Lions in the Community

Members of the Adur East Lions Club were out and about recently, spending some of the money raised by their various fundraising efforts.

On 26th February, several Members of the Club attended a school assembly at St Peter’s Catholic Primary School in Shoreham, to handover a cheque for the sum of £2,142.95. The money is being spent on specialist equipment for the School’s purposebuilt sensory room. This includes items such as sensory lights, tables, chairs, play dough, a radio, a bookcases, bean bags, books, headphones and ear protectors. Shown in the photo are some of the children, together with Adur East’s Lion President, Frances Burt, supported by Zone Chair, Claudine Rogers and other Club Members. Jasper the Lion also attended the event (and went down a treat with the children)!

Pictured receiving sanitary products donated from various regional Lions Clubs, including Adur East Lions, was Young Ambassador winner Isobel Hallworth of Hove. Isobel entered the Young Ambassador competition with her project, the Period Poverty Project, which is currently based in Brighton and Hove. The project aims to provide sanitary products to disadvantaged women, including students and the homeless. 17 year old Isobel was sponsored by Newhaven, Peacehaven & Seaford (NPS) Lions (who are 1 of the 5 Clubs in this area (called a Zone), which also includes Adur East (covering Shoreham, Southwick & Fishersgate), Brighton, Rottingdean & Saltdean and finally SEBI (an online Lions Club)). Sponsored by NPS to enter the Lions Young Ambassador Competition, this National Competition is aimed at recognising and encouraging young people for their community service involvement. Specifically aimed at 15-19 year olds, it broadens awareness of community service opportunities, enabling them to sharpen interview and communication skills. The Competition takes place through several stages

and by reaching the District Final, a bursary of £500 to spend on the project is awarded. By Winning at the final Multiple District level, Isobel was recently awarded a further £1,000. This is a project which, with the Lions support, she now hopes will be spreading to other areas. Quite apart from her

achievements with the Lions, Isobel is currently studying for the International Baccalaureate at College and is waiting to hear from an application to Oxford University. May we take this opportunity to congratulate her and wish her every success in her future endeavours. Adur East Lions Club

3 USEFUL WAYS A MORTGAGE BROKER CAN HELP YOU NAVIGATE A MARKET THAT CHANGES QUICKLY

Mortgage deals have a record low shelf life, and the market is changing quickly. If you’re searching for a new mortgage, it can make it difficult to find the right deal for you. In a situation like this, a mortgage broker can lend support.

THE AVERAGE MORTGAGE SHELF LIFE HAS FALLEN TO JUST 15 DAYS

According to a report in Mortgage Solutions, the average shelf life of a mortgage fell to a record low of 15 days at the start of 2023. It means deals are available for a little longer than two weeks before lenders pull them off the market.

If you’re searching the market for a mortgage, it can mean there’s added pressure. A deal you believe could be right for you, but you want some time to think about, may not be available when you’ve made a decision.

The figures also show that the number of mortgages available is on the rise, so you have more choice. While this is good news, it can make finding a mortgage overwhelming.

Here are three ways working with a mortgage broker in today’s market could be valuable.

1. A mortgage broker will help you understand the type of mortgage that’s right for you: Whether you’re a first-time buyer or are remortgaging your current home, understanding the type of mortgage that suits your needs can be difficult.

A mortgage broker can help you get to grips with the different options and explain the pros and cons of each. Having a clear idea about the type of mortgage you need means you can narrow down the market.

2. A mortgage broker will keep track of interest rates: One of the reasons mortgage deals are being pulled from the market so quickly is that interest rates are changing. Throughout 2022 and the start of 2023, the Bank of England gradually increased its base rate, which affected mortgages. There are large differences in interest rates available. Working with a mortgage broker to potentially access a lower interest rate could save you money in the short and long term.

3. A mortgage broker understands the criteria of each lender: One of the challenges of getting a mortgage is not only finding a deal that’s right for you but understanding how likely a lender is to approve your application.

Each lender will set its own criteria. A mortgage broker will take the time to understand your circumstances and select lenders that are more likely to say “yes” to your application.

Please contact us on 01273 774855 or email advice@pembrokefs.co.uk if you would like more information and quote reference PFSIS. Your home or property could be repossessed if you do not keep up mortgage repayments. Think carefully before securing other debts against your home.

The Adur Dog Swimming Race 1908

At the start of the 20th century attempts in Britain to establish a properly organised swimming race for Newfoundland dogs had ended in a fiasco.

Newfoundlands are a massive breed, originating in northeastern Canada and were once used to help fishermen haul in their nets. They were thought ideal as competitors for swimming races, as their oily coats are highly water resistant. However at the regatta in ShorehamBy-Sea, a swimming event for dogs was successfully introduced, though the competitors were a mix of breeds.

In October 1908, Shoreham held races in the river Adur for what was known as the southern championship in dog swimming. There were separate competitions for dogs over and under 25lb in weight. There were a fair amount of entries in each category, but the primitive arrangements and a misunderstanding as to exactly where the finishing point was located caused some dissatisfaction among owners. It also brought about the defeat of a local champion, a Beagle cross, in the chief competition. This dog had seemed to spectators to be groomed for swimming, as the fur of its tail was described as being sickle-shaped in appearance and serving the purpose of a rudder. For the past two years in succession the Beagle cross had won the Shoreham race, beating 28 other entrants on the first occasion. Although he was certainly the first to land on the town side of the River Adur in the 1908 race, having covered a distance of between 75 to 80 yards in 78 seconds, the Beagle cross was placed only third. The winner was a larger dog that was a cross between a Greyhound and Old English Sheepdog and the runner up was a flatcoated Retriever owned by a female visitor to Shoreham.

Popular opinion among spectators was that the Retriever would have, with a little coaching, won the race as he had a more powerful swimming stroke than any of the other competitors. He

swam with his head well up in the air and appeared to appreciate the task. Another firm favourite for the race had been a Sussex Spaniel, but the smaller, stockier dog had already tired itself out, because it could not be kept out of the water during the preceding events. These activities included the boat race and after the starting gun had been fired, the Spaniel had dashed into the river expecting to see retrieve a fallen game bird for his owner. The Sussex Spaniel is one of the oldest Spaniel breeds originated in the 1700s and first being officially recognised in 1855.

Fox Terriers did very well in the small dog race, and the local champion, Dick scored his third win in succession without being pressed. Great interest was taken in the canine swimming contests with visitors attending from across the county and beyond. A pleasing feature in the Shoreham events was that apart from one Fox Terrier, in the starting line up, every dog finished the course. Six members of the one family took a part, each owning a Fox Terrier, including the woman with the one that did not finish. These plucky dogs appeared to like the exercise so much that they continued to follow the winner. Spectators and owners alike found it was worth the pleasant walk of several miles to reunite with their dogs that had made such light work of swimming the river Adur.Judy Upton’s latest thriller ‘Sniff Them Out, Brownlow!’ about a pet detective and her sniffer dog has recently been published.

Worried about paying for long-term care?

With the social care reforms delayed until 2025, what steps could you take to help fund care costs?

It is estimated that around two in five (41%)* people in residential care in England are ‘self-funders’ who are paying for long-term care fees themselves.

Many of these self-funders will have been disappointed by the announcement of the two year delay to social care reforms, part of which included the much talked about cap on care costs. The cap means that people would pay no more than £86,000 for their care. It’s important to highlight that this only relates to ‘personal care’ costs and does not include the hotel and accommodation element of any care fees, which people would still need

to carry on paying, after they’d reached the personal care cap of £86,000. With the reforms pushed back until November 2025, the positive news is that there are steps you can take now to make sure that you’re paying your care fees in the most costeffective way, for as long as it’s needed.

Have you made a Will or is it up to date?

IF you die without a Will it can be a nightmare for those you leave behind and your estate may not pass to those you wished to benefit. Your estate would pass in accordance with the Intestacy Rules, which set out who will be entitled to inherit. If you have no living relatives and do not have a Will, your estate will pass to the Crown.

Why make a Will

A Will sets out who is to benefit from your money, property and possessions (your estate) after your death. There are many good reasons to make a Will including:

• You can decide what happens to your estate when you die.

• You may want to provide for your partner - some people think that after they have been living with their partner for a couple of years, they become ‘common law’ spouses with the same rights as married couples/ civil partners. This is not the case.

• You can appoint guardians for any children under the age of 18.

• If you have children from a previous relationship, you can ensure that those children also benefit from your estate, as well as providing for your partner or spouse and any other children.

• You can make sure you don’t pay more Inheritance Tax than is necessary.

• You can decide what should happen to pets.

• Property owned as ‘Joint tenants’ automatically passes to the surviving co-owner and you may want your share to pass to someone else instead, or pass it into a trust.

Although it is possible to write a Will yourself, it is advisable to use a qualified lawyer. Wills are legal documents and small errors can cause huge problems. There are various legal formalities that need to be followed and if these are not followed correctly, your Will may not be valid. Problems can not only be very costly but may also mean that your wishes are not met. A lawyer will be able to point out things that you may not have even considered and may be able to mitigate Inheritance Tax and potential care home costs.

Why Review your existing Will

If you already have a Will, you should review it regularly to make sure it still reflects your wishes. Reasons to review your Will may include: the arrival of new children/grandchildren; the death of a beneficiary, executor, trustee or guardian; a change in your financial circumstances or a change in the law or tax rules.

Many people don’t realise that entering into a marriage or civil partnership automatically revokes an existing Will (unless expressly made in contemplation of the marriage/civil partnership) and so you may think you have a valid will when in fact, you do not.

It’s all change for the group

For unattached men and women in the Worthing area, there are plenty of things to do, and somebody who has been bringing local activities to local people is Jackie Thwaites.

In May 2019 Jackie became a co-ordinator for The Group, a Sussex club for unattached men and women aged 55+. Now, she says, it’s time to hang up her organiser’s hat and simply enjoy the activities that the club has to offer. Happily, was no difficulty in finding somebody to run the Worthing club. Jackie has handed over the reins to Wendy Wetherfield.

The Group is now in its seventeenth year. It meets in Worthing on the first Monday evening of every month and also has four other venues; Brighton, Horsham, Lewes and Burgess Hill. Members receive an emailed diary twice a month.

Jackie says, “It’s been a privilege to introduce

people to The Group, and to witness the friendships that have been made. I am so pleased that Wendy is taking over, ensuring that our lovely club can continue”.

More information about the club can be seen at www.thegroup.org.uk

“My mum who has Alzheimer’s absolutely loves these sessions – it’s a wonderful activity that we can do together and she really comes alive.”

‘Eco Church’ – Caring for the environment at St Mary de Haura

Who hasn’t at some stopped for a moment in the churchyard at St Mary’s? It is one of the few places where you can escape the bustle of our busy town. Over the years, the trees have grown tall and it has become a haven for wildlife.

The Shoreham and District Ornithological Society have put up bird boxes, and they monitor birds nesting in the churchyard. Volunteers tend and garden both the graves and flower beds, and have planted gorgeous plants. It is not surprising that churchyards are often referred to as God’s acre.

Sitting in the churchyard, you can’t help be reminded that St Mary de Haura is more than just an ancient building – it’s an entire eco-system. The churchyard is now closed for burials and responsibility for its major upkeep rests with Adur and Worthing Council, who undertake regular grass-cutting and all the tree maintenance. Nonetheless, the church remains committed to protecting and preserving the beauty of the natural environment in and around the church and to reducing our environmental footprint as much as possible.

To take forward this environmental commitment, St Mary de Haura is involved in a project called ‘Eco Church’: a nationwide scheme which encourages churches to be greener and more environmentally aware. At St Mary’s we are examining our commitment to environmental responsibility in different areas of the church’s life, including our buildings and the churchyard. Part of this includes meeting a commitment set by the Church of England to attain net-zero emissions by 2023. But it also involves a

wider plan to show how we can become greener and more environmentally aware. For example, we are hoping to attract more wildlife to the churchyard by avoiding the use of pesticides and weed killers and are looking at keeping some areas of the grass unmown during May to encourage more

wildflowers.

Of course, this environmental mission carries unique challenges when it comes to the historic, Grade 1-listed building! For example, how can you insulate 900-year-old walls and masonry? How can you ensure energy-efficiency when electrical and heating systems are several decades old? Working in partnership with the Council, voluntary groups and local community is essential for making progress. So too is the contribution made by the Friends of St Mary’s, who seek to

Acupuncture for Pain Relief: A Safe and Effective Treatment

Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine originating in China over 2000 years ago. It involves the insertion of fine needles into specific points on the body to stimulate the flow of energy and promote healing. In recent years, acupuncture has gained popularity in the Western world as a safe and effective treatment for pain relief. In 2021, acupuncture was included by NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) as a recommended treatment option for chronic pain. To be included in these guidelines, means that acupuncture has been shown in many clinical trials to have robust results.

Acupuncture can be used to treat a variety of pain conditions. It has been shown that acupuncture works by stimulating the body’s natural painkilling endorphins and reducing inflammation by bringing fresh anti-inflammatory properties mobilised in the bloodstream to the site of pain. This addresses the lack of free-flow or stagnation the Chinese describe. In addition to the needle insertion, where indicated, the acupuncturist may use some of the other tools at their disposal which are part of a Chinese medicine approach. This could include Moxibustion, Cupping therapy, Electro-acupuncture and Gua Sha massage.

As well as pain relief, acupuncture can also have other health benefits, such as improving sleep, and reducing stress and anxiety. During the initial consultation, a comprehensive medical and lifestyle

history is taken which allows a diagnosis and refined treatment approach. In this way, the treatment is truly individual and holistic.

In conclusion, acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment for pain relief if you are looking for a natural and non-invasive way to manage your pain.

Shona Campbell is an acupuncturist who is registered with the British Acupuncture Council, and working from Shoreham Osteopathy Clinic.

Please visit her website www. acupuncturebysea.co.uk to find out more about her approach or ring the reception team at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre on 01273 567654 to make an appointment.

Plans to regenerate Shoreham Harbour site get green light

Proposals to regenerate a Shoreham Harbour brownfield site and give the area an economic boost have been approved. Our planning committee has agreed that the Frosts Cars site in Brighton Road can be developed to create 176 apartments, including dozens of affordable homes, and business space.

Councillors had rejected a previous application to develop the site, but supported this scheme after the owners agreed to reduce the height of the apartment blocks and to make a number of design improvements. In addition, we are working with Vivid, a registered provider of affordable homes to ensure that there would be a greater number of affordable homes than were originally proposed.

The scheme will include public green spaces, a tree-lined central avenue, large roof gardens for residents, riverside cycling and pedestrian pathways, boules court and a play park for children. The development will also boast energy efficient materials to retain heat, as well as being fitted with LED low energy lighting, with well lit public spaces and individual heat pumps to generate heating and hot water.

The Frosts project, in Shoreham’s Western Harbour Arm, is designed to give the district an economic boost, deliver new job opportunities and provide much-needed housing. At the meeting, Vivid indicated they were keen to take on the site and would be looking to utilise Homes England funding to provide up to 100% affordable housing with a mixture of low rent and shared ownership apartments.

Sustainable travel has also featured heavily and the developer has agreed to provide land for the A259 planned cyclepath and contributions towards other sustainable transport initiatives. The scheme would also provide 41% EV charging points and up to eight car club spaces. Our planning committee was keen to ensure that West Sussex County Council (WSCC) delivers improvements to transport infrastructure, as well as ensuring that enough is done to provide enough school places and health partners carry forward plans to enhance health provision.

Cllr Steve Neocleous, Adur’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Strategic Planning, said:

“The plans for the development at the Frosts site have been amended and I am pleased that there has been a reduction in height and a reduction in the density of development for this site.“We want to support economic growth across the district and the

regeneration of Shoreham Harbour is part of that plan as we continue our efforts to modernise the area and make it an attractive place to invest in.

“But our commitment is very much focusing on the environment and that is why we want to use brownfield sites as opposed to having to look at greenfield land to help solve the shortage of housing.”

In a bid to regenerate Adur, we are working closely with businesses, developers and residents to deliver projects that will boost economic growth and provide housing. As part of the wider Shoreham Harbour Regeneration project a number of new jobs have been created with the Port Authority delivering new industrial units for start up businesses in various locations across the eastern harbour arm. Elsewhere, developer Panattoni is to transform a brownfield site close to the A27 and Shoreham Airport into a business park, which will create new jobs both in the short-term and long-term.In addition, we are also investing in Southwick Square to regenerate the shopping precinct that has suffered from a lack of investment over the years and delivering a green space for residents and visitors to enjoy with the focus on improved biodiversity.

A new housing estate at New Monks Park, in Lancing will deliver 634 much-needed homes, but as part of the planning approval will boast one of Sussex’s biggest country parks with more than 500 trees being planted, as well as a network of pathways and wooden bridges.

Negative Space

There are many ways to compose a photograph to make it appealing to the viewer.

With my street photography I like to place a single figure close to the edge of the frame. I feel that it adds drama and tension to the scene as a split second later, the figure would be gone and just the background would be left in shot. The image here makes use of negative space. This is the area that surrounds the main subject or focal point (the positive space) that can isolate and emphasise that subject and also give a sense of place. I also happen to like the colour of the background here. That blue sets off the straw hat. There is also something else going on here as regards the design. The majority of the

space consists of verticals but this is broken up by the diagonals in the centrally placed service door and four horizontal hinge straps.

Negative space in art and photography is related to minimalist art. It simplifies an image and helps to direct the eye towards the main subject and is often a single colour with little detail but it can also have a design of its own as in my image here.

In this case I found the background doors and waited for a passing figure to complete the image before pressing the shutter button.
