www.sportsandactivities.com

Dear Readers,

Please help me celebrate my third year of being the Publisher of the Pembroke Pines Sports & Activities Directory. It seems like it was just yesterday when I answered an ad in the magazine for a sales rep. I remember my first client was the company that was putting blinds in my house. It’s hard to believe that was in 2007. Then my first issue as Publisher was November 2022-January 2023. I am truly blessed because I love what I do, I love being in the community, being at all the events where I can capture all the photos that go in the magazine.

Here is a cute story to share. One day I was at an event, and I passed by a little girl and her mom. I hear the girl exclaim “mom, mom that lady is a celebrity!” I stopped and said hi, and the girl told me she saw me in the magazine. I explained to her that I was the publisher, and I had to put my picture in the magazine. She was all excited, so I took her picture, and she was on the front cover of the next issue. The next time I saw them, they were both over the moon. It’s all about the little things we can do to make someone’s day.

As November 11th approaches, let’s not forget all our Veterans. It’s one day a year that we honor them. I always remember when I took care of my Uncle Frank, who was a WWII Veteran and proudly wore his WWII hat. There was not a day that went by that someone would not come over to him to say Thank You for your service. And that made him feel very proud. The city always puts on a beautiful Veterans Day celebration. If you can I highly recommend you bring your family out to celebrate. If you know of a WWII, Korean or Vietnam War Veteran a great way to say Thank You and honor them is to give them the gift of Honor Flight South Florida. You can read all about them on page 9.

As the holiday season approaches, I would like to wish you and your family a Happy Holiday! No matter how you celebrate, take the time to be with loved ones, enjoy one another and make new memories. May 2026 be a Happy, Healthy, Safe and Prosperous year for all of us.

All my best to you,

Dear Friends:

While it has been a relatively quiet hurricane season so far, it’s important to remember that hurricane season does not officially end until November 30th. We urge all residents to stay vigilant and always be prepared, both for the remainder of this season and looking ahead to next year. Please visit www. ppines.com/hurricane under Pembroke Pines Prepared for helpful resources including checklists, preparedness videos, and important information on what to do before, during, and after a storm.

In the event of a hurricane or tropical storm, a special updates section will be activated at www.ppines.com/hurricaneupdates. This page will provide real-time updates on city operations, closures, alerts, and other critical information.

The City’s Emergency Hotline is (954) 565-9571 and will be activated only when the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) reaches a Level 2 – Partial Activation or Level 1 – Full Activation. Once activated, this number can be used to ask questions or report storm-related concerns such as shelter information, road closures, and evacuation notices. We also encourage residents to follow the City of Pembroke Pines on Facebook, Instagram, and Next-Door, and to stay tuned to local news and radio stations for the most current updates. Let’s continue to stay prepared, informed, and safe. Let’s finish out the season strong and please know your city is prepared come what may.

I am pleased to share that the City of Pembroke Pines’ Fiscal Year 2025-2026 Budget, which began October 1st, has officially been approved, and it includes a small reduction in the millage rate of 0.0346 mills (or $0.0346 per $1,000 taxable value). It is now the 10th consecutive year that the rate has been reduced. This responsible financial decision reflects the City’s ongoing commitment to maintaining high-quality services while being mindful of inflation costs that we all have experienced and the impact on our residents. We remain focused on thoughtful budgeting that supports public safety, infrastructure, and community programs, all while ensuring long-term financial stability. Additional information on the City’s budget can be found at https://www.ppines.com/223/Budget, and residents can also email questions to budget@ppines.com.

Mark your calendars for several exciting upcoming events in Pembroke Pines! Kick off the fun at the Par Tee at Night on November 14th from 6:30PM-9:30PM. This is a free adult event featuring food trucks, adult beverages, mini golf, and contests. Join us on November 11th at noon for the Veteran’s Day Ceremony at Veterans Park (Charles F. Dodge City Center) to honor those who have served, with free refreshments to follow. Don’t miss the new Beats and Bites concert series, bringing throwback hits and great food to the plaza one Thursday each month—next dates are: November 20th, December 18th, and January 15th, 7:00PM9:00PM. And save the date for SnowFest on December 6th, from 4:00PM-8:00PM, where residents can enjoy snow, rides, games, and holiday fun at the City Center. Visit www.ppines.com/specialevents or call (954) 392-2116 for details.

I would like to wish you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving and as always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at (954) 450-1020, or by email at acastillo@ppines.com.

Very Sincerely Yours,

My first experience with Honor Flight was back in 2015. One day my husband came home and said he was taking Uncle Frank, a WWII Veteran, on the adventure of a lifetime. I had no idea what Honor Flight was, and after a brief explanation I could never have expected how profound and meaningful an experience it would be for my uncle, and our whole family.

So, what is Honor Flight? They are a non-profit, volunteer organization that is dedicated to taking veterans to Washington D.C. to visit their war memorials for FREE. It’s a way to pay tribute to them for all the sacrifices they have made for their country. All veterans are accompanied by a volunteer who is called a Guardian. The Guardian can be a family member or a stranger looking to do a kindness for a service member. For those meeting their veteran for the first time, there are meetings before the flight so you can get to know them before you spend the day in the capital with them.

The Honor Flight is a whirlwind affair. First, all the veterans and guardians get an early start aboard a privately chartered plane to DC. They are given breakfast, greeted by family members, pilots and airport staff. Even though my uncle was in his late 80’s at the time I felt very comfortable with him traveling. In addition to the guardian (who was in this case my husband), each flight has a list of all relevant medications as well as a doctor and nurse aboard.

When they get to the capital, they visit the national mall and see all memorials that were built in their honor; World War II, Korean and Vietnam. They also stop at Arlington National Cemetery for a special viewing of the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. You’d be surprised how many veterans have never seen the monuments built in their and their comrade’s honor, and it is a deeply moving experience for many of them. On the way home there is a mail call for the group. Every veteran goes

home with an envelope filled with cards and letters from family members, strangers, both kids and adults. I think this was perhaps the most special part of my uncle’s experience. The next day when I was reading him all his letters, he was overcome with emotion and asked to be buried with them.

The return home is truly a sight to behold. As the plane taxis to the gate, a ceremonial water arch is sprayed over it by firetrucks as a ceremonial salute to honor the veterans. I was totally unprepared for the amazing welcome home that Honor Flight had planned. There must have been 1000 people at the airport waiting for the plane to arrive. Everyone was wearing red, white & blue, holding flags and signs to welcome our veteran’s home. When I saw the faces of those service members, full of surprise and in tears, I was moved. They are just overwhelmed with all the love and gratitude, which many of them had never received coming home from their tour of duty. Uncle Frank told me that when he returned from overseas, he took the train home and that was it. No fanfare, no congratulations. He told me that taking that flight was one of the best days of his life.

I cannot express to you what an event this is, you really must experience it yourself. They do this every few months, and I always list it in our Events Section of the magazine. Please check it out with your family, you will thank me.

After that day, I was hooked on Honor Flight. I met Ryan Paton who is one of the original Founders and serves as the Director of Operations and we became friends. He would have me take Uncle Frank to various events; my uncle felt like a celebrity.

To get a veteran on Honor Flight or be a guardian just go to www.HonorFlightSouthFlorida.org and fill out an application. In 2015 they were only flying WWII Veterans, now they also fly Korean and Vietnam Veterans.

Student engagement is central to Pasadena Lakes Elementary’s mission, and one-way students are stretching their minds beyond the classroom is through the Debate Club. This program helps children discover new talents while sharpening critical skills such as research, collaboration, and public speaking—tools that will serve them throughout life.

The club is led by fifth grade reading and science teacher Ms. Avila, now in her second year as coach. A proud graduate of Broward County Public Schools and Florida Atlantic University, she embraced the challenge despite never debating herself. “I saw it as a powerful way to strengthen students’ reading, writing, and critical-thinking skills while broadening their horizons,” she says.

This year, the club has grown to 21 students in grades 3–5, most of them fourth graders. They meet every Thursday after school to prepare for competitions in categories such as Oratory, Interpretation, Congressional Debate, and Public Forum. At their September tournament, one student placed third in Dramatic Interpretation, and another placed third in Congressional Debate—early wins for a young and enthusiastic team.

The growth Ms. Avila has witnessed in her students goes far beyond awards. “The transformation is remarkable,” she shares. “Students learn to research, craft arguments, and speak with confidence. Watching a once-shy student stand tall and deliver a well-reasoned argument is inspiring.”

One student’s journey stands out. A soft-spoken young girl who barely whispered at the first meeting blossomed through practice and competition. By the end of the season, she had advanced to the county championship, placing sixth in Congressional Debate. More importantly, her confidence carried into the classroom and beyond. She became more outgoing, eager to participate in

discussions, and willing to take on leadership roles.

Debate also reinforces academic learning. Students analyze real-world issues, from artificial intelligence to congressional bills, practicing evidence-based reasoning and advanced vocabulary. These skills strengthen reading, writing, and social studies instruction while preparing students for middle and high school debate programs, scholarships, and future careers.

Looking ahead, Ms. Avila hopes to expand opportunities even further, including partnerships with local middle schools for mentorship and with community supporters for resources and field trips. Membership has already tripled since last year, and with growing enthusiasm, the future of debate at Pasadena Lakes is bright.

As part of Pasadena Lakes Elementary’s School Improvement Plan, programs like the Debate Club exemplify how enrichment builds both academic success and character. By engaging in spirited debates and meaningful collaboration, students are not only learning to win arguments—they are learning to use their voices with confidence, curiosity, and purpose.

GREENTREE PREP CHARTER (GTP), has been recognized by the dept of Broward County Charter Schools as a hidden gem in the west Broward area. The public charter school serves students in all nearby communities and teaches in a gifted learning environment. The school celebrated 12 years and has received accolades in the state since its first year. It has been recognized as the Best Charter school in the community for three years in a row.

“The school’s commitment to excellence in academics and our teachers’ desire to teach BEYOND the STANDARDS, are our greatest assets.” says E. Gonzalez, the school’s founder and Director.

The school has been an A school for 11 years and was recognized in the Top 10% category of high performing schools out of 3,265 schools in the State of Florida. Last year the school ranked TOP 4 in grades K-2 in Broward County in Language Arts and had extremely high marks in Civics and Algebra for 7th and 8th grade students. The goal of the school is to teach students beyond the grade level academic standards, while building strong values and character traits.

The school is a K-8 public charter school and has a 100% passing rate in statewide assessments, with the majority of the students scoring above the state and national average scores in mathematics and language arts. Students graduating from 8th grade and entering high school, have ranked top of their class in Math and Language

Arts in their respective high schools. Parents attribute this success to the academic foundation they received at Greentree Prep Charter School.

If your child is gifted or is a high performing student in their school and is not getting what you feel they need to succeed further, then - Greentree Prep Charter is the school for your child. With an enrollment of no more than 350 students, every student is a valued member of the school’s community.

The program was created to help students achieve more than the standards in academics. Each child is encouraged to reach their highest potential. The Director of the school states: “We believe that every student is gifted and if given the proper tools and guidance, the student will gain confidence and set higher individual goals. All students attending GTP, will receive the benefit of learning in this type of environment.”

Greentree Prep Charter is located on a 5-acre campus in Southwest Ranches on Dykes Road. The school has a swimming pool, soccer field, basketball and volleyball court, and more. Register your child at GTP, a free public school of choice, with high academic standards for students who want to learn in a gifted environment.

In its first year as Pines Collegiate Academy (PCA) 6-12, formerly Pines Middle School, the institution is giving students a two-year head start on their college careers. While many schools offer dual enrollment, PCA provides a unique pathway for students to earn both a Cambridge diploma and an Associate in Arts (AA) degree upon high school graduation. This is a true game-changer for local students and their families.

The Cambridge diploma, an internationally recognized credential, provides automatic qualification for the Bright Futures scholarship without the need for concordant test scores. This removes a major barrier and simplifies the path to a fully funded college education. In addition, students can earn their AA degree for free through a partnership with Broward College, eliminating tuition and textbook costs. By graduating high school with an associate’s degree, students can enter a four-year university as a junior, saving two years of tuition and accelerating their journey toward a bachelor’s degree. PCA is setting a new standard for what a public school can achieve, empowering its students with a substantial academic and financial advantage.

Beyond the Classroom: Real-World Experiences and Community Partnerships: Pines Collegiate Academy is about more than just academic rigor. The school is committed to providing hands-on, real-world experiences that bring learning to life. This was on full display in Mr. Yuen’s aeronautics class, where students recently took flight on a field trip to the South Florida Air Expo at Opa-Locka Executive Airport. They got an up-close look at incredible aircraft and the intricate science of flight, connecting their classroom lessons to real-world applications.

Technology and innovation are also at the core of the PCA curriculum. In another one of Mr. Yuen’s classes, students learned to code their VEX IQ BaseBots. After mastering the autonomous functions, they coded their controllers and faced off in a thrilling robot soccer match, showcasing their problem-solving and programming skills in a fun, competitive environment.

The school’s vibrant community extends beyond its walls through impactful partnerships. PCA is especially proud of its collaboration with the Florida Panthers.

The NHL team recently made another incredibly generous donation to the school’s food pantry, an essential resource that serves students and families in need. This effort is spearheaded by the school’s dedicated social worker, Ms. Melanie, who works tirelessly to ensure the well-being of the school and wider community.

Celebrating Excellence: Honoring Staff and Fostering a Supportive Environment: The success of Pines Collegiate Academy is a testament to its dedicated and passionate staff. The school recently celebrated two standout members of its team: Ms. McCoy, the Teacher of the Year, and Mr s. Gillis, the Employee of the Year. Their hard work, dedication, and unwavering commitment make a profound difference every single day, fostering a supportive environment where both students and staff can thrive.

This commitment was recently recognized in a huge way. In a surprise partnership with the Broward Education Foundation, Office Depot hosted an exclusive shopping event for teachers at their Pines Boulevard location. The foundation and Office Depot each contributed $10,000 for a total of $20,000 in school supplies.

Eighth-grade math teacher Jasmine McCoy, who was also named the school’s Teacher of the Year, shared her excitement, grabbing essentials like highlighters and mechanical pencils, as well as motivational items like candy and chips for her students. “We do put a lot of, not only effort, but money into our students to make sure we get them to the next level,” she said.

PCA Principal Shawn Aycock expressed his gratitude for the event, highlighting the impact it has on teachers who often spend their own money on classroom supplies. “This is a huge help,” he said. “Thank you to Broward Education Foundation and Office Depot for making my teachers feel so special.”

By blending a rigorous academic model with dynamic, hands-on learning and strong community ties, Pines Collegiate Academy is truly redefining what a public school can be. It’s a place where students are not just learning for a test but preparing for a lifetime of success. Located at 200 Douglas Road, Pembroke Pines 33024. (754) 323-4000.
