Can Ketamine Help with Chronic Pain?

Let’s start with some foundations. Pain is not solely in your head; however, there are many factors in your brain that contribute to your pain that are not directly related to the painful source. This is where Ketamine can be helpful.

Chronic pain is defined as pain lasting for greater than 3 months and is associated with significant emotional distress and/or functional disability.

Over 20% of Americans suffer from chronic pain. However, the vast majority of patients who seek medical help for their pain have their treatments catered towards biomechanical sources (like an arthritic knee or herniated disc) instead of the multiple other factors that contribute to pain.

Chronic pain is much more than a biomechanical/inflammatory source of pain. In fact, studies have shown that if you take 100 healthy adults with no back pain and do an MRI of their lower back, about 30% of them will have severe disease noted on the MRI which would typically be associated with a painful condition. Furthermore, 20-40% of patients with chronic low back pain have no significant imaging findings on MRIs.

This is because chronic pain is a mixture of hyper-sensitized, easily irritated, peripheral (outside of the spinal cord) and central (spinal cord and brain) nerves. Furthermore, chronic pain results from central amplification, which is where the pain signals become heightened as they move towards the parts of the brain that process them, given the months or years of attention and focus to these signals. For example, if you are sitting down right now, it’s unlikely you are thinking about the touch signals com-

ing from the chair to your buttocks, your brain ignores these because you have learned over time these signals are not important. However, if you start to consciously or unconsciously perseverate over a specific painful sensation, your brain will start to devote more and more real estate to processing signals from that location. This is how central amplification occurs, and there are real neurobiological changes that happen because of this. Additionally, chronic pain is often accompanied with other mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD, and all of these can independently influence/amplify one’s perception of pain.

Unlike procedures, opioids, or anti-inflammatories which treat pain purely as something biomechanical, Ketamine acts to treat the actual root causes of chronic pain like those described above. Ketamine does so through its action on the NMDA receptor, triggering several critical downstream reactions that alter’s a patient’s reception and response to the pain. These reactions lead to something called “neuroplasticity,” the development of new neural connections that allows for different ways to process the pain. Infusions are typically done over a 10-14 day period, with 5 infusions stacked together to optimize this neuroplasticity and change the way the brain processes these pain signals. These neurobiological changes combined with an integrative psychotherapy program have been shown to treat many of the most difficult pain disorders including chronic back and neck pain, fibromyalgia, CRPS, trigeminal neuralgia, and neuropathic pain.

We have seen incredible results on patients with years of chronic pain. To learn more about this treatment for chronic pain visit our website at renewketamineinfusion.com

Dr. Hossein “Dr. J” Jahangiri

Southern California Family Dentistry

Idon’t really read studies. I’m not a search-Google-for-the-numbers person. But I can tell you one thing as a person who experiences anxiety about dental work, it can be difficult to weight out my desire for continued ‘A’ grades from my bi-annual checkups with the fact that there are a great many dental procedures that seem overwhelming and risky. That’s why it’s so important to find the right dental professional with whom to build a long-term dental healthcare relationship.

Oral health is more than just a pretty smile and comprehensive care encompassing different practice areas can be challenging to find under one roof – a hallmark that distinguishes Southern California Family Dentistry (SCFD) from others in the industry.

With almost 30 years of experience in dentistry, Dr. Hossein Jahangiri (“Dr. J” as his patients know him) and his team of highly skilled dentists, hygienists, assistants, and office managers take a patient-centric approach

to providing exceptional general, cosmetic, and restorative dental care for patients of all ages.

A member of the American Dental Association (ADA) and an associate fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID), Dr. J holds a doctorate from the University of Southern California (USC) and completed his dental residency at the Medical College of Georgia. He took over an existing dental practice in 2006 that has now been serving the local community for over 50 years and is among only 5% of all dentists to carry the license needed to provide IV conscious sedation with his own laboratory on site to ensure 100% control over case outcomes.

He and his team stay abreast of advancements in the field – both in terms of technology and continuing education. State-of-the-art dental technologies - diagnostic x-rays, CT scans and intraoral cameras - provide accurate and efficient diagnosis.

Maybe it’s because I’m getting older, but I’m paying a bit more attention to information on dental implants and “teeth in a day” procedures than I have in the past. So many questions come to mind. How do you know if you’re a good candidate? Is the procedure really done in just one day?

What are the benefits of dental implants versus dentures? How long do they last?

Because implant surgery is extremely technique-sensitive, an inexperi-

enced dentist may not fully comprehend certain aspects until he or she gains the necessary skills that comes with time and repeated practice. Having placed dental implants for over 20 years and the placement of 20 to 30 dental implants per month (versus three to five in a year like some providers), Dr. J’s practice checks my first box: Experience.

In terms of dentures vs. dental implants, Dr. J says removable dentures do not feel like real teeth because “they rest on top of the gums” so the majority of people who wear dentures must restrict their food intake. According to studies, complete dentures are only 20% as effective as natural teeth. “With dental implants, biting is significantly more effective, diminishing the potential for gastrointestinal issues.”

“The best scenario is for the dentist who will be making the teeth to decide where the implant will be placed so that a single person is accountable for the entire procedure from start to finish,” says Dr. J. This is what we do here at SCFD - the same dentist who places the implant(s) is also in charge of restoring the implant.

Dr. J adds that “the obvious benefit of dental implants is never having to go without teeth and completing the procedures in less time ensures you preserve the surrounding bone.” Anchored to it, these fittings are the final step in a process which begins with a dental consultation, diagnostic work up, x-rays, and extraction of any

8

remaining teeth. What used to take weeks however, can now be streamlined into a single appointment.

“Dental implants are extremely safe,” he says. “They have been around for

decades now and there have been no issues with biocompatibility or rejections due to allergic reactions. The only thing unsafe about implants is inexperience.

“Missing teeth can directly and indirectly contribute to many health problems. Patients with many missing teeth or no teeth, show poor dietary habits and nutritional intake, increased risk of hypertension, coronary artery diseases and osteoporosis. There’s also the obvious esthetic benefit of not being without teeth. However, having a healthy mouth and a full set of teeth is the greatest benefit that implants offer.”

There are a few questions that come from outlining that process - from a pain perspective, and also a practicality. When can I eat normally again? Will it be uncomfortable or irritating? Can I resume normal activities right away? The healing process typically takes about three to six months and primarily depends on the individual patient’s health and the quality of the bone that the implant is placed in.

“Dental implants can last just as long as natural teeth,” says Dr. J. “What

we do in implant dentistry is replace hopeless teeth, so if you take care of your implants the same way as your original teeth (that you lost), the results cannot be expected to be any better. However, if implants are taken care of properly, they can last as long as (if not longer than) teeth.”

The boxes all check. Not only for a regular dental cleaning and checkups, but for long-term healthcare that you can truly build at the top of the body and work your way down. Whether you need a routine cleaning or a more complex procedure such as dental implants, you

can trust that you are in the best of hands at Southern California Family Dentistry.

“Oral health impacts the whole body - and when we can get you smiling, we’re well on our way to restoring a critical piece of that puzzle.” I’d imagine there’s at least a single study to prove that out. Don’t take my word for it though, give Dr. J a call and see what might get you into (or back into!) the dentist’s chair.

The JOY OF TRAVELfrom the COVINGTON

Peggy Baker-Ryan and her husband Mike Ryan love to travel, and The Covington, an ECS independent senior living community in Aliso Viejo, makes it easy for them.

Peggy first moved to The Covington four and a half years ago and describes the community as “a hidden gem”. She had been living in Laguna Niguel but knew it was time to move. She was sure The Covington was the right place for her the first time she visited. “People were just so nice and welcoming,” she says. “They were asking me, ‘What can I do to help?’ It’s a great place to live and I’ve never looked back.”

Peggy says the residents have everything at The Covington. “There’s a focus on staying healthy, with fitness and nutritious food and good people to socialize with. I think people just live longer here,” she says.

Peggy married Mike Ryan, another resident of The Covington in February 2023, after both had lost their spouses. “We invited everyone to our wedding reception,” she says. “It was a great celebration.”

One of the interests Mike and Peggy share is a love of travel. The couple have been on four overseas trips, as well as a cruise to Alaska and have another planned for September. Mike has children in Boston and Colorado, and they have friends in Santa Barbara, so traveling locally, within the country or internationally is a large part of their lifestyle. “I tell people that we’re playing the back 9 and we need to play all the holes,” she laughs.

One of their recent trips was to the British Isles. Starting in London, they visited Belfast, Dublin, Scotland and the Shetland Islands. “I have friends in Belfast and Dublin, so we were able to catch up with them,” she says. But perhaps her most memorable experience was in Alaska, holding puppies that might grow up to be part of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

As they plan their next trip, Peggy cannot say enough about the peace and tranquility she feels living at The Covington. “A big factor in our travel is that there is no stress at home,” she says. “There’s no garden to worry about while we’re away and there’s someone taking care of your home. If there’s anything we want done while we’re gone, like having a room painted, they help with that too, so you come back to your home exactly how you want it,” she says.

It’s not just Peggy and her husband who love to travel at The Covington. “Others are traveling as well. One woman just went to Spain for a month with her son,” she says.

“Another woman put up a note asking if someone wanted to join her on a cruise.”

Peggy has seen, firsthand, how important it is to be able to take advantage of all that is offered at The Covington. “You don’t need to travel around the world. There are

day trips from the community, such as visiting Temecula Wine Country,” she says. “And The Covington plans excursions to local playhouses and other cultural centers.”

“Living here elevates your spirit. And when you are filled with spirit, you want to get up and go,” Peggy says.

Another resident enjoying the peace of mind of living at The Covington and traveling is Rosemary Zettler. This past spring, Rosemary flew to Italy to attend the wedding of her granddaughter. She is no stranger to travel, as she and her husband saw a lot of the world through his career opening up various international markets to airfreight service. She had visited Italy before, but never Tuscany, where the wedding took place.

Her flights had been booked for six months, but the one stressful area of trip planning was waiting for her passport to arrive. She started the passport renewal process months in advance, but time passed, and she had not received her passport. “I think everyone at The Covington was worried that my passport wouldn’t arrive on time,” she says. A few determined calls by her daughter seemed to shake loose any de-

lays and her passport arrived just two weeks before her departure. “Everyone was so pleased for me.”

She stayed in Trequanda, a town about 45 miles southeast of Florence. “Tuscany in the spring is a green paradise,” she says. Beyond the beautiful landscape, the town is home to a Michelin-rated restaurant. “I experienced a dinner that lasted two and a half hours,” she laughs. She also attended a lecture on olive oil, learning about the distinct differences in flavor. Rosemary traveled with her family to Florence as well, visiting the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, an important landmark in the city.

It was the wedding that brought her to Italy, so it was the wedding that captured her memories. A clothing and textile major in college, Rosemary has always sewn garments, but more recently has turned her talents to quilting. “I embroidered a blue heart on the hem of my granddaughter’s wedding dress,” she says, making the special day even more special.

Living here elevates your spirit, and when you are filled with spirit, you want to get up and go.

Rosemary also engineered the construction of a queen-size wedding quilt in which she asked 12 different family households to help her with the sewing together of the 195 blocks she had made. Thus, the newlyweds were wrapped up in the entire family’s love and support. In addition, she has crafted a wall hanging of silver champagne glasses to commemorate the wedding day. Both quilts will be on display at The Covington. With her talent, it’s no surprise that she made the beautiful blue dress she wore to the wedding in Italy. In addition, the guestbook sat atop a white tablecloth, which she also made. This tablecloth has been part of eight weddings in her family, so her sewing has inspired many family traditions.

Her time in Italy was a deeply memorable experience. “When I walked in the door of my home at The Covington and everything was there, waiting for me, well, it was a wonderful moment.”

Rosemary moved from Redondo Beach to the active retirement community in 2018. “Hands down, The Covington was the best choice,” she says. “Once we moved into The Covington, I knew it was the right decision,” she says, because she was surrounded by so many people going through the same experiences. And she was delighted by the wealth of activities. “Immediately I joined the landscape committee,” she says, which she later chaired. Rosemary is now part of the welcome committee, reaching out to those who are new to The Covington and helping them with the transition.

There’s so much to discover through travel, whether it’s to a nearby town, a neighboring state or a country waiting to be explored. Calling The Covington home means you’re free to travel as often as you’d like, knowing that when you walk through your front door, your well-maintained home and nearby friends are waiting for you.

KEEPING YOUR BRAIN HEALTHY AS YOU AGE

Taking care of your memory is vital as you age. I encourage all my senior patients to focus on their physical health to help stimulate their memory health.

Stay active.

Forms of dementia and Alzheimer’s are closely linked to heart health. High blood pressure and diabetes can create a decline in cognitive health and increased risk of dementia. To counter this, adults 65 years and older should try to get 30 minutes a day of light or moderate exercise. After exercise, people immediately feel a change in thinking and judgment.

Get your Zzzzs.

During sleep the brain clears out the build-up of harmful toxins, including beta-amyloid protein, associated with Alzheimer’s disease. When we don’t get enough sleep, this clearance process may not occur effectively. With insomnia being the most common sleep problem in adults who are 60 and older, here are some tips to help you get a good night’s sleep:

• Set a regular sleep schedule. Develop a routine that includes relaxation before going to bed.

• Avoid electronic back-lit devices such as tablets and cell phones before sleep. According to the Sleep Foundation, these devices produce blue light, which has been shown to decrease sleepiness and the amount of time you spend in slow-wave and rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep, both of which are important for cognitive functioning.

• Keep your bedroom at a comfortable temperature and try to avoid large meals before bedtime.

Exercise your brain.

Think of your brain as another important part of the body that needs regular exercise. Trying your hand at puzzles, card games or learning something new that interests you can have a positive effect on the brain.

If you feel you are experiencing signs of memory loss, it’s recommended that you meet with a physician to discuss your symptoms. While there is not one all-encompassing test to diagnose

Alzheimer’s disease, your physician can evaluate your medical history and symptoms and may refer you for additional testing. This may include neurological evaluations to assess your memory, problem-solving skills and reflexes; neuropsychological testing to assess your reasoning, language and thinking skills; and brain scans to check for possible signs of stroke, tumors, bleeding or a PET scan to assess brain function.

There is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, but there are medications to help hinder the progression of the disease. Cholinesterase inhibitors may be prescribed for mild to moderate symptoms. Cholinesterase inhibitors block the normal breakdown of acetylcholine, a type of chemical messenger that plays an important role in the central and peripheral nervous system.

How to care for a Loved One with Alzheimer’s

It is never easy to accept Alzheimer’s, whether it’s a friend, loved one, or just someone close. Although it has been around for a while, many of us are still uncertain as to the actual effects of the disease. Understanding the disease would help you to tailor your care for the individual and provide more effective, compassionate care.

Today, over 6 million people in the US, age 65 and over, live with some form of Alzheimer’s; approximately 70 percent are over the age of 75 and older. Alzheimer’s is a form of dementia, a neuro degenerative disease. Over time, the brain shrinks, and deterioration of brain

cells causes one to lose memory, first short-term, then long-term memory will follow. A person with Alzheimer’s often gets confused and disoriented, making it difficult to perform daily tasks. There is no cure, and the disease gets progressively worse over time. There are few medications to

help slow progression and minimize symptoms, but it is usually effective for mild cognitive symptoms and not for the advanced Alzheimer’s stage.

Preparing for what’s to come with Alzheimer’s can help individuals to live a more comfortable life that will ease challenges and frustrations when you can help them with recognition and memory abilities. Here are some steps you can take to help them.

• Create a memory album, filled with pictures, identifications, passages about each picture including time and dates, even momentum pieces.

• Create notes that you can stick to each common areas that they visit around the house as a reminder of what they should do.

• Regulate schedule. Routines will make it easier for them to remember and recognize what they need to do. Be sure to have ample time for tasks that will take longer since they will tend to take longer to complete.

• Create a safe home environment to prevent falls and accidents. Be sure to keep sharp, destructible, breakable, and fragile items away and out of reach. Reorganize your furniture and home if needed to make it safe for them. You may need to label rooms and create clear paths to common rooms like bedrooms, living rooms, dining areas, and bathrooms. Be sure to unplug small appliances after each use such as toaster ovens, hair dryers, etc. Clear areas of any cords, clutters, scattered rugs, and ensure floors are never slippery. Lock up medications, dangerous items, poisonous and toxic household supplies, alcohol, and other items that need to be kept safe. Install additional safety equipment such as smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, cameras, grab bars, railings and high-rise toilet seats.

• Involve them with simple tasks such as setting the table, dressing themselves, combing their own hair, putting lotion on themselves.

• Create mental and physical activities that are not too challenging.

18

It is proven that any activities will stimulate your brain and mobility. Simple activities can be playing memory games such as cards, word puzzles, and physical activities such as walking, stretching exercises.

• Simplify communication. Provide clear, concise short instructions, but engage them in meaningful conversations. Conversations may help trigger memories.

• Limit distractions. When there are too many activities within a room, it can create more confusion. Limiting the noise level will help them to focus better.

• Ensure that everything in the house is functioning well, such as the water running appropriately and the temperature of the water is not scalding hot, television is working properly, electric toothbrushes are in good condition. Remember Alzheimer’s individuals get frustrated easily.

• Create a support network. This would help you and provide support when you need help to care for them. It is also important to have back-ups in case you cannot follow-through with an activity or event. Consistency and continuity are important for them not to get off track and create confusion.

You need to have patience when assisting individuals with Alzheimer’s, but the care you provide, and the care you show will go a long way for them. Although they cannot always show their appreciation, they do appreciate the care and time you are giving them. Be alert, flexible, and accommodating! With you and the help of your family, friends, and support group, you will be able to provide the best care for your Alzheimer’s loved one or individual.

VIP Concierge Phlebotomy, Laboratory Directly To Your Door

Patience, kindness and true patient-centric healthcare from the comfort and convenience of Home? OC Labs delivers it all!

Orange County Labs, Inc. has been reinventing personalized patient care since 2014.

Recruited by LabCorp straight out of college in 1990, CEO, Bryan Muhlenbruch received extensive training and management experience at one of the nations largest medical laboratories, however he never wanted his patients at a draw station to feel like they were at a cattle call or just a number in-line.

After nearly twenty-four years of successful marketing management and oversight of four small regional labs, and transitioning them to LabCorp acquisitions, Bryan decided to go into business for himself. His goals, are to build on true patient-centered care and customizing the doctor’s individual or specific needs. Orange County Labs has proven to be your single source for all medical laboratory testing and home collections, located in Huntington Beach, CA, they come directly to your front door for your convenience.

“We are a full-service, high-complexity medical laboratory, specializing in custom and self-ordered blood draws,” says Bryan. “We of-

fer VIP Concierge in-home and at-business phlebotomy services, coming to you with our professionally trained staff to safely draw your blood or collect other sample types. Our test results come directly to your physician usually in 24 hours or less.”

OC Labs accepts all laboratory orders from any licensed healthcare provider. All orders are billed to PPO insurances directly, including Medicare, Medi-CAL, Cal Optima, Tricare and Humana Military. The collection and transportation fees are a covered benefit for the insured, so it’s at no cost to the patient. “Why wouldn’t you want in-home services, and be complete in only 10-15 minutes?”

Voted the #1 Medical Laboratory in Orange County, Orange County Labs performs a full range of blood, saliva, genetic, tissue, molecular and urine tests throughout Orange County. From early diagnosis to best treatment options, physicians count on Orange County Labs for fast, reliable and accurate results at a lower cost.

“We customize our approach to meet the needs of the people we serve,” says Bryan. “It just feels great to serve any patient who has been forced to adapt to a one-sizefits-all approach from the big national labs, ultimately saving time and hassle for the patient.”

As patients, we still have a choice of who we give our business to, including labs! Truly, Bryan says, “if you are dissatisfied with how things are being done when facing a blood draw for your physician, try our approach

of VIP Concierge Phlebotomy Services in the comfort of your home or office. I wish I could tell you just how much satisfaction and love our Phlebotomists get back from every one of our patients, who do not have to leave the comfort of their own homes.” “Building long-term relationships with our patients over the years, is what we enjoy the most!”

New Rules for Marketing Medicare Plans

Beginning September 30th, no longer will those annoying commercials selling Medicare Advantage plans be allowed to be so misleading. This crackdown comes following what the Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra calls “misleading marketing schemes by health insurance companies.”

These commercials to sell you on Medicare Advantage plans; an alternative to getting your Medicare benefits directly from the government along with a Medicare supplement and a Medicare drug plan, have gotten out of control. No longer will it be allowed for them to show a Medicare logo in a way that could make someone believe they are representing the federal government.

These Medicare Advantage plans have grown in popularity as an alternative to Original Medicare. Federal officials estimate that by the end of 2023 more than half of Medicare’s 65 million enrollees will be enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan. These plans can be either an HMO or a PPO and are offered by private insurance companies.

Medicare Advantage plans include the required Medicare prescription drug coverage and then add additional benefits that Original Medicare doesn’t cover such as an annual routine vision exam and eyewear allowance, routine hearing test and hearing aid benefit, over the counter health and wellness products, dental benefits and more. You can see why they are growing in popularity.

According to AARP, Becerra said the new rule “would prohibit overly general ads about the Medicare Advantage program that often tends to confuse and mislead eligible individuals.” The new regulation requires that an advertisement for Medicare Advantage specify the name of the plan, limits the use of the name Medicare and prohibits images of Medicare cards and the CMS logo (Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services.

How Can I Tell If I Have Skin Cancer?

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.

FLEMING DERMATOLOGY & AESTHETIC CENTER 23141 Moulton Parkway, Suite 110, Laguna Hills | (949) 916-5956
Dermatology

Kristy Fleming, MD, Double Board-Certified in
and Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery

Look especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.

WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW

1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.

2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life.

ACTINIC KERATOSIS

An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.

BASAL CELL CARCINOMA

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.

SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.

MELANOMA

Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.

3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling

A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?

B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?

C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?

D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.

E - Evolution: Has it changed?

F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others?

4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

The regulation requires that those on the other end of the 800 number that the individual is calling from first confirm if the plan is even offered in the area someone seeing the ad lives. If it is offered, then the regulations require a full explanation of coverage and that the call is recorded. A disclaimer specific to the service area of the individual’s county of residence must be included in the first minute of the phone call.

OF BUILDING MEANINGFUL RELATIONSHIPS

What really matters to you? You might have such thoughts as health, time, learning, experiences, love, faith, family and friends. We would mostly all agree, it’s the people in our lives and the relationships we foster that matter most. Relationships make our lives richer and more complete.

We spoke to Kyle Warner, coowner of Your Home Care Inc. about what they do, the benefits of home care and how important it is to build relationships with the people they serve

Q: Tell us a little bit about Your Home Care and what it is that you do.

A: At Your Home Care our mission is to enrich the quality of life of se-

niors by providing compassionate caregiving services in your home. The agency was created in 2003 and is family owned and operated. Our agency is licensed, insured and bonded, all our caregivers are vetted, trained and background checked. We service most all areas of Orange County CA with a concentration in Laguna Woods and surrounding cities. We work with all Long-Term Care Insurance plans.

Q: What types of services does home care typically cover?

A: We offer a wide range of home care services and customize a care plan for every client. These services include personal care related services such as bathing, dressing,

bathroom assistance and other personal hygiene needs. We prepare meals, provide transportation and help with housekeeping duties. Basically we help with all the activities of normal daily living seniors might need a hand with .

Companionship and social engagement is another key aspect of caregiving. Some of our seniors can feel isolated and lonely, a caregiver can be a friend to talk to. Seniors with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or Dementia can benefit greatly from a caregiver. Caregivers are experienced working with people with cognitive impairments. They are trained on the techniques used to manage behavior, keeping them safe and supervised.

26

Q: Can you share an example of a caregiver and client that worked well?

A: We had the pleasure of working with Paul, a Laguna Woods resident that was the primary caregiver for his brother Jim. Jim had a history of seizures and was dealing with some cognitive impairment. He was often disoriented and was apprehensive outside the house. As a result, Jim stayed mostly shut in, and that was challenging for Paul who needed a break.

After starting home care service, Paul unexpectedly wrote me a letter and said, “When I met with you, you had a particular caregiver in mind whom you thought would be a good match for my brother’s unique needs. To your credit, your recommendation of Chris proved to be an ideal match. Chris was very congenial, creative, and attentive to Jim’s needs in a way that made Jim feel very comfortable and safe. It proved that Jim can form new relationships outside of our family circle and could adapt to situations when outside my presence. This was a big breakthrough and I credit you and Chris for making this possible.”

Chris built a relationship with Jim. They became friends. They found common interests like classic rock and roll and playing pool.

Each case is unique and each client presents a unique opportunity for us to find ways to go above and beyond expectations. It could be preparing a special, home-cooked meal, going on a favorite outing, baking a birthday cake for the special day, playing cards, reminiscing, or simply being there to hold their hand.

Q: What makes Your home care stand out above the other home care agencies?

A: The senior home care industry is growing and changing. The

trend we are seeing is an increase in rates, add on fees and lengthy minimum hour requirements. At Your Home Care we don’t have lengthy minimum hour requirements, nor do we up-charge.

We make every effort to be as accommodating and flexible as possible to meet the needs of our clients. We are responsive and available to our clients and caregivers whenever they need us. We act quickly to address and resolve any issue or concern.

Going back to our mission, to provide compassionate home care services that enrich families lives, with this in mind we are always looking for ways we can exceed our clients expectations.

Your Home Care is a company with heart, we care about our clients, and we care about our employees. If you are considering home care for you or your loved one, you can call Kyle Warner directly at (949) 424-9322 and let us show you how much we care.

BUBBLES MOBILE AUTO DETAIL

There is a specific type of business person I particularly appreciate when utilizing his or her services. One who is detail oriented.

yan “Bubbles” Jara is just such a professional. Having been in mobile auto detail business serving Orange County for over 25 years, he must be, and especially since his specialty is restoration and paint correction on classic cars. Bubbles was the plan since the beginning, it seems.

“My uncles restore classic vehicles so I grew up in the industry," he says. "It only made sense to one day have a business of my own bringing cars back to their original glory.”

But what happens before a car becomes a classic? Those of us that pride ourselves on being detail oriented would perhaps note that a regular car wash and wax are in order. Ryan takes it one step further.

you, and handles all of the heavy lifting - from upholstery cleaning to paint protection.

Jara's services include hand wash and wax, interior and exterior detailing, headlight restoration, steam cleaning, ceramic coating, engine bay wash and ... something my minivan could certainly use ... pet hair removal. You name the vehicle, Bubbles will ensure it is looking its finest.

“Having a passion for the cars I’m servicing takes almost no effort - I know I love this work," he says. "The commitment to excellence and knowledge of the chemical industry gives your car its million-dollar shine.”

RV’s, motorcycles, daily drivers, trucks, boats and classic cars. The convenience is unmatched and the product? Well, it’s detailed. And you know I love nothing better.

Michigan Rattlers are a folk-rock band composed of Graham Young (guitar), Adam Reed (bass), Christian Wilder (piano), and Tony Audia (drums). Meeting as childhood friends, they began writing music and performing together in their hometown of Petoskey, Michigan. Their self-titled Michigan Rattlers EP attracted reviews from No Depression, Bluegrass Situation, B3 Science, and Rolling Stone, who named the band one of their “Ten New Country Artists You Need To Know” in 2016. They’ve continued to evolve beyond the “country” label ever since.

AUGUST 23RD

The Keef Richards are a Rock N’ Roll band, yes Rock n’ Roll… you know, good times, cocktails, shake yo’ booty to some wonderful music Rock n’ Roll. The band are bonafide veterans of the road and masters of mayhem that call Hollywood their home. They started a residency on Hollywood Blvd’s Bourbon Room last year and haven’t looked back. Gilby Clarke is the road captain, guitar and lead vocals who’s cache of cred’ was earned with Guns N Roses, Heart, MC5 & Nancy Sinatra.

SEPT. 1ST

BANG TANGO & ENUFF Z'NUFF

Bang tango was formed in 1988 by mark knight (guitars) and kyle kyle (bass). The additions of joe leste’ (vocals), kyle stevens (guitars), and tigg ketler (drums) completed the original lineup. One of the few hard rock groups in los angeles incorporating funk into their sound at the time, bang tango was immediately signed to mca/mechanic after releasing their first live record, 1989’s “live injection.” Released later that year, “psycho café” debuted to both critical and popular acclaim, solidifying the band as a hard rock presence to be reckoned with in a music scene dominated by the hair and glam metal of the time.

Fable & Spirit

Their third restaurant in the region for husband-and-wife team Darren and Jean Coyle, Fable & Spirit is the newest of their establishments to emerge on scene in Orange County (the couple also own Dublin 4 Gastropub and WineWorks for Everyone). Ideally situated in Newport Beach’s picturesque Lido Marina, Fable & Spirit features an incredible play-on of ‘farm-to-table’, as well as a nod to the heroes, queens, and goddesses of mythological Ireland.

With a menu curated by Executive Chef David Shofner, the sophisticated restaurant captures the high energy and neighborhood whimsy that captivates guests and makes strangers family by the end of the night.

Coyle’s dream for Fable & Spirit to “become that favorite neighborhood restaurant known for its imaginative, progressive and delicious fromscratch signature food and drink creations” has become a reality since opening its doors in 2019.

“When our guests pass through the Georgian gold-colored Dublin Door, they will be warmly welcomed and

introduced to some of the best of food, drink and good times that Orange County has to offer,” says Darren. “While our kitchen and bar take a serious approach to all things culinary and craft, we want to share the spirit and magic of our rich Irish heritage.”

With the Coyles’ upbringing straight from Dublin, Ireland, and a chef who graduated from Le Cordon Bleu at the California School of Culinary Arts in Pasadena, Fable & Spirit is the culmination of two careers to date: reflecting experience, style, and ultimately plated perfection.

Noshing on warm, fragrant Guinness brown bread served with European butter and clover honey offered an excellent opportunity to peruse the inventive menu. Popular starters include a delicious hamachi crudo and Hawaiian blue prawns for diners who lean toward seafood, while meat lovers will relish the mangalista pork belly paired with pearl couscous, cluster tomatoes and wild rocket.

Entrees range from seafood specialties (including Icelandic cod fish and chips and cracked pepper bucatini)

to dishes designed to please even the most discriminating meat eater’s palate. Of the latter, the 12-hour Kurobuta porchetta which arrives with polenta and enhanced with romanesco, Calabrian chili, chimichurri and smoked braising jus while the Australian rack of lamb is accompanied with wild mushroom risotto, carmelized onions, triple cream and cabernet reduction.

Ingredients are meticulously sourced and progressively modern, yet feature flavors and themes which are still familiar and comforting to their audience. Choose dishes straight from the wood-fired grill, or out of the rotisserie, always complimented by creative cocktails or innovative wine pairings, straight from the Coyle’s daughter Ali and son Drew, who serve as Director of Wines + Sommelier and Director of Spirits respectively. A family affair, to be sure: just like pre-1960’s Irish pubs. Either way, you’ll feel right at home. Third try continues the charm, at Fable & Spirit.

STANDOUT SHOW: CIRQUE DU SOLEIL’S MICHAEL JACKSON ONE

They thought ahead when they made Las Vegas a sparkling oasis in the middle of the Nevada desert. Since its founding as a city in 1905, Vegas has garnered international fame as the entertainment capital of the world. Not to be confused with Hollywood, California, Las Vegas is home to uncommon nightlife, glittering casinos, world-class entertainers, and a global leader in the hospitality industry. Or in layman’s terms, a really great place to get away for the weekend. See a show, bet on red, walk the Strip. An easy half day from LA or San Diego, Las Vegas is prime weekender territory: all you need is your sweetie, (and perhaps a pact to stay away from the Little White Chapel while you’re there.)

Among my favorite shows - the ones in residency at various resort properties along the strip and the ones that travel around the globe - is Cirque du Soleil. Over the years, I’ve had

the pleasure of attending several of the different “themed” extravaganzas - all of which originated with a small troupe of circus performers from Quebec that have evolved into a worldwide phenomena.

One of the most recent to emerge from this artistic revolution is Cirque du Soleil Michael Jackson One (in its permanent home inside Mandalay Bay) - a glitzy and glamorous visual production showcasing many of the inimitable artist’s hits.

There are very few artists I can’t resist dancing to. The King of Pop tops the list. Celebrating a decade on stage, this absolutely unbelievable show pays homage to the chart-topping hits of Michael Jackson. Many of the members of the creative team, including choreogra-

phers, worked with the man himself - and it shows in the incredible talent of each of the show’s dancers.

With new mixes and effects on multitrack masterpieces like Beat It, Billie Jean, Thriller, Black or White and more, you’re almost guaranteed chills as the music literally envelops the audience. I truly felt immersed in the world of song and dance that made Michael Jackson one of the most iconic figures of the 20th century.

With tickets starting as low as $69, seeing the story of four misfits who come to lovingly embody Jackson’s artistry and legacy is than a worthwhile spend. You’d have to be a Smooth Criminal to miss out.

Rare Society

Flagship OC upscale steakhouse opens in San Clemente

I was going to try and weave a little pun in about Rare Society’s inspiration coming from Las Vegas’ vintage upscale steakhouses, but the modern aesthetic and sustainably-sourced seafoods that complement Chef & Owner Brad Wise’s wood-fired grilling style for meats is impossible to make light of.

The new 5,500 square foot restaurant on San Clemente’s Avenida Del Mar - Rare Society’s flagship Orange County location - pays homage to the infamous retro steakhouses with an ambiance and culinary offerings that invoke the lore of Rat Pack gatherings and raucous Sinatra dinner parties. The gorgeous space features a classical Spanish take on California architecture with an over-the-top interior complete with arched motifs, brass finishes, and gilded opulence to spare.

Chef Wise serves his signature family-style Executive and Associate protein boards on custom-designed wood lazy Susan in order to effectively showcase the best cuts of dryaged ribeyes, Australian wagyu, classic filet mignon complemented with house-made sauces (bernaise and horseradish), and Santa Maria salsa. These premium proteins, grilled on an open flame inside an exhibition kitchen, are the heart of Rare Society’s menu are my husband’s dream dinner. His filet paired with the crisp iceberg wedge salad and grilled asparagus was grilled to perfection and mouth-wateringly delicious.

I am our family’s seafood aficionado so I was equally thrilled to sample the Society’s seafood specialties including

the Old Bay seasoned jumbo shrimp cocktail and the skin-on King Salmon enhanced with salsa verde. Diners at the next table were enjoying Ahi tuna tartare and chilled Maine lobster so much I’m going to have to make a return trip soon to try the beautifully presented dishes for myself.

Don’t sleep on the bar while you’re drooling over the 30-40 day dry-aged cuts or the bedrock specialties that complement them like Oyster Rockefeller, the grande seafood tower or Parker House rolls with truffle butter. Instead, further elevate your experience with a signature Old Fashioned or an offering from the extensive wine list, which ensures the best blend of old and new world taste and charm. Open for dinner 5 days a week means there are no excuses to miss out on the bold, sophisticated charm Rare Society has to offer.

Ask a SOMM

A good sommelier is a helper: a guide to finding the best wine for your food and experience. For this month’s installment, we again approached South County-based sommelier Micah Sampson to address a few frequently asked questions.

Q What the heck is a sulfite and why is it in my wine?

A Sulfites occur as part of the fermentation process, a natural byproduct of yeast metabolism during the conversion of sugar to alcohol. They are completely harmless to over 99% of all people. In fact, the human body produces sulfites, a whole bunch of it, there’s already about 10 times more sulfites in you on a daily basis than a bottle of wine.

The thought of sulfites being a synthetic chemical added to wine is just a misguided fear. Winemakers might add additional small quantities near the end of fermentation to halt the process, but that’s the natural way to do it, like turning on the lights at the end of a dance party.

It’s also added during bottling as an antioxidant to help prevent spoilage. But, they only use what is needed to complete those stages, usually using amounts far within acceptable boundaries.

Sulfites do two things really well: they bond with oxygen molecules, keeping the wine from oxidizing into vinegar, and they push bacteria out of the wine

to keep it from spoiling. Sulfites are like bouncers at the door of a bar, keeping the bad people out without ruining the party.

Q So, why the warning labels?

A Good question. In 1987, the government stepped in and required warnings on anything containing sulfites. Here’s why… salad bars.

You’ve seen this at home when you cut up an apple, 20 minutes later it’s a lovely shade of brown and your kids won’t touch it. Well, at restaurants people weren’t eating the aging fruits and veggies either and that’s bad for business. The solution in the 1970’s and 80’s was to spray the produce with sulfites. Voila… no more brown produce!

However, restaurants were using up to 2,000 ppm (parts per million), which caused adverse reactions in several hundred people and cases were being reported to the FDA. So they banned the use on raw fruits and veggies and imposed warning labels on anything with sulfites over 10 ppm.

Q What about those scary reactions to sulfites?

A Sulfites can cause an allergic reaction, but in less than 1% of the population and rarely headaches. The main group of people who could have a reaction are asthmatics, and the reactions are usually breathing problems, throat swelling and hives.

The government did make a good move by trying to warn those who could have a sensitivity. But the damage was done, sulfites now looked scary. The vast majority of wines produced in the world usually fall into the 10-100 ppm range, so they are all required to have the scary warning on the bottle. Add in the speed of the internet and social media, you now have the perfect storm of spreading false information like wildfire.

Q Ok, then why do I get headaches?

A When defending sulfites, people commonly ask, “then why do I get headaches from red wine?” First of all, there’s usually twice as much sulfites in white wine as there are in red. If you get headaches from reds and not whites, then it’s definitely not a sulfite reaction. Secondly, there are a whole host of other natural components in red wine which can cause a headache – tannins and histamines being the main ones. Red wine contains about 30 times more histamines than white wine and, if your body has an intolerance to histamines, the number one symptom of an intolerance is… you guessed it, headaches! However, the most common culprit is likely a combination of two things no one ever likes to admit to: dehydration and too much alcohol. So, there’s a good chance your friend who swears they’re allergic to sulfites, and announces it ever-so-confidently, is likely just suffering from downing 4 glasses of cab sauv without drinking any water. Hydrate you newb!

Cefali & Cefali, APC

Trusted Accident Attorneys for the Most Serious Injuries

It’s a remarkable feeling when you can find someone to take your side. In relationships, sports: you name it. That one person who believes in you, makes you better, fights alongside you.

ichael Cefali matched with his person (his wife Courtney) long before law school - but their partnership extended through the long years studying for the bar and paid off in an even match that has stacked up in their favor many times over. Graduates of Chapman Law and California Western, respectively, they started the San Juan Capistrano-based Cefali & Cefali, APC in July of 2019 and have been fighting for the little guy ever since. From setting clients up with top-tier doctors and specialists, to negotiating stellar settlements, Cefali & Cefali, APC handles cases from start to finish with client health as their top priority.

Focusing on all aspects of personal injury, the Cefalis are what you might expect in such a ring: passionate, aggressive, and most importantly, honest - all traits that have contributed to the couple having recovered millions of dollars per year on behalf of their clients since opening their firm.

“The insurance companies would like you to think that they get to determine the value of your injuries, your suffering,” says Michael. “We’ll fight for every last penny because we know that you deserve it.” Clients appreciate the work that the Cefalis do. In fact, as of the date of this publication, you won’t find a single negative review of their firm anywhere on the internet.

Client Jamie shares, “I am so grateful for everything that Mike Cefali and his team did for me! Not only was he able to help me get what I was owed in my settlement and then some, but he was so responsive and kind and

had my best interest in mind! Not only is he a good lawyer but he is a good person which made a world of difference for me. I could not have asked

Michael and Courtney Cefali
Mit was very apparent that he cared about me and my case! He and his team are so HONEST and FAIR and it was clear from start to finish that he 44

for a better experience with a personal injury attorney! I have already recommended him to all of my friends and I will continue to recommended him to anyone looking for a good lawyer! Thank you so much Cefali and Cefali!”

Another client Carrie echoes Jamie’s sentiment, “My husband and I were rear-ended on the freeway. We felt bad thinking of contacting a lawyer, but after several months of continuous pain and medical treatments, a friend recommended Michael Cefali. From the beginning, he lived up to his core values of integrity, loyalty, and vigorous advocacy. Michael is a dedicated, friendly, and competent attorney who seamlessly represented our interests and ensured the outcome was in our favor. He treated us not like a client, but like family; he was there any time we needed him. He was empathetic to our situation and worked tirelessly with all parties to represent us. We don’t trust many people, but we trust Michael and his team and would highly recommend him to anyone seeking a professional, effective, and focused attorney.”

With five staff members to back up the stellar work Michael and Courtney produce, the couple remain incredibly hands on, based on a culture of empathy, integrity and advocacy.

“We craft each case personally, build each one for trial, and remain accessible to clients,” says Michael. “Personal injury attorneys get a bad rap when really we’re the good

guys. I like to think of our firm as a pirate ship. Nimble, clever, and tenacious in spite of being outspent by the adversary, we pry money from greedy insurance companies and give it to our very deserving clients.”

Giving back is the spirit of the firm, and community work creates a direct link between Michael, Courtney, and their circle in San Juan Capistrano. The couple and their team proudly supports a number of local charitable and community organizations including: The Boys and Girls Club of Capistrano Valley (Courtney is on the Board of Directors), The San Juan Capistrano Friends of the Library (Courtney is also a board member), CREER, the Pacific Marine Mammal Foundation, and Project Coyote. Michael is a member of the San Juan Capistrano Rotary Club and has been recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow.

The Cefali team’s ethics, constant communication (every client is given Michael’s personal cell phone for easy accessibility), commitment to their clients and involvement in the community keeps everyone growing stronger and healthier together. Remarkable isn’t it, that feeling when someone takes your side?

Performance & Professionalism: Dr. Slide-Door

It’s a new year. I, along with everyone I know, made resolutions: mostly hoping that this year would be better than the last, but some that genuinely reflected an optimistic mindset. Said mindset led my husband and I to craft one that hadn't topped our previous lists: fix broken things.

Like most everyone we know, our family has spent considerably more time at home these past months - and knocking around the house all day, we've made a priority

of a dizzying array of home improvement projects - both indoors and out - that we'd previously deferred. Turns out, we're not alone.

A common refrain among our friend group? Countless home appliances to be replaced. Garden and landscaping projects to embark on. And a rather surprising number of sliding glass doors in need of repair in our collective Southern California homes.

Enter Shy Hadan. Known as Dr. SlideDoor, Shy's father was in the business of selling sliding doors, but when he saw that there was no one to fix them,

he stepped in with a solution. “Usually people think they just have to be replaced, but that isn’t the case! We have a ton of experience with all kinds of doors, no matter how old, what material, or what brand.”

If hauling open your sliding door requires Herculean strength, it’s likely you’re experiencing rollers with dirt and dust buildup so they don’t roll the way they used to. Over the years, it’s common for the rollers to wear to the point that you may actually be dragging the entire weight of the sliding door across the track, which causes even more damage and drag every time you do it.

Whether your door is modern or ancient, made of aluminum, vinyl or wood … all you have to do to “remedy your rolling troubles” is schedule a free inspection. A tech will come out to see if the components can be fixed or replaced, and then...fix it. With over 25 years of industry experience, Dr. Slide-Door is the number one chosen sliding glass door repair service in Southern California. What sets them apart? Each member of Dr. Slide Door’s team arrives with everything you’ll need on site.

“Your sliding door professional will replace the parts right down to the rollers, leaving your door feeling weightless and good as new. You’ll be amazed at how easily your door slides open and closed.”

With parts made in Germany, you can be assured that your “new” door could last another 20 years: plenty of time to tackle out the rest of your resolutions.

Villa Roma Authentic Argentine

+ Italian Cuisine

They say a picture is worth 1,000 words. I always thought of that as hyperbolic, until I saw the menu at Villa Roma, and knew I would never be able to do them a literary justice.

The authentic Italian and Argentine offerings (alongside the casual market + deli next door) are as expansive as they are delicious from starters, soups, salads and hot and cold sandwiches to hearty entrees and sweet treats for dessert.

Seafood appetizers range from vongole and cozze bella vista (fresh clams or mussels served in white wine garlic or marinara) and calamari fritti to favorites for meat eaters like the palmitos con jamon (hearts of palm with prosciutto), chorizo or morcilla alla parilla (grilled Argentine sausage or blood sausage) and the traditional empanada - flavorful and flaky Argentine turnovers stuffed with beef, chicken, ham and cheese or spinach.

For the main course, the pollo alla cacciatore is a popular pick - chicken breast

sauteed with bell peppers, mushrooms, and white wine in a tomato sauce while one of my favorites is the salmone allo champagne - fresh filet of salmon in champagne sauce with roasted potatoes and vegetables.

But for the true seafood aficionado, where Villa Roma really shines is in its signature paella dishes which arrive chock full of flavorful shrimp, mussels, clams and chorizo in a saffron base. Other excellent options if you are a carnivore ... any of the Parilla Argentine style beef entrees (think grilled prime short

ribs, filet mignon). Can't decide? Opt for the Parilla Mixta - 2 grilled short ribs, 2 Argentine sausages, sweet bread, skirt steak, blood sausage and flap meat. But whatever you do and no matter which dish you go with ... make sure to order a side of Chimichurri sauce made with olive oil, garlic, Italian parsley and spices.

Featuring everything from calamari and vongole to grilled and tender sweet breads, homemade minestrone to their entrana sandwich - boasting tender skirt steak and a host of other freshly prepared ingredients. You might make it a weekly stop - even if just to take a look at the menu and imagine how many words it would take to describe the experience.

Go-To Nature Books About Bugs, Birds, and Animals, Too!

No one can deny the enduring appeal of books that feature animals, whether tales of animals in the wild, animal heroics (think Togo the sled dog or Scarlett the cat), animal antics that make us laugh, and fictional animals that take on human characteristics – both good and bad.

Why is animal fiction so plentiful and popular? Neuroscientists suggest that our brains treat reading about an experience almost as if living the experience in real life. In children’s books, animal characters can portray a broader range of traits, both good and evil, than we would tolerate in stories about humans (think the “big bad wolf”). These portrayals allow the reader to process powerful emotions and to imagine how others process feelings and experiences. The stories can be scary, but ultimately, the characters aren’t human and the story isn’t real. The power of the well-written allegory, whether featuring humans or animals, is to deliver difficult messages and complicated themes in easy-to-read stories.

So for all those children who are fascinated by bugs, birds, snakes, and other animals, we’ve gathered up a great collection of books for animal lovers, inquiring minds, or any child looking for a brave new world of discovery and learning.

GRADES KINDERGARTEN TO SECOND

What’s Your Favorite Animal edited by Eric Carle, various authors

Thirteen beloved authors and illustrators, including Jon Klassen, Lane Smith, Mo Willems, and Rosemary Wells, collaborated with Eric Carle to draw their favorite animals and explain why they love them. This successful collection of old favorites and newer names is sure to keep youngsters engaged, and may inspire them to write about and draw their favorite animals. At the end the reader will find a childhood photo of each contributor with their pet, as well as information about their books.

Panda Kindergarten

written by Joanne Ryder, illustrated by Katherine Feng

This beautiful book focuses on the care and learning opportunities that are given to new panda cubs at China’s Wolong Nature Preserve. Beginning with birth, the author describes how panda mothers care for their newborns and how the Preserve helps. Clear and detailed photographs are visual treats, giving readers a glimpse into the feeding and care of the young pandas. There’s a high cuteness factor as the adorable

cubs play, sleep, and interact with caregivers.

GRADES THIRD TO FOURTH Misty of Chincoteague (series) written by Marguerite Henry, Illustrated by Dennis Wesley

Marguerite Henry wrote nearly sixty children’s books and stories based on real animals, but this Newbery Honor book is by far her most wellknown. In the 1940s, she went to a Virginia island, where she learned all about the herd of wild ponies originating from a sunken Spanish galleon off the coast. Spending time on the island, getting to know the families, and even bringing a Chincoteague pony back to her home in Illinois to spend time with while writing, were all part of the creation of this historical fiction series. This is a charming and memorable tale of a young boy and girl living in a much simpler time, whose hard work and patience paid off. Misty’s descendants still roam the beaches of Chincoteague, partly in thanks to this compelling novel.

I am Jane Goodal - Ordinary People Change the World

(series)

This series was written for the author’s own children so that they could understand that the power to change the world is within them. The heroes are depicted as children throughout, telling their life stories in first-person present tense, which keeps the books playful and understandable to young children. This book has more than just the story of how Jane met the chimpanzees and changed the way scientists think about wildlife. It starts with her love of animals as a very young child. It will inspire any reader to believe that they too can overcome their fears and make a difference. This book has a beautiful message to children about accomplishing your dreams by being patient, working hard, and knowing that each of us has an impact on the world.

GRADES FIFTH TO EIGHTH Song for a Whale

written

Twelve year old Iris, the only deaf student in her sixth-grade class, struggles to communicate with kids at school. She feels a strong connection

“I love all animals. I have a fascination with fish, birds, whales - sentient life – insects and reptiles.”
- Nicolas Cage
52

with Blue 55, a lone whale who can’t communicate with others because its voice is on a different frequency. Iris becomes determined to compose a song for Blue 55 at his frequency, and to play it for him in person. This story is great for anyone who loves animals or has struggled to fit in.

The One and Only Ivan written by Katherine Applegate Ivan is an easygoing gorilla. Living at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, he has grown accustomed to humans watching him through the glass walls of his domain. He rarely misses his life in the jungle. In fact, he hardly ever thinks about it at all. Instead, Ivan thinks about TV shows he’s seen and about his friends Stella, an elderly elephant, and Bob, a stray dog. But mostly Ivan thinks about art and how to capture the taste of a mango or the sound of leaves with color and a wellplaced line. Then he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from her family, and she makes Ivan see their home –and his own art – through new eyes. When Ruby arrives, change comes with her, and it’s up to Ivan to make it a change for the better. If you like this Newbery Award winning book, try the sequel, The One and Only Bob

Integrating books about nature can teach a child many important concepts, such as respect, caring for planet earth, and the interrelationships among humans and the habitat. Children can learn how they affect the environment as well as how the environment affects them.

Capistrano Unified School District continues to invest and refine its schoolwide Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) to ensure the success of every student by working in partnership with the CUSD students, families and communities. The goal of MTSS is to identify struggling students early and provide the appropriate proactive support for only as long as the student needs.

The MTSS framework is designed to support the whole student, including emotional, social, and behavioral needs that can impact a student’s ability to thrive academically.

“We’ve noticed some of the bigger issues that need intervention these days are social and emotional,” said Dr. Greg Merwin, Associate Superintendent, Education and Support Services for CUSD. “These systems allow us to kick start intervention quickly. We have counselors, emotional support, and behavioral support in all three tiers, and we want parents and students to know we have this comprehensive program for our community. We can be of support to all of our families.”

MTSS is a three-tiered system of support that breaks down the different levels of needs for all students starting with the foundations: student well-being, teaching and learning and positive behavior.

Through this system, teachers, administrators, and staff are able to provide support to students, while keeping track of whether students are performing at grade level or if they need to be moved to a different tier, which includes more support. This could mean additional academic help, being placed in small groups for more one-on-one assistance, or working with a school counselor.

Through MTSS, teachers, school administrators and staff are able to identify students by name and need and work collaboratively to identify the best strategies. Identifying what students need allows teachers to better understand how to help their students succeed in school individually rather than a one-size fits all type of instruction.

The greatest take-away CUSD school officials want parents and students to know about the MTSS framework is that MTSS is available for all students — not just students who are having difficulties, but all students and parents who need additional support.

THE THREE TIERS, OR LEVELS OF SUPPORT, INCLUDE:

Tier I –– Includes the instruction and support provided to all children, including Great First Instruction and schoolwide behavior programs that meet the students’ academic and behavioral needs. Instruction consists of scientific, research-based programs and frameworks to align to state standards and best practices proven to be effective for all students.

Tier II –– In addition to Tier I, Tier II serves students needing more help. Students receive extra instruction and support, often provided in small groups. Student progress continues to be monitored by the MTSS Team.

Tier III –– In addition to Tiers I and II, Tier III interventions are for children who need intense support to succeed. Extra instruction and support that is more focused, intensive, and longer, often in even smaller groups or one-on-one, with specialists and with increased frequency.

WHY STUDENT WELL-BEING IS IMPORTANT

Student well-being has become a key factor for school officials who understand the importance of students having positive relationships, fine tuning their decision-making skills, building emotional intelligence, and developing their perspective skills.

GREAT FIRST INSTRUCTION SUPPORTS GRADE LEVEL CONTENT, HIGHER LEARNING AND CRITICAL THINKING

Great First Instruction (GFI) is designed to engage ALL students in meaningful, challenging and innovative educational experiences. GFI aims to give all students the best opportunity to learn standards-based, grade-level content and skills the first time they receive instruction. As professional learning communities, teacher teams collaborate to

plan lessons and assessments to support higher levels of learning, critical thinking and project-based learning.

BUILDING SCHOOLWIDE POSITIVE BEHAVIOR

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is the foundation for building schoolwide positive behavior and student outcomes by supporting a students’ behavioral, academic, well-being and mental health. It supports all tiers of MTSS and focuses on setting clear expectations for behaviors, and implements procedures and practices for teaching the emotional and social skills needed for positive behavior. PBIS directly impacts academic success and student well-being.

Combining well-being competencies with academics helps students throughout the school day, allowing them to regulate their emotions, make constructive choices about personal behavior and social interactions with students and teachers.

OUR INVESTMENTS IN MTSS

Through state and federal COVID-19 funds, over $80 million was allocated to supporting MTSS and student success. This funding was used to hire teachers, counselors and school psychologists, provide resources for interventions and tutoring, help reduce class sizes and provide PE classes with credentialed teachers.

Grupo Folklorico Nuevo Amanecer

Keeping the Community’s Children Safe and in a Healthy Environment

Grupo Folklorico Nuevo Amanecer (GFNA) is organized and directed by Audelina Dominguez and taught by Julieta Vasquez. GFNA was founded in 2016, their initial goal is to keep children in their community safe and in a healthy environment.

That being said, Grupo Folklorico Nuevo Amanecer is a non-profit organization located in Lake Forest, Ca. With few funds that are received, they are able to provide their dancers with a place to practice. Members of Nuevo Amanecer are kids and teens who love to dance and enjoy learning about their cultures and traditions.

Owners of Ricardo’s Place in San Juan Capistrano, Rosa and Ricardo Beas have proudly sponsored the group over the years. Grupo Folklorico Nuevo Amanecer has participated at various events around Orange County, including the recent July 4th Parade in Lake Forest.

We are so thankful for the opportunities that they have offered GFNA of Lake Forest, Ca. Although Audelina Dominguez is from Guatemala, Julieta Vasquez and her two sisters, born in California, they are proud to say they are able to continue the Mexican Culture.

Grupo Folklorico Nuevo Amanecer offers classes Mondays and Thursdays and is currently located in Lake Forest. Each class offered is filled with love and laughter from kids of ages of 5 and over. Every month GFNA has about three performances throughout their community where their members can show off their dancing skills learnt during each practice.

For more information about private events and dance classes, feel free to contact Audelina Dominguez at: (949) 468-6157 or Julieta Vasquez at: (949) 690-0222.
