NEWS FROM SAINT HENRY SCHOOL | WINTER 2025 ANNUAL REPORT 2023-2024
Dear Saint Henry Parents, Grandparents, Friends, and Alumni,
We are delighted to share with you the winter edition of the Pinnacle and Annual Report of Saint Henry School. We are grateful to all who support our students, faculty, and families.
If you had not heard, we were named “Best Private School” and “Best Preschool” in the Tennessean’s “Best of Music City” Community Choice Awards for the 3rd year in a row! Thank you to all who voted for SHS. It is a testament to the excellent work of our teachers and students to receive this recognition for the third consecutive year!
2025 has been named a Jubilee Year in the Catholic Church. Pope Francis began this year of Jubilee on Christmas Eve by opening the Holy Doors at St. Peter's Basilica. Pope Francis has declared it a Jubilee Year of Hope. In accord with an ancient tradition, the Pope proclaims a Jubilee every 25 years. The Pope is calling on all Christians to pray and renew their hope in the love of Christ Jesus the Redeemer. This is a wonderful opportunity for all of us to pray, renew, and live our knowledge and prayer of the Theological virtues of Faith, Hope, and Love.
As you can see and read in the pages of this Pinnacle, St. Henry School is a strong and vibrant community past and present! It is an honor to return and serve as principal with such a strong community of education and faith.
Included in this issue is our Annual Report for the 2023-2024 fiscal year, which ended June 30, 2024. I want to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU to ALL who support our school personally and financially. It is this support that allows us to give an excellent and enduring education to all the students past and present who walk through our school halls.
Sincerely in Christ,
Sr. John Mary, O.P. Principal
OUR MOTTO Educating for life in Christ.
OUR MISSION
Faithful to the teaching of the Catholic Church, Saint Henry School builds the kingdom of God by forming students in faith, academic integrity, and service to others.
Sr. Maria Sophia, Ms. Emily Leyva, Mrs. Katherine Massey, Ms. Becca Lewis, Sr. John Mary, Mrs. Katie Long, Ms. Maddie Sampson, and Ms. Fallon Nixon proudly represent Saint Henry School
For the third year in a row, Saint Henry School celebrated being named the “Best Private School” and “Best Pre-School” in The Tennessean’s annual “Best of Music City” Community Choice Awards. This designation is widely recognized throughout the metro Nashville community and a distinct honor. Principal Sister John Mary, accompanied by Mrs. Katie Long, Assistant Principal, and Mrs. Katherine Massey, Director of Pre-School, and faculty members represented Saint Henry at the awards gala held at the Music City Center on December 13, 2024.
Congratulations to Saint Henry School's historians!
Thirteen students in grades 5-7 competed at the 2024-25 National History Bee fall regional tournament. Cole Kessor earned an invitation to Nationals (to be held in Orlando, Florida)! The following students earned invitations to Nationals and the International Olympiads (to be held in Paris, France): Jude Adams, Zach Claytor, Ben LaLonde, Josh LaLonde, Mikey LaLonde, and Andrew Sevier! Congratulations to all who competed for an impressive showing!
Livia Castrillo (7th grade) and Catherine Dieal (6th grade), the first and second place winners of Saint Henry's school-wide Spelling Bee, represented Tiger Town at the Diocesan Spelling Bee in January. Congratulations on a job well done, ladies!
Sister John Mary pictured with some of her former students who are now parents of her current students! All were helping to set up for the school carnival! It brought happy tears to her eyes!
By Sister John Mary, O.P.
Earlier this summer, Mother Anna Grace asked me if I would like to return to Saint Henry School to serve as principal. I gave a resounding YES! I had the honor to serve at St. Henry School from 1993 until 2000. It is real joy to return to this awesome Parish and School community!
In 1993, I served at Saint Henry School under Monsignor Michael Johnston. It was an honor and privilege to serve with “Father Mike”. He was a steady presence and supportive voice while the parish community launched a complete renovation of Saint Henry School. The school was built in the 1950’s and it needed repair, upgrade, and expansion. All agreed that it was time to build. There was a great deal of planning, replanning, and fundraising! There were many, many parishioners and school parents involved in thinking about the future of our school. It was an exciting time for SHS and a once in a lifetime project and experience. We learned a lot about educational programs, construction, and storage!
That was over 25 years ago. I am delighted to return to serve with Father Eric Fowlkes at this moment in time. We are both learning the present Saint Henry School together. I am grateful for his kind leadership and pastoral presence. There are presently sixteen faculty/ staff who are alumni serving at Saint Henry School. I have had the joy of speaking with several parents who have been students from the school, graduated, and are active members of the parish and school community. This speaks volumes about our school and parish community. It is a deep joy to encounter and hear from these students and parents. It is a wonderful testimony to the past faculty, staff, sisters, and parents who have served and been part of Saint Henry Church and School community.
Thank you for your gracious welcome this past August. Please keep me and all the faculty, staff, and students of “The Big H” in your prayers. We are happy to be here at this moment in time as we help prepare another generation of the St. Henry community to know, love, and serve our God!
On November 5, 2024, five students received sanctifying grace through the Sacrament of Baptism at Saint Henry School's all-school Mass. Their first sacrament of the Rite of Initiation was made even more special as they were baptized with the prayers and support of their classmates, teachers, religious, and clergy. Congratulations to Jack and Lucas Minnier, Charlie Gatgens, and Hudson and Liam Smith, pictured from left to right with Deacon Mike Catalano.
For many generations, a Catholic education has provided academic excellence, faith formation, immersion in the Pascal Mystery, civic engagement, service to others, and focus on the arts, to name a few. For Saint Henry parishioner Ms. Nancy Schaad, a former educator with a passion for science and reading, the education and formation of future generations was paramount.
Camp Tiger Town offers a variety of morning and afternoon camps for rising 3-year-old preschool through 8th grade students.

In her will, Ms. Schaad bequeathed an endowment of $500,000 to Saint Henry School. This gift has been invested in the ACE fund through the Diocese of Nashville. The proceeds will be used to fund the Nancy Dee Schaad Educational Scholarship to help families that desire a Catholic education receive need-based assistance. The impact of Ms. Schaad's generosity will affect generations of future Tigers.
Daniel Daniel (pictured left), a member Saint Henry School’s Class of 2021, has received a full four-year scholarship (tuition, room and board, and other expenses) to University of Chicago through the QuestBridge National College Match. Daniel, a senior at James Lawson High School, plans to major in business and economics. Congratulations, Daniel!
Grant Lopez and Zach Graffagnino (pictured right), both from SHS's Class of '22, represented Father Ryan High School's Speech and Debate team where they placed 2nd overall in Duo Interpretation out of a field of 21 schools at the tournament held at Dickson County High School. Congratulations, gentlemen!
Harry Penne (SHS Class of 2020), is a member of the University of Notre Dame marching band. Harry has always been a talented sax player; during his 8th grade year at Saint Henry, he was selected for the Mid-State band (pictured above with former band director Mr. Jeff Schletzer). What a year it is to be Irish; Harry, a Glynn Family Honors member double-majoring in neuroscience and theology, has performed with the band at the National College Football Playoff games!
Two students from Saint Henry School’s Class of 2021 have been named National Merit Commended Scholars! Ellie Maxwell (above left) and Emma Wanucha (above right) earned PSAT scores in the top three percent to receive this honor. Ellie is a senior at Father Ryan High School where she is a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Respect Life Club, serves on the Student Ministry Team. She is also a member of the varsity Volleyball team. Emma is a senior at Saint Cecilia Academy where she is a member of the Philosophy Club, Spanish Club, and Mu Alpha Theta. She is a multi-talented artist exploring visual arts and theater at SCA. Emma is a member of the Teen Arts Action Group at the Frist Museum and volunteers with Love on Wheels. Congratulations to Ellie and Emma!
Congratulations to Saint Henry School Class of 2021 alumnae Sarah Beth Sizemore (pictured right with her proud parents, Janie and Christopher) and Ellie Maxwell (see photo above); both have signed to continue their athletic careers in college. Sarah Beth has signed to play soccer at Butler University. Currently a defender and captain of Father Ryan High School's soccer team, Sarah Beth was named to the Tennessean’s 2024 All-Midstate Girls Soccer Second Team and the Tennessee High School Soccer Coaches Association (THSSCA) All-State Team. Ellie has signed to play volleyball at the University of Chicago. Ellie was named to the 2024 1st Team DII-AA All Region Team.
CURRENT TIGER JOINS CAST OF "BEAUTY AND THE BEAST" AT SAINT
Congratulations to Saint Henry 7th grader Leo Millican (above left) for his portrayal of Young Prince in Saint Cecilia Academy's production of Beauty and the Beast. Tiger Town alumnae Hannah Broderick (Belle, above right) and Emma Wanucha (Babette) also starred in the show. Other Saint Henry alumnae involved with the production include Cammie Carlton, Daira Ramirez, and Annabella Sergio. Several of these talented students got their start with the Saint Henry Players. (Don't miss your chance to see the Players' production of The Wizard of Oz; see right for details.)
A TIGER, AWAYS A TIGER!
A tiger streak was spotted at Yankee Stadium when Kate McDonnell (SHS Class of 2019) and Henry Braeuner (SHS Class of 2020) met up to watch their college teams, Notre Dame and Army, compete in the Shamrock Series (above left). When Army and Navy met for their 124th contest, US Naval Academy sophomore Stella Perazzini (SHS Class of 2019) and US Military Academy freshman Henry cheered on their respective teams, setting aside school rivalries to catch up and pose for a photo (above right).
WHERE ARE YOU NOW?
Once a Tiger, always a Tiger! Keep us up-to-date by going to www.sthenryschool.org and select “community” then “alumni” and complete the SHS Alumni Form. Parents of alumni, please feel free to update this form for your son or daughter so we can keep in touch with them!

Saint Henry School's Athletics Department was active during the fall season. From volleyball teams to cross country teams to flag football, the Tigers enjoyed a lot of success on the court and field.
Saint Henry's cheerleading program has a record number of 8th graders on the squad this year. Seventeen girls support the Tigers at basketball games, pep rallies, and other school events. Special thanks to coaches Mary Beth Brocato, Tori Emerson, and Lindsay Sevier for volunteering their time.
Saint Henry's fielded four 7th/8th grade volleyball teams this year: two varsity and two junior varsity.
Both varsity teams competed in the inaugural Middle School Volleyball Playday hosted by The Bellevue Exchange Club Foundation at James Lawson High School. More than 20 teams from throughout the city participated, raising money for the Bellevue community. Marin Colley and Isa Rubadeau were recognized as outstanding student-athletes at the tournament. Both varsity teams played well at the end of the season tournament where the following were named All-League players for their consistent performances all season long: Amanda Baer, Marin Colley, Cami Gorrell, Bella McAuley, and Isa Rubadeau.
The two junior varsity volleyball teams also had great seasons. It was clear how much both teams progressed during the season. Annalise Butner was acknowledged as an All-League player in her division for consistent performances all season long.
Saint Henry set a record with more than 125 students in Kindergarten through 8th grade participating in cross country! During the championship meet at the end of the season, the varsity boys and girls teams ran hard and represented Saint Henry proudly. The boys team also had two individual runners who
placed at the championship meet: Christian Orellana finished 13th, and Mark Hoots finished 15th!
Saint Henry had several other runners perform well in the lower grades as well. They include Mary Catherine Atwood, Bridget Brady, James Grigsby, Mary Addison Hannah, Fiona Meehan, Caitlin Mulloy, Annie Perez, Sebi Sholes, Emma Kate Sullivan, and Lillian Vaughan (K-1st); Eleanor Hannah, Charlotte Schapman, Kayla Wehby, and Louis Williams (2nd/3rd). The SHS cross country program continues to be Saint Henry's most popular sport and 2024-2025 looks to be no different.
This was the third year for the 5th/6th grade co-ed flag football program, and Saint Henry fielded a 7th/8th grade team for the first time this year. Both teams enjoyed their seasons, played tough, had fun, and learned a lot throughout the season. Three players from the 7th/8th grade team were named AllLeague performers: Keaton Erdman, Charlie Kennard, and Vince Shrake.
The basketball season is currently underway with Saint Henry School fielding a record twenty-one teams (comprised of 210 students) this year! The athletes are excited to be playing, gaining valuable experience, and improving on the court. The end of the season will be here soon, and the 7th/8th grade teams will be gearing up for the tournament.
Twelve teams participated in the Overbrook Classic this year. In the 3rd/4th girls division the following athletes were acknowledged for their consistent play and named as AllTournament players: Milly Cognetti, Kellen Ritter, and Olivia Spence. Also recognized for the Honorable Mention team were Charlotte Schapman and Hadley Rider. Henry Thompson was recognized for the 5th/6th boys Honorable Mention team.
The Diocesan Athletic Conference (DAC) hosted its inaugural Leadership Forum at the Catholic Pastoral Center in November. The Leadership Forum was implemented to prepare and inspire Christian athletes to develop and expand their capabilities as leaders. The DAC aims to provide an opportunity where student-athletes can create positive change, motivate others, and bring their community together. Guest speakers included former Super Bowl Champion Tyler Gaffney (New England Patriots), Jack Lutzeier from the NBA, and a panel of current high school athletes from St. Cecilia and Father Ryan. Included in the high school panel were former Tigers Lucy Trailov ('21) and Sarah Beth Sizemore ('21). Representing Saint Henry at the Leadership Forum were Ruth Armour, Parker Atwood, Marin Colley, Campbell Conway, Mark Hoots, Luke Knoch, Daniel McRae, and Isa Rubadeau (pictured above).
In 1918, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, an armistice was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in "the Great War." Armistice Day was celebrated each year following, becoming a holiday in the United States in 1938. Following World War II and the Korean War, the day became known as Veteran's Day and serves as an opportunity to honor all veterans who served in the military, in wartime or peacetime.
Lieutenant Colonel Bryan Rucknagel (Ret.) (pictured left top), father of Emily (2nd grade) and Catherine (4th grade), and his wife, Amanda, visited Mrs. Braeuner's second grade class. Lt. Col. Rucknagel served in the US Army for more than 20 years. He brought uniforms, helmets, patches, and even MREs and explained day-to-day duties. He spoke about his deployments, moving from place to place. Mrs. Rucknagel spoke about the sacrifices military families make so their loved ones can serve their country.
Middle school students enjoyed a visit from Command Sergeant Major Tonya Oxendine (Ret.) (pictured left bottom), a spokesperson for the Wounded Warrior Project. CSM Oxendine served in the US Army for 30 years, including two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan as a paratrooper, earning the highest rank an enlisted soldier can achieve. She spoke about the importance of showing appreciation for veterans. She led the students through fun exercises that illustrated the importance of the Army's values of teamwork, picking each other up, and perseverance.
Saint Henry School and its students offer their sincere gratitude to Lt. Col. Rucknagel, CSM Oxendine, and all members, past and present, of the United States Armed Forces for their sacrifice and service.

The Saint Henry School Home & School Association was delighted to kick off the year by welcoming new and returning families to the Tiger Town community. This year was made extra special for SHS alums who were able to reconnect with their beloved former principal/Saint Henry's new principal, Sister John Mary.
The newly minted Tiger Town Tailgate, along with the Carnival and Auction were held on a very warm October weekend! The turnout was amazing and the sense of community was alive and well! The HSA is grateful for the opportunity to host these events each year, as they support the spirit of fellowship at Tiger Town.
The HSA continues to provide special meals and treats for Saint Henry's faculty and staff, which are much appreciated. Quarterly meetings are back on the calendar with two remaining. The HSA is always open to new ideas and encourages school families to attend the remaining meetings, which will be posted in the Tiger Connection.
In the spring of 2025, the Walk-A-Thon will return as another way to raise funds in support of the needs of Saint Henry School. Remaining Teacher Treasures and Parent Parties will continue throughout the spring.
All are invited to get involved with the HSA; there is room for everyone and it's always a good time supporting the Tigers!
Don’t miss the fun happenings at Tiger Town! Be sure to follow Saint Henry School on
