Dear Readers, JUMP, SPLASH, DIVE, SURF, SING, RUN, DANCE, SKIP, HOP & PLAY your way into summer with this special Summer Camp issue! We are highlighting camps that offer everything from traditional day camps to sleep-away camps to specialty camps. There is a camp for every type of child for every interest. They can try something new, hone skills doing something they enjoy or quite simply, just enjoy being carefree doing fun things with their friends. Exactly what summer should be...FUN! We hope you find something fun for the whole family to do together in our events section. We have amassed an array of opportunities to create life long memories. Head out to a festival, take in a ball game, or enter a fun family 5K walk/run for a charity. If you vacation away over the summer, we wish you safe travels and wonderful new experiences. Don’t forget to take pictures and share them with us. We love to include fun family photos around the directory! In honor of the hardest working people on Earth, whose jobs are 24/7, 365 days a year... MOMS & DADS, WE SALUTE YOU! Happy Mother’s & Father’s Day to you, the Generals, who volunteer to be on the front lines to protect your troops. Yes, it does take an army to raise a child; the doctors, caregivers, family members, coaches, teachers and neighbors are all in the chain of command and have their marching orders. However, it is the parents, the Generals, who go down range to sniff out potential dangers, ambushes, enemy fire and land mines. You have that sense to know when things are not right. You do your reconnaissance and strategize to create your battle plan in hopes to outflank, outsmart and eliminate any potential threats so that no man (child) is left behind. You may not wear camouflage, but this parenting command does fatigue you. Know that you are not alone fighting the good fight to raise good, well-adjusted, well-educated children to adulthood. You may not win every battle, but your sites are on winning the war. You put boots on the ground for every mission. You tend to the wounded. You sacrifice everything to win at parenting. There is no retreat. This tour of duty lasts a lifetime. Hopefully, the outcome of this war is a generation of emancipated, kind, healthy and productive people who give more than they take in this world. It’s a mission that seems impossible, but it is not. Impossible is not an option for Generals. Perhaps you do not know it yet, but you are your child’s hero. We salute you for your courage and bravery, your leadership and sacrifice. There is no force out there stronger than the love a parent has for their child. Roger that! My best to you, Margot

Dear Residents, Spring is a time of growth and renewal and that’s certainly the case here in Weston. Just driving around town it’s plain to see that our City continues to grow and expand, offering residents more services, better infrastructure, and greater cultural offerings. Throughout Weston, economic investments in private development and redevelopment are underway. These include: the old Publix in the Country Isles Shopping Center has been leveled, additional space acquired, and a new and larger Publix is being constructed; a new Neurological Center and Cancer Care Center on the Cleveland Clinic campus is complete and a parking garage underway; by premier real estate developers Terra Group. Private development is not alone. Weston’s religious community saw the opening of St. Katherine Drexel Church and expansions at St. Paul Lutheran Church. The City itself has been in the midst of numerous capital improvement projects including the construction of the Administrative Services Center which is expected to

be occupied in May of this year, and most everyone has likely seen drainage and force main improvement projects throughout the City. A water service replacement

and luxury private homes will go up on the former Bonaventure West Golf Course

redevelopment in the pipe-line, show once again, that developers, investors and

project will begin shortly in the Garden Homes area of Country Isles, one of the oldest communities within the City. Geographical Information System tracking of water line breaks and service calls assisted in targeting this area for new lines in a pro-active measure to ensure consistent service. These projects, along with other potential businesses believe that Weston is the premier place to invest for the future. As for events, we have something for everyone. April will bring the ever-popular Royal Egg Hunt on April 4th, a Moonlight Movie in the Park, and professional theater for children with a performance of Cinderella. As you can see, Spring has certainly sprung in Weston. I urge you to take advantage of all that Weston has to offer. Until next time…

Your Mayor,

Daniel J. Stermer Mayor of Weston

ike many kids their age, Ethan Rogge, 11, and Yves Rogge, 9, spent many afternoons and weekends selling lemonade on the corner near their Weston home. The siblings recently turned their neighborhood project into a business, which includes a state-of-the-art lemonade stand, a unique product, and a way to give back to the community. “The kids were having fun with it, but they were barely covering their costs,” said their father, Mark Rogge, who is an entrepreneur. “I thought it was a great opportunity to teach them about business, as well as the importance of giving back. I wanted them to see that anything is possible, even with something as rudimentary as a lemonade stand.” After naming the business E&Y Lemonade, which is short for Ethan & Yves, Mark and his kids began researching the best way to produce and deliver the product. They tasted and analyzed a variety of lemonades to help them develop their own. They decided to offer their customers some choices, so they created a variety of flavors, such as regular lemonade, strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mango, peach, watermelon and more. They also agreed to use foam cups, which they determined would keep the lemonade colder longer. The next step was to build a self-contained lemonade stand that could deliver the fresh-squeezed, made-to-order product. They built a stand on top of a wagon, so it could easily be moved to different locations. The stand includes a place to store cups, as well as an ice cooler and refrigerated water reservoir. After the kids squeeze the lemons to order, they add sugar and ice. Next, the water is pumped through a double filter and right into the cup. They shake it up and it is ready to serve. Once they were ready to sell, the next step was to identify a location. They wanted to find a way to keep some of the money and also give back to the community. They approached the Weston Warriors about selling at their Homecoming game. Since both had participated in the program, Ethan as a football player and Yves as a cheerleader, they thought it was a great place to launch their business. They turned it into a fundraiser by donating a percentage of the proceeds to the Warriors program. The lemonade stand was an instant success at the game. Customers lined up to quench their thirst on a hot day. When there was a lull, Ethan and Yves rolled their mobile cart to the customers for added convenience. “The lemonade was so fresh,” said Tom Stone, who sampled the product at the game. “In fact, it was the best glass of lemonade I have ever had!” Ethan said that the key to their success was in their total plan. “People liked that we had a lot of flavors,” said Ethan. “They knew that it was fresh, since we squeezed the lemons in front of them. They were also happy when we brought the lemonade to them and they did not even have to get out of their seats.” Yves was glad she was able to help her team. “I was happy that we could help the Warriors buy equipment,” said Yves. “It was a lot of fun selling the lemonade.” The siblings are hoping to work with other charities and organizations to help them with their fundraising efforts. he public is invited to learn more about astronomy and space exploration at the 3rd Annual Astronomy Day. The outdoor festival will be held on April 25, from 10am to 1pm, at the Buehler Planetarium and Observatory, which is located on the Broward College Central Campus in Davie.

22

Approximately 500 people are expected to attend the free event. They will have an opportunity to participate in hands-on activities, such as building and launching two different types of rockets. They can watch “Space School,” which will be shown to the general public for the first time. The live action planetarium show follows astronauts as they train underwater to work in outer space. During the show, the astronauts visit the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory in Houston, which has a full-size mockup of a space station, and spend one week at the Aquarius Underwater Laboratory in Key Largo, which is the only undersea laboratory dedicated to marine science operating in the world. Built in 1965, the Buehler Planetarium was one of the first buildings constructed on the Broward College Central Campus. Since then, it has undergone several renovations. The state-of-the-art planetarium features a 40-foot dome that uses a Definiti full dome video system, allowing visitors to see the night sky in detail - without city lights. “Visitors who have not been to a planetarium in a while are often surprised at how much they have changed,” said Susan Barnett, Director of Buehler Planetarium and Observatory. “Buehler is a state-of-the-art, all-digital, full dome, immersive environment. Visitors can see the stars from an earth-based view; fly through the rings of Saturn or go to the edge of the Galaxy and look back at the Earth.” The Planetarium is host to several children and adult activities and shows on a weekly basis. On Wednesday nights at 7pm, during “Stories for a Starry Night,” visitors can enjoy a live lecture that explores the current night sky. They will hear stories and information about bright

stars, planets, constellations and other objects in the sky. Weekend shows are a combination of movies and a sky tour. On Saturdays, at 1:30pm, there is a show for young children, ages 2 to 9. On Fridays, at 7pm, and Saturdays, at 3pm and 7pm, there is a feature presentation. Built in 2002, the Observatory is located across from the Planetarium. It contains a fleet of different portable telescopes that are up to 14 inches in diameter. Four times a week, the telescopes are set up on the patio. An astronomer is always present to guide visitors and answer any questions. On Wednesday afternoons, from 1pm - 3pm, visitors can safely look at the Sun, our closest star. On Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, from 8pm -10pm, visitors can see the Moon, planets, double stars, nebulae, galaxies, and more. “For the next few months, Jupiter will be spectacular due to the relative positions of Jupiter, the Earth and the Sun,” said Barnett. Buehler also offers weeklong space camps during school breaks and the summer. Campers, ages 8 to 12, have an opportunity to explore rockets, telescopes, and astronomy. They participate in a variety of hands-on activities, which include building several types of rockets. Summer dates are: June 22-26 and August 10-14. Some Planetarium shows are discounted for Broward College students and available at a low cost to the public. Teachers are encouraged to arrange field trips to Buehler Planetarium. Buehler Planetarium and Observatory is located at 501 Davie Road in Davie. For information, schedules and special events, visit “Broward College Buehler Planetarium” on Facebook.

ountain biking continues to grow in popularity in South Florida. Local parks have trail systems that offer a variety of terrain, as well as the chance to see some of Florida’s unique wildlife and lush natural areas. All you need is a bike, helmet and pads, as well as a tremendous amount of endurance, core strength, balance and bike handling skills. The Memorial Mountain Bike Team is a great way to enjoy the sport with other enthusiasts in the area. “South Florida has a very strong mountain biking community,” said Dr. Pierre Pasche, emergency room physician at Memorial Hospital Miramar, who started the group three years ago with Dr. Juan Villegas, emergency room physician, and David Kalin, emergency room paramedic. “It is nice to ride with other bikers who also love cycling.” Pasche started biking as way to relieve stress and stay fit by getting some exercise outdoors. He began with road biking, but quickly got bored and turned to mountain biking. “Mountain biking is more challenging and interesting than road biking, but it is also a little more dangerous,” said Pasche. “Most of the trails are in the woods or mangroves and very scenic. They are filled with ramps, climbs, drops and bridges, which make it a great cardiovascular workout.” The mountain biking group is an offshoot of Memorial Healthcare System’s road biking group, which was founded 23 years ago and includes hundreds of cyclists that participate in rides throughout West Broward. Mountain biking members join through the road

biking group and wear the same Team Memorial outfit. Some are motivated by the competition, while others ride for the fun of it. All levels are welcome. Members meet at one of the many parks in the area that offer mountain biking, such as Oleta River State Park, Markham Park, Quiet Waters Park, Virginia Key Beach Park, and Amelia Earhart Park. Most of the parks have extensive trail systems, ranging from 7 to 17 miles, which offer mountain bikers a challenging experience at any level. Cyclists are often surprised to find that South Florida is not as flat as they thought. Markham Park has approximately 10 miles of single and double trails filled with manmade and natural features like crossover bridges, ramps, logs, rocks, wooden berms, sharp turns, natural elevation changes and more. Oleta River State Park has over 10 miles of challenging, intermediate mountain bike trails, as well as over four miles of novice trails and three miles of paved trails for beginners. The trails wind through areas of lush vegetation, mangrove creeks, tall pines and wading pools. Along the way, bikers are likely to see birds and other wildlife as they encounter grass, roots, dirt, mud, sand and rocks, log crossings, short plank bridges and more. The group also participates in event and charity rides throughout Florida, as well as competitions in other states. Many of the members have won multiple races this year. “Mountain biking is worldwide sport, so you can do it wherever you go,” said Pasche. “All you need to get started is a mountain bike and protective gear. After you purchase the initial equipment, it is relatively inexpensive to ride. We encourage anyone who loves mountain biking or wants to try the sport to join our group.” There is no cost to join. Those who register online are eligible to receive a Louis Garnau shirt, shorts and socks at cost. For information, visit www.teammemorial.com or send an email to ppasche@mhs.net.

as some other local parks. Most of the kids swim at the Cooper City Pool and Tennis Center, but some are involved with their own swim programs. While Supik works with the younger kids on biking, the older and more advanced members have an opportunity to train with Steve Mlujeak, former team captain of the Armed Forces Cycling Team, and Carl Sundquist, who is a former Olympian. Both are USA cycling certified coaches. They work with the kids on road biking and mountain biking skills. Bikers, ages 9 to 18 are divided into five groups based on age and ability. They are all at different levels. The beginners work on learning bike handling skills; how to ride in a group; cornering; shifting; riding in a pace line and more. The more advanced riders focus on fitness, strength, endurance and team tactics. “Our goal is to promote a healthy, active lifestyle,” said Mlujeak. “Cycling is a lifelong sport. Some of the kids ride for fun, while others want to compete.” During road bike season, from January to October, the group trains at Brian Piccolo Park on the Velodrome and paved bike path. It is a safe place to train, without having to ride on the open road. During mountain biking season, from late September to February, they ride at a variety of parks in the area. There is some overlap between the two seasons. Since Mlujeak started the group three years ago, he has had the opportunity to train many successful cyclists. There have been over 15 state champions and four national champions. Four cyclists ride for their colleges or universities and one signed a pro contract.

riathlons are a great way for kids to stay active and have fun. The Interactive Metronome Junior Development Cycling Team offers a way for kids to train and compete. The team is dedicated to promoting a multi-sport lifestyle for boys and girls, ages 7-18. “Although triathlon is one of the fastest growing youth sports in the United States, it is not as well known in South Florida,” said Coach Maria Supik, who has Bachelor’s degree in Exercise and Sports Science from the University of Florida. “Running, biking and swimming are three sports that most kids do well. With several new local races, it is a great time for kids to get involved.” The triathlon season runs from March to September. Most of the races feature the familiar swim-bike-run format, but the distances are much shorter than in adult races. “Most kids can finish a triathlon, as long as they have the desire,” said Supik. “If they can run, bike and swim, they can enter. They do not have to be super athletes to participate in a triathlon. The more they train, the better they get.” The athletes in the group represent every body type and fitness level, and each one has a different race goal. Some just want to finish, while others are trying to set a new personal record or win the whole race. Most live in South Broward, but some come from as far as Miami. As they compete in local, regional and national youth triathlons, they meet other athletes interested in the sport. “In most team sports, the best players get the most playing time,” said Supik. “In triathlons, everyone has the same opportunity to compete. No one is ever left out.” Supik coaches the kids twice a week. The training program, which is adapted for youth, includes running and biking at Brian Piccolo Park, as well

t is one of any parent’s worst nightmares. It is late in the evening and your child is on the baseball diamond. He slides into home and collides with another player. His enthusiasm and desire to give it his all resulted in an injury to his leg. What do you do? It is after hours and the emergency room will only be able to splint your son and send him home, possibly in pain. You will need to wait until tomorrow – or later – to see your physician or possibly an orthopedic doctor. This was your only option in this scenario, until now. Now, families in Western Broward have another option, OrthoNOW® Orthopedic Urgent Care Center. OrthoNOW® is a revolutionary new concept in health care offering patients a money and time-saving alternative for orthopedic and sports injuries by allowing for emergency access to orthopedic specialists. The primary focus of the clinic, which is located at the intersection of Griffin Road and Volunteer Road in the Regency Square Shopping Center, is assessment and treatment of a range of orthopedic and sports medicine injuries on a walk-in basis. These injuries include anything related to the foot, ankle, knee, hip, wrist, elbow, shoulder and spine, in addition to concussion related injuries. OrthoNOW® boasts a team of orthopedic specialists who treat broken bones, sprains, torn ligaments and muscles, cuts, sports and workers compensation injuries. The OrthoNOW® injuries center in Broward, which is part of a national network of OrthoNOW® centers, is equipped with full imaging equipment and offers the latest techniques in surgical and non-surgical treatments by a team of physicians,

orthopedic surgeons and orthopedic specialized ancillary providers. The center has an in-house digital X-ray, ARPwave for pain management and provides follow up care and rehabilitation. OrthoNOW sees and treats children as young as 2 years of age and adults until 100+. This specialized facility encourages both health and wellness to the community through new and cutting edge technologies. In addition to start to finish orthopedic care, OrthoNOW® is the first practice to introduce the exclusive ARPwave Neuro Therapy pain treatment to the general public. Previously, ARPwave Neuro Therapy, which is the most advanced neuro-therapy treatment solution in the world, was only available to celebrities and professional athletes. This treatment dramatically alleviates acute and chronic pain and expedites recovery time from surgery. Brian J. Cross, DO, Medical Director OrthoNOW® Weston, whom also serves as director of orthopedic trauma services at Broward Health Medical Center, remarked “OrthoNOW® Weston provides our community with technologies and treatments that save them money and time. There are more than 300 new urgent care clinics opening each year, however, this center represents the newest solution to orthopedic injuries in the Weston/Davie area and we’re proud to serve this community.” OrthoNOW® Weston is located at 4825 SW 148th Ave, Davie, FL 33330 and is open 7 days a week. Most major insurance is accepted including Medicare. For more information about OrthoNOW® and the services provided call 954-802-6763 or visit: www.orthonowcare.com/weston.

group of Weston children are proving that you are never too young to volunteer. As they reach out to sick children at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, they are learning how good it feels to make a difference in someone else’s life. It is classic example of kids helping kids. In 2011, nine-year-old Ike Grapin was treated at Joe DiMaggio for a tumor in his hip. His twin sisters, Amanda and Ilyssa, wanted to find a way to give back to the hospital, so they spent time completing art projects with the patients. Four years later, Ike and two of his friends are following in his sisters’ footsteps. It all started when Ike Grapin, 13; Jack Ross, 12; and Jackson Arnberg, 13, had to come up with an idea for a “Mitzvah” (good deed) project for their Bar Mitzvahs. Since they felt an affiliation with Joe DiMaggio, they decided to volunteer there. Initially, they only planned on a few visits to the hospital. They enjoyed it so much that they have made it an on-going project. The boys’ siblings have also joined the effort - Julia Ross, 11; Ben Ross, 15; Harrison Arnberg, 15 and Amanda and Ilyssa Grapin, who are now 16. Every month, they spend one hour with the patients at the hospital doing arts and crafts. They bring art supplies, such as stickers, glue, crayons, paint, sketch pads and other materials. They have made snowmen from foam pieces, mini snow globes, Valentine’s Day cards and more. Before the patients return to their rooms, they get to select a prize for their participation. Some of the prizes include toys, books, Legos, craft kits, and stuffed animals. Most months, the group size allows them to work one-on-one with the

patients and create special bonds. As they spend time together, they share stories about their lives and interests. Ike says that he likes to find out the patients’ favorite color and help them make something special with it. “Everyone benefits,” said Marci Grapin, Ike’s mother. “The patients love spending time with the kids and their parents get to take a break. Our kids see that they have the ability to make the sick children so happy just by working with them on something as simple as an art project. All of the patients leave with huge smiles on their faces.” Each of the kids has their own special reason for volunteering. Jack says that he loves talking to the patients and learning more about them. “These kids are going through rough times and need people to care about them,” said Jack. “Our time there makes things feel a little lighter. It feels good to take the time to make someone feel special and brighten their day. The parents tell us they look forward to our visits.” Jackson says he enjoys helping those who are less fortunate than he is. “It is the best feeling in the world to make the kids at the hospital smile,” said Jackson. “It is important to be a good citizen and help out in the community. It builds unity in our progressive and important generation.” Ike says that he can truly relate to the patients. “I was one of those kids in the hospital and I was not always happy,” said Ike. “When I see the kids smiling and enjoying their artwork, it makes me feel so happy that I just made a kid’s day. If I am not having a good day before I go, their smile always cheers me up.”

The third grade students created a project, which included a report of their family’s journey to America, a map, and flags of their family’s county of origin. Students were encouraged to be creative in the designing of their flags and maps. Through interviews of family members and online research, students gathered information. Many of the students had no idea about heir family’s heritage. The students got first hand information about how their family immigrated to the United States.

cultural celebration introduced the students to the cuisine of many different cultures that were represented in both classes. Students sampled food from all over the world. Some of the favorites were; Russian Latkes, Venezuelan Taquenos, Colombian Arepas, Middle Eastern Mixed Grill, and Chinese Eggrolls. The teachers were surprised to see their eight and nine year old students so eager to try and enjoy such a wide variety of foods. Students, teachers, parents, and Manatee Bay’s Principal, Mrs. DeVaughn and Assistant Principal, Mrs. Dumervil, shared a feast of multicultural dishes. This activity brought the classes closer together while celebrating diversity.

udy Nunez’s world opened up by attending Hampton University on a tennis scholarship and eventually graduating from Shorter College in Rome, GA. Later, he met and married his wife, a Special Education teacher. Rudy and his wife have had a 23 year love story and, as with any loving couple, she has encouraged Rudy to keep his dreams. Throughout his life, Rudy has worked with the special needs population and in 2014, found a way to use his talents to give back. Through a series of magnificent connections, Rudy was introduced to Michelle Leonardo, Program Coordinator of Special Olympics Broward County, who helped coordinate with Rudy’s program, “Pure Joy Tennis”. Currently, Rudy has 5-7 athletes training with him ranging in age from 14-22. Some have tennis experience, some have none, but all are welcome. Helping Rudy prepare the athletes for the upcoming County Games in March is Sagemont High School Junior, Nina Hernandez, who began playing tennis at age five. Nina thoroughly enjoys her time volunteering, “I am passionate about tennis and wanted to share with someone who might be able to benefit.” She explains she shares responsibilities while training the students and is happy to see them improving. When asked what her goals were for her athletes, she said, “To be able to do well in competition season and to have fun. It would be great if they could win.” Nina’s future is still a story to be written. She plans to major in Organizational and Industrial Psychology. As she reflects on the athletes and their attitude, she

he smell of coffee beans, the sound of spoken word poetry and the jam of the electric guitar resonated through the room. The Literary Club hosted its annual Coffee House event on January 23rd to raise money to publish the annual literary magazine, “Electric Ink.” Over 400 students attended the event in the Media Center to watch as students and teachers from the Bay performed slam poetry, prose or even sang original songs. “The Coffee House is one of our favorite events that we host every year,” said Joyce Seigel, literary magazine adviser. “In recent years it has gotten so popular, and I know it is something the students really look forward to.” As a part of Coffee House, performers from the Jason Taylor Foundation recited spoken word poetry for attendees. Known as the “Live Poet Society,” they shared personal works and received high praise from the audience. ““The Live Poet Society” poets were really talented and I think they definitely impressed the students at the Bay,” freshman Ryan Bush said. “It was cool that performers from outside of the school were able to showcase their talent.” At the event, restaurants and businesses in the community donated food to be served and merchandise to be auctioned off. Some of the benefactors included Burgerfi, Olive Garden, Starbucks and Einstein Brothers. At the end of the night, the club raised over $3,600 to go toward the publishing of the magazine. Editor-in-chief of “Electric Ink” and Literary Club president Juanita Castro said she was especially looking forward to the event because it would be the first time the school’s newly inaugurated Spoken Word Poetry Team would perform together. Castro said that to print “Electric Ink” it costs about $3,000 due to the abundance of color and high quality pages. The leftover money raised at Coffee House goes toward the funding of the event next year. “We only have one shot, one night a year to raise the money to print the magazine because we don’t have any other fundraisers,” she said. “Every year it is hectic, but everything that we do is with the passion of getting the art into the community.”

demonstrates she has clearly chosen the right path, “They never get down on themselves. When they miss, everyone is encouraging and says, ‘Good try.’” Pure Joy Tennis works in tandem with the Special Olympics organization. Periodically, Howard Chodak, Director of Tennis Development for Special Olympics Florida and USPTA Master Professional, visits the courts at Weston Tennis Center to speak to the parents, answer any questions they may have, and run drills with the players. In this visit, he explained the accommodations and ball technology used by the organization to encourage the players and best work with their abilities, such as slower balls and smaller court options. Linda Feldenkrais, mother of Erick Feldenkrais, feels the program has helped Erick outside of his athleticism. Proudly, she emphasized, “Tennis has helped Erick to focus more on tasks and also to socialize.” All around athlete Nicholas Villnueva’s mother feels a similar sentiment. Nicholas plays five sports along with tennis. “I feel that Nicholas is limited in general education sports, but here, in Special Olympics, we are right at home. Coach Rudy has known Nick since he was in a stroller. Now Nicholas is playing tennis with a coach who loves the game and love the kids even more!” The next step in these competitor’s journeys are the County games in March, followed by Area in April and then State level competition. For more information about Pure Joy Tennis, contact Coach Rudy Nunez at 954-258-3163.

Mrs. Seigel said planning the event took months of preparation and organizing in order to secure donations and organize the performers. But, despite the stress, she said the event came together nicely. “Even though the planning takes a lot of time, we have a beautiful affair and students have the opportunity to share their work, vocals and art,” she said. “It’s emotional and we have very bright students who have mastered language and get to share and reach people is just amazing.” History teacher Jim Wurster played guitar and sang one of his original songs. He said he loved the opportunity to play his music for students. Mr. Wurster is a professional musician and has 10 albums currently out. “It was nice to be able to perform at Coffee House and I think the kids really enjoyed the music,” he said. “I plan on hopefully performing again in the years to come.” Senior Alison Huang attended with friends Caterina Golner and Juan Federico Trigo. Huang said she was eager to go and see some of her past teachers perform and get a chance to hang out with friends in a relaxed environment. “Coffee House was a lot of fun, especially watching everyone showcase his or her talent,” she said. “I’m sad it is my last year because I would definitely plan on going again.”

or the fourth time in the past five years, Cypress Bay Lightning Boys Soccer team has been ranked the best in the state. After winning three consecutive state titles from 2011 to 2013, the Lightning recently returned from the 5A State Championship at Eastern Florida State College in Melbourne, where they were once again crowned state champions. The Lightning defeated Haines City 1-0 in the state semifinals and brought the title home with a 2-1 (4-1 PK) victory over West Orange in the finals. During the championship game, Cypress Bay and West Orange were tied at 1-1. After a scoreless overtime, the finals finished in penalty kicks. Cypress Bay made all four penalty kicks to win the game. Lightning Head Coach Colin Ilgner says that the two MVPs were goalie Juan Calle for saving the penalties, and co-captain and left back David Reyes for scoring a clinical equalizer. All of the team members received medals, rings and more. “West Orange was a very good team tactically and technically,” said Ilgner. “The game was a game of two halves. They had the better first half and we stepped up and had a great second half. I think the weather and the fact that both teams had tough games less than 24 hours before started to take a toll on the boys. It was a great final and both teams played well, but I believe we were the better team. I am happy the boys were clutch in the penalty phase of the game.” This was Ilgner’s first year coaching Cypress Bay’s boys’ soccer program after spending five years as head coach at Somerset Academy in Pembroke Pines. Ilgner had big shoes to fill, since former head coach John Ramos led the Lightning to three state titles in four years. He was determined to bring home the team’s fourth state championship and his first. “It was my goal to win the states,” said Ilgner. “I believed we could, but I don’t think the team or anyone else thought it could happen this year.” Although Ilgner’s first challenge was to replace eight starters from last year’s team, he says he was confident that there were enough talented, young players to fill the spots. The team trained hard throughout the year, even when it was cold or raining. They focused on learning to keep possession of the ball and attack and defend as a unit. The atmosphere was always very family-oriented.

“The boys worked hard and I’m happy for them because they deserved to be rewarded,” said Ilgner. “Coach Andre Waugh helped with the training. We also had full support from the school and the managers. Everyone involved gave 100 percent. The team went 25 games winning the state championship without being issued one red card. I commend the boys on their discipline and focus.” Ilgner says that some of the key players on the team were Luis Perez, David Reyes, Jake Fuhrman, Nicholas Arboleda, Brian Waizer and Franco Massacessi, but the entire squad stepped up when needed. Most of the seniors will play in college and are considering a variety of offers. Ilgner has already begun thinking about bringing home a fifth title for the school. He is expecting to lose approximately six starters next season, but he is not worried. “They will be missed, but we have a great set of juniors and freshmen coming up that should make a fantastic team next season,” said Ilgner. “As long as the players come out and are not banned by the academies, I believe we can make it to states again. Like last season, we will focus on working hard and playing well. We have a good support system, so if the boys put in the work everything will fall into place.” Junior Jake Fuhrman is one of three players that went to states twice (2013, 2015) with the Cypress Bay soccer team and won both times. “I knew since day one that we had enough talent to win a championship if we worked hard enough,’ said Jake, who plays centerfield. “It was rewarding to win, because I know how much work we put in. I think the main reason we were so successful this season was because we were all so close, like a family. We also had a new coach who believed in us from day one and created a positive atmosphere.” Senior Luis Perez has played for Cypress for two years. This was his first time winning a state championship. “I believed it was going to be harder than last year,” said Luis, center back and co-captain. “After a couple of weeks of training, I really thought we had a great chance of getting to states and winning it. It felt unreal to win, since last year we were not even able to make it to states.”

alcon Cove has its very own FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Lego League, composed of nine members and led by Ms. Dorsaneo. The Tactical Turtles team embodies all the core values of FLL. They really make it a point to work together, as shown at their first competition when they came together to successfully program their robot. This year, the theme of the competition was called “Learning Unleashed.” The team had to do a project to show and solve the problem. They created a board game to show how children, ages four through nine learned math. Our team has participated in three competitions, and made it to the regional competition, which is quite impressive for a first year team. Next year they hope to make it to states, as well as have more time for programming and working on the project portion of the challenge. The Tactical Turtles practiced for five and a half hours a week from September through January. The students program their Lego robots with EV3, exclusive to these types of robots. They

group of West Broward teens are learning first-hand what it means to make a difference in the community. As members of Shema Koleinu’s Mitzvah Makers’ group, they participate in monthly projects in an effort to reach out to those in need. “A central Jewish value is ‘tikkun olam’, or repairing the world, which means that it is our responsibility to take care of others,” said Cantor Debbi Ballard, founder of Shema Koleinu, an unaffiliated Jewish synagogue. “‘Mitzvah’ is the Hebrew word for ‘act of kindness.’ As Mitzvah Makers, the kids are establishing a lasting connection with community service and giving. The hope is that this will become a way of life for them.” In its third year, the Mitzvah Makers group currently has 24 members in eighth to twelfth grade. Most are from Weston and the surrounding communities. Each year, the group selects a board of directors and divides up the roles and responsibilities required to complete all of the projects. They receive volunteer hours for their participation. “In addition to helping others, the group provides an opportunity for them to make friends outside their social circles, develop leadership skills, and become role models for the younger kids,” said Ballard. At the beginning of the school year, members choose the monthly projects they want to work on from September to May. After each project, they talk about the impact they have had on someone else’s life. Some of the projects have included: • Made over 150 lunches and delivered them to the homeless. • Completed crafts with patients at the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. • Organized a Field Day at Children’s Harbor, a foster care organization in Pembroke Pines that keeps siblings together.

They brought sports equipment, a bounce house, pizza and more to treat the residents to a fun day. • Collected over 500 pairs of jeans to benefit homeless teens. • Provided packaged food and supplies for US troops around the world. • “Adopted” three children through JAFCO and fulfilled their wishes for the year. Jake Fuhrman, co-president, has been a Mitzvah Maker for the past two years. “I enjoy getting involved in the community and helping the less fortunate,” said Jake. “Helping others teaches you important values and to appreciate everything you have in your own life. Mitzvah Makers is a time for me to get away from school and social media, while helping others at the same time.” Jake says that his favorite project was the Children’s Harbor Carnival. “We set up a carnival for a day for all of the foster children to come and enjoy,” said Jake. “Since they don’t get much interaction with other kids, it’s fun to provide them with some fun and field events.” Justin Liebman, co-president, joined the group three years ago as a way to become more involved in the community. He has developed close friendships with many of the members. “Community service is important for kids to learn that there is more to life than just what they see,” said Justin. “Many people need help and learning how to help through Mitzvah Makers and other organizations is really productive.” Justin says that his favorite project is feeding the homeless. “It’s awe-inspiring for me to see how thankful people are for things as simple as a sandwich and a bag of chips,’ said Justin. “These are things we take for granted. It’s really cool to know that I can make such a positive difference in so many people’s lives.” For more information, call 954-646-1326 or send an email to debbi@shemakoleinu.org.

n February 13, 2015, the first annual Hoops for Heart at Tequesta Trace Middle School took place. During 5th and 6th hour, students gathered in the gym for a wonderful event. The Tequesta Trace male staff played against the boy’s basketball team. Teachers stayed after school to practice leading up to this event. Some of the students made signs to cheer on their favorite teachers at this sold out event. Students bought $10 shirts, sold through the Peer Counseling program. The shirt was the student’s ticket into the event. In all, five hundred and fifty-one shirts were sold raising $5,510. Mrs. Libby’s Art students, with the assistance of some peer counselors and office aides, spent two days in class creating a huge check

to present to the American Heart Association. The check was made out of three Science boards. This amount was more than any other school has donated in the county so far this year. One hundred percent of the profits went to the American Heart Association. Tequesta Trace Middle School was voted the number one school in the district for donations. Tequesta Trace Middle is very proud of this accomplishment. Instead of using the credits to get new P.E. equipment, they donated the money to a Title 1 elementary school in Broward County that is in need of new equipment. According to the school principal, Mr. Micensky, “The students really understood the greater good they were supporting…it was a life lesson.”

Grade by Grade Parent Guide for Elementary Homework By Dr. Raymond J. Huntington

H

omework is an essential part of learning, helping reinforce what is taught in the classroom. However, many parents are unsure exactly what their role in homework should be and how much homework to expect in each grade. While there is no widespread rule that applies to students and parents everywhere, here is a general guide as your child moves through elementary and middle school. Kindergarten – Homework in kindergarten is minimal and focused primarily on teaching students to follow directions, work independently and develop reading building blocks (such as letter sounds and combinations and sight words) and basic math skills. Your role: Let your child take the lead on any homework assignments, but be on hand for help. Read with your child every night. 1ST Grade – Practice worksheets reinforce concepts taught in the classroom and may come home nightly or weekly so your child can complete at a comfortable pace. The National Parent Teacher Association recommends no more than 20 minutes of homework per night in first grade, but most elementary teachers encourage nightly reading of 15-30 minutes in addition to other homework. Your role: Have your child attempt homework independently, but be available for questions and help. Continue to read to your child and have your child read to you, practicing reading strategies taught in class. 2ND Grade – By second grade, the goal is for your child to become a proficient reader. The teacher may provide a specific reading book for your child to read to you each night. Spelling will remain a focus, and you should continue to read together as well. Math worksheets will come home and may take 10-20 minutes to complete, focusing on explaining math concepts. Your role: Continue to help your child build independence as a reader and a student overall. 3RD Grade – By third grade, your third-grader should be capable of maintaining the homework routine without reminders from you. Nightly math homework should take 15-25 minutes and moves into multiplication, division and early geometry (in addition to

multi-digit addition and subtraction). Other homework, such as science or social studies projects, may take additional time. Your child should read for at least 20 minutes each night, both independently to him or herself and aloud. You may notice that reading expands into much more nonfiction and other texts. Reading to your child is still incredibly valuable. Your role: Continue to help your child build independence. Be supportive, but put your child in charge of completing homework. 4TH Grade – In fourth grade, many teachers transition into communicating primarily with students about homework and assignments. Teachers elevate the focus on time management and organizational skills. Your child must keep track of homework each day. Nightly math homework becomes more complex (covering geometric figures, introduction to decimals, fractions and percentages, and more) and should take 20-30 minutes, and other homework and projects will take additional time. Your child should read for at least 20 minutes each night. Your role: Continue to build independence and encourage your child’s responsibility in keeping track of homework assigned and upcoming projects. Be available for support. 5TH Grade – Fifth grade homework is meant to prepare students for middle school. Students are expected to do math (decimals, fractions, percentages, ratios and much more), maintain a planner/organizational system, study for quizzes and read every night. Projects give fifth-grade students an opportunity to research, plan and complete bigger tasks that take several nights or weeks. Your role: Uphold a consistent homework routine, check your child’s planner to ensure its proper and effective use, and be available for homework questions. Homework is a great way for you to stay apprised of what your child is learning in school, and it is also a big part of your child’s life as a student. If you are unsure about the extent of your role at homework time, talk to your child’s teacher. When homework is a family priority, your child benefits and becomes a more responsible, independent and successful student. About Huntington: Huntington is the tutoring and test prep leader. Its certified tutors provide individualized instruction in reading, phonics, writing, study skills, elementary and middle school math, Algebra through Calculus, Chemistry, and other sciences. robot to walk through a maze to save the school mascot. The robot will also need to be able to dance to music. “Robotics helps with critical thinking and problem solving,” said Hines. “They must figure out how to meet the challenge and find solutions when they have a problem.” The school plans to continue to add technology to the lab to support all of its STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) initiatives. Anabela Fernandes, 2nd grade gifted teacher, currently brings her class to the lab four to five days a week to participate in Tenmarks Math Madness, a six-week, online national math competition. Before that, her class visited the lab regularly to work on Iready, an educational program that provides remediation and enrichment in both reading and math. They also used the lab to research a report on important woman in history. “As educators, we want to tap into all learning styles,” said Fernandes. “Having this lab is very important, since it allows the children to work in yet another modality. Over the years, technology has become more prevalent and readily available to children. Schools are striving to provide children with opportunities that foster learning with up to date technology and the Imagineering lab has provided just that. The children are given a learning outlet that is fun, challenging, and with the times. They are using critical thinking and technology skills simultaneously.” Fernandes says the children love visiting the Imagineering Lab. “In the lab, students work and learn in a mode that is both familiar and intriguing to them,” said Fernandes. “They love using the computers and don’t consider it ‘work’ or learning. The Imagineering Lab is a wonderful resource for the children and a great addition to Everglades Elementary.”

very six days, students at Everglades Elementary visit the Imagineering Lab to take a break from their normal routine. They have an opportunity to research topics, play with robots, and participate in other activities, as they work on developing their critical thinking skills. “The Imagineering Lab combines two primary focused concepts in which children utilize their imagination, as well as their educational experience and tools to solve real world problems,” said Eliot Tillinger, principal. “Our goal is to go beyond educating students by inspiring them to take on new challenges, even if they think it’s impossible.” The school opened the lab at the beginning of the school year in response to the new Florida Standards, which have brought dramatic changes to teaching and learning in South Florida’s public schools. Some of these include more researchbased projects, more group work and fewer multiple choice tests. “With the new Florida Standards, students must apply higher order thinking skills,” said Susan Hines, media specialist. “Instead of just memorizing information, they must understand the concept behind it and how to apply it.” The new lab offers teachers a place to bring their students to complete research and work on group projects. In the past, they relied on eight mobile carts that rotated throughout the school. Now, classes have access to a classroom filled with 25 brand new desktop computers, as well as printers. The school also incorporated its robotics program into the lab. Fifth grade students meet after school to work on building and programming Lego Mindstorms robots to solve challenges. The students have been practicing for a contest tentatively scheduled in May, when they will compete against all of the other elementary schools in the Cypress Bay Zone. For this year’s competition, they will need to program a

ernon, now 24 and a force in the Miami’s defense, remembers his experience at the team’s youth football camp in 2003 like it just happened. It was then that Vernon decided for himself that football and not soccer was going to be his passion and he planned his future. “Where we have lunch now, that’s where I would eat lunch as a kid because that’s where we had the little snacks and stuff. Then they brought us into the team meeting room and we watched the season highlights of the Dolphins,” said Vernon, a defensive end who was chosen in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Dolphins out of the University of Miami. “What are the odds of me being in the team meeting room again as a Miami Dolphin?” If the resume Vernon put together for a high school project is any indication, he already was setting some favorable odds. His objective at the top of the page read, “To obtain a position in the National Football League.” Clearly a lofty goal to some at the time, but Vernon was serious. The fact that he was named the MVP of the Dolphins football camp in that summer of 2003 added credence to Vernon’s vision, and that was the third consecutive summer he participated. His father, Lascelles, was a soccer player back in his native Jamaica before an unfortunate accident ended his career in high school, so while initially he was saddened by his son’s choice to stop soccer for football, he had no doubt that Olivier would reach his goal. “Anything he puts his mind to, he always sees it through and he doesn’t like to lose,” Lascelles Vernon said. “He’s very competitive and that’s what he wanted to do since he was a kid. It was very exciting watching him at Dolphins camp and everyone was amazed at how fast he was and how much stamina he had. That came from soccer and he was excited to tour the facilities and meet the Dolphins players.” Bernadette Vernon proudly displays the jerseys her son wore all those years ago in Davie, including one with former Dolphins quarterback Jay Fiedler’s autograph on the back, among others. She also kept the autographed Dolphins football Olivier received for being named as

the camp’s MVP along with lots of photos of him and his friends practicing and playing. After watching her son excel at soccer as well as an art student, Bernadette also was caught a little off guard about his newfound passion for football. He pursued it at Miami American High School and used the skills he learned at Dolphins Camp to get a leg up on the competition. It was then that his mother realized football would be his calling. “He knew what he wanted to do from the time he was in middle school, and I saw how much fun he was having at that football camp,” said Bernadette, who got to watch Olivier play in the same stadium as the Dolphins with the Miami Hurricanes. “It’s incredible. Sometimes I have to pinch myself to remind me that it’s real, and that my son, who wrote on his resume that he was going to be in the NFL, is there now.” Vernon can laugh now about what he was like as a young camper taking instructions from former Dolphins and NFL players. Through the past few summers, he now experiences a role reversal as the student became the teacher. There is no doubt Vernon enjoys sharing his story with them. “When they ask me about what it was like, I enjoy telling them because kids look up to people like us at this level,” he said. “It is fun when I can just let them know that dreams can come true and that I was sitting right where they were when I was their age, dreaming about being here.” Oliver Vernon’s dream started at the Dolphins Academy football camps more than 10 years ago, sign up today and maybe your’s will start there as well. Mommy is Running on Empty…

Longing For Rest! By Jodi Cohen, MSEd; Director of Early Childhood; Temple Dor Dorim

Y

ou’ve heard of the rat race and many of you live it. Success in this race is measured by how much we can accomplish at warp speed defying the normal human constraints of time and energy. Although I am a participant in this race, my quest is different. My measure of success is my ability to just keep my head above water. I struggle in this race as I run it neck in neck, but miraculously, somehow, I stay in the race. I am the participant, a.k.a., “The Working Mom.” There are days when I long for the next pit stop where I can pause for a minute, stretch my legs and rest before charging on in the race. In reality, these pit stops are few and far between. There are times when I am just about to throw in the towel, when out of nowhere a pit stop pops up, like a mirage, and provides the opportunity to bring me back from the brink of insanity. I may stumble, but I continue to run the race. Why? I have no choice. Dropping out is not an option. What often looks like a smooth stretch, ends up with unexpected twists and turns that require incredible focus and discipline. Some days I feel like I hit every possible obstacle on the course. I make a wrong turn. I trip over a few rocks in my path that throw me off balance. Another participant, a.k.a., “guilt” tries to run me off track. Sometimes I feel the wind at my

back propelling me ahead, but more often I find myself struggling against the wind while running uphill. Those who challenge the difficulty of the race run by “The Working Mom,” must run the race in her shoes to experience the endurance it requires. It is all encompassing. It requires not only the endurance for a 9 to 5 but a 24/7 on-call position. Last minute projects, shopping lists, sports practice, preparing dinner and school lunches are just a few after hour obligations. Mom must also be a psychologist, teacher, playmate and romancer once she arrives home. There is no quitting when she grows tired. On most days, there is no finish line in sight, but she needs to continue running to reach it. Participation requires a constant source of energy even when the resources are depleted. No excuses. So even though today I am running on empty and longing for rest, I keep on running. Sometimes I look to the sides of the road and my family isn’t cheering me on. Somehow though, they seem to sense the times when I need it most and they start cheering. At these moments, I look at my children’s encouraging faces and see pride. I realize that I am teaching them that even though balancing life can be a struggle, we can all find the strength to continue on and accomplish anything we want to accomplish. I know that through example, I will pass this strength on to them. This acknowledgement gives meaning to my race, and provides me with the fuel to keep on running.
