Dear Readers:
I can’t believe another holiday season is already upon us. Family life keeps us so busy, that time seems to fly by. I hope you have a chance to enjoy all that this holiday season has to offer, whether it's spending much-needed time together as a family, visiting with extended family in or out of town, or just being present and in the moment to take it all in.
The winter season is my favorite time of year in South Florida. The weather is perfect, and it’s a beautiful time to be outside. Check out our Calendar in the Events Section (green tab) for all the fun holiday-themed events our wonderful cities have lined up for your enjoyment. As we head into the new year, it’s the perfect time to try a new sport or outdoor activity, visit local attractions, attend local events, or simply enjoy the time in the fresh air together as a family.
In honor of Veterans Day this November, remember to thank all the veterans in our communities for their dedicated service to our country. November is also the time to register for the upcoming winter & spring sports seasons. All new registration periods can be found in the Main Directory (red tab) including baseball, basketball, flag football, soccer, softball and more!
Broward County Public Schools will be closed for Thanksgiving Break the week of November 24 – 28. And, Winter Break begins with an early release day on Friday, December 19 - Monday, January 5, 2026. Registration is open now for holiday break camps, programs, and activities that are taking place during these weeks, so be sure to sign up early. Enrichment programs and activities are ongoing and include dance, gymnastics, martial arts, golf and tennis, most of which offer days- off programs as well as week-long camps, too!
I want to wish you and your family a very happy holiday season. Cheers to a happy, healthy new year!
My Best to you!

Dear Cooper City Residents,
As we look ahead to the close of 2025, I am once again reminded of how fortunate we are to call Cooper City “Someplace Special.” This past year, our community has continued to grow and thrive, welcoming new residents and strengthening the bonds that make our hometown so unique. In September, the City Commission worked diligently to finalize a budget that not only sustains but improves the services we provide. I am proud to share that we lowered the operating millage rate to 5.845. This marks the sixth consecutive year Cooper City has reduced its millage rate, while not only maintaining staffing and service levels but also enhancing them. This continued commitment to fiscal responsibility ensures that we can meet today’s needs while planning for the future. When it comes to improving our recreational spaces, we have seen tremendous progress. Cooper City has not only applied for multiple grants but also secured millions of dollars in funding to reinvest directly into our community. A portion of these dollars has already gone toward playground improvements at the Community Center Tot Lot and Michael D. “City Mike” Riordan Park. Upgrades are also underway at Suellen H. Fardelmann Sports Complex and Ellie Kozak Park, with even more playground reinvigoration planned in the year ahead. These efforts reflect our ongoing priority to provide safe, modern, and inclusive spaces for our children to enjoy.
We also have an exciting season of community events approaching. On Friday, November 7, we invite you to join us for Eat to the Beat at the Community Center from 6:30PM-9:00PM, this is a fun-filled evening of live music and tasty bites provided by local food trucks. On Veterans Day, November 11, we will pause to honor our nation’s heroes with a ceremony at 11:00AM at Memorial Park. Later in the month, and before you prepare to gather with family and friends for Thanksgiving, our Fall Garage Sale returns on November 22 from 7:00AM-11:00AM at Flamingo West Park, offering residents a chance to discover great bargains and connect with neighbors.
The holiday season in Cooper City really gets going with one of our most beloved traditions, Light Up Cooper City, on Friday, December 5 from 6:30PM-9:00PM at Memorial Park. This magical evening will feature festive performances, a holiday bazaar, and the arrival of Santa himself, providing wonderful photo opportunities for the entire family. On Friday, December 12, families can join us at the Community Center for Cookies and Cocoa with Santa, a warm and joyful celebration for children of all ages. Our Parks and Recreation Department will also be hosting a Menorah Lighting on Monday, December 15 in Memorial Park, so I encourage you to visit www.CooperCity.gov/Calendar for complete details on this and all of our upcoming events.
As always, I am grateful for the trust and support you continue to place in your City leaders. Together, we are ensuring that Cooper City remains a safe, vibrant, and welcoming community. I know that through our shared efforts, we reaffirm that Cooper City will always be “Someplace Special.”
Sincerely,
James Curran Mayor of Cooper City
Hello Davie Residents,
It’s hard to believe that 2025 is nearing an end. With a new school year in full swing and the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s important to find opportunities to slow down and spend quality time with family and friends. The Town of Davie Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has a wide variety of programs, activities, and community events for both our Davie residents and visitors to enjoy.
An excellent way for students to unwind after a day in the classroom is to participate in youth sports. Registration for Town’s Youth Baseball and T-ball is from December 1 - January 25, 2026. Youth sports offer children physical, mental and social benefits and provide an important outlet for energy. Youth sports also teach vital life skills such as discipline, cooperation, and how to handle both success and disappointment, which are crucial for academic success. Please come out and “Play Ball” with our outstanding sports team. With the holidays right around the corner, there are numerous special events for Davie families to enjoy. Join us at the Town of Davie’s Centennial Celebration on Saturday, November 8 from 5:30PM-9:30PM. We are excited to celebrate the Town’s 100th birthday with western activities, live music, a laser light show, and more! This event is exclusively for Davie residents, and pre-registration is required to attend. Call (954) 327-3941 to register. Military veterans of the United States Armed Forces will be honored at the Town of Davie’s annual Veterans Day Ceremony taking place at Veterans Park on Tuesday, November 11 at 10:00AM. Since parking is limited at Veterans Park, the Town will provide shuttle service to and from the Davie Arena at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. We are also excited to announce that the Movie in the Park series will return to Bamford Sports Complex this year, beginning on October 17 (Coco), November 14 (Freebirds) and December 12 (Christmas Chronicles). Showtimes start at 7:00PM, so bring your entire family to enjoy a night out at the park. To get a jump start on your holiday shopping, join us at the Town’s annual Holiday Craft Show that will take place on November 22 & 23 inside the Davie Arena with over 100 local arts and crafts vendors. Admission is free and local entertainment will be live on stage throughout both days for your enjoyment. On Saturday, December 6, Town Council members, the Vice-Mayor, and I “flip the switch” during our annual Holiday Lighting of the Greens Event at Bamford Sports Complex. Come join us for a night of fun, including a lighted horse parade, youth activities and games, and live performances on our entertainment stage. When looking at Town’s activities, whether it's community special events, swimming, fitness, youth sports, or recreation classes for all ages, the Town of Davie Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has something to offer everyone in your family. For more information about any of our Town’s programs, call (954) 327-3941. You will find all our classes and programs on our website at www.davie-fl.gov.
As always, see you in the parks!
Sincerely,
Judy Paul Town of Davie Mayor
Greetings Plantation Residents:
As we leave the sweltering heat behind, I invite you to get outside and enjoy the parks and activities planned for the upcoming months.
This is one of my favorite seasons in Plantation, with the Rock the Park concert series starting on November 7 at Pine Island Park, and our Holiday Parade traveling down Broward Boulevard on November 22. December will bring joy with our annual Light Up City Hall, Breakfast with Santa, and Santa’s Visit events. In January, back by popular demand, is the Great Plantation Campout at Volunteer Park. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we invite you to join us for a day of community service.
Who let the dogs out? We did! The month wraps up with Doggie Palooza at Happy Tails Dog Park, where hopefully, pups find forever homes, and you can buy the perfect dress for your sweet Great Dane. Please visit Plantation. org for more information and upcoming events.
Over the last decade, the city has made increased accessibility for all residents a priority. As facilities and parks are built or redesigned, there is an effort to exceed ADA standards. Our Rae Carole Armstrong Liberty Tree Park is currently being renovated and will feature a thoughtfully designed outdoor play area where children of all abilities can play together, promoting physical, emotional, and social development for everyone.
Additionally, the playground will be bordered by beautiful native trees and plants. We were fortunate to receive a FRDAP grant to help cover some of the costs of creating this all-inclusive playground. The main goal is to create a space where children and their families can build friendships and develop a sense of belonging through play.
Work has recently been completed at the Plantation Community Center’s tennis courts. The two existing courts, which were already lit, have been upgraded to LED technology, and the six previously unlit courts now also feature LED lighting, offering brighter, whiter light that improves visibility for our tennis players. New landscaping has also been added.
Stay informed about our projects and news from City Hall by subscribing to my regular newsletter and/or my Monday morning Mayor’s Minute at Plantation.org/signmeup. If you'd like to contact me directly, my email address is Mayor@Plantation.org.
Warm regards,
Mayor Nick Sortal Mayor of

Superhero Swim Academy’s mission is to inspire creativity and imagination through swim lessons and our Head Swim Instructor Coach Pam ensures the mission is met each day she steps in the pool.
At just 15 years old, Coach Pam discovered her passion for swimming and teaching, laying the foundation for a career that would transform countless lives. With over 20 years of experience teaching swimming lessons, Coach Pam is more than just a swim instructor; she’s a mentor and creative force that fits in perfectly at Superhero Swim Academy.
Pam’s journey in the world of aquatics began two decades ago, and over the years, she has taught thousands of children how to swim, building their confidence stroke by stroke, and educating the parents of the techniques behind the lessons. Her ability to transform lessons into imaginative, engaging adventures is her true superpower and everyone benefits from having Coach Pam around. It’s this unique approach where playfulness and intensity come together in the pool.
Pam’s expertise doesn’t stop at swim lessons.
She’s also a dedicated mom, and she brings that same nurturing spirit to every class she teaches. Her deep understanding of what parents want for their children—safety, progress, and joy—guides everything she does. Outside of Superhero Swim Academy, Pam is a dedicated swim team coach, where she helps more advanced swimmers refine their technique and push their potential. This means she understands the full spectrum of swimming, from first splashes to competitive strokes.
Coach Pam’s well-rounded knowledge of the swim world, combined with her passion and creativity from day one has matched up with Superhero Swim Academy’s mission, values, and beliefs.
Superhero Swim Academy is lucky to have Pam as part of the team to help train both Superhero coaches and swimmers.
Coach Pam isn’t just a swim coach—she’s a superhero in her own right.

S outh Florida families are feeling the weight of today’s polarized climate. From dinner-table debates to school board meetings making national news, political tension has found its way into everyday life. Children, even very young ones, absorb far more than we realize. They hear the tone in our voices, sense disagreement among adults, and can internalize that stress as anxiety or confusion. As a child psychologist, I worry about the constant stream of headlines and how it can shape a child’s sense of safety and belonging, often more than the issue that began the conversation or difficulty. How Political Stress Affects Children. Our children thrive when they feel that the world around them is predictable and kind. In an environment where adults are frequently reacting to the latest controversy, that sense of security can erode. When children overhear strong opinions or see their parents visibly upset by the news, they may begin to worry that the world is unsafe or that people cannot disagree respectfully. This can lead to increased irritability, sleep issues, and emotional withdrawal. Increasingly we are seeing more symptoms of anxiety in our youth, exacerbated by the issues above. Adolescents, especially, are forming their own identities and values. They are influenced by social media, peers, and online commentary, often without the emotional maturity to filter what they see. The result can be information overload and a deep sense of division that mirrors what they see in adults.
What Parents Can Do
We cannot and should not shield children from the world. What we can do is to model how to process it. Start by regulating your own emotions before discussing hot-button issues. Children learn not just from what we say, but from how we say it. Calm curiosity is contagious. Encourage open dialogue by asking questions like, “What do you think about that?” Do this instead of lecturing. Validate your child’s feelings, even if you disagree with their viewpoint. This shows that respect and love are not conditional on agreement. This will build empathy and confidence. Limit constant news exposure, especially when children are present. Background talk-radio, TV news, and social media feeds can keep anxiety levels high. Replace some of that time with family discussions about values, kindness, honesty, and responsibility. These are the constants that endure regardless of political change. Finally, emphasize that your family’s strength lies in connection, not agreement. When kids know they are heard and valued, they develop resilience the psychological foundation for navigating a complex, divided world. In times of tension, families have a choice: react to the noise, or rise above it. In our homes, we can teach what no policy can legislate, empathy, curiosity, and compassion. That is how we raise emotionally healthy kids, not just in South Florida, but universally. We believe that education extends beyond the classroom at Seminole Middle School. Our mission is to foster a connection, celebrate character, and encourage both academic and personal growth. September was filled with exciting events that brought students, staff, and families together in meaningful ways.
On Monday, September 15, our students and staff kicked off the week with our very first Cookies, Coffee, and Karaoke event. Before the first period began, the cafeteria was buzzing with music, laughter, and sweet treats. Students enjoyed cookies while staff paired theirs with fresh coffee, and anyone brave enough stepped up to the mic to sing a karaoke song of their choice. It was a fun and lighthearted way to start the week, but more importantly, it gave everyone the chance to connect and strengthen the sense of family that makes Seminole Middle such a special place.
Later in the week, on Friday, September 19, our school community came together for two heartwarming celebrations. First, we recognized our Panther of the Month honorees—students who embody Panther pride, leadership, respect, and strong character. These students are nominated and voted on by teachers, and they are always surprised on the day of the award. Parents are secretly notified ahead of time so they can join the administration in the media center to witness the big reveal. When the student walks in, they are greeted with cheers, applause, and the proud smiles of their loved ones. Thanks to the support of our wonderful PTA, the morning
also included a celebratory breakfast where families and staff came together to honor these remarkable Panthers.
That same morning, Seminole Middle proudly participated in Florida Dads Take Your Child to School Day by hosting Donuts with Dad in the media center. Fathers, grandfathers, uncles, stepfathers, brothers, foster fathers, and other male role models joined students from 7:30AM–8:00 AM for donuts, pastries, and plenty of smiles. The event created cherished moments of bonding, offering families a chance to strengthen their relationships and make lasting memories together.
Outside the classroom, our student-athletes are also making us proud. The boys’ and girls’ soccer teams have both had phenomenal starts to their seasons. As of September 26, the boys have secured three wins out of five games, while the girls remain undefeated, with four victories—two by forfeit. Their dedication, teamwork, and Panther pride are clear on the field, and if these results are any indication, our Panthers are headed toward championship-caliber seasons.
From joyful mornings of karaoke and donuts to celebrations of character and athletic success, September has been a month of pride and Panther spirit at Seminole Middle. These events remind us that education is not just about lessons and tests—it’s about building community, celebrating each other, and creating moments that inspire us all.
