It’s that time of year again and I want to wish you a happy holiday season. As we enter the season of “Thanks” and “Giving”, I have many reasons to be thankful this year. I’ve never been as excited to see our students return to school and participate in sports & activities as I have this year. As the most wonderful time of the year approaches, we have a great variety of holiday events happening in and around our city this coming season. Be sure to check our calendar in the Events section for a variety of fun fall & holiday events that have returned this year for you and your families to enjoy. There are also opportunities to give-back to the community and to engage in quality family time. There is no better gift you can give yourself than the joy you receive in giving to others. We feature Harvest Drive in this issue, a wonderful way to teach our youth the significance and importance of giving to others in need. Harvest Drive is an amazing organization where 100% of the donations received go towards feeding and clothing those in need in our neighboring communities within Broward County. There are opportunities to donate, volunteer and get involved in getting these donations into the hands of those in need. This is a perfect way to give back and help others during the season of Thanksgiving. In addition, there are plenty of great programs and activities for our youth and families alike to enjoy while school is out of session. There are many fun and educational programs available during Thanksgiving Break & Winter Break, including week-long camps, day camps & programs, sports and activities for your child(ren) to enjoy. If you’re looking for an activity for the whole family, pack a picnic lunch and visit a local city or county park. What better way to enjoy the cooler weather together as a family? For more events, sports, activities, happenings, health and recipes, sign up for our monthly e-news blast at www. sportsandactivities.com and select Plantation in the dropdown menu on our homepage. However you and your family celebrate the holidays, I wish you all the very best. Here’s to a happy, healthy and prosperous new year ahead! Cheers to you!

T

he holiday season is upon us. This is a special time to get together with family and friends and enjoy the simple pleasures the season brings. Fires pose a greater risk during the winter season. The members of the Plantation Fire Department want everyone to have an enjoyable holiday season, so here are a few tips from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to help keep everyone safe. • Choose holiday decorations that are flame resistant or flame retardant. • The holidays are a festive celebration of color and lights. Candles bring a sense of warmth to a home. But they also create a tremendous fire hazard. Candles are one of the leading causes of home fires. Modern technology offers us LED lights which simulate candlelight very well, are perfectly safe, and use very little energy. Spread them around and enjoy the atmosphere. • Replace string lights that may be broken or worn with new ones. Ensure that the lights are used properly, including whether they are for indoor or outdoor use. • A holiday tree really brightens a home, but remember to keep water in the bottom at all times. And, when the needles start to fall, it’s time to dispose of it. Dry holiday trees are highly combustible and burn very quickly. • Use only single extension cords, ensure they are not frayed or broken, do not run them under carpets, and do not overload circuits. Use multi-plug boxes with proper circuit breaker protection.

• While the holidays bring about good cheer and fellowship, a significant segment of our population may not feel so festive. The holiday season is one of the highest times of the year for suicides, particularly among the elderly. Keep an eye on all your loved ones. If something doesn’t seem right, reach out to them, and get help as soon as possible. We want everyone to enjoy this holiday season and make great memories for years to come. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or just the joy of the season, your friends and neighbors at the Plantation Fire Department wish you all a safe, happy, and festive holiday season. Are you ready to be leader in your community? Are you ready to challenge yourself? If you think you have what it takes to be a member of one of the most recognized and highly regarded fire service organizations in Florida then I invite you to Become One of Us. Visit www.plantation.org, give us a call at 954-797-2150 during regular business hours, or stop by. We hope to chat with you soon. In the meantime, stay safe. Stay well,

ovid-19 isn’t anything we are comfortable with, but by now we have established work-arounds, adjustments and a mentality to forge ahead as we try to live as normally as possible. That’s especially the case for those who love recreation – and those who provide the opportunities. The Plantation Parks and Recreation Department continues to work on its facilities and programs in order to serve our residents. “I can just say as a department that over the past year plus we take every week and month one at a time because of the circumstance,” Parks and Recreation Director Phil Goodrich said at a recent parks advisory board meeting. “Sometimes the rules and regulations would dictate a change to us. “We will do everything that we can to be as close to normal, but I don’t think normal is ever going to end up being normal ever again, but we will see.” Here are some updates: • Recreation programs: Essentially the programming and the operating of programs is back to normal but there are some safety and health protocols that are being kept in place. For example, indoor basketball was canceled because of concerns. • Pine Island Park update: The original target date to open new soccer fields was November, in time for recreation soccer season. However, it looks like it is going to run a little bit longer. The building is running behind schedule because nationwide, securing materials is difficult. At Pine Island Park, the holdup has been especially for doors and windows. • Special needs park plan: The city again is requesting for state money to build

a special needs park at Liberty Tree Park. The Florida legislature has approved a $250,000 appropriation the past two sessions, but Gov. Ron DeSantis vetoed the funding (once because of the Covid crisis). We’re going to try again this year, and our Tallahassee lobbyists indicate that this year the results could be different. The project also could gain favor from legislators because it shows a regional impact to the community, meaning that the features could draw specialneeds families from across central Broward County. • Central Park: New doors and windows have been installed at the multipurpose center building, and the roof was redone as well. Grant money paid for much of the work. The next thing is to do the design and remodel the actual structure. • Playground shade structures: The city council on Oct. 6 approved a bid to add structures specifically at Central Park, Park East Park and Camp Everglades at Volunteer Park. The plan is to eventually provide shade at all of our playgrounds. • Weather information: The parks system has acquired “Weather Bug,” a mobile service that allows residents to see if the park is open or if the threat of lightning has created a need to close the park. View real-time weather status updates for the Plantation Aquatic Complex, Central Park track, PAL Park (off of Northwest 70th Avenue) or Sunset Park (on Cleary Boulevard). Go to Plantation.org and navigate to the parks page for details. Get parks info via Twitter: @PlantationParks. Nick Sortal is a member of the Plantation City Council. Creating a Body Positive Household for Your Children A

Dr. Olivia Carelli & Dr. David Yudell

t around the age of five, children start to become aware of their body and how it is perceived by others. They begin to pick up clues on what is considered attractive or what they are “supposed” to look like to be accepted. Gradually, their body image becomes defined by gender expectations, opinions held by family and peers, and media they are exposed to. During these developmental years, children are particularly impressionable. These early experiences create the blueprint for how they will treat and talk about their bodies for the rest of their lives. Parents have the unique opportunity to help safeguard their child against low self-esteem, depression, and eating disorders. Here are some ways that parents can build a body positive household. 1. Help them challenge stereotypes. We live in a fatphobic society, which means there is a socially acceptable bias against overweight people. We assign character and personality traits to “fat” people without even speaking to them. We don’t really know anything about someone by looking at their weight— including how healthy they are! Teach your kids that weight is not a determinant of a person’s work ethic, intelligence, or worth, and that body diversity is a good thing. Besides, if we all ate, drank, and exercised the same way, we would all still look different. 2. Model body comfort. Calling ourselves “fat”, “ugly” or any other selfdeprecating word in front of our children communicates that we don’t like ourselves, and if they look like us, they are doing something wrong. Try to speak neutrally about your body and food. You are not “bad” for eating a cupcake and you are not “good” for only eating vegetables. Assigning morality to food can become confusing for children and encourage secretive eating. 3 Seek out a doctor’s advice if you are concerned. The CDC states children

should NOT be placed on a weight reduction diet without the consultation of a health care provider. Children are growing, and it is critical they have adequate nutrients. Encourage children to eat a balanced diet and participate in healthy movement but try not to tie either of these to shame. Studies repeatedly show that “fat-shaming,” can acause stress hormones to rise and contribute to binge eating. Research has found that 95 to 98% of attempts at losing weight ultimately fail, and 66% of dieters wind up gaining back more weight than they lost. This is because losing just 3% of one’s body weight can cause a 17% slowdown in metabolism. Losing weight is complicated and comes down to a lot more than self-restraint. 4. Emphasize your child’s non-physical accomplishments. It’s okay to compliment your child’s appearance (although not weight, preferably), but try to balance out these compliments with ones that focus on their character, personality, or intelligence. “You are going to change the world” goes farther and deeper than “You are so tiny!” As they age and their appearance inevitably changes, deeper compliments will mean more to them. 6. Give yourself grace. Give yourself grace if you have talked poorly about your body in front of your child or encouraged your child to go on a restrictive diet. We live in a society that heavily values appearance, and many of these messages may have been taught to us by our own parents. Every day is a new opportunity to change a small part of our behavior. Plus, children are resilient. They will appreciate you taking a new direction! For further information and support please contact us at 954-288-9393 or email DrYudell@DrYudell.com.

determined to excel with hard work and dedication. We begin each school day by reciting, The Pledge of Allegiance, The Power of Three Pledge, and our Tiger Affirmation… I am Positive, I am Prepared, I will always do my Best! Our parents, scholars and staff are all proud to be Plantation Tigers. Our school pride is echoed in every one of our principal’s voicemail messages, beginning with, “Hello Plantation Family, this is your Proud Principal, Mrs. Pitter. There are so many things happening at Plantation Elementary. The parents came out in large numbers for our Open House and Dad Take Your Child to School Day. Hispanic Heritage Month was amazing! Many students completed their research projects about Hispanic countries and about famous Hispanic people. We celebrated Hispanic Heritage in the last week in September. The staff wore their favorite country’s traditional colors and we enjoyed a pot luck of traditional Hispanic foods. We also held our Fall Harvest Drive which was very successful this year. We collected many food items that were donated. The excitement on campus continues as we prepare for the upcoming Magnet Open house and Museum Night on November 18th. As a STEM Museum Magnet School, we have not been able to have a Museum Night since Fall of 2019. We’ve missed so much during the pandemic, so we decided that it’s time for a “resurgence!” The chorus, musicians and dancers have started rehearsing for our Winter Show, our Debate Team is preparing for the upcoming district competitions and STEM special is preparing our students to “Think Like Engineers” by teaching the scholars the Engineering Design Process. Our teachers plan rigorous lessons for our scholars, and we have already started our school-wide after School “Tiger Tutoring”. Tiger Nation is determined to close the learning gap that has occurred during the last year or so. Geometry Friday is underway. Every Friday, math instruction is dedicated to measurement and geometry lessons. Scholars are also learning about geometry from the many posters that adorn the walls of each hallway. We appreciate every partner and parent who has joined the movement. We are proud of our staff and scholars for embracing the cultural shift. It’s Game On and it’s time to Level Up! Follow us on Facebook @PEMSTigers and Twitter @PETigers or visit www.browardschools.com/plantationelem for exciting updates and upcoming events at Plantation Elementary Sprouting STEM Museum Magnet School. e are proud to start the 2021-2022 school year with an “upward movement” theme. Teachers and staff have embraced the concept of catering to the whole student at Plantation High School. The students have transitioned back into a traditional classroom education experience and have adjusted well. Tropical Elementary is a neighborhood public school in Plantation that celebrated its 50th school year in 2019. Our teachers are passionate about teaching Literacy, Math, Science and Social Studies to our students. Our Toucans [students] are also taught how to be good citizens in their community. We recognize and celebrate many special days and/or months during the school year to honor the community. We began September by recognizing 911 heros & first responders. We recognized Hispanic Heritage month and Deaf Awareness month that are also held in September. Finally, we hosted a week-long Celebration of Peace which included dressing in colorful t-shirts on certain days, as we shared peaceful messages towards one-another. The celebration ended with a parade, and a beautifully crafted “Peace Pole” that was presented in the school’s butterfly garden, and was created by our Art teacher, Ms. Hodges.

level and we continue to support other students as they reach their full potential. One of Plantation High School’s teachers received the 2021 Oral History Association (OHA) Martha Ross Teaching Award! The students in our Aerospace program have been invited once again to take part in the NASA program where they compete against students from other schools nationwide. The fall and winter sports are in full swing including football, volleyball, cross country, swimming, and golf. Our athletes remain energetic and strive to represent our school at each practice, scrimmage, and game. Way to go Colonels! We’d like to thank the City of Plantation for its continued support. We look forward to implementing our “upward movement” theme and reaching our goals this year. Plantation High School is located at 6901 NW 16th Street, Plantation 33313 and can be reached at (754) 322-1850.

We are looking forward to celebrating the fall with events that honor literacy. “Read For The Record” is an event for our Pre-K and Kindergarten students. Each child will each have the opportunity to take home a copy of the storybook that is featured. Our school-wide “Character Book Parade” is next, where students and staff will dress up as their favorite book character. Our amazing PTA is sponsoring a family friendly “Fall Festival” at Seminole Park, which we are all looking forward to. Special events continue in November, by honoring our Veterans with a special luncheon in our festively decorated cafeteria. We will continue to give thanks for our families, friends, and for our communities throughout November in honor of Thanksgiving. We encourage our students to take part in their community and in our Tropical family community at school. Our goal is to nurture our students towards becoming successful, well-rounded citizens. We are proud of all our Tropical Toucans past and present. Tropical Elementary is located at 1500 SW 66th Avenue, Plantation 33317 and can be reached at (754) 323-7750.

SCHOOLS work. Set high but achievable expectations. Express confidence in your child. Remind them to view learning as continuous so that they develop a growth mindset (rather than a fixed mindset). And ask their teachers for suggestions on how to reestablish good habits. Focus on time management. For many students, the chaos of last school year led to many bad habits. Get your child back on track with a few best practices: planner use, planning out every homework session so that they minimize wasted time, good homework routines and the use of timers and reminders. This keeps your child on track and deters procrastination. It can also help with the child who avoids homework by simplifying what they have to do. Understandably, many children have experienced negative feelings about school in the last year and a half. This coming school year is likely to be a year of refocusing and rebuilding. If your child seemed unmotivated at the end of the last school year and their grades showed the same, call Huntington. We can investigate the problem and identify exactly what is going on, then develop a customized program of instruction. Our approach is effective and will help your student turn things around quickly! Call 1-800 CAN LEARN today.

he pandemic took a toll on many students and the current reality is many who have fallen behind and lost motivation. Falling grades are problematic, but an even bigger issue is when your child seems uninterested in turning things around. What can you do to help your child who seems apathetic about school and whose As have dwindled to Cs? Here are several tips: Have an open conversation. Without judgment or frustration, talk with your child about what they’re feeling. When did problems start? What subjects have been especially difficult? Let your child know that you want them to find success in school, but more importantly, you want them to feel good about themselves going into this new year. Discuss the importance of effort. Sometimes, school is difficult. This past year proved that things can change suddenly, and for many students, that’s not ideal. Your child needs the reminder that hard things require significant effort. Not every subject comes easy and your child might not always like what they learn. But in the end, the achievement is worth the struggle. Tell your child to take pride in their accomplishments. Make sure your child is challenged. Remote learning was fraught with problems and led to not only a loss of skills for many students, but also a loss of interest. As you head into this new school year, make sure your child spends time setting goals and laying out the steps to achieve those goals. Talk about what aspects of the school year are exciting and what they are hoping to learn and do during this new year. Sometimes, a little effort toward thinking about these things helps students refocus. Work to rebuild their academic stamina. With many students learning remotely for much or all of last school year, chances are high that your child might have lost some of their fortitude to study and persist through challenging school

ew River Middle School has been offering a Marine Science Magnet Program for over 20 years. Our school has been recognized by the Magnet Schools of America as a Nationally Certified Magnet School that includes a School of Distinction since 2015. New River Middle School added a second magnet program, iCAN (Integrated Career and Academic Networks) three years ago in 2017. The iCAN Magnet Program has given our students the opportunity to explore various academic and career paths through their academy course electives, in addition to the program’s core curriculum. The iCAN magnet program encompasses four different academies: The Marine & Biomedical Sciences Academy; The Arts & Humanities Academy; The Engineering & Design Academy; and The Business, Finance, & Entrepreneurship Academy. Each academy includes various course electives such as debate, band, engineering, entrepreneurship, forensics, broadcasting, marine science, and many others that are available for the students to choose from. The goal of each Magnet program, along with our standard curriculum courses are to provide high-quality learning opportunities for our students with an emphasis on marine education and its application in the real world through hands-on learning and field experiences. We strive to infuse an academic curriculum with a marine focus on conservation, awareness, and stewardship into all of the courses, while exposing

our students to a variety of academic and career paths. New River Middle School allows students to explore all the academies’ opportunities during their three years in middle school. Students learn about future careers that allow them to engage with their community. Engaging in the community starts in our own backyard. Our school participated in an International Coastal Cleanup this September with Mission Possible: Clean our Beach! We had over 480 volunteers and collected nearly 400 pounds of trash! We kicked off our Project Based Learning (PBL) engaging in taking care of our environment and addressing the issues of marine pollution through Mission Possible: Marine Plastics/Pollution. The students & faculty had a fun time while supporting a great cause. to organize a food drive at Country Isles Elementary that would provide a week’s worth of groceries to 20 Weston area families who were down on their luck. She rallied the students to help with neighborhood canned food drives and camped outside of Publix Supermarkets to accept donations. They succeeded and the 20 families in need were fed. But, she didn’t stop there. Twenty-nine years later, Renee is still on a mission to stamp out hunger and she oversees the yearround effort to help families in need through Harvest Drive. Unlike many other not for profit organizations, 100% of donations goes to local families in need! No one gets paid to run this organization,” Renee says. “We need more help. Hunger is a year round challenge.” This grass roots organization’s success is due to a partnership with the Broward County Public Schools. Over 185 public and private schools are involved in the mission to collect enough food to feed over 8,900 families (approximately 27,000 people) throughout Broward County for a week at Thanksgiving time and beyond. Distribution

sites are set up at 14 local schools, with Western High School being the largest. In addition to these sites, approximately 189 other schools will be taking donations that will then be divided up between the area distribution sites.

Here is how you can say, “YES, I want to help!” • Host a Neighborhood Food Drive to collect nonperishables and things from the list below. • Donate whatever amount of money (gift cards are encouraged as well) and non-perishable food you are able to give. • Donate food for our volunteers on Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving. • Donate toothbrushes, toothpaste, toiletries, clothes, books and toys. • Help sort and pack during Harvest Days at the different distribution sites (visit www.harvestdriveflorida.com for schedule). • Spread the word!

SCHOOLS morning announcements. Each student completed a research project about Deaf celebrities and Deaf history. A bulletin board was displayed in the school cafeteria to share Deaf culture with all the students and staff. Deaf culture includes much more than sign language. The culture consists of Deaf art, Deaf jokes, and Deaf theater, just to name a few. September was a great month for our DHH students to show off their accomplishments. A popular saying in the Deaf community is that Deaf people can do anything except hear (which is a common misconception as some of our students are able to hear) Our students are very involved in all areas at school. Some of our students participate in safety patrol and debate. Our DHH students have not only participated in district-wide debate tournaments, the students have also won medals as well! We are so proud of their continuous accomplishments and welcome every opportunity to showcase their achievements! If you’re interested in learning more about American Sign Language, check out our YouTube page: Peters Elementary DHH. Videos we have posted are available on our channel that are both educational and fun! Peters Elementary is located at 851 NW 68th Avenue in Plantation 33317 and may be reached at (754) 322-7900.

id you know that over 5% of the world’s population is Deaf or Hard of Hearing (DHH)? That’s over 430 million people world-wide! Two to Three children per thousand, are born deaf or hard of hearing. Broward county has one of the largest DHH student populations in Florida. Peters Elementary School is extremely lucky and proud to have DHH students in attendance that are learning in a total communications setting! Our DHH students use various modes of communication, including American Sign Language and English. We have five fantastic DHH specialty teachers teaching about 40 DHH students in pre-k to fifth grade. American Sign Language (ASL) is a beautiful language used by the deaf community to communicate. ASL consists of signing by hand gestures, body language, and facial expressions. Our DHH students use ASL throughout the day to communicate with both their DHH and nonDHH peers! We are lucky to have wonderful interpreters who work hard every day to facilitate communication for our students or anyone who does not understand ASL. Peters Elementary’s students and staff are excited to learn ASL! Many of our DHH students are excited to own their language and are willing to teach anyone who’s interested in learning! September was a very important month for our DHH students at Peters Elementary because it was Deaf Awareness Month. The students shared facts about being Deaf during the daily
