CORAL SPRINGS PARKLAND

SPORTS & ACTIVITIES DIRECTORY (954) 803-2140 Office 1118 SW 7th Street

Boca Raton, FL 33486 www.sportsandactivities.com

Dear Readers,

The new year is off to a great start, spring is in the air and what a lovely time it is to live in South Florida. We are coming into my favorite time of year. The clocks spring ahead, the evenings are longer and we can enjoy the beautiful weather. It’s the perfect time for playing sports, attending events and enjoying activities outdoors in the fresh air.

It’s a new season for sports, and registrations are happening now. You can find them all in the Main Directory in the red-tabbed section. Spring Break is the week of March 24th for Broward County Public Schools, so be sure to page through our directories to find some great camp options to keep your kids engaged. You never know what hidden talent or passion will present itself in your children unless they have the opportunity to explore and try new things. It’s also the perfect time of year to challenge yourselves with new things…golf, pickle ball, volunteering, coaching, workout groups, or continuing education to take care of your own mental, physical and emotional health. Parents often spend so much time, money and energy on those they care for that they can sometimes forget about themselves.

Many families have made this area home because they know that Coral Springs and Parkland have some of the best schools in the state of Florida. Our schools offer not only innovative academic programs but competitive arts and performing opportunities as well. Please read the school articles to see all the wonderful programs, competitions and community service projects our schools and students are involved in. We have some of the most dedicated teachers, staff and principals around and we are grateful for all of their hard work.

The weather is fantastic, and events are in abundance this Spring, so get out to the parks and the venues with your family and friends and make some wonderful memories together. Remember, time is our most precious asset, we should all spend pursuing activities that bring us joy.

Thank you for your continued readership and patronage to our clients. Be sure to tell our advertisers you found them in Sports & Activities Directory.

Wishing you a happy, healthy spring!

My best to you,

Dear Parkland Residents,

When we come together, we are better, and we are stronger.

As a City, our sense of unity is ingrained in our culture, into who we are, and into the way we do life. The value we place on togetherness and connection is integral to our wellbeing and a playbook for how we continue to thrive.

February marks the seven-year anniversary of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School tragedy.

Through the vast and varied efforts of organizations and foundations that have been created to memorialize the 17 victims of this tragedy, positive changes have been made on the federal, state, and local levels regarding laws and policies that will ensure safety for us all—in the hopes that a similar horrific event is not repeated.

This month, as we commemorate the lives lost, we will continue to do so with a sense of direction and purpose that speaks to the tremendous work many in the community have done to memorialize the lives that were taken from us too soon.

The Parkland 17 Memorial Foundation is the manifestation of our vision to honor those lost in the tragedy. The memorial will be nestled in a serene 150acre preserve that borders Coral Springs and Parkland, an important union of two affected communities.

As Mayor of Parkland, and as the Treasurer of the Parkland 17 Memorial Foundation board, I am deeply grateful for the dedication and work of fellow board members, Michael Moser, Chairman; Tony Montalto, Vice Chairman; Joy Carter, Secretary; Alice Zendel Simon, Director; Theresa Brier, Director; and Bonnie Barnett, Director at Large.

On Friday, February 14, 2025, at the Amphitheatre at Pine Trails Park, we will hold the seven-year Commemoration event to honor and remember the 17 victims. Every year this event provides a humbling reminder of those who were taken and how our community bands together to honor them and comfort one another. We honor Alyssa Alhadeff, Scott Beigel, Martin Duque, Nicholas Dworet, Aaron Feis, Jaime Guttenberg, Chris Hixon, Luke Hoyer, Cara Loughran, Gina Montalto, Joaquin Oliver, Alaina Petty, Meadow Pollack, Helena Ramsay, Alex Schachter, Carmen Schentrup, and Peter Wang.

As a united community, the Parkland 17 Memorial will one day stand as a grand symbol of hope, unity, and most of all, love.

Your Parkland Mayor, Rich Walker

If you would like to share your thoughts or if you have questions or comments you would like to share, I would love to hear from you. I can be reached via e-mail at rwalker@cityofparkland.org or via cell phone at (973) 390-1453. I am frequently available monthly at Parkland businesses and love to talk with residents there. I encourage you to visit the City’s website, cityofparkland.org and click on the social media icon that you prefer, to ensure that you stay informed on events and helpful information.

Dear Coral Springs Citizens and Businesses, I hope 2025 is off to a good start for you and your children! I hope you have been taking advantage of our sports leagues and city events! Our City has so much to offer!

One of my favorite aspects of our City is the fact that we are so family oriented. My wife and I raised our five children here and now we have two grandchildren in Coral Springs and two that live in Coconut Creek. We have taken advantage of the soccer, basketball and baseball leagues and so many other amenities in our city.

One of my favorite amenities here are all of our pickleball courts. I typically play three or four times a week at Riverside and Cypress. There are so many friendly people that play, including many that are willing to help a new player learn the game.

In order to learn about all of our City events, please visit our website at www. CoralSprings.gov/events. I’m also open to host our youth to participate in our Mayor for the day program. If your child is interested, please email our City Commission liaison, Luwam Ghermay, at Lghermay@coralsprings.gov.

If you ever want to share an idea or concern with me, it’s best to email me at Sbrook@CoralSprings.gov. You can also call me at 954-4949872. I am honored to have recently been re-elected for my sixth term as Mayor! Thank you for your support. My grandchildren, Landon and Lucas, swore me in and did a great job!

Lastly, I want to wish you all a Happy Valentine’s Day. I hope you feel loved and appreciated!

Warmly,

FEBRUARY

Aswe embark on yet another new chapter in American history, with the re-election of President Donald Trump, we anticipate a continuation of the U.S.’s exceptional economic performance. Despite the global challenges posed by the pandemic, the U.S. has emerged as the only major economy to have returned to its pre-pandemic growth trajectory, solidifying its role as a key global demand driver.

In the coming year, there are several long-term secular trends that investors should keep an eye on, including de-globalization, de-dollarization, deregulation, decoupling, and de-population. While these trends are not yet reflected in market pricing, they present potential investment opportunities for those who stay ahead of the curve.

Under President Trump’s America First policy, we can expect more transactional approaches to resolving international conflicts, such as the Russia-Ukraine war and Middle East tensions. This approach may lead to more stable geopolitical relationships, creating a favorable environment for investment.

In terms of domestic policy, deregulation and government efficiency are reshaping the role of government, although reducing federal spending remains a significant challenge. The expiration of the TCJA’s personal tax cuts will present a critical test for fiscal policy.

The political landscape is also undergoing significant shifts, with the weakening of the political center and the rise of populist movements. While these changes may pose long-term risks to economic stability and growth, they also create opportunities for investors who are willing to adapt to the evolving political climate.

In the global arena, China may take a more aggressive stance in its foreign policy, leading to an increase in regionalization and the formation of trading blocs. The European Model is also facing a crisis, with Germany’s role as Europe’s economic powerhouse weakening and France

facing significant fiscal challenges.

Certain asset classes, such as emerging markets and ESG investing, may face headwinds under President Trump’s policies. However, deregulation and the growing appeal of illiquidity as a value proposition present opportunities for alternative assets like hedge funds, digital assets, and private credit.

In conclusion, while the coming year will undoubtedly present challenges, there are also many opportunities for investors who stay informed, adaptable, and committed to a balanced portfolio strategy. The traditional stocks/bonds/alternatives/cash investment approach remains a solid approach in the current market environment.

The COVID-19 pandemic changed the world. The aftermath ignited an increase in emotional dysregulation. Simultaneously, children are given internet accessible devices at earlier ages allowing for information delivery that they are not emotionally or intellectually ready to process. The result? Increasing levels of emotional concerns that are bubbling to the surface. As mental health professionals we have the ability to help children and their families navigate worries, build resilience, and regain their sense of safety. Early intervention with proper support, is crucial.

Why Are Children Feeling Anxious? The pandemic created tremendous uncertainty, from school closures to social isolation. Anxiety feels like an invisible cloud over children’s thoughts and emotions. It can show up as sleepless nights, nervousness around socializing, or reluctance to leave home. Most children do not have the words to describe their feelings. Their behavior, however, is a window into their functioning. Research shows that childhood anxiety has increased since the pandemic. A global study involving 80,000 youths found that the prevalence of anxiety symptoms doubled during this time, with approximately 20% of children and adolescents experiencing significant anxiety. Additionally, there has been a sharp rise in pediatric mental health, including depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and suicidal thoughts.

Anxiety looks different in children than it does in adults. Here are signs:

• Avoiding activities: Including missing school, avoiding friends, or quitting hobbies once enjoyed.

• Increased clinginess: Your child might want to stay close to you more than usual or express fear about being apart from you.

• Trouble sleeping: Anxious children might experience nightmares or difficulty falling asleep.

• Physical complaints: Stomachaches, headaches, or other physical symptoms are linked to anxiety.

• Acting out: Children might express their anxiety through irritability or tantrums, especially when overwhelmed by their feelings.

What Can Parents Do to Help? As a parent, you have the power to create an environment that supports your child’s emotional well-being. Here are steps to help your child manage anxiety:

• Normalize Their Feelings: Reassure your child that it is okay to feel anxious. Anxiety is a natural response to uncertainty, especially after significant changes.

• Provide a Stable Routine: Consistency is key. A predictable routine, from mealtimes to bedtimes, helps your child feel grounded and secure.

• Validate and Listen: Let your child express their feelings without judgment. Sometimes, just listening to their concerns can ease their worries.

• Encourage Gradual Exposure: If your child struggles with anxiety, help them take it step by step. Start with more minor, manageable situations before addressing more significant challenges.

• Model Calmness: Children learn by example, so they may feel inspired to do the same when you handle stress calmly. Show them how you manage stress through deep breathing, exercise, or relaxation.

When to Seek Professional Help: If your child’s anxiety is is preventing them from going to school, participating in activities, or enjoying life it is time to seek help from a psychologist. Therapy is highly effective in treating anxiety in children. A psychologist can help pinpoint the root causes of your child’s anxiety and work with them (and you!) on effective ways to manage it. The adventure does not stop on campus. Campers will explore exciting destinations through field trips to places like Zoo Miami, Butterfly World, and Rapids Water Park. We wish our Ram Families and the Coral Springs community a Happy New Year. We hope 2025 brings health and peace to everyone! The school year is flying by as we are already beginning the 3rd quarter. We have many upcoming exciting events planned, but let’s rewind and share some of the events that occurred during the 2nd quarter.

On October 25th, our students and staff walked in the character parade to display their awesome costumes. The families filled our parking lot areas to cheer and support their students. Later that evening, our PTO spearheaded an amazing Trunk-or-Treat event at the school. The students enjoyed a night of dancing, eating delicious foods, and receiving candies. The parents and staff were engaged in competition for the best decorated cars. It was a festive and exciting night for all participants.

In November, we invited the Veterans to our school. The students displayed their handmade decorative posters and U.S. flags as the Veterans and their families were greeted with an amazing parade. After the parade, they enjoyed a scrumptious breakfast. A big thank you to our PTO for providing the breakfast items.

November also had a bittersweet moment as we wished farewell to Donna Benson, our office manager and comforter to all! Donna served the Ram Fam for 25 years.

Donna began her time at Ramblewood as a substitute/interim substitute. She was the Office Manager for 20 years. She will be continuing the next chapter of her life as a loving grandmother, spending quality time with her 3 grandchildren. The Ram Fam appreciates everything that you’ve done, Donna. Your legacy will remain here forever!

In December, Ramblewood Middle School, our zone middle school, traveled our school with their talented band and chorus to perform holidays songs. Our students and staff were in awe at the talent level of the performers. Our 5th graders can’t wait to join these fantastic programs next school year!

Our vision to improve student achievement and our school grade remain our focus. Our faculty and staff continue to find innovative ways to help students meet and surpass their goals. The PM 2 assessments are fast approaching, therefore our efforts to assists the students to surpass their PM1 scores are at a maximum level. The parents have been doing an excellent job by ensuring their students are completing the daily reading and web-based program requirements at home. Their support has been beneficial for all!

Ramblewood Elementary is located at 8950 Shadowwood Blvd in Coral Springs. Their principal is Dacyany Ibarrondo. They can be reached at (754) 322-8150.

On January 28th, they will compete in their 5th debate of the year. The Environmental Club is preparing impactful projects for their upcoming Youth Climate Summit, promoting sustainability and leadership. Meanwhile, the Journalism Team launched the first annual American Revolution Video Contest, inspiring students to creatively explore history. Athletically, the Boys and Girls Volleyball Teams proudly earned the title of Division 1 Champions, showcasing teamwork and determination. On the basketball court, our teams continued to bring home district victories. Socially, the Raider community shined through initiatives like the “Holiday Giving Drive,” which supported over 50 families, and the “Cultural Unity Fair,” celebrating diversity on campus. As we move into the second half of the school year, Riverglades continues to be wild about learning while also developing our students as whole children, focusing on extracurricular events, service opportunities and special events.

On February 5th, Riverglades will begin collecting donations for SOS Children’s Village, Harvest Drive Pantry and the Canine Assisted Reading Program to mark the Day of Service and Love on February 14th. Each year, we are overwhelmed by the generosity of our families and look forward to making this year even bigger. Throughout the next few months, our Gators have several other events and activities to enjoy. In February, we have Class Pictures on 2/3-2/4, Kindergarten Round-up for new incoming students for the 2025-26 school year on 2/13, and the ever-popular Bingo Night on 2/19.

In March, we will have the Riverglades McTeacher’s Night at McDonalds on 3/5 and Publix Math Night on 3/19. Riverglades will be participating in the Parkland Days Parade on 3/8 and we invite all our families to join us with our float or to watch the parade. Field Days this year will be 3/18-3/20 as each class gets to enjoy games, sports and fun. Farmer Jay will also be returning to

Riverglades to continue to work with our students with the school’s garden with lessons aligned to science standards.

On April 10th, Riverglades will be celebrating our Stanley Cup Winning Florida Panthers with Panthers Night where our families can purchase tickets at our group rate and our students will have a chance at an on-the-ice slap shot. The Scholastic Book Fair will be 4/24-5/1. And one of our biggest event of the year, Creative Arts Night will be on 4/25 – come enjoy an Into the Sea themed evening of the arts where our students’ great work will be on display, and there will also be a Talent Show, lots of games, crafts, great food and entertainment. While the academic standards at Riverglades are very high, we encourage all our Gator families to get involved with as many activities and events as possible, as our administration and teachers strive to strengthen our community and develop our students into well-rounded kids of character. Anyone with a child at Riverglades is invited to join our PTA for more ways to get involved and volunteer. As the Education Officer for the City of Coral Springs, I am honored to share the ongoing efforts and initiatives that aim to strengthen our city and its schools. Sharing Information Via Quarterly Meetings

Did you know? We meet regularly with local school principals and PTA leaders to collaborate on initiatives that enhance student success and address the evolving needs of our schools! Hosted at City Hall, the meetings are attended by a representative from various departments including public safety, community involvement, parks and recreation, communications & marketing, and more. The meetings provide a platform for open dialogue and partnership, ensuring not only that the voices of our parents and principals are heard, but also that our city’s programs align with the needs of our schools.

Advocating for Coral Springs at the County Level

I am also proud to represent our community at Broward County School Board meetings. During these meeting, I gather information for our city commission and community, as well as, advocate for the priorities of Coral Springs parents and students, bringing their concerns, aspirations, and feedback directly to the School Board Members who make critical decisions that impact our youth. My presence ensures that Coral Springs’ interests are well-represented in broader educational decisions.

It Takes a Village! Supporting Our Youngest Students

Our city employees have taken on a special role at Coral Springs Elementary through our Coral Springs Village program. Volunteers help with various classroom needs like reading to small groups of students, assisting the teachers with classroom projects, donating classroom essentials, like water and snacks, and more. This initiative allows us to lend our creativity and kindness to support an elementary classroom and help its students and teachers succeed.

Celebrating Our Educators

As we look ahead, I am excited to announce upcoming recognitions that celebrate our educators’ invaluable contributions. On May 1, we will honor our principals on Principal Recognition Day. Shortly after, we will kick off Teacher Appreciation Week, starting May 5, with special offers around town to honor our dedicated teachers for their unwavering commitment to our children’s success. These celebrations are a small but heartfelt way to show our gratitude and support for their hard work.

Get Involved and Make a Difference

I invite all parents, students, and community members to join us in these efforts. Whether by attending a meeting, volunteering in a classroom, or simply offering words of appreciation to our educators, your involvement makes a difference. Do you have a school priority that you’d like to share? Contact me at awyche@coralsprings.gov.
