for Having a Great

First Day of School A

re you ready for the first day of school? The first day of school is a big deal for kids and parents. Getting back into a school routine can be tough, especially for children who start at a new school. We’ve put together a few essential tips for the first day of school so you and your child can have a successful start to the school year.

Preparation is the best way to minimize first-day jitters and stress. Before the school year starts, take your child to an open house, orientation, or a tour of the school. Perhaps even ask to shadow a class. This is particularly helpful if your child is starting at a new school. By visiting the building beforehand, your child can familiarize herself or himself with the schedule and routine, which may boost confidence and help the transition seem less scary.

The morning of the first day of school should be as calm as possible, so taking the time to prep the night before will help make the morning routine run smoothly. You can prepare things such as:

The school outfit School lunch Book bags Any medical forms, permission slips or paperwork needed

8 September 2019

When you prepare everything ahead of time, you’ll also have a chance to catch any last-minute tasks that you might have missed leading up to the first day.

That goes for you and your child! It’s pretty common to let bedtime lapse over the summer, especially when the days are much longer. Ideally, you should start gradually adjusting sleep and wake schedules about two weeks before school starts. That way, getting to bed on time is already a habit, and the night before school starts, your child will be good to go. On the big day, encourage your child to wake up early, which will help them to acclimate to the new routine and leave room in case something unexpected arises. Plus, your child can get to school a little bit earlier, alleviating stress for you and your child (especially navigating through traffic during drop-off)!

No matter how excited or nervous your child might be, it is important that they don’t skip breakfast. Having a healthy breakfast can help kids better regulate their appetite and avoid common illnesses. Getting breakfast ready is another reason why waking up early on the first day is a good

idea. However, that doesn’t mean preparing breakfast needs to be a long ordeal. You can prep breakfast foods the night before or bake batches of food like breakfast muffins to cut down on time.

As a parent, you may be focused on getting your child’s things ready or being on time. That’s totally normal. However, don’t forget to be mindful of how he or she is feeling. Your child may feel anxious, excited, scared, or stressed. Try to remain calm; if you act stressed, your child will pick up on it. Focus on the positive and let your child talk about their fears or worries if they need to. Remind them that these feelings are common and okay to have, and that you’ll be there when the school day is over. Are you thinking of enrolling your child at a new school? 2019 is Tstreet Volleyball Club’s Golden Year

n June 30th, Tstreet’s first medal winning team, 14-Carson, hoisted their Open Gold trophy. On July 6th, the last day of Junior Nationals, 16-Mike did the same. It was a banner year for Tstreet Volleyball Club, with six medals at Nationals, two of them Gold in the toughest division in the tournament. It wasn’t just one season of work, one coach, one athlete. It’s the culmination of years in the making that starts with the foundation of the club built by Two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Troy Tanner. It began on the sand of Tstreet Beach in San Clemente, where Troy and his wife Desiree live and raised their children Carson, Riley and Bailey. Starting with only 11 young athletes, Troy brought a different approach to club volleyball - with the mindset of developing athletes to their highest potential - and a coaching philosophy that demanded much of players without demeaning them. “I started Tstreet for my daughter when she was 11, back in 2005,” Tanner says. “There was a lack of teaching and 10 September 2019

mentoring young athletes in club volleyball that I knew I wanted for her, and a lot of families in the area had similar goals for their daughters. Word spread and Tstreet increased in size rapidly.” Fourteen years later, with a gym full of medals and trophies, ringed with positive mindset quotes on the walls, and the club expanding into Pomona, Tanner’s philosophy stretches into every team at every age division, and has brought to fruition a season of five gold medals for the 16-1s. “I started volleyball at Tstreet,” says Lauren Bays, who is now a two-time Open Champion, MVP of the National Championship, and on full scholarship to University of Washington. “They taught me everything I know, and helped me get to where I am today. Tstreet’s just the best.” Tstreet has always prided itself on the path it creates for young up-and-coming athletes to develop and learn a

love for the game before they even take the step into club. Grace Chillingworth walked that path at 11 when she joined Tstreet’s Tweens program in 2014. Five years later, she is a two-time Open Champion and committed to Pepperdine University - a true example of work ethic, diligence, and passion for the game. “I’ve been [at Tstreet] since I was 11, and the experience has really brought out who I am as a person and an athlete,” says Elyse Stowell, a BYU commit. “Everyone on this team has helped me get here.” No other team or club has accomplished what this 16s teams has: Five gold medals in a single season. It is a true testament to the dedication and work of Coach Mike Murphy, his assistants Bailey Tanner and Andrew Hein, and club director Troy Tanner. Murphy, who is also a San Clemente native, is blessed and humbled by the success of this team. “This season was special-- full of quality young women who were driven together and truly enjoyed the ride. The culture of the team from the very beginning was instilled with value, honor and competitive greatness. The girls showed great honor and respect for one another.” When asked to share what made this team unique, strong and so formidable, the common answer was simple: the bond. Team Captain Jessie Smith says, “we’re such good friends on and off the court, so when we play we’re not just playing for ourselves, but the people around us.” The journey of this team has seen so much growth and unparalleled success, with Open Gold at 14s and 16s, countless gold medals along the way, and a 2019 season record of 66-3, finishing at #1 in the nation. It takes a village, years of support from parents, coaches, and staff. “I trust my coaches to hold the girls accountable to Tstreet systems and standards,” says Troy Tanner. “Our amazing athletes believe and trust the club and our coaches. Families trust the club.” Tstreet’s drive stems from Coach Troy’s famous phrase, dating back to when he coached Kerri Walsh-Jennings and Misty May-Treanor to Olympic Gold - and it’s all over the gym and on every jersey and t-shirt: Breathe, Believe, Battle. “Throughout the year, we breathed, believed and battled our way to 5 gold medals,” says Coach Mike. “I’m so proud of all that this team accomplished this year and the memories that were formed. It was a privilege to be a part of. It took all 11 players to achieve what we did, and we all crossed the finish line as one, and we all share the glory together.” Tstreet is located at 1 Autry in Irvine. Should you go on Medicare? By Stephanie Frisch

Most people should enroll in Medicare Part A (Hospital) when they’re turning 65, but certain people may choose to delay Medicare Part B (Medical) In most cases, it depends on the type of health coverage you may have.

f you or your spouse is still working, the size of the employer determines whether you may be able to delay Part A and Part B without having to pay a penalty if you enroll later. If the employer has fewer than 20 employees then you should sign up for both Part A and Part B when turning 65. If you don’t enroll at this time, you may have to pay a Part B late enrollment penalty which will occur monthly for as long as you have Medicare Part B active. If your employer group health plan has 20 or more employees, and it makes sense to stay on this coverage when you turn 65 (there are factors to consider; how much the coverage costs for you and your spouse, how good the benefits are, what is your AGI for the past 2 years and currently as well) then you don’t need to do anything when you turn 65. But I highly recommend consulting with an experienced Medicare broker at this time to review the facts and eliminate the fiction. You won’t need to worry about a late enrollment penalty if this situation applies to you. If you’re eligible for premium-free Part A, you can enroll in Part A at any time after you’re first eligible for Medicare. Your Part A coverage will go back (retroactively) 6 months from when you sign up (but no earlier than the first month you’re eligible for Medicare). If you aren’t eligible for premium-free Part A, and you don’t buy it when you’re first eligible, you may have to pay a penalty. (You or your spouse must have paid 12 September 2019

40 quarters worth of taxes to have premium free Part A). When you decide to leave your employer/union group coverage, or it happens to end, you have 8 months to sign up for Part B without a penalty. There are two forms that must be turned into Social Security in order to do this. If you opt for COBRA while transitioning to Medicare, don’t stay on it longer than 8 months. (It’s generally

very expensive and most people opt not to anyway). If you don’t enroll in Part B within 8 months of your employer group health plan ending you may have to pay a penalty for as long as you have Part B and you won’t be able to enroll into Medicare until January 1–March 31, and you’ll have to wait until July 1 of that year before your coverage begins. This may cause a gap in health care coverage and a lot of stress and concern for you.

Victoria is fabulous!! I moved to Orange County 1O years ago forcing me to find a new hair stylist, and had several horrible experiences. I decided my mission was to look at the hair style of each person I encountered. I found that perfect hairstyle and I asked her who did her hair and she gave me Victoria's name and salon. Now, I have people ask ME all the time who does my hair, and have even had people ask to take my picture so they could show their out of town stylist! She truly cares about her clients and puts all her efforts and skill to work to create the perfect style. I always look forward to seeing Vic and leaving the salon with a huge smile on my face and feeling great!

How Can I Tell If I Have Skin Cancer? By Kristy Fleming, MD

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.

ook especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.

An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer. 18 September 2019

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.

Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.

1. Everyone needs to perform a selfskin exam once a month. 2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life. 3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match? B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin? C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue? D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma. E - Evolution: Has it changed? F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others? 4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

Modern Medicine. Traditional Care with Dr. Karl Gebhard and RossLegacy Medical Group By Jody Robinson

Each day, the medical world sees a breakthrough. However much medicine is known to press the envelope and expand its reach, most of the day to day is still simply caring for people. Getting to the big stuff by taking care of the million little hurts and questions every patient has. Dr. Karl Gebhard is no stranger to both big and small.

fter earning a Masters of Science in Nutrition, Dr. Gebhard graduated from the Loma Linda University School of Medicine in Surgery before moving on to UC Irvine for Family Medicine. Along the way, he added “author” to his credentials with published works in both professional journals and consumer magazines.

The year after his medical residency, Dr. Gebhard met Dr. Ross (first Chief of Staff at Mission Hospital), and opened the doors to his medical practice in Ladera Ranch in 2003. “My brother and I drove around looking at the dirt fields that would become Ladera Ranch and I remember being really excited about the prospect of being one of the first physicians to practice here.” As it turned out, Dr. Gebhard wasn’t just one of the area’s first physicians, he was the fledgling community’s very first doctor - and he’s been looking after the small stuff ever since. “Each problem we see, be it a couple stitches, a stuffy nose, or diet counseling, is a BIG deal to the person experiencing it,” he says. Entering lives as they do, often in the midst of a stressful situation, can be difficult. But focusing on each person’s individual concerns has helped give meaning and momentum to the practice. “We’re serving an incredible circle of patients of all ages from one to 100 - the first week it was one, then two, and the snowball of care just kept growing. It was incredibly rewarding to see so many families moving into the community, watching their children grow, providing a service and being a part of something bigger.” In 2015, Dr. Gebhard moved his growing practice into a Mission Viejo medical complex to offer his patients easy access to a variety of complementary ancillary care, such as physical therapy. Over the years, Dr. Gebhard and his staff have earned rave reviews from scores of first-time clients and longtime patients alike. Jaime T. of Ladera Ranch shares that “Dr. Gebhard has been our family physician for years and all I can say is OUTSTANDING. His service is impeccable, personable and extremely thorough. Not only does he provide 20 September 2019

5-star service, the convenience and availability are also highly impressive. Same day appointments, schedule online or simply walk in 7 days a week.” San Juan Capistrano resident Franco T. agrees with Jamie’s assessment and adds “… I can tell Dr. Gebhard and his team genuinely care about their clients. I have referred my friends and family and they all have nothing but amazing things to say about (their experience). I was tired of corporate medicine and all these urgent cares and medical facilities scheduling me weeks out, not being flexible to my schedule or prescribing medication before trying to find a more natural solution to the medical issues I had. Thank you Dr. Gebhard, your services are appreciated and valued.” Because RossLegacy Medical Group is both a family practice and urgent care, there’s no need to go anywhere else. On the family practice side, services range from helping patients manage their diabetes, high cholesterol and asthma to conducting sports physicals for student athletes and more. Urgent care cases run the gamut from injuries and acute illnesses. Splinting, suturing, plaster, digital onsite X-ray, EKG, oxygen: the list goes on and on. With sameday appointments, you don’t have to wait days or even

weeks to be seen for something as simple as a sore throat. “We specialize in getting to know you; and we’re open every day of the year.” Thanksgiving, Christmas, even New Years Day, you won’t have to drive around in circles when the game of family touch football goes south. And with the entire array of current technologies at their fingertips, the folks at RossLegacy won’t have to wait on a paper file to fax through. A recent urgent care case provides a classic example of how RossLegacy Medical Group can save patients in both time and money over an emergency room visit: A 5-year-old girl came in with a chin laceration that required stitches. Dr. Gebhard was able to treat the child and have her family on their way in under an hour. Anyone who has spent any time in an ER waiting to be seen will tell you that turnaround is virtually unheard of - not to mention the significant cost savings over a typical ER visit. RossLegacy Medical Group is also the first and only medical office in Orange County to feature the new ‘VendRx’ machine - truly a breakthrough in medical convenience. An automated electronic pharmacy, the machine dispenses the patient’s medication during their office visit, so they don’t have to make an unnecessary trip across town and experience long wait times. “Utilizing the latest technology is just another step to helping our patients realize their health potential. It’s been rewarding to have control over the practice, so I can do the right thing, instead of being bound to the restrictive guidelines of a large HMO or insurance-owned medical group.” Patients all agree. Dr. Gebhard saw an older gentleman who weighed 270 lbs, and with a previous history of cardiac arrest and diabetes, he was struggling to control his weight. Over an 18-month period with motivational visits, a comprehensive diet plan and counseling and daily exercise tips, he lost 100 pounds. “Having a patient take control of their journey and helping patients help themselves is very rewarding!" VendRx - automated electronic pharmacy

HEALTH & BEAUTY Be Free, with DFree

The FIRST wearable device that predicts when to go to the bathroom By Jody Robison

There have long been debates about progress. For its own sake, it can be detrimental to a populus, forcing change before readiness. Technology is debated hotly today: the machines running the machine.

oo much connectivity without human connection. Too much FaceTime without enough face time. Yet innovation is the spark of humanity, and there are specific occasions which strike and produce a shower of independence for its users. DFree is one of those sparks.

DFree stands for “diaper free.” Empowering people with incontinence to live worry-free, the wearable device is changing the technology game for good. Not just a face altering photo app or a chirpy target practice game, the award-winning, patented technology is currently being used in over 500 senior care facilities in Japan, Europe, and the United States. Urinary incontinence impacts over 500 million people worldwide, roughly the amount of users viewing Instagram stories every day. But unlike story watchers, those with incontinence are actively managing their condition with disposable diapers, underwear, pads, medications, or invasive surgery. Triple W, a Japan-based tech innovator founded in 2015, wanted to tackle the issue head on. Creating manageable bladder control became a “proactive, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional solutions.” 22 September 2019

Monitoring bladder fullness through a non-invasive ultrasound device, the product caught the attention of now-VP of Marketing, Ty Takayanagi. “A former boss introduced me,” says Ty. “I thought it would help my own son, Taisei, who is currently 12 years old and suffered from a traumatic brain injury when he was 10 months old and was still wearing diapers.”

FIRST DAY FREE! $200.00 value (limited time offer)

Keeping the device lightweight and portable was the key for independence to its users. DFree clips to your belt or clothing, while the non-invasive sensor is attached to the abdomen with medical tape. Sensing bladder fullness predicts urination timing, and sends notifications directly to a smartphone or tablet via app, informing the user when it’s time to head towards the restroom. One can even set their own personalized threshold for fullness: 65, 70, or 85 percent.

High Quality In-Home Care Specializing in Serving People Living with Parkinson’s Disease Triple W believes that having control of your senses is the key to living life to the fullest, and Ty couldn’t agree more. “The challenges of helping to care for my son made championing this device an easy decision,” he says. “I wanted to help others who were suffering, as well as other caregivers seeking respite from the constant checking in.” Coupled with the firsthand knowledge of managing incontinence from caring for his son, Ty argues that DFree’s key is control over your senses. Now, they’re pairing up with community events like the Spina Bifida Walk n’ Roll in Orange County, and the National MS Society Walk in San Diego. Expanding out from Tokyo to Paris, and most recently San Diego, DFree is here to stay. Now that’s progress. For more information, call (833) 337-3387 (833-DFREEUS) or visit DFreeUS.biz

He visited the offices in Japan and asked if his son could be a beta-tester while the product was still in developmental stages. Just a few short months later, CEO Atsushi Nakanishi asked Ty how he’d feel building a team out to launch the product stateside. Combining his product marketing talents from a previous stint at Sony, Ty agreed joyfully. “This device wasn’t only a game-changer for my son, my own family, but it can completely change the way we experience aging, disability. We have more confidence in heading outdoors or do a hobby we haven’t tried in a long time.”

Artist in Motion

Meet Align’s Melanie Bermudez

By the Align Pilates Team

A former competitive collegiate swimmer, Melanie Bermudez, who also holds a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts, had all the traditional aches and pains that are associated with repetitive motion.

o offset the imbalances, she was introduced to Pilates as a form of cross training. From this point on, her life changed for the better. So much so that she switched careers. The former art teacher has now dedicated herself to teaching pilates. “I have always used art to understand and dissect the world around me,” explains Melanie. “So, it only made sense to start drawing the body to help create a better understanding of it.” For Melanie, her reward comes in seeing a client truly be able connect to their bodies and go deeper then

just believing pilates is about being toned or ab exercises. The body is a very complex system and requires a comprehensive knowledge of how to lead someone into an exercise correctly. “It’s not that pilates can’t give you those things, it’s just that it gives you so much more,” continues Melanie. “People are missing a vast majority of the benefits if they limit their thinking to those two concepts. Pilates is a great supplement to anyone’s life. It’s kind of like taking vitamins. When done on a daily or weekly basis it keeps bodies and minds healthy.”

One of the reasons Melanie’s so passionate about pilates is because of the difference it made in her own life. “For me, pilates was just what I needed to rebalance, strengthen and center my mind and body,” she says. “I no longer suffer with the constant chronic pain I use to have. I have better use of my shoulders and my whole body. I am able to enjoy life and the activities I love so much, such as swimming, running, and biking all pain free due to pilates.” It was this passion and belief in pilates that led Melanie to became a certified instructor through the world-renowned BASI program. She has also gone on to specialize in movement for individuals suffering from back pain, scoliosis, herniated discs, fused backs, sciatic pain and much more. “Pilates can be adapted to any age and any body type” says Melanie. “I find it very approachable, it can be high energy, or slow and meditative, with so many variations in between. Each class, each client is unique, and has their own set of individual goals and needs.” The personal touch Melanie offers with her vast knowledge and passion for pilates makes her a valuable player to the amazing list of instructor at Align Pilates and Yoga. We invite you to come in and try one of her classes, or a personal one-onone session with her today. We’re sure you will walk away feeling great. Elemental Healing with Coastal Salt

Dry Salt Therapy By Jody Robinson

umbers 11 and 17 on the Periodic Table of Elements are pretty important to Amy Boriack. They have been for a long time now. Not separately, of course. Together. Representing a 1:1 ratio of sodium and chloride ions, sodium chloride is Amy’s bread and butter. Or, more approximately: her table salt. Introduced to the concept of halotherapy by a friend, Amy and her daughter sought out the treatment a few years back to help kick a lingering cold. “Sure enough, a couple of sessions sent it down the road, and since then with regular use, we’ve managed to avoid many bugs altogether.” Amy was sold. Avoiding the more unnatural over-the-counter remedies and finding the therapy interesting was all it took. In business now for a few months, Amy opened the doors to Coastal Salt with high hopes of minimizing her client’s stress, opening up their airways, and clearing out bacteria and inflammation from their skin. “Salt has incredible healing properties”, says Amy. “It brings moisture 28 September 2019

Backed by more than 50 years of scientific research, halotherapy originated in Europe. Well documented in clinical trials in St. Petersburg, Russia, and most recently the New England Journal of Medicine, halotherapy has been long hailed as the leading aid in the naturopathic treatment of cystic fibrosis.

Prescott Tax & Wealth Management Peter Prescott formed Prescott Tax & Wealth Management (PTWM) over 20 years ago to focus on the needs of individual and small business owners who want and deserve a more comprehensive approach to their financial affairs that are typically provided by separate CPA, Financial Planning and Insurance advisors. Peter was one of the first CPAs nationally to offer a combined CPA and Financial Planning approach.

eter astutely observes that most individuals go to separate financial advisors who are trying to maximize the business for their own specific service without regard to the impact of the other areas of required planning and the budgetary tradeoffs needed for ultimate financial success. Peter is proud of his training and background including a CPA, Masters in Taxation, Advanced Financial Planning designations, Accredited Investment Fiduciary designation, Registered Securities Principal, B.S. in business from U.C. Berkeley, Insurance Agent and Price Waterhouse alumni. However, Peter is prouder to be able to implement all of these skills sets when assessing client’s unique financial situations. Few advisors or firms have the training and experience to deliver such a comprehensive approach. PTWM can complete what is needed from planning conception through implementation.

This approach provides the most client satisfaction and positive feedback to PTWM. “We are often told by clients that our comprehensive approach implementing strategic tax planning is the missing element not found from other advisors. The challenge today is that clients have too much information coming at them daily. They need an experienced professional can that stay current with all new tax laws and interpret what is important and relevant to their situation. Our comprehensive financial approach can’t be replaced by software, hardware or websites. One of the greatest added value returns we offer our clients are tax savings which can sometimes be higher than actual investment returns” states Peter. Most clients first come to PTWM as a CPA Tax Client or for a Comprehensive Financial Review. Both approaches allow PTWM to find tax savings and efficiencies which are often the greatest source of financial returns. More importantly, Peter states that this process allows PTWM to learn about each individual’s personal life goals that normally don’t come to life when just looking at the numbers. Unlike most CPAs, Peter is an extroverted people person that wants a personal relationship. This philosophy is the backbone of how PTWM works with each client.

The core tenants of this philosophy are to help each individual maximize their return on life through the various life stages. 1. Organization: We will help bring order to your financial life. 2. Accountability: We will help you follow through on your financial commitments. 3. Objectivity: We bring insight form the outside to help you avoid emotionally driven decisions in important tax and money matters. 4. Proactivity: We work with you to anticipate your life transitions and to be financially prepared for them. Time spent in preparation avoids time spent in reparation. 5. Education: We will explore what specific knowledge will be needed to succeed in your situation. 6. Partnership: We attempt to help you achieve the best life possible but will work in concert with you, not just for you, to make this possible. Casanova Ristorante and Cocktail Lounge By Jody Robinson

If you’re in the mood for delicious, authentic Italian fare served in a romantic atmosphere where the owners and staff make you feel like a personal guest in their homes, look no further than Casanova Ristorante in Dana Point.

can happily attest that literally everything my husband and I have tried on the menu here has been nothing short of superb. The service is alway excellent – attentive and unobtrusive – the ambiance is warm and friendly and its popular cocktail lounge featuring specially selected wine list (and full bar) has a loyal following among locals and visitors alike.

Start with the Mozzarella Caprese, which arrives with slices of fresh tomato topped with creamy buffalo mozzarella cheese and basil and served with virgin olive oil. Another popular pick is the antipasto misto made up of a selection of cured meats and complementary cheeses and my personal fave: the Carpaccio al Salmone defined by crisp romaine, capers, radicchio topped with smoked salmon, lemon and olive oil. For the main course, Tim’s favorite dishes include the “Pink Lady Fettuccine” made with chicken and sundried tomatoes tossed in a creamy Alfredo sauce and a flavorful Rigatoni Mamma Rosa with Italian sausage and mushrooms in a tomato sauce with a touch of cream. My favorites include the Lasagne al Forno which arrives with layers of perfectly al dente pasta, ricotta

cheese and meat sauce baked with mozzarella cheese. A seafood aficionado? Options abound – ranging from the Linguini Vongole Veraci (long, flat pasta with baby Manila clams sautéed in a white wine sauce) and Farfalle al Salmone (bowtie pasta with smoked salmon tossed in a cream and tomato sauce with a touch of vodka) to the Linguini alla Pescatora (long, flat pasta with fresh fish of the day, shrimp, calamari, mussels and clams in a light tomato sauce. Portions are generous, but if you’ve saved room for a little something sweet … try the crème brulee with its perfectly carmelized top or the homemade tiramisu, a traditional favorite or an equally delicious warm chocolate cake accompanied by vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and drizzled with a rich chocolate sauce. Casanova Ristorante is located at 33585 Del Obispo St. in Dana Point (at the corner of Stonehill). For information or reservations, call 949.496.0992 or visit www.casanovaristorante.com

Pets of the Month Five month old Gianni is quite the charmer. With his big green eyes and outgoing personality, Gianni is quick to make friends with both cats and humans alike. Come on in and you will see that once you meet this playful little guy he’s sure to win your heart.

Jacinda is a one and a half year old kitty with a very sweet personality. She is friendly and curious and likes to greet new visitors. Jacinda gets along well with other cats and would make a great lap cat in just about any home. Babette is a lady who knows just what she wants. Three years old, she is ready to settle down in her forever home. Babette has an independent personality and would do best as the only dog in a home where she can be showered with attention.

This scruffy cutie is Anna, a calm little girl who wants nothing more than to be in your lap. She enjoys playing in the yard with other small dogs. Anna would do well in a quiet home where she can finally settle in.

Understanding Medicare with Independent Broker

Sherry Meradji By Ann Laurence

It’s rare to come across someone who can flat out explain what Medicare is - the ins and outs, more than just a remedial nod to its place in the insurance world. D and the Medicare Supplemental Plan. I can help people choose the right plan to fit their budget and needs. I care about my clients, and honesty and integrity is very important to me.”

ften, even those who have worked in insurance have to find their way out of the labyrinthine complications. Sherry Meradji came to it when she decided to embark on her own. Having previously sold small business group insurance, she got her fair share of questions about Medicare. What is it? How does it work? Do you offer it? What’s the cost? “I thought, if this is so complicated for me having worked in insurance for

15 years, it would be even harder for seniors to fully understand.” No stranger to providing the highest level of customer service possible for her clients, Sherry pivoted, diving into the specifics of Medicare and dealing with each issue until resolved. “Medicare doesn’t cover everything. Before enrolling in Medicare, you need to know the difference between the ‘parts’ of Medicare. There are important faces between Part A, Part B, Part C, Part

… if (Medicare) is so complicated for me having worked in insurance for 15 years, I imagined it would be even harder for seniors to fully understand. 58 September 2019

As an independent broker, Sherry can respond to her clients same day: drilling down into the nitty gritty each client presents her with, like what benefits they have if already enrolled, and what exactly happens when they become eligible. And when she isn’t at the office? Biking, walking, mystery novels, and movies fill Sherry’s free time. “It’s all in the balance- insurance is there so you can actually enjoy your life without worrying all the time. That’s what I’m here to help you find at the end of the day: balance.”

Full Strands, Inc. By Jody Robinson

It’s exceptionally rare to find hair artists who truly cares about their customers’ needs, are dedicated to finding the perfect solution – and have the skill and experience to actually achieve your desired results.

ith years of experience helping women who have fine and thinning hair challenges, Debora Routhe, owner of Laguna Hills-based Full Strands, Inc. is the go-to professional for clients seeking non-surgical hair replacement options. Debora is an educator, American Board Certified Haircolorist and a cutting specialist. She has created a beautiful space with private rooms, where women with hair challenges would actually want to go. Together with her incredible assistant Van Vo, she takes exceptional care of her clients. “When it comes to hair extensions or hair restoration/replacement, it’s not one size fits all,” says Debora. “What sets my business apart from others is my dedication to continuing education. I continually seek to discover better products and techniques to give my customers the hair of their dreams. Further, I am a full-time behind the chair hairdresser. I am well versed in all aspects of color, design, and styling. This experience allows me to make all hair systems and extensions look incredibly natural and undetectable.” Ten years ago, after an increasing number of her clients came to her with fine and thinning hair concerns, Debora made it her mission to find ways to help. “I sought out solutions and became certified in numerous techniques,” she says. “My business in the non-surgical hair replacement industry has grown by word of mouth from my satisfied customers. I feel that I am truly mak-

ing a difference for women and men who felt for so long that they had nowhere to go and could find no acceptable solutions for their fine and thinning hair. I have seen self-confidence come back for the clients we serve. They no longer feel self conscious or embarrassed of their appearance. We are excited to come to work every day and transform our clients into the best version of themselves. We live to make people feel beautiful!” Equally passionate about giving back to the community, Full Strands supports South County Outreach, a non-profit organization dedicated to preventing hunger and homelessness by helping people help themselves with a food pantry, homeless prevention counseling, and rapid rehousing programs. “The most rewarding aspect of owning this business is that we get to do what we want to do,” says Debora. “We get to choose the products, the hair systems, extensions, and the tools we work with. We selected the salon decor and pick the music we listen to. We have created a relaxing, private environment for our clients to enjoy and in which our creativity can flourish.”

oxy coatings can also be removed during this same process. “Despite the fact that Coatings Industry requires concrete to at least be diamond ground before installing a new coating system, many of my competitors will install their coatings right over raw or pressure washed concrete just to save a few bucks - I will never do that” says Paul.

It’s Not Epoxy, It’s SpartaFlex!

or nearly 40 years, southern California homeowners have used Epoxy for garage and industrial floor coating projects despite its tendency to yellow, it’s soft and easy to scratch surface and it’s tendency to be permanently damaged by the hot, high performance tires found on most cars in the OC area. Today OC homeowners don’t have to settle for Epoxy and all of its flaws anymore. SpartaFlex is an advanced, next generation 100% solids polyaspartic floor coating that gives your garage a beautiful finish that is 3x harder than epoxy, resists yellowing while also resisting permanent damage from hot tires. Perhaps best of all, SpartaFlex comes with a much better warranty than Epoxy.

Perkins Custom Coatings has been installing SpartaFlex on OC garage floors for nearly 12 years and has completed over 8,000 floors during that period of time. Its CEO and owner, Paul Frankel is considered by many to be the most knowledgeable contractor in the local market. “Unlike many of our competitors, we strive to do an onsite assessment including a moisture test for every floor coating project we install and instead of using the ‘one size fits all’ approach, we develop a coating solution that we believe will last for decades not just for a few years.” Perkins uses only the most advanced surface preparation methods available and will either diamond grind or shot blast every floor that he installs. Old, failing, yellowed ep-

Perkins also is known for its professional and unique approach to repairing concrete cracks. “Anyone can slap some crack repair paste to cosmetically fix a crack” says Paul. A year later, when the concrete moves again and damages their brand new floor coating, the devastated homeowner will learn that this damage is not covered by the typical Epoxy warranty. “We are the only company that I know of that uses a ‘structural crack repair’ technique to fix cracks. The process is so effective we can offer our customers a warranty that can cover future damage from cracks!” says Paul. After the surface prep is completed, a very effective moisture control primer is applied to the concrete. “This is extremely important” says Paul because for many homes built in Socal before 2005, elevated moisture vapor levels in the garage concrete can have a detrimental impact on floor coatings. Paul does a fast and non-destructive moisture test for every one of the pre-2005 homes he visits and develops a unique installation plan for each home. For newer homes, Paul and his crew can use a basic primer that dries a bit faster allowing installation of a garage floor in as little as one day! The color chips that give the Perkins floor its legendary appearance are sandwiched between this primer and finish coat. Perkins carries the widest selection of colors and sizes in the market and uses a ‘full chip broadcast’, not a partial sprinkling of chips like many of its competitors. “The full chip broadcast gives the floor a consistent appearance and makes the floor much more durable and helps hide dirt better than the partial broadcast finish” says Paul. Finally, Perkins installs the SpartaFlex polyaspartic finish coat and the finished garage comes to life. “Epoxy & SpartaFlex floor coatings are virtually identical in appearance when they are first installed” says Paul. “However, when you will really begin to appreciate your SpartaFlex floor is a few months down the road when you start to see problems develop with your Epoxy floor. If there was a better material on the market, I would be selling it, but there isn’t and that is why we love selling SpartaFlex.”

For more information or to see for yourself the advantages of SpartaFlex over Epoxy, you can call Perkins Custom Coatings, at 866-330-1DAY (1329) or visit their informative website at www.perkinscustomcoatings.com. 62 September 2019
