“I have been incredibly encouraged with the results I have gotten from advertising in South County Magazine! I wasn’t sure how print advertising was going to go, but it has far exceeded my expectations! Jody has been incredible to work with and so supportive of my new company. I feel like she cares more about my success than just getting my advertising business. I recommend her to everyone I know.”

The best business decision I ever made was to advertise in South County Magazine - I’m proud to say that I have been participating since the very first issue. I have gained several hundred clients over the last decade due to my ad, and several hundred more from the referrals of my ad clients. I have a steady flow of business all year long, and South County Magazine has a lot to do with that.

SHIMMY PEST CONTROL
Keeping Orange County Homes and Businesses
Pest-Free
A LOCAL SOLUTION TO A PERSISTENT PROBLEM
Orange County is known for its sunny days, vibrant communities and beautiful homes. However, the region’s warm climate also makes it a hotspot for pests, including a wide variety of insects and rodents. For residents and business owners, maintaining a pest-free environment is not just a convenience-it’s a necessity. With over 10 years of industry experience Shimmy Pest Control, has emerged as a trusted partner in the fight against these unwelcome intruders, offering comprehensive, customized solutions.
Owner Shimmy Strzelczyk is a highly trained professional dedicated to “always going above and beyond” to provide effective, safe and transparent pest control services to his clients.
“I pride myself on treating my customer’s homes like my own,” says Shimmy. “I worked for a big pest control company for several years and was unhappy with the way the client was often treated - charged for multiple repeated visits to take care of a problem that should have been resolved in one or two visits.”
Specializing in the eradication of a wide range of pests and rodents (including ants, spiders, termites, wasps, bed bugs, cockroaches, rats, mice and gophers), Shimmy addresses both immediate infestations and long-term prevention, ensuring that his clients can enjoy their living and working spaces without the stress of unwanted guests.
SAFETY AND TRANSPARENCY AT THE FOREFRONT
Because safety is a cornerstone of his business philosophy, Shimmy uses a combination of organic and non-organic treatments, carefully selected to minimize risk to humans, pets, and the environment. He takes time to thoroughly explain the process and products used, ensuring that his clients are fully informed and comfortable with every step of the treatment.
Transparency is another key value. Shimmy believes in clear communication about the scope of work, expected outcomes, and follow-up procedures.
This openness builds trust and confidence, which in turn translates to the long-term client relationships has been instrumental in building and growing his business.
CUSTOMER SATISFACTION AND GUARANTEES
Shimmy Pest Control stands behind its work with a 30-day money-back guarantee. If clients are not completely satisfied with the results, the company will make it right. This promise, combined with overwhelmingly positive customer reviews and a 5.0-star average rating, reflects Shimmy’s dedication to client satisfaction and quality service.
“I can’t recommend Shimmy enough! He is professional, knowledgeable and truly goes above and beyond to make sure the job is done right,” says Jennifer Bennett. “He took care of our pest issue quickly and efficiently and his attention to detail gave us peace of mind. Not only is he great at what he does, but he’s friendly, reliable and always willing to answer any questions. If you’re looking for top-notch pest control, Shimmy is the one to call!
For Orange County residents and business owners, pest control is not a luxury - it’s a necessity. Shimmy Pest Control offers the expertise, reability, and peace of mind needed to keep properties safe, healthy, and pest-free. With a free quote and inspection available, there’s no reason to let pests take over. Bugs have a place, but your home isn’t it!

Hammer & Nails clearly stands out as the top option for men who place a high importance on personal style and self-care.
Feedback from HAMMER & NAILS clients:
“Staff was very polite and professional. I was given complimentary beverages and a reclined lounge chair while I waited for my barber. As someone who rarely goes to other people for my hair, she was absolutely amazing. I have since and thick African American curls and I was really happy with the results! She was so kind and talkative throughout the entire cut. She washed my hair, and my scalp has never felt better. I was more than happy to spend every last dollar for the service and gratuity. Thank you so much again!”

How Can I Tell If I Have Skin Cancer?
There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.
Look especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.
ACTINIC KERATOSIS
An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.
SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.
BASAL CELL CARCINOMA
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.
MELANOMA
Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.
WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW
1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.
2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life.
3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling
A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?
B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?
C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?
D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.
E - Evolution: Has it changed?
F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others?
4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

Redefining What’s Possible in Memory Care
A visionary approach with new paths for connection, growth, and cherished moments.
For Andrew and Laura, they knew something wasn’t right after a family trip abroad. Four years later, Andrew received a diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 49. Andrew and his wife, Laura, decided the safest option would be a memory care setting.
Before moving, they celebrated Christmas with family in the home where they raised their children and had lived for more than 24 years. Then, Laura moved with her husband of 25 years and their dog to Watermark Laguna Niguel, a boutique-style Assisted Living and Memory Care community where they’re thriving — together.
Now, they’re navigating the unexpected next chapter of their love story in a safe, supportive setting with peace of mind. Laura continues to work full time and travel internationally. Andrew finds fulfillment and purpose in the natural rhythms of daily life like taking their dog for walks, arranging flowers, leading a tea class, and spending quality time with Laura.
Grasping her husband’s hand, Laura told the Los Angeles Times, “He’s a super-happy guy. That’s been one of the biggest blessings.”
Choosing the Best Care for Your Loved One
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 6 million Americans are living with a form of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease. When someone you love has advanced memory issues, you face big choices. You may wonder if you’re capable of being a full-time caregiver. If that’s not possible, you want your loved one to live somewhere they’ll be happy, engaged, safe, and supported.
Andrew and Laura show us that life after a dementia diagnosis can still be full, loving, and joyful. It’s about following your instincts to find the right support to meet you where you are, in a secure, comfortable setting that feels like home. That’s where Watermark Laguna Niguel can help.
Challenging Traditional Assumptions
Building on Watermark Retirement Communities’ 30-plus years of experience in providing innovative, highquality memory care, Watermark Laguna Niguel supports residents and their loved ones with the signature Prema Memory SupportSM program. This unique approach brings together the latest cognitive health science and state-of-the-art wellness programming to help residents connect, grow, and engage fully.
Watermark Laguna Niguel’s innovative programs, including EngageVR®, Extraordinary Outings, Gourmet Bites Cuisine, Pantry Program, Thriving Through Music, and Watermark University, empower residents to thrive across all aspects of life: mind, body, spirit, and community.
It All Begins With Our Nayas
Named after the ancient Sanskrit word for “guide,” these exceptional caregivers pour their hearts into connecting with each resident and finding meaningful ways to help them to live life to the fullest. Nayas receive specialized training in the latest methods for supporting those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia (their advanced training is recognized by the Alzheimer’s Association).
Leading with expertise and empathy, Nayas provide more than expert care. They are the people who make our innovative programs come alive. They help residents and their loved ones discover new ways to connect and grow while inspiring confidence and peace of mind.
One of Watermark’s Nayas explains, “Being a Naya is not about just being a caregiver. The residents and their loved ones see us like their family.”
You’re Not Alone in This Journey
As you and your loved one cope with memory loss or dementia, take time to acknowledge your emotions and give yourself some grace. Call 949561-3740 to learn more, and find valuable information and resources on our website at WatermarkLagunaNiguel.com/support.
Classy Closets’ unique, custom solutions for the home and office can instantly double or even triple your storage space.
Closet organization is something of an oxymoron at my house. Same goes for my home office. I actually do know where everything is in the stacks of paper that perpetually reside atop my desk, but good luck having anyone else make rhyme or reason of my filing “system.”
I’m clearly a candidate for the handiwork of a company like Classy Closets – if it’s a matter of function or simply
a desire to have your mess aesthetically addressed, Classy Closets will customize your work/life space with made-toorder cabinetry and organization systems for your home office, garage, bedroom, laundry room, pantry, media centers, wallbeds and more.
Think you can’t afford to bring in the professionals? Classy Closets, which has served all of Orange County and
San Diego since 2003, offers organization options for virtually every budget – from basic white melanine to solid wood cabinetry.
“Nothing we do is cookie cutter,” says Company CFO Gary Pavitt. “Although Classy Closets is a franchise, we’re not governed by the rules that typically dictate processes of typical franchise operations – particularly with regard to the materials and mounting systems we use. What works in terms of style and function at a home in Tucson, for instance, wouldn’t necessarily translate to a house in Huntington Beach. So we have the freedom to customize our work to our client’s specific needs and desires.”
Another differentiator is that Gary and his team manufacture their products right here in Southern California, which affords them the ability to offer their clients a broader range of product options at a level of quality that is “second to none.” And because they are “hands-on” from design consultation to manufacture and installation, Gary and his staff pride themselves on providing unparalleled customer service.
“What’s really fun is having the ability to create the products in-house,” says Gary. “I really enjoy introducing new ways to make things better, bringing in new products and keeping up with the latest trends in the industry. We go out of our way to keep our customers satisfied … that’s what makes it all worthwhile. As in any business, your customers are golden and we’ve been very fortunate that a large percentage of our business is in referrals.”
Repeat customers Marta and Mike Fowler of San Diego say that Classy
Closets is a “dream company - one that not only delivers beautiful craftsmanship, but also that elusive quality of excellent service. Every good cliché regarding their work applies.”
“This is our second home that Classy Closets has refined to meet all our storage needs, from closets to garage, from bathroom storage to entertainment center. And they never try to oversell, giving honest recommendations for products, charging fair prices within reach,” says Marta. “Their creative solutions and impeccable workmanship combine to make functional pieces we love living with. We have only one warning: Classy Closets is addictive, and you will find yourself wanting to spread the good news.”
In a letter to Gary’s business partner Kate Monaghan, Carlsbad-based Interior Designer Karen Wirrig echoes the Fowler’s sentiment and adds that “my new master closet is beautiful and your attention to detail is evident. I also want to commend your installation crew. They were on time, tidy, polite, and did excellent work … I will wholeheartedly recommend your company to all my clients. It has been a pleasure to work with you all.”

Curb Appeal on a Budget:
How to Make Your Neighbors Wonder If You Won the Lottery
By Alex Keuylian, Owner of Steamatic of Orange County
Let’s face it—we all judge houses from the curb. Whether you’re walking the dog, hosting an open house, or just trying to make your mother-in-law raise her eyebrows in approval, first impressions matter.
But here’s the good news: boosting your home’s curb appeal doesn’t have to mean draining your savings or pretending you’re on a reality renovation show. With a few inexpensive changes, you can make your house the star of the block—and maybe even bump up its value in the process.
Why Curb Appeal Matters
Think of curb appeal as your home’s handshake. If it’s strong and confident (with a good paint job and trimmed hedges), people take notice. If it’s weak and sweaty (peeling paint and an overgrown jungle), well…let’s just say it’s harder to bounce back from a bad first impression.
In fact, real estate studies have shown that homes with strong curb appeal can sell for up to 10% more than similar homes with “meh” exteriors. That’s potentially thousands of dollars just for pulling weeds and painting the front door. Not a bad return on investment, right?
Simple and Affordable Ways to Boost Your Curb Appeal
1. Paint the Front Door
A gallon of paint costs around $30, and yet a bold, freshly-painted front
door can make your house look brand new. Go for something classic like navy, forest green, or even red (if you’re feeling bold and HOA-approved).
2. Clean Up the Yard
This might be free, depending on how willing you are to break a sweat. Mow the lawn, edge the driveway, trim the hedges, and pull those weeds that have been giving you side-eye for weeks.
strategically around the entryway. Bonus: flowers don’t complain if you forget to water them once in a while (they just wither quietly).
Curb Appeal Pays Off
Even if you’re not planning to sell your home tomorrow, increasing your curb appeal boosts your pride of ownership—and let’s be honest, it feels pretty great when someone walking by says, “Hey, your yard looks amazing.”
Plus, small outdoor upgrades show buyers (and appraisers) that a home has been well cared for, which can translate to real dollars when it’s time to sell or refinance.
When Curb Appeal Isn’t Just Skin-Deep
Of course, while sprucing up the outside makes a huge impact, sometimes the real issues are hiding just beneath the surface. If you’re dealing with musty smells, water stains, old fire damage, or something that looks suspiciously like mold creeping out of your vents—it might be time to call in the pros.
3. Swap Out House Numbers and Light Fixtures
Rusty porch light? Faded, outdated numbers? A quick hardware store run can help your entryway go from dated to polished faster than you can say “curb appeal.”
4. Get Your Driveway and Walkways Professionally Pressure Washed Dirt, grime, oil stains, mildew—all of it builds up over time and makes even a nice house look neglected. A professional pressure washing (yes, we do that!) can make your concrete, stone, siding, and walkways look fresh and new, without you lifting a finger or renting bulky equipment.
5. Add a Few Pops of Color
No need to channel your inner landscaper. Just grab a few potted plants or hanging baskets and place them

Coastal Shades
Discover Premium Designs and Tailored Solutions for Every Room
By Jody Robinson
In interviewing scores of entrepreneurs over the last 20+ years, I’ve learned that sometimes a business owners’ career trajectory is a straight line. For others, finding their true calling might have taken a bit more of a circuitous route. But in virtually every instance, the most successful professionals are those who are passionate about what they do. So much so that their daily responsibilities don’t feel much like work at all.
Such is the case for Cesar Jimenez and his wife, Adria, who initially followed a different path before finding their shared passion for the home improvement industry. Today they own and operate a number of local businesses, including the San Clemente-based Coastal Shades, which specializes in motorized window coverings, blinds, interior and exterior shades, shutters and drapery.
“My previous career had me traveling all over the country selling hardware and software for a telematics company,” says Cesar. “After years of living the traveling-salesman life and missing out on a lot of time with my wife and daughters, I decided to look into other career options.”
Sitting on a park bench on a family vacation in Colorado, watching his kids ice skate, Cesar’s wife turned to him and asked why not start a business there? The very same day they started the search, they found a gentleman selling his window coverings company. When one door closes, a window opens, but not many blow open quite so quickly following the decision to make a life change. They immediately began the purchasing process, and a few short months later moved to the Centennial State to watch their new business flourish.
When deciding to relocate to San Clemente to be closer to his wife’s family, the couple were excited for the opportunity to “be a part of the community for which we have such fond memories.”
Although new to the area, Cesar and Adria bring years of experience to Coastal Shades, the sister company of North County Blinds, a respected name in the window-covering industry in San Diego since 1985.
“Continuing the legacy of excellence set forth by North County Blinds, Coastal Shades brings decades of experience, knowledge, and expertise to every project we undertake,” says Cesar. “Our team of highly skilled professionals are passionate about creating stunning window treatments that perfectly complement any space.”
The hallmarks of Coastal Shades’ service includes top-quality craftsmanship, personalized attention to detail, and a steadfast dedication to ensuring that every customer’s vision is brought to life.
“We take pride in offering a wide range of design options, utilizing the latest materials and technologies to provide our clients with the best solutions for their unique needs,” says Cesar. “Our goal is to make your buying process as simple as possible. And our specialty is offering a customized, bespoke experience where we eliminate the headache. That’s it.” Sounds like a worthy goal to pursue after all.

Break Through the Clutter! Ways to Spring Clean Your Financial House
Provided by Ken Earwood
When was the last time you spring cleaned your house? Many of us do some form of spring cleaning in our homes regularly. But what about our financial “homes”?
It can be easy to forget about the clutter and red tape that builds up in our finances. When we do, we can end up with some serious clutter. And that could lead to real consequences. In fact, it won’t just take up space. Clutter can also waste our energy, time, and even money. So, how can we deal with the financial clutter, so it doesn’t get in our way?
Let’s find out by checking out some simple and painless financial spring-cleaning tips.
PURGE THE PAPER
Go paperless for recurring bills and monthly financial statements. Also, go through the financial documents you have on hand and shred the old paperwork you don’t need any more. If there are papers you need to keep, make a digital version by scanning them.
Not sure what you need to keep? Consult with your financial professional to make the decision.
Pro Tip: Got a lot to paper? Let technology help you out! Apps can help you digitize and organize your paper records. Also, visit optoutprescreen.com to stop getting irritating mail solicitations, like credit card applications and loan preapprovals.
AUDIT YOUR SUBSCRIPTIONS
Review ALL of your subscriptions and cancel any you no longer use or need. That includes subscriptions for streaming services, software, magazines and newspapers, gaming, and even product deliveries.
Pro Tip: Use your credit card and bank statements to figure out all of your subscriptions, so you don’t overlook any. Also, consider signing up for subscriptions using the same card, so it’s easier to audit them in the future.
CONSOLIDATE ACCOUNTS
How many bank accounts, retirement accounts, and brokerage accounts do you have? Are they at different financial institutions? This type of account sprawl can get complicated fast. It can also mean paying lots of maintenance fees. Take a careful look at your accounts and try to consolidate them. Look at both reducing the number of accounts you have and consolidating your accounts at fewer institutions.
Pro Tip: Check out account fees and requirements as you decide which ones to keep versus shut down. And don’t forget to look at transfer fees too, especially if you’re moving money around to streamline your accounts. Consider asking a financial professional for advice to avoid unnecessary fees or inconvenient restrictions.
AUTOMATE SAVINGS
Set up regular transfers to a designated savings account. Choose a comfortable amount you can stick with. If you don’t know how much to set aside, start with a number you know you can commit to. And if you’re already doing this, check your automatic transfers and consider whether now’s a good time to adjust or increase them.
Pro Tip: If your savings account is already pretty healthy, consider rerouting your automatic deposits into a retirement account, college fund, or investment account. Also, consider earmarking chunks of cash you get, like annual tax refunds, for savings too.
BACK IT UP
Create backups of all of your important financial documents and account information. That means backing up digital files on another hard drive and backing up your backups by storing them in the cloud.
Pro Tip: Create a “master” file as a “key” to explain how your backups are organized and where to find what information. You can also organize financial access passwords with a secure password manager. This reorganization can help you out with your next financial spring cleaning. This can also give you a head start on estate planning, allowing an estate executor to access all of your digital assets and information.
CHECK IN WITH YOUR BIGGER FINANCIAL GOALS
How are you doing on your financial goals, big and small? What progress have you made and where are you falling short? Reviewing where you’re at. How far you’ve come, and where you want to be can help you figure out when and how to adjust course, so you stay on track.
Pro Tip: Turn this step into a conversation so you can get feedback and a fresh perspective. Talking about your bigger financial goals can motivate you to stick with them.
The Proof is in the Paint with ONE WAY PAINTING
By Jody Robinson
Photography of Jeff McCabe by Lana Farfan, Caught in the Moment Photography
Ralph Waldo Emerson famously said “who you are speaks so loudly I cannot hear what you’re saying.” Keeping this quote in mind has served me well over the years, particularly in choosing friends … and when seeking out the services of professionals. In my opinion, integrity isn’t a word heard often enough in the business world. Competitive, certainly.
But unfortunately phrases like “bottom-line oriented,” “unscrupulous,” even “cutthroat” have cropped up in the vernacular when hearing home improvement gone wrong stories from fellow homeowners. That’s why it was so refreshing to come across Jeff McCabe and his Orange County-based One Way Painting.
In business since 1976, Jeff and his team serve all of the OC and specialize in interior and exterior residential and commercial painting. They swear by the rules of professionalism: “no cutting corners. No cheap materials. We pay attention to every detail, and never call a job complete until the customer is completely satisfied.”
Some might call it good Christian values. Others might say it’s simply good
business. But for the last 42 years, working from the heart has earned One Way Painting such a respected reputation in the industry that the vast majority of their work comes through repeat customers or referrals from repeat customers. The company’s success isn’t merely rooted in customer service though. Boasting a superior knowledge of available product on the market and hiring the most profes sional crews in the business also goes a long way.
“Our reputation speaks for itself; but if it didn’t, we have 16 satisfied employees on our permanent payroll who would put a hand up in
defense of the standards we set,” says Jeff. Standards which were born and bred through a commitment to ethical business practices and hard work. In 2001, Jeff teamed up with seasoned professional Ron Bartz as a journeyman, then took over the company when Ron retired, and has been growing it ever since.
In 2009, Jeff took the pair of threeman crews and expanded the operation to encompass six crews, two office staff, and a project manager who oversees jobs, right alongside the man with the plan himself. “We currently have four trucks on the road and I’d like a full fleet someday. I’d like to leave a legacy for my daughters, and that means more than just cans of paint and a warehouse full of equipment and materials.”
To Jeff, it means taking care of his employees, taking care of his family: taking care of business. The hope is that One Way Painting becomes a household name, for its quality of work and quality of values.
My husband and I can happily attest to both. When we moved into our home in San Juan Capistrano five years ago, we acquired quotes for exterior painting from several contractors, but were particularly impressed with Jeff and his crew. Prior to starting work at our home, Jeff came by in person to go over what the job would entail and answered all of our questions. His team showed up right on time the first day - and each subsequent day - and at the end of each day everything was cleaned up before they left.
process and followed up immediately upon completion of the job to ensure that we were satisfied with the results and our overall experience of working with One Way Painting).
Their attention to detail is found from start to finish. For exterior projects, they begin by power washing to clean and remove any loose paint, mildew or mold. Then the patching: with stucco, trenching around the foundations and priming with an acrylic. They’ll treat your wood siding, eaves, fascia,
“We pride ourselves on working with a team of long-term employees - we do not hire off the street,” says Jeff. “We guarantee our work and do not require payment till the job is completed and the customer is completely pleased with our work.”
Jeff and his crew delivered on these promises and more than exceeded our expectations - the result was outstanding work, a job completed on time and on budget and defined by unparalleled customer service (Kelly in his office was hyper-responsive to our inquiries during the estimating
windows. Main doors, garage doors, trim. Even wrought iron, or other specialty surfaces like patio covers and fences. Most work depends on the client’s preference: flat to semi-gloss, acrylic or oil finish. Inside walls see flat, matte, eggshell, satin, semi, or hi-gloss. If you have natural wood cabinets and they need refinishing, One Way’s crew will see to it that they look new again. Also licensed and bonded as commercial painters, Jeff’s crew has been making businesses and their buildings look new again for 42 years. With a free on-site estimate, your custom needs are sure to have a custom solution. No deposits required, and “no surprises along the way,” Jeff is quick to add.
“I think at the end of the day what sets us apart is taking our time with each and every customer that comes our way,” says Jeff. “We run a business like every person we interact with is family.” They may not be the cheapest out there, but then that wouldn’t fly in Emerson’s eyes, and not in Jeff’s either. “Our business is based on the Christian ethic of treating every customer with honesty and integrity. Every job is done ‘as unto the Lord.’ Does this mean we’re perfect? No. It does mean that we strive to do the best painting job possible.”

THE COACH HOUSE CONCERT HALL A MONUMENT TO MUSIC CELEBRATES ITS 45TH ANNVERSARY
The Legendary Coach House in San Juan Capistrano holds many records in the music universe, including its status as the oldest concert venue in the country owned by the same sole proprietor since its inception, hosting over 4.5 million guests.
Miles Davis, BB King, Bonnie Raitt, Ray Charles, Pat Benatar, Tom Jones, Johnny Cash, Sinead O’Connor, Dana Carvey and Jerrya Seinfeld are among the many legends that have performed on the club’s iconic stage.
MUSIC GEM
“There aren’t a lot of places that do what we do,” says Gary Folgner, owner of the Coach House. “There are probably only two or three left standing in the country.”
This year marks the 45th anniversary of the legendary, internationally celebrated entertainment landmark, THE COACH HOUSE. The owner, Gary Folgner, at 84 years old, is still very "hands on" with the daily operations of this storied palace of music. No one has written a book yet, but they should!
Aside from the furthest seat from the stage being 40 feet away, one of the things that makes the Coach House unique is that you never know who is going to sit in. During a recent concert with Ian Hunter & the Rant Band, they were joined on stage by a guitar playing Johnny Depp. Concert goers were amazed to see the movie star performing right in front of them while they wined and dined.
For up-and-coming performers, as well as rugged veterans of music, and nationally recognized tribute acts, The Coach House has been a launch pad that continues outlasting almost all its competitors from coast
to coast. The Coach House opens its doors to host genres from Country, Rock 'n' Roll, Jazz, Americana and Blues to R&B, Soul, Progressive Rock and everything else in between.
SURVIVING
“That’s part of what’s hard about this business; you’ve got new bands coming up, and if you don’t try them or use them, you don’t have new music,” founder Folgner continues. “That’s why sometimes you come in and you see a show, and it’s only got a hundred people; that’s probably because the band is new. But if you don’t try the new groups, you won’t have new groups for the future.”
For its 45th anniversary, The Coach House is planning a Celebratory Concert Series and a “Main Event” show, showcasing Don McLean (June 14), whose songwriting, including “American Pie,” has left an indelible mark on music history and the legendary Wayne Newton (October 3), known for

Q Does white really go with fish/seafood and red with red meat or is there some overlap?
A When in doubt the white with seafood and red with red meat is a good rule. But of course, there’s definitely some overlap here when getting into the details. There are some fantastic lighter bodied red wines out there that can easily be paired with fish and other seafoods. Some of my favorites are Pinot Noir, Beaujolais, and Grenache, each of them have a light body with very light tannins, won’t overpower the delicate fish. And for red meats you can easily pour a full bodied white wine that has high acidity, think California Chardonnays, white Rhone blends, Rieslings and Chenin Blancs. All of these have nice body that can stand up to high fat red meats, and nice acidity that can shine through some of the more robust seasonings and marinades that are used to cook them.
Q Does the shape/size of the wine glass make a difference?
A This is one of those topics that I wish people took more seriously! In short, yes, the shape and size of the glass makes a huge difference! Wine glasses are designed with very specific shapes and sizes to help deliver wine aromas to your nose. If search “red wine glass” and “white wine glass” you’ll notice red wine glasses are much bigger and more bowl shaped, that’s because there are vapors coming off the wine as the alcohol slowly evaporates, those vapors are filled with compounds that help you taste the wine. White wines a typically chilled and won’t give off as much aromas, therefore the glass doesn’t need to be as large. Another reason for the smaller shape for whites is they don’t need need to aerate like reds do, less surface area reduces aeration and keeps the wine cooler. Reds on the other hand love to aerate and
therefore need all the surface area to slowly oxidize (in a good way). The bowl-shaped narrower opening at the top of the glass does two things that are both very important: 1) It helps trap the aromas into a smaller area to help you small them. Think about how much more difficult it would be to smell wine in a cereal bowl with an 8 inch opening than a wine glass with a 2 inch opening. 2) It helps keep the wine in the glass when you swirl the heck out of it, which you should do! I love swirling wine, it introduces oxygen (good oxidation) into the wine and gets all those great aromas swirling around the glass for you to smell!
Q Should I decant wine before I drink it?
A good sommelier is a helper, a guide to finding the best wine for your food and experience. For this month’s installment, we again approached South County-based sommelier Micah Sampson for a bit of education about the wine/food pairings, whether the size and shape of the glass makes a difference and whether wine should be decanted before its served. Micah is happy to connect personally His cell is (562) 241-1699 or Micah@SampsonFamilyWines.com SommStash.com
A Decanting can do wonders for your wine, but it isn’t always necessary. You should have a nice decanter at home if you’re serious about enjoying some great red wines (don’t worry about decanting white wines), and that decanter should have a nice wide bottom that creates a ton of surface area when the wine is poured in, and a narrow top that keeps too much air from getting introduced and makes it easy to pour a glass. The types of red wines you’re decanting are usually full bodied reds that usually have a some age on them (like 5-10+ years), not those cheap red blends you’re buying for $8.99 at the market. The idea behind decanting is you’re introducing oxygen into the wine and a chemical change is happening, a lot of those volatile compounds (bad aromas) are evaporating off and the harsher tannins are softening up a bit, which allows you to enjoy the wine more. So, if you have a 2010 Barolo or a 2015 Napa Cabernet, let those bad boys decant for 30-60 minutes, maybe take some small sips and smells during that time so you can see how the wine changes.

“In today’s society, there is no shortage of individuals who have become the victims of a system that rips all hope from them by telling them they are incapable of achieving a better life - that their injuries and/or conditions are merely something they will have to live with the rest of their lives. The First to Fight provides accessible in-home intra and post-rehabilitative services to clients by incorporating adaptive strength training, neuromuscular retraining, mobility and balance work, and strength and conditioning, to help improve individual outcomes even after conventional services have come to an end.

It’s a remarkable feeling when you can find someone to take your side. In relationships, sports: you name it. That one person who believes in you, makes you better, fights alongside you.
Michael Cefali matched with his person (his wife Courtney) long before law school - but their partnership extended through the long years studying for the bar and paid off in an even match that has stacked up in their favor many times over. Graduates of Chapman Law and California Western, respectively, they started the San Juan Capistrano-based Cefali & Cefali, APC in July of 2019 and have been fighting for the little guy ever since. From setting clients up with top-tier doctors and specialists, to negotiating stellar settlements, Cefali & Cefali, APC handles cases from start to finish with client health as their top priority.
Focusing on all aspects of personal injury, the Cefalis are what you might expect in such a ring: passionate, aggressive, and most importantly, honest - all traits that have contributed to the couple having recovered millions of dollars per year on behalf of their clients since opening their firm.
“The insurance companies would like you to think that they get to determine the value of your injuries, your suffering,” says Michael. “We’ll fight for every last penny because we know that you deserve it.” Clients appreciate the work that the Cefalis do. In fact, as of the date of this publication, you won’t find a single negative review of their firm anywhere on the internet.
Client Jamie shares, “I am so grateful for everything that Mike Cefali and his team did for me! Not only was he able to help me get what I was owed in my settlement and then some, but he was so responsive and kind and it was very apparent that he cared about me and my case! He and his team are so HONEST and FAIR and it was clear from start
Michael and Courtney Cefali
to finish that he had my best interest in mind! Not only is he a good lawyer but he is a good person which made a world of difference for me. I could not have asked for a better experience with a personal injury attorney! I have already recommended him to all of my friends and I will continue to recommended him to anyone looking for a good lawyer! Thank you so much Cefali and Cefali!”
Another client Carrie echoes Jamie’s sentiment, “My husband and I were rear-ended on the freeway. We felt bad thinking of contacting a lawyer, but after several months of continuous pain and medical treatments, a friend recommended Michael Cefali. From the beginning, he lived up to his core values of integrity, loyalty, and vigorous advocacy. Michael is a dedicated, friendly, and competent attorney who seamlessly represented our interests and ensured the outcome was in our favor. He treated us not like a client, but like family; he was there any time we needed him. He was empathetic to our situation and worked tirelessly with all parties to represent us. We don’t trust many people, but we trust Michael and his team and would highly recommend him to anyone seeking a professional, effective, and focused attorney.”
With five staff members to back up the stellar work Michael and Courtney produce, the couple remain incredibly hands on, based on a culture of empathy, integrity and advocacy.
“We craft each case personally, build each one for trial, and remain accessible to clients,” says Michael. “Personal injury attorneys get a bad rap when really we’re the good guys. I like to think of our firm as a pirate ship. Nimble, clever, and tenacious in spite of being outspent by the adversary, we pry money from greedy insurance companies and give it to our very deserving clients.”
Giving back is the spirit of the firm, and community work creates a direct link between Michael, Courtney, and their circle in San Juan Capistrano. The couple and their team proudly supports a number of local charitable and community organizations including: The Boys and Girls Club of Capistrano Valley (Courtney is on the Board of Directors), The San Juan Capistrano Friends of the Library (Courtney is also a board member), CREER, the Pacific Marine Mammal Foundation, and Project Coyote. Michael is a member of the San Juan Capistrano Rotary Club and has been recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow.
The Cefali team’s ethics, constant communication (every client is given Michael’s personal cell phone for easy accessibility), commitment to their clients and involvement in the community keeps everyone growing stronger and healthier together. Remarkable isn’t it, that feeling when someone takes your side?
Medicare eligibility begins at age 65, regardless of employment status. The Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) spans seven months, starting three months before the month you turn 65, including your birthday month, and ending three months after. During this period, you can sign up for Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance).
Medicare Part A is typically premium-free for most individuals, so delaying enrollment in Part A is uncommon. However, delaying Medicare Part B—which comes with a monthly premium—can be a good option for those who have existing health coverage through an employer or a spouse’s employer.
If you are still working and covered by an employer-sponsored health plan, or if you are covered under a spouse’s employer health plan (20 or more employees), you might decide to delay enrolling in Medicare Part B. Considerations that come into play here are:
1. Is your spouse younger and relies on your group health insurance for affordable coverage.
2. If you’re still working and your income is higher than the base AGI for the current year base Part B premium, which means you’ll pay more for Medicare Part B and Part D, and if so, will it make the Medicare option more expensive than your employer group option.
Delaying enrollment in Medicare Part B without qualifying for a SEP can lead to significant financial consequence:
A Late Enrollment Penalty: You may face a late enrollment penalty that increases your Part B premium by 10% for each full 12-month period you were eligible for Part B but did not enroll. This penalty typically lasts for as long as you have Part B coverage.
There is also a Late Enrollment Penalty for not having Medicare Part D credible coverage. Medicare calculates the penalty by multiplying 1% of the national base beneficiary premium for a Medicare Part D plan by the number of full uncovered months you went without Part D or other credible coverage. This is a lifelong Late Enrollment Penalty just like Medicare Part B.
Staying Independent Longer: When Is the Right Time to Transition to Senior Living?
For many older adults, maintaining independence is a top priority. The idea of leaving home for a senior living community can feel overwhelming or unnecessary.
However, planning ahead and recognizing when extra support is needed can help ensure a higher quality of life and greater long-term independence.
So, how do you know when it’s the right time to transition? Here’s what to consider.
Maximizing Independence at Home
Many seniors successfully age in place for years by making small adjustments to their home and lifestyle. Some ways to extend independence include:
✅ Home Modifications – Installing grab bars, non-slip flooring, and better lighting can reduce fall risks.
✅ In-Home Support – Hiring caregivers or using meal delivery and transportation services can help manage daily needs.
✅ Staying Active and Engaged –Regular exercise and socialization help maintain physical and mental health.
Despite these efforts, there may come a time when staying at home becomes more challenging or even unsafe. That’s when considering a move to a senior living community can be a proactive step toward maintaining freedom and well-being.
Signs It May Be Time to Consider Senior Living
It’s not always easy to recognize when a transition is necessary. Some key indicators include:
Increased Safety Concerns – Frequent falls, forgetfulness with medications, or difficulty navigating the home can put seniors at risk.
Declining
Physical or Cognitive Health – Memory issues, difficulty managing daily tasks, or worsening chronic conditions may indicate a need for additional care.
Social Isolation – Loneliness can lead to depression, while senior living offers built-in opportunities for connection and engagement.
Caregiver Burnout – Family members providing care may feel overwhelmed, signaling that outside support is needed.
Ignoring these signs can lead to emergencies that force a rushed decision. Being proactive allows seniors and their families to choose a community on their terms, ensuring a smooth and comfortable transition.
Why Senior Living Can Extend Independence
Many seniors worry that moving into a community means losing their freedom. However, the reality is that senior living often enhances independence by providing:
✅ The Right Level of Support – Assistance with daily activities when needed, while still encouraging self-sufficiency.
✅ Maintenance-Free Living – No more worrying about home repairs, yard work, or household chores.
✅ Health and Wellness Programs
– Access to fitness classes, nutritious meals, and medical support to maintain well-being.
✅ Social Opportunities – Activities, events, and communal dining help prevent isolation and promote engagement.
Rather than waiting until a crisis occurs, exploring options early allows seniors to choose a living arrangement that supports their lifestyle and personal goals.

Delaying Enrollment in Medicare at Age 65
Many individuals face the decision of whether to enroll in Medicare upon reaching the age of 65. While automatic enrollment occurs for those already receiving Social Security benefits, others may wonder if they can, or should, delay Medicare enrollment.
Medicare Part A is typically premiumfree for most individuals, so delaying enrollment in Part A is uncommon. However, delaying Medicare Part B—which comes with a monthly premium—can be a good option for
those who have existing health coverage through an employer or a spouse’s employer.
2. If you’re still working and your income is higher than the base AGI for the current year base Part B
premium, which means you’ll pay more for Medicare Part B and Part D, and if so, will it make the Medicare option more expensive than your employer group option.
For these reasons if you delay full enrollment in Medicare, which means not activating Part B, go ahead and get Part A and your Medicare number established (this makes the fully going onto Medicare with Part B process much easier), then qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) when your coverage ends, (you can end it yourself or it can come from the loss of your job providing that coverage) The SEP (Special Election Period) allows you to enroll in Part B without incurring late enrollment penalties. Do NOT opt for COBRA for more than 63 days if you’re age 65 or older, currently it will not be considered group health insurance and you will end up in the Medicare Part B LEP (Late Enrollment Penalty) scenario.

Local Christian School Teaches History “The Old-Fashioned Way”
Nicholas Knights, Levi Harris, Frankie Rhodas, Nathan Powellposing in front of the Washington Monument
The halls of history became a living classroom for an eager group of 8th graders from Saint Michael’s Christian Academy in January, as they traded the sunny shores of San Clemente for the storied streets of Washington, D.C. on an adventure that transformed textbook knowledge into unforgettable memories.
This week-long expedition, guided by the school’s principal and history teacher, immersed students in America’s heritage. They walked the marble halls of the Capitol, stood before the original Constitution, and witnessed firsthand the monuments that define our republic.
“Seeing it (Washington D.C.) is way different than just reading about it.”, says Hannah Powell, History teacher & trip chaperone. She adds, “8th grade history focuses a lot on our government and how it works, so getting to see where those things happened and are happening, enhances understanding.”
For many young travelers, this marked their first venture to the East Coast – a world away from Southern California. Students were captivated by the contrast: crisp air replacing ocean breezes, centuries-old architecture instead of modern developments, and the capital’s energetic pulse compared to San Clemente’s coastal tranquility.
Each student discovered personal connections to history – from the National Cathedral’s magnificent stained glass to the first ladies’ iconic dresses at the American History Museum. The rovers at the Air & Space Museum and ancient skeletons at The Smithsonian sparked wonder and curiosity.
A very important part of the itinerary was a visit to the Arlington National Cemetery, which is the largest National Cemetery in the US, with over 400,000 marble markers. Many of the parents, including the dean, Fr. Lewis Powell, are US veterans, making this a very special stop on their trip. In fact, two of the students, Levi Harris and Nicholas Knights, were selected to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a profound moment for all of the students. Levi Harris reflects, “...my key takeaway from the trip was…I appreciate our military a lot more now, just seeing how much they have had to fight for us and how many people have given up their lives…”
Students embraced hard work before the trip, writing community appeal letters and mowing lawns to raise funds. These lessons in dedication proved as valuable as any history lecture, with students unanimously agreeing that every effort was worthwhile.
Beyond the educational benefits, the trip is also about building lasting memories and fostering a sense of community among students. Spending a week together in a new environment encourages teamwork, communication, and friendship.
At Saint Michael’s Christian Academy, education extends beyond textbooks – from walking trips to local shops to cross-country explorations. This immersive learning approach distinguishes the school, preparing students not just academically but as engaged citizens.
Finally, the students highly recommend “We The Pizza” as an essential Washington D.C. stop – a unanimous five-star endorsement from our young travelers!

Absolutely Fabulous
By Jody Robinson
Years ago, a friend had a birthday and her family threw her a surprise party. This is a woman I've always had the hardest time shopping for - she leans toward unique, one-of-a-kind items and decor and her tastes are always a little eclectic and a lot of fun. I called a mutual friend for some ideas and she told me something I haven’t forgotten to this day: there are two types of presents. One that means something to the receiver because it reflects what they love. The other means something to them because it reflects what you love.
Surf City’s Most Unique Gifts & Décor Boutique
might have passed over, or never looked for in the first place.
Eighteen years ago, Diane Silverstein walked into an impulse buy like no other. (i.e. not your regular gift purchase) She came home with the deed to a retail space that would be- come Absolutely Fabulous - a supremely unique gift and decor destination that has evolved into a Surf City staple that folks from every corner of Orange County Flock to for every milestone that calls for an extra special gift.
Her eye for curating the most incredible selection of home accent offerings and unique gifts make it easy to find the perfect item without making a million stops or needlessly scouring the vast black hole of the internet. To surprise others with such a selection, you have to have a specific passion for hunting down curious items others
The variety and uniqueness of products at Absolutely Fabulous is astounding: hand-made jewelry, Miche Bag purses (the ones where you just drop the “insides” of your into a new shell, rather than having to dump all of your stuff out!), $10 silk scarves, old-school shaving kits for men, a “Daddy’s Tool Bag” that includes diaper changing equipment, and instructional DVD, face mask and other funny items, rare paintings by successful artists, large crystal chandeliers, crystal perfume bottles, stuffed animal baby bottle covers, piggy banks for kids, “dorm survival kits” for new students, wedding party gifts, rare Disney art and collectibles, seasonal decor and gifts, Christmas decorations that range from very inexpensive bottle stoppers and tree decorations to 6-foot high collectible Santa dolls. Monaco Italian Kitchen + Bar
An Elevated, Modern Approach to Italian Cuisine
By Jody Robinson
Italian tops our family’s list of favored cuisine in part because there is generally something to appeal to each member’s diverse palate. My husband, Tim, is our resident meat eater and our daughter often opts for vegetarian dishes while our teenage son and I fancy ourselves fledgling foodies who lean more toward seafood specialties.
The same thought process applies when coordinating a dinner out with friends - it’s hard to go wrong with Italian fare, particularly when dining at an establishment that “honors Italy’s rich culinary heritage while embracing creativity and craftsmanship.”
Toward that end, the newly-opened Monaco Italian Kitchen + Bar provided the perfect venue for a friend’s recent birthday celebration - the service was excellent, attentive yet unobtrusive; the reimagined age-old Italian dishes were delicious; and 4,500 squarefoot indoor-outdoor space marries elegance with warmth, evoking the effortless charm of Italy’s dining culture.
Offering a fresh, modern take on Italian cuisine, Monaco Italian Kitchen
pays a heartfelt homage to Italy’s culinary traditions, reinterpreted through a modern lens. The team, having trained in Naples, brings authentic Neapolitan techniques to the table-most notably in their scratch-made doughs and wood-fired pizzas, specialty pastas, and fresh sauces. The menu showcases an assortment of staple and seasonally-inspired Neapolitan-style pizzas including the popular Diavola topped with San Marzano dop tomatoes, spicy Calabrese, smoked mozzarella and fresno peppers.
Beyond pizza, the restaurant’s Panuozzo Napoletano sandwiches-such as the Mortadella with pistachio pesto and bufala mozzarella, or the Chicken and Nduja with Provola and smoked mozzarella-offer a taste of old-world street food with a refined twist. The pasta
program is equally impressive, featuring dishes like saffron risotto, lamb bolognese, and delicate housemade cappelletti served in brodo. For mains, the slow-braised lamb shank and seared filet mignon with seasonal accents showcase the kitchen’s commitment to both comfort and sophistication.
Appetizers like grilled prawns and arancini set the stage for a memorable meal, while the bar program, curated by Jason Friedman, elevates the experience with standout cocktails. Highlights include an espresso martini made with a fresh-pulled shot and a blue cheese martini with house-brined olives. The wine list is thoughtfully curated, with a focus on Italian regional selections and approachable varietals for all palates. For those abstaining, the non-alcoholic menu is equally inventive and flavorful.
With its elevated cuisine, expertly crafted cocktails, and thoughtfully designed space, Monaco Kitchen + Bar delivers an experience that is at once familiar and refreshingly new. Whether you’re craving a wood-fired pizza, a perfectly executed pasta, or simply a stylish spot to unwind, Monaco Italian Kitchen is a destination worth discovering.
