FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Saint Henry Family, Friends, and Alumni,

I know you join me in celebrating the exciting news that Pope Francis has appointed our Pastor, Father Mark Beckman, as Bishop of Knoxville, TN. How blessed the people in Knoxville are to have such a wise and compassionate priest as their new Shepherd. On the last day of school, after the all-school Mass and awards, the children presented BishopElect Beckman with a compact and beautiful traveling Mass kit, along with carefully crafted handmade cards and notes. Students also presented a white bouquet of roses which they placed at the altar of Mary as a sign of his love and devotion to the Mother of God. The children all prayed a “Hail Mary” asking our Lady to intercede for him and mold him into a bishop in the image of her Son.

We closed the 2023-2024 school year and launched Camp Tiger Town in what seemed a whirlwind! It has been a fantastic year, with record enrollment and academic success. The following pages highlight some events and successes since our last issue of the Pinnacle.

A very sincere “Thank you” to all who actively participate and support our Annual Giving Drive. This year’s Annual Giving Drive ends on June 30th and will bring in just over $280,000 for our wonderful school. We are also pleased to have over 80% participation from our current families in this year’s drive and hope that in this coming year’s Annual Giving Drive we will reach our goal of 100% participation from all our current families.

It is with much gratitude and humility that we announce the new NANCY DEE SCHAAD EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP. The scholarship was established this year with a gift of $500,000 from Mrs. Nancy Schaad. Sadly, Mrs. Schaad recently passed away. As a firm believer in Catholic Education, Mrs. Schaad expressed her wish of financial assistance for the children of Saint Henry Parish. This established scholarship will continue to honor her memory and her great love for the children of Saint Henry Parish.

May our Lord continue to bless you and your family throughout the summer. May this school break be a time of rest and rejuvenation for all.

Sincerely in Christ,

OUR MOTTO Educating for life in Christ

OUR MISSION

Faithful to the teaching of the Catholic Church, Saint Henry School builds the kingdom of God by forming students in faith, academic integrity, and service to others.

SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED TO AOH CONTEST WINNERS

The Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH), Sons of Erin Division, hosts its annual St. Patrick’s Day contest for second and sixth-grade students in the Diocese of Nashville Catholic Schools. Congratulations to this year’s winners, Kayla Wehby and Mason Johnson! Both students received $250 tuition vouchers and an Irish Catholic rosary, presented by Mr. Jim Horton, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to Catholic education. The AOH, founded in 1836 by Irish immigrants in New York City, is the oldest Irish Catholic organization in America, and the Nashville chapter is actively engaged in the Advancement of Catholic Education (ACE).

Don’t miss the fun happenings at Tiger Town! Be sure to follow Saint Henry School on

FAREWELL TO FACULTY

The ending of a school year is always bittersweet, but saying goodbye to faculty and staff is especially difficult.

Mrs. Katie Lopez has served two years as a teacher’s aide in the Saint Henry preschool program. Mrs. Lopez’s familiar face will continue to be seen around Tiger Town next year as a member of the aftercare staff.

Mrs. Amy Sheridan joined St. Henry last year as an aide in our Pre-k 3 program. Her love and patience for the young children will be missed.

Mrs. Melanie Thomas, JD, came to Saint Henry in 2021 to teach 7th and 8th grade literature and serve as a 7th grade homeroom teacher. Mrs. Thomas will return to the practice of law.

Mrs. Michelle Armbruster taught at Saint Henry School for five years including 3rd grade, Kindergarten, and most recently 3-year-old preschool. She looks forward to staying home with her baby son, James, and daughter Celia.

Mrs. Joy Hinson taught 1st grade at Saint Henry School for nine years. Now that her children have graduated from Saint Henry, Mrs. Hinson will serve as a teacher’s aide closer to home at Franklin Road Academy.

Mr. Kasey Wiley is leaving Saint Henry after 10 years. He has served as the Athletic Director, middle school PE and computer/STEM teacher, and most recently as the 7th and 8th grade science teacher. Mr. Wiley is moving back to Indiana to be closer to his family.

Mrs. Margaret Hagey departs St. Henry after 12 years of service. Margaret has been a teacher’s aide and has served as the athletic director for multiple years. Mrs. Hagey will be spending her time at Camp Marymount where she and her husband, Tommy, are directors.

Mrs. Kelly Stewart joined the Saint Henry School staff in 1998. After 25 years of service, she retires to spend more time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Mrs. Stewart will also focus on her cookie business, Cookies for You by KStew.

Ms. Terri Griffith retires after a 43-year career teaching at Saint Henry School! Ms. Griffith’s legacy is vast, which was evident when, at the closing school Mass, Bishopelect Beckman asked Ms. Griffith’s former students to stand. Ms. Griffith plans to spend her retirement relaxing and spending time with her friends and family.

Departing faculty and staff were recognized at closing Mass: Mrs. Lopez, Mr. Wiley, Mrs. Hagey (back row), Mrs. Thomas, Mrs. Hinson, Ms. Griffith, Mrs. Stewart, Mrs. Armbruster, and Mrs. Sheridan.

Congratulations to Spencer Friedl, Avarie Trinidad, Patrick Weed, Garth Casey, and Rankin Casey (pictured above) and Hill Valliquette.

STUDENTS EARN SPOTS AT NATIONAL, INTERNATIONAL HISTORY BEES

The National History Bee results are in and once again, Saint Henry had a remarkable showing! Over 60 students qualified to compete at the Regional tournament in Franklin, Tenn., on Saturday, March 2. The TIGERS competed against 108 teams from across the United States and 38 countries and were one of only two Catholic schools in the field. They were awarded Core Values finalist (top five) and finished 14th overall in the robot design category!

A WARM WELCOME TO SAINT HENRY’S NEW STAFF

The upcoming school year welcomes new members to the Saint Henry School community. These new members bring a wealth of knowledge, experience, and vibrant personalities that will be invaluable to the students and community. Read below to learn a bit about them.

Mr. John Armour joins the Saint Henry faculty as the new 7th and 8th grade science teacher. It’s no surprise he chose to teach at SHS; the Armour family “bleeds black and gold”! His mother, Mrs. Lucy Armour, taught at Saint Henry for nearly 30 years and served as vice principal during that time. A graduate of Saint Henry and Father Ryan, Mr. Armour attended the University of Tennessee (Bachelor’s in History) and Middle Tennessee State University (Master of Business Administration) and is pursuing a Master’s in Education. Mr. Armour has spent the last two years teaching at Lead Prep Southeast Middle School and looks forward to joining his daughter Ruth (7th) and sons Bo (1st) and Max (Pre-K) at Saint Henry every day. He and wife Kelly also share another son, Jack, who is a Saint Henry alumni and junior at Father Ryan. Mr. Armour shared, “Being able to live out and share my Catholic faith on a daily basis is a very exciting opportunity. St Henry is a special place and I am so thankful for the opportunity to come back and follow in the footsteps of all the wonderful teachers who have made this school so amazing.”

Mr. Brandon Ecker joins the Saint Henry faculty as the 6-8 PE and Computer/ STEM teacher and Athletic Director. Hailing from New Orleans, La., Mr. Ecker graduated from Brother Martin High School before heading up north to Endicott College in Beverly, Mass., where he earned degrees in Education and Child and Adolescent Psychology. While at Endicott,

Mr. Ecker played collegiate volleyball and was an all-conference Libero. He looks forward to relocating to Nashville to be closer to his wife Elizabeth’s family (Green Hills) and they bring a new tiger with them, Reed, who will join Saint Henry’s 5th grade class. In his free time, Mr. Ecker solves Rubix cubes, plays video games, and spends time with his family’s two British labs, Walley and Dot. He also competes in CrossFit events, winning the 35-39 World Team Series Championships in 2019! Mr. Ecker shared, “What excites me most about joining the Saint Henry community is its people. They are warm and welcoming, and it reminds me of our beloved school, Christian Brothers, here in New Orleans.”

Ms. Maddie McGrath joins the Saint Henry School faculty as a 1st grade teacher. Ms. McGrath grew up in Wimauma, Florida, about an hour south of Tampa, until the age of 10, when her family moved back to Nashville to be closer to family. She attended St. Ann’s (5th-7th) and Saint Henry (8th). Then, after graduating from Father Ryan High School, she attended the University of Chattanooga, where she earned a degree in Early Childhood and Special Education. Ms. McGrath is excited to begin her teaching career at Saint Henry School explaining, “My father and I both attended Saint Henry. My favorite grade school memory is playing basketball, with my dad as our coach, and winning the regular season and tournament!” Outside of the classroom you will find Ms. McGrath,

MADDIE MCGRATH
JOHN ARMOUR BRANDON ECKER

who is a distant relative of both Princess Diana and Marilyn Monroe, spending time with her family and friends, trying new restaurants, and working out.

Ms. Elizabeth McPeak joins the Saint Henry School faculty as a 4th-grade teacher. She is a long-time member of Saint Henry Parish and attended St. Cecilia Academy. Ms. McPeak is a recent graduate of The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, where she majored in Elementary Education and minored in Psychology. Her favorite prayer and saint are the Serenity Prayer and St. Catherine of Siena. Ms. McPeak fondly remembers teachers from elementary school who supported her creativity and curiosity to be the best learner she could be. She explains, “Having so many wonderful role models originally drew me to the teaching profession. The teachers I have had the privilege of having helped me become who I am today, and I hope to do the same for my future students.” Although she has been to 31 states, two US territories, and 15 countries, Ms. McPeak and her three-yearold Beagle named Woodford are looking forward to moving back to Nashville and enjoying hikes in its natural beauty. One might even hear her playing one of five musical instruments (piano, guitar, flute, clarinet, and trumpet)!

where she majored in English and minored in French. She then earned a Masters in English from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Ms. Mulherin, whose Confirmation saint is St. Catherine of Alexandria, is excited to begin her teaching career at Saint Henry School and exploring new forms of literature with her students!

Ms. Ann Elizabeth Mulherin joins the Saint Henry faculty as the 7th and 8th grade literature teacher. Born on Christmas day, Ms. Mulherin grew up in Mobile, Ala., where she was a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church. One of her favorite grade school memories was when her teacher brought her dogs, Max and Moe, to the last day of school party. She explained, “She had talked about them all year long, and it was the most fun surprise when they walked into our classroom!” Ms. Mulherin attended Sewanee: The University of the South,

Ms. Meghan Nash joins the Saint Henry School faculty as a Kindergarten aide in Mrs. Stricklin’s class. Mrs. Nash is a true “Nashville unicorn” (born and raised)! She attended St. Bernard’s and St. Cecilia Academy where Sr. Mary Elizabeth was her principal. After graduation, Mrs. Nash attended UT-Chattanooga earning a degree in Criminal Justice. She worked as a legal assistant until her oldest daughter, Reagan (a rising senior at Sewanee/University of the South), was born, and a few years later welcomed their second daughter, McCarthy (rising sophomore at Father Ryan). As the girls got older, Mrs. Nash began subbing at their school and thus began her teaching career. When not in the classroom, Mrs. Nash spends her time traveling to dance competitions as a “dance mom,” reading, and spending time with her family. She enjoys the outdoors and loves animals, so it comes as no surprise her favorite saint is St. Francis of Assisi. Mrs. Nash has a deep connection to the Saint Henry community. Her husband, Hugh, is an alumni of the school, they were married and their oldest daughter was baptized in the parish, and her many nieces and nephews attended the school. “Saint Henry is very dear to my heart!”

Mrs. Lee Sevier joins the Saint Henry School faculty as a part-time Kindergarten aide in Ms. Tarwater’s class. Mrs. Sevier grew up in Pennington, New Jersey, where she attended Stuart Country Day School of the Sacred Heart in Princeton. One of her favorite grade school memories was competing in a Science Olympiad event

which required her to build a car powered by a mouse trap. Early in her career, Mrs. Sevier worked as an attorney for a large law firm in New York and New Jersey before starting her family with husband, Jack, a former Saint Henry student. The Seviers have four children: Scott (SHS ’24), Andrew (6th grade), Eleanor (4th grade), and Charlie (Kindergarten). The Sevier family spent several years in Fort Worth, Texas, and Seattle, Washington, before moving back to Nashville last summer. In her free time, Mrs. Sevier enjoys spending time with her family, cooking, hiking, and traveling. In fact, once she and her husband drove from New Jersey through Canada and Alaska all the way to the Arctic Circle where they spent a few months hiking and exploring along the way! Mrs. Sevier looks forward to making a positive impact in the education journey of young people in her new role at Saint Henry School.

Ms. Kayla Springs joins the Saint Henry School faculty as a Pre-K aide. She was born in Chattanooga, but grew up in Nashville. She was baptized at Saint Henry Church as a baby. She attended Tennessee College of Applied Technology (Nashville) where she studied Early Childhood Education. Ms. Springs comes from a large family with two brothers and two sisters, and lots of cousins. “I love to laugh and love a good joke...and a good pen!” In her free time, she enjoys reading, shopping, and traveling, with Boston, Mass., and Paris, France, being among her favorite cities. Ms. Springs has a special devotion to St. Therese the Little Flower and looks forward to sharing the saint’s life and prayers with her students. She adds, “I am so excited to work at Saint Henry! To be able to work at a place I’m very familiar with is great. So many wonderful families go to Saint Henry and they only have the best things to say about the school!”

STUDENTS IMPRESS, ADVANCE AT INVENTION CONVENTION

Each year MTSU hosts the Invention Convention, an event where children in grades fourth, fifth, and sixth from across 41 Midstate schools share their gadgets, games, inventions, and business ideas in a competition of creativity and innovation. This year Saint Henry School students Noah Hale, Maddie Adams, and Elliot Samford earned the Group Championship Award for Entrepreneurship for the “Mood Cap.” Josh LaLonde took first place in the 4th Grade Games category for his “Spider Royale” game. These students will advance to the National Invention Convention to be held in Michigan this summer. Congratulations, Tigers!

FAREWELL TO BISHOP-ELECT JAMES MARK BECKMAN

On May 7, Pope Francis appointed Saint Henry Church and School’s beloved pastor, Reverend James Mark Beckman (pictured on the cover), Bishop of Knoxville.

Father Mark was born on October 19, 1962, in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. He graduated from Saint Ambrose College Seminary in Davenport, Iowa, with a bachelor’s degree in history (1984). He attended The Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium where he earned a master’s degree in religious studies (1984-1989). He was ordained to the priesthood on July 13, 1990, for the Diocese of Nashville.

Prior to his appointment at Saint Henry’s in 2015, Bishop-elect Beckman served at Holy Rosary Parish and Father Ryan High School (Nashville), Our Lady of Lourdes (Springfield), Saint Michael Mission (Cedar Hill), and Saint Matthew (Franklin). He has also held various roles for the Diocese of Nashville.

In recognition of his years of service to Saint Henry School, the students presented Bishop-elect Beckman with a travel Mass kit and “Best Pastor” award at the end-of-theyear awards ceremony. While the Saint Henry’s community is sad to see him go, Bishopelect Beckman will be a great shepherd of the Diocese of Knoxville!

KINDERGARTEN

ALMSGIVING:

Children Supporting Children

As part of their Lenten almsgiving, Saint Henry’s Kindergarten classes researched charitable organizations and narrowed their choices by popular vote. Each selected charity had a common thread: helping children.

Ms. Brennan’s homeroom (KB) chose Save the Children, which works around the world to fight child hunger and keep kids healthy and safe, especially in crisis ridden areas. KB was moved by the pictures and ideas of kids not having enough food or safe places to live or play. Ms. Tarwater’s homeroom raised more than $221.65 for the local chapter of Ronald McDonald House Charities, which keeps families close by providing essential resources and a “home-away-from-home” for families of critically ill children receiving inpatient or outpatient medical care at Nashville area hospitals. Mrs. Vaillancourt’s class selected Sleep In Heavenly Peace, an organization that builds and donates beds, new mattresses, and bedding to children in need. Their motto is, “No kids sleep on the floor in our town.”

Maddie Adams, Noah Hale, and Elliot Samford demonstrate their “Mood Cap”.
Josh LaLonde places 1st in the 4th grade games category.

FIELD TRIPS: HANDS-ON LEARNING

8th grade class trip to Chattanooga
1st grade visits the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum
Lions and tigers and bears, 1st grade visits the Nashville Zoo
6th grade explores God’s creation and has teambuilding fun at Camp Marymount
2nd grade visits the Parthenon in Centennial Park
3rd grade meets Governor Bill Lee (left) at the Capital, who joins the class in singing “Happy Birthday” to Livvie Macedo

SPRING SPORTS UPDATE

Saint Henry School’s athletics program ended the year on a great note with spring athletics. From 5th and 6th grade volleyball to golf to soccer and even the growing flag football program, students played hard, accepted defeat with good character, and graciously celebrated league victories with great sportsmanship and humility.

Spring Volleyball

This year Saint Henry fielded four 5th and 6th grade volleyball teams. During these first years on the court, athletes grow in skill throughout the season. All four teams finished with strong records with several having lost just one or two matches the entire season. The future looks bright for the volleyball program at Saint Henry School!

Golf

The co-ed golf team also had a successful season. For the second season in a row, Christian Trailov won the end of the season tournament and the title of Player of the Year in Division I while Nick Weber finished 3rd in the tournament and received the Most Improved Player Award. As a team, Saint Henry School earned the title of 1st Place Division 1 Champions. Congratulations to Christian, Nick, and the entire golf team on a well-played season!

Flag Football

The Diocesan flag football program for students in 1st-4th grades continues to grow! Saint Henry fielded three teams during the season. Both 1st and 2nd grade teams worked on learning the game and improving basic skills throughout the season. Most notably, the 3rd and 4th grade team made great strides in their ability to work together as a team. The diocese is pleased with how well this program has expanded in its first few years of its existence, and Saint Henry is proud to support that endeavor.

Soccer

Of course, Saint Henry’s Spring season would not be complete without co-ed soccer! Once again, Saint Henry proved competitive on the pitch, fielding two 5th and 6th grade teams and two 7th and 8th grade teams. Special congratulations to the 7th and 8th grade varsity team which finished the season undefeated and won the league Championship!

Graduating Athletes

Saint Henry School extends their gratitude to all the coaches who selflessly give of their time and talent. The athletic program would not be a success without all your hard work. Finally, it is with great pride Saint Henry recognizes the following graduating student athletes who are moving on to high school: Charlie Anton, Annie Baker, Olivia Bauer, Emanuel Carreño, Patrick Colley, Diana Cruz, Austin Disser, Violet Erdman, Audrey Gaughan, Kalyeigh Ann Graham, Josie Hinson, Mia Inman, Isabella Kennard, Luke Klein, Rebecca Levesque, Adaleigh Linthicum, Lisa Lopez, Ella Marchal, Margaret McGrady, Kearney Ann Moore, Charlie Nicholson, Lily Orellana, Eli Samuelson, Ailyn Serrano, Lauren Skelley, Maddox Spence, Audrey Spencer, Evie Strickmaker, Gianna Thien, Ally Thomas, Clara Todd, Patrick Weed, Laila Wilson, and Drew Ziembicki. Remember, “Once a Tiger, Always a Tiger!”

HOME & SCHOOL ASSOCIATION

The efforts of the Saint Henry School Home & School Association (HSA) would be nothing without the dedication and tireless efforts of its parent volunteers and extended school community. This year’s fall and spring events, the Carnival and Walk-A-Thon, were great fundraisers and provided opportunities for the community to gather in fun and fellowship. The 2024 Bonfire (21+ event) is scheduled for Friday, October 4, 2024, with the Carnival to follow the next day on Saturday, October 5. Attractions and interactives have already been booked with many favorites returning and some new surprises will be in store, as well! Mark your calendar and join the Saint Henry community for Tiger Town fun! The Walk-A-Thon will be back in April of 2025 and will no doubt be another success after having been molded into a wonderful event thanks to the leadership of Amy Kelly and Emily Pagel these past two years.

As the 2023-24 academic year ends, the HSA applauds, with gratitude, all involved for this school year’s accomplishments. There are many opportunities to serve, both great and small, and families are encouraged to get plugged in and get involved! There is always work to do and the HSA welcomes new ideas that will benefit the community. The HSA looks forward to another successful year building the Tiger Town community at Saint Henry School.
