Rencontres d’Arles
The Arles Photo Festival
After the travel restrictions imposed during the worst part of the pandemic, I finally had the opportunity to visit my favourite photo festival.
Arles is an historic town in the Provence area of France and has hosted a photography festival since 1970. I have visited many times, my last visit in 2019 was the 50th anniversary of this three month long celebration of visual lens based art.
After two years of lockdown I was able to visit last month. Understandably there was quieter feel as the visitors were fewer in number as was the volume of fringe events but there was so much to see and to experience. There were 40 main exhibitions and the usual fun element of photographers pasting their work on outside walls for people to enjoy. These pasted pictures also give photographers interesting backdrops to use in their own photography as I have done here.
My other two photographs were observed around the town. I cannot do justice to this festival in one article so I will continue this subject in next month’s issue. You can see more of my images here: www.instagram.com/shoreham_steve
My main photograph captures the work of an artist known as DOUDOU. This monochrome work sets the scene for me to wait for a passer by in red clothing to add an accent of colour in the centre of the panoramic image.
