SOUTH HILLS COUNTRY CLUB MONTHLY NEWSLETTER

T h e B o a r d

Dear Members,

It’s hard to believe that I started on this board three years ago. I have enjoyed being a part of the decision-making process that effects the day-to-day operations at South Hills Country Club. My goal for joining the board was to continue to strive to make SHCC a better place for families to gather. I believe I have accomplished that goal. One thing that I can attest to is that the men on this board work extremely hard to give the members an enjoyable experience. I also know that the women’s board works equally as hard to make everyone feel welcomed.

January and February have been occupied by both Thursday and Saturday Team Play. Thursday’s Team has had a fabulous year and will most likely advance to the play-offs.We wish them the best as they grind their way to victory and represent our club. Playing Saturday Team is always one of the highlights of my year and this season was amazing. Although we didn’t advance to the playoffs, we gave the teams in our division a run for their money.

With the amazing amount of rain we have been fortunate to receive, the course should be as green as a bottle of Jameson Irish Whiskey and ready for all the events that will be showcased in March. First off, the men will be playing their annual A/B Match Play Tournament. The winner and runner up of this event will represent South Hills at the SCGA 4-ball net championship. Next, the ladies will be having a first ever St. Patrick’s Day Tournament on Tuesday, March 12. Grab our foursome

and sign up in the pro shop. Finally, in preparation for the 2024 Sunkist Swim Finals, the club will be putting on a “Casino Royale” fundraising night on March 2 starting at 6PM SHCC summer swim and dive program is one of the best in the valley. Gina and I were blessed to have our children be a part of this program for 14+ years. Mark your calendar and make a reservation.

I would like to close by thanking each staff member at our club. It is very visible to me how hard everyone works as a team Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve.

All the best,

J i m J a s t r a b T o u r n a m e n t L i a s o n

EASTER BRUNCH MARCH 31st

As we hurry our way out of the winter and into the spring, March has always posed as a good springtime transition month with better weather than January and February. Easter always serves as a great kick off to spring each year. This year, that kick off comes in March. That’s right, Easter is actually on March 31st this year.

Don’t hesitate to get signed up for one of the biggest events of the year with the Club’s Easter Brunch Celebration. We average well over 400 members, family, and guests each year and with the date moved up 2 weeks earlier than last year, don’t get caught off guard. The annual easter celebration will feature our most extravagant brunch buffet and live music. Once your table has reached their two-hour table time limit, you can adjourn to the wine garden and petting zoo down below at the Pavilion.

PICKLEBALL RAMPING UP AT THE CLUB

Since adding pickleball courts to our tennis amenities complex this past year, the sport has been steadily increasing in popularity at SHCC. We have the standing monthly pickleball social which features round robin formats designed to mix people up, food, drink, instruction, and music that has been going monthly for the past year.

We also added Chickleball during the week on Thursday morning. Chickleball is a pickleball round robin designed to introduce ladies that are interested in pickleball to other ladies that are interested in learning pickleball. Chickleball takes place every Thursday morning.

USGA Rule 6.2

Teeing up your ball on consecutive shots??

A little known rule

To use this rule you need to top the ball. Or sky it. Basically hit it poorly and it doesn't leave the teeing area.

HOW IT WORKS:

1 If yes, now you are hitting your second shot.

3

Determine that your first swing counts

2. If your ball is still in the teeing area then you can pick it up and move it to anywhere within the teeing area. You can tee it up for the second shot.

THE TEEING AREA IS THE SMALL BOX BETWEEN THE TWO TEES AND MEASURING TWO CLUB LENGTHS BACK

THE PLAYER CAN MOVE IT TO ANYWHERE WITHING THE TEEING AREA.

It is my desire that you, our beloved members, be able to taste that love and passion as I truly feel that food tastes like the mood in which it is prepared.

Being able to create dishes the membership enjoys brings me much joy! This month we have a delicious Silver Oak Wine Dinner that will feature five different course alongside live music and unique wine pairings.

Celebrate St. Patricks Day with a menu that features Corned Beef on Bed of Sauerkraut, Bangers, Grilled Tri Tip with Guiness Sauce and so much more!

Ending the month with a bang on Easter with a brunch that will surely delight.

Thank you for allowing me to serve as it is my humble pleasure…..

February came and went and we loved seeing you all come back for the re-launch of pasta night as well as a successful Valentine's Day Dinner! As we look forward to March, we start off the month with Casino Royale night on the 2nd, followed by Taco Tuesday on the 5th and Pasta Night on the 6th. We would love to see you and the whole family come out for the St. Patrick's Day celebration on the 17th as there will be some exciting new Irish beers to taste as well as in Irish inspired buffet.

We will finish off the month with Easter Brunch. Make sure to make your reservations as these events will fill up quickly. Just a friendly reminder that as the quarter draws to a close at the end of March you can always purchase a bottle of wine- to- go to apply to your quarterly Food and Beverage minimum. The wine list is completely up to date and there are several new selections to choose from highlighted as "NEW". We look forward to seeing you all in March!

It is the beginning of March which means it is once again time to aerify greens. This will take place on March 4. As a reminder, we no longer are doing the large tine core cultivation which created a major impact on the putting green surface. We will do that in early May. Instead, we will once again be using the Dryject machine. We completed this process last March and were happy with the results. The machine penetrates the soil with blasts of water and sand simultaneously fills the holes.

Another new wrinkle we will be adding to the process this year is a Verti-drain before the Dryject. The Vert-drain is solid tine aerification that penetrates 8 to 10 inches. When the tines of the Verti-drain penetrate the soil it” kicks” horizontally fracturing the surrounding soil. This fracturing of the soil will promote deeper penetration of the Dryject and the sand it will deliver. If that wasn’t enough, we will be doing a standard aerification using ¼” tines to remove some organic matter.

These things are being done to create a soil that drains well and holds plenty of oxygen for the root system. A good root system is the key to a healthy putting green.
