Dear Readers,

Welcome Summer! Summertime has always been my most favorite time of year. It’s a time for relaxed schedules, long lazy summer days and starry summer nights. I had always enjoyed family time during summer vacation as a child. I so enjoyed those long summer days and breezy summer nights. Our summer issue has it all! From day camps for preschoolers to teens, sleep-away camps and local city programs, there’s something great for all kids! Maybe your child would like to take a new class or lesson this summer and try something new. It’s a great time to learn a new skill, or try a new sport, and if you have older kids, maybe they’d like to volunteer or become a camp counselor this year. The possibilities are endless. Page through the summer camp section to find the perfect program for your child and be sure to check the directory for new classes and programs, too! Whatever you choose to do this summer we hope it’s enriching, exciting, and fosters new interests. Summer camp provides a great way to create fun memories and make new friends! Dear Plantation Residents,

8

Welcome to the summer season! It’s a time for making memories with family vacations, backyard barbeques, reunions, fireworks, and hours spent by the pool. The City of Plantation has an exciting summer planned for you to help make it one for the books! Our Parks and Recreation Department has safe, fun, sporty, and adventurous day camp programs available for children ages 3-14. Our staff has planned an exciting summer for your kids. The City also offers many recreational programs and activities like art classes, Zumba, piano lessons, and more that can be found in our Recreation Quarterly magazine and right here in the pages ahead. This summer the Plantation Preserve Golf Course and Club will host a Mother’s Day brunch in May and Father’s Day brunch in June. The Plantation Community Center will once again offer their “Mothers are So Sweet” and “Gaming with Dad” programs. Also, in May, we will honor those who have passed while serving in the U.S. armed forces at our Memorial Day service on May 30 at Veterans Park. We invite you to join us for our Independence Day Celebration on Monday, July 4. We will kick off the day with our traditional parade down Broward Boulevard ending at City Hall. Later, the fun will continue at Plantation Central Park with a concert and fireworks. On Saturday, July 23, a Back-to-School Barbeque will be held at the Jim Ward Community Center featuring music, activities, free food, and schools supplies. The theme of this year’s Summer Reading Program at the Helen B. Hoffman Plantation Library (temporarily located at Deicke Auditorium) is “Oceans of Possibilities.” There will be story times and activities specifically for early literacy, young children, and tweens. Reading 4 to 6 books over the summer has the potential to prevent a decline in reading achievement scores from the spring to the fall – it’s fun and a great way to avoid the “summer slide” so many students experience during the summer break. The Summer Reading Program kicks off Saturday, June 11, and ends Saturday, July 30 – so make sure to have an active library card. The library also offers community service hours through the Adopt-A-Shelf program for middle and high school students. Details of all events can be found on the City’s calendar at www.plantation.org and our monthly e-newsletter the Plantation Now! I wish you all a happy and safe summer!

Sincerely,

Mayor Lynn Stoner City of Plantation

More broadly, “the Corporation shall endeavor to support the City of Plantation Parks & Recreation Department and the City of Plantation’s recreation programs, community events, and parks and facilities. The Corporation shall support the City of Plantation Parks & Recreation Department in its work to preserve, protect, improve, and enhance the parkland and recreational opportunities in Plantation for current and future generations.” Reinstein, an attorney and mediator, is the chair. Others on the board are secretary Samantha Rauth Fitzgerald, treasurer Guy Strum, and director Kevin Sobolewski. Other municipalities also have support foundations and Reinstein reasoned that such an organization could help our city’s robust parks and recreation operation. Louis has emphasized that the foundation’s goal is not to take the place of the City’s Parks & Rec Department but to help fast track projects that may otherwise be on a long waitlist and to just provide another avenue for citizens to contribute to and better our great green space in Plantation. While the foundation is its own distinct entity, Reinstein and others have been working with Parks and Recreation Director Phil Goodrich and Assistant Parks Director Patricia O’Toole since last year. In fact, Mr. Goodrich was the one that urged Reinstein to create the foundation. Goodrich also made the very first donation to the foundation. The foundation was formally created Dec. 13, 2021. The foundation’s inaugural fund-raising golf tournament is at 1:30 p.m. on May 6 at Plantation Preserve. Cost is $135. Sign up on Eventbrite to play: https://www.eventbrite.com/.../plantation-parks-rec. The foundation also has sponsorships for individual holes ($150). t’s not your imagination: Plantation is becoming more artistic. The city’s Parks and Recreation Department is phasing in elements of Art in Public Places, which certainly brings a more playful and joyous vibe at random spots in Plantation. The first forays included murals on tennis practice walls, some venues at Liberty Tree Park and a fire hydrant painted like a Dalmatian, near the city’s fire department administration offices. (That’s appropriate!) City staff works with artists before they start, confirming that the art work is within the boundaries of taste and tone. Eventually, the artists could place a QR code into their work, so visitors could use their phones to learn more about the person behind the work. Many cities have similar art programs, and plans for making our city more artistic harken back to the Parks and Recreation Master Plan, a 258-page document reviewing every facet of our parks system. Research, public input and council comments helped formulate the master plan. The plan was finalized in February 2020 and Pages 156-163 are devoted to art. The mission statement reads: Public art is a visible expression of Plantation’s values. Art animates our public spaces, provides profound and memorable community experiences, and creates connections between neighbors, old and new residents, the city and the natural environment. Investment in creating meaningful public spaces can strengthen connections between residents and the City and connections between the neighborhoods of Plantation. Public art is part of Plantation’s road map and is a vital component of creating a community that future generations will be proud to call home. Read the entire master plan synopsis at https://www.plantation.org/home/ showpublisheddocument/1708 SUBHED: Parks foundation created. Plantation resident Louis Reinstein has led the creation of the non-profit Plantation Parks & Recreation Foundation, designed to support our city parks system.

re You Storm Ready? Well, it’s that time of year again. June 1st through November 30th is Hurricane season. During this time of year storm systems can form anywhere in the Atlantic and the Caribbean. Sometimes weather conditions are right for these storms to intensify and become tropical cyclones. And, occasionally tropical cyclones develop into hurricanes. Hurricanes are destructive and can be deadly. We have no way to control them. However, we can, with some accuracy, predict what is going to happen so we can prepare ourselves accordingly. Here are some reminders about how to weather storm season. Terms you should know: Watches and Warnings – A watch is posted when storm conditions are possible within 36-48 hours. Warnings are posted when conditions are expected within 24 hours. • Tropical Storm – A tropical storm is any storm system with sustained winds between 36 and 74 miles per hour. • Hurricane – A Hurricane is any storm system with winds in excess of 74 miles per hour. • Storm surge – Storm surge is an estimate of how much water will be pushed on land when the storm makes landfall. Heavy storm surge can flow for several miles inland. • Saffir-Simpson Scale –Hurricanes are categorized between 1 and 5 based upon sustained wind speeds. A detailed breakdown of the scale is available on our website www.plantation.org. Is your home storm ready? Will your home withstand storm force winds? If you’re not sure consult a structural engineer. Windows and doors are the weakest part of the home. Properly fitted storm shutters are essential to protect your home’s openings. If you are not familiar with how to put up storm shutters or don’t think you are capable of handling the job yourself, secure assistance now. Don’t wait until a storm is approaching. People are seriously injured or killed every year while putting up and taking down storm shutters.

Assemble your Emergency kit: An Emergency kit includes items you

will need for at least 72 hours following a storm. A complete list of necessary items is on our website at www.plantation.org A word about generators: If you’re planning on using a generator make sure you know how to operate it safely. This includes using properly rated extension cords and keeping it away from windows or doors to prevent carbon monoxide from entering your home. Carbon Monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can be lethal. If you have a generator a CO detector is a must. Should you evacuate? If your home is not secure, you live in a low-lying area, or live in a manufactured home consider evacuation during a storm. If you are evacuating you need a plan. Where will you go? What will you take? Someone outside the area should know your plan. If you have nowhere to go, shelters open prior to a storm. Shelters are neither comfortable nor convenient. They are areas of last refuge and you must bring all your own supplies including bedding, medications and convenience items. If you have special needs or pets, you need to pre-register with the special needs or pet-friendly shelters now. Stay connected: The City of Plantation provides a number of communication outlets designed to keep you informed of all emergency information related to Plantation residents. A list of information channels is available at www.plantation.org Summertime is fun time in Florida. We should enjoy it without worrying about storms. A little pre-season preparation and planning will make all the difference. Don’t wait for a Watch or Warning to be posted to begin your preparations. For more details on how to prepare go to our website at www.plantation.org or visit the FEMA preparedness website at Ready.gov.

Parenting Children with Disruptive Behaviors E

Dr. Bianca Howard & Dr. David Yudell

very parent faces externalizing behaviors (acts of disruption, aggression, defiance, or anti-social intent) at some point during childhood. Young children are developing the ability to regulate their emotions and impulses, while adolescents are caught between desiring autonomy and dependency on parental figures. Whether you are going through the “terrible twos”, or dealing with an adolescent who believes they know best, parents need to set clear expectations and boundaries allowing children to learn what is expected of them. There is not a “one size fits all” solution, however, research suggests techniques and parenting behaviors which can minimize maladaptive behaviors (tantrums, oppositional / defiant behaviors). Here are some evidenced-based approaches. The Parent-Child Relationship - When children are cooperative it is easier for caregivers to stay engaged in their life. Positive familial interactions foster secure attachments in children leading them to feel loved, safe, and more receptive to parenting behaviors. Warm and accepting parenting styles are consistent predictors of favorable developmental outcomes in children, whereas hostility and rejection predict unfavorable outcomes (Buschgens et al., 2010). Disruptive behaviors cause caregivers to react to their children negatively, leading to excessive punishment or increased disengaged / permissive styles. The question becomes, how does one maintain a healthy and supportive parent-child relationship during times of conflict? Create Clear Expectations - Enforce the strictest boundaries on aggressive and anti-social behavior such as acts which cause physical damage to property, bodily harm, and excessive verbal aggression. Address other types of misbehavior next, asking yourself which behaviors are most disruptive at home, school or to relationships. Children need a clear message on what behavior is not acceptable and will receive a consequence. If a consequence is given it must be followed through on. Consistency is more effective in creating behavior change than giving punitive consequences. It is helpful to predetermine consequences instead of reacting to their child’s behavior in the moment. This will help prevent communicating punishments that are out of proportion in reaction to the negative emotion you are experiencing yourself. Remember to communicate in a supportive way, refraining from using statements that are rejecting, punitive or forbidding. Pick your battles - Try focusing on 3-5 realistic targeted behaviors that you would like to see change. Focus on the behaviors you would like to see from your

child, reinforce and build confidence. Implement a reward system - It is important to reward children with encouraging, positive feedback, but sometimes children need a little more motivation. Would you go to work every day if the only compensation you received was positive praise from your boss? Reward systems help children to learn to think about their behaviors while weighing the costs (i.e., consequence) and benefits (i.e., rewards). It is important to note, the younger the child, the greater the need for immediate gratification and visuals. Remember it is essential to follow through on the agreed reward for each behavior. Talk with your children about their emotions and understand why they push back - Children need to be taught about their emotions to understand there is a connection between their emotions and their behavior. Teach your children ways they can soothe intense emotions such as anger, sadness, or jealousy so there is a greater chance of preventing the occurrence of disruptive behaviors (Dewar, 2020). It is important to explain the reasoning behind certain rules or boundaries and why they are beneficial. Engage in discussions about what is fair and reasonable and try to refrain from statements such as “because I said so” or “I’m the parent and you’re the child”, which do not allow for greater understanding of difference of opinions. Approaching conflict in this manner models effective conflict resolution skills and allows for children to feel heard and that their feelings matter. By creating clear expectations for children to follow, implementing rewards and consequences, as well as teaching children how to cope with their emotions will help decrease the occurrence of disruptive behaviors. By focusing on the overall emotional tone of the relationship, instead of on the details of every disruptive behavior, parents and caretakers are more likely to remain a positive influence with more ability to steer their children’s development over the long-term. When the precious 3–5-year-old Pre-K students walked into Ms.

36

Shurack’s class they did not know what amazing adventures awaited them. From safaris to under the sea, from the farm to an art show, the PreK students have been immersed in experiences and language that are beyond compare. Ms. Shurack is warm, caring, kindhearted, creative, and fun; everything a pre-school teacher should be and more. As she walks the children down the hall, she is seen playing her ukulele while the students are singing their favorite nursery rhyme songs. She also has the students’ serenade teachers for their birthdays and holidays. Wherever they walk, they leave a trail of smiles in their path. The students work hard on many skills from science experiments to real world math activities. One of the outstanding activities that Ms. Shurack did with her students was the art gallery. She collected the student’s artwork for most of the year and transformed her class into an art gallery where the students were the stars. The little artists, in their berets and smocks, were happy to give tours to

“W

hat do you want to be when you grow up?” That’s a question asked of children almost everywhere as they enter kindergarten. And often it’s not posed again until a student is ready to graduate high school. At Plantation Middle School, though, there’s an intermediary step, with activities and support to help children create a focus long before they are considering entering the workforce. The program is called “Jobs for Florida’s Graduates” (JFG) and the school held a ceremony last fall to help students get on their way. The students took pledges and Plantation Mayor Lynn Stoner and councilmember Nick Sortal read a proclamation from the city. JFG started at Plantation Middle in the spring of 2021, when the school was awarded a grant from the Florida Endowment Foundation for Florida’s Graduates for the Jobs for Florida’s Graduates (JFG) program. Plantation Middle is one of four Broward County middle schools awarded. JFG states its mission is to give students the tools they need to create and implement a plan so that they may maximize their future opportunities. The process is key to giving students a concrete plan to follow as they work their way through middle and high school. School officials call JFG an “elite program” with a maximum capacity of 60 students. The JFG program helps students successfully transition to the next grade and from middle to high school. Pamela Van Horn, who had served as the IB Magnet Coordinator at Plantation Middle for seven years, moved from that position to serve as what the JFG programs call a “Treasure Hunter/ Teacher,” guiding students while also looking outside the school systems for opportunities for the students. “JFG will give students an advantage that will set them apart from all other youth in today’s emerging work force through student-centered programs that help young people achieve their fullest potential,” she said. “I am proud to be able to deliver such a unique opportunity to

teachers, students and staff. They were so proud to show off their variety of work including watercolor, sculptures, self-portraits and mixed media projects. The culmination of the art exhibit was nothing short of incredible and an experience her students and school will not soon forget. Tropical Elementary, the Pre-k students, and families are tremendously lucky to have a gem like Ms. Shurack. Tropical Elementary is located at 1500 SW 66th Avenue in Plantation and can be reached at (754) 323-7750.

our students who truly have great promise to succeed both in school and on-the-job, leading to a productive and rewarding career.” At their initiation ceremony last fall and witnessed by their parents, students took pledges to fulfill the responsibilities of their office, which includes roles connecting with adults in the workplace and sharing their activities with the media. Each student then received a certificate and a handshake from Mayor Stoner. Students also stated the JFG tagline -- “Preparing today for a career tomorrow” -- and their motto -- “From classroom to careers.” After the meeting, students shared refreshments and the Career Vision Boards they created listing pathways into the workforce. They included careers such as Veterinary Medicine, FBI Agent, Fire Fighter, Actor, Singer, Football Player, and Hair Stylist to name a few. The students will attend college tours to local institutions, participate in live classroom visits from local business leaders who will discuss using leadership skills to successfully run local businesses and industries, and students will complete project-based learning activities around goal setting, marketing, and community impact. There also is a monthly plan of work where they are contributing to something greater than themselves. Topics so far have included Kindness Awareness, a Harvest Drive Collection, a Holiday Toys for Tots Drive, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Appreciation including a first ever “Mix It Up At Lunch Day”, and a Random Acts of Kindness Chain. JFG is yet another unique program offered at Plantation Middle, located at 6600 W. Sunrise Blvd. The school also has an International Baccalaureate program and added an Arabic language program this year after earning a grant for a full-time teacher. To schedule a tour or get more information, call 754-322-4100. Plantation Middle School is located at 6600 W. Sunrise Blvd., Plantation 33312.

Each year, Peters Elementary students in 2nd through 5th grades are able to attend weekly sessions at Plantation High School to build rockets. Mr. Vallone and his team of high school aerospace students teach and assist Peters Elementary students in building their own rockets that are ready for takeoff! Before building, students are taught about aerospace technology, rocket designs, available high school magnet programs, and even future STEM careers. Mr. Vallone has been working with rockets since 2003, continuously expanding his program into what it is today. His students at Plantation High School work with NASA and compete in yearly competitions around the country designing, testing, and launching rockets. These high school students use what they have learned in class to teach our elementary students how to create their own rockets over the next few sessions. Students in grades 2 & 3 build their own smaller rockets, and in grades 4 & 5 they work together in teams to design and test larger rockets. With the smaller rockets, students are given the rocket tube and fins that they need to sand down and glue on. Once it is assembled, the students put together the parachute that goes inside to make sure the rocket lands safely! With the

ummer is a welcome break for families, but it can cause problems when it comes to the long-term retention of academic skills and knowledge. Many experts report that summertime regression is a significant problem for students of all ages, with children losing several months’ worth of reading and math skills over break. Here’s the good news: it’s not as hard as you think to minimize the problem. Here are a few ways you can help your child avoid the summer slide: Read every day. A regular reading habit is a valuable part of a good bedtime routine anyway, but best of all, it is one of the easiest ways for your child to keep up those literacy skills. Make frequent visits to the library and encourage your child to get involved in any book clubs or summer reading programs offered. Let your child explore other formats in addition to books. The point is to get him or her reading. Review past work. It might take a little convincing, but even ten minutes a day spent looking over old worksheets, math problems, or other assignments is time well spent. This will help your child keep fresh on the skills learned last school year and ensure he or she is ready to pick up where the teacher left off when the fall semester begins. Plan writing activities. Have your child continue to strengthen those writing muscles by embracing fun activities like journaling, creative writing or even blogging. If those things don’t pique your child’s interest, consider weekly themes for inspiration. For example, one week’s theme might be favorite people, and each day children could write about a celebrity or professional athlete they admire, a friend who means a lot to them, or another role model.

he Children’s Services Council of Broward County wants to remind you - Don’t lose track of where your children are! Now more than ever, distractions can cause a tragedy in and around water. If you can’t find your child, check the water first! Remember the layers of protection: Install alarms on doors leading to water, place fencing around pools, learn CPR, and remember to always be Water Smart! Did you know drowning is the leading cause of injury and death of children ages 1 to 4 years old? The majority of children who drown in home pools were not expected to be in the water or even near the pool. Most children who drown in a home pool enter the water without the knowledge of their parent or caregiver. Children need capable, close and constant supervision, especially toddlers who may easily and quickly leave a safe, supervised area unnoticed. A dedicated “Water Watcher” can help save children from death or injury from drowning.

SIMPLE STEPS SAVES LIVES

48

The loss of a child is devastating to parents, siblings, grandparents, relatives and to a community. Drowning is almost always preventable by following these simple steps. Here are some guidelines to follow: 1. Parents need to talk to their child about water safety. “Don’t go near a pool without an adult.” This is the most important water safety conversation to have because it is so simple. 2. If you see someone struggling in the water, don’t jump in to help. Run and get an

W

hat does a group of retired teachers, therapists, pilots, mechanical engineers, authors, boy scout leaders, coaches and general contractors have in common? Well, they are all members of the Florida Citrus Model Train Society and they have an insatiable passion for model trains. The FCMTS group has set up five different layouts at the Plantation Historical Museum featuring a wide range of model railroad scales and gauges, from the smallest to the largest: N scale, HO scale, On30 scale, O scale and G scale. If this alphabet soup of model train lingo makes no sense to you, the club members would be happy to explain. In the two larger layouts on the display, the members have split the layouts into smaller modules and have each built a unique section from a 1950s burger joint with a waitress on roller skates, a replica of a New York City neighborhood, a farming community, a metropolis with traffic accidents and emergency personnel and so much more. The detail on each of the modules sometimes takes attention away from the model trains racing throughout the layouts. Every member can bring their own trains to run on the tracks, so most likely, a different train will be running every day. Some of the popular ones have been the O scale of the 1938 Santa Fe Blue Goose with its powder-blue finish and smoke rings, the On30 scale of Thomas the Tank and friends trains and the O scale of the Harry Potter Hogwarts Express train. The leader of this group, Dr. Ken Sargeant, created this non-profit organization back in 1999. The son of a Canadian Pacific Railway engineer, Dr. Sargeant excelled as a teacher, a school administrator and a coach in Kansas and South Florida. He started a student model train club at both Seminole Middle and South Plantation High schools. FCMTS has had its layouts at various venues in South Florida such as the Museum of Discovery

adult. And if you fall into a pool, don’t panic. Turn around, find the wall and climb out or yell for help. 3. Practice this skill in the pool with your child. Have the child practice water safety by wearing clothing in the water to experience the feeling.

Drowning Is Quick AND Silent

• Drowning occurs in as little as 2 minutes. • Irreversible brain damage occurs in as little as 4 minutes. • Most children who drown are out of sight for less than 5 minutes and are usually accompanied by one or both parents whom are nearby. • Most children that die are submerged for as little as 6-10 minutes. For more information about water safety, please visit cscbroward.org/safeswim and watersmartbroward.org.

and Science, Broward Mall (in the old RadioShack storefront) and at Broward County Libraries. The Florida Citrus Model Train Society is a very active club. Members are constantly adding to their modules or fixing trains, and they are so excited to show visitors their new additions. FCMTS member Rick has created his own town of Tarpon Bay set in 1912. He has built every single thing from scratch (not using any kits), from the train, to buildings, to the trees. Rick and his wife, Susan, have created a fun scavenger hunt for kids to find all the quirky elements he has hidden in his town. Try to find the octopus in the bait truck and the baby goat eating dynamite! Another member, Joe, is almost done with an amusement park layout. It has a monorail and a train, animated park rides, and familiar elements we have all probably seen somewhere in Orlando. While the kids of all ages enjoy the trains, adults can spend time reading the educational displays created by the Museum staff. Information about the people who built the railroad (former slaves, American Indians, and Irish immigrants) to the people who worked on trains (the Pullman porters). Train robbers, the Transcontinental Railroad and Women in the Train Industry are also on display. The Model Trains Exhibit will be on display at the Plantation Historical Museum until October 1, 2022. Open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00AM – 12:00PM and 1:00PM – 4:00PM. The Museum is closed on Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays. Admission is FREE. For more information, call 954-797-2722 or visit plantation.org/museum.
