Dear Readers,

We’re once again at the beginning of a new school year. I hope you had a fun summer, had time to relax and made some new family memories. Now it’s back to the hustle and bustle of school, schedules, and routines. I hope your child is ready for all their new and exciting experiences that the new school year will bring.

Since this is our Back-to-School issue, you will find everything you need for your child’s return to the classroom. Where to sign up for sports, what afterschool programs are available, where to have a birthday party and so much more. We also have adult activities for parents looking to have some fun. Don’t forget, the city of Pembroke Pines puts on tons of wonderful FREE events for its residents. For example, the Touch-A-Truck Vehicle Expo is a fun way for your kids to climb in and experience big trucks up close. Boo-Ville is another fun event; this is a safe way for kids to Trick-A-Treat. Check out our Events Section for all the details.

As we are now in Hurricane Season please make sure you are prepared and not scrambling at the last minute. Know what you need to have in case of an emergency. See the Be Prepared Hurricane List on page 9. Another important thing is to make sure that you have all the correct insurance coverage.

On a personal note, I would like to share some very exciting news. I’m honored to have been inducted into the Miramar Pembroke Pines Regional Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. I’ve been a member of the chamber for over 18 years, and it is such a big part of my life. I’m looking forward to helping the chamber thrive. If you own a business you should join the MPPRCC. They are a huge resource for local businesses and are committed to fostering growth of our community. The chamber also offers smaller, industry-specific networking groups. We’re very proud to announce that we’ve started a referral group for women in business called Leading Ladies. This is a great opportunity for business owners to meet like-minded individuals and help each other learn and grow together. If you have any questions, or are interested in joining a leads group, please call me.

Lastly, as always we encourage you to stop by to see our advertisers and let them know you saw their ad in the Sports & Activities Directory. Some of them even give discounts when you mention the magazine. Our advertisers are the lifeblood of this magazine, and that’s how we can give this to the public for free.

All my best to you, Linda

Dear Friends:

As your Mayor, I had the honor earlier this year to deliver the 2025 State of the City Address. I’m excited to share how Pembroke Pines continues to grow and how we’re working together to shape the next chapter of our journey. This past year showcased our community’s strength and resilience. Thanks to your support and the dedication of the City Commission, staff, and community partners we’ve made significant strides. Our financial foundation remains strong, and public safety continues to be a top priority. To watch the full 2025 State of the City Address, visit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e60DSWZrecE&t=46s

At the June 18, 2025 Commission Meeting, the City Commission approved advertising an aggregate millage rate of 5.9593 (or $5.96 per $1,000 of taxable value) in the TRIM Notice marking the 10th consecutive year the rate has been reduced. This includes 5.6690 mills for operations and 0.2903 mills for debt service.

The new rate is 0.0305 mills (0.5%) lower than the current one, saving taxpayers $0.03 per $1,000 of taxable value. Additionally, the proposed annual residential fire assessment rate is $408.14, an increase of just $1.43. These actions reflect the City’s ongoing commitment to keeping taxes and fees affordable while maintaining high-quality services.

At the same meeting, I directed staff to begin a series of discussions to advance our Strategic Plan, We Love Pembroke Pines: A Blueprint for a Brighter Future. These conversations will help guide our next steps in key areas like economic development, public safety, environmental sustainability, infrastructure, and overall quality of life. We look forward to incorporating your ideas and feedback as we shape the future together.

We are also diligently working to comply with the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) new regulations that must be completed by April 26, 2031, to remove PFAS (perand polyfluoroalkyl substances) from the drinking water. Our drinking water is safe, and we’re taking steps to make it even safer. PFAS are a group of man-made chemicals that have been used in a wide variety of products since the 1940s. They are known as “forever chemicals” because they can accumulate in humans, animals and the environment. The EPA’s regulation requires city water systems to monitor these chemicals and take action to reduce PFAS level. The City has always had levels well below established limits but is even going further in launching a project at our Water Treatment Plant for construction of a PFAS total removal system. These changes will further ensure health safety, enhance water quality, and full compliance with the upcoming EPA’s National Primary Drinking Water Regulations. Please mark your calendars the next Residential Household Hazardous waste drop, which is scheduled for Saturday, September 6th at the City’s wastewater treatment plant located at 13975 Pembroke Road. Residents must bring proof of Pembroke Pines residency to use this drop off service. For more information, please call (954) 518-9000 or visit our website at www.ppines.com under Public Services.

Please remember that we are still in hurricane season and are quickly approaching our most active time of the year. I hope everyone has their hurricane plans in place and is taking steps to prepare. Be sure to visit our hurricane preparedness information at www.ppines. com/hurricane to help you in your preparations. There are helpful tips, informational videos, resources etc. covering every aspect of making sure we are storm safe.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact my office at (954) 450-1020 or email me at acastillo@ppines.com.

Very Sincerely Yours,

As the sun rises over Pembroke Pines, the campus of Silver Palms Elementary buzzes with purpose. In one first-grade classroom, students greet their teacher in Spanish and transition smoothly into English as they begin their morning routines. This seamless bilingual exchange is just one example of the school’s thriving Dual Language Program where learning two languages is part of everyday life.

At Silver Palms, “Preparing for Tomorrow through Excellence Today” is more than a motto! It’s the driving force behind everything that happens on campus. The school has proudly maintained an A-rating for several consecutive years, a reflection of its commitment to academic excellence, strong instruction, and an unwavering focus on student growth. But just as important as academics are the values that shape daily life here: Respect, Kindness, and Responsibility.

“We want our students to leave here ready for middle school and for life,” says Principal Shearer. “That means developing their minds and their hearts.”

The Dual Language Program, offered to students from kindergarten through fifth grade, sets Silver Palms apart in the community. Students work toward gaining fluency in both English and Spanish, giving them a competitive edge and a deeper appreciation for other cultures. For families, this program has made all the difference. “Our daughter speaks confidently in two languages and helps translate for her grandparents,” shares one of our proud parents. “She’s not just learning vocabulary. She’s connecting generations.”

The culture of Silver Palms is deeply rooted in relationships. Teachers greet students by name, staff members work collaboratively, and families are active partners in their child’s education. Events such as Reading Under the Stars, Literacy Week, Math Night, and a variety of enrichment clubs including Debate, Chess, SECME, and Robotics reflect the school’s commitment to nurturing well-rounded learners in a supportive and inclusive environment. Adding to the vibrancy of school life, the award-winning Silver Palms Singers, under the direction of Mrs. Linero, bring joy, inspiration, and a sense of unity through their heartfelt performances, spreading love and positivity throughout the community.

Though Silver Palms is a neighborhood school, it also accepts student reassignments from outside its zoned area. Seats are limited, especially in the highly sought-after Dual Language Program. The 2025/26 Late Application Window is open through August 22nd and families looking to become part of our Kindness Crew are encouraged to apply.

“Silver Palms has the feel of a small-town school with big opportunities,” says Principal Shearer. “Our families stay because of the strong academics—but they fall in love with the people and the sense of community.”

From its enduring A-rating to the warm, values-driven environment, Silver Palms Elementary continues to stand out as a place where learning, character, and community come together. It’s more than a school; it’s a launchpad for tomorrow’s leaders! 1209 NW 155th Avenue, Pembroke Pines, 33028. (754) 323-7450.

As summer winds down and the sunshine gives way to school bells, we’re thrilled to welcome you to a brand-new school year at Pembroke Lakes Elementary! Whether you’re a returning family or joining us for the first time, we’re so excited to begin this journey with you. The 2025–2026 school year is filled with opportunities for growth, learning, and joyful memories—and we can’t wait to share them with you.

Our dedicated staff has been hard at work all summer to ensure everything is ready for an exciting, safe, and successful school year. But what truly makes Pembroke Lakes special is our partnership with you, our parents and families. Together, we can provide a strong support system every child needs to thrive. To help you and your child get off to a great start, we’re sharing five helpful tips for a smooth and successful school year:

1. Set Goals Together: Take time to talk with your child about their hopes for the year. Help them reflect on their strengths and areas they’d like to grow. Together, set realistic and positive goals—and cheer them on every step of the way. Celebrate achievements big and small, and don’t be afraid to adjust goals as the year progresses.

2. Stay Involved: Your involvement makes a difference! Whether it’s checking your child’s agenda, reviewing school flyers, reading together each night, or attending evening events hosted by our wonderful PTA, your presence and encouragement help build a strong foundation for learning and growth.

3. Create a Learning-Friendly Home: As a proud Cambridge School, we encourage you to surround your child with books and reading materials at their level and encourage daily reading time. Incorporate fun, real-life learning through cooking, gardening, or nature walks. These activities support academic skills like problem-solving, critical thinking, and science exploration.

As a proud Microsoft Showcase School, we also encourage you to provide access to technology to enrich your child’s learning at home.

4. Support Our School Culture: We’re a team—and we need your help! Reinforcing school rules, routines, and goals at home builds consistency and strengthens our community. We value and welcome your input and collaboration as we work together to make Pembroke Lakes a positive, nurturing place for every child.

5. Keep the Lines of Communication Open: Stay connected with your child’s teachers and school staff. Ask questions, share insights, and reach out when you need support. Your child’s teacher is your first point of contact, and our administration, support staff, and PTA are always here to help. For updates and important information, don’t forget to visit our website: www.browardschools.com/ pembrokelakes and stay connect with our PTA at: Instagram.com/PLE_PTA, Facebook. com/PLEPTA, X.com/PLE_PTA, and https://www.plepta.com/.

Here’s to a wonderful school year ahead, full of learning, laughter, and success.

It is with immense excitement and honor to serve as the new principal at Pines Lakes Elementary (PLE) for the 2025-2026 school year.

With over thirty years of educational and administrative experience, I began my journey as an educator in Volusia County, transferred to the Fulton County School District in Georgia, then returned to teaching then administration in Florida to Volusia, Seminole, and Broward counties. For the past 13 years, I have served as the Assistant Principal and Principal at Collins Elementary School where I developed sustainable processes for continuous academic improvement, increased parent involvement, and strategic community partnerships.

As Principal, I BELIEVE that our mission as educators is to cultivate great scholars, nurture responsible citizens, and develop inspiring leaders who will contribute to the thriving of our communities. Pines Lakes Elementary School is a fertile ground for intentional teaching and learning, and I am committed to supporting the PLE staff, students, and community stakeholders in this new chapter. PLE offers a variety of programs such as

Chorus, SECME, Student Council, and the 5000 Role Models that allow students to expand their academic pursuits into areas of performing arts, STEM-related competitions, community service, and college/career readiness. Together, I envision us creating a vibrant and dynamic community that is committed to the growth and success of our children.

We would love for you to JOIN THIS PLE PANTHER PRIDE! The Pines Lakes PTA, School Advisory Committee (SAC), Volunteerism, and School Sponsorships are some of the ways in which parents and the community can meet the academic, social, and emotional needs of our students through viable programs and new initiatives. Working together with common goals, we not only can increase student achievement; we can BE THE CHANGE that we seek for a better tomorrow.

Pines Lakes Elementary is located at 10300 Johnson St, Pembroke Pines, FL 33026. For more information call (754) 323-7100.

On May 7th, after defeating teams from Japan, China and Türkiye, the Robotics and Engineering Student Team from Pembroke Pines Charter High School (PPCH) has been named the Global Winner in the 5th Annual “Made to Move™ Communities™ Challenge” presented by Otis. This annual STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) competition had more than 250 students from 28 schools located in the company’s four regions – Americas, Asia Pacific, China and EMEA (Europe, Middle East & Africa) propose ways for Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve urban mobility. Each year, the challenge focuses on a different theme that aligns with global priorities.

Students in the competition share how their solution to a challenge can be scaled globally and then presented to a judging panel of Otis senior executives. The PPCH students created and presented a smartphone application that uses AI to aid individuals with visual impairments by providing the ability to navigate surroundings using musical notes as feedback. The App is called IRIS and uses LiDAR technology, as well as a type of AI called spatial computing.

Throughout the year, the PPCH students worked with engineers and conducted research with organizations such as the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind, to create this innovative application. They published their code on Github so they can continue to

work collaboratively with other software developers and improve their IRIS app with additional features. Their ultimate goal is that IRIS will be an all-encompassing App that can truly help others with many different disabilities from all around the world.

The winning Robotics and Engineering Student Team consists of Emiliano Salgado (senior); Mia Fu (senior); Max Wyborny (senior); Chinedu Okpala (senior); Reuben Sherry (senior); Matthew Saintilus (senior); Steve Jacob (junior); Umer Qureshi (sophomore); and Caitlin Estevez (freshman).

This award earned the school’s Robotics program $35,000, which will be used to purchase new robots for their fast-growing robotics teams, tools, 3D printers and drone equipment needed to start competing in the “Drones in Schools” racing competition.

Otis, headquartered in Connecticut, is a global leader in the manufacturing, installation and servicing of elevators and escalators with the industry’s largest service portfolio of over 2.4 million units. The “Made to Move™ Communities™ Challenge” was launched in 2020 to develop innovative solutions with the potential to create more connected communities and improve mobility for all. For more information regarding the challenge, visit www.otis.com/mtmc. PPCH is located at 17189 Sheridan Street, Pembroke Pines 33331. (954) 538-3700.
