Dear Readers, Greetings to all and delightful wishes for a Happy Holiday to you and your loved ones! This issue, I want to recognize our beloved Harvest Fest. I’d like to start by congratulating our friend and pioneer of philanthropy, Reneé Herman. 27 years ago, Reneé set out on a mission to help her community, including those who had fallen on less fortunate times and were in grave need of support from their friends and neighbors. That mission continues today. Well Done Reneé. And believe it or not, New Year’s resolutions are sure to follow this magical holiday season. I think that we should focus not merely on a single (or handful of goals), but rather devote our allegiance to becoming a more physically and mentally healthy community, with tolerance to our friends and neighbors and our common goals. Let’s life one another up in the spirit of the community. Be sure to check out all the great things our students and teachers are accomplishing; from sports awards, academic accolades and community service. We are so proud of our Weston schools. They truly are simply the best! Weston offers its residents so much. Concerts in the park sponsored by the city and the Weston Safety Expo. Families can come celebrate the arts day and so much more. Check out the Events Directory so you have all the details. Lastly, find all information you need for winter break camps, kids’ transportation services, spring sport sign ups, and our new professional services directory – for all kinds of services from health insurance, hobbies, real estate , and legal services. We have it all in our directory!!

My best to you,

Kim Kadel

Dear Weston Residents,

10

It has been an extremely constructive year, including the passage of our fiscal year 2020 budget with no increase in the City millage rate while maintaining the same high-quality services that our residents desire. I would like to thank my fellow Commissioners, our staff, and our contract partners for their hard work and dedication. There have been many accomplishments in the last 12 months, including: LED parking lot lighting pgrades; three Fire Station renovations; Police Station renovation; Indian Trace Park improvements; street light pole upgrades; Bonaventure Park design; Blatt Boulevard storm water retrofit; Tennis Center improvements; Bonaventure Fire Station design; and ITDD pump stations pump & gear rehabilitation. It was a busy and successful year. In November, over 180 public and private schools will participate in the Annual Harvest Drive that was initiated over 27 years ago by local volunteers, with Country Isles Elementary School as the distribution site; today there are 14 school distribution sites. Harvest Drive provides a complete Thanksgiving meal and a weeks-worth of grocery and personal necessities to 2,400 food insecure families in Broward County and provides another 500 families the opportunity to shop for free for gently worn clothing, shoes, toys and household items. Please do whatever you can do to help children help other children, so no child goes hungry. For more details, visit www.harvestdriveflorida.com. As winter bestows upon Florida, the weather we have all been waiting for and our events season goes into overdrive. The City, in conjunction with the Arts Council of Greater Weston, offers great events for families. These include monthly Moonlight Movies in the Park, magician and puppet shows at the Weston Community Center for children, Symphony of the Americas concerts – both ticketed and free; a Foreign Film Series, the free Weston Nights Outdoor Concert series, the Winter Safety Expo, Celebrate the Arts, Weston World Fest, the Royal Egg Hunt, and much more. I also look forward to seeing all Weston elementary students at the Mayor’s Get Fit Challenge Cup 1-Mile Health Walk on December 8th at Cypress Bay High School and again at the Mayors’ Chess Challenge on January 11th. Please look for details of these and other events on our City website at WestonFL.org/Events. For the holidays, we always stress vigilance to not leave valuables in sight in vehicles, and to always lock your car doors. Weston is a safe community, but whether you are running into the gym, dropping a child off at day care or pumping gas at the gas station, remember to – Lock it, Don’t Lose it. The same can be said for ensuring that your garage door is closed when you go to bed at night as that provides those who are up to no good the perfect invitation into your home. Lastly, we welcome our new City Manager, Don Decker, who officially took the helm on October 8th at 12 noon. Mr. Decker is no stranger to Weston, having started with the City in 2001 and served as Parks & Recreation Director with extensive knowledge of City operations, personnel and the community at large. We look forward to his leadership, his ideas, his innovation and balance. By balance, I believe Mr. Decker brings a personality and style to the position that the public will find welcoming. We look forward to working together to do great things for Weston. I, on behalf of the entire City Commission and staff, wish you and your families a safe, happy and healthy holiday season and New Year. Until next time…

Daniel J. Stermer

Mayor, City of Weston

hill-N Nitrogen Ice Cream is a truly unique custom made to order ice cream shop that uses liquid nitrogen as their not-to-secret ingredient. Whereas the traditional process uses the churn method, this shop flash freezes your ice cream, creating a smooth, fresh and truly flavorful frozen dessert. They make individual frozen treats using a variety of base options, including ice cream, yogurt, coconut milk (vegan) and sorbet. They take pride in offering a menu of fresh raw ingredients that are locally sourced when possible – even their cream and yogurt comes from local Florida cows! The process is truly what sets Chill-N apart from the competition. Making the ice cream fresh on-the-spot creates the creamiest, smoothest and freshest ice cream. With the flash-frozen liquid nitrogen method used, you can skip the freezer burn and ice crystals commonly seen on other ice creams and enjoy nothing but flavor. Choose a custom base, such as Nutella, coffee or dulce de leche,

add mix-n’s like cookie dough, Oreo cookies, hot fudge, sprinkles and more, and voila! The customer creates their very own custom ice cream flavor specially catered to their taste buds. Chill-N has 8 locations in Broward and Dade County and has begun franchising this year. “We enjoy being a part of the Weston Community and look forward to continuing to partner with the families, schools and businesses of Weston,” says Business Owner, Saby Gomez. She also encourages her friends and neighbors to contact the Weston store manager Marla González if you are interested in partnering with Chill-N for fundraising opportunities as well as sponsorships with local schools and churches. She adds, “We believe that community involvement is key, and what better way than enjoying our delicious ice cream!” For more information, call 954-384-8486 or visit chillnicecream.com. n thIn the fall of 1992, Renee Herman took it upon herself to organize a food drive at Country Isles Elementary that would provide a week’s worth of groceries to 20 Weston area families who were down on their luck. She rallied the students to help with neighborhood canned food drives and camped outside of Publix Supermarkets to accept donations. They succeeded and the 20 families in need were fed. But, she didn’t stop there. Twenty-seven years later, Renee is still on a mission to stamp out hunger and she oversees the year-round effort to help families in need through Harvest Drive. Unlike many other not for profit organizations, 100% of donations goes to local families in need! No one gets paid to run this organization,” Renee says. “We need more help. Hunger is a year round challenge.” According to FeedingAmerica.org, 18.2% of children in Broward County, roughly 73,950 are in a food insecurity situation. 36% of these families do not qualify for any state or federal food benefits. Therefore, in addition to the Thanksgiving Harvest Drive, they make an additional 1,000 Helping Hands Harvest Drive boxes full of 40 lbs. of non-perishable food that are given out to families in need from our local schools throughout the year. They also start each school year off by providing well-stuffed backpacks to nearly 300 students who cannot otherwise afford school supplies. This grass roots organization’s success is due to a partnership with the Broward County Public Schools. Over 200 public and private schools are

involved in the mission to collect enough food to feed over 2,400 families (approximately 10,000 people) throughout Broward County for a week at Thanksgiving time. Distribution sites are set up at 14 local schools, with Western High School being the largest. In addition to these sites, approximately 189 other schools will be taking donations that will then be divided up between the area distribution sites. Families with children in Broward County Schools are referred to the Harvest Drive by Broward County social workers as well as other local social service agencies based on their financial need. In addition to the weeks’ worth of groceries and a Thanksgiving Turkey and all the trimmings or a gift card, families are able to shop in the Harvest Drive’s makeshift stores for a variety of household items that have been donated. Volunteers work all year long collecting donations for the Harvest Drive Boutiques so that these families may find things they need at no cost to them. Western High School and Pompano Beach High School will be fully stocked with items such as new and gently used toys, clothes and

shoes, books and household items are most in need by these families. After decades of orchestrating and honing the details and operation of Harvest Drive, Renée has been blessed with several special people to assist her in her efforts. Susan Gross, Davi Leoniff, Harriet White, Amy Freund, Tanja Ylenius, Karen Navarrete, Holly Stracquadaine, all volunteer to share the responsibilities. “It takes thousands of people to make this happen each year. Organizations, Broward County Schools, and individuals have been instrumental in helping with donations and money to buy groceries,” said Renee. The compassion and dedication displayed each year by students who participate is inspirational. “What really makes this work, what is truly unique about Harvest Drive, is that it is the students and the schools who donate their time and effort with such enthusiasm to make this a reality,” she says. Many of the students volunteer every year and she has formed a lasting bond with them throughout her time organizing the

Harvest Drive. “Teaching children at a young age that their contributions can make a difference in the lives of others is what makes this project so rewarding,” Renee adds. Not only does this make the hard work and sacrifice pay off, it gives her hope for the future and inspires her to do even more. “What keeps me awake at night worrying is that the day before the families arrive that week before Thanksgiving, we will be short. We need monetary donations and gift cards so we can buy the items we are short on at the last minute. I cannot bear the thought that our local, neighborhood families will go hungry when so many individuals, businesses and organizations have so much to give,” she said.

Radio Control Hobbies for the Whole Family

aving a radio control hobby is fun for people of all ages and a great way to relieve stress, a creative outlet, an opportunity to learn new skills, meet new people. But what you probably didn’t know is that it can also have a wide variety of benefits for children, from enhancing their cognitive abilities to developing the social and emotional aspects of their lives. Playing with radio-controlled devices is very helpful for kids’ cognitive development. First, building RC cars, boats or planes, and maneuvering them through obstacles require the use of kids’ fine motor skills, which helps develop their hand-eye coordination and problem-solving abilities. Also, radio control devices teach kids about robotics, mechanics, building and designing, as well as mathematics, physics, and simple engineering dynamics around velocity and mass. Radio control hobbies are also great for getting kids to play outdoors, interact with

other children, and compete in a healthy way. You can find exciting new places, parks, fields and lagoons to explore when searching for the perfect place to play. There are also many RC clubs and gatherings on weekends and at the racetracks, which gives kids a way to make new friends and develop social skills. Even when playing with RC devices at home, kids can bond with siblings and parents, spending quality time together, which has a significant impact in kids’ emotional health. So, if you are now thinking about getting your kids into the exciting world of RC, Goat Hobbies is the place to go. Since we opened our first store in Florida in 2016, we are dedicated to sharing our love of RC with the community, and it is our goal to provide fun, innovative products and the best customer service. Visit us at any of our two locations, or call us for more information, and we will be happy to help you.

would like to specifically make sure that students are aware of the grades needed to get into the universities, as well as the costs associated with attending college. Students need to be aware of this before they are in high school, so they can start planning now in elementary school. It was decided that Bowen would take the lead on presenting information about the colleges on the morning announcements. He was also generous enough to want to give away some of the college paraphernalia he received. He is currently working with the school administrators to find a fair way to give away or raffle the college materials. Country Isles is grateful and proud of Bowen for helping CIE students gain information about colleges, so they can plan ahead for academic success. Country Isles Elementary is located at 2300 Country Isles Road. The main phone number is (754) 323-5950. Ms. Mindy Morgan is the school’s principal.

n the spring of 4th grade, Bowen Marzan from Country Isles Elementary embarked on a very important project that he felt would help kids at his school to begin to think about their future. “People say I am only 10 and I do not have to think about university yet. Worry about middle school they say.” However, Bowen feels like it is important for elementary school kids to have dreams of what universities they aspire to attend. He thinks that students having college dreams can help them persevere in school. To gain information about universities, Bowen embarked on a project where he was writing to universities introducing himself and explaining his desire to help his classmates. In his letter, he also requested more information for each university that he wrote. According to Bowen, he found a book in the library that helped him significantly. It was a book that listed U.S. universities. Bowen called this book a “goldmine.” After sending the letters to the colleges and universities, he waited in anticipation, hoping to receive responses. The responses that started pouring in over the summer were even better than he expected! According to Bowen, he received “A lot of packages – around 200!” In addition to colleges responding with information about their school, he also received t-shirts, banners, lanyards, hats, bracelets, large information packets, and a TON of college pencils! He received gear and information from most of the schools that he requested information from. Two colleges that he was excited about receiving a response from were Queens College and Notre Dame. To complete the mission of Bowen’s project “Early Knowledge for College,” he met with Country Isles Principal Mindy Morgan and Assistant Principal Kathy White to talk about how he could share the knowledge that he gained with other students. ou’ve seen several red flags, including a decline in grades and a poor report card. Maybe your child has asked you for homework help but you can tell your child has big skill gaps and you feel unequipped to help him or her close them. If you know your child could benefit from the help of a tutor, your next decision is what type of setting is going to be most effective: a one-to-one or group tutoring setting? AT HUNTINGTON, WE ARE PROPONENTS OF INDIVIDUALIZED TUTORING FOR STUDENTS FOR A VARIETY OF REASONS: • One-to-one tutoring programs are customized for each student’s needs. In a one-to-one tutoring session, the teacher determines what to cover based on the student’s specific needs and goals. The curriculum is designed to address each student’s challenges. Sessions are built specifically around the student. • Students can’t get lost in the crowd. Just like in a classroom with many students, students in a larger group tutoring session can fade into the background by avoiding asking questions or engaging the teacher. Not so in an individualized tutoring program. Students get the help they need because they are the sole focus. • The programs scale according to students’ growth. Because an individual tutoring session is designed around each student’s areas of weakness, there’s no risk of students getting left behind. Tutors will not move ahead to a new concept without ensuring their students master the essential building block skills first. • Students learn more than just school skills. A quality subject tutoring program focuses on more than the academic skills your child needs for success. At Huntington, for example, we strive to help students boost their self-esteem and turn around any negative feelings they might have about school. Our goal is to help students become

Tickets locations: - Weston Community Center, inside Weston Regional Park - Mia of London Jewelers, the Commons shopping center on Weston Road and Griffin Road Christy Blackford, Vice President of Education, notes, “The Weston Music Society is especially pleased to present this concert. Each year we provide to all the elementary schools a concert featuring the various sections of the orchestra. This gives them the opportunity to see and hear a full orchestra. They will also have the fun of watching a Cirque-like performance. Frankly, this performance will appeal as much to the grannies and grandpas as the grandkids and every age in between.” Following the concert is a Meet the Maestro reception where everyone is invited to enjoy refreshments and mingle with orchestra members and the acrobats. This opportunity to bring our community together at a world-class event is one of the cornerstones of the City and of the Music Society. We look forward to sharing this wonderful concert with you. motivated self-starters who are confident in their abilities. SIGNS IT’S TIME FOR TUTORING So, when should you call Huntington? When the grades have fallen, of course, but here are several other signs your child needs personal tutoring help: • Your child lacks study skills. Watch for sloppy or incomplete notes from class and a haphazard approach to nightly homework. Take note if your child seems to make things harder on him or herself by succumbing to distractions or failing to set up good habits during homework and studying. • Homework takes way too long. Tasks that you know should be quick take a long time because your child gets distracted or easily confused. Observe how your child spends his or her time and how long it takes to get going when he or she sits down to do work. • Your child doesn’t care. If your child once enjoyed school and now seems lazy and apathetic about the idea of learning, there might be something going on behind the scenes. There’s a reason for that lack of effort. You need to find out what it is. • Your child’s typical nightly routine: avoid. If procrastination and avoidance has become the nightly norm, your child is probably be struggling with school material. Avoidance is easier than slogging through something difficult or asking for help. Call 1-800 CAN LEARN to learn more about Huntington’s one-to-one student tutoring plans. We work with children of all ages to identify and target their areas of weakness so they can get back on track in school.

ndian Trace students are loving using the new playground thanks to the City of Weston, they also enjoy the many activities like jump rope, etc. The teachers got to show off their college colors on College Day as can be seen in the picture representing so many colleges from FSU, NSU, USF, UCF, Nova, University of Miami, North Texas, and of course UF. Go Gators! Go Noles! seemed to be heard all day. From the quiet media center, the children are enjoying the new flexible seating and finally on Sept 24th, the beginning of Peace Week, you can see the students drawing a sidewalk chalk

ach year, Manatee Bay Elementary votes on a theme to promote school spirit and student achievement. Kindness was overwhelmingly chosen by teachers and staff as the focus for this year. More than ever, educators are aware of the need to prioritize social and emotional learning and kindness plays an important role. According to Principal Devaughn, “This theme is easy for us because we are always described by others as such kind and generous school.” The famous quote from Jennifer Dukes Leakes, “In a World Where You Can Be Anything, Be Kind,” can be found on bulletin boards, classroom posters as well as on T-shirts in the school. School Counselor, Nichole Harriott, describes kindness as “Making everyone feel appreciated, loved and welcomed. Kindness means bringing sunshine to those who may be faced with difficult times. It’s encouraging those who may feel discouraged and by helping to spread joy throughout our community.” Kindness was embraced and promoted by teachers at the very beginning of the year with bulletin boards focused on the theme to help welcome students to their classrooms. In many classes, students were encouraged to write kindness cards, which were displayed in hallways. Mrs. Citelli’s third-grade class created a kindness tree. The children took great care to write kind messages on the leaves

tudents at Gator Run Elementary are having a blast exploring the world of science! Since school started in August, students have experienced multiple hands-on lessons that engaged them in the scientific learning process, while also expanding their understanding of the nature of science. In Kindergarten, students are investigating their five senses. They have been tasting, smelling, touching, looking, and listening to multiple items, like popcorn! Students have also completed nature and listening walks demonstrating what they’ve learned so far. In First Grade, students were introduced to the scientific process by participating in an apple science lab. After reading texts that corresponded to their standards, students worked together to see if an apple sinks or floats. Students also used their five senses to describe the apple. They are continuing their science unit this month by working on asking questions and forming hypothesis. In Second Grade, students are studying what plants need to grow and thrive. In connection with their literacy text, “Ugly Vegetables,” students planted their own vegetable plants and have been documenting the process of the plant life cycle. The students are so excited to watch their plants grow! In Third Grade, students are exploring matter. Using digital tools and interactive

and taped them onto the branches. They created the log and branches of the tree themselves. Mrs. Wolk’s and Mrs. Ramos’ fifth-grade classrooms implemented Random Acts of Kindness (RAOK) bulletin boards. When students complete a RAOK, they write their name and a short description of the act on a kindness square. Students track their deeds with individual kindness folders. A kindness greeting wave was initiated and is practiced during morning drop off and throughout the day. Kindness has also extended beyond the campus in order to help The Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian. Student Council organized donations from Manatee Bay families, which were delivered to a Bahamian relief organization. Additional activities are planned for the near future such as a kindness rock garden, Thanksgiving food collection, toy drive, and kindness challenges and acknowledgements for students. Teachers, staff, and students are excited to see how kindness will spread throughout the school this year. Manatee Bay believes when students are encouraged to put kindness into action then our school, as well as our world, will become a more peaceful place. Manatee Bay Elementary is located at 19200 Manatee Isles Drive. The main phone number is (754) 323-6450. Ms. Heather Hedman DeVaughn is the school’s principal.

websites like NearPod, students are able to learn more about solids, liquids and gasses, how matter can change from one state to the other and what causes these changes. In Fourth Grade, students worked together to dissect a flower while identifying the female and male parts of the plant. Students are currently learning about the life cycle of plants by observing Radish and Lima Bean seeds grow. In Fifth Grade, students have been diving deep into science concepts using science tools and hands on methods to better experience the perspective of a scientist. They have been actively exploring the scientific method and matter. The Skittles Method Lab, allowed students to analyze, graph data and observe the scientific process. Students have also learned more about matter while mixing soda and ice cream, to demonstrate their knowledge of the three states of matter. While reviewing mixtures and solutions, students had the ability to use science tools to separate difference substances and also created eatable mixtures. Completing these hands-on activities, using various science tools and collaborating with peers has given students the opportunity to better understand the science skills and standards. At Gator Run, we love making science engaging, meaningful and fun! Gator Run Elementary is located at 1101 Glades Parkway. The main phone number is (754) 323-5850. Mr. Keith Peters is the school’s principal.

SCHOOLS prevention. In addition, Angelo also wanted to hear from the students’ points of view, such what they would do if they were president during the 9/11 attack. She also asked them to always think about what decision they would have made and how they can prevent it today. Kids at Falcon Cove were not born at the time of September 11, which is why teachers feel it is important to review the events of 9/11 each year. Mr. Powers, a New Yorker himself, made a packet of 67 questions concerning the Twin Towers, terrorists, survivors, the Pentagon, flight crews, and victims. “The world changed on 9/11… everything from airport security to travel to everything we do today in some way, shape or fashion a result of 9/11, and I want them to see the impact it had on the world,” said the study hall teacher. Students in Mr. Powers’ and Mrs. Angelo’s classes think that it is strongly needed that the whole subject of September 11 should be talked about more. Falcon Cove Middle is located at 4251 Bonaventure Boulevard. The main phone number is (754) 323-3200. Mr. Steven Carruth is the school’s principal.

s the anniversary of 9/11 comes and goes, Falcon Cove educators teach and remember what happened on that tragic day when terrorists took control of airplanes and crashed them into the Twin Towers. This year, two Falcon Cove teachers, Mrs. Angelo and Mr. Powers, assigned projects summarizing the event that is described by President George W. Bush as, “The worst of human nature.” Students in the eighth-grade Cambridge Program were assigned a project by Mrs. Angelo whereas, students of Mr. Powers’ study hall received a Q and A task related to September 11. Mrs. Angelo created a project covering the events and effects of the largest act of terrorism in the U.S. Citizens everywhere would probably agree this is important for students to learn. Angelo believes, “If you don’t know our history you are doomed to repeat it,” a quote by George Santayana. Angelo told her students to work with their New York partner, to create a PowerPoint presentation. The PowerPoint contains a timeline, explaining who the terrorists were, who the heroes were, along with a slide that recalls the people’s response, security, and

A trip to the library can help your child build a lifelong love of books,

reading and learning. Libraries have books, movies, videogames and more on their shelves, and it doesn’t cost anything to borrow them from the library. You can also read and listen to books online for free with your library card, which is free for anyone who lives, works or goes to school in Broward County. Reading together sets an example for your child and shows that you believe reading is important. Books “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” – Dr. Seuss Reading to your child for at least 15 minutes every day, starting from birth, is important to your child’s healthy development and future success in school. Children who are read to regularly, show more activity in the parts of their brain that help with reading comprehension and understanding stories. Even the youngest baby loves being held and hearing the voice of their family members as they read a book aloud. Your local library has more books than any one person could afford to buy, and anyone can borrow the books for free. With so many books to choose from, it’s fun and easy for young children to discover new favorite stories. Librarians are dedicated to building diverse collections, so books can serve as windows (letting children see other cultures) and mirrors (so children see themselves reflected in the books they read). Children learn about different cultures, customs, religions and living situations in their neighborhood and around the world by reading books that reflect diversity. Librarians “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” – Mr. Rogers Libraries are more than just books; it’s the people inside the library who make it a welcoming space for children and families and connect them to the information they need. From the librarians who help your child choose their next favorite book, to the workers who help you check out books, people who choose to work in libraries are dedicated to helping. Most librarians have a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.); Youth Services (or Children’s) Librarians specialize in serving children and families. Stop by the Reference Desk at your local library and say hello! Storytime “You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child.” – Dr. Seuss Story times are more than entertaining – they help develop important pre-reading and early literacy skills while encouraging a lifelong love of books by singing, talking, reading and playing together. Librarians share their favorite stories and help families pick out books to read at home. Activities and free play at the end of story time encourages conversation, builds vocabulary and gives adults and children a chance to make new friends. Children tell us stories long before they learn to read. Story time gives them a place to learn the art of sharing stories and lets them know that their stories are important.

Play “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning.” - Fred Rogers Many libraries have an interactive play area with puzzles, puppets and props designed to encourage exploration and parent/child interaction. Play fosters children’s imaginations and encourages cooperation while developing early literacy skills. Play helps children express feelings, and allows children to think out loud about experiences. Playing with puppets helps children develop narrative skills and learn sequencing (stories happen in an order: first, next, last). Toy kitchens and plastic food promote healthy nutrition, help children learn about other cultures, give children new words (zucchini, eggplant) and encourage creativity. Puzzles improve hand-eye coordination and encourage children to think and solve problems. Through interactive play, children are encouraged to play together cooperatively and empowered to be responsible. These activities help build connections in your child’s brain, especially from birth to age 3. Through the shared experiences and resources found at the library, parents and caregivers can encourage their children to value reading and become lifelong learners. According to the latest research from the Kids & Family Reading Report, 95% of parents agree “every community needs to have a public library.” Have you visited your local library lately? Stop by, say hi to your librarians, and let us help you build your child’s love of books.
