NEWS FROM SAINT HENRY SCHOOL | SUMMER 2023

SCHOOL CALENDAR 2023-2024

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Saint Henry Family, Friends, and Alumni,

The awe-inspiring cover of this Pinnacle issue is a catechetical reminder that we have a God who is immensely in love personally with each one of us. As scripture tells us, “for this is how God loved the world: He gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him may not perish but may have eternal life” (John 3:16). The Catholic Church throughout the world has been preparing the faithful for a deepening in our love for Jesus in the Eucharist through a Eucharistic Revival.

Sponsored by the United State Bishops, the Eucharistic Revival is a three-year initiative that aims to inspire, educate, and unite. In a world where not many people know Jesus intimately, the revival is meant to show everyone what wonders the True Presence of Jesus can do to heal the soul. Through a carefully planned timeline of events, after three years, the U.S. bishops hope to change the lives of many Catholics and non-Catholics alike.

Students at Saint Henry School will continue to prepare throughout this final year with an ardent desire to know Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament, the Eucharist.

May Jesus bless us in abundance as we journey together as a school community. Wherever we are in our understanding of the faith, may we all increase in our love and understanding that Jesus loves us and desires our love in return.

Thank you for your continued goodness to Saint Henry School. We will open with a record high enrollment this 2023-24 school year. May we continue to teach the truths of the faith to the children who will one day be our leaders in the world.

Sincerely in Christ,

SAINT HENRY SCHOOL PRESENTS WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY

FAREWELL TO FACULTY

The ending of a school year is always bittersweet, but saying goodbye to faculty and staff is especially difficult.

Ms. Gina Coode is leaving Saint Henry after teaching for 15 years. Her love of children and the pride she has for the SHS Tigers is sure to be missed. Ms. Coode has taught 4th grade, 6th grade, and PE at Saint Henry School. The Saint Henry School community is grateful for her commitment to the children whose lives she has touched.

Ms. Anne Michelle Millican will depart Saint Henry School after 10 years of service. Ms. Millican taught Kindergarten and then transitioned into a role in our Support Services department. She has helped so many children over her years at Saint Henry School. She will be moving on as the Admissions Director at Saint Cecilia Academy.

Mrs. Tracy Aszkler served Saint Henry School’s Pre-K program for eight years. Over the past two years, she also held the role of Preschool Director. Mrs. Aszkler showed the Saint Henry School “Tiger Cubs” so much love and compassion and helped build the program to be a robust preschool program. She will be returning to the classroom at Trinity Montessori.

Mrs. Emily Carr (not pictured above) is leaving Saint Henry School after four and a half years. She began at Saint Henry in 2018 teaching 7th grade English and Literature and then 7th and 8th grade English. Emily has two precious daughters, Palmer and Annie Hayes, and she will be spending time at home with them.

Mrs. Megan Frost is leaving Saint Henry School after almost four years. She came to

Coached by Ms. Terri Griffith, these students qualified and competed at the 2023 Middle and Elementary School National Championships of the National History Bee the first week of June in Arlington, Virginia as part of the International Academic Competitions Middle/Elementary School National Championships.

Kindergarten. Ms. Kitchens made many friends at Saint Henry School and her sweet smile will surely be missed. She plans to return to her hometown of Birmingham, Alabama to be with her family.

Mrs. Holly Gaughan departs Saint Henry School after three years. Holly began helping in the younger children’s program and then transitioned to a part-time receptionist. Holly has greeted so many Saint Henry School families in a warm and friendly way. She plans

to spend her time with her family and visiting her son in college.

Mrs. Kathy Jarrell leaves Saint Henry School after two years where she served as an aide in the Pre-K3 program. So many of these “Tiger Cubs” have been greeted by Mrs. Jarrell as they arrive in the mornings. She has a true love for the sweet 3-year-olds. Mrs. Jarrell will still be around as needed next year to sub in the Pre-K program.

FIRST LEGO LEAGUE “Geared” for Innovation

Saint Henry School’s FIRST LEGO League (FLL) program is thriving! This year students explored where energy comes from and how it is distributed, stored, and used as part of the 2022-23 “Superpowered” theme. The TIGERS (Thoughtful, Innovative, Grateful, Engineers, Researchers, and Students) “Black” and “Gold” teams built and programmed competitive autonomous robots using the Lego Spike Prime kit, engaged in research projects to identify problems and create and prototype innovative solutions, and learned how to work together as a team and mentor peers.

Both teams competed at the “Music City” Regional Tournament in December. The “Black” team took home 1st place for Robot Performance and 1st place for their Innovation Project. The “Gold” team placed 2nd overall for Robot Performance and earned 2nd place for Core Values. Both teams were among the 46 teams selected to advance to the State Championship Tournament in February at Tennessee Tech University. “Gold,” a second-year team, finished 5th overall in robot performance. “Black” team won 2nd place Champions for excellence in core values, robot design and performance, and innovation project.

The season, which began mid-August, did not end there! “Black” team was invited to attend the FLL Razorback Invitational at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville in late May. They were among 80 of the top teams from 38 states and six international countries to participate in a once-in-a-lifetime, three-day tournament. The TIGERS were shortlisted for their pit display with their alliance team, The Hexadic Infinity Block Stackers from Beaverton, Oregon. The alliance partners also advanced to the “Sweet Sixteen” round of the alliance robot contest. The TIGERS were among the 30 teams to receive a callback to re-present their innovation project and were awarded one of five “Innovation Project Finalist” awards at closing ceremonies (pictured right).

A WARM WELCOME TO SAINT HENRY’S NEW STAFF

The upcoming school year welcomes new members to the Saint Henry School community. These new members bring a wealth of knowledge, experience, and vibrant personalities that will be invaluable to the students and community. Read below to learn a bit about them.

Ms. Emily Leyva joins the Saint Henry School faculty as the 7th and 8th grade English Teacher. Ms. Leyva comes to Tiger Town from the state of California, where she received her Bachelor’s in Elementary Education from California State University in Bakersfield. Ms. Leyva’s parents both work in law enforcement and she has three brothers, one that is older and two that are younger. She loves reading, exploring new coffee shops, attending concerts, and happens to be a big country music fan, so Nashville is a wonderful place for her to call home! Ms. Leyva used to ride horses when she was younger and hopes to get back to that soon. Another fun fact about Ms. Leyva is that she has seen every movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Mr. Max Dvorin will be the 5th through 8th grade Band Instructor. Mr. Dvorin is from West Hartford, Connecticut, and came to Nashville in 2014 to attend Belmont University, where he received his degree in Commercial Music with an emphasis on saxophone. Mr. Dvorin is the first and only student to begin and receive a Master’s degree from Belmont in Multiple Woodwinds with an emphasis on flute. While he may have honed many music skills at Belmont, music is in his genes. His father is a musician and his mother a music teacher; they were both his first teachers in music and in life! Mr. Dvorin enjoys playing golf and is a big baseball fan. He played baseball much of his life and has been a Nashville

Sounds season ticket holder for many a season. Mr. Dvorin has taught music since he was in high school. He kept many of his students virtually when he left his hometown to come to Belmont and even taught music to Belmont undergraduates as he pursued his Master’s degree. Some of Saint Henry’s talented musicians learned from Mr. Dvorin, Harry Penne (SHS ’20), George Penne (rising 7th grader), and Grace Bauer (SHS ’22). Teaching has always been a big part of his life and he is looking forward to teaching Saint Henry School students, giving them a great foundation and good techniques from the start. Mr. Dvorin has two cats, Bella and Jazz. Jazz is the perfect name for a musician’s pet, and one would think Mr. Dvorin named his cat, but Jazz had his musical name before Mr. Dvorin adopted him. Some things are just meant to be!

Ms. Nancy Hughes will be a 4th grade teacher at Saint Henry School this fall. She is a Nashville native who attended Christ the King and graduated from Father Ryan High School in 2008. She attended Ole Miss, where she received her Bachelor’s degree. She then received her Master’s in Elementary Education from Middle Tennessee State University. She and her husband, Logan, have a 1-year-old daughter named Elizabeth. She enjoys long walks with her German Shepherd, Rue, and time at the pool. She also enjoys trying out new restaurants and would say Italian cuisine is her favorite. Ms. Hughes previously

taught 2nd and 1st grade at Cedar Grove Elementary in Smyrna, TN. She is very much looking forward to being in the 4th grade classroom, teaching students older than she has in the past, as well as the more rigorous 4th grade curriculum. Her friends would say she is funny, easy-going, and quite easy to get along with. A fun fact about Mrs. Hughes is that she has slept in all 50 states!

Ms. Leslie Robertson will be the aide in Mrs. Zemba’s PreK4 classroom. Ms. Robertson graduated from Saint Henry School in 1978, went on to Father Ryan High School, earned her bachelor’s degree from Florida State University, her Master of Education from Belmont University, and also has 75 hours in Continuing Education in Theology and Youth Ministry from The Institute for Church Life of the University of Notre Dame. For 13 years she was the Director of Youth Ministry at Saint Matthew Church in Franklin. Her most recent positions have been in the kindergarten classroom both at The Covenant School for four years and at Grassland Elementary the past two years. Ms. Robertson has three children and her sweet dog, Mae. Her children are Maggie, Liam, and Emma. Maggie and Liam are twins and are 23 years old. Emma is 21 years old and currently attending the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. In her free time, Ms. Robertson likes to try new recipes, and most Saturdays you can find her exploring the Franklin Farmers Market. She stated many reasons she is excited to come back to Tiger Town, but topping her list is being part of the Catholic community, working with and supporting the wonderful team of teachers, getting to know each student, and helping them recognize their gifts.

Ms. Rose Tarwater will be a Kindergarten teacher. She is a graduate

of St. Matthew School. She attended high School at St. Cecilia Academy, where she was named their 2018 St. Cecilia Girl, the school’s top honor for a graduating senior. Ms. Tarwater attended Samford University, where she majored in General Education and Special Education. She comes to us after teaching 3rd grade in Pensacola, Florida, and is very much looking forward to being home again and close to her parents, brother, sister, and dog (Pekka), who all reside in the area. In her free time, she enjoys reading, quilting, and spending time with her family. Ms. Tarwater and her family have a fun tradition at Christmas of watching the movie Elf while they all wear matching Elf t-shirts. They get new ones every year!

Mrs. Bridget Thomas will be a parttime receptionist, job-sharing the position with Mrs. Kelly Stewart. Mrs. Thomas graduated from Saint Henry School in 2001, went on to St. Cecilia Academy, then graduated from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She is no stranger to working in Catholic schools as well. Mrs. Thomas was the Advancement Services Coordinator at Father Ryan High School for three years, then worked at Saint Cecilia Academy overseeing alumnae relations. She has been busy in recent years with her three daughters, 5-year-old Lucy who will be in kindergarten this fall, and her twin girls (Molly and JoJo) who are starting in PreK3. She also has a side-gig, “Little Nite Owls,” where she sets up fun sleepover parties for her customers with tents, linens, and all the bells and whistles! While her moments of free time may be rare, Mrs. Thomas also enjoys crafting and hiking. Her mother, Nancy Nolan, taught at Saint Henry for 27 years. Mrs. Thomas is very much looking forward to coming back to her alma materonce a tiger, always a tiger!

Mrs. Thuy (pronounced “Twee”) Tracy will be a teaching aide starting this fall. Mrs. Tracy moved to Nashville from Auburn, Massachusetts, in 2011 when her husband accepted a position in Development at Vanderbilt University. Mrs. Tracy majored in Elementary Education at Clark University and earned her Master of Education from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Mrs. Tracy was in pursuit of certification as a behavior analyst when she decided to pause to focus on her growing family. Mrs. Tracy has three children, Tommy (5th grade), Talia (1st grade), and Torah (PreK4), and is in the process of finalizing the adoption of a three-year-old American Eskimo dog. Mrs. Tracy enjoys reading and baking, her specialty being delicious 100% allergenfree treats. Standing at 5’3”, it may surprise some to know that Mrs. Tracy was an Army Reservist for eight years. She served throughout her four years of undergrad and beyond. During that time, she worked for the Army on weekends and traveled about three weeks of each year to fulfill her duties as a reservist. Mrs. Tracy says, “Laughter is the best thing in life!” Her nickname while in the Army Reserve was Sergeant Giggles.

SHS GRADUATES: WHERE ARE YOU NOW?

Once a Tiger, always a Tiger! Keep us up-to-date by going to www.sthenryschool.org and select “community” then “alumni” and complete the SHS Alumni Form. Parents of alumni, please feel free to update this form for your son or daughter so we can keep in touch with them!

MAKING A MOVE FROM WITHIN

Two staff members will be leaving their current positions, but fortunately for Saint Henry School, they leave their current post only to take on new roles at Tiger Town.

Mr. Louis Keller joined the team this past fall and served as an aide in Mrs. Vaillancourt’s Kindergarten classroom while studying for his Master’s in Teaching from Trevecca Nazarene. Mr. Keller earned his Bachelor’s in Education from MTSU and will complete his master's this December. He has a gift for teaching, and it is exciting to announce that Mr. Keller will be a 4th grade teacher starting this fall.

Mrs. Cindy Gaughan started part-time in Support Services (then called “Resource”) to fill in for a teacher on maternity leave. The following August of 2001, she was offered the full-time position as a 4th grade teacher. She accepted while continuing toward completion of her Master’s of Education degree. Teaching is Mrs. Gaughan’s 2nd career. She has a Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Technology. After teaching 4th graders for 23 years, it is an understatement to say she is a Master in this age group! If you were to ask Mrs. Gaughan about her new position as a Learning Specialist in Student Support Services at Saint Henry School, she would tell you, “I am finally graduating 4th grade! I got my endorsement last summer and now I am going to my dream job of supporting kids who struggle. I cannot wait.”

KINDERGARTEN ALMSGIVING “Money Mondays”

In kindergarten at Saint Henry School, “Money Mondays” are a favorite part of the week. Each Monday kindergarteners learn about coins, their value, and how to count them. They practice counting by ones, fives, tens, and even twenty-fives. They even talk about what they can buy with a penny, nickel, dime, and quarter. On their hundredth day of school, they talk about what they can buy for $100. Learning about the value of money is important, but learning about how they can make a difference with their money is an integral part of the curriculum in kindergarten and in all grades at Saint Henry School.

This year for Lent, kindergarten again continued with their tradition of collecting and counting coins as an act of almsgiving. As the pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters came in, they all grew increasingly excited. The coins came from piggy banks and tooth fairies, were earned from extra chores, and were lucky pennies students found on the ground. Each kindergarten homeroom decided to which charity they would donate their collection. This year Mrs. Vaillancourt’s class donated their funds to Make-A-Wish of Middle Tennessee, Ms. Kitchens’ homeroom donated to the St. Vincent De Paul Society, and Ms. Brennan’s class donated their collection to the Nashville Humane Society.

SPRING SPORTS UPDATE

Saint Henry School had a remarkably busy year in sports and ended it on a good note with their spring athletics. The 5th and 6th grade volleyball teams had an exciting season, the 6th-8th golf team swung the clubs well, the flag football program grew for 1st-4th graders, and the soccer teams played hard during the season, with the 7th and 8th grade varsity team winning the league and tournament championship! Preparations are already underway for the fall sports season and the teams cannot wait to get going next school year.

Spring Volleyball

There were four 5th and 6th grade volleyball teams this year, and the teams’ skill grew a great deal during the season. All teams finished the season with great records, with several of them having only lost one or two matches the entire season. The future looks bright for the volleyball program at Saint Henry School!

Golf

The golf team also had a successful season. Christian Trailov won the end-of-the-season tournament and the title of Player of the Year for Division I. Cade Saivar finished 2nd and Nicholas Weber finished 3rd in the tournament. Brayden Thacker was awarded “Most Improved Player” award for Division I.

In Division II, Reece Pritchett won the end-of-the-season tournament and Rankin Casey and Spencer Friedl tied for 3rd. Saint Henry School is proud of all their accomplishments!

Flag Football

The flag football season for 1st-4th grade was a major success. Saint Henry School had four teams during the season. There was one 3rd-4th grade team, and all enjoyed watching their teamwork and skill grow during the season. The three 1st-2nd grade teams had great seasons, as well. The Diocese of Nashville is hopeful that this program will expand even more during the upcoming school year.

Soccer

The spring season concluded with soccer, and the Tigers had a strong showing again this year. Saint Henry School had two 5th-6th grade teams and two 7th-8th grade teams. The 5th-6th grade teams had a fantastic year and grew in skill and teamwork during the season. The 7th8th grade teams both competed in the varsity division this year. The JV team was competitive all year and improved each week. The varsity team finished the season undefeated and won the league championship. They backed up that performance with a victory in the end

of the season tournament to win the championship for the tournament.

The spring sports season was a tremendous success, and all the Tigers had a great showing this season. Preparations are already underway for the fall season. Saint Henry School would like to thank all the coaches and athletes from all the teams this year. The athletics program would not be a success without all their hard work and dedication. Lastly, congratulations to the 8th graders who are moving on to high school. Their leadership and dedication on the field will be missed, but the memories will last forever. Remember, “Once a Tiger, always a Tiger!”

HOME & SCHOOL ASSOCIATION

The 2022-2023 school year marked another year of growth for both Saint Henry School and the Home & School Association. Thanks to Saint Henry’s dedicated parents, volunteers, and sponsors, fundraising efforts netted just over $200,000 with the largest portion resulting from the return of the Carnival in the fall. The Walk-A-Thon (pictured above) returned this spring after a three-year hiatus and was met with great enthusiasm from the school community. It was a wonderful day thanks to many helping hands, but especially co-chairs Amy Kelly and Emily Pagel, who led the charge. Saint Henry School students love their role in this fundraiser, and what an incredible job they did! There is a tremendous amount of gratitude to everyone that helped make the Carnival, Walk-A-Thon, and other HSA events throughout the year so successful.

The Home and School Association is challenging the Saint Henry School community to exceed this year’s fundraising revenue and increase parent involvement in all plans for the 2023-2024 school year. Head room parents have been assigned and will be ready to hit the ground running at the beginning of the school year. New committees have recently been added to the organization’s fabric to allow for more parent involvement. Plans are underway for the 2023 Carnival this fall and parents should keep an eye out in July for communication on the Bonfire (21+ event) and Carnival (all ages) and how to get involved in these and other school events. Attractions and interactives have already been booked for the Carnival with many favorites are returning, and some new surprises are in store, as well! Save the date for the Bonfire on Friday, November 3, 2023, and the Carnival on Saturday, November 4, 2023.

The Catholic Church teaches all are called to serve others through Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. Following this guidance, service is a key part of the curriculum for all students at Saint Henry School.

On May 18, 2023, NBC Nightly News Kids Edition with Lester Holt featured Ms. Lewis’s 4th Grade class in its “Inspiring Kids” segment. This year, Ms. Lewis’s students chose to support Ronald McDonald House Charities of Nashville, which provides essential resources and a “home-away-from-home” for families with children receiving both in-patient and out-patient care at Nashville area hospitals. Several Saint Henry families have been served by Ronald McDonald House, making this endeavor especially meaningful.

Students sent in small items including small toys and toiletries, then gathered in the Fellowship Hall to assemble more than 70 goodie bags for Ronald McDonald House families. They also initiated a school-wide collection of aluminum pull tabs from containers (soda, soup, pet food, etc.), which were then processed by a local recycler in exchange for cash used to provide additional resources.
