(I explain how inflation factors in below.)
I say “magic” because if you put 10 people in a room, you’ll get 10 different opinions about how much you should save for retirement. And this estimate is no different. Northwestern Mutual surveyed 4,588 adults and found:
The new “magic” number for a comfortable retirement is $1.46 million.
It’s up 15% from last year’s $1.27 million number and is also an eye-popping 53% higher than the 2020 estimate.
Broken down by generation, the numbers get even bigger.
Gen Z and Millennials expect to need around $1.6 million to comfortably retire. And folks with over $1 million saved believe they’ll need nearly $4 million to be comfortable.
Does the average American actually need $1.46 million to retire comfortably?
Probably not. Another “magic” number from Fidelity suggests Americans should have 10x their income saved by age 67. If we 10x the median household income of $74,580, we get $745,800. That’s about half of the first “magic” number. For some Americans, $750k will be enough to retire on. For others, it won’t be nearly enough to support the lifestyle they want.
Planning for retirement isn’t about “magic” numbers. When we consider that the average retirement savings hovers around $88,000, the gap between desire and reality has never been greater. Most people don’t really know how much money they will need in retirement, and can wildly overestimate it. As much as humans like to look for simple answers and rules to follow, turning a portfolio into retirement income is complex. I wish I could give each person in that survey an advisor to help them calculate their own retirement target instead of guessing.
Inflation is weighing heavily on our fears for the future. Inflation has been very high for the last few years, and (in my opinion) the survey reflects the worry many feel about how much prices are rising. And how long high inflation will linger.
The latest March report shows that prices rose 3.5% over the last 12 months.
That’s stronger than analysts had expected, and increases concerns that inflation isn’t actually tamed yet. This negative surprise is likely to push back a Fed interest rate cut and stoke market volatility. We’re keeping an eye on the situation and will be in touch with updates as needed.

Ask a teenager what career path they're interested in a pursuing and you'll likely hear a different answer in each year of his or her high school career. Which is why I was all the more impressed when I learned that Ivan Ho, DDS used to tell customers at his first job bagging groceries that he wanted to be a dentist. At the age of 15, mind you.
All throughout my youth, I wondered why people didn’t like going to the dentist. That all changed when I moved away from home to go to college, and had to find a new dentist for the first time. That experience opened my eyes to how intimate dentistry is and how vulnerable you feel if you are not comfortable in the dental office.
Your smile/mouth is the first thing people notice when they speak to you. Finding someone you trust to take care of your dental hygiene is im perative to enjoying the confidence a beautiful smile gives you. Dr. Ho is one of those select few dentists you can trust. From the moment you meet him, you are immediately touched by his warm nature and empathy.
Dr. Ho has been caring for patients for over twenty years and has won numerous awards and reviews that focus not only on his excellency within dentistry, but also the warmth with which he treats his patients - as welcome guests and friends.
As a University of Southern California School of Den tistry graduate and an award-winning boardcertified dentist, Dr. Ho lectures nationally and internationally about both cosmetic and implant
dentistry and was recently named a Diplomate of the International Academy of Dental Implantology (IADI). His expertise and warm demeanor have earned him the respect and trust of both colleagues and patients.
“As a doctor myself, extensive knowledge and expertise is important, says Patient Steve H., MD. “Dr Ho is truly an expert!”
Local school teacher Angela P. echoes the sentiment and adds: “I’ve been searching for a dentist with honesty and compassion, I found Dr Ho through a co-worker and refer all my friends and family to him.”
Dr. Ho has had more than his fair share of time in the dental chair as a patient. This has given him the unique perspec-
“I had extra teeth and gum issues that required multiple gum and oral surgeries from my childhood all through my adolescence,” says Dr. Ho. “Despite the many and varied procedures I went through, I was fortunate enough to see wonderful providers and I was extremely grateful for the care they gave me. The experience of rectifying my own oral health led me to pursue dentistry. I wanted to give back to a profession that changed my life.”
In 1992, Dr. Ho started his practice in Laguna Hills and added a second office in Rancho Santa Margarita and with great dedication and hard work, cared for residents of both cities.
“As my children started to grow up, I realized that I wanted to spend more time with them while I could,” he says. “So I sold my Laguna Hills location and focused on RSM, which is where I lived."
Now that his children are grown, Dr. Ho relocated back to Laguna Hills and is thrilled to be back caring for patients who got him started over two decades ago.
“It is not just fillings, crowns, implants, cosmetic dentistry or cleanings: it’s ‘beyond the nuances’ dentistry,” he says. “Your oral health plays a very important role in your overall health and your ability to enjoy the simple pleasures of life like eating good food. After all, your smile is an indication of what is within.”

Finding the right care for your loved one can feel daunting, but you don’t have to do it alone. Since 2012, we’ve been helping seniors in Laguna Woods Village and the surrounding areas to stay safe, happy, and independent in the comfort of their own homes.
We truly believe that a senior’s quality of life is enhanced when they are surrounded by people who genuinely care about their well-being. Our goal is to ensure that your loved one feels safe, supported, and loved, all while allowing them to remain in the comfort of their own home.
We recently spoke with Segal Ronen, the President of Your Home Care and an expert in the field, to learn more about the vital services they provide and the many benefits of home care.
Q: What inspires the care you provide?
A: We love what we do and our mission is simple: we believe in blessing lives. We aim to make a meaningful difference in the lives of seniors and their families. By providing compassionate care, we are honored to walk alongside families, offering support during a time when love and patience are needed most.
Q: What makes Your Home Care special?
A: We believe great care starts with heart. Our caregivers are warm,

Q: Why is it important to keep seniors in their own homes?
A: Keeping seniors home offers emotional, physical, and mental benefits. Studies show that seniors who age in place tend to be happier and healthier longer. At home, seniors can maintain their routines, enjoy familiar surroundings, and engage in activities
they love—all of which contribute to a better quality of life.
Q: Can you tell us about your caregivers?
A: Our caregivers are handpicked for their kindness, professionalism, and dedication. Every team member is registered, background-checked, and fingerprinted, so you can trust that your loved one is in safe, caring hands.
Whether it’s sharing a laugh, or simply being there during a difficult moment, our caregivers become an integral part of the lives of those they
care for, offering not just physical support, but emotional and social connection.
Q: What services do you provide?
A: The most common services we provide are:

A: We’ve been serving Orange County seniors since 2012, we’ve helped countless families find compassionate, dependable care. Our reputation for excellence is built on trust and we are deeply invested in our local community and the wonderful people we get to serve.
Q: How do I know if my loved one needs home care?
A: If they’re struggling with daily tasks, feeling lonely, or having trouble moving around safely, or can no longer drive, home care can make all the difference. We step in to provide the right level of support while allowing them to remain in the home they love.
Q: Is home care flexible?
A: Absolutely! We offer customized care plans that fit your loved one’s unique needs, whether they need a few hours of help each week or fulltime support. Some clients are home and need assistance while others need us after a hospital or skilled nursing stay.

We love our pets. They’re family. They greet us at the door, curl up with us on the couch, and occasionally stare at us with an intensity that makes us question who’s really in charge. But for all their charm, pets are basically tiny, furry chaos machines with zero regard for carpet warranties.
Whether it’s a surprise puddle, the infamous hair tumbleweeds drifting across your floors, or a “gift” discovered behind the couch weeks too late—being a pet parent means being on constant cleanup duty.
So, let’s talk strategy.
Pet messes, like bad decisions, are best dealt with immediately. The longer you wait, the deeper they go— into your carpet, your floorboards, and eventually, your soul.
For liquid messes (you know the kind), blot—don’t rub. Rubbing just spreads the mess around like a toddler with finger paint. Use paper towels or a clean cloth and press down firmly to absorb as much as you can. Then follow with a pet-safe enzymatic cleaner to break down the odor-causing proteins.
If you don’t have enzymatic cleaner on hand, a mixture of white vinegar and water can work in a pinch— though your house might smell like a salad for a bit.
2.
The Endless Battle
Pet hair has magical powers. It finds its way into every corner of your house, your laundry, and sometimes even your lunch. Regular brushing helps reduce shedding, but for what still makes it to the floor, here’s your toolkit:
Pro tip: Never use ammonia-based cleaners. To pets, ammonia smells a lot like urine. That’s not a deterrent— it’s an invitation.
For those moments when your beloved companion decides the living room is the ideal place to throw up the sock they swallowed, act fast:
1. Scoop up solids (sorry).
2. Blot the area with a paper towel.
3. Mix a small amount of dish soap with warm water and gently dab.
• Rubber squeegee or gloves: Run them across fabric surfaces and carpets to pull up hair like a magnet.
• Vacuum with a HEPA filter: Especially if you have allergy-prone humans in the house. Bonus points if it has a pet hair attachment.
• Lint rollers (aka your new best friend): Keep one in every room like fire extinguishers, but for fur.
Some pets love marking their “territory,” even if that territory happens to be your new area rug. In these cases, thorough cleaning isn’t just about removing stains—it’s about removing the scent.
If your pet keeps going back to the same spot, chances are the odor hasn’t been fully eliminated (at least to their super-sniffers). This is where enzyme cleaners really shine—they digest the bacteria causing the smell instead of just masking it.
4. Rinse with plain water and blot again.
5. Finish with an enzyme cleaner.
And yes, we all have a “sacrificial towel” in the laundry closet. You’re not alone.
When Pet Messes Are Just the Beginning…
Now, for most pet-related messes, a good cleaning routine and a sense of humor are all you need. But sometimes the problem runs deeper—literally.
If your pet’s accident soaked through to the subfloor, if you’re smelling mold, noticing discolored spots on the walls, or dealing with persistent odors no cleaner can touch—it might be time to bring in the pros.
At Steamatic of Orange County, we specialize in handling the bigger messes—the ones your vacuum fears and your mop refuses to speak to. From mold remediation and water damage to fire & smoke restoration and even chemical spill cleanup, we’ve seen (and cleaned) it all.
So keep loving your pets and cleaning up their messes—we’ll be here when the cleanup needs a little more muscle than a lint roller and a prayer.

Orange County is known for its sunny days, vibrant communities and beautiful homes. However, the region’s warm climate also makes it a hotspot for pests, including a wide variety of insects and rodents. For residents and business owners, maintaining a pest-free environment is not just a convenience-it’s a necessity. With over 10 years of industry experience Shimmy Pest Control, has emerged as a trusted partner in the fight against these unwelcome intruders, offering comprehensive, customized solutions.
“I absolutely love small business. The care you get comes with the passion of the business.,” says client Marlena G. “I learned so much about my pest problem and how to avoid it in the future. Shimmy was on time and very professional ... Highly recommend Shimmy Pest Control.”
In the following interview, he addresses commonly asked questions regarding termite infestations and treatment.
Q: How much damage can termites cause to my property?
A: Termites eat wood continuously, 24/7, and even a single colony can contain hundreds of thousands of individuals. If left untreated, they can compromise a home’s structural integrity, sometimes for years before being noticed.
Q: How can I tell if my home has termites? What are the signs?
A: Common signs of subterranean termite infestation include mud tubes on exterior walls or foundations, discarded wings from termite swarmers, blistered or hollow-sounding wood or small holes in wood and piles of salt and pepper like piles of dust.
Q: What attracts termites to my home?
A: Termites are attracted to moisture, wood, and warmth. Wood piles near the foundation, leaky pipes and poor drainage can all increase the risk of infestation – it’s important to keep areas dry and remove wood debris.
Q: When are termites most active or visible?
A: Termites are active year-round, but homeowners are most likely to notice termites during swarming season in early spring when winged termites that look like flying ants emerge to start new colonies.
Q: How can I prevent termites from infesting my home?
A: Eliminate moisture around the foundation. Repair leaks promptly. Keep gutters and downspouts clear. Maintain an 18-inch gap between soil and wood portions of your home. Remove wood debris and mulch near the foundation and regularly inspect your home for signs of termites.
Q: What are the main types of termite treatments?
A: Professional subterranean termite treatments include soil treatments (liquid termiticides applied around the foundation); bait systems (stations that attract and eliminate colonies); wood treatments (direct application to infested or at-risk wood) and fumigation (mainly for drywood termites).
Q: Will fumigation kill all termites in my home?
A: Fumigation is 100% effective for drywood termites but not for subterranean termites, which require different soil treatments. The type of treatment depends on the termite species and the extent of the infestation.
For Orange County residents and business owners, pest control is not a luxury-it’s a necessity. Shimmy Pest Control offers the expertise, reliability, and peace of mind needed to keep properties safe, healthy, and pest-free. With a free quote and inspection available, there’s no reason to let pests take over. Bugs have a place, but your home isn’t it!

In interviewing scores of entrepreneurs over the last 20+ years, I’ve learned that sometimes a business owners’ career trajectory is a straight line. For others, finding their true calling might have taken a bit more of a circuitous route. But in virtually every instance, the most successful professionals are those who are passionate about what they do. So much so that their daily responsibilities don’t feel much like work at all.
Such is the case for Cesar Jimenez and his wife, Adria, who initially followed a different path before finding their shared passion for the home improvement industry. Today they own and operate a number of local businesses, including the San Clemente-based Coastal Shades, which specializes in motorized window coverings, blinds, interior and exterior shades, shutters and drapery.
“My previous career had me traveling all over the country selling hardware and software for a telematics company,” says Cesar. “After years of living the traveling-salesman life and missing out on a lot of time with my wife and daughters, I decided to look into other career options.”
Sitting on a park bench on a family vacation in Colorado, watching his kids ice skate, Cesar’s wife turned to him and asked why not start a business there? The very same day they started the search, they found a gentleman selling his window coverings company. When one door closes, a window opens, but not many blow open quite so quickly following the decision to make a life change. They immediately began the purchasing process, and a few short months later moved to the Centennial State to watch their new business flourish.
When deciding to relocate to San Clemente to be closer to his wife’s family, the couple were excited for the opportunity to “be a part of the community for which we have such fond memories.”
Although new to the area, Cesar and Adria bring years of experience to Coastal Shades, the sister company of North County Blinds, a respected name in the window-covering industry in San Diego since 1985.
“Continuing the legacy of excellence set forth by North County Blinds, Coastal Shades brings decades of experience, knowledge, and expertise to every project we undertake,” says Cesar. “Our team of highly skilled professionals are passionate about creating stunning window treatments that perfectly complement any space.”
The hallmarks of Coastal Shades’ service includes top-quality craftsmanship, personalized attention to detail, and a steadfast dedication to ensuring that every customer’s vision is brought to life.
“We take pride in offering a wide range of design options, utilizing the latest materials and technologies to provide our clients with the best solutions for their unique needs,” says Cesar. “Our goal is to make your buying process as simple as possible. And our specialty is offering a customized, bespoke experience where we eliminate the headache. That’s it.” Sounds like a worthy goal to pursue after all.

I was doing a bit of research on word origins recently in helping my son with a high school assignment. I discovered the root “hospes,” which comes from “hostis.” But what was interesting was that the etymology actually branches off into “host,” “guest,” or “stranger.” And gives us the word hospitality.
As defined, hospitality is “the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers.” In giving my son examples of real-life application, I thought of Jay Minor. As the owner of Assisted Living Locators, Jay lives the term hospitality as a daily discipline and practice. Those he serves would likely describe it as life-changing.
In March of 2024, Jay purchased and opened Assisted Living Locators, a no-cost (to the client) senior living placement service whereby Jay and his team help those in need navigate the confusing landscape of assisted living and memory care.
“We take a very personal approach to helping our clients, from personally accompanying them on every community they tour to providing trusted resources to aid them in every step of their journey,” he says. “We have a long list of specialists that we recommend for senior real

estate transactions, reverse mortgages, moving, downsizing, insurance, healthcare options, insurance needs, hospice care and more.”
Doing the hard work of researching, scheduling, and making phone calls is just the tip of the iceberg - the real job is to ensure that their clients find the right place for their loved ones to receive the care they need. Like the textbook definition of hospitality, Jay’s goal is to be a helpful advocate and guide clients through the entire process at no cost to the client.
A Certified Senior Advisor® and Dementia Care Certified®, Jay was formerly a pastor for nearly 25 years and “always loved helping people navigate through life’s transitions.”
“When I was searching for a new career after transitioning out of the ministry, I remembered watching my parents and my in-laws all go through every stage of senior living, even up through memory care and hospice. It was an incredibly difficult journey and I often wished I had someone to guide me and answer questions,” says the father of four grown children. “When the opportunity to open a senior living placement agency presented itself, it was a very easy decision. I wanted
to give myself to serving my clients who might be going through a difficult time, and perhaps, give them the support that I wish I had been given when I was on my own journey.”
“Jay was the perfect fit for my mom,” says Client Laura B. “He has the most gentle spirit and has helped guide her to make the right decision. I don’t believe we could have been as successful without his guidance and support. He’s willing to go above and beyond just conversations and information. He’s provided great referral resources that we can trust to complete this transition. I’d recommend Jay to anybody looking for help and support.”
Client Robert S. agrees with Laura’s assessment and adds “what really
stood out was how well-liked Jay is by both staff and residents at many of the facilities we visited. He has clearly built strong relationships in the community, which reassured us that he is genuinely invested in the well-being of those he serves. Thanks to Jay, my mom is now in a warm, welcoming environment where she feels safe and comfortable. We are so grateful for his guidance and dedication during a challenging time.”
Jay holds a RCFE Administrator’s License from the State of California and is a member of the Foundation of Senior Services, a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide seniors and their families with education, options and resources so they can choose quality care and support that will help preserve their independence for as long as possible.
As a member of the National Referral Placement Alliance (NRPA), Jay strives to help the organization further its mission “to professionalize the industry through standardized best practices and code of ethics.
“I understand how difficult and challenging searching for assisted living can be,” says Jay, who lives in Ladera Ranch with his wife Traci. “I want to be your partner to help you find the care that your loved ones deserve.” An act of kindness next on my list of word origins to look up.

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.
Look especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.
An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.
Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.
1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.
2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life.
3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling
A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?
B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?
C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?
D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.
E - Evolution: Has it changed?
F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others?
4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

here is something truly special about a big reveal. Movie makers dwell in that space – the cinematic breath before something spectacularly dramatic happens. Turns out, Carlos Jimemez has been known to get caught up in it too: but not for the reasons you might think. They’re more, well, craftsmanship oriented.
“After years of working in the bath remodeling industry – working with high-end finishes, innovative designs and exceptional customer service, I saw an opportunity to bring luxuryquality bathrooms to homeowners at an affordable price,” he says.
Founding Luxury Bath Designs of Orange County two years ago was a project that created not only the memorable spaces homeowners across Southern California could enjoy, but allowed his passion for home remodeling to present itself as a stress-free process for each client.
“What truly sets us apart is our passion for craftsmanship and customer experience,” he says. “We don’t just remodel bathrooms, we create stunning spaces that homeowners will love. We deliver premium designs without the premium price tag. Although the company may be young, we’re designing and crafting spaces that will last for years to come.
looking for a sleek shower conversion, a spa-like retreat or an accessibility upgrade, they’re dedicated to bringing your vision to life with precision and care.
Exceptional customer service and decades of experience often translate to fast turnarounds. When I was younger, my Mom loved to read me the book “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie.” The plot essentially revolves around an ever-growing list of to-do’s that had to be accomplished, all set into motion by the simple act of giving a mouse a cookie. This tale came back to me recently when I purchased a new television at Best Buy.
What was a simple shopping trip ended up being an adult’s version of that circular tale. If you give a grownup a television, they’ll have to measure their wall. When they measure the wall, they’ll realize they may actually have room for a bigger television. When they buy the bigger television, they’ll find out they have no idea how to mount it to the wall. When they start mounting it to the wall, they’ll see that the power outlets are all in the wrong
places. When they realize the outlets need to be moved, they’ll call an electrician. (This could go on forever.)
Luckily for clients who have been on the receiving end of ReelTime’s patient, intelligent, and personalized service, the rabbit hole of home automation doesn’t have to swallow you entirely. With the help of their independent certified Control4 dealer, it’s easy to update your home without upending your entire life.
After all, the true luxury of an integrated entertainment system is really dependent on its ability to deliver seamless entertainment. By placing every control at your fingertips, the team at ReelTime helps homeowners manage everything from how brightly lit your family room is, to your streaming devices - all with a single remote. And best yet? You can control your whole home from the comfort of your couch- even seeing who is at the front door, without ever
leaving your seat. Simple, clean, and uncluttered.
And on the home entertainment front … when you started planning for your ultimate home theater set-up and sound system, could you find the right media cabinetry for your particular space – cabinetry that wouldn’t catch on fire from the heat of the equipment, or that would simply
look good in the room? Did you understand half of what the televisions, receivers and other devices could do, and did you have anyone to hold your hand to make sure you weren’t overspending for what you wanted?
Big box retailers, the professed champions of value, are happy to sell you any home theater and sound equipment you think you might like, and send you off to figure it out at home. That’s what they do. And that’s all they do.
If you want the home theater system that you envision, seek the services of Owners Skip Myers and Jon Colburn and their team of experienced professionals at ReelTime to take you from start to finish for the home theater or sound system of your dreams.
“Usually there is a part of the job that you find you just can’t do by yourself,” says Skip, who has overseen the design and installation of thousands of home theater and sound systems over the course of 40-plus years in the business. “You get your brand new television home, you’re so excited, then you realize you need to move an outlet or none of the cabinets you can find will fit your space.
We’re here to make sure you get the equipment that will give you what you want and the system that will work with that equipment, without leaving you to fend for yourself.”
The technicians and designers who work with clients are all ReelTime employees, knowledgeable in all home theater and sound technologies. First, they work closely with you to determine what you’re looking for. Then they custom design every aspect of the project, from wiring to custom-built cabinets, frames, or built-in wall designs. Finally, licensed, in-house contractors install your entertainment system with care and precision.
There are a couple of things that people may not think about when they embark upon the road to their own home entertainment system.
“You need to think about your home theater goals,” says Jon. “You don’t have to do everything at once – you can do it bit by bit – but if you know where you’re going, you’ll save money and when it’s all said and done, you’ll have exactly what you want and what you will actually use. We’re here to help you determine your goals.”
Skip and Jon are also advocates for getting what you’ll use, which is part of the design and planning process.
“You can buy everything you want to, but if you can’t operate it, what’s the point?” says Jon. “There’s the televi-
sion, DVD and Blue-ray; there’s the receiver, there’s Apple TV… it’s all great, but how do you get them to work together? We’re big advocates of the universal remote. Not everyone knows how to get the most out of their systems with one powerful remote – they’re not expensive, but the best ones are computer-based. We’ll set that up for you so you’re getting the most out of your custom system.”
It’s easy to assume that personal service is expensive, but a conversation with the experts at ReelTime and the experts at ReelTime is free. Ultimately, in planning your purchases for the right outcome, you’re likely to save money while avoiding chilling setbacks. The only chilling you want to be doing is in front of your fantasy home theater system.

Duane Betts is an American guitarist and singer-songwriter. The Sarasota, Florida native cut his teeth as a teen sitting-in regularly with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, The Allman Brothers Band, before relocating to Southern California and leading rock outfits Backbone69 and Whitestarr. Betts next spent nearly a decade playing guitar alongside his father, Dickey Betts, in his group, Great Southern. As well, he was a touring guitarist for folk-rockers Dawes, and a member of the brief supergroup, Jamtown, featuring G. Love, Donovan Frankenreiter, and Cisco Adler.

My husband, Tim, two teens and I have pretty varied culinary palates – my son and I fancy ourselves fledgling foodies and seafood aficionados with an emphasis on ethnic dishes, my daughter leans toward familiar vegetarian favorites and Tim is our family’s resident carnivore – all meat, all the time. If your tribe is anything like mine, you’ll happily embrace any eatery that offers an abundance of options for everyone. But finding one that also delivers on consistently delicious dishes in a fast casual concept that elevates the family-friendly dining experience? For starters, the crispy asparagus spears with lemon-garlic aioli is completely addictive and the dolmades (grape leaves stuffed with turkey, rice, pine nuts, raisin and dill and topped with a sweet lemon sauce) and the yummy yellow lentil soup are my personal faves.

You will literally have your work cut out for you in deciding between the sheet number of mouthwatering options including a plethora of starters, salads, homemade dips, flatbread pizzas and wraps, kabob plates, customized entrées and an array of sweet treats for dessert.
Popular entrees range from a tender roasted half chicken, lamb chops, filet of sole, lamb sausage, grilled salmon, kabobs (shrimp, lamb, chicken or steak) paired with your choice of small bites (think oven roasted potatoes, stewed green beans, basmati rice) and a super fragrant, perfectly doughy pita for dipping.
If you’ve saved space for something sweet –the homemade baklava (phyllo dough, layered with almond, walnut, pistachio, cinnamon and drizzled with honey citrus syrup) with vanilla bean ice cream is an fan favorite. Our son, who considers himself somewhat of an expert on tiramasu, raved about Olive Pit’s rendition made with shredded phyllo, marscapone, espresso and chocolate.
Co-Owner/Chef Yianni Koufodontis’ passion for Mediterranean foods is clearly influenced by his own upbringing where “cooking is more than an art form, it’s a way of life.” Growing up in a culture “where eating is the focal point of all Greek family gatherings” inspired Yianni and his partner George Makridis to open the first Olive Pit location in Brea in 2008, followed by the equally popular Surf City location two years later. My husband and I fancy ourselves fledgling foodies and oenophiles. A favored pastime? Enjoying inventive cuisine and a great glass of wine with good friends - sharing diverse dishes and exchanging tasting notes adds a layer of fun and discovery that elevates any meal. An experience made all the more memorable when the locale and ambiance are as in comparable as offered at Lantern’s Edge Restaurant at the Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa in Dana Point.
A culinary gem that beautifully marries coastal California flavors with
Mediterranean influences, Lantern’s Edge is perched above the shimmering Pacific, overlooking Dana Point Harbor. Helmed by Chef de Cuisine Kristine Davis, the menu here is quintessentially coastal-inspired, blending Mediterranean and California classics to craft a new “land-to-sea” chapter in the resort’s culinary offerings. Her focus? Fresh, locally sourced seafood, dry-aged meats and seasonal produce - all expertly paired with a sommelier-curated wine list and an innovative craft cocktail program.
As a seafood aficionado, I went right for the hamachi crudo - a deliciously bright, refreshing take on yellowtail tuna enhanced by gin and ponzu,
calpico chili foam and charcoal-kissed strawberries. Other standout starters? Grilled maitake mushrooms (think smoked whipped feta, Fresno vinaigrette, salsify crisp and bonito flakes), West Coast oysters, burrata dip, and a fig-and-brie flatbread that according to our server has become (unsurprisingly) a favorite among regulars.
The ambiance at Lantern’s Edge is as captivating as its cuisine incorporating Mediterranean-inspired nautical elements that reflect its stunning waters-edge location.
The indoor dining room combines coastal-chic elegance with comfort - a sleek aquarium serves as a focal point while plush lounge seating and a full bar offers an inviting space for both intimate dinners and social gatherings. Sweeping ocean views define the expansive outdoor patio which features fire pits, heat lamps and string lights to create a magical atmosphere under the stars and provides the perfect venue for live music on the weekends.
For the main course? Seafood lovers are treated to exquisite options like lobster risotto made with aged Carnaroli rice, parmesan, saffron butter, and truffle gremolata, as well as charred octopus served with crispy potatoes and fennel puree. Meat lovers, like my husband, will appreciate the New Zealand rack of lamb finished with a port wine gastrique or the perfectly seared wagyu flat iron steak accompanied by snap peas, au poivre and pea tendrils.
Lantern’s Edge is the ideal dining destination for every occasion - whether you’re enjoying a romantic dinner for two, a leisurely family brunch, or simply soaking in the sunset with friends with your favorite varietal in hand.

Years ago, a friend had a birthday and her family threw her a surprise party. This is a woman I've always had the hardest time shopping for - she leans toward unique, one-of-a-kind items and decor and her tastes are always a little eclectic and a lot of fun. I called a mutual friend for some ideas and she told me something I haven’t forgotten to this day: there are two types of presents. One that means something to the receiver because it reflects what they love. The other means something to them because it reflects what you love.
might have passed over, or never looked for in the first place.

(i.e. not your regular gift purchase) She came home with the deed to a retail space that would be- come Absolutely Fabulous - a supremely unique gift and decor destination that has evolved into a Surf City staple that folks from every corner of Orange County Flock to for every milestone that calls for an extra special gift.
Her eye for curating the most incredible selection of home accent offerings and unique gifts make it easy to find the perfect item without making a million stops or needlessly scouring the vast black hole of the internet. To surprise others with such a selection, you have to have a specific passion for hunting down curious items others
The variety and uniqueness of products at Absolutely Fabulous is astounding: hand-made jewelry, Miche Bag purses (the ones where you just drop the “insides” of your into a new shell, rather than having to dump all of your stuff out!), $10 silk scarves, old-school shaving kits for men, a “Daddy’s Tool Bag” that includes diaper changing equipment, and instructional DVD, face mask and other funny items, rare paintings by successful artists, large crystal chandeliers, crystal perfume bottles, stuffed animal baby bottle covers, piggy banks for kids, “dorm survival kits” for new students, wedding party gifts, rare Disney art and collectibles, seasonal decor and gifts, Christmas decorations that range from very inexpensive bottle stoppers and tree decorations to 6-foot high collectible Santa dolls. The Legendary Coach House in San Juan Capistrano holds many records in the music universe, including its status as the oldest concert venue in the country owned by the same sole proprietor since its inception, hosting over 4.5 million guests.
Miles Davis, BB King, Bonnie Raitt, Ray Charles, Pat Benatar, Tom Jones, Johnny Cash, Sinead O’Connor, Dana Carvey and Jerrya Seinfeld are among the many legends that have performed on the club’s iconic stage.
“There aren’t a lot of places that do what we do,” says Gary Folgner, owner of the Coach House. “There are probably only two or three left standing in the country.”
This year marks the 45th anniversary of the legendary, internationally celebrated entertainment landmark, THE COACH HOUSE. The owner, Gary Folgner, at 84 years old, is still very "hands on" with the daily operations of this storied palace of music. No one has written a book yet, but they should!
Aside from the furthest seat from the stage being 40 feet away, one of the things that makes the Coach House unique is that you never know who is going to sit in. During a recent concert with Ian Hunter & the Rant Band, they were joined on stage by a guitar playing Johnny Depp. Concert goers were amazed to see the movie star performing right in front of them while they wined and dined.
For up-and-coming performers, as well as rugged veterans of music, and nationally recognized tribute acts, The Coach House has been a launch pad that continues outlasting almost all its competitors from coast
to coast. The Coach House opens its doors to host genres from Country, Rock 'n' Roll, Jazz, Americana and Blues to R&B, Soul, Progressive Rock and everything else in between.
“That’s part of what’s hard about this business; you’ve got new bands coming up, and if you don’t try them or use them, you don’t have new music,” founder Folgner continues. “That’s why sometimes you come in and you see a show, and it’s only got a hundred people; that’s probably because the band is new. But if you don’t try the new groups, you won’t have new groups for the future.”
For its 45th anniversary, The Coach House is planning a Celebratory Concert Series and a “Main Event” show, showcasing Don McLean (June 14), whose songwriting, including “American Pie,” has left an indelible mark on music history and the legendary Wayne Newton (October 3), known for

Mission Viejo Wigs is truly a family business. Not in the traditional sense, where its owners and operators share the same genes. But rather in such a way that every person who has walked through Owner Betty Darroch’s doors in the 30+ years she has been in operation immediately felt like a member of Darroch’s extended family.
As a professional hair and wig stylist since 1962, Betty began her career at CBS where her résumé reads like a celebrity screenplay starring the coifs of a veritable “who’s who” of Hollywood: Ann Margaret, Carol Lawrence, the Midnight Specials and the Sonny & Cher Show. She went on to work for the Hallelujah Hollywood Show at the MGM Hotel in Las Vegas.
But it wasn’t until she opened her own business in Mission Viejo that she felt as though she were “truly doing God’s work.”
Her clients today include people who are experiencing hair loss due to chemotherapy treatment, alopecia or other medical conditions. Betty specializes in wigs, hairpieces and toupees for women, men and children and carries only the highest quality brands. Each wig or hairpiece is custom fit to the client for the most natural look and feel – no one will know you’re wearing a wig unless you tell them.
received many compliments on her “new do” and no one was the wiser.
It’s been over nine years since my mother completed treatment and is now leading a cancer-free life. Although her own hair has long since grown back, she still often prefers to wear Betty’s wigs on “bad hair days.”
Thank you Betty!
“Hair loss, whether it is the result of illness, the aging process or heredity, can be a traumatic and emotionally draining experience,” says Betty. “We work with people on a daily basis who are facing the issue of hair loss for the first time. Our goal is to help you find the solution that works best for you and do so in a caring way that makes you realize that you are not alone.”
There are wonderful testimonials from longtime customers on her web site (missionviejowigs. com), but for me, the best testament to Betty’s genuine, caring nature came from a source closer to home.
When my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer six years ago, there were so many aspects of what she was facing - including the side effects associated wit chemotherapy treatment – that were out of our control. But my mother’s appearance was something she felt she could dictate. We knew she would lose her hair, but she was determined not to “look like a sick person.”
From the moment my mother met Betty, she knew she had found the right place and more importantly, the right person to help her. Betty shared so many stories of survival – of longtime customers and friends who fought a similar battle and won. Her warm embrace and inspired hope and help steel her resolve to maintain a positive, fighting attitude when she was diagnosed with lung cancer.
The wig Betty selected was the perfect color and style for my mother’s face (and head) shape. The wig was so natural looking that my mother

It’s a remarkable feeling when you can find someone to take your side. In relationships, sports: you name it. That one person who believes in you, makes you better, fights alongside you.
Michael Cefali matched with his person (his wife Courtney) long before law school - but their partnership extended through the long years studying for the bar and paid off in an even match that has stacked up in their favor many times over. Graduates of Chapman Law and California Western, respectively, they started the San Juan Capistrano-based Cefali & Cefali, APC in July of 2019 and have been fighting for the little guy ever since. From setting clients up with top-tier doctors and specialists, to negotiating stellar settlements, Cefali & Cefali, APC handles cases from start to finish with client health as their top priority.
Focusing on all aspects of personal injury, the Cefalis are what you might expect in such a ring: passionate, aggressive, and most importantly, honest - all traits that have contributed to the couple having recovered millions of dollars per year on behalf of their clients since opening their firm.
“The insurance companies would like you to think that they get to determine the value of your injuries, your suffering,” says Michael. “We’ll fight for every last penny because we know that you deserve it.” Clients appreciate the work that the Cefalis do. In fact, as of the date of this publication, you won’t find a single negative review of their firm anywhere on the internet.
Client Jamie shares, “I am so grateful for everything that Mike Cefali and his team did for me! Not only was he able to help me get what I was owed in my settlement and then some, but he was so responsive and kind and it was very apparent that he cared about me and my case! He and his team are so HONEST and FAIR and it was clear from start
to finish that he had my best interest in mind! Not only is he a good lawyer but he is a good person which made a world of difference for me. I could not have asked for a better experience with a personal injury attorney! I have already recommended him to all of my friends and I will continue to recommended him to anyone looking for a good lawyer! Thank you so much Cefali and Cefali!”
Another client Carrie echoes Jamie’s sentiment, “My husband and I were rear-ended on the freeway. We felt bad thinking of contacting a lawyer, but after several months of continuous pain and medical treatments, a friend recommended Michael Cefali. From the beginning, he lived up to his core values of integrity, loyalty, and vigorous advocacy. Michael is a dedicated, friendly, and competent attorney who seamlessly represented our interests and ensured the outcome was in our favor. He treated us not like a client, but like family; he was there any time we needed him. He was empathetic to our situation and worked tirelessly with all parties to represent us. We don’t trust many people, but we trust Michael and his team and would highly recommend him to anyone seeking a professional, effective, and focused attorney.”
With five staff members to back up the stellar work Michael and Courtney produce, the couple remain incredibly hands on, based on a culture of empathy, integrity and advocacy.
“We craft each case personally, build each one for trial, and remain accessible to clients,” says Michael. “Personal injury attorneys get a bad rap when really we’re the good guys. I like to think of our firm as a pirate ship. Nimble, clever, and tenacious in spite of being outspent by the adversary, we pry money from greedy insurance companies and give it to our very deserving clients.”
Giving back is the spirit of the firm, and community work creates a direct link between Michael, Courtney, and their circle in San Juan Capistrano. The couple and their team proudly supports a number of local charitable and community organizations including: The Boys and Girls Club of Capistrano Valley (Courtney is on the Board of Directors), The San Juan Capistrano Friends of the Library (Courtney is also a board member), CREER, the Pacific Marine Mammal Foundation, and Project Coyote. Michael is a member of the San Juan Capistrano Rotary Club and has been recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow.
The Cefali team’s ethics, constant communication (every client is given Michael’s personal cell phone for easy accessibility), commitment to their clients and involvement in the community keeps everyone growing stronger and healthier together. Remarkable isn’t it, that feeling when someone takes your side?

In July of 1965 the legislation creating Medicare as well as Medicaid (for lowincome individuals) passed in Congress and was signed by then President Lyndon B. Johnson.
However, Medicare services took a while to get started. On July 1st, 1966, roughly 19 million individuals aged 65 and older began receiving their Medicare benefits. Medicare beneficiaries have options on how to receive their Medicare health benefits. Many of my clients use Medicare as their primary insurance (it pays 80% of their expenses to put it in the simplest of terms). For someone to be protected from the uncovered 20% of medical expenses that has no out of pocket maximum, we add a Medicare Supplement plan (usually Plan G) to their coverage. These types of plans, also referred to as Medigap plans, were passed into law by congress in 1980.
In 1997 the Balanced Budget Act introduced a very impactful addition to the Medicare health insurance offerings. These plans are referred to as Medicare Part C or otherwise known as Medicare Advantage plans. In 1999 private insurance companies began offering Medicare Advantage plans.
By 2003 there were over 40 million people enrolled in Medicare. At this time, Medicare prescription drug coverage didn’t exist, and many seniors were paying very high costs for their prescriptions, and some were unable to afford to pay for their prescriptions. Congress then acted on expanding Medicare to cover prescription drug benefits, and Medicare Part D was introduced.
On January 1, 2006, Medicare Part D (prescription drug plans) began providing benefits to Medicare beneficiaries
Beginning in 2007, Medicare beneficiaries with higher incomes had to start paying a higher monthly premium for Medicare Part B and an assessment added on for Part D coverage. This is called IRMAA: Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount.
In 2010 the Affordable Care Act, signed by President Barack Obama, made most preventative care services free for Medicare beneficiaries.
The Inflation Reduction Act was signed into law in August of 2022. This is the beginning of several enhancements to Medicare prescription drug coverage. Beginning January of 2025, the amount that people with Medicare Part D coverage will pay annually for prescriptions is capped at $2000. There are more enhancements for Medicare Part D and Part B drugs in the coming years.
Say hello to Tex, hands down the best boy around. Something of a “gentle giant,” this eight year old German Shepherd Dog is as mild-mannered as they come. When is isn’t lounging at your side, Tex loves making new friends and playing nicely with his toys. He gets along with family members of all ages and would make a fabulous addition to just about any home.
One year old Pegasus, or “Peggy” as she’s affectionately called, is quite the fun little pup. Like most Dogos Argentino, Pegasus loves staying active and playing outdoors. She also has an affectionate side and has no qualms about being an oversized lap dog. Peggy gets along with some dogs, but would probably do best as the only pet because of her bossy personality.
One and half year old Chamberlain is such a sweet boy. Like many rabbits, he can sometimes be a little nervous with new people and environments but he doesn’t mind getting pets and kisses while being held. Chamberlain has good litter box habits and would make a nice rabbit companion for someone looking for a gentle soul to have around the house.

And believe it or not, 2025 marks the 90th anniversary of Social Security, which began in 1935 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law.
In July of 1965 the legislation creating Medicare as well as Medicaid (for low-income individuals) passed in Congress and was signed by then President Lyndon B. Johnson.
However, Medicare services took a while to get started. On July 1st, 1966, roughly 19 million individuals aged 65 and older began receiving their Medicare benefits. It took another 6 years for Medicare to be extended to individuals under age 65 who have long-term disabilities or chronic renal disease. That happened under the Nixon administration.
In 1990 congress began “standardizing” Medicare supplements. Prior to this, insurance carriers could sell Medicare Supplement plans with any benefit they wished, so long as the minimum requirements were met. All carriers now must provide plans with benefits that conform to one of 10 sets of benefits, referred to as standardized Medicare supplement plans.
In 1997 the Balanced Budget Act introduced a very impactful addition to the Medicare health insurance offerings. These plans are referred to as Medicare Part C or otherwise known
as Medicare Advantage plans. In 1999 private insurance companies began offering Medicare Advantage plans. These plans are regulated and partially funded by the government through contracts held and reviewed between the two entities annually: The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services (CMS) and the insurance companies.
This also meant that prescription drug coverage was mandatory, and if a Medicare beneficiary didn’t enroll in “credible coverage” when first eligible, they would start to accrue a lifelong LEP (late enrollment penalty).
2018 marked the year that all existing Medicare beneficiaries and those new to Medicare started receiving Medicare numbers that were an 11-digit combination of numbers and letters instead of being based on either their or their spouse’s social security number to reduce Medicare fraud and ID theft.
In 2024, there were 68.4 million people on Medicare. Over their lifetimes, most people get more from Medicare than they pay in, according to analyses by the Urban Institute, a non-partisan think tank. Medicare has evolved and grown quite a bit in the last 60 years don’t you think?

On a recent night out with fellow fledgling foodie friends, my husband Tim and I sampled the fare at The Market by the Meat Cellar for the very first time … but after such a lovely, leisurely, delicious evening, it definitely won’t be our last. A seasoned meat-and-potatoes man (pun intended), Tim was particularly excited to peruse its meat-centric menu.
Located in San Juan Capistrano’s River Street Marketplace, this vibrant culinary destination is a gathering place designed to celebrate both food and community, a vision brought to life by husband-and-wife team (Executive Chef) Anthony and (Chief Inspiration Officer) Sara Villegas.
The couple first launched their butcher-driven vision in 2016 with The Meat Cellar in Claremont, quickly earning a loyal following for their high-quality meats, thoughtfully sourced ingredients, and welcoming atmosphere. Their newest location builds on this legacy, offering a full-service steakhouse, artisan butcher counter, and curated retail space.
The Market’s ambiance strikes a rare balance between rustic charm and
modern polish. Sunlight streams in through expansive windows, illuminating farmhouse-style shelves lined with boutique homewares, fine wines and pantry treasures. The centerpiece is a gleaming butcher counter – showcasing humanely raised meats, fresh seafood, and gourmet cheeses – inviting guests to linger, learn, and shop.
As it’s core, The Market is a stake lover’s paradise. The menu spotlights a butcher-to-table ethos with every cut – think Japanese Wagyu ribeye, prime dry-aged and wet-aged cuts – hand selected and sourced from top-tier purveyors.
The Market’s butcher counter supplies a rotating selection of house-cured meats and artisanal cheeses. For starters, the charcuterie board is a must for sharing and the ridiculously delicious short rib poutine is an indulgent dish which tops hearty fries with fork tender slow-braised short ribs.
Entrees revolve around steakhouse classics with scratch-made, barbecue-inspired fare. Beautiful cuts of Japanese Kagoshima Wagyu Ribeye, Australian Wagyu Tomahawk, and Prime Dry Aged New York are all fin-
ished with the signature “TMC” blend seasoning and bone marrow butter offering hearty, robust flavors that pair perfectly with scratch-made sides.
Burger aficionado? I would be remiss in failing to mention the Fancy Burger, crafted with an 8 oz. house-ground wagyu beef patty, caramelized onion, bacon jam, Gruyère cheese, and arugula on a brioche bun.
Lean more toward seafood? The cherrywood-smoked Sapphire Salmon, accompanied by celery root purée, farro and apple slaw is another standout.
The Market by the Meat Cellar delivers on every front. Its blend of impeccable sourcing, scratch cooking, and heartfelt hospitality makes this a place where every meal tells a story and every guest feels at home
