EQUITY RELEASE: HERE’S WHY THE RIGHT TO MAKE REPAYMENTS COULD CUT THE COST OF BORROWING Equity release can help boost your finances later in life. The way that interest is rolled up often means that people ended up with high levels of debt, but the new right to repayment could change that. Equity release allows you to access some of the wealth that’s tied up in your property, most commonly through a lifetime mortgage. Traditionally, you wouldn’t make any repayments. Instead, the interest accrued would be rolled up and paid once you passed away or moved into long-term care. It means the total amount of debt can quickly increase. Now, the right to make repayments could provide older homeowners with even more flexibility. What does the “right to repayment” mean? Equity release customers taking out a lifetime mortgage from a provider that meets the Equity Release Council standards from 28 March 2022 will be guaranteed the right to make penalty-free partial repayments of their loans. As a result, new customers will be able to offset the interest the debt is accruing and reduce their borrowing if they wish to. Rolling up interest can drastically increase how much you owe during your lifetime One of the drawbacks of equity release is that you can end up owing far more than you originally borrowed because of the way that interest is rolled up. The below table shows how interest adds up if repayments aren’t being made on an equity release loan of £50,000 that has an interest rate of 5%. As the interest is added to the loan amount each year, you go on to pay interest on the interest that T. 01273 774855 E. advice@pembrokefs.co.uk W. www.pembrokefinancial.co.uk

has previously been rolled up. As a result, the longer you have a lifetime mortgage, the quicker the total amount owed will rise. The new guarantee can mean you’re able to unlock property wealth while better managing the loan taken out against your home and reducing the interest. Is equity release right for me? Equity release can be a useful way to boost your finances in retirement, but it’s not the right option for everyone. You will usually need to be age 55 or older and own your own home to be able to use equity release to unlock property wealth. You should also consider how it fits into your overall plan and what your alternative options are. In some cases, depleting other assets you may hold, such as savings or investments, or downsizing makes more sense for your goals. Choosing to use equity release can also limit your other options. It could affect some means-tested benefits too.

Please contact us on 01273 774855 or email advice@pembrokefs.co.uk if you would like more information and quote reference PFSVL. As a mortgage is secured against your home or property, it could be repossessed if you do not keep up mortgage repayments. Think carefully before securing other debts against your home. Equity released from your home will be secured against it. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.

Exhibition of paintings, drawings and designs coming to the Shoreham Centre in September

Jon Peaty was a local artist who had an impact both locally and nationally.

His work included brand advertising, newspaper and magazine illustration, murals and cartoons. However, his first love was painting and this eventually became his main source of income. He held many one – man shows mainly in the UK but also in America and undertook portrait commissions on a regular basis. His own estimate was that he had painted some 3000 or more works. Painting is the field of work for which he would most want to remembered and so among the works exhibited there will be some 30 paintings.

Returning from war to Southwick, Jon also wanted to make a community contribution and he quickly got involved with the Southwick Community Centre and Southwick Players. His art skills were volunteered for a range of activities including Centre advertising and events, and sets and decor for the Southwick Players. He also founded the Southwick Art Club which continues to this day.

The exhibition ‘Jon Peaty – artist 1914-1991: A retrospective exhibition of paintings drawings and designs.’ opens at the Skyways Gallery at the Shoreham Centre, Pond Road on September 10th and runs until the 30th September (not Sundays).

ARN ROOFING LTD

Jon was known as a ‘character’ on the local scene, he had a great sense of fun and was a lover of landscape and nature. These qualities permeate the work on show.

This exhibition will be the first showing of Jon’s work since his death. It illustrates his range of talents and will be of historic and artistic interest. Members of the family will be at the gallery most days. If you have memories of Jon or maybe if you have one of his paintings, do come along, say hello and have a chat. Heritage Open Days come to Steyning Bring the family, have fun, and explore the town’s unique history on Saturday and Sunday, 17 and 18 September 2022 Free events: Heritage tours, exhibitions, talks and organ recitals Steyning will be taking part in the national Heritage Open Days scheme, England’s largest festival of history and culture, on Saturday and Sunday, 17th and 18th September 2022. This is the first time that the town is taking part in this national scheme, and events will also feature as part of the celebrated Steyning Food & Drink Festival. Events are open to all ages and are free of charge (although donations will be welcome). Steyning Parish Church

To coincide with the Heritage Open Days, a whole new self-guided audio tour is being launched by the Friends of Steyning Parish Church to reveal the hidden secrets and history of its special interior. The church is described as a ‘Norman gem’ and ‘the best in Sussex’ by Pevsner’s Buildings of England. Renowned for its expertly crafted 12th century nave, Romanesque sculpture, 500-hundred-yearold unique Tudor carved oak paneling and modern stained glass windows, the church has recently been fitted with state-of-the-art lighting to illuminate its full splendour. There is no need to book for the tour, just turn up with your smartphone. The church will be open 11.00 – 16:00 Saturday 17 and from 12:00 - 16:00 on Sunday 18 September, however visitors should note the times of the talks and recitals – see below. Further details of the tour on Friends of the Parish Church website, see below. Special events in the parish church will include two period organ recitals by Brian Sawyer, church organist, besides fascinating talks about how the church was built from its own historian, Sarah Leigh, ‘Built against the odds: how French abbots created Steyning Parish Church and made their peace with the Kings of England”. No booking needed. Talks on Saturday 17 September at 12:00 and Sunday 18 September at 14:00. Organ recitals on Saturday and Sunday at 15:00. Rifle Range Additionally, there will be the rare opportunity to take a walking tour of the historic Rifle Range in the heart of the South Downs. You will learn about the vital role played by the Range as a training

ground by the Sussex Rifle Volunteers who used it for target practice from 1860 onwards. WWII style refreshments also available. Booking for these hour-long tours is essential, see https://guestli.st/719733 Available 11:00-15:00, Sunday 18 September only.

Steyning Museum, Church Street Much of the town’s exciting social, economic and political history will be at your fingertips at The Steyning Museum which offers a treasure trove of exhibits suitable for all ages. A brand new exhibition will be on display giving the story of Steyning’s breweries – there were once two breweries in the town. There will also be an exhibition about historic Charlton Street, in the heart of the town’s conservation area, highlighting how it has changed since it was first built in the 1850s. Entrance to the museum is free of charge. Open every Wednesday to Sunday 10:00 – 16:00. Further details can be found at www.steyningmuseum. org.uk Homemade refreshments Tea, coffee and homemade cakes will be available on Saturday and Sunday afternoon from 15:00 to 17:00 hours at Penfold Hall in Vicarage Lane, which is next to the Museum and across the road from Steyning Parish Church. Pre-booking is essential for the Rifle Range tours. No booking required for other events

William Albery William Albery was born on the 5th September 1864 in Horsham, West Sussex. His father was the local saddler and harness maker and his parents attended St. Mary’s Church, Horsham where William was a choirboy. He was educated at Collyer’s School and of his schooldays once stated, “They could teach me more.” Upon leaving school he was sent to London to study engraving, but William never took up the trade and returned to work for his father. William took over the family business in 1877 at the age of 14.

In 1880, aged 16, William enlisted in the 2nd Volunteer Battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment. He was promoted to sergeant in 1888. William still attended church but was agnostic having been influenced by Thomas Paine’s ‘The Age of Reason’. In 1896 he became a casual member of the local Free Christian Church, its treasurer in 1904 and a trustee in 1910. During the First World War, William Albery was posted to the Home Defence Corps in 1915 and later discharged from military service on compassionate grounds. In 1920 he became one of the founding members of the Horsham Borough Silver Band where he played the coronet as he had done in the army. When elderly Henry Burstow, a cobbler, campanologist and singer was financially struggling, William Albery came up with the idea of documenting Henry’s memories of Horsham, to help him financially. The intention was first to produce a pamphlet about the town’s history, but Mr Thomas Gurnery Stedman suggested William instead write a book that included Henry Burstow’s vivid memories of bell ringing and also the songs he sang. The assembled book was sold to subscribers to raise money on behalf of Henry Burstow. William Albery became a historian and collected documents, deeds and newspapers that referenced Horsham. He was a frequent visitor to the Records Office and the British Museum Library to conduct research. He worked long hours and existed pretty much on chocolate alone during the day. He used his earnings as a

8

Collyer’s School

saddler to employ a Miss Drucker of London to translate medieval documents that were written in Latin. He wrote the book the ‘Parliamentary History of Horsham’ and it was well received when published in 1927. The sales of the book couldn’t cover the cost of publication however and it made a loss of £400. The book’s loyal readership then demanded that William Albery stand for political office himself and he reluctantly became a candidate in the council election. He was elected and used his position of office to establish the Horsham Museum. Among its first exhibits was a collection of saddles and harnesses. Having achieved what he had set out to do, he did not seek re-election. In 1935 he became president of the Federation Of Master Saddlers Of Great Britain. Then in 1943, William Albery wrote the miniature book ‘Horsham Under The Microscope’ which as the title suggested, could only be read with a microscope. This book raised £15 for the local hospital. He went on to research and write the book ‘A Millennium Of Facts In The History Of Horsham’ which was published in 1947 to great acclaim. William Albery was a charitable man who championed many a good cause. He often wrote letters critical of council inaction to the local newspaper when something needed to be done for the good of the people and he is remembered as being friendly to all that knew him. Male Facial

It is so British to talk about the weather, so let’s talk about it… it’s the Summer and it is currently very hot and very sunny and therefore everyone should be wearing factor 50 sun cream on their face.

Sussex Pathfinders Rambling Club

Do you enjoy country walks? Would you like to discover new places, and find like-minded people to walk with? Then Sussex Pathfinders could be the club for you.

Apart from wearing sun cream, what else should men be doing to keep their faces from looking like the bottom of a well-worn roman sandal? Number 1. Exfoliate Number 2. Cleanse Number 3. Serum Number 4. Moisturise Put down those disused Christmas gift sets, we are most definitely not talking lynx all over bodywash here! We are talking proper products made specifically for their very specific jobs. When doing your research for your exfoliator, cleanser, serum and moisturiser consider the brands ethics, your budget and your skin type. Mutiny have produced a great Face Serum, smells good, feels good and does exactly what is needed. I personally use this product as part of the hot cut throat shave service and cannot recommend it enough. Rencontres d’Arles

The Arles Photo Festival

After the travel restrictions imposed during the worst part of the pandemic, I finally had the opportunity to visit my favourite photo festival.

Arles is an historic town in the Provence area of France and has hosted a photography festival since 1970. I have visited many times, my last visit in 2019 was the 50th anniversary of this three month long celebration of visual lens based art.

After two years of lockdown I was able to visit last month. Understandably there was quieter feel as the visitors were fewer in number as was the volume of fringe events but there was so much to see and to experience. There were 40 main exhibitions and the usual fun element of photographers pasting their work on outside walls for people to enjoy. These pasted pictures also give photographers interesting backdrops to use in their own photography as I have done here.

My other two photographs were observed around the town. I cannot do justice to this festival in one article so I will continue this subject in next month’s issue. You can see more of my images here: www.instagram.com/shoreham_steve

My main photograph captures the work of an artist known as DOUDOU. This monochrome work sets the scene for me to wait for a passer by in red clothing to add an accent of colour in the centre of the panoramic image.
