May is Mother’s Day and I’d like to thank all the mothers for all their hard work and dedication to their children and families. As another school year comes to an end, I hope your children have had a wonderful and memorable year. Remember to thank your teachers, tutors, instructors, and coaches for all their hard work and dedication to your children this past year. A little thank you goes a long way.

Welcome Summer! Those long, lazy days of summer will soon be upon us. It’s a time for relaxed schedules, family vacations and of course, summer camp! As your children grow and mature this summer, they will develop new interests, talents and hobbies and will make new friends. Now is the perfect time to find the right camp, program, sports & activities that they can enjoy all summer long. Our cities have a whole host of camps, classes, sports & programs lined up for your children, and you will find them right here in the pages ahead.

This summer issue features a variety of day camps, weekly camps and camp sessions. Whether it be a Memorial Day parade or July 4th fireworks display, Father’s Day BBQs and more, you’ll find it all right here in the Events Directory. Let’s be sure to celebrate all the Fathers this June, in honor of Father’s Day and thank them for all they do for their families.

I’d like to thank our issue sponsor Baptist Health that’s located right in Plantation, ready to serve all your family’s healthcare needs. And, thank you for your continued support and patronage to our clients. Please be sure to let them know you found them in Sports & Activities Directory Central Broward.

My Best to you!

Dear Cooper City Residents,

As the days grow longer and summer draws closer, Cooper City is once again buzzing with opportunities to come together, stay active, and make memories with family and friends.

Our Parks and Recreation team has prepared a vibrant lineup of events to keep our community connected throughout the upcoming months. Whether you’re joining us for the Bike Rodeo, Safety and Health Fair on May 17, casting a line with your little one at the Father’s Day Fishing Derby on June 7, or dancing to live music and sampling delicious bites at Eat to the Beat on June 27, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Later in the season, we invite you to challenge your strategic side at the Mayor’s Chess Challenge on September 6, get hands-on at Touch-A-Truck on September 13, and discover your next favorite story at our Community Book Swap on September 26.

As we embrace all that this season has to offer, I would like to take a special moment to wish a happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing moms, grandmothers, and mother figures in our community. Your compassion and commitment inspire us, and we thank you for the love you give so selflessly every day. At the same time, I’d like to wish a happy Father’s Day to all my fellow dads, grandfathers, and father figures across Someplace Special this coming June!

Hello Davie Residents,

It’s hard to believe that it’s almost time for another exciting summer in Cowboy Town USA, Davie, Florida! As we continue to celebrate the Town’s upcoming centennial birthday, we will have a wide variety of recreational programs and special events for all our Town of Davie Residents and visitors to enjoy over the next few months.

This summer, the Town will continue offering community events that will honor our military and veterans, celebrate the birth of our incredible country, and bring people together in our numerous open spaces. On Monday, May 26, the Town of Davie and the Boy Scouts will honor our fallen heroes during our annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony. The parade will start at 10:00AM from the Fire Administration Building and travel to the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds where the ceremony will pay homage to the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the United States of America.

Join us at Bamford Sports Complex on Friday, July 4, for our annual Independence Day Celebration, “Fun on the Fourth”, to commemorate the birthday of our incredible nation. Once again, this will be a Davie Resident only event featuring fireworks and a luminous drone show that will highlight the many unique characteristics of Davie! Fun times will be had from 6:00PM-9:00PM, with live music, food trucks, and games and activities for the entire family. Don’t forget to bring your blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy the best fireworks display in South Florida! All resident-attendees must preregister for this event.

Also, this summer, Town of Davie anglers of all skill levels will come together again for a day of fishing and fun. On Saturday, August 2, the annual Take-A-Kid Fishin’ Rodeo will take place, set against the picturesque backdrop of the Town of Davie Golf and Country Club. This catch and release event, which focuses on conservation and sportsmanship, allows the entire family to enjoy a morning of camaraderie and the great outdoors. Prizes will be awarded for various categories of fish caught, including the biggest and most unusual catch. The $10 entry fee includes a t-shirt, give-a-ways, raffle prizes, lunch, and bait. Don’t miss your chance to cast your line and make unforgettable memories. When looking through the Sports & Activities Directory remember whether it’s youth sports, fitness, swimming, recreation classes, or community events, the Town of Davie Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Department has activities for everyone in your family. For more information about any Davie program, please call (954) 327-3941. As always, see you in the parks, and remember to like us on Facebook.

Sincerely,

Greetings Plantation Residents:

I hope this letter finds you in great spirits as we embrace the vibrant summer season ahead! I am excited to share with you a lineup of stellar events that will foster a sense of community spirit and create lasting memories for our families.

We kick off our summer festivities with the Helen B. Hoffman Plantation Library’s annual Teddy Bear Picnic on May 3. Bring your favorite teddy bear and enjoy a morning filled with fun activities. May is also a time to celebrate mothers! Our Mother’s Day trip to see “Peter Pan” will take place on May 10. It’s a fantastic opportunity to enjoy this classic tale with your favorite lady. The following week, on May 17, join us at the Jim Ward Community Center for Kids to Parks Day. At the end of the month, we will honor our fallen service members. Please join us for our Memorial Day Service on May 26 at Veterans Park. This solemn occasion will allow us to pay tribute to those who served and sacrificed for our freedom and future.

As we move into June, we are thrilled to announce the Summer Reading Kickoff at the Helen B. Hoffman library on June 5. It’s a perfect way to encourage our young readers to dive into new adventures through books.

In July, the spirit of independence will shine as we host our Independence Day parade, followed by a spectacular concert and fireworks display. Let’s come together to celebrate our nation’s birthday in style! This year’s theme is “The Red, White and Blue.” Don’t miss the Daddy-Daughter Dance: A Night in Hollywood on July 11. This enchanting evening promises to be a memorable experience for fathers and daughters alike.

As summer winds down, please mark your calendars for our fun-filled MotherSon Rumble in the Jungle party on August. 1. I’m sure a wild time will be had by all!

Finally, I invite you to join us for the Plantation Police Department’s National Night Out at Pine Island Park on August 5. This event is an excellent opportunity to connect with our local law enforcement and promote community safety. We are looking forward to a summer filled with joy, friendship, and community spirit. Let’s make the most of these exciting events and create wonderful memories together!

Mayoral info: I provide information regularly and you can have my newsletter emailed to your inbox. I want to lift the curtain off local government and spell out exactly what we’re doing. I think that makes for a better city. I also recently added a “Mayor’s Minute” video that you can receive every Monday. The goal of the one-minute video is to give you an idea of what is coming up that week (only). If you’re like me, you especially lock in your weekly plans on Monday.

You may contact me directly via email at Mayor@Plantation.org.

Sincerely,

Superhero Swim Academy’s mission is to inspire creativity and imagination through swim lessons and our Head Swim Instructor Coach Pam ensures the mission is met each day she steps in the pool.

At just 15 years old, Coach Pam discovered her passion for swimming and teaching, laying the foundation for a career that would transform countless lives. With over 20 years of experience teaching swimming lessons, Coach Pam is more than just a swim instructor; she’s a mentor and creative force that fits in perfectly at Superhero Swim Academy.

Pam’s journey in the world of aquatics began two decades ago, and over the years, she has taught thousands of children how to swim, building their confidence stroke by stroke, and educating the parents of the techniques behind the lessons. Her ability to transform lessons into imaginative, engaging adventures is her true superpower and everyone benefits from having Coach Pam around. It’s this unique approach where playfulness and intensity come together in the pool.

Pam’s expertise doesn’t stop at swim lessons.

She’s also a dedicated mom, and she brings that same nurturing spirit to every class she teaches. Her deep understanding of what parents want for their children—safety, progress, and joy—guides everything she does. Outside of Superhero Swim Academy, Pam is a dedicated swim team coach, where she helps more advanced swimmers refine their technique and push their potential. This means she understands the full spectrum of swimming, from first splashes to competitive strokes.

Coach Pam’s well-rounded knowledge of the swim world, combined with her passion and creativity from day one has matched up with Superhero Swim Academy’s mission, values, and beliefs.

Superhero Swim Academy is lucky to have Pam as part of the team to help train both Superhero coaches and swimmers.

Coach Pam isn’t just a swim coach—she’s a superhero in her own right.

S

ummer break can be a welcome pause from the demands of the school year, but for children with deficits in learning or behavioral difficulties, the lack of structure and academic support can widen existing gaps. With the right strategies and support summer can become a valuable time for growth, self-regulation, and confidence-building.

MAINTAIN A ROUTINE - Summer should feel relaxed and provide opportunity for ….fun! Children with learning or behavioral challenges often benefit from predictable schedules. Create a daily routine that includes consistent wake-up times, meal schedules, playtime, and bedtime. This can help reduce anxiety and behavioral outbursts. Incorporating structured activities, (even if short and fun), will keep your child engaged and help duplicate the structure of the school year.

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES should be included in day to day activity. For children with learning difficulties, summer offers a chance to reinforce academic skills without the pressure of grades. Reading together daily, using educational games, or incorporating math into real-life activities like cooking or budgeting for a family outing can keep skills sharp. If a child struggles significantly, add the help of a tutor, an educational specialist or enrolling in a summer program tailored to their needs. Lastly, if there are concerns about diagnosable academic difficulties, reach out to a psychologist’s office to inquire about an evaluation.

Behaviorally, summer is an ideal time to work on EMOTIONAL

REGULATION and SOCIAL SKILLS. Without the stress of academic performance, children may be more open to practicing coping techniques and engaging in guided social situations. Activities like team sports, art classes, or cooperative games can provide opportunities for growth in a low-stakes environment. For children with more significant behavioral needs, parent-led behavior plans can be effective. These can include goal-setting with small rewards for positive behaviors, consistent consequences for misbehavior, and daily check-ins to reflect on progress. These should be provided by a Child Psychologist or licensed child mental health professional.

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT and SUPPORT are CRITICAL.

Summer can be an opportunity for parents to strengthen their bond with their child, observe their patterns, and understand what strategies work best. Positive reinforcement and patience go a long way in shaping behavior and boosting self-esteem. If the child sees that their efforts are acknowledged and valued, they are more likely to stay motivated and resilient. Finally, summer is a time for rest and fun, both of which are essential to a child’s development. For children with learning or behavioral issues, balancing work with play, structure with freedom, and learning with rest is paramount. With thoughtful planning and an understanding of their unique needs, the summer can become a powerful time of growth, healing, and joy. Notso very long ago, if you had an illness or injury that couldn’t wait for your regular doctor’s office hours, the emergency room (ER) at your local hospital was your only option. Today, your choices have multiplied.

Baptist Health, for instance, has emergency departments in all 12 of its area hospitals, as well as several freestanding emergency departments and dozens of Urgent Care and Urgent Care Express locations across the region.

So when should you go to one or the other? Resource editors spoke with David Mishkin, M.D., an emergency medicine specialist with Baptist Health, who offered helpful tips on when – and where – you should seek care when waiting to see a doctor tomorrow isn’t an option.

Do you tend to see an increase in Urgent Care and ER visits during the winter virus season?

Yes, recently we’ve been seeing a significant increase in respiratory infections across all of our Baptist Health Urgent Care locations and Emergency Rooms. These are mostly viral, such as influenza, which has been extremely active this season and COVID-19, which is still present but not in the numbers we’ve seen in previous years.

Gastrointestinal illness is also very common this time of year. Increased travel, changes in weather, and gatherings with family and friends are all contributing factors. Norovirus, a gastrointestinal virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea, has been active in South Florida this winter.

Can these illnesses be treated in an urgent care setting?

When people come down with illnesses like these, which can very often present suddenly or acutely, they’re looking for both evaluation and symptomatic relief. Most of these illnesses will resolve themselves in time but patients very often will need additional supportive medications to feel better. Our Urgent Care locations and emergency rooms are readily available to help evaluate and manage them so they can get back to feeling better as soon as possible.

What about a virtual visit – is that an option for someone who needs urgent care?

Virtual visits are a convenient first-line resource that lets you quickly connect with a provider who can help diagnose and treat your symptoms and even guide you to where to get care if you need to be seen in person. We encourage patients to use our virtual urgent care option on our convenient and secure Baptist Health PineApp.

What are the primary differences in services provided by urgent care versus emergency care?

There is a lot of overlap here for minor medical conditions, but our emergency rooms are equipped to evaluate and treat our sickest patients, those with more life-threatening or serious conditions. It is important to always call 911 first when you or a loved one is experiencing a life-threatening medical emergency. Every minute matters.

If a person is feeling sick, when should they seek urgent or emergency care?

It depends on what your symptoms are, along with your past medical history. We advise patients who are older, who have chronic medical conditions or significant symptoms, to be seen as early as possible. Baptist Health Virtual Urgent Care is a great resource to help patients make those decisions.

If a person is injured, when should they consider urgent or emergency care?

Injuries should be evaluated promptly. Patients may need wound care, splinting or other acute treatment. All of our Urgent Care and Urgent Care Express locations are equipped with x-rays and more advanced imaging is available in all of our hospital emergency rooms.

Why should someone consider Baptist Health for urgent or emergency care?

Every one of our Baptist Health sites across South Florida is staffed with highly trained nurses and clinicians who provide compassionate, highquality care for the ill and injured. Our network of same-day care services work together to help our patients navigate any acute or sudden medical need. Baptist Health Virtual Urgent Care is quick and easy. The providers are available 24/7

and can help with diagnosis and treatment and can assist in referring patients to our in-person location if needed. Our Urgent Care locations are staffed by board-certified physicians and offer onsite labs and advanced imaging like x-rays and CT scans if needed. Lastly, our ERs are where you go for more serious concerns. Regardless of where you get care at Baptist Health, we take a great deal of pride in this responsibility and are readily available to help when needed.

Any parting thoughts for our readers?

Make sure to take care of both your physical and mental health. Exercise, nutrition and sleep should be a priority for everyone.

If you have an illness or injury that needs immediate attention, there is a Baptist Health Urgent Care location or Emergency Room near you, ready and waiting to provide the high-quality, compassionate care Baptist Health is known for. Mirror Lake Elementary Magnet School recently hosted an exciting and meaningful fundraiser, The Dolphin Dash, to raise funds for a much-needed pavilion to cover the school’s basketball court. This initiative brought together students, parents, teachers, and community members in a display of school spirit, fitness, and philanthropy.

The Dolphin Dash took place on Saint Patrick’s Day, with students enthusiastically dressed in all green to celebrate the occasion. The event encouraged Pre-K to 5th Grade students to complete laps around the school and neighborhood, demonstrating their commitment to both fitness and fundraising. Parents were also invited to join their children on the run, making it a fun and inclusive family activity.

One of the most impressive aspects of The Dolphin Dash was the dedication of students in spreading the word about the fundraiser. Many took to social media to promote the cause, encouraging friends, family, and the local community to contribute. Their efforts were instrumental in attracting donations from a variety of generous local businesses, making a significant impact on the campaign. Mirror Lake even received donations from all 50 states!

The fundraiser received an overwhelming response from businesses eager to support Mirror Lake Elementary’s mission. Several community donors played a crucial role in bringing the school closer to its goal. Also, this event could not have been possible without

the support of the Plantation Police Department. They made sure all participants were safe. Community involvement was another key highlight of The Dolphin Dash. Many local residents joined the students in running laps, reinforcing the strong bond between Mirror Lake Elementary and its surrounding community. The event was a true testament to the power of collective action in supporting education and student well-being.

With the tremendous support received, Mirror Lake Elementary is now very close to reaching its fundraising goal. However, the campaign is still ongoing, and donations were accepted through the end of March. The school remains hopeful that with continued contributions, they will successfully secure the pavilion, providing much-needed shade and protection for students using the basketball court.

The Dolphin Dash has proven to be more than just a fundraiser—it was a celebration of community spirit, school pride, and the importance of working together to improve the educational experience for students. Mirror Lake Elementary Magnet School extends its deepest gratitude to everyone who participated, donated, and supported the event. The success of this initiative serves as a powerful reminder that when a community comes together, incredible things can be achieved.

Mirror Lake Elementary Magnet School is located at 1200 NW 72nd Avenue, Plantation, 33317 and can be reached at (754) 322-1700.

Artificial Intelligence, Drama, Culinary Arts, and Competition Law are just a few of the special programs and opportunities that are offered at Nova High School.

Nova High School’s Artificial Intelligence students recently won $5,000 in the prestigious KPMG KnoPro Artificial Intelligence Business Revolution Challenge. The team—Adrian Rincon, Jan-Carlos Reyes Santana, Kymani Sarju, and Isaac Santiago—secured first place with their innovative “Scrooge App.” The competition encouraged students to explore how Artificial Intelligence can solve real-world business problems while fostering positive global impacts. Nova High’s success highlights our forward-thinking approach to Artificial Intelligence’s role in transforming industries. On January 29, 2025, CTACE Director, Loli Formoso and District Curriculum Leader, Bryan O’Toole visited the school, alongside Principal Awofadeju, to celebrate this remarkable achievement.

On February 11, 2025, Weight of Words completed its 14th season with a powerful performance at the Broward Center of Performing Arts, reaching over 800 Broward County students. The production, which addresses the effects of bullying, delivered an impactful message of hope and resilience. To honor this achievement, the drama department received a generous gift, presented by Nova Titan Drama alumna Alyssa Torres and Nova Eisenhower teacher Natalie Stuart on behalf of The HEAL Behavioral Health. This special contribution included tickets for students to attend the premiere

of Wicked and a $1,000 donation to support the theater program.

On December 7th, Nova High School’s Thespian Troupe 4611 showcased their talent at the District 13 Thespian Festival, delivering an outstanding performance. The troupe earned 20 Superior ratings, 7 Excellent ratings, and 2 Honorable Mentions. Additionally, the troupe received two Critics’ Choice Awards: one in Small Group Musical, featuring seniors Jaylen Dent, Audwin Nestor, and Sebastian Samson, and another in Makeup Design, created by senior Eva Casco. Thespian Troupe 4611 continued on to the Florida State Thespian Festival in March 2025.

Our Culinary Arts department earned a Gold medal for the 2nd year in a row at the Skills USA competition (Baking and Pastry) at South Tech, 2nd place in the FRLA Broward Pie Contest (Savory) and 1st place in the Gingerbread House competition.

Lastly, our Nova Competition Law Team sponsored by Mrs. Kristin Murphy came in 2nd in the state for the We the People Competition and is headed to Nationals in Virginia in April 2025. If they win, this would be a three-peat for the Nova Competition Law Team. We wish them well.
