In this talk we’ll examine the emergence of Pop Art in Britain and the USA as a reaction to the dominance of Abstract Expressionism and the rise of consumer culture in the post-war period. We’ll look at both the celebratory and critical aspects of Pop Art.
Here was a new art inspired by the popular artefacts generated by a new consumer culture of: cars, home appliances, comic books, the celebrity glamour of pop stars and lm stars, science ction, the junk we throw away, and the junk we eat: hamburgers and American pie.
