Millie Martini, Annie Rose Massey, Georgia Massey, Leo Millican, Ceci Petty, Ellie Sanford, Maria Valiquette, and Rachel Wehby. Special thanks to Forensics coach Mrs. Joan Dieal for her dedication to the students and program.
It was a great first year! I love serving as pastor of Saint Henry and enjoy witnessing the beautiful combination of faith and learning so evident in our wonderful school environment. It is a joy to celebrate Mass with the school community each week, and I look forward to visiting with our students and attending the special celebrations and events held during the school year.
We began the school year with the blessing of all classrooms. The Faith Rally, the student presentations for All Saints Day, and the very inspiring Passion Play were among the events that were very meaningful to me this year. Also, I was impressed with the great talents of our students in the school production of The Wizard of Oz, and the musical talent that was presented on Grandparents Day. And of course, First Communion and Confirmation were beautiful celebrations.
To offer a faith-filled environment of loving care and excellent academic formation is a gift that has lifelong effects on those who have this opportunity. Assisting our young people in their growth as disciples of Jesus Christ is truly a privilege and blessing. Also, the strong sense of community in our school strengthens and supports participation in the life of our Saint Henry parish.
Saint Henry School is also a ministry of Evangelization and sharing the gift faith with others. The large number of baptisms that we celebrate at school Masses each year, for example, bears testimony to the powerful witness of faith in our school community. To receive these graces in the presence of classmates and school friends is a source of great pride and joy for our school community. These blessings have great effects on the life of our families and enrich our entire parish community,
Saint Henry School is known for excellence, and rightly so. This is a very special and unique opportunity for a strong environment of faith, an outstanding academic program of excellence, and the joy of community. I am truly thankful to serve you as your pastor!

Mrs. Colleen Andrews joins the Saint Henry faculty as a Pre-K4 aide. She is a native of South Bend, Ind. and attended Catholic schools from Kindergarten through college! Mrs. Andrews attended the University of Notre Dame where she majored in Theology and minored in Education Schooling and Society. She also earned a Master of Higher Education Administration from DePaul University. Mrs. Andrews is a familiar face at Saint Henry School both as a substitute teacher for two years and mother to Eloise (rising Kindergartener) and Hazel (rising 3rd grader). In her free time she enjoys playing tennis, traveling, and exploring new cities with her husband, Buck, and their daughters. Mrs. Andrews looks forward to working with the preschool students and staff.
Ms. Rebecca Darke joins the Saint Henry faculty as a 3rd grade teacher. She is a Nashville native and a product of Catholic education. Her favorite memories from grade school include attending Father Ryan football games with her Christ the King classmates and traveling with her three sisters on vacations, visiting extended family. The Darke sisters bleed purple and orange, as they all attended Father Ryan and University of Tennessee. Ms. Darke recently completed a Masters in Education at UTK. In her free time she enjoys hiking, trying new restaurants with friends, baking,
and reading, to name a few hobbies. She is excited to return to Nashville to begin her career at Saint Henry School explaining, “I am so grateful for my Catholic education, so I can’t wait to be a part of that experience for my students as a teacher.”
Ms. Grace Gaccetta joins the Saint Henry staff as a full-time Guidance Counselor. Born in Ohio, Ms. Gaccetta moved to Tennessee in second grade where she and her two sisters attended St. Rose of Lima and later Saint Cecilia Academy. Her favorite memory from grade school was when Pope Francis was elected. A graduate of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Ms. Gaccetta recently completed a Master of Education in School Counseling at Lipscomb. She shares, “What truly excites me about this position (at Saint Henry) is the opportunity to work in a faithcentered environment where the values of empathy, kindness, and personal growth are prioritized. I’m eager to support students through their emotional and academic journeys, helping them develop resilience and confidence.”

Mrs. Thrasher is looking forward to teaching at Saint Henry School explaining, “I am most excited about the amazing opportunities for spiritual growth and being surrounded by loving, caring people.”
Saint Henry School’s FIRST LEGO League (FLL) teams had another outstanding season! The “Gold” team (Patrick Barnett, Mollie Donlon, Grey Daigle, Carrie Gambrel, Brynne Keller, Joseph Bowersox, Ben Isham, and Eleanor Sevier) competed at the Middle Tennessee qualifier held at Head Middle School and earned the 1st place Champion’s Award and 3rd place for Robot Performance. Both teams advanced to the State Championship Tournament held in February at Tennessee Tech University. Students were treated to a tour of the new engineering campus including a visit to the motorsports laboratory where they met with Tech students to learn about their Formula One and Baja racing projects, participated in a hands-on cybersecurity project using Arduino Unos and C++ coding language, and concluded their visit with the Dean of Electrical Engineering to learn how middle school robotics scales into college capstone projects and career opportunities. The next day, at the State LEGO League tournament, judges complimented the TIGERS on their teamwork, thoroughly researched high-impact innovation projects, and perseverance throughout the season. At closing ceremonies, “Black” team was awarded 3rd place Robot Design!

This year Saint Henry School fielded 21 teams consisting of 210 students! Following a very strong pre-season performance, all of the Saint Henry School basketball teams had successful seasons; whether through wins/ losses or personal/team development.
The 7th/8th Girls Varsity and JV teams both played well and improved over the course of the season. During the end-of-theseason DAC tournament, Marin Colley, Ava Woodard-Bryan, and Gabby Perez played exceptionally well, and Annalise Butner (JV division) and Annie Bain (Varsity) were named to the All-Conference teams.
The 7/8 Boys fielded two JV teams with one going undefeated throughout the season and ultimately winning the DAC tournament. During the DAC tournament, Ethan Stroud played a pivotal role and Garth Casey, Jack Knies, Leo Millican, and Court Poff were named to the AllConference JV team. Special thanks to two former Tigers and current Father Ryan High School students, Tyler Greenwalt and Oakley Moore, for sharing their time and talent with Saint Henry School’s JV teams.
Both 7th/8th Boys Varsity teams had stellar seasons. Black team won the Silver Division of the DAC tournament with Alden Broderick and Bo Boswell key players on the boards, snagging many rebounds, and Clay Huddleston and Esteban Crescencio playing incredible defense. Gold team
won the Gold Division with Patrick (PT) Thompson and Patrick Mulloy handling the ball the majority of the time. Luke Knoch, Cruz Neeley, and Luke Ryan were named to the All-Conference team.
Saint Henry’s 5th/6th Boys and Girls teams played in the annual Coach Cat tournament played at Christ the King. Named for longtime coach Dan Catignani, who passed away in 2016, this favorite tournament honors his memory and supports a scholarship in his name. Ann Garrett Armstrong (Girls’ Division) and Henry Thompson, Peyton Mulloy, and Charlie Vaughn (Boys’ Division) were named to the All-Conference teams.
This year Saint Henry fielded four 5th/6th grade volleyball teams. During these first years on the court, athletes grow in skill throughout the season. All teams performed well and the future looks bright for the volleyball program at Saint Henry School!
The 6-8th grade golf team had a great season, finishing in second place. Christian Trailov was named Player of the Year for an unprecedented third consecutive year; what an amazing accomplishment! Liv Emerson was named the Girl Player of the Year. Once again, Saint Henry had the largest golf team in the Diocesan conference with 25 students participating.
Saint Henry School also fielded two flag football teams for 1st/2nd grade and two teams for 3rd/4th grade divisions. All teams gained considerable experience and grew as a team and individually.
Of course, Saint Henry’s Spring season would not be complete without co-ed soccer! Saint Henry proved competitive on the pitch, fielding one 5th/6th grade team and two varsity 7th/8th grade teams. Saint Henry’s Black Varsity tied with Christ the King for first place during the season and Gold Varsity finished the season in second place, defeating Christ the King for the championship trophy in the playoffs. Honored for their superb play during the season, the following students were named All-Conference players: Campbell Conway, Esteban Crescencio, Levi O’Rourke, Luke Ryan, and Vince Shrake.
Saint Henry School extends their gratitude to all of the coaches who selflessly give of their time and talent. The athletic program would not be a success without all your hard work!

In 2022, Tom and Thuy Tracy had a desire for a faith-based education for their children. After touring many different schools in the area, Saint Henry was the best fit for their family. “We felt welcomed from the first moment we walked in the door. It felt like a community,” explained Tom.
Mrs. Thuy Tracy, who joined the Saint Henry faculty in 2023, was raised in a Catholic family. Her great-aunt was a religious sister at St. John’s in Worcester, Mass. Of special note, her family is related to one of the Vietnamese Martyrs, Father Peter Qui Cong Doan! Tom grew up in a home where God was spoken about, but his family did not attend worship on a weekly basis. As an adult, he began attending non-denominational churches around the Bellevue area. Thuy shared, “We began to feel the pull of having Tom and the kids baptized soon after starting school at Saint Henry. We kept this thought in our hearts and prayers, and earlier this school year Talia (2nd grade) came home from school and confidently stated that she wanted to be baptized.” This set the ball in motion.
On Sunday, January 19, Tommy (6th grade), Talia, and Torah (Kindergarten), were baptized with many faculty, staff, family, and friends present. Tommy received his First Communion the following Wednesday at an all-school Mass. Tom, who volunteers as a LEGO League coach at Saint Henry, began attending Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) classes at the church. OCIA, formerly known as RCIA, is a process by which teens and adults seeking some or all of the Sacraments prepare to be received into the Church. At Easter Vigil Mass, Tom, a catechumin, was was baptized, received the Eucharist, and was sealed with the Holy Spirit with his wife and children at his side.
For those families who need to complete sacraments, or for those of other faith traditions who might be thinking about joining the Church, the Tracys offer this advice, “Do it! We truly felt blessed by the wonderful support given from the school and church community. The OCIA team have been so great in staying engaged with us to help welcome us into the parish. This was such an amazing year!”
Interested in learning more about OCIA? Please contact Deacon Mike Catalano at 615-3522259 or by email at mcatalano@sthenry.org.
The 2024-2025 school year was one of both change and continuity for Saint Henry School and the Home & School Association (HSA). HSA efforts would be nothing without the unfailing support of the school administration and dedicated parent volunteers who helped make HSA events so successful.
The return of Sister John Mary to Saint Henry was a delightful boost to HSA efforts. The Tailgate, Carnival & Auction, and the Walk-A-Thon grossed just under $220,000 this year! In addition to supporting the financial needs of Saint Henry School, the fall Tailgate and Carnival & Auction provide a wonderful opportunity for fellowship with both new families and old friends. In the spring, students love their role in the Walk-A-Thon, held during the school day. What an incredible job they did this year!
Co-presidents Blake and Tori Emerson
After four years of leadership, Blake and Tori Emerson are stepping down as co-presidents of HSA; however, they will continue to co-chair Saint Henry’s annual Carnival & Auction. The Saint Henry community is grateful for Blake and Tori’s superb leadership and commitment to the school and HSA. Under the capable leadership of new co-presidents Jessica Gorham and Meredith Schapman, the organization is poised to continue to grow and thrive.
Save the Dates! Tailgate (21+ event) will be held Friday, October 3 and the Carnival & Auction (all ages) will follow on Saturday, October 4. More information, including how to get involved in these and other school events, will be communicated when school resumes in August.
