SPORTS & ACTIVITIES DIRECTORY (954) 803-2140 Office 1118 SW 7th Street

Boca Raton, FL 33486 www.sportsandactivities.com

Dear Readers,

Welcome Back! I hope that everyone enjoyed a fun-filled summer and was able to spend quality time with family and friends and recharge before the start of the school year.

This issue focuses on Back to School and Fall/Winter programs, sports, and special events, as well as just about everything you need to know to get out and about. Some of our very favorite activities and events are during the fall and we could not be more excited! Be sure to check out our detailed event calendar for all the happenings.

Maybe your child has discovered a new interest or developed a talent or love for a new sport they experienced over the summer. It’s a new season for sports registrations, enrichment programs and extracurricular activities and they can all be found in the red-tabbed pages that lie ahead in our Main Directory. Please encourage your children to look through the magazine and choose one extracurricular activity or more that might interest them. This will help your child find a good balance between studying, activities and sports. These skills can help teach your child time management and leadership skills, as well as how to establish goals and develop a good work ethic.

Looking to volunteer? Become a Broward County Public Schools volunteer and make an impact on the lives of so many children. We encourage all parents to join their school’s PTA or PTO. These organizations are more important than ever and give parents the opportunity to remain involved with their children, know what is going on at their schools, and have your voice heard.

Many families have made this area home because they understand that Coral Springs and Parkland have some of the best schools in the state of Florida. Our schools offer not only innovative academic programs such as robotics, debate and business classes, but competitive arts and performing opportunities as well. Please read the school articles to see all the wonderful programs, competitions and community service projects our schools and students are involved in. We have some of the most dedicated teachers, staff and principals around and we are grateful for all of their hard work.

Our publication is all about our cities and the people who live in them. We want to hear about your children’s awards and achievements. We would love to receive pictures of their athletic and artistic endeavors. Send them to cspdirectory1@gmail.com.

My best to you,

Dear Parkland Residents,

It’s about that time, when we start winding up for the rhythm of a new school year. But, before you brace yourselves for the early morning bus routes, speedy breakfasts, and carlines, think about the simple things that brought you joy over the summer, and incorporate a few of them into your new back-to-school routine.

If you picked up a new workout routine, keep it – find another pocket of time to do what you need to stay healthy and fit. And, if you started a book – whether you read it or listened to it – finish it. You deserve to find out what happens.

Once you get back to school, even the weekends will be packed with rehearsals, practices, and social events. But right now, you are at an advantage. Before the routine truly shifts, you still know what it feels like to indulge – and indulging has its place.

Think about how this can help your kids, too. It is easy to model being too busy, stressed out, and overbooked. Teaching kids how to relax, however, is at times a little more difficult. One way is to start off the year by telling your kids, “Just be who you really are.” They don’t always ask us for advice about their social lives, but if they hear it from you, it might resonate with them, even if they do not respond right away.

Speaking of social lives, image and comfort level are a big deal for schoolage kids. And as we get closer to the start of school, consider helping your child and other family members adopt a mindset that will help to ease the stress and discomfort kids may feel around this time.

A few tips?

• Get in touch with a friend before school starts, so that you have a point of connection.

• Eat a healthier diet.

• Start going to sleep at a time that allows you to be well-rested for the school day.

• Establish a study space at home.

• If you aren’t using an alarm to wake up, consider using one now.

Whether you are reading this before or after school starts, you have time to change your mindset and learn to retain what keeps you afloat and balanced. If something is working for you and your family now, don’t let it fall by the wayside just because school is back in session. Use your summer playbook to enhance your fall game.

Dear Citizens and Friends,

I hope you and your families had a great summer! Its time for school and many City activities! If you have a teenager, they may want to get involved with our Teen Political Forum, that is spearheaded by Commissioner Joshua Simmons. For more information, please email Luwam Ghermay at Lghermay@coralsprings.gov. I also help run a Leadership Program since 2003 with high school students. If you are interested in your child being a part of it or attending as a mentor, please text or call me at 954-494-9872.

I am the Lead for the Parent Advisory Committee. I want to take a moment to thank our current members for their time and dedication. I also want to thank past participants. It is a great way for parent leaders in our community to work with the City to lift education in our community across the board. Thank you April Wyche for your commitment to excellence! If you don’t know, I host Mayors for the Day on a monthly basis. If you would like your son or daughter to meet me and learn more abut local government, please reach out to our Commission Liaison Luwam Ghermay. I am very excited about the great success of so many of our schools. It is not just about increased ratings, but also the value of education being placed at each of our institutions. I meet so many teachers, parents, students and administrators that are very dedicated to our children. Keep up the good work all!

People often ask me: “What is your favorite aspect of your job?” For me, it’s the kids. Any opportunity I have to address our kids, let them know how important they are and teach them a little about government, I love. IF you are a teacher or parent or administrator, I would love to visit your school and address the children. You can email me at Sbrook@ coralsprings.gov.

I also want to thank the amazing SRO’s for their commitment to our kids and to the safety of our schools. Lastly, please look at our website, www.coralsprings. gov to learn about all of the events we have coming up for you and your families!

Warmly,

AUGUST

For most people, their home isn’t just where they live—it’s one of the biggest investments they’ll ever make. That’s why it’s smart to think carefully before spending big money on upgrades or renovations. Some projects can add real value and make your home more appealing when it’s time to sell. Others might cost a lot and offer very little return.

Of course, not every project needs to be profitable. Some changes are purely about comfort or enjoyment—and that’s okay. However, to make the most of your dollars, it helps to know which upgrades are likely to pay off, and which ones might not.

Here are some of the worst and best home improvement “investments,” based on research and real-world data.

THE WORST BANG-FOR-YOUR-BUCK PROJECTS

1. Sunrooms: They can be peaceful and bright, but they’re also expensive to build— and not everyone wants one. Most homeowners recoup only 45–50% of what they spend.

2. Swimming Pools: A pool might be fun for your family, but it’s a tough sell to buyers—especially in cooler climates. With high installation and upkeep costs, pools usually return less than 25% of their value.

3. Bathroom Additions: Adding a bathroom sounds like a good idea, but the plumbing and electrical work adds up fast. These projects often recover only 50–60%, and even less if the layout feels forced.

4. Garage Conversions: Turning your garage into a bedroom or living space might suit your needs—but many buyers still want the garage for parking or storage. You’ll likely see only a 60% return.

5. Home Theaters: Custom theaters appeal to a small group of buyers. Most people would rather use the space differently. ROI is typically around 25–35%.

THE BEST UPGRADES FOR RESALE VALUE

1. Exterior Fixes: First impressions matter. Replacing your garage door, adding new siding, or upgrading your front door can boost curb appeal and resale value. A new garage door can return up to 100% or more of what you spend.

2. New Windows: Replacing old windows improves comfort, energy savings, and looks. Depending on your location, this can return 70–85% of the cost.

3. Small Kitchen Updates: You don’t need a full remodel. New countertops, cabinet hardware, lighting, or paint can freshen things up for less—and typically bring 75–90% ROI, especially with a clean, modern design.

4. Bathroom Refreshes: Simple changes—like new fixtures, mirrors, lighting, or a fresh vanity—can make a big difference. Most updates return 60–80%, especially if they help the space feel cleaner and more modern.

5. HVAC and Insulation: Not glamorous, but definitely valuable. Replacing an old AC or furnace or adding insulation can return 70–80%, while also lowering your energy bills.

Keep It Simple—and Smart: The best upgrades are usually the ones that are practical, affordable, and easy to maintain. Fancy, custom projects might be fun in the short term, but they often don’t appeal to most buyers.

If you plan to live in your home for many years, feel free to make it yours. But if a move is on the horizon, focus on updates that add value, save money, and appeal to a wide range of buyers.

Final Thought: Your home is more than just a place to live—it’s a major piece of your financial puzzle. Like any investment, it’s worth being thoughtful about where your money goes. A few smart decisions now can help you enjoy your space today and put you in a stronger position tomorrow.

...Be well and invest wisely!

Eachyear, our National Night Out at Pine Trails Park grows into something even more exciting, and for me personally, it continues to be one of the most meaningful nights of the year.

This year’s event took place on Monday, August 4th, at Pine Trails Park, and what an incredible night it was.

As your Police Chief, one of the things I value most is the opportunity to build lasting relationships with residents, especially with our children and teens. That’s what makes this event one of my favorites. Watching young people light up as they hopped on an airboat, climbed into a SWAT truck, petted a K-9, or tried on police gear was something truly special. These moments went beyond fun, they helped us foster trust and connection with the next generation.

We were incredibly fortunate to have the support of so many dedicated local, state, and federal partners, including the FBI, DEA, ATF, U.S. Secret Service, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, U.S. Coast Guard, and Florida Highway Patrol. Thanks to them, and many more, this year’s event was the biggest and best yet.

From hands-on displays and unforgettable photo ops to meaningful time with family, all the fun happened right here in Parkland. And our amazing School Resource Deputies and school staff were right there alongside us, greeting students and families with smiles and high-fives.

Whether you joined us this year or plan to in the future, thank you for making Parkland such a welcoming, engaged, and inspiring community. It’s truly an honor to serve you.

As a child psychologist, I have spent my career supporting children and families as they navigate the world through the lens of neurodiversity, disability and struggles in school and life. Society has made enormous progress by focusing on maximizing strengths and encouraging children with disabilities to develop skills in ways that build confidence and connection. While this strength-based approach has many benefits, it often unintentionally reinforces the idea that disability must be "overcome" or “worked around.” It may be beneficial to shift this perspective. Instead of viewing disability as something to bypass or merely accommodate, we need to purposefully identify, accept, and embrace it as a natural and valid part of the human experience.

Too often, accommodations in schools are provided after a child has been formally diagnosed (typically an educational evaluation with a licensed psychologist). This puts families in the uncomfortable position of presenting their child’s differences as deficits in order to secure the help they need. It needs to be pointed out that this is the correct process and is necessary in our current educational system.

Accepting and embracing disability begins with language. Children learn early whether they are being “fixed” or being valued. When we (adults) speak openly and respectfully about differences, without negativity, fear, or the need to “spin / reframe” them into strengths, children will internalize that their experiences are valid.

Acceptance does not mean ignoring challenges. It means acknowledging the full range of a child’s needs while affirming their identity.

It also means including children in their own developmental journey. When a child

understands their brain works differently, it can be liberating, if the message is delivered with care and understanding. Rather than simply informing a child they have ADHD, autism, or a learning disability, we should be teaching them how their minds work and helping them advocate for themselves with dignity. This fosters resilience and builds trust in the therapeutic relationship, at home and in school. It also begins to give the child some of the answers that they might otherwise spend a lifetime searching for.

Embracing disability also demands that parents and schools stop waiting for children to fail before intervening. Most children would benefit from support long before testing confirms a diagnosis. Proactively identifying needs(this is not a label) to uplift, ensures we are building inclusive environments instead of reactive ones.

Ultimately, a fundamental shift in how we understand disability must happen both culturally and systemically. Disability is not a problem to be fixed or hidden; it is a part of the human experience. As professionals, parents, and peers, our job is not to erase difference but to create space where difference is accepted and empowered

When we stop treating disability as the price of entry for support and start treating all children as worthy of compassionate understanding, we will simultaneously help individual children flourish and begin to create a more inclusive world for everyone. Weare thrilled to welcome our Heron Heights families back for another incredible school year! After a relaxing and exciting summer break, we are ready to open our doors and once again fill our halls with learning, love, and laughter.

We are proud to announce that Heron Heights has once again earned an “A” school rating, a testament to the dedication of our students, staff, and families. Even more exciting, we crushed our science goal last year— surpassing our target of a 4% increase and soaring with an outstanding 15% gain in science scores! We are so proud of the work we can do when we put our minds to it and work as a team!

We are also excited to welcome our new Assistant Principal, Mrs. Luciana Gentile, to the Heron Heights leadership team. She brings experience, enthusiasm, and

a passion for student success, and we are confident she will be a wonderful addition to our school family.

This year, we continue our transformational journey with The Leader in Me, a whole-school framework based on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Through this initiative, students are empowered to discover their unique strengths, develop leadership and life skills, and create a culture of responsibility, collaboration, and goal-setting. Every child at Heron Heights is seen as a leader, and we are committed to helping each one grow academically, socially, and emotionally.

With our theme of “One Team, One Goal,” we are ready to make this year one of purpose, progress, and pride. Here’s to another amazing year at Heron Heights Elementary!

It is with gratitude that I introduce myself as the new principal of Park Trails Elementary School. I am beyond honored to join such a wonderful school community filled with amazing families and a dedicated staff. As I step into this role, I will continue to create a warm, welcoming, and safe learning environment where every student can be challenged, flourish and celebrated as we grow together as a community.

I have been working closely with Ms. Manville and the team at Park Trails to support a smooth leadership transition. As Ms. Manville starts a new chapter in her professional journey, I’m grateful for her support and dedication to PTE and am proud to carry that legacy forward. I am also excited to introduce our new Assistant Principal, Mr. Peter Policastro, who joins us from Pinewood Elementary. He brings experience, positivity,

Park Trails Elementary is looking to kick off an amazing 2025-2026 school year with our theme “Together We Lead, Together We Succeed”

Our staff will be introduced to a new program, “The Leader in Me”, which will eventually be incorporated school-wide! We are looking forward to taking our first steps with this wonderful new initiative. Important upcoming dates to mark your calendars:

warmth, and a strong commitment to student achievement that will support our students, staff, and community. Mr. Policastro is familiar with the Park Trails community and will work with to continue to provide an environment of high-quality instruction.

As we prep for the new school year, I look forward to making connections, getting to know you, and learning more about the people, traditions, and values that make Park Trails Elementary the phenomenal place it is. Continuing to build strong relationships between PTE and home are essential to student success and I am committed to creating and maintaining these connections with each of you. Thank you for welcoming me into the Park Trails Elementary family. I am thrilled to see all the great things we will accomplish together in the years ahead!

Ihope everyone enjoyed a restful and refreshing summer and is looking forward to an exciting new school year. As the Education Relationship Manager for the City of Coral Springs, my role is to serve as a bridge between our residents, city leadership, and Broward County Public Schools. Together, we work to enhance the educational experience for all students in Coral Springs.

A key part of my role is maintaining strong, collaborative relationships with school principals and parent education groups. Through active listening and engagement with parents, teachers, administrators, and community stakeholders, I work to identify the educational priorities that matter most to our community. With more than a decade of experience as a teacher, school counselor, ESE specialist, and assistant principal, I understand firsthand the importance of strong city-school partnerships.

I’m proud to share some of the progress we’ve made highlight upcoming initiatives that further our mission.

SAT Prep Program Launches This Fall: To support college readiness for our high school students, the city has launched a subsidized SAT preparation program. Beginning September 6, students can participate in a four-hour workshop led by a local test prep expert. Lunch is included, and the total cost is just $20. This initiative is part of our commitment to expanding educational resources and opportunities for Coral Springs teens. To view available dates and register, visit coralsprings.gov/SATPrep Parent and Principal Education Groups: We continue to host our bi-monthly Parent and Principal Education Group meetings, which bring together school principals, PTA leaders, and city officials. These sessions create a space for open dialogue and information-sharing between those working directly in our schools and those shaping municipal policy. Looking ahead, we aim to further enhance these meetings by incorporating impactful presentations and more structured,

solution-focused discussions.

Welcoming New School Leaders: We’re excited to welcome two new principals to the Coral Springs education community this school year:

• Carla Hart, James S. Hunt Elementary

• Arlene Manville, Parkside Elementary

Their leadership and experience will undoubtedly contribute to the continued success of our schools and students.

The Coral Springs Village Volunteer Program Continues: The Coral Springs Village initiative will continue this year, bringing city employees into classrooms to support students and teachers. Last school year, 85 city employees from various departments volunteered more than 150 hours and made generous donations to help fund supplies and projects. Volunteers supported students through reading, small group academic assistance, mentorship, field trips, classroom projects, and math and literacy support. Each department was paired with a classroom, providing consistent engagement.

This partnership has had a measurable impact. Coral Springs Elementary saw a 7-point increase in academic performance, raising its school grade from a C to a B. This is a true testament to what’s possible when a community comes together to support education.

Looking Ahead: I’m proud to represent the Coral Springs community and even more proud of the progress we’ve made together. Moving forward, my goal is to continue creating opportunities that connect students, educators, and the broader community in meaningful ways. I remain committed to fostering growth, collaboration, and innovation that benefit our schools and support student success.

I look forward to keeping you informed of future programs and initiatives as we move through the school year. April Wyche, Educator Officer can be reached at awyche@coralsprings.gov.

At Sagemont Preparatory School, our students are empowered to engage, question, and collaborate. This year, we are proud to launch a schoolwide expansion of Harkness Discussions across all classrooms and subject areas, from preschool through 12th grade.

Harkness Discussions are a student-driven learning approach centered around a table, where each student’s voice matters. In these discussions, students actively listen, ask thoughtful questions, make connections, and build on one another’s ideas. Guided by a Sagemont Prep faculty member as a facilitator rather than a lecturer, the Harkness method cultivates critical thinking, respectful dialogue, and intellectual curiosity.

Imagine sitting in a boardroom collaborating, finding common ground, and opening one’s mind to new ideas rooted in research. With this picture in mind, it is easy to visualize why the Harkness method is such a profound and exciting experience for our Sagemont Prep students. “Empowering,” “fun,“ “I get to lead,”

“My opinion matters,” and “It keeps me on my toes” are merely a few words our students use to describe the impact it has on their learning.

Over the past three years, Sagemont Prep’s Curriculum Specialists have trained our faculty at the high school level for classroom implementation of the Harkness model. This year marks an exciting next chapter as we continue to deepen our commitment to innovative, real-world learning by embedding this model from preschool through 12th grade.

Harkness is not just a discussion method; it is a mindset that nurtures intellectual curiosity, analytical thinking, collaboration, responsible risk-taking, reflection, confidence, and character.

As we welcome our Sagemont Prep Lions to campus for another incredible year, we are excited to continue our meaningful journey with students focused on real-world learning, application, thoughtful dialogue, and innovation.

Happy New School Year!

We hope everyone had a restful and rejuvenating summer. We are absolutely thrilled to welcome our students back—eager, enthusiastic, and ready to learn! We are elated to announce that we earned an “A” rating for the 2024-25 school year. Kudos to our amazing staff!

Our theme for the 2025-26 school year is “Believe, Achieve and Reach for the Stars”.

Parental involvement is essential to student success. We strongly encourage you to stay engaged by supporting your child’s education at home and participating in school

activities. Great ways to get involved include attending our monthly School Advisory Council (SAC) meetings, joining the PTO, and taking part in our exciting school events and family nights.
