Dear Readers, Happy New Year to all of you! May your 2015 be filled with good health, happiness, love and prosperity. After those big four categories are covered, let’s think about what we hope to accomplish this year. To set us up for success instead of failure, let’s not refer to this as “New Year’s Resolutions” (they don’t work for me either), but more of a Bucket List challenge. What is on your Bucket List for 2015? Take a few minutes or a few days and write your 2015 Bucket List down on paper with a big box next to each thing on your list so you can check it off when it has been completed. Post the list on your bathroom mirror or your refrigerator where you can see it each and every day. Before you know it, you’ll be doing it! Ok, I’ll kick start this Bucket List Challenge and each quarter I will report back as to what I have done from my list and I will post photos of me doing it: Sky Dive, Learn How to Sew, Become Proficient at Driving Boats, Run in a Charitable 5K, Secure a National Account for all seven of our Sports & Activities Directories. See how easy that is? Now write your list. Once you have accomplished something on the list...email me what you did and attach a photo of you doing it so that we can publish it in our next issue! What’s new at Sports & Activities Directory? We have just celebrated a year of having our App for Smartphones! We worked out the bugs (yep, we had our share!), listened to our App users and clients to make things easier and better and have already amassed over a thousand users since we relaunched the new and improved app in late July. We also added our newest area’s information from the Bradenton/Sarasota area! The App provides easy access to websites and phone numbers as well as location mapping, advertiser information and special offers. What has been receiving the most acclaim so far is the photo gallery and the event listings. As we are always updating and trying to further improve, we have also activated all of the websites and phone numbers for our not-for-profit sports leagues and city programs. Once in our App, tab Broward County and then tap the S & A Directory to see all of the categories of directories we offer (sports, health, restaurants, academic, activities, parks, etc..) from all over Broward County. Feel free to send us an email from the app with comments or suggestions. Enjoy this wonderful South Florida weather! Flip through our Events section in this publication or on our App to find fun things the entire family can do together. Get off the bench and get out and play! Our best to you, Margot & Nicole

he sun has definitely come out for one of south Florida’s own! That’s right, 9 year old Issie Swickle, of Davie, has been tapped to play the lead roll of Annie in the National Broadway Tour of the TONY award-winning musical Annie! In June, Issie traveled to Pearl Studios in New York City and competed against hundreds of would be Annie’s to nail down the top spot. Issie has been studying at Broadway Kids Studio since she was 5 years old. Issie’s mother, Dana Swickle, actually found the studio by accident. She got lost in the plaza, then ended up having Issie’s 5th birthday party there. The past 4 years she has taken hours of dance, piano, acting, and voice lessons and participated in many rehearsals and local shows. All to, hopefully, one day, hit it big on Broadway. Michelle Ameerally, owner of Broadway Kids Studio in Davie where Issie trains says, “Issie is simply amazing. This is not work for her. She loves everything about performing.” One of Issie’s good friends and fellow Broadway Kids Studio student Maisy Surman, 11, says she “talks to Issie on the phone a lot. We talk about normal things. I was so excited for Issie when she got the roll. I was sad because she was leaving, but so happy because she worked hard for this.” Shea Korman, 8, “I came to Broadway Kids Studio to take lessons after I saw Issie in the Sound of Music.” Emily Alderman - 15, Nya Owusu-Afriyie - 9, and Abby Canalejo - 10, have worked with Issie while at the studio and they all say, “Issie is a sweet, fun, and humble girl. She’s sassy, happy and we are all so happy for her.” How did a girl from Davie end up in New York City? Well, during the summer of 2013 Issie went to NYC and attended a workshop called Broadway Artists Alliance. This workshop is attended by agents seeking talent. This is where Issie met her Agent Nancy Carson of Carson Adler Agency. On June 8th 2014, Issie and her family flew to NYC for the first round of auditions for Annie. June 14th she was called back with a group of 6 girls and eventually told she was selected for the lead role of Annie. Her mother, Dana,

said “We could not believe she got the lead role. We were stunned and just didn’t know what to do or how to react.” When asked how Issie felt about landing the role, Dana said, “She’s nine. She was really happy, but I don’t think she understands the enormity of the situation. This tour is a pure blessing.” Issie and Dana have relocated to New York City while rehearsals are going on. Moving wasn’t an issue for Issie. She is so even keeled, she just goes with the flow. She understands what’s expected of her and she delivers. Rehearsals are six days a week and she gets up at six a.m. She attends tutoring from 9 to noon and then rehearses all afternoon. At about six p.m. she has another hour of schooling. We all know that Annie has short red hair, so what happened to Issie’s beautiful, long brown locks? They had to be cut for the roll and her hair was dyed red! Her hair will be donated to Locks of Love. “Issie loved to play with her hair. She was always playing with it. She would watch videos and learn different hair styles and try them out on herself. She knew if she got the role of Annie, she’d have to cut her hair. Once it was cut and dyed it was a little shocking to her. But now, she’s used to it and she’s able to style it in different ways,” her mother says. Issie says, “It’s like what Shailene Woodley had to do. Her character in Divergent had long hair. She had to cut it off for her character in The Fault in Our Stars. It will grow back!” When asked if she had any advice for other kids who dream of performing Issie said, “Hard work pays off. Keep trying and believe in yourself.” Although this tour of Annie is scheduled for 3 years, Issie has signed on for one year. After that, everything will be re-evaluated and decisions made as to whether or not she will continue with the show or if the role will be recast. Broadway Kids Studio is located at 9042 West State Road 84 Davie, Florida 33324, 954-693-7500.

Dear Residents,

12

Welcome to 2015 and what is hoped will be a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year for each of you. The holidays are always a joyous, albeit hectic, time of year and January brings a refreshed focus on the future ahead. With the wonderful winter weather that many of us moved to south Florida for, brings a host of city events and programs that we encourage you and your family to enjoy. The incredibly popular monthly Moonlight Movies in the Park series continues through April. Bring some lawn chairs, a blanket and pack a snack or get one in the park, because the movie is on us! This is a great night out for kids, teens and parents alike, and the best part – it’s one of many free events that the Parks & Recreation Department provides for residents the year round. We have free performing arts for children at the Weston Community Center including puppet shows and magic shows. Also, Celebrate the Arts in Weston Town Center on January 25th from 12-5pm, which includes hands-on participation in the visual arts, performances, dancing and literary art. This is one of many cultural events which spotlight the great work of the Arts Council of Greater Weston, in partnership with the City, whose members volunteer their time to bring arts programming to residents. The 2015 Weston Winter Safety Expo will be held on Friday, January 23rd from 6-8:30pm. Once again a strange phenomenon takes place within the confines of Weston’s Tequesta Trace Park: It snows! And it snows to some great music and entertainment as well. On this night, the Broward Sheriff’s Office brings out “all the big toys”. On display are police, fire and rescue vehicles of all kinds, helicopters and much more. There are kids’ activities, a winter wonderland photo area, informational booths and displays and of course, what would a chilly night in Weston be without hot chocolate and cookies. Once again, a free community event that is open to everyone. For those with a sophisticated palette, on March 8th from 6-7:30pm, the City of Weston, Weston Town Center and the Weston Philharmonic Society present a free outdoor pops concert performed by the full Symphony of the Americas orchestra. Dates, times and details of these and other free outdoor community concerts, professional theater for children, the Foreign Film Series, and more can all be found on our city website Events Calendar at www.westonfl.org. Lastly, I would like to take note of the upcoming Presidents’ Day holiday on February 16, 2015. The February birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln are celebrated. It is also a day to reflect on the history of our great nation. In comparison, Weston’s current 18 years of incorporated history seems insignificant in terms of length; but it is incredibly significant in terms of growth and success in our limited historical timeframe.

Your Mayor,

Daniel J. Stermer Mayor of Weston

You may remember Keith Sims as a Dolphin football player. He played

in the NFL for 11 years. He made the Pro Bowl team in 1993, 94, and 95. He was aggressive on the field for years, and is now aggressive with saving money. He also loves to coupon. What is couponing? It’s a hobby, an art, and it’s fun for many who check around all week for the best coupons they can find on products for their family. Sims considers himself a good, solid couponer, who really looks for items his family needs. “With a total of 5 kids, we could spend a lot each month at the grocery store, but I always enjoy

getting a good deal,” Sims said. He began seeing the benefit of clipping coupons when he saw his wife looking through the Sunday papers. “She used to have a folder with all of her coupons in it each week, and then it became a game between us to see which one of us could save the most money,” Sims added. Keith knows it takes some time each week to search for coupons. He has had up to 100 apps on his phone to check for the best deals. Now, there is one app called Couwalla that can house all your coupons and your loyalty cards on it, to make couponing easier. “This is one-stop shopping for me now,” Sims said. “I’m a technology geek and with the Couwalla app organizing all my coupons, I won’t need to print them out, or keep the loyalty cards for all the stores on my key chain. I also won’t have to keep checking all the other apps anymore.” You can download the app by sending a text to 30241 and type the word ‘Couwalla’ to receive the download link, OR search for ‘Couwalla’ in the iTunes Store. Sims recommends for everyone to start out using at least one coupon per store. Even by spending just a little time, you can begin saving. Sims said, “Give it a try, download Couwalla, and maybe you will be hooked like I am!”

orn in the Dominican Republic, Kerry Kneissel was only 14 months old when she was adopted by an American couple. Twenty-seven years later, she reunited with her biological parents for the first time. After seeing the conditions in her native village of Bani, she co-founded Giving the Unexpected, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of the people living there. Kerry lives in Weston, where she teaches third grade at Eagle Point Elementary. She says she chose her profession because it gives her the opportunity to make a difference every day. She grew up in a loving family in Pembroke Pines. She had no memories of her birth parents and considered her mom and dad from her adoptive family to be her parents. Although she always wondered about her roots, she felt that limited paperwork and resources would make it impossible to trace them. Kerry’s biological sister Shannon Jean, however, was determined to find a way. When Kerry was eight years old, she reconnected with her sister at an adoption agency party and they stayed in touch. Shannon was adopted by a different American family when she was 5 ½ years old. She still had several vivid memories of her past, including the day she was separated from her family. She was eager to return to Bani to visit. About two years ago, a friend helped Kerry and Shannon located their birth family. In April 2012, the sisters took a trip to reunite with them. Teleuniverso Canal 29 accompanied them to document the exciting and emotional experience. “I had no idea what to expect,” said Kerry. “I tried to picture the moment when I would finally get to embrace the woman who brought me into the world. Hearing my mom’s voice for the first time was like a dream. I never cried so hard in my life.” Kerry learned that she and her sister were very sick and malnourished when they were put up for adoption. Her parents could not afford to raise them. “My mother loved us so much that she had to give us up,” said Kerry. “It takes an incredible woman to do that.” During the visit, Kerry and her sister spent time touring the country, getting to know relatives and experiencing the culture. As expected, Kerry found that her birth family leads a very different life from hers. Her parents are divorced. Her mother lives in a one-room shack, where the rent is $11 per month. She does not have a car or electricity. “We have so much here in the United States, but we often take it for granted,” said Kerry. “Finding my family was a miracle. Now I need to make sure that they are safe and secure.” When they returned, the sisters started Giving the Unexpected, which is dedicated to giving unexpectedly, improving the lives of the less fortunate, and offering hope - one person at a time. They surveyed the residents of Bani to find out what they needed most and have found ways to send clothing, hygiene items, money and more. They also held two toy drives to benefit families in the Dominican Republic, as well as the needy in South Florida. Kerry has now taken a total of three trips to Bani. She is hoping to relocate her mother from her shack to a stable home, where she can be cared for by her sons. She is also working on becoming fluent in Spanish. She frequently reminds her students about the importance of volunteering and being a good citizen. “This whole experience has forever changed my life, as well as the lives of many others,” said Kerry. I

magine the best, most fulfilling night of your life. You are with the people you most care about…laughing, joking, enjoying the fresh air, spending quality time together. Now imagine spending that time simultaneously accomplishing something wonderful. You have the opportunity to stop imagining and go experience it, all of it. On Saturday May 2 & 3, 2015, the City of Weston is hosting “Relay For Life” the nationwide signature event for the American Cancer Society and the single largest non-profit event in the world. Between the months of March and June 2015, relays will be held in over 5,000 communities, which includes 23 countries throughout the word. Historically, this four month annual drive towards raising funds for the fight against cancer has raised over $374,000,000. Last year, the city of Weston’s relay teams raised $264,000 ranking the Weston Relay #3 in the state and #1 in Broward! It is about a community that takes up the fight against cancer in a way that is a celebratory, fun and a unique experience. Unlike any other walk or fundraising event, Relay for Life is the overnight experience of a lifetime!! Participating is easy, fun and, at times, deep felt and healing. To be a relay participant, gather teams of people from the communities and organizations of which you belong and join at the Cypress Bay High School football field and stadium during the hours of 4:00PM May 2nd and 6:00AM May 3rd to walk, run, stroll and even roll against cancer. Registration can be completed at www.relayforlife.org/westonfl and is just $10 per team member or individual. Teams keep at least one member of the team walking and representing the team at all times during the event. Teams are formed from groups of families and friends, co-workers, and civic or religious organizations.

During the event, you will enjoy around-the-clock family-oriented fun and entertainment in your own neighborhood, while raising funds and awareness in the battle against cancer. From start to finish there will be wonderful moments of celebration, reflection, camaraderie and triumph. Honoring Survivors! In each community, cancer survivors, young and old, are invited to participate in the Opening Ceremony of the Relay For Life by walking the Survivor’s Victory Lap around the track. This symbolic tribute honors cancer survivors and celebrates life! Candlelight/Luminaria Ceremony! The opening festivities will be followed with a candlelight ceremony at Relay For Life. All those who wish to will have the opportunity to light a candle, or have one lit in their absence, as a memorial to a loved one who has lost their battle to cancer or in honor of a cancer survivor. The heartfelt love and caring shared by friends and family during this ceremony is moving and healing. Fun! On Relay night, participants pitch tents and decorate in the theme their team has chosen and everybody is “Ready to Relay.” Throughout the evening and into the next day, participants enjoy entertainment, games, music, great food, camaraderie and tons of FUN. Long before the last walkers approach the finish line at closing ceremonies, new lifelong friends have been made, old friends and family have been hugged and all hearts have been touched by the magic that is Relay For Life. If you are or know a cancer survivor and would like them to be honored, or if you would like to contribute to the Relay for Life as a team, sponsor or possibly part of the planning committee, please contact team Co-Chair and Weston resident Anita Mohan via email: westonrelayforlife@comcast.net, Twitter: WestonRelay or Facebook: Relay For Life of Weston. www.RelayForLife.org/WestonFL.

Medals are awarded to the top three finishers in several categories and all paid participants are given a custom lapel pin, a commemorative moisture control t-shirt and a sling bag. Trophies are also awarded to the overall winners. Every year, a special presentation is awarded to a child who is currently battling cancer. “It is wonderful to be able to make an immediate impact in these children’s lives,” says Christy, a nail technician in Hollywood. “During our time in need, the South Florida community pulled together for us so that we could spend every day with Kendra and we did not have to worry about where our mortgage payment was coming from,” said Christy. Marc and Christy are the President and Vice President of Kendra’s Kisses and work part time at it raising $20,000 a year through events such as this 5K race. Kendra’s Kisses is a charitable, non-profit organization dedicated to providing assistance in the form of social, emotional, and financial support to families and caregivers in need when a child or children of that family is diagnosed with a life threatening illness. T

he Kendra’s Kisses Foundation 7th Annual Memorial 5K (3.1 miles) will take place on March 22, 2015 at Markham Park in Sunrise, FL at 7:30am. All proceeds from the race will benefit Kendra’s Kisses, the Kendra Vermont Foundation. This foundation was established in May 2007 after Marc and Christy Vermont’s four-year-old daughter Kendra passed away from a malignant brain tumor. Kendra was initially treated at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, FL and then, after her cancer was found to be more advanced than originally diagnosed, they went to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. St. Jude pays for the costs involved with treatments, but there are many other costs that are not covered. “The world does not put everything on hold when you are dealt the blow of childhood cancer. Bills still need to be paid and that is where Kendra’s Kisses steps in with its grant program”, says Marc who works for Hallandale Beach Fire Rescue. I got the idea to do a 5K fundraiser for Kendra’s Kisses after participating in races supporting St. Jude. I know there is a great running community in South Florida and they are more than eager to help out a great cause. Making this event a run and walk allows everyone to come out and have a good time, raise money, and get some free goodies,” says

ugby is a fun sport that just about anyone can play, regardless of size, speed, strength or gender. It continues to grow in popularity throughout the world, as well as right here in Weston. The Okapi Wanderers Rugby FC offers kids, ages 8 to 16, an opportunity to play the sport. Derived from a game of football (American soccer) at Rugby School in England in 1823, rugby players use strength, speed and strategy to move a ball into an opponent’s territory. The free-flowing game is fast-paced and action-packed, with few stoppages and continuous possession changes. Players must work well together as a team. Although the Okapi Wanderers Rugby Club was formed recently, most of the club’s coaches and players have been involved in the sport for many years. The players chose the name after they discovered the Okapi, an endangered animal from Central America that is a mix of a zebra and giraffe. They thought it was fitting, since the team is comprised of so many different cultures, backgrounds and religions. From October to May, the club competes against other players in the South Florida area as part of the Florida Youth Rugby Union. Players, from beginner to advanced, can join at any point in the season. Each game ends with a winner and loser, as well as a big celebration. Unlike most sports, the players and families from both teams stay for a traditional gathering after the game finishes. It is an opportunity to build camaraderie among teammates, as well as in the rugby community. “Rugby is more than just a game; it is a lifestyle,” said

Mariana Gallo, one of the founders of the rugby club. Three years ago, she moved to South Florida from Argentina, where rugby was an integral part of her life. Her two sons, Franco, 13, and Tomas, 16, play on the team and hope to become professional rugby players. “We want everyone in South Florida to have an opportunity to experience rugby, which is why we helped to start the Okapi Wanderers Rugby FC,” she continued. “We welcome kids of all sizes and shapes. Once kids try it, they always fall in love with the sport. All they need to get started is a mouth guard and a pair of cleats.” Over the summer, the players gave back to the community. They taught the game of rugby to some younger kids at a school in Pompano. They also helped to restore a sand dune in Sunny Isles by picking up garbage and planting native trees. After they finished, they played a game of rugby on the beach. “We are always looking for ways that the kids can enjoy activities together, while helping others,” said Gallo. The kids also give back to each other. The older players work with the younger ones to teach them the game. When players grow out of their cleats, they give them to other players on the team to use. “We are like one big family,” said Gallo. “We always have a great time together both on and off the field.” The Okapi Wanderers Rugby FC is a nonprofit organization. Choosing the Right Summer Experience By Jodi Cohen, MSEd; Director of Early Childhood; Temple Dor Dorim

M

elting ice pops dripping down arms, the stickiness rinsed with a run through the sprinklers. Color War, Capture the Flag, potato sack races…shaving cream, cheers and chants, watermelon poolside…crafts, flashlights, card games and gooey S’mores. As parents reminisce, these are the memories they share… these are the memories of summer. Even though summer is still a few months off, it’s already time to sort through choices and make plans for the family. As camps begin requesting deposits earlier and earlier each year, parents are faced with the daunting task of figuring out what they should do with their children for the summer. Travel camp, day camp, sleep away or sports camp? Maybe the choice is between a specialty camp like dance or football, or maybe it’s a trip up North to stay with the grandparents. With so many choices it can be overwhelming. So how does a parent decide? So many times we base our decisions on what our own memories are and this is how we decide for our children. Whether we loved or didn’t enjoy camp as a kid, we might decide to choose a camp based on those experiences. Although it’s understandable that our own experiences from childhood influence our bias, it’s not necessarily in the best interest of our children. The first thing a parent needs to ask themselves is what type of camp meets their individual child’s needs. Sit down and list their interests. Does your child

love art? Love to play sports? Do they thrive on constant action from one activity to the next or are they more comfortable moving at a more leisurely pace? Do they need a smaller more personal environment? Is your child outdoors often or are they continually asking to go back inside? These kinds of questions should help narrow down the big list of choices. After deciding what type of camp, the next criteria for choosing a camp should be what you want your child to get out of their camp experience. Aside from enjoying it, are there specific skills you hope they’ll develop over the summer? Whether it’s improving at a sport, making friends or becoming more independent, is the camp you’re choosing conducive to this being accomplished? Last but not least, the camp has to meet your needs as a parent in regard to comfort level when it comes to safety, supervision, location and, of course, financial commitment. For instance, what kind of supervision are you as a parent comfortable with for your child’s age and do the camps you’re looking at have that type of supervision? What is your price limit and are you looking at camp options that keep you within your financial comfort zone? Once you have narrowed down the list of camps that meet these criteria, you can then allow your child to choose from those options. We all want our children to walk away with those cherished summer memories of our pasts. While it’s important to pick experiences for our children that will last them a lifetime, ones we know they’ll remember forever, we need to keep in mind that those memories may be a little different than our own… and that’s ok.

u ring the day, Pete Pecci is known for skills as a financial advisor. Many nights and weekends, however, he is better known by his Indian name “Casper,” as he participates in activities for the Weston YMCA Family Center’s Y-Indian Princess program with his 13-year-old daughter, “Pink Flower” (a.k.a. Nadine). Y-Princess helps fathers and their daughters develop lasting relationships. It is for dads who want to spend quality time with their daughters doing planned activities. It is different from many other programs, because it is specifically intended to be a parent AND child organization. “It has been a wonderful way for Nadine and me to develop a

close relationship as we create memories,” said Pecci. “We participate in activities that we would not normally do together.” Pecci joined the Y-Princess program in 2005, when Nadine was only four years old. He is a member of the Mohave tribe. He is also Chief of the Miccosukee Nation, which is made up of nine different tribes and approximately 260 members from throughout South Florida. The girls range in age from 4 to 15. Most of them join when they are young and don’t leave the program until they must. “It has been a great way for Nadine to meet friends outside of school, church and soccer,” said Pecci. “I have also had the opportunity to socialize with other like-minded individuals that are all there for the benefit of kids.” Each tribe meets monthly at a different member’s home for refreshments and a special activity. They play games, make crafts, tell stories, and plan for tribal events, nation events or community activities. The tribe also goes on outings to the bowling alley, movies, water parks and other places. The entire Nation also gets together for monthly events. During the Pinewood Derby, fathers and daughters construct and race a wooden car to win prizes for the Fastest Car, Most Bling, Most Indian and more. They have had campouts in Walt Disney World’s Fort Wilderness, Museum of Science and Discovery, Cape Canaveral and the Keys. They visited Children’s Harbor to paint and

donate food. Once a year, there is also a formal Father-Daughter dance. One of the most anticipated annual events is the fall campout at Circle F. The tribes participate in a variety of competitions. The girls design costumes, write and perform skits, create tabletop displays, compete in relay and canoe races, decorate cabins and more. They welcome new members and bid farewell to fathers and daughters who “break arrow” as they prepare to exit the program. They also pass the baton to the new leaders of the tribe and nation. As the girls get older, they typically mentor the younger ones. Many of them spend as many as eleven years in the program and find it difficult to leave. “Over the years, many of the fathers and daughters deal with life-altering issues, such as divorce, job loss and death,” said Pecci. “The members of the tribe and nation are always there to help them through difficult times.” Pecci says that Nadine is passionate about the program and hates to miss any activities. “It will be a sad day for both of us when she is too old to stay in the group,” said Pecci. New members can enter the program at any time in the year. They can join an existing tribe or start their own. In spring 2003, 16-year-old Rebecca Kirtman initiated

50

a dress drive at Nova High School for needy girls in South Florida. She collected 250 prom dresses and numerous accessories so that they could attend their high school proms in style. A few months later, on August 20, Rebecca tragically passed away in an automobile accident. Sophomore Rachel Dagen recently launched a Becca’s Closet club at Western High School to help carry on her legacy. Rebecca’s mother, Pam Kirtman, started Becca’s Closet soon after her death. The nonprofit organization donates formal dresses to high school girls with financial needs who otherwise would not be able to attend their schools’ military balls, homecomings and proms. Dresses have to be less than five years old and can be any size or style. Becca’s Closet also awards scholarships to deserving high school students. There are currently clubs in nearly every state in the nation. Rachel, who enjoys fashion and shopping, says that she was inspired by Rebecca’s story. “I wanted to start the club at my school,” said Rachel. “As soon as I heard about Rebecca, I knew that I had found the perfect one. It is a great way to spend time doing something I love for a wonderful cause. I want to make sure that all girls have an opportunity to experience what it is like to feel special

in a dress at their homecomings and proms. Every girl deserves that.” In spring 2014, Rachel got approval from school administrators to form the club. One of her favorite teachers, Kara Mullins, agreed to be the sponsor. She developed a plan and started the club at Western this year. There are currently 30 members who have participated in a variety of school wide fundraisers. In October, they held their first dress drive and received over 100 donations. After cleaning out her closet, Rachel was able to contribute ten of her own. “These were dresses that I don’t wear,” said Rachel. “They were just hanging in my closet. Now ten girls can benefit from them. It is a beautiful thing to make such a difference with such a simple gesture.” Rachel says that she and the other club members are looking forward to volunteering at the Becca’s Closet collection site. “I am excited to help the girls pick out the perfect dress for the occasion,” said Rachel. Rachel is a straight “A” student and very involved at her school. She is member of SGA and Interact. She is on the debate team and the online editor for her school newspaper. She plans to study business and attend law school. To donate, find a dress or start a chapter, visit beccascloset.org.

ome are motivated by the competition, while others ride for the fun of it. All of the members of Team Memorial, however, share the same love of cycling and they are looking for others in the community who feel the same way about the sport. Team Memorial’s mission is to encourage everyone to participate in bicycling - whether for recreation, transportation, fitness or competition. Members work together to serve the South Florida community by promoting safer conditions for cyclists and other road and trail users. They are committed to supporting bicycling through education, training and social activities. The group was founded 23 years ago, when several employees of Memorial Healthcare System, a non-profit healthcare organization, started riding together. A few years later, they decided to formalize the group. Today, hundreds of cyclists of all abilities participate in several rides that occur throughout West Broward. The group includes both men and women who represent a wide range of professions. They ride in an organized pack so they can ride competitively, yet safely. Team Memorial rides are open to anyone interested in joining. Some of them include: • Frank’s Classic Ride, led by Frank Sacco, begins at Hawkes Bluff Elementary School in Southwest Ranches at 7:30am. It is a no drop ride with stops for flats and mechanicals. Bikers ride at an average speed of 21–24 mph, with faster speeds at some points in the ride. They ride approximately 50–55 miles on Saturdays and 38–42 miles on Sundays. • Team Memorial Weston Warriors weekend rides, led by Kurt Koetsier, begin at Weston Regional Park, in the parking lot near the outdoor basketball courts at 7:30am. It is a no drop group. There are three different speed groups: 16–18mph, 19–21mph and 22+mph. On Saturdays, 35–50 cyclists ride approximately 40 miles with one rest period. On Sundays, 15–20 cyclists ride 35 miles. There is

a smaller group that rides on Wednesday evenings and meets in the Lakes Plaza Publix at 5:30pm. The pace is approximately 18mph for 25 miles. The group may also add ride on Tuesday and Thursday nights. • On the first Saturday of every quarter, new riders can participate in the Weston Warriors’ Teaching/Beginners ride. They learn about riding in groups, hand/voice signals, pulling and pacing a group, safety, equipment and more. The group rides at a pace of 13–15mph for 18–20 miles. There must be at least three cyclists. • Carlos’ Big Group Ride, led by Carlos Londono, begins at Memorial Hospital Miramar at 7:30am. Riders may be dropped. It is a large peliton ride, which normally does not stop for flats and mechanicals. Bikers ride at an average speed of 22–26, with faster speeds at some points in the ride. They ride approximately 52–56 miles on Saturdays and 40–42 miles on Sundays. Frank Sacco, President and Chief Executive Officer of Memorial Healthcare System, was one of Team Memorial’s founders. “Riding is a great way to say fit and relieve stress,” said Sacco. “I have met so many nice people and enjoy the camaraderie.” Kurt Koetsier started riding six years ago. “Cycling is a great way to get exercise and enjoy the scenery and outdoors,” said Koetsier. “I also love the social aspect of riding in a group.” There is no cost to join. Those who register online, however, are eligible to receive a Louis Garnau shirt, shorts and socks at cost. They also gain access to the VIP tent at the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Tour de Broward, which will be held on February 22, 2015. Hawkes Bluff Elementary School is located at 5900 SW 160th Avenue in Southwest Ranches. Memorial Hospital Miramar is located at 1901 S.W. 172nd Avenue in Miramar. Weston Regional Park is located on the corner of Saddle Club and South Post Roads, at the traffic circle. For more information, visit www.teammemorial.com.

BUT IT DIDN’T LOOK LIKE A SEIZURE:

ReCogniZing ePiLePSy in youR CHiLD By Kelly Wilson

W

hat would go through your mind if you were talking to your child and in the midst of your conversation, he or she begins to “daydream” and is unresponsive to your verbal or visual cues? Would you know what to do or even understand what is happening? Most of us would assume the child is distracted or uninterested in what we have to say; however, the reality is there may be something else occurring. Currently, nearly 3 million people in the United States live with epilepsy with an additional 200,000 new cases of epilepsy diagnosed annually (epilepsy.com). In Florida alone, there are approximately 375,000 people living with epilepsy, including 45,000 children. Despite the fact that between 4 and 10 out of every 1,000 people currently live with active seizures, there remains a vast misunderstanding of seizure manifestations and determining which seizures are epileptic. There are over a dozen categories of seizures, yet most of the general population is aware of only the “Grand Mal” type. It is imperative for parents to understand that seizure symptoms can vary vastly. Among many others, seizures can present as any of the following: • Short attention blackouts presented as daydreaming • Rapid blinking • Head nodding • A blank stare followed by chewing, picking at clothes, mumbling or random movements • Sudden fear, anger or panic for no reason • Muscle jerks of arms, legs or body • Odd changes in the way things look, sound, smell or feel Epilepsy can become apparent in a patient during infancy or may not expose itself until adolescence or adulthood. It can happen to anyone at any time and 1 in 26 people will experience a seizure in their lifetime. In fact, many famous and successful people have had epilepsy including rock star Neil Young and keynote speaker of 33rd Annual Epilepsy Foundation National Conference, Danny Glover. According to EFOF (The Epilepsy Foundation Florida), Julius Caesar, Charles Dickens, Sir Isaac Newton, Tolstoy and Vincent Van Gogh are believed to have had epilepsy, as well. It is important to know that not all seizures are epileptic and not all are life-long conditions. Seizures can develop as the result of head trauma, high fevers or other illnesses and are recognized to be a co-occurring condition of other concerns such as Autism and Cerebral Palsy. More people have epilepsy than those with Multiple Sclerosis, Muscular Dystrophy, Cerebral Palsy and Parkinson’s combined, yet, despite this frequency of incidence; the stigma associated with epilepsy has stifled sufficient research and funding. Established in 1971, The Epilepsy Foundation of Florida is an affiliate of the national, non-profit organization with eight Florida offices serving 36 of the 67 counties. The foundation is the pinnacle resource for patients with a seizure disorder serving as a medical and educational advocate. They also champion the cause with

various events throughout the year to both raise awareness and funds for medical research and care for the millions living with this condition. Located at 512 NE 3rd Avenue in Ft. Lauderdale, The Epilepsy Foundation Florida encourages those who are in need of guidance to reach out to them. On March 15, 2015, The Epilepsy Foundation will host “Walk the Talk for Epilepsy.” Over 900 walkers will gather at Hollywood Beach North Beach Park, 3601 N Ocean Drive, for the event. The EFOF will also be hosting the “Champions of the Heart Luncheon” in Jacksonville on February 27th. Their goal is to raise $80,000 to send over 100 children to Camp Boggy Creek, founded by the late Paul Newman and General Norman Schwarzkopf for children with chronic or life threatening illnesses. Each year, the foundation provides tuition, transportation and a caseworker to each child who many not have otherwise been able to attend summer camp. The EFOF’s community resource specialist visits schools to educate both the staff as well as the students with age appropriate programs in a one to one or assembly setting. This free service has proven successful in creating sensitivity as well as allowing students to know what to do in the event of a seizure. The educational materials provided by the resource coordinator have proven invaluable in schools across the state. The EFOF also provides services to those with epilepsy in a variety of other ways. First and foremost, the EFOF is in partnership with the Dan Marino Pediatric Center in Weston where patients pay on a sliding scale. They provide advocacy for children needing an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), helping them get on track and providing assistance with testing. In the event of a lapse in insurance, the EFOF can help with Patient Assistance Programs that can often provide 3 months of medical supplies. Parents and adult patients can come to the EFOF for support through Facebook, the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida website (EFOF.org), as well as support groups, all provided as a free service. They also have a Tool Kit for parents with information on how to help children who are newly diagnosed, including a seizure log and first aid poster. Just as important as supporting those who have epilepsy, the EFOF also does their part in preventing this condition. In 2013, the EFOF provided over 10,000 free bike helmets to children across the state. If you are concerned or suspect epileptic activity in your child, are in need of additional information or resources for you or your newly diagnosed loved one or are seeking an advocate to help, contract the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida at (954) 779-1509 or visit their website, EFOF.org.

Wednesday, there were crazy hats for “Hats Off to Being Drug Free!” and lastly, there was a sea of red shirts for “Love Yourself, Be Drug Free!” Thursday was full of surprises for the students when a DEA helicopter landed on the school’s field. The two pilots went around the classrooms and spoke with the primary classes and handed out goodies. Also present was the Clan Lab vehicle, where other DEA officers spoke about the many uses of the equipment they utilize towards drug enforcement. Zorro, the drug sniffing police dog made an appearance as well. The middle school also had an exceptional and educational assembly where they heard from Mr. Nickolaus Davis, a Florida State Assistant Prosecutor who explained the legal and financial consequences of making poor choices. Dr. MacDougall, a Broward County Medical Examiner, who often testifies in court on drug cases, also spoke with the kids about the dangers of drugs and what they do to the body, how they cause health problems and often death.

ed Ribbon Week is a national campaign geared at providing communities with a forum for parents, schools, businesses, and law enforcers to come together in search of new and innovative ways to keep kids drug-free. Since its inception in 1988, this campaign has given millions a chance to be visible and vocal in their desire to keep illegal narcotics out of their neighborhoods. It is officially observed every year from October 23rd thru the 31st. Red Ribbon Week evolved as a movement in honor of Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, an agent with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration who was kidnapped and killed in February 1985 while investigating drug traffickers. During the week of October 20th, Imagine Charter School at Weston’s students were well educated on why they should, “Say NO to Drugs!” They kicked off the week on Monday by wearing crazy socks so that they could “Sock it to Drugs.” The next day, students wore their favorite sports jerseys to “Score Points, not Drugs.” On

ast year, Cypress Bay High School’s “DeBAYte” Team was one of 10 teams in the country to be named a “School of Outstanding Distinction” at the National Speech and Debate Association National Tournament. Although Debate Director Megan Loden West agrees that those results are impressive, she is not one to rest on her laurels. This year’s team has already been making headlines, both locally and nationally. “We lost 22 very successful seniors,” said West. “It has been wonderful to see the younger students step up and bring home lots of trophies. They have exceeded my expectations.” West is a seasoned debater, who competed in debate during all four years of high school and all four years at Texas A&M University. Since West arrived at Cypress five years ago to teach debate, it has grown from a small program into one of the most popular classes at the school. There are currently five full-time debate teachers and approximately 1,500 students enrolled in the program. It is not surprising that she was recently nominated for 2014-15 Teacher of the Year. “In debate, the students discuss current events and social issues,” said West. “They work on their research, public speaking, writing, communication, and presentation skills.” Most of the school’s debaters are enrolled in an introductory class with the main goal of becoming members of National Forensic League National Honor Society for speech and debate. They are only required to attend two after school tournaments. If they decide to join the team, they can enroll in a more competitive class the following year. There are currently180 team members who are committed to competing two to three weekends a month, both locally and nationally. They are also committed to winning. Over the summer, 64 Cypress students attended debate camps to sharpen their debate skills. The team includes students from every grade level. The team has brought home a variety of trophies from the local tournaments. At the Nova Sr. Titan Tournament, Cypress had a finalist in every event and won four out of eleven events. The team has also participated in four national tournaments and received accolades at each of them. At the Greenhill Fall Classic in Dallas, junior Jake Steirn finished 9th out of approximately 200 debaters in Lincoln-Douglas Debate and got a qualifying bid for the Tournament of Champions held at the end of the year. At the New York City Invitational, senior Yuval Schmul was a finalist in Congressional Debate and Steirn was a top speaker. At the University of Florida Blue Key Invitational in Gainesville, Cypress was

the 2nd place team out of approximately 200 schools. Freshman twins Lance and Tyler Kotler won Policy, Senior Giancarlo Musetti was a finalist in Extemporaneous Speaking, and junior Magali Trench was a finalist in Humorous Interpretation. At the Glenbrooks Tournament in Chicago, fourteen students placed. Musetti won 3rd place in Extemporaneous Speaking and Trench won 3rd place in Humorous Interpretation. Six students received bids to the Tournament of Champions, including Alison Huang, Gillian Grossen, Ben Kaner, Eric Beilin, Neil Press, and Jordan Press. In the spring, the team is planning to travel to Emory University in Atlanta, Berkeley in San Francisco, and Harvard in Boston. They will conclude the year with national championships in Lexington, Kentucky and Dallas, Texas. West says that she receives tremendous support from the Cypress Bay administration, her Assistant Director Ben Miller, and team of coaches. She acknowledges the debate team could not have achieved these results without all of them. “With the administration’s support, we are able to travel extensively and compete with some of the best private schools in the country,” said West. Jake Steirn has been competing in Lincoln-Douglas for the past four years. He estimates that he dedicates 20 hours a week to debate during non-tournament weeks and 12 hours a day on tournament weekends. “Each month there are new topics and I have to be prepared to argue both sides,” said Steirn. “Debate has helped me sharpen my research, communication and presentation skills and made me a better student. I have also made some great friends.” Senior Gillian Grossen started debating as a freshman. She has competed in Extemporaneous Speaking, Congress and Public Forum Debate. She has been a finalist at several tournaments and won Public Forum at the Nova tournament this year with her partner, fellow senior Alison Huang. She had always dreamed of becoming a surgeon, but now wants to study political science or international relations. “I have fallen in love with everything about debate and can honestly say that it is the best thing I have done in high school,” said Grossen. “I have made so many great friends in debate. I plan to join the debate team in college.” Last year, Cypress Bay debate students received scholarships to compete on speech and debate teams at several universities, including Vanderbilt, University of Texas, University of Alabama and more. West is expecting that many of this year’s seniors will also receive scholarships. For information on Cypress Bay’s Debate Team, visit www.cypressdebayte.com or send an email megan.west@browardschools.org.

n Wednesday, October 15th, the Student Council officers and class representatives for Country Isles Elementary went to Weston City Hall for their annual induction ceremony. Mayor Daniel J. Stermer and Commissioner Jim Norton oversaw the ceremony. Student Council sponsor Stephanie Gomez and Principal Mindy Morgan wanted the students to get a taste of what transpires in the halls of the municipal government by organizing for the induction ceremony to take place at city hall each year. Student Council President Cassandra Rousseau addressed the Mayor and Commissioner informing them of the school’s mission, “Educating Responsible Citizens!” She also spoke to what they will be doing this school year. She mentioned such future events such as: College Week, Red Ribbon Week, Harvest Drive, Roses for Relay, Pennies for Patients, Autism Awareness, Interactive Science and Academic Fair and Community Reader Day. This year’s Student Council officers are President – Cassandra Rousseau, Vice President – Eva Ventrella, Treasurer – Sienna

Rapp, and Secretary – Zachary Petron. “Today is a great learning experience for all of the students,” Gomez stated. “The students come away with a better understanding of the importance of government and giving back to their community.” Gomez believes the experience helps the students build on their character skills, especially that of citizenship. The school is located at 2300 Country Isles Road in Weston. For information, call (754) 323-5250.

ach week, students at Gator Run Elementary visit the Genius Lounge to take a break from the normal routine and explore their passions. During Genius Hour, they research a topic of interest and develop a creative way to share their expertise with the class. “Genius Hour is another way to help students develop a love of learning at a young age,” said Lynn Mitchel, 4th grade team leader. “For one hour, students have the freedom to direct their learning based on their own interests. The goal is for the students to learn something new, not to review something they already know.” Mitchel was one of several 4th grade teachers that introduced the concept last year in their own classrooms. The movement was started at Google, which allows its engineers to spend 20% of their time to work on any pet project that they want. The company has increased productivity and developed many new ideas by allowing people to work on something that interests them. The concept was an instant success at Gator Run and generated many great ideas last year. After researching the rules of soccer and hockey, Alex Daniels combined the rules of soccer and hockey to create “hocker.” Max Loyello, who gets overheated while playing baseball, came up with an idea for a batting glove that cools. Jin Kwon combined technology and fashion to develop the idea for a dress with buttons that dial a cell phone. “Genius Hour is a time that I can finally put away the textbooks and learn about something I am interested in and something that has some meaning to my life,” said 5th grade student Montse Navarette. This year, Principal Keith Peters decided to take Genius Hour to the next level. The school now has a dedicated classroom for Genius Hour. It contains comfortable seating, a large brainstorming lounge, an IPAD cart stocked with 24 iPads, and more. “The goal was to create an inspiring environment for our students,” said Peters. “We wanted the students to get excited about conducting research in a room with flexible seating.”

The Genius Lounge is available to all of the classes in the school, grades kindergarten to 5th, and has the potential to reach over 1,300 students. Teachers sign up for one hour a week for the 12-week period. Although all of the students follow the same basic format, the concept is tailored to each grade and class. Students spend several weeks researching and working on a topic before they start creating a product that will be shared with the class. They can build models, conduct experiments, design something new, improve on something, learn to do something new or investigate how something works. The purpose is not to complete a research report or summarize information, but to build on their understanding of the topic and become an expert. They are required to go beyond Wikipedia and the Internet and must contact at least one expert in the field. At the end of the project, students find an innovative way to present their topic to class. They can use iMovie, PowerPoint, Prezi, Keynote, poster board, models, artwork, comic books, poems, songs and more. “The students are learning so many skills that they will use in the real world,” said Mitchel. “They are also leaning how to present to a group at an early age, which is something that so many people fear.” Mitchel said that the new lounge has inspired the kids to continue to think outside of the box. Bianca Bonaventura, who loves dogs, is designing a new dog toy. Diego Carreno, who is researching black holes, is creating Kahoot!, on online game for the class to play. Caitlin Sullivan, who is investigating rainbows and how they are created, will use hands-on science experiments during her presentation. To encourage inquiry-driven, intrinsically motivated learning, the projects in Genius Hour are typically not graded. “We don’t grade the projects, because we want the students to take risks and try out new ideas,” said Mitchel. “The students will fail during Genius Hour. Each time that happens, we want them to problem solve and figure out another way to make it work.” Gator Run Elementary is located at 1101 Glades Parkway in Weston. he Best Buddies chapter at the Bay hosted its annual Halloween Dance. On Friday, November 7, over 150 members and buddies decked out in costumes and participated in Halloween themed activities. “The dance is something we do every year to celebrate the holiday and for the members to be able to socialize with their buddies and have fun,” said Best Buddies president Erica Strum. Some of the activities that attendees had the opportunity to partake in were a cookie decorating booth, a photo booth, bowling and mummy wrapping. Freshman Alexa Zuckerman said she enjoyed hanging out with her buddy, Gabe, and decorating cookies with him. “All of the activities were really fun, especially making Oreo spiders because we were able to get creative and enjoy the sweet treat after,” Zuckerman said. Vice president Hannah Levinson said the buddies look forward to the dance because it’s a time to listen to music, have fun and dance with their best friends. “The buddies have such a special friendship and events like these give

them an opportunity to socialize outside a school environment,” said Levinson, a junior. Junior Gaby Eseverri, who dressed up as a minion from the movie “Despicable Me”, said her favorite part of the dance was being able to connect with her buddy Grant and the other buddies there. “Seeing all of the buddies smiling, laughing, dancing and having a good time was extremely rewarding,” said Eseverri, club treasurer. For Levinson, knowing that she is a part of an event that the buddies look forward to every year is truly something special. “Seeing the buddies have an amazing time with a smile on their faces and showing their best dance moves is what it’s all about,” Levinson said. “The friendships that are created through this club are real and that’s the most important thing.” Cypress Bay High School is located at 18600 Vista Park Blvd. in Weston. Check this notebook every night to ensure all work that is assigned is being completed at home. If your child is old enough to make effective use of a planner/calendar, teach him or her to block out time on the daily calendar for all commitments (school, activities, work, studying, dinner and sleep) and write down all upcoming tests, quizzes and projects on the appropriate calendar dates. For students who use smartphones or tablets, consider a student planner app such as myHomework or iStudiez Pro, which each allow students to track homework, tests, projects and lessons, receive reminders for upcoming tests and assignments, and manage their class and life schedules. The better your child is at time management, the more prepared he or she will be for high school and college academics. Make checklists. Introduce routines for all chores and tasks in your household and create checklists to help your child get familiar with the necessary steps. This also will help your child become more independent and give him or her a sense of responsibility and fulfillment. For example, a morning checklist might include picking out clothes and getting dressed, brushing teeth, making the bed, preparing the backpack, making lunch and so on. Show your child that good organization is important in everything that he or she does. Make tidying up a nightly activity. Every study or homework session should be followed by five minutes of putting away supplies, straightening the desk and getting the backpack ready for the next day. Get your child into the habit of finishing each homework period this way. Effective organization is an asset that will help your child as a student and a person throughout his or her life. As your child embraces this skill, studying and homework will become much more fluid processes—and your child will have the tools to be a more independent, successful student.

ood study habits and organizational skills can mean the difference between a successful student and a poor performer. A student who possesses the intellect to do well in school but lacks the organizational skills may easily fall behind and suffer from poor grades—especially as the workload in school increases and his or her schedule becomes more demanding. On the other hand, a child who struggles in school already and has trouble keeping track of assignments or is constantly losing things may find school challenges even more insurmountable. Here are a few tips to help your child become a more organized student: Establish a homework routine. Your after-school and evening routine should include a set time for homework, dinner, extracurricular activities and bedtime. During homework time, your child should begin by making a to-do list of his or her top priorities for the session, and he or she should check off items as completed. Your child’s study space should be free from distractions and stocked with the supplies needed so that your child can quickly dive into each homework session. Make use of a planner, homework notebook or planner app. One of the most common issues with disorganized students is that they forget or lose track of what they are supposed to work on each evening. Your child should have a simple notebook in which to write down the following—each and every day: • Each class/subject • Homework assigned for each class (or “no homework”) • Upcoming test/quiz dates or projects mentioned by the teacher

his summer, my eldest son approached his father and I and announced he wanted to learn to play Chess. Given his propensity to have a rather truncated attention span for such tasks and because he had a full agenda over the break, we declined his request for the time being. Imagine how pleasantly surprised we all were when, at third grade orientation, we learned the students will be studying the ins-and-outs of the skillful pastime as a part of the curriculum. There are approximately 34,000 second and third grade students in the State of Florida studying the intricacies of Chess, including those at Indian Trace Elementary. The program piloted in three Sunrise schools last year and shortly thereafter, over 100 principals volunteered to include the program in their own schools. The system teaches the students by starting with one piece and learning it completely, then adding additional pieces as skills progress. The program utilizes a fantasy-style video, a large wall mounted chessboard and board with pieces the students can use with an opponent. From these basics, the teachers adopt methods best suited the needs of their classroom. The day these pictures were taken, Mrs. Kozlowsky’s students sat on the floor to play, Mrs. Winkopp’s class enjoyed their lesson in groups of two and three while at their desks, and Mrs. Gorman’s class interacted with the video while the lights were dimmed. Mark Strauss, Broward’s Director of School Performance and Accountability

stated, “Chess is the means to an end. The game teaches accountability through analytical skills disguised as a game. To a child, learning is not work,” he added. “The act of sitting and filling in a bubble sheet is work.” Assistant Principal Daphne Browne explained the children are “learning the correct vocabulary and etiquette” of this thinking man’s game. She is noticing it challenges children with concerns such as ADHD to do well and to concentrate in a fun way. She see her students thinking two to three steps ahead and has noted chess is wonderful for “those who are spatially, logically and mathematically oriented.” Joseph K, in Mrs. Kozlowsky’s class, has been playing for about a year. His mother taught him the basics, now he is enjoying learning more about the black and white pieces and how they interact on the checkered board. Joseph explained why he enjoys the game, “It is a really nice game. There are many things to do in it. It’s fun to challenge other people.” He is excitedly anticipating the day he is able to use all the pieces in class because he thinks, “a lot of people in my class could be a good challenger.” While most students will not realize the life and practical skills being absorbed through the chess program, all will benefit from it. Whether they are gaining sportsmanship, social communication and etiquette skills or possibly finding a life passion, the Scholastic Chess curriculum is a welcome addition.

ennis matches in the courtyard, the principal arriving on a monster truck and boys dressing up as girls. Although this may seem like a crazy prank to some schools, at the Bay, the annual Homecoming Week was underway. Throughout the week of October 13-18, everyone was encouraged to deck out in his or her best spirit attire, corresponding to the themed day planned. “Homecoming week is always fantastic,” junior Jordan Selvidge said. “When there are thousands of kids dressed up with their best school spirit, taking pictures with friends and cheering and screaming at the pep rally, it is bound to be a memorable experience.” On Twin Day, junior Simon Santurian dressed up as a tennis player and matched with a group of over 20 guys. During seventh period lunch, Santurian and his friends participated in a tennis match in the middle of the courtyard. “Honestly, it was probably one of the most funny and enjoyable days I’ve ever had at Cypress,” Santurian said. “It was amazing that we could make so many people laugh and enjoy watching us play.” To start off the week, Monday’s themed day was Marvel Superheroes, followed by Student Double Tuesday, “On Wednesday’s We Wear Pink,” Rock-n-Roll Thursday and class colors on Friday. Student Government (SGA) president Taylor Bakalar said the homecoming committee chose the themes for the spirit days according to interest from the student body and to the “Twilight” movie theme. Junior Matthew Lorenzo dressed up as superman for Marvel Monday by sporting a superman cape and t-shirt. Lorenzo said he was looking forward to homecoming Spirit Week because it was a fun opportunity to dress out and take pictures with his friends. “Now that I am a junior at Cypress, I feel like I am a bigger part of the school. So I show my school spirit by going all out,” Lorenzo said. “I like to show others that I am proud of my school and that I have a lot of school spirit.” On Tuesday, students grabbed their favorite companion and dressed up as “Stunt Doubles.” Bakalar said that this themed day was one of the most popular in the past and SGA made sure to include it when making plans for the week. “The students love matching and twinning with their friend or group of friends. Everyone’s outfits reflected their personalities and creativity,” she said. Teachers and administration also participated in Twin Day. The entire guidance department matched with Dr. Seuss shirts modeling after “Thing 1” but numbering all the way to 17. Guidance secretary Conchita Rodriguez said she was excited to match with her fellow employees and show school spirit in a creative and fun way. “We love working here and love being a part of whatever the school is doing,” Ms. Rodriguez said. “It was a lot of fun dressing up, especially because of the blue wigs and the matching t-shirts.”

The “Mean Girls” spirit took over as the student body sported their best pink attire, dedicated to the popular movie quote, “On Wednesdays we wear pink.” Senior Agus Zambrano dressed up as a girl with five of his friends. Zambrano wore a dress and a blonde wig to get into character. “We wanted to go all out because it is our senior year and when we were freshmen, we thought being those seniors that dressed up was awesome, so we figured it was our turn,” Zambrano said. On Thursday, sophomore Maeghanan Fitzgerald wore a flannel shirt, a black tank top and leggings for Rock-n-Roll day. “I dressed up with friends because I thought it was a fun day to match and take pictures,” Fitzgerald said. “It was cool to feel like a rock star for a day and see everyone dressed up and matching with friends.” Homecoming week concluded with the annual Pep Rally during eighth period on the football field. Seniors Chloe Nelson and John Batista were the emcees. Decked out in racecar attire, Nelson said she was thrilled when she found out she would be hosting the event and wanted to ensure that everyone who attended had a great time. “It was such an honor and such an amazing experience to host the pep rally,” Nelson said. “I loved being able to stand where I was, in front of all the screaming students decked out in their class colors and see the amount of spirit that engulfed the football field. It was truly awesome.” At the pep rally, there were over 20 floats representing different clubs and organizations. Entering in the contest to win “Best Float,” Best Buddies, Promoting Relationships In Diversity Education (PRIDE), Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) and Spanish Honor Society (SHS) were just a few of the clubs represented. English Honor Society (EHS) had a “Great Gatsby” themed float. EHS secretary Federico Trigo said he was excited to dress up as main character, Jay Gatsby, and for the club to represent one of the classic English books. “The energy that we got out of the crowd was awesome and even though not everyone cheered for our float, whenever we got a group that made some noise for us, it felt pretty great,” Trigo said. Principal Scott Neely made his entrance to the Pep Rally in a grand fashion, coming in on an American flag monster truck. Mr. Neely said it has been a tradition to come in in a unique and creative way and wanted to surprise the students with something great. “Coming in on the monster truck was a great opportunity for me to hype everyone up in the crowd and give everyone some Cypress Bay love,” Mr. Neely said. Manatee Bay Elementary School

We the People...

A Journey Through the Constitution By Tina Strauss

By Danielle Bush, Student, Print News Editor

The students in Mrs. Jefferson’s fourth grade gifted/high achiever class at Manatee Bay Elementary have been very busy learning about the founding fathers and the birth of the United States Constitution. Students did an in-depth study that included reading several books on the Constitution and memorizing the Preamble to the Constitution. In addition, they studied the difference between a democracy and a monarchy and learned about how the government of the United States is set up. The students learned about the three branches of government and how they balance each other and about the Senate and House of Representatives. As a culminating activity, the children presented a re-enactment of the Constitutional Convention in the form of an one-act play to other classes parents and invited guests. The class was invited by the City of Weston to recite the Pledge of Allegiance at the opening of a City Council meeting. They impressed the Council members with a recitation of the Preamble as well and were also invited to perform at the Cypress Bay Zone Showcase, where they sang a beautiful, musical rendition of the Preamble. The students were shining stars and made their school proud! Manatee Bay Elementary is located at 19200 Manatee Isles Drive in Weston. For information, call (754) 323-6450.
