5 Tips for Having a Great First Day of School

Are you ready for the first day of school? The first day of school is a big deal for kids and parents. Getting back into a school routine can be tough, especially for children who start at a new school. We’ve put together a few essential tips for the first day of school so you and your child can have a successful start to the school year.

VISIT THE SCHOOL OR GO TO AN OPEN HOUSE

Preparation is the best way to minimize first-day jitters and stress. Before the school year starts, take your child to an open house, orientation, or a tour of the school. Perhaps even ask to shadow a class. This is particularly helpful if your child is starting at a new school. By visiting the building beforehand, your child can familiarize herself or himself with the schedule and routine, which may boost confidence and help the transition seem less scary.

PREP EVERYTHING THE NIGHT BEFORE

The morning of the first day of school should be as calm as possible, so taking the time to prep the night before will help make the morning routine run smoothly. You can prepare things such as:

Book bags

Any medical forms, permission slips or paperwork needed

When you prepare everything ahead of time, you’ll also have a chance to catch any last-minute tasks that you might have missed leading up to the first day.

GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP AND WAKE UP EARLY

That goes for you and your child! It’s pretty common to let bedtime lapse over the summer, especially when the days are much longer. Ideally, you should start gradually adjusting sleep and wake schedules about two weeks before school starts. That way, getting to bed on time is already a habit, and the night before school starts, your child will be good to go.

On the big day, encourage your child to wake up early, which will help them to acclimate to the new routine and leave room in case something unexpected arises. Plus, your child can get to school a little bit earlier, alleviating stress for you and your child (especially navigating through traffic during drop-off)!

EAT A HEALTHY BREAKFAST

No matter how excited or nervous your child might be, it is important that they don’t skip breakfast. Having a healthy breakfast can help kids better regulate their appetite and avoid common illnesses. Getting breakfast ready is another reason why waking up early on the first day is a good

idea. However, that doesn’t mean preparing breakfast needs to be a long ordeal. You can prep breakfast foods the night before or bake batches of food like breakfast muffins to cut down on time.

BE MINDFUL OF HOW YOUR CHILD IS FEELING

As a parent, you may be focused on getting your child’s things ready or being on time. That’s totally normal. However, don’t forget to be mindful of how he or she is feeling. Your child may feel anxious, excited, scared, or stressed. Try to remain calm; if you act stressed, your child will pick up on it. Focus on the positive and let your child talk about their fears or worries if they need to. Remind them that these feelings are common and okay to have, and that you’ll be there when the school day is over.

2019 is Tstreet Volleyball Club’s Golden Year

On June 30th, Tstreet’s first medal winning team, 14-Carson, hoisted their Open Gold trophy. On July 6th, the last day of Junior Nationals, 16-Mike did the same. It was a banner year for Tstreet Volleyball Club, with six medals at Nationals, two of them Gold in the toughest division in the tournament. It wasn’t just one season of work, one coach, one athlete. It’s the culmination of years in the making that starts with the foundation of the club built by Two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Troy Tanner.

It began on the sand of Tstreet Beach in San Clemente, where Troy and his wife Desiree live and raised their children Carson, Riley and Bailey. Starting with only 11 young athletes, Troy brought a different approach to club volleyball - with the mindset of developing athletes to their highest potential - and a coaching philosophy that demanded much of players without demeaning them.

“I started Tstreet for my daughter when she was 11, back in 2005,” Tanner says. “There was a lack of teaching and

mentoring young athletes in club volleyball that I knew I wanted for her, and a lot of families in the area had similar goals for their daughters. Word spread and Tstreet increased in size rapidly.”

Fourteen years later, with a gym full of medals and trophies, ringed with positive mindset quotes on the walls, and the club expanding into Pomona, Tanner’s philosophy stretches into every team at every age division, and has brought to fruition a season of five gold medals for the 16-1s.

“I started volleyball at Tstreet,” says Lauren Bays, who is now a two-time Open Champion, MVP of the National Championship, and on full scholarship to University of Washington. “They taught me everything I know, and helped me get to where I am today. Tstreet’s just the best.”

Tstreet has always prided itself on the path it creates for young up-and-coming athletes to develop and learn a

love for the game before they even take the step into club. Grace Chillingworth walked that path at 11 when she joined Tstreet’s Tweens program in 2014. Five years later, she is a two-time Open Champion and committed to Pepperdine University - a true example of work ethic, diligence, and passion for the game.

“I’ve been [at Tstreet] since I was 11, and the experience has really brought out who I am as a person and an athlete,” says Elyse Stowell, a BYU commit. “Everyone on this team has helped me get here.”

No other team or club has accomplished what this 16s teams has: Five gold medals in a single season. It is a true testament to the dedication and work of Coach Mike Murphy, his assistants Bailey Tanner and Andrew Hein, and club director Troy Tanner. Murphy, who is also a San Clemente native, is blessed and humbled by the success of this team. “This season was special-- full of quality young women who were driven together and truly enjoyed the ride. The culture of the team from the very beginning was instilled with value, honor and competitive greatness. The girls showed great honor and respect for one another.”

When asked to share what made this team unique, strong and so formidable, the common answer was simple: the bond. Team Captain Jessie Smith says, “we’re such good friends on and off the court, so when we play we’re not just playing for ourselves, but the people around us.”

The journey of this team has seen so much growth and unparalleled success, with Open Gold at 14s and 16s, countless gold medals along the way, and a 2019 season record of 66-3, finishing at #1 in the nation. It takes a village, years of support from parents, coaches, and staff.

“I trust my coaches to hold the girls accountable to Tstreet systems and standards,” says Troy Tanner. “Our amazing athletes believe and trust the club and our coaches. Families trust the club.”

Tstreet’s drive stems from Coach Troy’s famous phrase, dating back to when he coached Kerri Walsh-Jennings and Misty May-Treanor to Olympic Gold - and it’s all over the gym and on every jersey and t-shirt: Breathe, Believe, Battle.

“Throughout the year, we breathed, believed and battled our way to 5 gold medals,” says Coach Mike. “I’m so proud of all that this team accomplished this year and the memories that were formed. It was a privilege to be a part of. It took all 11 players to achieve what we did, and we all crossed the finish line as one, and we all share the glory together.”

STILL WORKING? Should you go on Medicare?

If you or your spouse is still working, the size of the employer determines whether you may be able to delay Part A and Part B without having to pay a penalty if you enroll later. If the employer has fewer than 20 employees then you should sign up for both Part A and Part B when turning 65. If you don’t enroll at this time, you may have to pay a Part B late enrollment penalty which will occur monthly for as long as you have Medicare Part B active.

If your employer group health plan has 20 or more employees, and it makes sense to stay on this coverage when you turn 65 (there are factors to consider; how much the coverage costs for you and your spouse, how good the benefits are, what is your AGI for the past 2 years and currently as well) then you don’t need to do anything when you turn 65. But I highly recommend consulting with an experienced Medicare broker at this time to review the facts and eliminate the fiction.

You won’t need to worry about a late enrollment penalty if this situation applies to you. If you’re eligible for premium-free Part A, you can enroll in Part A at any time after you’re first eligible for Medicare. Your Part A coverage will go back (retroactively) 6 months from when you sign up (but no earlier than the first month you’re eligible for Medicare). If you aren’t eligible for premium-free Part A, and you don’t buy it when you’re first eligible, you may have to pay a penalty. (You or your spouse must have paid

40 quarters worth of taxes to have premium free Part A). When you decide to leave your employer/union group coverage, or it happens to end, you have 8 months to sign up for Part B without a penalty. There are two forms that must be turned into Social Security in order to do this.

If you opt for COBRA while transitioning to Medicare, don’t stay on it longer than 8 months. (It’s generally

very expensive and most people opt not to anyway). If you don’t enroll in Part B within 8 months of your employer group health plan ending you may have to pay a penalty for as long as you have Part B and you won’t be able to enroll into Medicare until January 1–March 31, and you’ll have to wait until July 1 of that year before your coverage begins. This may cause a gap in health care coverage and a lot of stress and concern for you.

How Can I Tell If I Have Skin Cancer?

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.

Look especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.

ACTINIC KERATOSIS

An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.

SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.

BASAL CELL CARCINOMA

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.

MELANOMA

Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.

WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW

1. Everyone needs to perform a selfskin exam once a month.

2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life.

3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling

A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?

B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?

C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?

D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.

E - Evolution: Has it changed?

F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others?

4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

Each day, the medical world sees a breakthrough. However much medicine is known to press the envelope and expand its reach, most of the day to day is still simply caring for people. After earning a Masters of Science in Nutrition, Dr. Gebhard graduated from the Loma Linda University School of Medicine in Surgery before moving on to UC Irvine for Family Medicine. Monitoring bladder fullness through a non-invasive ultrasound device, the product caught the attention of now-VP of Marketing, Ty Takayanagi. “A former boss introduced me,” says Ty. “I thought it would help my own son, Taisei, who is currently 12 years old and suffered from a traumatic brain injury when he was 10 months old and was still wearing diapers.”

Meet Align’s Melanie Bermudez

A former competitive collegiate swimmer, Melanie Bermudez, who also holds a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts, had all the traditional aches and pains that are associated with repetitive motion.

To offset the imbalances, she was introduced to Pilates as a form of cross training. From this point on, her life changed for the better. So much so that she switched careers. The former art teacher has now dedicated herself to teaching pilates.

“I have always used art to understand and dissect the world around me,” explains Melanie. “So, it only made sense to start drawing the body to help create a better understanding of it.”

For Melanie, her reward comes in seeing a client truly be able connect to their bodies and go deeper then

just believing pilates is about being toned or ab exercises. The body is a very complex system and requires a comprehensive knowledge of how to lead someone into an exercise correctly.

“For me, pilates was just what I needed to rebalance, strengthen and center my mind and body,” she says. “I no longer suffer with the constant chronic pain I use to have. I have better use of my shoulders and my whole body. I am able to enjoy life and the activities I love so much, such as swimming, running, and biking all pain free due to pilates.”

Ican happily attest that literally everything my husband and I have tried on the menu here has been nothing short of superb. It’s rare to come across someone who can flat out explain what Medicare is - the ins and outs, more than just a remedial nod to its place in the insurance world.

Often, even those who have worked in insurance have to find their way out of the labyrinthine complications. Sherry Meradji came to it when she decided to embark on her own.

Having previously sold small business group insurance, she got her fair share of questions about Medicare. What is it? How does it work? Do you offer it? What’s the cost? “I thought, if this is so complicated for me having worked in insurance for

A year later, when the concrete moves again and damages their brand new floor coating, the devastated homeowner will learn that this damage is not covered by the typical Epoxy warranty. “We are the only company that I know of that uses a ‘structural crack repair’ technique to fix cracks. The process is so effective we can offer our customers a warranty that can cover future damage from cracks!” says Paul.

After the surface prep is completed, a very effective moisture control primer is applied to the concrete. “This is extremely important” says Paul because for many homes built in Socal before 2005, elevated moisture vapor levels in the garage concrete can have a detrimental impact on floor coatings. Paul does a fast and non-destructive moisture test for every one of the pre-2005 homes he visits and develops a unique installation plan for each home. For newer homes, Paul and his crew can use a basic primer that dries a bit faster allowing installation of a garage floor in as little as one day!

The color chips that give the Perkins floor its legendary appearance are sandwiched between this primer and finish coat.
