Teacher with Big Dreams

by Jen Gaver

I

t is a great treat to watch students and teachers come together for a common goal outside of school. Mrs. Allison Koenig, along with many of her talented present and past students, are working together to write an animated full screen film production called The New World. They have already sent it in to a publishing company for review. Their goal is that Disney loves it so much that they buy the rights. The amazing talent that this young teacher and her students have is indescribable. Mrs. Koenig loves writing

so much that sharing her love with her students is such a great pleasure. Her motivation comes from her students who wanted to write music. Mrs. Koenig works with talented students that motivate her daily by expressing her strengths. Though this is a huge feat, she is brave enough to try to accomplish her dream and the dream of her students. The moral of the story is to choose peace and friendship over everything, with an underlying message to be a good person who is brave at all costs.

Welcome to the Summer Edition of the Coral Springs & Parkland Sports & Activities Directory! If you are a parent, like me, then summer comes with a mix of excitement and apprehension. We are excited that there will be more time to spend as a family, perhaps going on a vacation or going the beach, the zoo or park. We will be enjoying long summer nights barbequing or going to ball games. There are a number of activities and events available all summer long to enjoy; like the Coral Springs 4th of July Event & Fireworks, the City of Parkland Fishing Tournament and Red, White and Blue Celebration & Bike Parade. With that excitement comes the anxiety of the question that almost every parent asks; “What are the kids going to do all summer long?” Fortunately our wonderful cities provide ample amounts of fun, educational and interesting camps to choose from for the children to experience. Summer is great time to have your children exposed to many different interests and opportunities to make new friends and broaden their horizons. Inside of this edition of the directory you will be able to see the many camps available to

crafts, field trips and friendships. Some parents may choose to send their kids to weekly camps that focus on one particular interest like basketball camps, football camps, science camps, focus on therapy or life skills. Also, within the directory we have articles on all of the amazing things our schools and communities are doing to enhance our cities. Take the time to enjoy and share with your children about “The Moving Wall”, which is a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. that will be in Coral Springs in October. Take a look at our articles about the Parkland Flag Football, Vice Mayor Stacy Kagan’s city update and a Teacher with Big Dreams. Discover the wonderful and exciting things our local schools have done all year to enhance the lives of our children. Finally, on a personal note, I want to wish all of you a spectacular summer and I

he Moving Wall is the only replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. The Wall will be here for viewing from October 22 through October 26, 2015. Lou Cimaglia founded and is heading the committee to bring the Wall here. The Veterans Coalition of Coral Springs, of which Lou is a founding member, will be the sponsor of this event. There will be a short opening ceremony on the evening of October 22 with a welcome by Coral Springs Mayor Skip Campbell. There will also be short ceremonies on the 23rd, 24th, and 25th with guest speakers such as Broward County Commissioner Stacy Ritter, State Senator Jeremy Ring and U.S. Representative Ted Duetch. Our local schools will take part in the

ceremonies at the Wall. Our JR ROTC program along with Police Explorers and Police Cadets will also participate. We are asking all youth groups to join us as well. In addition to fundraising, the Coalition will be instrumental in educating our children about the meaning of the Wall. We are putting together a short video that will help the kids understand all about the tragic war and let them know that they will be able to see and touch the Wall when it is here. This is a great opportunity for anyone who is not able to visit Washington D.C. to see the Memorial. For more information or to contribute, please contact Lou Cimaglia at 954-801-2004 or email at loucimagliajr@aol.com

arkland Flag Football is gearing up for its 18th season. Back in 1997 the town was smaller and it seemed as though the pace of life was a lot slower as well. Fall was a quiet period between baseball and soccer seasons. But as we all know, fall is the beginning of football season. A few local residents got together and put Parkland Flag on the map. The first season started with 120 players. Games were played at Terramar Park on Saturdays. Obviously the town was ready for some football. Year after year the league grew by leaps and bounds. Today the league has over 50 teams with kids playing from ages 5 to 14. All-girls divisions were added in 2006 and are the fastest growing segment of the league. Now games are played on Saturdays and throughout weeknights at Pine Trails Park. Flag football is similar to what you see on Sunday afternoons. But instead of pads and helmets and tackling, the kids must remove a flag from a belt attached to the offensive player. It’s fun and it’s fast so the kids enjoy the quick pace. Many kids have found flag football a great alternative to the more competitive sports like tackle football or the travel programs of various other sports. No video game controllers here. Flag is the perfect weapon for parents who want their children up and off the couch. The

season is a quick 10 weeks and the kids get plenty of exercise. The season begins after the summer break and games begin shortly after the new school year starts in August. Nothing compares to the experience a child gets when playing youth sports, especially flag football. Games are a fast-paced hour long. The kids have a chance to meet new friends and have a great experience learning a new sport. And let’s not forget about the parents. Many long-term friendships are gained among parents whose children played on the same teams. The league’s goal has always been to think of their players first. Former board president Kevin Myers’ resounding phrase, “It’s all about the kids” still continues to be the board’s guiding principal today. Board members today aspire to grow the program and continue to provide the opportunity for the children of Parkland to learn sportsmanship, leadership and the importance of teamwork. And while every player can’t be the quarterback, the league works hard to stress to the coaches that a fair ball distribution and a fair substitution policy makes for better (and happier) players. More information about the league can be found on the their web site at www.ParklandFlag.com.

ome interesting things are now happening in Parkland. I am thrilled to share these with you! Did you know that the City of Parkland just opened a new state-of-theart fire station on Hillsboro Boulevard? Station 109 houses a squirt truck and rescue truck along with the firefighters who man those trucks. The new fire station is over 8,700 square feet and will house the city’s Emergency Operations Center when needed. It is located at 11601 Hillsboro Boulevard in the newest part of the city known as the “Wedge Piece” allowing for enhanced fire rescue services to the newly developed areas of Parkland and to all of the residents within the city. Did you know the brand new facility replaces the temporary fire station that has been located next to the Margate Blount Archaeological Site on Trails

End Boulevard since 2007? That’s right, we have an archeological site in Parkland on Trails End! This is really cool stuff. The Historical Society is hard at work developing a three-phase program on the site about the Tequesta Tribe who inhabited this area from circa AD 500 to AD 1750. The Historical Society, along with the Friends of the Library, will be adding displays in both City Hall and the library with fossils and other archeological finds from the area. New signage and a boardwalk are planned for the site itself along with an interactive area for children. So check out our website at www.cityofparkland.org, follow us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/copfl or use our My Parkland app on your smartphone to see when these displays will be available. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions at 954-288-5261.

Teaching Our Children to Work Hard By Dr. David Yudell

T

here are endless lessons to learn while growing up. Many of these lessons are social or maturational in nature. Children certainly need to navigate through the events they experience while attending school, participating on a sports team, or while learning how to make (and keep) friends. Within each of those areas there are many subtle decisions that must be made, mistakes to persevere, and lessons to be learned. This article will focus on one of those subtle areas that begin in childhood and extends throughout adulthood. Learning to work hard. Research conducted by Carol Dweck and Claudia Mueller, completed a study looking at the effects of praise on young students. Half were praised for working hard and the other half were praised for their ability or “smartness.” When given a set of problems, those praised for hard work performed 25% better than the “smart” group. (Heidi Grant Halvorson https://hbr.org/2011/11/the-trouble-with-bright-kids). The lesson taught from this and similar research is that to get the best effort and results out

of our children, we need to reinforce hard work rather than ability. The kind of feedback we share with young children has a major impact on their view of their abilities. When we tell our children that they are smart or gifted or a good student we are telling them that they have (or do not have) the ability to do well. The lesson we want them to learn is that their hard work was directly responsible for their success and give them the building blocks to learn to control their endeavors through effort. As a parent you can do this by helping your child to learn that studying, practice and work is what will most frequently lead to success. Become a model for your child’s endeavors. Praise them often for their effort, not their accomplishments. Offer immediate, positive feedback on what they are doing and you will see their success and most importantly, their belief that they can affect positive change in their lives build year after year. I invite you to reach out to me for future article suggestions. Please email me at DrYudell@DrYudell.com.

With the entire pediatric areas now transformed, it showcases an underwater theme décor that makes any child feel as if they are in Disney. The units takes you through an underwater “feel better” castle and through massive life-size coral entry ways and down waterway hallways of colorful portholes with photography that depicts a story of what is done at the hospital. “The art is a true master piece that our pediatric patients, families and employees can enjoy,” said Caren Bock, nurse manager of children’s services for BHCS. The design was done with the youngest patients and their families in mind to convey an

in to the time you are seen by a provider.” This makes BHCS the quickest ER in Broward County as ranked by Hospital Compare. Dr. Anthony Martell, Chief of Pediatric at BHCS states that the initial goal was to strengthen and augment the internal operational and clinical components of the pediatric services based on the hospital’s strategic plan. “Now that we have made significant headway, we are ready to unveil the welcoming setting that complements our services,” said Dr. Martell The unveiling celebration is a FREE pirate family fun day on May 2nd from 11am -2pm on the north side parking lot of Broward Health Coral Springs at 3000 Coral Hills Drive in Coral Springs. Continual tours of the pediatric areas will take place through the entire event. The outside fun includes a 34-foot pirate ship. Yeap, you heard right! Climb between 5 decks and watch pirates role play as they battle the enemy and mermaids come to life in an adventure show. Meet and greet the pirates and mermaids for a photo op. Experience REAL parrots, our pet therapy dogs, pirate crafts, bounce houses, ambulance, fire truck & ambulance tours, police command centers, safety stations including Sparky’s Fire House, FREE food and food trucks(for purchase) along with tons of other fun educational activities. And don’t forget to wear your pirate & mermaid costumes! Door Prizes for the little pirates and mermaids. Admission is FREE, but please RSVP to 954-759-7400 or register at www.BrowardHealth.org/PirateDay.

environment of compassion and healing. Every patient room is themed with a different colorful sea creature showing compassion to each other through its eyes and body expressions. “The idea is for the artwork to help make the overall experience less traumatic by creating a caring atmosphere of compassion and security. We want to go the extra mile to make our patients feel comfortable and cared for,” said Bock The renovations were made possible through donated funds from the Broward Health Gala and an employee-driven donation campaign, “Give from the Heart.” The idea for the renovations grew out of the hospital’s strategic plan to complement the impressive services that the hospital’s pediatric program has brought to the community such as: the only Concussion Program in Broward County, the expansion of the Pediatric Drowning Prevention Task Force to educate families, the long standing Pet Therapy program, Camp Coral Kids (South Florida’s only medically supervised diabetic camp), specialized pediatric rehabilitation services, and ER for Kids which prides itself on the “no child should wait philosophy.” Voted “Best ER,” BHCS functions on a “Mushin” (Japanese for silent flow) approach that was implemented by Dr. James Roach, ER medical director at BHCS. “The medical team is seamless, following an efficient system that has brought improved levels of customer service and wait times far exceeding both state and national standards,” said Dr. Roach. “This has resulted in an 83% decrease in wait time which translates to a 14 minute average wait time from the time you walk

ummer is right around the corner and Imagine School at Broward is ready! Our staff and students thank all of the wonderful parent volunteers and the PTO for helping our school provide lots of educational programs with the latest resources. From ice cream fundraisers to family nights, there was something for everyone throughout the school year. With another fabulous school year winding down, two fantastic summer camp programs appeal to students from preschool through middle school. Imagine at Broward is probably one of the only schools around to have amazing animal habitats with peacocks, tortoises, rabbits, lizards and more! Through science classes and enrichments, students get to care for and learn about these animals. Thanks to Ms. Debra Darling and Mrs. Elizabeth Thompson and their E.D.G.E. Summer Camp and Enrichment Program, Imagine students and summer campers get hands-on experiences learning about science and our environment. This year’s 8-week Edge Adventure Summer Camp is a great way for campers to learn about and properly care for a variety of animals. Besides daily animal interaction, students have weekly science experiments and demos, engineering challenges, educational field trips, outdoor games, craft projects and more. Planned field trips include: The Fishing Hall of Fame, Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, Sawgrass

Park Everglades, Butterfly World, Palm Beach Zoo, the Museum of Discovery and Science, Bedners’ Farm and Lion Country Safari. For more information, visit http:// www.theedgeadventure.com. Camp Imagine is another great camp option for children entering Kindergarten on up. Camp Director, Ms. Cindy Brown promises a summer full of fun (and even some learning!) This year the camp will include an educational component to keep campers’ skills sharp for the fall. The academic portion will be taught by Imagine School teachers and the lessons will be taught in a creative and fun way – so the children won’t even realize that they are learning! Different camp packages are available to work with varied schedules. Activities include a giant water slide, game room, cooking, science, art and sports. Special themed weeks feature both in-house and outside field trips, movie days, yoga and dance and lots of surprises. Staff is comprised of teachers and aftercare counselors as well as C.I.Ts that are 8th graders or graduates of Imagine. For registration and information, contact Ms. Cindy Brown at cindy.brown@imagineschools.com or Ms. Roni Prager at roni.prager@imagineschools.com. Have a great summer and we look forward to seeing everyone next year!

PARK SPRINGS WISHES MRS. KLAASEN A WONDERFUL RETIREMENT By Sherri Schweiger

P

ark Springs Elementary has been incredibly fortunate to be under the leadership of Mrs. Arlene Klaasen for the past six years and we are going to miss her very much! We appreciate all of her hard work in making sure that Park Springs continued to be an A+ school. We wish her a wonderful retirement full of fun, fascinating and exciting adventures! A new Principal is not the only change at Park Springs Elementary for the 2015 – 2016 school year; we have new hours and a new theme as well! The new hours are from 7:45am to 1:45pm. The new theme will be “Discover Your Super Power at PSE” and we cannot wait to see all the new super hero bulletin boards when we return! We had a beautiful day for our school carnival on March 14th! Thank you to all of our teachers, staff, parents and student volunteers! We also had another wonderful family fun night on April 16th at Buffalo Wild Wings. Remember that our family events are an opportunity for PSE parents, staff and students to spend time together outside of school and to support our local businesses as they give back a portion of their proceeds to PSE. We still have many events coming up before the end of the year. We will be having a Kindergarten Round Up on May 19th at 5:00pm. We are looking for all students who will be ready for Kindergarten in the 2015 – 2016 school year and their parents to join us to learn more about Park Springs and how to enroll for the

upcoming year. That same evening, please join us at 6:00pm to see the student art created with Ms. Novell displayed throughout the school, a Chorus and Recorder Ensemble performance presented by Mr. Levitan, a Cup Stacking demonstration by Coach Champa, and our Buy One Get One Free Book Fair presented by Mrs. Jimenez in the media center! We will also have one final family fun night at McDonalds on May 28th! Please come by for food, fun, and to say goodbye to Mrs. Klaasen. We are also very proud of the 5th Grade Class of 2014 who will be having their Moving Up Ceremony on June 3rd. We know you will all be tremendously successful in middle school next year! This year the PTO was able to purchase new computers to modernize our school computer lab with the funds that were raised! The PTO is currently seeking new members to lead several committees including Carnival and Yearbook. Please contact them at parkspringspto@yahoo.com or come to our next meeting on May 13th at 8:30am. We would like to thank all the students, teachers, staff and parents for another amazing year at Park Springs Elementary! We wish you all a wonderful summer break and look forward to seeing you again on the first day of school, August 24th, 2015! If you would like to learn more about Park Springs Elementary or schedule a tour to see our “Panther Pride” you can contact us at 754-322-7750 or visit our website at http://parksprings.browardschools.com/.

Schools Students worked very hard to meet their academic goals and challenges. They also participated in a variety of extra-curricular clubs and events. Students were given opportunities to join yearbook club, Planeteer’s, chess, Hands on Equations, Scrabble®, guitar, piano, chorus, safety patrol and even a morning news crew. Forest Hills staff joined parents at day and night events as well. Some of the year’s events included the Fall Festival, Storybook Parade, Fiesta Painting, Dr. Seuss Day, a school-wide Valentine’s Dance, JA Biztown, field days for all, the Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS and many Parent Academies were offered throughout the school year. In March, First Methodist Church volunteers joined with Forest Hills students and staff to create a beautiful edible garden, which serves as an outdoor lab with hands-on lessons. Mrs. Adamowich’s hydroponics lab taught her 5th grade students how to start

with a plant cutting and produce a hearty edible plant. The children experimented with cuttings of adult plants and through observation in their hydroponics lab setting they were able to identify specifics such as where the cutting took place and the difference in how where they placed the plant affected the rate of root-growth. The use of hydroponics helped students observe the growth of the plant’s roots. As the weeks progressed, the plants were transplanted into soil for continual growth. The students noticed that some herbs preferred moister soil for optimum growth while other herbs grew stronger with a dryer soil. “To culminate the activity, the students will be decorating a simple clay pot specifically for Mother’s Day,” said Mrs. Adamowich. “The plants will then be transplanted once again. Their efforts will represent the appreciation they have for the hard work and dedication to our Moms, Grandmothers and Caregivers on this Mother’s Day 2015.”

household, Florida law dictates that the parties have a Parenting Plan entered by the court that sets forth all facets of the parents’ rights, responsibilities, and timesharing schedule as it relates to the children post-separation or dissolution. Parents can jointly agree to a Parenting Plan and jointly submit the plan to the court for ratification. This turns the document into a “parent contract” of sorts. Ideally, the parents work together to make parenting as flexible and amicable as possible for one another, which is always in the best interest of the children. When there is flexibility between parents, the Parenting Plan serves more as a fallback in the event the parents have a disagreement in the future regarding some aspect of parenting. The point of a Parenting Plan is to put in writing guidelines and procedures for co-parenting. No one can predict all of the challenges a child may face down the road, but a Parenting Plan attempts to anticipate as many issues as possible. When the court has previously entered a Parenting Plan and a parent wishes to modify a term of the plan, the parent can potentially file a Petition for Modification. To modify a Parenting Plan, you need to prove that there has been a substantial,

material and unanticipated change in circumstances since the time the original plan was entered, that it warrants a modification, and most importantly, that the modification is in the best interest of a child. One example of a situation where a parent wishes to modify a Parenting Plan is when that parent wishes to relocate more than 50 miles away from the other parent. In this situation where a Parenting Plan is already entered, the parent would have to file a Petition for Relocation. A move greater than 50 miles away will be a big change to your child’s and the other parent’s life so the family courts want to make sure the child’s best interests are met. Moving for a great job opportunity may bring in more income but it could be prohibitively costly for the other parent to exercise their timesharing. Ultimately, this could prevent the other parent from being able to be a supportive presence in your child’s life. Family law judges want to foster healthy relationships between children and parents after separation or divorce and to ensure each parent is able to exercise their timesharing. If you have any questions regarding a Parenting Plan and Florida law, please contact our office at scottbrook@scottjbrookpa.com.

estglades Middle School is pleased to announce that the 2015-2016 school year will be the inaugural year for two new elective offerings for our 6th graders: the NAF Finance Academy and the Pre-Engineering Academy. Both academies give students the opportunity to leave middle school with a Microsoft Office industry certification as well as high school credit for the 8th grade courses. We are very proud of these two new opportunities for our students to continue on the path of college and career readiness. Westglades is the only middle school to offer the NAF Finance Academy. National Academy Foundation (NAF) is a nationally and internationally recognized program dedicated to exposing students to careers in finance through real world experiences. This academy

will focus on business, marketing, entrepreneurship and economics and feed directly into the Stoneman Douglas High School’s program. The Pre-Engineering Academy is an outgrowth of our existing 7th and 8th grade courses. Students selecting this academy will learn computer graphics design, engineering, technology and more.

one of the nation’s fastest growing educational franchises. Carol and Brianna Frachtman are co-owners of Engineering For Kids Broward and are excited to be the ones to bring this program to our area. Both Carol and Brianna are teachers who jumped at the opportunity to expose children ages 4-14 to STEM concepts in a fun and challenging way. Carol’s goal is to build on children’s natural curiosities, unlimited imaginations and to provide opportunities for inquiry-based, collaborative lessons that spark enthusiasm for learning in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). While growing up, Brianna was that kid that loved all things related to math and science. She has taught middle school science in the areas of both earth and life sciences and her mission is to encourage children to believe that learning science, technology, engineering and math can and should be fun. The key is engagement and her mission is to do just that! We offer programs in

LEGO® Robotics and Electronic Game Design, as well as in Aerospace, Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Environmental, Industrial, Marine and Mechanical engineering.

At Engineering For Kids, our programs: • • • •

Help children build problem solving skills Encourage children to discover how things work Increase children’s desire to explore engineering as a career option Motivate children to learn math and science concepts by engaging them in real-world engineering problems

Engineering For Kids will build and nurture your child’s natural curiosity and love for building, taking things apart and teaching engineering concepts through hands-on learning. Engineering is, after all, one of the fastest growing industries in the world and it is important for children interested in it to get a head start on concepts and ideas that could fall in line with their future interests and line of work.

e are finishing up the 2015-2016 school year and are looking forward to welcoming our newest owls in August. Registration is now open. Stop by our office to pick up a registration packet and secure your spot for the 2015-2016 school year. Saturday, May 9, from 10:00am – 2:00pm, PTO is hosting our annual Spring Festival at Lions Park. This is our way of celebrating our successes and hard work! There will be bounce houses, music, a petting zoo and much more. We look forward to seeing the Hunt community at this event. Congratulations to Brittany Stano, our 2015 Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Stano is an outstanding teacher. She strives to develop personal relationships with her students and works hard to help every student in her class reach their fullest potential. She serves on school committees and volunteers at many of our school events. She is a great role model for young girls and a wonderful colleague. We are proud of her accomplishments and appreciate all she does at our school. Congratulations to Donna Amrhein, our 2015 School-Related Employee of the Year. Mrs. Amrhein works in the front office and does a great job as our Information Management Technician. She is such a valuable part of our front office team and is always stepping in to assist others when needed all while greeting our families with a smile. She assists parents with registering their children and handles attendance, class schedules and many

other critical tasks. We are so thankful she is a part of the Hunt staff. This year our students did a great job learning the new Florida Standards. They wrote essays stating their opinions and sharing information on a concept. Students also wrote narratives telling various stories. Students used accountable talk to discuss text and had to think critically about an author’s message or point of view. In math, students learned how to provide explanations on their mathematical reasoning and solve real-world problems. We are so proud of the learning that is taking place at James S. Hunt Elementary! As we move into summer, we want to remind everyone to continue to read a variety of literature and practice the math fluency expectation for your grade level. We want to make sure every child continues to progress and learn over the summer. We wish everyone a happy and active summer and cannot wait to see everyone in August!

A FABULOUS YEAR AT PARKSIDE ELEMENTARY T

his This has been a fabulous year at Parkside. It is hard to believe we are winding the year down and getting geared up for the 2015-16 school year. We want to first thank all of our parents, students and staff for all that they do to make Parkside the greatest place to learn. Over these next few weeks, we will be finishing up the year with many activities. This week, we are celebrating our wonderful staff at Parkside. All of the teachers, parents, custodians, clerical workers, cafeteria workers, support staff and itinerant staff work endlessly to ensure your children are getting a safe and secure learning environment with a high quality education. Please make sure your children show their appreciation during this week. We will be having our second Kindergarten Round Up on May 6th at 6:30pm. If you have an incoming K student who is turning 5 on or before September 1st, please join us to hear about our school and find out how to get registered. If you are interested in attending Parkside next year and you would like a tour of our school, please contact

Mrs. Wilkerson. Tours of the school are done on a weekly basis as needed. We are also still accepting reassignments for the 2015-16 school year. On May 13th, we will be having our PTA general meeting and our School Wide Exhibition. You don’t want to miss out on this event. Each hallway will be covered with student work connected to different biomes. This is an opportunity for students to be able to showcase their work from this year. The PTA meeting and free spaghetti dinner will begin at 6:00pm. Don’t forget during the summer to READ, READ, READ! Make sure your child spends at least thirty minutes a day reading. Also, all of our students will have access to Iready. This is an online computer program the students have been using throughout the year. It is a fun, interactive way to help keep your child on track throughout the summer. The website is www.iready.com. All students should have their passwords. If you need more information about the program, please contact the school. Have a wonderful and safe summer! See you at our meet and greet on August 21st, 2015.

here does the time go you ask? Every year seems to fly by faster than the one before with all the events, programs, and meetings that keep us all busy. But there are always things to look forward to as we wind down another school year. Our Kindergarten Roundup was held on April 10th at 9:00am in the cafeteria. Students and parents came to learn about the exciting things that will be happening at Ramblewood next year. Our first year with the Dual Language Program in first grade was a success. Those students will continue on to second grade in the Dual Language Program. The goal of this program is to provide students with the opportunity to become fully bilingual by teaching them listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in both English and Spanish. This year we wanted to add a little “spice” to our Spring Family Carnival by including a Multicultural Fair to the event which took place April 25. The

ethnic infusion was a big hit with our families, since many come from diverse backgrounds and a multitude of nationalities. In addition to all the food, games and prizes, we had student performances inspired by the cultures of different countries from around the world. Career Day is a well-known tradition at our school and the students look forward to it every year. Classes rotate to different presentations, getting to experience four to five speakers sharing their occupations. This year we are excited and looking forward to our Career Day happening on May 8, 2015. We hope everyone has an exciting summer and we look forward to seeing you next school year! Ramblewood Elementary School is located at 8950 Shadow Wood Boulevard in Coral Springs. If you would like more information, please visit our website at ramblwoodelem.browardschools.com or call (754) 322-8150.

Country Hills Elementary

Walks for Love

Love was in the air during the month of February at Country Hills Elementary.

Our staff, students, and parents participated in a fundraiser to raise awareness of the increasing rate of homelessness and hunger, especially for families with young children. Students in our school continue to work on building community and understanding their role as a “kid of character.” The compassionate, considerate, and respectful qualities of these traits encourage our students to want to make a difference in the world. Food is an important part of our culture and our families. It is important to our holidays and celebrations. It is extremely important to our learning. According to Feeding America, approximately 20 percent of the children living in Broward County

are food insecure. The USDA defines food insecurity as “inconsistent access to adequate food limited by a lack of money and other resources at times during the year.” Currently, the average meal in Broward County costs about $2.98. This is above the national average. Each class, including Pre-K through 5th grade, participated in a one-mile walk around North Community Park in Coral Springs. Students and parents donated $2.00 to the cause. All proceeds collected from the walk were donated to the Broward Outreach Center Meals A Month program. The money will help the center provide hot meals to the homeless and hungry. We raised a total of $2,325!

Summer Camp

Summer Camp held at Sawgrass Springs Middle School. In addition, D3 Elite players are involved in community service year round. From a blanket drive for the homeless during the winter season to our upcoming Father’s Day Party at the Broward County Outreach Center in Pompano Beach for homeless fathers and many more. When it comes to testing their skills against other programs, D3 Elite does not shy away from completion. Some of the bigger tournaments they have played in are held at Bob Gibbons, in Atlanta and Super Sixty, which is held in New Orleans. They recently hosted a tournament at Coral Springs Gymnasium on Martin Luther King weekend. This was the second annual Martin Luther King weekend showcase. The tournament had over 40 teams playing and competing. The reviews were raving with some saying that it was one of the best and most competitive tournaments in South Florida. In May, they will be playing again at Bob Gibbons and also will be headed back to New Orleans for tournaments. The program is not only for the boys but they also have girl teams.
