o look at the wonder of a Cirque du Soleil artist’s body, one can only imagine the amount of training, conditioning, strict calorie counting and discipline that makes up a daily routine. Just what does it take to be able to bend, stretch and contort the body into such incredible and mind-blowing positions? Or to fly one-handed 30 feet in the air above an awestruck audience? It would probably surprise you to know that the artists of Cirque du Soleil’s Amaluna, coming to Miami in December this year, don’t actually give too much thought to what they are eating, drinking or doing in their down time. Although the troupe travels with four chefs, two physiotherapists and two coaches, these roles are seen as guides and resources, rather than a police force. “Our artists are professional athletes,” says Amaluna’s Head Coach Yohann Renne. “They have been practicing habits to keep their strength and agility at the level it needs to be from around the time they could walk.” Renne explains that the artistic support team will always guide an artist if they are feeling weak or rehabilitating through an injury, and provide assistance to those who seek it, but the goal is not to enforce specific training as each artist has their own tried and true methods of looking after themselves. Physiotherapist Lisa Basarab, says her role is to provide clinics and sports medicine to the performers, which aids in injury prevention and management, however, she says that the artists are all held accountable for their conditioning and physique. “In each city we visit, we hire a local masseuse and Pilates instructor and often invite guest teachers onsite to provide dance and yoga classes to keep the artists stimulated,” says Basarab. “Performing eight to ten shows per week means they get an

incredible workout just by being onstage, but it is important to their physical and mental wellbeing to be able to enjoy other types of conditioning.” These classes and training options are not enforced, and are simply a suggestion available for those who want it. There is also an elliptical machine and small fly-weight gym machine set up in the Artistic Tent (the onsite training facility) available for the artists to use and Basarab notes that about 80% of the tour members travel with bicycles (there are 46 artists working on Amaluna in addition to 68 technicians and support staff) to be able to explore the city they call home for six to eight weeks before moving on to the next destination. “People on tour have an adventurous spirit,” says Amaluna’s Company Manager Franck Hanselman. “Although the tour only gets one day off per week, you will often see anything from groups of cyclists and hikers to rock-climbers and runners, to scuba-divers and surfers and snowboarders! Since we are always on the move, there is always someplace new to explore and we are a very active bunch.” The onsite kitchen at Cirque du Soleil’s Amaluna prepares over 250 meals per day, but it is not always as health-conscious as you might think. “Our company was founded in Québéc, Canada, and the national dish there is Poutine – which is French fries topped with cheese curds and brown gravy. Definitely not what you would consider to be ‘professional athlete food!’” says Hanselman. “The chefs are feeding everyone onsite from the technicians, electricians, welders, plumbers and carpenters to the artists, musicians and

gymnasts – and everyone in between! With 17 different nationalities represented on tour, our kitchen does a wonderful job of preparing dishes from all over the world.” Acrobatic coach Misha Galkin says, “It is the responsibility of the artist to ensure they are getting the nutrients they need to perform their best; however, they are burning off so many calories during a performance that they can get away with eating pretty much what they want. We don’t enforce meal plans, curfews or restrictions but we are always available to give advice.” Galkin explains that when the artists first join Cirque du Soleil, they are met by a team of nutritionists and specialists at the company’s headquarters in Montréal to ensure they are equipped with the right information to look after themselves and continue a healthy career. Amaluna features a 70% female cast, which is a flip on the traditional casting of a Cirque du Soleil show where the male contingent usually represents 70% - 75% of the artists. Amaluna was created as the first Cirque du Soleil show in 30 years to represent and showcase the strength and power of women, while maintaining femininity and grace. Written and directed by Tony Awardwinning director, Diane Paulus, Cirque du Soleil’s Amaluna premieres under the iconic blue and yellow Big Top at Sun Life Stadium on December 11, 2014. Dear Readers, Welcome to the Holiday Issue of the Sports & Activities Directory! I am proud to introduce myself as the publisher of a magazine that represents and serves my ‘home’ town. I have been following the progress of the directory from its first issue and have been very impressed with the school articles, stories featuring local students, and the directory style layout that makes it easy to see what is going on in our great cities. Having two children of my own that are active in sports and other activities in the community, and getting the directory delivered right in my son’s backpack every quarter has made it very convenient to have ONE resource to use for all the information that previously would take me many websites & other sources to find. After joining the Coral Springs and Parkland Sports & Activities Directory team I have had the wonderful opportunity to meet many of the school principals and see first-hand all the great things they and their teachers do to help educate our children. I discovered the link between the chamber of commerce and the high schools through an education committee. I have been impressed by many of our local students and all of their amazing achievements. For instance, in this issue you will learn about the impressive DECA programs at the high schools, JP Taravella hosted the 9/11 Stair Climb and raised over $5000 for fallen firefighters & 9/11 orphans and Coral Springs Charter’s DECA students are in the middle of a yearlong service project remembering 9/11 on 9/12 of each month. I was able to meet Jose Fernandez, Westchester Elementary head custodian; he donated over $16,000 that he earned for his artwork for academic scholarships for local schools. Also, I learned about a band teacher that passed away after serving his students for many years and being an inspiration to many more. I also had a chance to attend and experience many sports & activities in our local community in a different way. As a photographer and spectator, I saw so many of our kids doing amazing things on the field and in the class room. Please help us by continuing to celebrate the great achievements your kids are making by sending photos and story ideas to kimsports1@aol.com. My goal as a mother, a local resident and the publisher is to make the directory your “goto” resource for your family’s sports and activities needs. Be sure to download our mobile app at Sports & Activities and like us on Facebook at Coral Springs Parkland Sports and Activities. Please check out our extensive events calendar for all the wonderful things going on that brings our fantastic communities together and creates that warm spirit of the season. Finally, my hope is that your holidays are filled with joy, fun, good health for you and your loved ones.

My best to you, Kim

Getting ready for the Holidays and the New Year with Parkland’s Mayor Udine

s South Florida continues to grow and expand so does the city of Parkland. The city continues to be one of the most desirable cities to live. “As new homes are being bought in the city, our tax base is expanding allowing us to LOWER our tax millage rate as we have done over the past few years,” Mayor Udine said. “We are seeing more capital improvements coming on line with assists from some of the larger developers and land owners.” The city is also opening up their third fire station. The city will be expanding Pine Trails Park, a place where families gather for events. Terramar Park will also be updated and a Veterans Park was established as well. This time of year is perfect for family fun in Parkland. “Our concerts in the Amphitheater are great,” Mayor Udine said. “Plus our farmers markets are always a big hit during the winter months.” The new developments are helping the city’s shopping centers and commercial space stabilize. More businesses catering to locals are opening, as there is a bigger pool of customers. In the future, the city may see an expansion of the Library and a 55-plus active adult community. A high-end steak house will also be opening in the Parkland Commons. Home values are increasing and according a recent study, Parkland is one of the few cities that is almost back to its peak from 2007. “People want Parkland. They want to be in Parkland’s great schools, and use the wonderful parks,” Mayor Udine added. “Parkland

was recently rated the safest in Florida, and we are proud of the positive results in our city.” A personal note from Mayor Udine: I would like to extend my best wishes for a happy Thanksgiving and Holiday Season to all. We have a lot to be thankful for living in such a great community. It is easy to lose sight of that with all the pressures that day-to-day life brings us, but each of us has something to be thankful for! For me, it’s family, friends and the ability to help make the world a better place. Things are going very well throughout the City. As we move into November we recognize, Veterans Day and thank all the Veterans who have protected our way of life. I also wish everyone the best for the Holidays and the New Year. I place my values as your Mayor on trying to make sure we leave this place a little better than when we found it. Wishing for peace and happiness to all of Parkland’s great families.

local baseball team took their skills all the way to the Pony World Series. The team was comprised of players 8 and under, and coached by Jimmy Garguilo, Rob Goldstein, Sean Luft and Casey Burns. The travel baseball team won numerous local and regional tournaments to qualify for the National Tournament in Texas. In Texas, the boys were the only team from Florida. They played four very intense games to get into the championship. The first game was 10-3

against South Oaks. The second game was 17-6, the third game was 12-9 against Burelson. The Championship game was against the Katy Legends team and the Inferno won, capturing the title with a score of 16-11. The team has been playing together since July 2013. The boys practiced two days a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Their efforts and dedication made them the first team from Margate to play in the Pony World Series and WIN!

TEAMS UP WITH FEEDING SOUTH FLORIDA E

ating a nourishing meal is something that many of us take for granted, but did you know that in South Florida, nearly one million people struggle with hunger, one in four children go to bed hungry and one in seven seniors face the choice between paying rent, buying medication or eating a healthy meal? A critical component of a high-quality life is good health, which starts with eating right. Unfortunately, lack of access to healthy and fresh foods is a very real problem that exists right here in our own backyard. Lack of food can lead to serious problems. In children, it can lead to behavioral issues and decreased performance in school, as well as immediate and long-term health complications including diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure. For seniors, lack of food and poor nutrition can lead to memory loss and increased risk of heart disease, osteoporosis and kidney failure. In addition, seniors living on a fixed income are often forced to make the choice between vital medications and groceries. For the second time, Gentle Dental Group is teaming up with Feeding South Florida to help make a difference in the lives of those who struggle to put food on the table. Having collected 2,000 pounds of food in last year’s food drive, Gentle Dental is now on a mission to collect even more food for South Floridians in need. From October 27th through December 4th, Gentle Dental will be collecting nonperishable food items at all of its 26 South Florida dental offices. All of the food collected will be donated to Feeding South Florida for distribution within South Florida communities to families and individuals in need, food pantries, youth programs, senior centers and direct service programs. “We are excited to team up with Feeding South Florida for our second annual Gentle Dental Food Drive to help feed local communities,” explains Christy

Englehart, COO of Northwestern Management. “We want to do our part in the effort to end hunger in South Florida.” Together with Feeding South Florida, media sponsors SFL-TV (CW 19), WSVN (Fox 7), Palm Beach Radio Broadcasting (WRMF-FM 97.9, WIRK-FM 103.1, WEAT 107.9 and WMBX 102.3), Lifestyle Media Group, Life Publications, Sports & Activities Directories, and YOU, we can make a difference. If you would like to donate non-perishable food items at one of the 26 Gentle Dental locations, please visit GentleDentalGroup.com to find an office near you. If you would like to contribute monetarily, you can participate in our virtual food drive found on our website at GentleDentalGroup.com/Feeding-South-Florida. oral Springs firefighters in full gear were sweating, principals had red faces, and students were groaning, but all had smiles on their faces after climbing 110 stories to benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and Twin Towers Orphan Fund. Students from J.P. Taravella High School DECA, a Marketing and Finance club in Coral Springs, organized 120 climbers for a morning filled with inspiration, exercise, and remembrance. After hearing the CSFD Pipes and Drums play while the JROTC presented the flags, the event began with Serge Benjamin, a 9/11 Twin Tower survivor, recounting his experience in evacuating from the 68th floor after the first plane struck the tower. His passionate story of confusion, fear and hope as firefighters guided, directed, and urged the continued movement of the towers workers to safety led the audience of a couple hundred to silence and tears. The picture of him and two other survivors covered in dust as they walked from the destruction enhanced the experience. DECA members then presented a biography of three NYFD firefighters, two of them brothers, who lost their lives in the tragedy. The brothers were friends of one of the teachers at the school, which brought the loss closer to home. Because they were too young to remember, 300 students in marketing and finance classes were

assigned research and a presentation to the class about their chosen firefighter, one of 343 who died that day. This inspired many DECA members to make the climb or raise funds through pledges. Climbers moved to the JPT three story building for 27 laps of the stairs and hallways which would approximate the 110 stories of the Twin Towers. In actuality, 9/11 firefighters reached the 65th and 78th floors of the two towers, so those climbers who reached 72 stories on Saturday earned a beautiful Challenge Coin designed by students and a photo with the event banner. The majority of climbers reached their goal and proudly accepted the coin and had their picture taken with fellow participants. Coral Springs Fire Chief Babinec and Taravella High School Principal Shawn Cerra were among those that finished the 110 stories. Taravella DECA event advisor, Jamie Simmons and co-chairs Aaron Mitchell, Ambalika Tirado, and Rachael Christopher proudly announced the amount raised for the charities reached approximately $5,000. The students will develop the activity into a 30 page manual for competition as a Public Relations Project at state and international competition. T-shirts and commemorative coins are available for purchase for $15 by calling 954 899-5543 or at Jamie.simmons@browardschools.com.

Have you heard of the South Florida Inferno? I

f not, keep your eyes and ears open because they are tearing up the eight and nine year old travel baseball leagues in Florida and even Texas. The 9U team coached by Jimmy Gargiulo won the World Series in Texas this summer & the 8U team is looking to make an even bigger splash. These 12 kids work hard at their craft and have a serious passion for the game of baseball. Most practices are two hours but many of the kids show up early and stay late. Coach Kenny Carlo has to kick them off the field each night. This group of kids has been playing together for a year. The team also added their first girl to play with the inferno. Kaitlyn Maston joined the team in May, and has turned into a fan and team favorite. The boys have accepted Kate & have formed a great bond. It’s not unusual to see these kids fishing, bowling, or swimming together. Kate mostly plays first base and pitcher, but has also played outfield and catcher. Kate has hit 2 home runs since joining and helped the inferno win all four tournaments that they entered. She has earned the team, coaches & opponents respect by having a love for the game that is easy to see. Coach Kenny calls her the machine because she is consistent and because of her continuous hard work for the game.

When Kate was told that no woman has ever played Major League Baseball, Kate responded, “So I will be the first!!” Her mom calls her a nut. “Kaitlyn will wake up on game days, jump out of bed and put her uniform on even if her game is at night. Normally Kate is far from a morning person.” Her dad loves to see Kate smile while working hard at something she loves. “It’s good to see her learn that hard work pays off. Coach Kenny has done a great job challenging Kate and helping her improve.” He tells her that she is just as crazy about the game as he is. The 8U Inferno is starting their journey to a World Series title in Texas. They’ll make their home base in Margate but will play all throughout Broward, Palm Beach, Miami, Tennessee, Texas and many more locations. They do numerous fundraisers and are always looking for good people to work with. If you appreciate kid sports and great baseball, be sure to come watch them. They really are a special group of kids. Inferno also has tryouts throughout the year. If you know of any young baseball players who have a true passion for the game and want to join an amazing group, please call Kenny Karlo at 954-608-2294 to schedule a tryout..

Embrace Conflict By Scott J. Brook, P.A.

C

onflict happens. Conflict is real. Yet, we often shy away from it. Or bury it. Or deal with it later. I suggest that we choose other options when conflict occurs. As a father of five, practitioner of law with a focus on Family Law, and former Mayor of Coral Springs, I have a great deal of experience with conflict and more importantly, going beyond the conflict. This article shares six steps to conflict resolution that can help you at home, in business, and hopefully in any area of your life that you may seek to apply it to. [1] Embrace the conflict. Take it head on. Stop denying there is conflict or that there “shouldn’t be” conflict. Instead, look to the conflict as an opportunity. It is much more empowering to view conflict as an opportunity to improve your life rather than as something to always avoid. Conflict is inevitable. Friction causes progress. [2] Consider your options to resolve your conflict. Don’t be hasty. Carefully reflect on various ways to address the dilemma. If the conflict is so great, write about it. Put it on paper, or on your computer. Share your conflict with the intent to resolve your conflict by getting it out of your head. [3] Don’t just complain about it. Don’t panic about it. Complaining tends to promulgate the conflict, not produce a resolution. It’s as though the more people they complain to, the better it makes them feel. I disagree, with an exception. Maybe you just need to vent a little. A little venting is a positive complaint with a purpose. [4] Seek assistance. There is nothing wrong, and everything right, with asking another for help. Whether it’s a professional, a good friend, family member or

even, maybe someone whom you don’t know much at all. [5] Resolve it! You have 3 options to resolve your conflict. When there’s another person you’re in conflict with: A) Change their mind, B) Change your mind, or C) Arrive at a compromise Let’s say you’re in conflict with your former spouse about where your children should go to school. You live in different cities but you each want your children to attend schools close to home. Your options are: agree to their choice, attempt to convince them of your choice, or choose a compromise. You might reach a compromise by splitting their time equal parts at each school, or a similar compromise. All of these are ways to resolve your conflict. [6] Accept your conflict. After you have tried these other avenues mentioned, you still have a powerful option. You can accept the fact that you have a conflict. In my law practice, I regularly face opponents with whom I have constant conflict. Their personalities are abrasive; they are typically committed to a fight (not a resolution); and they are, to say the least, extremely unpleasant to deal with. I try to keep my complaints about them to a minimum and I’ve learned to accept the fact that I have regular conflict with them. This helps me to focus on either resolving the conflict through a Judge’s decision or at least not be bothered by the conflict itself. Please feel free to email me your thoughts about this article at scottbrook@scottjbrookpa.com.

CHILD

DISCIPLINE By Dr. David Yudell

I

n the past few weeks our country has seen a dramatic rise in violence committed by sports figures. Specifically, I am referring to professional football. The topic that hit home with regard to my area of expertise was child discipline or punishment. To understand the topic we will start with a goal and then some facts. First the goal. This should be straight forward and simple. To teach our children to become respectful, caring, self sustained adults (okay maybe not so simple). The part that is easier to understand is when we provide for our children. We know that we should put them in the best school, buy them the clothing, school supplies, sporting equipment and multitude of other “things” that they need on a day to day basis. The confusion comes when we get frustrated or angry. We get angry when our children “misbehave” or “don’t listen”. That is when some parents start down a path when they choose physical punishment. Here are the facts: The American Psychological Association shared that physical punishment, including spanking, can lead to increased aggression, antisocial

behavior, physical injury and mental health problems for children. A survey has shown that while punishment has declined in the U.S. since the 1960’s, two thirds still approve of spanking. Researchers have further identified a cycle of violence in homes where physical punishment was used. Children who are physically punished were more likely to endorse hitting as a means of resolving their conflicts with peers and siblings (APA.org). There is even one study conducted by the Institute of Violence, Abuse and Trauma that children who were spanked show a decrease in IQ when compared to those who were not spanked. If by now you are reading this and have accepted that physical punishment is a poor choice, your next question may be, “how can I change my child’s behaviors?” Discipline with love, listen and communicate. Focus on the behavior, not the child. Be realistic, calm and fair. Set boundaries. Make it a learning opportunity. Reward and praise desirable behaviors. And of utmost importance, model the desired behaviors (americanhumane.org). If you start and end with the goal of raising your child to be the best person they can be, you can hold onto that thought when they make mistakes so that you can provide guidance, correction and love during times of need. I invite you to reach out to me for future article suggestions. Please email me at DrYudell@DrYudell.com.

DECIDING WHAT TYPE OF THERAPY YOUR CHILD MAY NEED Physical Therapy

Doctors often recommend physical therapy (PT) for kids and teens who have been injured or who have movement problems from an illness, disease, or disability. After an injury, physical therapists work to decrease pain and help kids return to daily activities. They teach kids exercises designed to help them regain strength and range of motion, and also show kids and families how to prevent future injuries. Physical therapy might be needed any time a problem with movement limits someone’s daily activities. Doctors often recommend PT for kids with: sports injuries • developmental delays • cerebral palsy • genetic disorders • orthopedic disabilities/injuries • heart and lung conditions • birth defects (spina bifida) • effects of in-utero drug or alcohol exposure • acute trauma • head injury • limb deficiencies • muscle diseases.

What Physical Therapists Do

PT’s use a variety of treatments to help build strength, improve movement, and strengthen skills. PT’s guide kids through: developmental activities • such as crawling and walking • balance and coordination • adaptive play • aquatic therapy • improving circulation around injuries by using heat • cold • exercise • electrical stimulation • massage • and ultrasound • training to build strength around an injury • flexibility exercises to increase range of motion. During a visit, a physical therapist may: measure a child’s flexibility and strength • analyze how a child walks and runs • identify existing and potential problems • consult with other medical • psychiatric • and school personnel about an individual education plan (IEP) • provide instructions for home exercise programs and recommend when returning to sports is safe.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy (OT) treatment focuses on helping people with a physical, sensory, or cognitive disability be as independent as possible in all areas of their lives. OT can help kids with various needs improve their cognitive, physical, sensory, and motor skills and enhance their self-esteem and sense of accomplishment. Kids Who Might Need Occupational Therapy: birth injuries or birth defects • sensory processing disorders • traumatic injuries (brain or spinal cord) • learning problems • autism/pervasive developmental disorders • juvenile rheumatoid arthritis • mental health or behavioral problems • broken bones or other orthopedic injuries • developmental delays • post-surgical conditions • burns • spina bifida • traumatic amputations • cancer • severe hand injuries • multiple sclerosis • cerebral palsy • and other chronic illnesses. Occupational therapists might: help kids work on fine motor skills so they can grasp and release toys and develop good handwriting skills • address hand-eye coordination to improve kids’ play and school skills • help kids with severe developmental delays learn basic tasks (such as bathing, getting dressed, brushing their teeth, and feeding themselves) • help kids with behavioral disorders maintain positive behaviors in all environments (e.g., instead of hitting others or acting out • using positive ways to deal with anger • such as writing about feelings or participating in a physical activity) • teach kids with physical disabilities the coordination skills needed to feed themselves • use a computer • or increase the speed and legibility of their handwriting • evaluate a child’s need for specialized equipment • such as wheelchairs • splints • bathing equipment • dressing devices • or communication aids • work with kids who have sensory and attentional issues to improve focus and social skills.

his is a banner year for Imagine School at Broward! Recently designated as a “High Performing Charter School” by The Commissioner of Education for the State of Florida, the school is now a K – 8 charter school. Additionally, both the elementary and middle schools are “A” schools! Students in all grades have recently taken the new STAR testing; curriculum nights have introduced parents to the teachers and showcased what the students will be learning throughout the school year. While academics are a top priority at Imagine School at Broward, there are also many great enriching activities and extracurricular programs. Field trips such as High Touch High Tech, Bedner’s Farm and even a trip to the movies to see “Dolphin Tale 2” (one of the science teachers had worked at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium where the movie was filmed!) compliment lessons learned daily in the classroom. Students in grades 7 and 8 are also looking forward to an exciting trip to Washington, D.C. this February. There are lots of afterschool classes that students can also sign up to join, including the EDGE Adventure, Bricks 4 Kidz, Spanish, 5678 Dance, Draw!Art, Just Breathe Yoga and Krav Maga. Now that the school year is in full swing, before and after school clubs and activities are underway, including Student Council, Chorus and Drama. The Student Dance Committee is hard at work planning the Fall Dance and the Peer Counseling Class is organizing another Mix-It-Up at Lunch diversity week. Two years ago, Imagine was recognized as one of only 60 middle schools nationally

as a model school for its innovative “Mix-It-Up” week. Twenty-three delegates from the middle school will attend Uniteens diversity training sponsored by the City of Coral Springs. On the sports fields, Imagine students are making strides in basketball, soccer and track. Middle school students have the opportunity to compete against other schools around the county. Teamwork, good sportsmanship and healthy living are a big component of the schools’ growing athletic program. Character education is infused throughout the school year. Recently, students took part in “International Peace Week,” by wearing white and creating an “Imagine Peace Wish Tree.” Each month, students are recognized by their teachers for representing such positive character traits as citizenship, responsibility and caring. The Imagine Parent Teacher Organization (P.T.O) is an active group of volunteer parents who help fundraise and plan special school-wide events. The Fall Festival is one highly-anticipated event that includes amusement rides, games, fun, food and entertainment, happened on Oct. 18th and was fun had by all. With P.T.O. assistance, playground enhancements have been made, new computers and laptop carts have been purchased and the school can provide additional programs for the students. For more information about Imagine School at Broward, a K-8 public charter school, please call 954-255-0020 or visit www.imaginebroward.org.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas Eagle Regiment Marching Band

Remembers John Rusnak W

hat kind of school program expects their students to be on the football field for 10 hour practices, run an equivalent of 2 miles a day, walk at least 3 miles, brave the heat and wear a long sleeve and long pants uniform plus another layers of shorts and a t-shirt underneath? One word: band. In the community of Parkland, resides our own local award winning band, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Eagle Regiment Marching Band. Over the years, the band has grown from a small group of young musicians to current school year of 2014 at 159 students. This places the marching band in the 5A band with stiff competition in the months ahead. No easy task for a program run by generous private business donations from the Parkland and Coral Springs community, from all the band parents as well as the countless volunteer hours and even past Alumni of the band coming in to assist. But this year has been shaken by the tragic and sudden death of the beloved Band Director, Mr. John Rusnak on August 6th, at the young age of 58. Since the opening of the MSD High School, Mr. Rusnak has been the only music director they have had. He has built an award winning program admired by music professionals from across the United States and in his 25 years at MSD alone, he inspired over 5,000 students to keep practicing, keep loving music and build a community of trust and camaraderie..

By Kimball Stadler

Many Proud Moments for the Band John Rusnak led the band to Arizona, where they performed in the Fiesta Bowl Parade, in 1995 for the Peach Bowl in Atlanta and even in 1996 for the Thanksgiving Day Parade in Philadelphia. One event topped them all and that was the opportunity to have our band march in the Tournament of Roses in 1999. Mr. Rusnak was grinning ear to ear for the entire 7-mile walk through flowers, people and the most beautiful floats ever designed. “He taught us that no matter what happens, there are no excuses in life and no reason NOT to bring your best attitude to practice and competition each and every time,” said Katie Stadler, Baritone player with MSD Eagle Regiment Marching Band. The outpouring of kind words and assistance from neighboring schools and staff has been inspiring as well. This year the MSD Football team wears a special tribute to John Rusnak and I can assure you, each time the marching band takes the field in practice or competition, John Rusnak is in our hearts and minds as a talented musician, teacher and friend. Band Director, John Rusnak is survived by his wife, Denise and 2 kids, Kristen and Kathryn in the Coral Springs area. Thank you Mr. Rusnak for inspiring us all to play at our very best.

We can count on our teachers and staff to continue to provide high quality instruction as they encourage students to “Perceive It, Believe It and Achieve It”! We know the learning has begun and so has the fun at PSE! We had a very successful PTO sponsored McTeachers family night at McDonalds in September, with several of our teachers and staff working the counter and the drive thru window! We also had a fabulous fall book fair where our students were able to purchase the latest in all genres of books from Scholastic. Our students are always excited to “Get Caught Reading” at PSE! Of course, Halloween Bingo was “frightfully” exciting with many creative costumes, exceptional Bingo callers, prizes, pizza, family and fun! Thank you to our teachers and staff who are always willing to “get in the game” and help at our events, and to the PTO board members and parents who volunteer and bring their students to participate in these events. Keep

your eyes open for more activities coming up like Thanksgiving Basket Collections, Winterfest, and classroom celebrations and field trips. PSE was very excited to participate in our first International Walk to School day on October 8th. With the support and participation of the Coral Springs Police Department, teachers, staff and PTO, we had a tremendous turnout of students and parents walking to school! The proof was a complete absence of any carline! PSE encourages their students and parents to walk to school, especially as our weather turns cooler, to promote a healthy way to start the day! Our teachers and staff do an outstanding job of educating, encouraging and challenging our students! Parents can also play a critical role in their child’s success at school by building the habit of good attendance. Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school and themselves, so we encourage you to start building this habit right away. We like to say, “you must be present to win…in education”! If you would like to learn more about Park Springs Elementary or schedule a tour to see our “Panther Pride”, please contact us at (754) 322-7750 or visit our website at http://parksprings.browardschools.com/.

Fall Events at Forest Hills Elementary On Friday, September 5, the staff of Forest Hills

Elementary took the Ice Bucket Challenge. The event raised close to $500 for ALS. The Ice Bucket Challenge, sometimes called the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, is an activity involving dumping a bucket of ice water on someone’s head to promote awareness of the disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and encourage donations to research. It went viral on social media during July–August 2014. The challenge encourages nominated participants to be filmed having a bucket of ice water poured on their heads and then nominating others to do the same. A common stipulation is that nominated participants have 24 hours to comply or forfeit by way of a charitable financial donation. The school’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), Commissioners Dan Daley, Tom Powers and Larry Vignola joined the crew. The school was

excited to see the community some together to support his worthy cause. Another great event at Forest Hills, was the Fall Festival on October 24. The event had bubbling witches brew, bloody monster fingers with a little ear wax (hot dogs with ketchup and mustard), and a haunted house. This was a fun-filled festival for the students as they ended the first nine-weeks of the 2014-15 school year. The school wants to thank all those who came to the event, and a big thank you to those who helped with both events. As the school begins the next marking period, the faculty and staff will continue to focus on academics and working with students to create the best possible learning environment. Please call the school if you have any questions or if you would like a tour and information on how to register 754-322-6400.

arlins Foundation hosted their Annual Fox Sports Live Fantasy Auction. Two paintings by Jose Fernandez, Westchester’s custodian were presented, and raised over $16,000! It was an amazing evening to be part of and even more amazing that Jeff Conine helped this Scotsman be part of this Live Auction. Mr. Conine saw Fernandez’s artwork and thought it would be a great way to raise money during the live game. Fernandez painted the large 30x40 canvas right inside the ballpark next to Center Field so everyone saw it taking shape. Fernandez stated, “It was an incredible experience to have so many people see my work in person and on live television. Being interviewed by Fox Sports was just

way beyond my imagination. I now know I can make a real difference to someone’s day with my artwork through charity. I really can’t thank the Marlins, Fox Sports and Jeff Conine enough for making my dreams come true!” Art is just something Fernandez does in the evenings as he works as a Janitor/ Head Custodian at Broward Schools, Westchester Elementary in Coral Spring during the day. He explains that his day job helps him stay grounded and focused on using charity through his artwork. His goal is to raise a million dollars to donate to others. Proceeds from this marquee event were donated to Miami Dade County Schools and numerous academic scholarships.

Messages of Peace with James S. Hunt Elementary T

he students at James S. Hunt Elementary celebrated “Whirled Peace” by planting their pinwheels with millions of children around the world on Friday, September 19, 2014. We planted a message of peace by having each student and staff member plant a pinwheel in our beautiful butterfly garden. Students also participated in a writing project explaining how they demonstrated peace in their school, home, and community. Additionally, students have also been modeling daily acts of peace and kindness. Mrs. Debi Renee London, our art teacher, guided her art students to create beautiful pinwheels for the students and staff to plant Hunt’s Butterfly Garden. Ms. Denbow, the school guidance counselor, along with all of the students learned about the history of pinwheels for peace. They created a Peace Wall in the Cafeteria. Students “Chalked” it up for PEACE. They had fun creating a class picture symbolizing peace for Hunt’s wall in the cafe. The students also participated in a “Peace” essay contest writing about how they demonstrate peace in their home, school and community. Here are three examples of how our students show peace. From: Shanessa L., 3rd Grade, Mr. Artieda’s Class I will show peace in my community and my school by being respectful and kind to others. I will lead by example to show kids in school how to be kind and respectful. I will also volunteer in

my community to help the elderly and feed the homeless people. From: Joseph J., 3rd Grade, Mr. Nussbaum’s Class Wow, when I think of peace, I think of everyone sharing and getting along. I think of many other things when I think about peace. I think of how I can show peace at my home, in my community, and my school. For example, at home I can be helpful with chores. Another way I can show peace at home is being respectful. I can show peace in the community by picking up the trash. Finally, a way I can show peace at school is being responsible and kind to one another. Gabrielle Bogle, 3rd Grade, Ms. Nigro’s Class I show peace at home by sharing, caring, being helpful and not arguing with my sister. I show peace in my community by being polite in my neighborhood and helping people, my friends and neighbors. I can show peace at school by not being a bystander or a bully, not hurting others, following rules and most importantly, LISTEN TO YOUR PRINCIPAL!!

MARJORY STONEMAN DOUGLAS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS HAVE CULTURE! B

orn in to a family of musicians, choreographers and dancers, Rebeca Benarroch, Director of the multicultural show, has been a dancer since early childhood. She began training as a Flamenco Dancer while in preschool and was participating with the production of shows for her mother’s preschool by the age of five. While in her early teens, Rebeca began instructing in one of the only Venezuelan schools offering instruction in Flamenco. Rebeca attended Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School where, while in her senior year in 2011, she and her family triumphantly directed the school’s multicultural show for the first time. After she graduated, Rebeca no longer participated in the show until 2013 when her sister, Andrea, a Spanish Club member, was asked if Rebeca would be interested in directing again. The 2013 show was a smashing success. Having drawn on her experience from participation in countless shows over her life, the production gained momentum and word spread about the international experience on display, allowing each of the 700 available seats for the show to be sold out! “As a Marjory Stoneman Douglas alumnus and Director of the Spanish Club Multicultural Assembly, I had the privilege to work with students from across the globe to create a show to remember. In the year 2013, ‘Multicultural Airlines’ invited the audience to embark on a journey around the world experiencing different Spanish, European and American cultures through dance.” In 2013, only 40 students auditioned; all were selected. Many had dance experience; others did not. By reinforcing self-esteem, self-confidence, family values, friendship and empathy, the show became a revolutionary performance.

Within three months, 40 students came as strangers, earned each other’s trust and friendship, and left as family. Rebeca stated, “I have always believed that dance is a language that brings everyone together.” This year, the Spanish Club Multicultural Assembly was presented with over 115 students at the September 23rd tryouts. Joyfully overwhelmed, Rebeca stated, “I cannot express how thrilled I was when I saw this many students auditioning to be part of another show.” This year, the show hosts more than 10 clubs and organizations. It is the first time in the history of the school that such a collection of current students and former alumni have worked together to create a high quality, professional production. As it was last year, the unforgettable December 9th production will take place at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Auditorium and will be open to the public. By Rebeca’s side in production are her sister Andrea, a talented dancer, singer and actress; her brother, Alejandro, who has co-choreographed all of the numbers in the show; as well as family friends Marcela Rodriguez and her family. EcoKids Club and EcoKids Bilingual Preschools, where Rebeca is the Flamenco and Salsa instructor, are again sponsoring the 2014 show. Rebeca teaches students of all ages, incorporating techniques she has gained through her studies in Early Childhood Education. When asked about her future, Rebeca smiled. “Dance will always be part of my life. Thanks to dance, I’ve had the privilege of meeting people from around the world, learning about different cultures and helping others to do the same.” For ticket information, please contact Rebeca Benarroch at EcoArts Studio, located in Royal Palm Plaza (10359 Royal Palm Blvd in Coral Springs, FL), at (954) 755-8800.

Ramblewood Elementary Celebrates Peace Day S

eptember 21 is International Day of Peace, also known as Peace Day. Since the 21st was on a Sunday this year, many schools participated in the celebration on the Friday before, or the Monday after. To prepare for this event, all of our students joined in by producing works of art in Mrs. Sandy Bachmann’s art class. She introduced the concept of peace by having students listen to John Lennon’s Imagine and then discussed the lyrics and the meaning of peace, both global and here in school. Kindergarten students created peace posters in their art classes, which were hung up in hallways throughout the school, depicting peaceful images, words and phrases. Students in grades 1st through 5th made pinwheels constructed of paper and drinking straws, which they decorated with marker.

Friday’s event at Ramblewood Elementary School in Coral Springs involved “planting” the Pinwheels for Peace. One side of the Pinwheels had the images and symbols of peace, and the other side had their thoughts and wishes about war, violence, bullying as well as togetherness, friendship, love and hope. The students went outside with their classroom teachers to plant their pinwheels and many students took a moment of silence to make a peace wish for what they wanted to see in the world. The story is, that the wind will carry their wishes throughout the world to be heard, and maybe some day, their wishes will come true. Many of the classroom teachers had their classes accompany this event with their own lessons on peace with essays and stories. September 21st is definitely a day worth celebrating!

orest Glen Middle School, under the leadership of Ronald Forsman, Principal, continues to stay abreast of the latest educational initiatives of the 21st Century in order to challenge and meet the ever so changing needs of our students. The Pre-Quantum Leap advanced academic program has been home to Forest Glen for many years. This current school year, we have added an additional innovative program and two technology programs that provide our students an opportunity to be globally ahead of the rest. In August 2014, Forest Glen implemented its first Honors Academy, in which students take high-level classes in preparation for high school honors courses. Like the Pre-Quantum Leap Program, the Honors Academy is by application only. Both Pre-Quantum Leap and the Honors Academy provide the opportunity for students to participate in the Linking Educational Employment Opportunities (LEEO) program. LEEO provides Microsoft courses leading to industry certification and job readiness by 12th grade. Also new to Forest Glen this school year is the Digital Infusion Program. Our teachers are active learners in on-going and regular professional development to transition their classrooms to digital learning environments. Forest Glen is always striving to prepare our students for college and beyond by giving them a jump-start in taking high school credit courses while enrolled in middle school. Music Is In the Air C

ountry Hills Elementary has ventured into a new experience in the arts this 2014-15 school year. Approximately 40 of our 5th graders are receiving band as a Specials class twice a week this year. Mr. Piccinelli, the Coral Springs Middle School Band Director, comes over twice a week to provide band instruction to the students involved. He states, “It is really special to have 5th graders involved in band at this age. No one else in the county is providing this opportunity at this time and it gives the students a head start before coming to middle school.” The parents of these students were approached with this option at the end of the school year last year. Students who chose to participate were able to choose their instruments before the school year began.

The students really seem to enjoy going to band. Once they enter the room, they start their individual warm-ups before Mr. Piccinelli leads the group warm

up. “I feel good being a part of something like this,” says Kyle Dunn, one of the trumpet players. Skylar Andriesse says, “It’s a fun pastime and I also get to practice my music at home.” She plays the trombone. There are so many wonderful reasons to join band. Having the skill to perform a musical instrument has been one of the most cherished accomplishments throughout history. Students who decide to learn to play an instrument can use this skill and knowledge for the rest of their lives. There is nothing like the joy of performing music with friends. It happens every day in school groups and continues for adults who still like to play in community bands and orchestras or for those who perform professionally. In all cases, performing music can be an exhilarating experience.

eptember 11, 2001 was a heartbreaking day in American History. However, the memories stay ingrained in the hearts and minds of many who were affected, years after the catastrophe. 9/11 is something that should be remembered, respected, and acknowledged, every day of the year. This year members of Coral Springs DECA took action to spread the word and leave an imprint on the student body of Coral Springs Charter School through their campaign entitled 9/11 on 9/12. The campaign works to educate students on the lasting effects of 9/11 and show them that 9/11 is a big deal on every day of the year. The point of DECA’s campaign is to make sure that the tragedies of this day are never forgotten and constantly push us, as a society, to seek peace. The first event of the campaign was the CSCS “Jeans Day” that took place on Friday 9/12. The jeans day was one of the

most successful days in Charter’s history, collecting over $1,600. The money from the “jeans day” was donated to Tuesday’s Children, a charity that assists children affected by 9/11 and other acts of terrorism. Coral Springs Charter DECA could not be happier with the help and support from the entire Coral Springs Charter family and would like to sincerely thank all those who participated. The next major event for 9/11 on 9/12 is a community wide dinner night at Wings Plus on Sample Road on Wednesday, November 12th. CSCS invited the entire student body as well the community to help them spread their campaign’s message while enjoying their favorite wings. 9/11 was not just a one-day event, but rather a day that changed how Americans live. The 9/11 on 9/12 public relations campaign is determined to make 9/11 a day to always be remembered.

T

he kindergarteners at Park Trails Elementary School celebrated diversity this month by participating in many activities to commemorate various Hispanic contributions to the United States. Students rotated throughout the ten kindergarten classes and were exposed to different and exciting pieces of Hispanic culture from all over the world! Students got a glimpse into the artwork of Joan Miro from Spain and completed works of art similar in style and color. They then celebrated Mexico by sampling traditional foods, music, and attire as well as viewing authentic Mexican relics, art, traditions, and artifacts. Finally, our kindergarten students were able to create their very own picture dictionary of newly learned Spanish words bringing together our students from Cuba, Argentina, and Columbia. All in all it was a very educational day and our students gained a solid understanding and appreciation for many Hispanic cultures and customs!

The school year got off to a “chilling” start at Parkside Elementary.

Within the first week Principal, Laneia Hall, received an ALS Ice Bucket Challenge from Steve Carruth, Principal of Coral Glades High School. Within the 24 hour time limit she responded to the challenge as the entire student body and staff gathered on the school’s basketball court to witness her having a large cooler of ice water dumped on her and her son, Madden. Just prior to the experience Mrs. Hall had the opportunity make her own challenges. Among those she challenged were a couple principal colleagues, Larry Barretto (Assistant Principal) and Mrs. Abby Freedman, School Board Member for District 4. By the end of the afternoon Mrs. Freedman had responded with an acceptance to the challenge. The following morning the student body and staff gathered in the cafeteria. Mrs. Freedman took time to speak to the students and staff regarding the relevance of the Ice Bucket Challenge and it’s implications in the effort to provide both awareness and financial support for ALS. She was a good sport as she sat within a small pool and a cooler of ice water was poured on her. We are thrilled to have become a D5 school this year. D5 (D for digital and 5 for fifth grade) is a Broward County Public Schools initiative that includes providing each fifth grader with a laptop for use in class and at home. The fifth grade teachers

received training and ongoing support in how to effectively use the computers with their students to support their education along with guiding them on how to utilize the vast number of resources that will support and advance their learning. Beyond the school day, Parkside families have also been supporting the school through their attendance at Open Houses, PTA functions, and Partners in Education events. It’s going to be a great year at Parkside Elementary where “Learning is Natural.”

et’s get the month started with our monthly PTA Board Meeting on November 5th. Riverglades PTA Board welcomes all members and non-members to join in and see what we have in store for the year. This meeting provides a great opportunity to get involved, learn about upcoming events, and see how the PTA and your involvement can support our school. B–1, G-10….BINGO! Get your cards ready for Riverglades Bingo Night, also on November 5th. This fun-filled evening is a blast for parents and kids and a chance to play a few rounds of bingo, win some prizes and enjoy some food. Who doesn’t enjoy all of the anticipation of hearing that last number called out? Let’s think about giving! Holiday time is another great opportunity to help others in need. During the week of November 11th – 14th, Riverglades Outreach Program will be collecting (in the front of the school) for the annual Thanksgiving Harvest Drive. This drive helps provide families and individuals with non-perishable food items and staples during this holiday season. The importance of giving is a great lesson for our children to learn – we are never too young to lend a hand. Report Card day is here…. and nothing says ‘great

job’ like our traditional Yogurtcraze Back to School Fundraiser on November 13th. Enjoy something cool on Friday and show your Riverglades Elementary spirit. Did you forgot to smile or didn’t get your picture taken last month? If you missed fall picture day last month, get ready for fall picture make-up day, November 19th. Now it’s time to wrap. Look forward to grabbing some paper, scissors, and tape and letting your skills be seen. On December 9th–10th, it’s Holiday Gift Wrap time. The PTA and volunteers (that could be you!) will lend their hands to help wrap gifts from the teachers and staff members at Riverglades. It’s a fun time and great way to get in the holiday spirit and get ready for our Riverglades Holiday Shop which will be open December 8th-12th for business. Help us continue to GO GREEN! Check out our website at http://www.myvlink.org/rivergladeselementarypta/ if you haven’t already – be sure to sign up, check out all the happenings and opt in to receive school updates. Here’s your chance to digitally get school news and purchase your Spirit Wear, Student Directory, and PTA Membership, donate, become a Partner in Education, and so much more.

Hands-on Learning with Coral Springs Elementary School

Vonda L. Oliver, Ed.S, Principal

We are off to a great start!!

Coral Springs PreK - 6th Grade is dedicated to addressing the growth and needs of all children. Our teachers are eagerly collaborating in professional learning communities to ensure students will receive high quality studentcentered instruction. Our students are actively engaged in hands-on learning activities to make certain students are moving towards Career and College Readiness. We celebrated our first College Day on September 18th. Staff and many students wore

their college T-shirts. This will be an ongoing event at Coral Springs. Additionally, our students demonstrated signs of PEACE embracing peace at our school on PEACE Day. In an effort to touch all of our students, we are offering various clubs and activities across the grade levels. For the musically inclined, Mr. Knott has started our chorus program. Students will have the opportunity to perform in different venues around the community. We also offer a Coding Club for students interested in Computer Science. Finally, students in grades 4th - 6th will have the opportunity to participate in our Basketball Club. Coral Springs PreK - 6th Grade is working to guarantee all students are well-rounded citizens. Our district’s initiative is Just Care to be the BEST. Based on the atmosphere of our school’s culture, we are Caring to be the BEST!
