Dear Readers, What’s so great about summer camp? From my experience, and from the many years of publishing a child-oriented directory geared to getting kids involved in sports, activities, clubs, camps and schools, summer camp is FUN! Summer camps encourage kids to make new friends, be creative, play outdoors, try new activities, and gain confidence without the pressure to be the best. Specialty camps can take a new interest and turn it into a life long passion. The more typical outdoor activities and travel camps bolster a healthy and active lifestyle while putting the camper in a variety of positive, team-oriented social situations. Whichever type of camp most appeals to your child, know that there are so many great friendships and memories that will be made. Anything more than that is icing on the cake! When my kids were the perfect camp age, we spent two summers on the road playing in and coaching a girl’s travel softball team. There were enormous costs involved, a lot of pressure put on the girls, and although some fun was had by all, it burned all of us out. We decided as a family that this was not something we wanted to pursue. The following summer, I put them in a tennis camp with an entirely new group of kids. Both of them thrived! They learned a sport without pressure in a positive environment. They made new friends, some of which they still keep in touch with. But most importantly, they had FUN. Ahhh…those were the days. My kids are now 23 and 20 and, as of February, I am officially an empty nester. I look back and realize how important those easy, breezy, fun summer camps were and how they helped them grow into more confident, well-adjusted, happy adults. For the younger kids, summer should be the time to step away from the homework, testing, cramming, all-star, travel, over scheduled, over worked and exhausted keep up with the Jones’ mentality. Just let them have FUN and enjoy seeing the smiles on their faces. With that being said, we have a vast array of camp choices for you that include acting in a musical, traveling to water parks, sleep-away camps, horseback riding, robotics building, language immersion, gymnastics, sports and swimming to name a few. Take a few minutes to go through the Summer Camp directory with your kids. Find out what they really want to do. I bet they will say, “I just want to have FUN!” As a reminder, this directory is made possible by our advertisers. Please remember to let them know you saw them in the pages of the Sports & Activities Directory! A special Happy Mother’s Day and Father’s Day to all of you parents out there! I can tell you first hand that childhood goes by all too quickly, so make the most of the time you have with your children. Put the phone down, turn the computer, TV and video games off, eat dinner together and talk. You will learn a lot about your kids! My best to you, Margot

issues of positive and negative peer pressure. Some upcoming shows include “James and The Giant Peach, Jr.,” on May 22 at the Sunrise Civic Center, and “Cabaret,” on May 15 at Nova Southeastern University’s Blackbox Theatre. Inside Out has been offering classes in Weston for the past 18 years. There is currently a Playworks class for 7-11 year olds, a Musical Theatre Production Class for 11-15 year olds and an Advanced Performance Ensemble Class for 15 & up. All of the classes culminate with a performance in a theatre venue in Broward County. The theatre company recently started offering classes in Pembroke Pines, including a Broadway Jazz Dance class through May 18. In fall 2016, it will also offer a Musical Theatre Production class for students 8-13. On April 13, students will perform in a showcase at the SWFP Community Center, which will include a variety of musical song and dance numbers from past and present shows. This summer, at the Sagemont Upper School, it will be offering a Performing Arts Summer Conservatory (June 13-July 1) for 9-14 year olds and a Summer Intensive (July 18- August 5) for ages 13 & up. Since Inside Out does not have its own physical space, it partners with schools, organizations and cities to provide programming throughout South Florida. This often allows them to reach those who typically would not have access to its programming. Some of the most recent ones include: Memorial Health Care System, Florida Initiative for Suicide Prevention, The School of Rock of West Broward, Miami-Drug Free Coalition, Hispanic Unity of Florida’s Unity4Teens, and Museum of Art. “We have been fortunate and honored to work with so many great organizations and schools,” said Braun. “The theatre’s ability to strengthen communities is peerless, as the work bridges cultural and social divides and creates intimate bonds among its participants.” The Inside Out Theatre Company is a 501(3), not-for-profit organization. he Inside Out Theatre company has created and produced 55 original works and six adaptations, performing over 450 shows for more than 40,000 audience members in South Florida. It tackles difficult issues in a non-threatening and entertaining way that leaves audiences thinking long after the curtain closes. “The theatre is a significant instrument to access important truths and insights about one’s self and the society in which one lives,” said Robin Braun, Executive Artistic Director. “It is a powerful tool for positive transformation. By creating and producing socially relevant theatre, we offer audiences the opportunity for continuous self-examination, awareness and inspiration, and our actors the ability to express their selves in a creative atmosphere that demands honesty, responsibility, respect and teamwork.” The theatre company has created and produced over 65 original works and performed over 450 shows for over 40,000 audience members in South Florida. Many of its students have gone on to pursue careers in acting and have attended Tisch School of the Arts, The Boston Conservatory, New World and more. All of the programming is designed to increase the traits that are associated with positive character - discipline, teamwork, respect, honesty, dependability, and compassion. Plays include themes on bullying and violence, resisting peer pressure, suicide prevention, substance abuse prevention, body image and self-esteem, honesty in the face of temptation and greed, overcoming hate and prejudice, conflict resolution, the meaning of success, and more. After the performances, audiences have an opportunity to talk about the critical issues. Initial programming focused on original works, such as “2020 Take Control,” which was about breaking free of stereotypes and restrictions, and being the master of one’s own destiny. Now it also includes well-known musicals that are aligned with the company’s mission, such as “The Who’s Tommy,” which explores issues of drug and sexual abuse, and obsession with fame, as well as “Grease,” which brings up

he Cypress Bay High School Varsity Boys Basketball team is used to leaving it all on the court. On Wednesday afternoons, however, they save some energy to mentor students at Gator Run Elementary as part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County program. “I am always looking for ways that the team can be in touch with the community,” said Jason Looky, head boys’ basketball coach at Cypress Bay. “Most of my players come from amazing homes. They are well taken care of and have most of the things they need. This program helps them appreciate what they have. It also gives them an opportunity to give back by serving as positive role models and influencing other young men.” Bigs Inspiring Scholastic Success (BISS) is a one-to-one mentoring program focused on school-based mentoring sessions. High school students are referred by principals, guidance counselors or specific teachers who recognize their ability to be role models. Once a week, high school mentors (Bigs) visit middle or elementary schools to meet in a group setting with their individual mentee (Little). Each mentor match focuses on academic, social and personal goals established by Big Brothers Big Sisters. The BISS program is currently in 17 schools in Broward County. “The BISS program focuses on improvement of academic achievement, classroom behavior and increased communication skills,” said Anne Gardiner, Vice President of Programs for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County, Inc. The program at Gator Run includes 12 male students in kindergarten to third grade. They meet with their mentors once a week after school. The first half

hour is dedicated to academics. The older kids help the younger kids with homework, review current classwork and/or projects. During the second half hour, they play individual or team games in a way that boosts team morale and works on communication and problem solving skills. Sometimes the kids even have an opportunity to play basketball together outside. With 50 adult mentors, Gator Run has one of largest mentoring programs in Broward County. This is the first time, however, that students have mentored at the school. “The program is a win-win,” said Rose Powers, Gator Run guidance counselor. “The Gator Run students have great role models to look up to and the Cypress Bay students feel good because they are making a difference. Every child can benefit from being mentored and getting individual attention for an hour.” Senor Michael North says that his mentee gets excited when he enters the room. “There is so much I wish I could have learned at a younger age that would have better prepared me for different situations,” said Michael. “I’m trying to teach them as much as I can, while letting them have fun during it. It’s good to know I’m making a difference in someone’s life.” Senior Brandon Caicedo also enjoys mentoring. “The kids always have smiles on their faces when we’re around,” said Brandon. “Some of them are really going through some hard times and need someone to talk to. I really feel like we’re making a huge impact and helping these kids.” For information on Big Brothers Big Sisters, visit www.bbbsbroward.org or call (954) 584-9990.

When your brain says, “I can’t!”, and your body says, “No more!” it’s

24

your heart that keeps you going. It’s your heart that knows no boundaries or limitations. When you, alone, set out to conquer a goal, you will often run into what seems to be insurmountable challenges. When you set out as a team to conquer a goal, no challenges seem insurmountable. Now put the heart of a team on the line and you will find boundaries pushed, limitations obliterated and goals exceeded. This is the essence of the Fort Lauderdale Triathletes, and more specifically, two of their 75+ members Jim and Michael Sayih, a father and son team, who together with an enormous support system, make the seemingly impossible...possible. Crossing the finish line of a duathlon at 5 years old may seem far fetched to most people. If the 5 year old was born with Cerebral Palsy, well, just about everyone would say it is impossible, but not Jim... and definitely not Michael. With a self-made rigged bike to include Michael and an upgraded “racing” wheelchair, Jim and Michael completed that duathlon. They didn’t know the definition of impossible then and they do not now, 18 years later after finishing countless more Duathlons, Triathlons, IRONMAN, Spartan Races & Battle Frog Races, just to name a few. Jim Sayih, a Police Lieutenant (Ret.) from the Miami Police Department, retired after serving 20 years to spend more time with his family, and specifically Michael to navigate the unfamiliar special needs world. He is co-author with Jack Canfield the Best Seller, Success Secret, the owner of 911 CrossFit in Cooper City, owner of an OrangeTheory franchise in Palm Beach Gardens, he was recently inducted into the Personal Trainer Hall of Fame, and he is a professor of Physical Science at Broward College. With this many balls in the air, one would imagine that he really has no time for much else. However, he participates in the Fort Lauderdale Triathletes as a member of the team, as well as a strength trainer for the membership. Jim believes in and encourages “positive” peer pressure. “Training rides, runs or swims by yourself isn’t conducive to pushing yourself. Our team of diverse members

push you to better your own times, to train harder and longer that you would on your own,” he said. “The majority of the members have already done IRONMAN Races, for example, and they share their wealth of knowledge with everyone in the club. I am a USAT Triathlon Certified Level 1 Coach with a Masters Degree in Exercise Physiology, who brings a wealth of strength training information to the membership. It is a friendly, supportive, warm culture,” he added. Jim is also the Founder and Chairperson on the Board of Directors for SpecialCompass.org, a non profit organization promoting independence for those with disabilities, including Affordable Housing, inclusion is Sports Activities such as 5K Runs, Obstacle Courses, and Triathlons, assistance in physical and medical needs, government benefits, and employment opportunities. Michael participates in the Board Meetings as well. Soon Jim and Michael, along with SpecialCompass.org will announce the building of a prototype of apartments that cater specifically to special needs including wheelchair accessible doorways, wider hallways, user friendly kitchens and bathrooms, and they will be built close to medical facilities, shopping centers, and everyday needs furthering the road to independent living. Jim and Michael rely on each other as well as their team to make it over, through or under some of the obstacles and challenges in races as well as in their lives. It is Jim who is the front man...the physical pusher, puller and climber, but according to anyone who knows them, Michael is the more competitive of the dynamic duo. “Whenever we get passed by a few people on a course, Michael will say to me, ‘Ok Dad, that’s enough, let’s get going!’” said Jim. And that is when they kick into to a new gear, often humbling other unencumbered participants along the way (in races and in life). To learn more about the Fort Lauderdale Triathletes, visit www.fltri.com or go to Facebook (Fort Lauderdale Triathletes). For more information on Jim & Michael Sayih go to www.SpecialCompass.org.

heerleading has evolved over the years. Today’s teams are comprised of some of the most talented athletes. Routines can be very challenging and include jumps, partner stunts, pyramids, tumbling and more. At Florida Triple Threat All-Stars, students learn to excel in all areas of cheerleading and dance. Coaches also make sure that the girls have fun, while learning life lessons and skills that will last a lifetime. Tryouts for the upcoming season will be held on May 14. “Florida Triple Threat All-Stars is a lot more than just competitive cheerleading,” said Amanda Davies, Coach, Trainer and Community Service Director. “We focus on the development of our students both inside and outside of the gym. In addition to developing their athleticism, we help them develop as a person and a teammate. We instill values and morals that our students can take with them long after their cheerleading careers, such as loyalty, discipline, hard work, confidence, and integrity.” Triple Threat’s program offers a wide range of levels from level 0 to level 5, which is the highest level in cheerleading. It offers tumbling classes and private lessons for every level. This season, there were seven competitive teams in levels 1, 2, 3, and 5 in the Mini, Youth, Junior, and Senior age divisions. All of the Triple Threat coaches are AACCA safety certified and USASF certified. Three of them are competition judges within the industry. “The coaches and staff are passionate about what they do,” said Davies. “This sport is their livelihood, so the success of the athletes, teams, and program as a whole is important to them.” Although competition season is only January through April, joining a competitive team requires a full year commitment from both the athletes and parents. Since cheerleading is a team sport, the whole team must be in attendance in order to structure routines and prepare for competitions. “We strongly believe that our success originates from the dedication and commitment of our athletes and parents,” said Davies. “Parents want their kids to be successful and so do we, but this requires dedication.

Students that succeed at Triple Threat are the ones willing to learn and take correction constructively, which is a huge part of being an athlete.” Teams travel to competitions on most weekends throughout the season and practice during the months prior. Most of the competitions are in Orlando; however, teams typically also attend three out-of-state competitions in places such as Dallas, Indianapolis, Atlanta, and Las Vegas. There are also non-traveling teams for those who are not able to travel. Since Triple Threat opened seven years ago, some of its accolades have included: two-time Jamfest Super National Champions, 2012 NCA National Champions, Summit Bid Winner, three-time World’s Bid Winner and 2014 Cheerleading World’s Finalist. At NCA Nationals this season, Small Senior Level 3 placed 3rd and Small Junior Level 2 placed 4th. Teams will be competing at the 2016 Summit and Worlds Championships. Many alumni have also enjoyed successful cheerleading careers at colleges and universities, such as FAMU, University of Central Florida, Southeastern University, and the University of Louisville. Florida Triple Threat also has a competitive team for special needs athletes of all ages. The program relies on athletes and coaches who volunteer their time to practice once a week and assist the special needs athlete in competitions. The special needs program relies solely on donations and sponsors to fund competition fees, uniforms, bows, shoes and other necessary items. “Having a special needs team has really brought our athletes together for a bigger cause,” said Davies. Florida Triple Threat also offers birthday parties, Parkour, and high school cheerleading. High school cheerleading teams can rent gym space and coaches are available to help train the teams upon request. Coaches run the birthday parties, which include free time and games in the gym area. Parties are scheduled by appointment only. During Parkour classes, which are held on Friday nights from 7pm–9pm, instructors create exercises, build obstacles, and set up drills so the athletes can learn a variety of Parkour skills. roadway Kids Studio has perfected the magic recipe to make stars out of childhood performers. Singing, acting, dancing and performing can be taught and even taught well, but that does not mean the child will embrace the arts. After meeting with BKS owner and Artistic Director, Michelle Ameerally, it became clear that their secret ingredient is passion. Passion that comes from Michelle and her team of professionals who take the time to understand each student, to see each student’s potential and then help them unlock that potential at their own pace. There is no pressure put on any student, there is simply opportunity to improve in a safe, encouraging environment. This allows the child to find their path, hone their skills and develop their own passion for performing in their own time frames. Founded in 2006, Broadway Kids Studio has seen dozens of their students go beyond BKS to make careers out of their passion for performing. BKS students have gone on to land leading roles on Broadway Tours, become members of pop musical groups, and acted in both leading and supporting roles on television shows. One such student, Mariangeli Collado, began with BKS at age 7 and Michelle has been her private vocal coach since. Remembering Mariangeli’s first few weeks, Michelle said, “Her vocals were extravagant! It was amazing to hear this tiny person who could sing double the octaves of most people. But she was shy and was lacking performing skills, so we got her into group singing and dance.” Fast forward a few years as she gained the skills, experience, confidence and the passion to perform, and Mariangeli starred as the youngest performer on the YouTube series HitStreak at age 10. She recorded a cover of Adele’s “Skyfall” that launched her popularity and went on to do a cover of Katy Perry’s “Roar” which landed her 25 million viewers and over 29,000 subscribers! At age 12, Mariangeli was chosen as a member of the all girl group L2M (which stand for “Listening 2 Music”) signed by Warner Brothers. L2M recorded “Girlz” which was featured in the LEGO® Friends original movie entitled Girlz 4 Life. Mariangeli’s character in the movie is Olivia. Mariangeli has spent the last year flying between Los Angeles, New York City and Ft. Lauderdale, but no matter where she is or how long she is gone, she can’t wait to get back to Broadway Kids Studio and her extended family there. “Mariangeli is so sweet, uber talented, humble and so appreciative,” said Michelle. “We are so proud of who she is as a person, even more than her talent. These are the things we work so hard to instill in our students,” Michelle added. A few other young phenoms within the Broadway Kids Studio family are Emily Taylor Kaufman, Maisy

Surman, Issie Swickle, and Sophia Carson. Emily Taylor Kaufman was recently selected by the Phil Collins “Little Dreams Foundation” which fulfills the dreams of aspiring musicians, artist and athletes. She performed as the lead in Hairspray and in the supporting cast of a variety of other musicals. Maisy Surman, a student of Michelle’s for the past 7 years, also a triple threat, was a featured singer in Neil Goldberg’s, “WE” celebrating Broward County’s 100th Anniversary. Issie Swickle, previously featured in the Sports & Activities Directory, performed as the lead in the national Broadway tour of Annie. Sophia Carson, now age 23, honed her voice, acting and dancing with Michelle’s help and has gone on to appear as one of the main characters, Evie, in the Disney Channel Original Movie, Disney’s Descendants and was a guest star on the television series Austin & Ally. Broadway Kids Studio is a full service performing arts studio with over 7000 square feet of performance space. BKS offers group classes and private lessons in singing, acting, dancing, and musical instruments (piano, drums, and guitar). Additionally, BKS offers one of the most affordable and innovative AfterSchool programs anywhere in the United States. Their After-School Program includes up to 15 group classes a week and pick-up from some local area schools. BKS also has seasonal performing arts camps and performance opportunities for the aspiring young professional looking to take that “next step.” These include Dance Competition and Dance Company Teams, Star Performers for vocalists and musicians, and yearround auditions for their Shows (straight plays and musical productions). Some of their productions take place on-site in their very own Black Box Theater. BKS students also have access to a fully equipped recording studio and Pro-Tools certified sound engineers ready to help you record your next hit! Broadway Kids Studio Summer Camp is a huge hit with campers and parent alike! The focus is learning, allowing everyone an equal opportunity to perform, and having fun. Due to their foundation in education, all students learn all aspects of the performing arts. This summer, choose from Creative Camp (ages 5-13) performing Willy Wonka Kids and Disney’s Aladdin Kids or Broadway Performance Camp (ages 8-18) performing Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr. and Bring It On, The Musical. To learn more about any of the performing arts programs, camps and competitive teams schedule a tour by calling 954-693-7500. to be for this skate, I learned so much. I came back from Nationals very motivated to make it there again next year and determined to make it to the podium.” One of the things that Alexa loves most about figure skating is that she is always learning something new. She is constantly working on improving her skating skills, jumps, and spins. Now that she will be moving up a level, she will need to learn triple jumps in order to be competitive. “Once you’ve landed all of your single jumps, you then learn double jumps,” said Alexa. “I now have all my double jumps and I am working on triple jumps. It’s the same with spins. There’s always a new difficult position to learn.” Alexa says that the most challenging thing about being so dedicated to the sport is balancing school and skating at the same time. She is a 7th grade student at Tequesta Trace Middle School, where she is in all gifted classes and Honors Algebra. Besides skating, she enjoys reading books, painting pottery, baking, and watching high-level figure skating on television. She especially loves watching the Olympics. Most of her future goals revolve around skating. “My dream and goal is to qualify for the Olympics in figure skating and win,” said Alexa. “I would also like to coach skating at some point in my life. I would love to become a sports psychologist to help skaters learn how to compete, because the mental confidence is just as important as being able to complete the hard jumps and spins.” It is not surprising that Ashley Wagner is Alexa’s favorite female figure skater, since both are lefty’s. “She skates like a lefty just like me,” said Alexa. “We jump and spin clockwise, whereas most skaters jump and spin counter-clockwise.”

welve-year-old Alexa Binder of Weston is passionate about skating. Like many young athletes, she dreams of winning the Olympics. After earning a spot at the 2016 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships, she may be on her way. “There is no place I’d rather be than on the ice,” said Alexa. “Figure skating is a hard sport, but it is very rewarding when you go out there in front of judges and the audience and you skate your best.” Alexa started figure skating when she was six years old. After attending a skating birthday party, her parents signed her up for group lessons. She quickly fell in love with the sport and began to increase the amount of lessons she was taking each week. She currently trains 2-3 hours a day, 6 days a week, and also takes ballet, yoga, and off ice conditioning. Alexa won a series of competitions in order to prepare and qualify for the U.S. Championships. She won her qualifying round and final round at the Florida Sunshine State Games in May 2015 and received the Elizabeth Stark Award. The next month, she came in 1st place at the Summer Chiller. In September 2015, she came in 1st place at the Labor Day Invitational and 1st place in her qualifying and final round at the SW Fall Classic. At the South Atlantic Regional in October 2015, 126 girls registered and Alexa won both her qualifying round and the championship round. She progressed to Eastern Sectionals, where she competed against 12 skaters at her level. She won the silver medal and qualified for the 2016 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships, where she competed against 12 girls from around the country. Unfortunately, Alexa did not have her best skate at Nationals. A few weeks before the competition, she had problems with her knees and was diagnosed with patellar tendinitis, or jumper’s knee. “Skating was very painful and I had to back off from training a bit, especially the double axel,” said Alexa. “Although I don’t think I was as prepared as I wanted

THE DOLPHIN CANCER CHALLENGE …AND WHAT MY DAUGHTER TAUGHT ME By Jodi Kurry Cohen, MS.Ed, Director of Early Childhood Programs, Temple Dor Dorim

I

t was a typical, very hot and muggy South Florida day. You know…the kind of day when you’ve just showered, left your front door, and by the time you get to the car you look like you’ve just finished a marathon. I was sluggishly on my way out the door to ride my bike with my sidekick and workout buddy, my seven year old daughter Jessie. Despite the stifling humidity, Jessie was determined to get a bike ride in…she said we needed to “train.” Jessie was well aware that I was getting ready to do my first “100 mile” cycle for the Dolphin Cancer Challenge, to raise funds for Sylvester Cancer Center. She was along for the “ride” from the moment I signed up. She had given me the confidence and encouragement with affirmative statements right from the start… “Of course you can do it mommy,” “We’ll train together,” “You’re doing a mitzvah.” The Mitzvah part was the statement that propelled me into action. Mitzvah, is the Jewish word for “doing a good deed” and once she said that, it made me realize how important it was to model that act for my daughter. That “training day” was one of many bike rides I took with my daughter. Of course my “real training days” involved hours on the bike on my own, but my real encouragement came on those rides with Jessie. Unsolicited, she would give me pep talks and motivational pushes that made me smile and relish those rides. And, despite her only being 7, we still spoke about Cancer, and illness and the

importance of finding ways for people to get better. She knew this ride had a purpose and even helped me make the “posts” online to solicit donations for the cause. When we reached our goal of $1,000 on the actual day of the race her enthusiastic “Woo Hoo!” matched mine. “How many people can we help mommy?” brought tears to my eyes. The day of the Cancer Challenge, I rode my 100 miles and it was an amazing experience. To see so many people there to battle a terrible disease that touches everyone’s life in some way, from survivors to family and friends, was quite a sight to see and one I’ll never forget. I learned how strong the human spirit and determination can be and discovered the strength that comes from ‘When you find your will, you find a way’. My daughter wanted to hear all about my ride and share it with her friends at school. She was just as proud as I felt about my accomplishment. I realized though, that most of what she learned and took away from this experience wasn’t from the day of the race, but the days leading up to it and our many casual conversations. I knew it from the empowering statements she made… “Of course you can do it mommy, you can do anything!”… “We can do this together, I’ll train you!” … “We have to help as many people as we can…Let’s make a post!” I was reminded just how important it is to plant these seeds of experience. Those words my daughter spoke showed me she was learning lessons that would carry her for a lifetime; that she can accomplish whatever she sets her mind to, that when we support each other we can find strength and the importance of helping others fight battles we believe in. Together we set out to “conquer” Cancer that day and I somehow know that won’t be the last time we unite on a cause and conquer again!

t takes a special person to be the voice of a neglected or abused child in the foster care system. You must be compassionate, yet assertive, curious, but not judgmental and encouraging without being unrealistic. These are some of the characteristics those interested in signing up to become a Guardian ad Litem should possess. The Guardian ad Litem Program of Broward County has been changing children’s lives in South Florida since 1983. Originally founded by Judge David Soukup of Seattle in 1977, the Court Appointed Special Advocate Program, known as the Guardian ad Litem Program in Florida, came to use a team approach to represent children in dependency proceedings. The staff, along with volunteers from the community, works to help children find loving, permanent homes. This includes attending court to testify on the child’s behalf, visiting the child and his or her family, and working with the Department of Children and Families and other community partners to provide recommendations pertaining to the best interest of the child. GAL of the year, Griselda Hale, has been involved in the program for over 19 years. She gave a very powerful and heartfelt response when she was recently asked why she decided to volunteer as a Guardian. “My children were grown and both had moved away for college. I decided since the Universe had been so gentle with me, it was time to return the favor to others in a similar way.” As of right now, there are a little over 3,600 children in Broward County in the care of the Department of Children and Families and only about 700 volunteer Guardians. There are many volunteers who bravely take on more than one case and cases that involve siblings. However, there are still over 300 children that have not been appointed a Guardian, and while these numbers are not ideal, there is still hope for the current cases and the future of the children involved. This became even more apparent to me after speaking to Maruja Marin. Maruja is a remarkable success story, to say the least. She was transferred from one broken home to another, with little hope for a normal childhood or adolescence. That is until she was paired with her GAL. “My GAL was like a mom to me. She was extremely helpful and supportive from day one.” At the time, Maruja was dealing with obstacles that many children her age face while attending school and coping with her family life at home. However, in addition to these challenges, she didn’t speak English. She insists that without the help of her GAL, she would not be where she is today. “We immediately clicked. I remember her telling me, ‘Only God knows why you are going through this.’ Every cry I had was with her.” Today, Maruja is a successful businesswoman who has purchased and now runs a growing insurance

company and has two children of her own. She still thanks her GAL for always being there to support her and never complaining about doing so. Success stories like these are what inspire others to serve and give back to their community. But in order to achieve such positive outcomes, there must be more volunteers willing to donate their time. “The most challenging aspect of being a Guardian is that everyone is overworked,” says Alan Garber. Alan has only been part of the program for a few months now, but he has already witnessed the positive impact he himself had on a small group of kids at a recent visit to a local shelter. “It’s impossible not to get attached to these kids. They are so grateful for any amount of time a positive role model is able to spend with them.” And you don’t have to be a doctor, a lawyer or even a CPA such as Alan to volunteer. The most common misconception is that having an abundance of disposable income is the key factor to being able to serve. This simply isn’t true. Each Guardian ad Litem has something unique to offer whether they originally knew it or not. For Alan, it’s juggling. He uses this talent as an icebreaker with the kids and quickly gets (and holds) their attention with this fun and entertaining pastime. In addition to the entertainment factor, studies show that three-ball cascade juggling increases activity in the occipitotemporal cortex, contributing to the processes relevant to learning. So you may be asking yourself, how can I get involved? According to Griselda, “All you need is an open mind, an open heart and no expectations of what you may or may not accomplish.” Of course, due to the sensitive nature of the majority of these cases, additional education and guidance is required. After a pre-screening interview and level II background check, volunteers must complete 30 hours of additional training: 28 classroom hours and 2 courtroom hours. Once the training requirements have been met and personal references have been contacted, the individual is certified, matched with a volunteer supervisor and agrees to service for a minimum of one year. GALs must be 21 years of age or older, however, there are volunteer opportunities for college students who are 19 years of age or older, and high school students over the age of 16 are encouraged to sign up for other opportunities to meet their required community service hours. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month as well as National Volunteer Month. What better way to celebrate both than by becoming a Guardian ad Litem? You can be the voice of a child who may not currently have one. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said it best; “Everybody can be great because everybody can serve.” For more information on how you can become a Guardian ad Litem, visit www.galbroward.org or call (954) 831-6214.

M

ost of the reporting on the burgeoning generational problem of unpaid and outstanding student loan debt attempts to convey the impact through numbers. For example, a March 2014 Gallup survey of 30,000 college graduates of all ages found that: • Approximately 70 percent of all college graduates still have student loans to repay. • The average balance is more than $33,000 (up from $18,600 10 years ago). Sounds ominous, right? Well, how about these factoids, from a January 2014 Huffington Post article by Kyle McCarthy: • Currently, more than 40 million Americans hold student debt. The population with student loans is actually greater than the entire population of Canada, Poland, North Korea, Australia and more than 200 other countries. It’s also about four times greater than the population of Sweden. Out of the nearly 40 million borrowers, about seven million have defaulted on these student debts, Those numbers are stunning. And many economists believe the student loan burden has grown so large it is impacting sectors of the national economy, like new housing construction – graduates can’t afford to buy a home because a significant percentage of their earnings is servicing debt. Beyond the numbers, and calculations of wider economic impact, there are perhaps even greater concerns. For 30 years, the Gallup organization has used a series of questions to ask respondents how satisfied they are with their quality of life. The questions identify five areas of well-being: purpose, financial, community, physical, and social. When these questions were put to graduates in the most recent survey, those with high student loan debt self-reported significantly lower quality-of-life assessments. The finding that excess student debt impacts quality of life isn’t surprising. What does raise an eyebrow is how long the condition lasts. Per Gallup: Even 24 years after graduation, students who borrowed more than $25,000 are less likely to enjoy their work and less financially and physically fit than their counterparts who graduated without debt. For more recent college grads, the discrepancy is even more pronounced.

With the exception of the social category, graduates with student debt saw themselves as less successful (or thriving) in comparison to their peers who had no debt. The difference was most pronounced in regard to assessments of physical and financial well-being. Since the responses were subjective, it’s not clear that the high-debt/ lower-quality-of-life connection is causal or correlational – i.e., does high debt lead to poor health, or do unhealthy people also happen to have a lot of debt? But the implications are sobering: assuming too much debt early in adulthood has a long-term and wide-spread negative impact. For several generations, the decision to finance a college education has been relatively easy: getting a degree is so valuable, it’s worth borrowing for. The financial anchor of debt could usually be overcome by the increased earnings expected from a higher level of education. But in the last decade, the decision to borrow has become less certain. Student debt has a tipping point; the costs can be too steep, and the consequences can seep into other aspects of life. These factors should prompt serious discussions for parents and prospective students. For parents with younger children, it increases the urgency to establish or increase savings allocations. For those on the cusp of attending college, the conversation may be more difficult. At what point does a parent or a young adult say “I/we can’t – or won’t – borrow any more money to go to school?” Often, this is the first critical financial decision a young adult will make: Even if my parents are willing to co-sign, how much debt should I have before I’ve even begun a career? As the reports suggests, this is not purely a financial decision. A debt incurred today can be a determining factor for a long time after – in all areas of life. n February 8, 2016, students in Mrs. Gold’s second grade gifted/highachieving class at Manatee Bay Elementary celebrated cultural diversity. At Manatee Bay Elementary there are many cultures represented which lends itself to a variety of educational experiences. Parents are welcomed and heavily encouraged to be involved at the school. The parent volunteers in Mrs. Gold’s class prepared a wonderful lesson on the Chinese New Year. The front of the classroom was decorated with beautiful red couplets (black symbols written on red paper) and red oval lanterns. Students read an article from a newspaper on Chinese lanterns that morning prior to the parents coming. The lesson began with a cartoon video that provided a background of the holiday’s history in a fun way. Students examined primary and secondary sources. Chinese symbols on paper and colorful photographs of China were discussed and passed around the classroom. Using a globe, students could see where China was located. They recently listened to a cute story called The Runaway Wok by Ying Chang Compestine that took place in Beijing during the Chinese New Year. Some of the things they learned included that the Chinese people believe that a good start to the year will lead to a lucky year, we just entered the year of the monkey, each new year is named after one animal, the most common foods eaten include dumplings, spring rolls and fish, and that it is a time for families to be together. Similarities to common holidays practiced in the United Stated were discussed. In second grade, students are learning about immigration. From the lesson, the students were able to explain the cultural influences and contributions from the Chinese. In centers, active engagement was evident. Smiles could be seen on both the children and the parent volunteers. One learning center involved learning how to use chopsticks. Several students commented that it was their first time. The children thoroughly enjoyed practicing their skills by using pretzels and gummy bears. Another center involved practice writing Chinese symbols. Students were given a paintbrush and paint and had to trace the characters. Creating the brushstrokes proved to be a fun challenge. Other hands-on centers included making dumplings with clay and an art project involving cutting red paper and making a three dimensional shape. Delicious spring rolls were given as a snack. At the end of the lesson, Mrs. Huang demonstrated how to do calligraphy with water and a paintbrush on a special mat. As a special treat, red envelopes with gold coins were given in the hope of good luck. Additionally, bookmarks with each student’s Chinese name were given out. The school values their resources and the continued support of their parents.

SCHOOLS By Andrea Alter, Dance Teacher

F

alcon Cove Middle School is pleased to announce the expansion of its Fine Arts curriculum. In addition to studying Music, Drama, Visual Art, Film and Video Production, students now have the opportunity to pursue Dance. The new Dance program is the result of the school’s effort to provide more diverse opportunities for students to participate in the arts. The program, led by dance instructor Andrea Alter, has grown to include more than 150 students. “I’m honored to be a part of the launch of the Dance program. I couldn’t be more proud of the strides we’ve made in a short period of time and I look forward to helping the program grow,” said Ms. Alter. Dance classes are offered during the day as an elective to students in grades 6, 7 and 8. Multiple dance forms are studied, including jazz, modern, ballet and musical theatre dance. Students receive a solid foundation in technique and learn how to create and perform their own choreography. A segment of the course also includes written and creative assignments such as journaling, poetry, and art projects. “The most important responsibility I have as a dance teacher is to help my students discover their own creative potential,” said Andrea Alter. “Creative skills are necessary in every area of life. Unfortunately, with little funding for the arts, most schools can’t afford to provide opportunities for students to develop creative skills.

I’m privileged to teach at Falcon Cove where the administration and community recognize what the creative arts can offer.” Opportunities for students to study Dance in school are rare. In fact, in Broward County Public Schools, Falcon Cove is one of only two middle schools with a Dance program. The only other middle school in the district with a Dance program is Parkway Middle School, a performing arts magnet school. Dance is a powerful tool for helping students mature physically. In addition to the physical benefits, dance provides an outlet for expression, fosters social interaction and helps students learn to work within a group dynamic. With all of the physical and social benefits of dance, it’s surprising that more schools aren’t including it in the curriculum. Kudos should be given to Falcon Cove Principal, Dr. Mark Kaplan, for his innovative leadership and dedication to providing exceptional learning opportunities for his students. Falcon Cove Dance students are currently preparing for their spring performance of “Alice in Wonderland,” which will be performed on June 1st and 2nd. For more information, call (754) 323-3200 or email andrea.alter@browardschools.com.

By Laurence Pons, Gator Run Board Member/Reflections Coordinator

W

hat happens if you would “Let your imagination fly?” This is what students from Gator Run elementary were encouraged to answer at the beginning of the school year, along with thousands of other American students by participating in Reflections – a Parent Teacher Association (PTA) national arts recognition and achievement program that has existed since 1969. The program provides an excellent opportunity for students to unleash their creative talents and be inspired. In showcasing and celebrating student talent, Reflections increases community awareness of the importance of the arts in education. Students are invited to create original works of art in the categories of dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts to best interpret what the annual theme means to them. This year’s theme was “Let Your Imagination Fly.” The arts are an important part of children’s education because they emphasize creativity, collaboration, communication, cultural awareness, critical thinking and strengthen problem solving. The experience of making decisions and choices while creating art teaches life-long lessons. Another wonderful benefit of this art program is to encourage inventiveness. Principal Keith Peters wants his students to feel free to try new things. “It is ok to fail,” he and his teaching team will repeatedly reassure their students. Being a voluntary program, Reflections is a perfect opportunity for children to experience new areas and skills they may not master yet and will learn to discover and improve over time. When

kids are encouraged to express themselves and take risks in creating art, they develop a sense of innovation that will be important in their adult lives. Gator Run’s motto couldn’t be more inviting in that aspect. “Imagination to innovation: follow your passion!” PTA Reflections supports student success and connects families and schools to one another and to their community. Various schools’ PTA volunteers in charge of the program regularly meet and share their experience together. Reflections judges are very often local based artists, businesses or community branches, offering their time and expertise. French painter and sculptor Chris Guerin residing in Weston reminds parents and adult caregivers to refrain from drawing with/for their child. “Parents must let their children use their own talent. Stay interested and supportive of their piece of art. In our world, art is very important because it is the memory of our civilization.” Parents, teachers and local citizens all concur that the arts in schools are of utmost importance in giving a student a well-rounded and diverse education. Paul Weiner, Music Teacher at Gator Run Elementary adds, “In my 30+ years as an educator on many different grade levels, I have witnessed quite a few students who struggle with academic subjects, yet excel in the arts and therefore gain knowledge and confidence both on a social and intellectual level. Just think, what would this world would be without music and art?!”

BRIGHT STEPS FORWARD, INC. F

ounded in 2005 to help families in need, Bright Steps Forward, Inc. is a 501(c)3 organization with the mission to ensure that all children with neurological disorders such as autism and cerebral palsy have access to top quality physical, occupational, speech and ABA therapy. We at Bright Steps Forward believe that all children have the ability to exceed expectations, achieve unexpected milestones and blossom before our eyes with the proper therapy and encouragement. In fact, we have seen the miracle of wonderment many times as children learn they DO have skills, that they SHOULD set goals, and that dreams CAN come true when their confidence is supported through early and intensive therapeutic interventions. Unfortunately, not all families have the ability or opportunity to take advantage of such services for their child, which is why Bright Steps Forward (BSF) was started. Founder Eileen de Oliveira witnessed her son, Lucas (who was born with cerebral palsy) learn to crawl and walk through early and intensive pediatric therapies and he exceeded all expectations. It was this breakthrough in Lucas’ development that inspired Eileen to create Bright Steps Forward so that others could benefit from the therapies that Lucas was privileged to receive. Today, children from all over the world are helped by assistance through Bright Steps

Forward and are now able to receive treatments and therapies that would otherwise be out of reach for them; families who either cannot afford insurance or afford the copay and deductibles because of other added expenses that go along with having a disabled child. Bright Steps Forward also operates a fully accredited school for children with disabilities for children from Kindergarten through 12th grade. Students attending Bright Steps Forward come from educational or home environments where the expectations were overwhelming and they were unsuccessful. Many of these students are low to average functioning children, adolescents and teenagers diagnosed with Autism, Aspergers, PDD, NVLD and other autistic spectrum disorders. Unlike larger public schools, the classrooms at BSF are smaller thus preventing a child from getting lost. BSF teachers nurture each student to discover their own natural strengths and achieve their maximum potential. BSF’s academic standards are aligned with the State of Florida and each child is given an equal opportunity to get the education that all children deserve. Step Up for Students and McKay Scholarships are accepted. Cerebral Palsy is a group of permanent movement disorders that appear in early childhood. Signs and symptoms vary between people but may include poor coordination, stiff muscles, weak muscles, and tremors. There may be problems with sensation, vision, hearing, swallowing and speaking. Often babies with cerebral palsy do not roll over, sit, crawl or walk as early as other children their age. Difficulty with the ability to think or reason and seizures each occurs in about one third of people with CP. Autism s a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication, and restricted and repetitive behavior. Every child is a miracle waiting to happen if they just get the chance. IS YOUR CHILD ON TRACK TO PASS? Let us help break down barriers to school success! By Lori Bitar, CEO, Academic Advocates, Inc.

s your child in danger of “not meeting promotion criteria”? This vague and often hidden phrase is the warning and legal statement that a teacher has to use to notify you that your child might not be promoted to the next grade. If your child has been having difficulty in a subject, you may have seen a “3” or an X on the report card/interim report notifying you that your child may be retained if they don’t master the prescribed criteria. As a parent you might feel frustrated and concerned, but unsure of what to do to help. Here are a few suggestions to help you take next steps to make sure your child is on track to pass their current grade and upcoming assessments. • Ensure that the school has developed a plan of remediation and is implementing the correct strategies to assist your child. This is called a Progress Monitoring Plan (PMP) and you should have a copy with current data. • Ask your teacher or school for the end of year promotion criteria for your student’s grade level and how close your child is to scoring above the criteria. This can help you determine what support you might need. • Know what dates your child will be taking the assessments and if they will be computer-based or on paper/pencil. There are several ways to help students prepare for each type of test. The tests begin 2/29 and run through 4/12. Each grade level and subject are assigned different windows to test. http://www.broward.k12.fl.us/sar/docs/references/TestingCalendar.pdf • Seek outside tutoring and instruction that will target and strengthen your child’s needed areas. Many companies offer homework help or random worksheets for their tutoring curriculum, whereas we are highly specialized and specific in our programming to ensure student mastery. You are your child’s first and best advocate in ensuring they get the educational services they deserve. If the school or teacher can’t provide you with this information, you have to stay persistent and insistent that they give you current data of how your child is performing and what they will need in order to pass. Academic Advocates wants to support you in the process so that you can be empowered to stay informed with the most accurate and current information. We have helped many families over the years with our highly specialized support and tutoring. We offer services year-round in all academic areas, for all ages. Feel free to visit our website, www.academicadvocates. org, or call our offices for further assistance. isn’t your average sight. On each wall you have countless photographs of students, teachers, administrators, and staff posing and smiling. “Inside Out,” created by Parisian street artist JR, is a global art project that was brought to Broward County to celebrate its 100th birthday. This global art project has appeared around the globe on walls, sidewalks, streets, skyscrapers, and historic buildings. More than 120,000 people have participated by speaking their stories with a photo, rather than words.

Tequesta Trace Middle School’s Peer Counseling Program jumped at the opportunity to participate in such an amazing activity and named it, “Everyone Matters.” Hundreds of photos were put on the walls of our cafeteria, in full view every day. While some photos had a simple smile, others had goofy faces, peace signs, and cute expressions. This project supports, values, and cherishes the person you are. The Peer Counseling program celebrates everyone’s true beauty with this wonderful display.

How to Know When School Problems Need Intervention By Dr. Raymond J. Huntington

I

t’s perfectly normal for children to face challenging periods in school, but problems that worsen or seem to seep into other areas of a child’s life shouldn’t be ignored. Other than paying attention to grades, how can you tell whether an academic issue calls for your involvement? Here are a few things to look for that are likely symptoms of a bigger problem that you should address: Lost interest – Dramatic changes in a child’s motivation and interest, especially if the child once was eager to learn, are worth investigating further. Indifference toward school and learning may be indicative of the child’s lost confidence in his or her abilities. After repeated disappointments in school, some children would rather not try at all than continue to try and fail. Bad attitude – A child who frequently expresses displeasure and even anger about school, teachers and homework has probably surpassed his or her threshold of normal frustration. Often, negativity overcomes children who struggle in school and feel unable to overcome their problems. Low self-esteem – Children’s hopeless, disparaging statements about themselves and school (I’m stupid! I’ll never understand this! I hate school!) should be a red flag for parents, especially if they are frequent. This typically points to a learning issue that has grown over time and the child has reached a low point. Consistent difficulty grasping assignments and concepts – Gaps in academic skills can create major roadblocks for children as they move through the school year. Left uncorrected, these gaps can make it difficult, if not impossible, for a child to learn

effectively because he or she might be missing skills from previous grades. Without the necessary building blocks, the child might struggle to grasp new, more challenging content and concepts. Too much time on homework – A child who puts a lot of effort and time into homework but still struggles to complete it (or complete it correctly) might be grappling with comprehension issues, procrastination (due to a lack of understanding) or another problem. Unfocused most of the time – A child who is easily distracted or disengaged might need targeted help. He or she might be tuning out in class or during homework time for a variety of reasons that stem from learning difficulties, diminished confidence or other problems. Behavioral changes – Change in demeanor can mean many things and often points to a child’s concerns about his or her academic challenges. A child who feels embarrassed about his or her lack of skills, for example, might be disruptive in the classroom to deflect any focus on him or herself. Ups and downs are to be expected throughout your child’s school years, but some red flags shouldn’t be ignored. If you are growing more concerned each day about your child’s academic well being, or if you know your child is having difficulty in school but are not sure how to help, call Huntington Learning Center. We can pinpoint the problems and take action to help your child raise his or her grades, confidence and motivation. About Huntington: Huntington is the tutoring and test prep leader. n February, Cypress Bay’s basketball court was renovated. The new court is beach-themed, with the words “The Bay” in the center of the court. “The new court looks really nice,” senior Jake Londos said. “We have played on it and it feels right.” The school’s athletic director, Bill Caruso, was a big part of the installation of the new court. “No one made us change the court, but the floor finish was peeling and it definitely needed to be redone,” Caruso said. Other than the fact that the new court is better for playing on, Caruso sees it as an upgrade from the last court. “The court will hopefully be a nice feature everyone likes and make our facility stand out as one of the best in the county,” Caruso said. During the time that the court was being renovated, the team was not able to play any home games. “It was heartbreaking not being able to play at home,” senior Brett Andjich said. “There is nothing like playing in front of your own fans.” The boys’ basketball team won the district championship this year and received the chance to host a game on its new court during the first round of the regional tournament on February 11 against Taravella. “When we learned that we got to play at home at least one more time, we just couldn’t wait for that day to come. We knew the atmosphere would be crazy,” Londos said. Taravella was projected to win by RMF Magazine, but Cypress Bay knew that it didn’t matter what anyone else thought. “We

were confident going into the game,” Andjich said. “We wanted to prove everyone wrong.” Cypress Bay backed up its confidence with a convincing 80-46 win over Taravella. “That was one of the greatest games I have been a part of in my Cypress Bay career,” Londos said. “Everything went our way, and the fans were supporting us the whole time.” Devin Ramirez, the captain of Cypress Bay’s student section, the Lightning Lunatics, enjoys supporting the team every chance he gets. “I am part of the Lunatics because I love making noise and helping the team win,” Ramirez said. “That game was amazing and the new court made it even better.” After that game, the Lightning played against Coral Springs High on February 16, but this game would not be played in Cypress Bay’s arena. Once again, Cypress Bay was projected to lose, but the team showed up ready to play. They had a 10-point lead at one point in the game, but the game ended with a 75-72 loss and its season was over. “I think we would have won if we got to play that game at home,” Andjich said. “The atmosphere really makes a big difference.” Even though the basketball season for this year has come to an end, the team will be able to play all of its home games next year without any interruptions.

them,” said Coach Julie Sikorski. In the semi-final game, Tequesta defeated Pines Middle by a score of 21-10, 21-14. In the final championship match, the Tequesta girls defeated Lyons Creek 21-14, 2117. Tequesta’s middle hitter, Nadine Zaccour, was named tournament MVP. “This was a great accomplishment for all of our players as they put in a lot of hard work all season long,” stated Coach Sikorski.

Mercedes Soledad Moresco, Educando a America, Founder and Director

I

f you are looking for a language camp, our 100% Spanish immersion program is your best option. Educando a America has been offering a summer camp during June and July since 2007 and has become an unparalleled excellent choice for parents that want their kids to really learn and have fun at the same time. As the Director of the School I am proud to say that our campers and their parents can see the difference in the acquisition of the language since the very beginning. As experienced educators, we know that children need motivation to learn, and that’s what we do during the summer. Our Project based program encourages children to enjoy the learning process without even realize that they are learning a language. On the other hand, our strong emphasis on the Hispanic community has maintained a high average of Spanish Heritage students that enroll every year as part of their summer’s routines. Instead of visiting their homelands they enroll their children in our camp

and relax. They know they will be safe, have fun, and learn. And that’s a lot to ask for a regular summer camp. If you have been experiencing other camps, you know what we mean when we say unsafe, and unclean environments, with kids just hanging around with friends. In all these years, we have made a must of simple things: safety, tidy rooms and caring teachers that want their children to learn and love the language. We love our students as much as you love your children. Placing your child in a camp may be expensive. We know that and that’s why we want to make your money count. You will see the difference in your child’s language acquisition after a few weeks in our camp. You’ll be amazed. And you’ll love it. As a quick reference, we offer the camp within the facilities of Imagine Charter School in Weston to children between 3 and 12 years old. Teenagers and youth can join our summer classes program attending up to five days a week for two hours in a small group class. All levels are welcome. We split campers by ages (3-5 years old, 6 to 8 and 9 to 12 years old groups).

Different levels are managed inside the classroom with different reading or writing activities.
