Beware of Lifestyle Creep Sometimes more money can mean more problems. Provided by Ken Earwood

“L

ifestyle creep” is an unusual phrase describing an all-too-common problem: the more money people earn, the more money they tend to spend.

outcome. Assuming an auto loan so you can drive a luxury SUV? Maybe not such a good idea. While the home may appreciate, the SUV will almost certainly not.

Frequently, the newly affluent are the most susceptible. As people establish themselves as doctors and lawyers, executives, and successful entrepreneurs, they see living well as a reward. Outstanding education, home, and business loans may not alter this viewpoint. Lifestyle creep can happen to successful individuals of any age. How do you guard against it?

Resist the temptation to rent a fancier apartment or home. Few things scream “lifestyle creep” like higher rent does. A pricier apartment may convey an impressive image to your friends and associates, but it will not make you wealthier. Keep the big goals in mind and fight off distractions. When you earn more, it is easy to act on your wants and buy things impulsively. Your typical day starts costing you more money.

Keep one financial principle in mind: spend less than you make. If you get a promotion, if your business takes off, if you make partner, the additional income you receive can go toward your retirement savings, your investment accounts, or your debts.

To prevent this subtle, daily lifestyle creep, live your days the same way you always have – with the same kind of financial mindfulness. Watch out for new daily costs inspired by wants rather than needs.

See a promotion, a bonus, or a raise as an opportunity to save more. Do you have a household budget? Then the amount of saving that the extra income comfortably permits will be clear. Even if you do not closely track your expenses, you can probably still save (and invest) to a greater degree without imperiling your current lifestyle.

Live well, but not extravagantly. After years of law school or time toiling at start-ups, getting hired by the right firm and making that career leap can be exhilarating – but it should not be a gateway to runaway debt. According to the Federal Reserve’s latest Survey of Consumer Finances, the average American head of household aged 35-44 carries slightly more than $100,000 of non-housing debt. This is one area of life where you want to be below average.1

Avoid taking on new fixed expenses that may not lead to positive outcomes. Shouldering a fixed mortgage payment as a condition of home ownership? Good potential

Fall Gala 2019 nets $275,000

to Support MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center

S

ailboat masts jutted toward the sky, and majestic white vessels peppered the famous Newport Harbor on Oct. 12, 2019, creating a picturesque landscape for MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center Foundation’s Fall Gala 2019, held at Balboa Bay Resort in Newport Beach.

“We have been doing this event for 17 years, and we are so grateful to those of you who continue to attend and support Orange Coast Medical Center year after year,” said Stimson.

The annual black-tie event raised approximately $275,000 (net) to benefit the needs of Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley.

Huntington Beach residents Dave Theil and Resa Evans, Platinum Sponsors. Evans is Chair of the Board of Directors for MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center

He turned the podium over to Marcia Manker, CEO of Orange Coast Medical Center, who not only thanked the guests for attending, but also for their tangible impact. She remarked that their generosity enabled the hospital to complete an extensive emergency room expansion project, which took several years and should be completed by the end of the year. “When it’s finished, thanks to you, our emergency room will have doubled in size, enabling our team of emergency physicians and staff to efficiently treat the 35,000 patients we see each year in a new, spacious facility,” Manker said. Thanks to the generous gala sponsors, 100 percent of the proceeds from the evening will directly benefit the needs of Orange Coast Medical Center.

After a VIP reception in the resort’s elegant library, and a hosted cocktail hour for guests in the foyer, the approximately 260 guests in stylish formal gowns and tuxes slowly wandered into the main ballroom, decorated to capture the free-spirited sailing and yacht lifestyle that epitomizes Newport Beach. The evening program began with a welcome by Paul Stimson, executive director of Orange Coast Medical Center Foundation, who recognized notable guests, including Steve Nagel, mayor of Fountain Valley, and hospital board members.

Son Duong, MD, and Elizabeth Nghiem, MD, donated a luxury suite for an Anaheim Ducks game to the live auction. Huntington Beach residents Susan and John Ridgeway were the highest bidders.

DOES YOUR CANCER SLEEP WHEN YOU DO? Why You Should Act! By Robert G. Pugach MD

In a word, the answer is NO. There’s a myth that has been circulating for many years – that prostate cancer is a slow growing tumor and is not likely to cause serious health problems for the men diagnosed with it. The myth started because of concerns about the side effects of traditional treatments such as radical surgery and radiation.

W

hile radical prostate surgical techniques and modern radiation delivery devices have improved significantly over more than 50 years, men are left with the reality that surgery causes permanent urinary incontinence (urine leakage) in at least 35% of patients and radiation can result in skin burns, rectal damage, permanent diarrhea and unacceptably high recurrence rates. This reality has caused many men to avoid treatment for their cancer so as not to become part of these very troubling statistics.

the prostate, there is no way to put it back in. In other words, there is no way to cure it.

But that approach ignores the reality of cancer – nothing stops it from growing. Cancers grow every second of every day. When you go to sleep at night your cancer cells continue to divide, multiply and expand. Growth rates accelerate over time; they never decrease. Cancer growth is exponential – the first cancer cell divides and becomes 2, those double and become 4, 16, 256, 65,000… until the cell count in a prostate with cancer is typically in the millions. Cancers mutate and can become more aggressive, resulting in a higher likelihood of spreading throughout the pelvis or to bones throughout a man’s body causing severe, constant pain, stress fractures, spinal column collapse and paralysis.

Don’t ignore your cancer – respect it for what it is. A constantly growing, potentially lethal or debilitating disease. Early detection and advanced treatments like HIFU can result in men being cancer survivors without side effects seen with older treatment methods. When my prostate cancer was diagnosed, I didn’t hesitate! If you have any questions, please call my dedicated prostate cancer line, (844) HIFU DOC or visit www.westernstatesHIFU.com

I have been privileged to work with some remarkable scientists and engineers to help the development of High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) over the past 15 years. HIFU today has a urinary incontinence rate of 3% and an ED rate of 5%. Cancer cure rates are comparable to those achieved with surgery. It’s why I chose HIFU for my prostate cancer treatment 2 ½ years ago.

Call Western States HIFU at 1-844-443-8362 to schedule your Consultation. For other urological concerns, visit www.pacificcoasturology.com and advancedvasectomy.com

Imagine a bathtub filling slowly with water from a dripping faucet. Eventually, the water overflows. Once that happens, there’s no way to put it back in the tub. In a similar way, once prostate cancer gets beyond the capsule of

PICTURING A PRACTICAL PARADISE:

SURF CITY’S 5 POINTS PLAZA By Jody Robinson

Think fast: Name a spot in Huntington Beach that has everything you need all in one city block. I can almost guarantee that you’re thinking of Huntington Beach’s 5 Points Plaza. And if you’re not, you should be.

T

he premier destination for shopping, dining, community and more since 1961, Surf City’s favorite lifestyle center has everything you’d ever want all under the great blue Southern California sky - year round, rain (unlikely) or shine. With a selection of both local and national retailers, 5 Points Plaza offers the best in style, juxtaposing jewelry stores with sporting goods and soothing scents with sugary sweets. From your head to your toes, they’ve got you covered, literally. Phenix Salon Suites can tame the unruly locks before you skip off to sample the latest scented body lotions, sprays, candles and other accoutrements for a relaxing apres shopping soak from Bath & Body Works, and on to some special occasion gifting at Affinity & Co. Jewelers. With so many options, you can easily while away an afternoon whittling down your holiday shopping list and pampering yourself a bit before joining friends or family for dinner and drinks at the iconic Mario’s Mexican Food & Cantina or savor delicious Japanese cuisine at Hashigo Sushi.

Try their delicious made to order meals with homemade soups, salads, rice bowls, and more made from fresh, natural ingredients. Start your day off with a sweet treat at Duck Donuts, the fastest growing donut store in the U.S. where it all begins with service with a smile and a signature vanilla cake donut freshly made from the moment you order. The rest is up to you …start with a coating (bare, cinnamon sugar,

icing, etc.), pick a topping (rainbow, graham cracker, shredded coconut, etc.) and a drizzle (hot fudge, salted caramel). You can feel good about the sugar rush knowing that Duck Donuts, like all the 5 Points Plaza retailers, makes an effort to pair up with non-profits in the area and raise awareness about the causes near and dear to its community. Building support locally and giving back make every meal more life-giving than the last. Exhausted from the grind? Or indulged in one too many decadent treats at Java Bakery Café? Check out the #1 OC Hotlist winner seven years running: CloudMover Day Spa offers facials and peels, massages, tanning, lash extensions and more. Also at the center are Great Clips and Glitz Nail Bar, polishing nails since 1981. Only using the

All Ages Fun By Jody Robinson

J

ust across the big blue bay from Southern California’s most laid back city, Coronado Island is San Diego’s best kept secret. Fun for family outings, or a mid-week escape from busy Los Angeles or Orange Counties, the island boasts a rich, romantic history and charming small town atmosphere that I’m certain proves to be a particularly welcome respite for those looking for a relaxing retreat from their worka-day worlds. Such was the case for my husband and I on a recent weekend getaway, but that isn’t to imply there is any shortage of activities. We brought the kids along and discovered that there is truly something for everyone, at every speed. Although locals refer to it as “the island,” Coronado is really a peninsula connected to the mainland by a finger

on

Coronado Island of land called the Silver Strand. With wide leafy streets lined with Victorian homes and Southern California beach bungalows, the island is small enough to walk almost anywhere (it’s only a mile from the San Diego Bay side of the peninsula to the Pacific Ocean). Once we parked the car at our “home base” upon arrival at the ideally situated and idyllic Glorietta Bay Inn (more on that in a minute), we literally left it in the lot the entire stay and tooled around town on foot or on two wheels.

14

Our weekend away was defined by unparalleled accommodation, scenic splendor, family bonding and even a bit of history. A visit to the Coronado Museum offers a glimpse into the life on the island dating back to the 1880s. For an active afternoon endeavor, there are plenty of places to rent a kayak or paddleboard to cruise under the bay bridge. For our part, we opted to take a two-wheeled tour to explore the environs at a leisurely pace.

We rented bicycles from Wheel Fun Rentals (wheelfunrentals.com) and started off along Coronado Beach before spending the better part of the afternoon tooling around town, along the Bayshore Bikeway, past Glorietta Bay and the Coronado Golf Course and under the Coronado Bridge (if you continue following the well-marked bike path, you’ll end up at the Coronado Ferry Landing, where a ten-minute ride would bring you to downtown San Diego.) Fans of author L. Frank Baum’s iconic classic “The Wizard of Oz” will enjoy pedal-

basking and relaxing on the eternally sunny Coronado Island. I have to say, our family learned everything we now know about the Spreckels Mansion and Coronado Island from Nancy, who provided a thorough and entertaining accounting of the island’s history and famous (and infamous) highlights. If all you want to do is sit back and let someone else play tour guide, the Old Town Trolley is just the fit. Looking for an even more tranquil experience? Sit back and take in the surf, sand and spectacular sunsets

end stay, my husband and I strolled the picturesque stretch of sand and surf that meanders for over a mile along Ocean Boulevard in front of historic and glamorous houses. Voted among the top 10 beaches in the USA by the Travel Channel, this long and wide coastline is great for walks, runs, beach volleyball or sandcastle building. If you’re traveling with a furry friend, there’s even a leash-free dog zone at the far end of the beach where pups can frolic in the waves.

When we travel with the kids, we always try to incorporate an activity or educational opportunity to learn something “remarkable” or interesting about each locale. Sometimes we happen to stumble upon a unique aspect of the area and other times, it’s an endeavor best left in the hands of the professionals - in this case, local knowledge in the form of Nancy Cobb, Coronado Island resident and owner of the Coronado Walking Tour (coronadowalkingtour.com). The 90-minute guided stroll starts in the Music Room of the The Glorietta Bay Inn and offers walk-bys of castles and cottages, along with a legendary tale or two about movie stars who’ve spent time

The structure was originally designed with the simple, classic lines of Italian Renaissance to showcase its six bedrooms, three baths, a parlor, dining room and library. At that time, Spreckels’ Mansion featured a brass cage elevator, a marble staircase with leather-padded handrails, skylights, marble floors and some of the Island’s most spectacular gardens. The home was built with reinforced steel

and concrete, an earthquake precaution Spreckels insisted upon after living through the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. In 1913, Spreckels, a dedicated musician and pipe organist, added a spectacular 800-square-foot Music Room with an enormous 41-rank Aeolian Pipe Organ. The horseshoe-shaped Music Room, which can be enjoyed today with its player piano and as the starting point of the aforementioned historic tour of Coronado, boasts

Each of the historic mansion rooms are uniquely styled: the Sugar Baron Room, originally the private bedroom of Mrs. Spreckels, features a king-bedded room with a large balcony and a spectacular view of Glorietta Bay; the Spreckels Suite (once the private bedroom of John D. Spreckels), this beautiful room has a living room area with a convenient kitchenette, and a separate bedroom with a king size bed. French doors off the living room open up to a spacious balcony with an equally gorgeous view of Glorietta Bay. Amenities for all accommodations include access to a heated pool, complimentary continental breakfast and daily afternoon refreshments. And bonus! Glorietta Bay Inn offers its guests complimentary beach chairs, towels, and toys - so there’s no excuse not to stake out your own spot to soak up the sun. And with year round Vitamin D, you’ll never run out of reasons to visit.

HOPE GROWS HERE:

City of Hope Opens Next Month in Newport Beach Here’s what’s planned for the new facility and how patients can get the latest in cancer care

W

hen Kandace McMenomy received her second breast cancer diagnosis at age 35, she did what many of her fellow Orange County residents have done for years. She steeled herself for the 100mile round-trip commute and sought treatment at City of Hope, a worldrenowned independent research and treatment center for cancer in Duarte. Despite the drive, she knew that it was the best place to receive lifesaving care. “Discipline, determination and drive is how I, and my partner City of Hope, have conquered my cancer and turned me into a warrior,” said Kandace, a Laguna Beach resident who is now healthy, strong and has returned to running marathons. Patients like Kandace soon can access City of Hope’s world-class care

and pioneering research closer to home. Responding to the pressing needs of the Orange County community, City of Hope is investing $1 billion in a comprehensive cancer campus and network that will change the way cancer care is delivered. The campus on 11 acres at Five Point Gateway in Irvine will include an outpatient center, opening in 2021, and Orange County’s only specialty hospital exclusively focused on treating and curing cancer, which will open in 2025. Adding to its world-class network, City of Hope will also open several clinical locations in Orange County; the first one will open in Newport Beach in January. City of Hope Newport Beach, a 12,500-square-foot location at 1601 Avocado Avenue, is conveniently located in Fashion Island. It will offer ac-

18

cess to a variety of cancer specialists and house a state-of-the-art infusion center offering a comfortable setting for treatments and medical and surgical oncology services. Patients and their families also can access: • A precision cancer prevention and early detection program • Supportive care and survivorship programs • A wide range of City of Hope specialists dedicated to finding the best treatments for each patient. “We’re fulfilling our promise to the community and bringing tomorrow’s discoveries to the people who need them today,” said Annette Walker, president of City of Hope Orange County. “This major expansion will

extend our mission of personalized, compassionate and technologically advanced care to the region — bringing our highly specialized experts much closer to patients like Kandace who benefit from our lifesaving treatments.” With its expansion into Orange County, City of Hope is filling a big need in the community. Nearly 20 percent of local residents with cancer currently travel outside of the area for care.

Experts Who Think About Fighting Cancer Every Hour of Every Day Amrita Y. Krishnan, M.D., FACP, is among the noted cancer specialists who will practice at City of Hope in Newport Beach. An Orange County resident, Dr. Krishnan is director of the Judy and Bernard Briskin Center for Myeloma, which is part of the Hematologic Malignancies Institute at City of Hope, and serves on the board of the International Myeloma Society. Dr. Krishnan is among the many top specialists singularly focused on cancer breakthroughs. Aware early on of her calling to medicine, she came to City of Hope 23 years ago to do a second fellowship on bone marrow – or stem cell – transplantation. She never left because she found at City of Hope a passion for innovation, which

Ranked the best cancer hospital in California by U.S. News & World Report, City of Hope is one of just 50 comprehensive cancer centers in the country. encourages clinicians to develop unique therapies. Among the present day’s most promising treatments are targeted, individualized therapies that use drugs or other substances to identify and attack cancer cells more precisely. This personalized approach is considered a groundbreaking new response to cancer, and it is just one of the areas where City of Hope is leading the way. “We are living in a time of great promise and innovation in cancer research and care,” Dr. Krishnan said. “I am so pleased to bring this expertise to my community. I look forward to the day when patients can access City of Hope’s cutting-edge therapy in our neighborhood.” Accomplished hematologist-oncologist Tanya Siddiqi, M.D. who specializes in diagnosing and treating blood cancers, will practice from Newport, bringing her expertise closer to home for residents of Orange County. Dr. Siddiqi is also a supervising physician at City of Hope’s anti-coagulation clinic, which treats patient with blood clotting disorders.

Wade Smith, M.D., a medical oncologist with deep expertise in breast cancer, will also be practicing in Newport Beach. Dr. Smith is currently seeing patients in City of Hope’s Fountain Valley office and is an assistant clinical professor in City of Hope’s Department of Medical Oncology & Therapeutics Research. Dr. Smith , an Orange County resident, understands the toll a cancer diagnosis takes and knows it can be overwhelming. He guides patients through their treatments, advising them that it is a process that starts with getting the right information and making crucial decisions at the right time. He also encourages patients and their families to take advantage of personalized supportive care services. “Our teams of social workers, psychiatrists and others partner with patients and their families to address the many physical and emotional issues that can arise during and after treatment,” he said. “I encourage my patients to be positive, ensure they have a good support system and hold onto hope.”

…IF NOT SOONER By Donald A. Hunsberger, Esq.

Married people preparing their estate plans normally nod to each other when their attorney requests the name of a person who will serve as their agents for their powers of attorney. Automatic response, like feet kicking when the doctor taps a knee with the Reflex Hammer: neither one of them needs to ponder their positions on the matter.

T

he next question usually takes a little more consideration. “You want each other’s authority to start when you are incapacitated, or would you prefer the power to start immediately upon execution?” The reactions of the couples are as awkward as if counsel had asked why their children resemble their mailman more than Dad. Some couples don’t look up for a moment; some shake their heads and stare at the glass on the conference room table. Suddenly inspired, one of them spouts more of an excuse than a question. “Well, what if one of the agents, not my wife of course, but one of our siblings tried to use the power in a way we didn’t like?” The attorney hides her humor with a serious nod of her head. She knows the couple is thinking of their last argument, not anything a brother or sister might attempt. Counsel nods knowingly and leans toward the paralyzed couple.

“Two points,” she tells them as she points at a random law book on a shelf. “First, if you are concerned about someone mismanaging your assets, consider a different person as your agent. Fear’s a warning from your subconscience, telling you to consider a different option than the one who makes you shiver.” Facing the nervous nods of the couple, counsel moves to a second point . “And think of it this way: If you can’t trust a person while you are bright and alert enough to monitor him, what makes you think you could trust him if you were comatose? Why would he become more trustworthy if you had blacked out for a few months?”

Momentarily stunned, or sometimes surprised by the question, the second spouse at this point joins in with a crucial question. “But why make our Powers of Attorney immediate anyway? What’s the immediate benefit over having the powers kick in when one of us becomes disabled?” “Fair question,” responds counsel, “Here are a couple of reasons to make the powers start right away. First, if one of you is out of town when a document needs to be signed, or when an account needs to be renewed or a check needs to be processed, having an immediate power makes life much easier for the spouse who’s away.” Attorney sees agreement, then moves on. “The second motivation start right away is that lots of lawyers, this one included, have been telling doctor clients to take their time when signing documents that say their patients are incapacitated. Honestly? Most lawyers would like for doctors to get a second colleague to sign off on the declaration of incapacity, or send the letter to their lawyer for review before they sign off. Personally,” the lawyer sits forward as if she is going to tell the couple a secret, then continues, “I myself prefer to get both a second doctor’s signature on the incapacity letter and get the letter reviewed by counsel.” Wife leans toward the lawyer, nodding her head. “I get it. This caution of the doctors, that’s making the process of getting an incapacity letter harder. I understand that.” She looks at her husband, who is likewise enlightened. “Let’s start our powers immediately,” she says to him with the tone of authority. Husband nods back and responds: … “If not sooner.”

SANTIAGO CREEK ESTATES Beautiful New and Pre-Owned Homes in the City of Orange

I

t seems to be rarer and rarer an occasion these days to find an operation with a history of business longer than 5-7 years. The term “startup,” coined in 2013 by venture capitalist Aileen Lee refers to a business that intends to grow beyond the solo founder. Richard Simonian has had a career roughly five times the tenure of the startup, enjoying his reputation as one of California’s premiere manufactured home partners. Facing uncertainty is a state familiar to the startup, but also to any entrepreneur lucky enough to own stake in and manage a company, no matter the size. Richard’s leadership has expanded his current thirty-year-venture, Santiago Sales, throughout the western United States with 45 locations in 6 states Arizona, California, Nevada, Idaho, Washington, and Colorado. Specializing in low-cost manufactured home living, the goal is to offer exceptional products that make purchasing as simple as possible. The company’s offering, Santiago Creek Estates in the city of Orange, is a 55+ community, and pre-selling new homes for the recently expanded area of the community. Pre-owned homes starting at $89,000. Down payments are affordable. Financing is available and Santiago Sales offers Veteran Assistance up to $2,500.

24

“Because we care so deeply about our customers, we’re also known as the company that offers second chances to deserving families that have credit problems or have experienced sudden financial crisis,” he says. “At Santiago Sales, we are passionate about offering you the best selection of quality manufactured homes at an affordable price. We’ve earned our reputation for consumer trust through hard work and commitment that goes well beyond the day you walk in." Devotion is no accident, and certainly after 50 years in the industry, none can question the professional acumen Simonian displays. Acumen which makes a deciding factor in creating community, and offering amenities in each of communities - like on-site management, libraries, RV storage, clubhouses, pools, billiard tables, continual ground maintenance and regularly scheduled improvements and more. Fall: The Season for Dermatology A Q & A with Kristy Fleming, MD, FAAD Board-Certified Dermatologist and Mohs Surgeon 30

Question: Why is fall the season for dermatology? Answer:

a vampire.” Even a quick jaunt to the mailbox without appropriate sun protection will leave you feeling like your skin is on fire!

1. WEATHER

4. THE HOLIDAY RUSH

In truth, many dermatologic treatments are technically a form of very controlled skin damage. Damage activates the bodies innate repair system to replace old injured cells with new healthy cells, generate collagen, and restore fragmented elastin. Temperate fall weather provides a much more comfortable healing environment than the summer heat of Southern California.

The holidays are quickly approaching and everyone is eager to look their best for visiting family and annual parties. This is our busiest time of year for cosmetic treatments and appointment availability can be scarce. Nevertheless, we can almost always accommodate a “Botox emergency.”

2. UNTANNED SKIN Lasers are incredibly powerful exact devices designed to target a precise wavelength (color). Be it brown sunspots on the face, red vessels around the nose, or hair on the legs, the laser treatment is most safe and effective when there is the greatest differentiation between your skin color and the desired target.

3. SUN AVOIDANCE One of my favorite treatments is photodynamic therapy (PDT). PDT is a medical procedure that clears pre-cancers (so usually covered by Medicare/most insurance companies), but also provides an excellent cosmetic result.

Quick tip: If you have a big event, we recommend scheduling your cosmetic procedure at least 2 weeks prior in order to ensure you’re looking your best! The holidays also mean schools are on break. This is a great time for kids and college students to catch up on their skin issues without having to miss school or incur additional travel expenses.

5. INSURANCE WOES Unfortunately, medical insurances dictate much of our ability to treat our patients. Some patients are losing their insurance at the end of the year, while others have met their extremely high deductible and are anxiously trying to have any outstanding procedures performed before the deductible is reinstated anew. We understand these concerns. Our office stays open during winter break and we frequently extend our hours, but we definitely recommend scheduling your appointment as soon as possible. Question: Now that summer is over, are we safe to put away our sunblock until next year?

BEFORE

AFTER

However, this treatment requires strict sun protection. I tell my patients: “Pretend you are allergic to the sun. Better yet, pretend you are

Answer: Definitely not! Don’t be fooled by overcast skies, clouds are poor protection from harmful UV rays. I’ve treated many patients with severe sunburns who mistakenly believed sunblock was unnecessary without sunshine.

Elisabeth Donovan and her husband Paul Cambio, Of Counsel to the Law Office of Elisabeth Donovan

Ethics Are Now in Session:

THE FAMILY LAW OFFICES OF ELISABETH DONOVAN

By Jody Robinson Photography by Diana Schmitt, Accent Portraits by Diana

I’m not sure that I’ve ever associated the word ethical with a law office before. Maybe with an animal shelter, or a non-profit dedicated to planting trees.

W

hile ethical business tends to be fruitful, feelings of fairness, honesty, and equality don’t necessarily go hand in hand with child custody cases or marriage dissolutions. Six years ago, that changed for Elisabeth Donovan. As a young attorney, she worked for a large firm, taking on case

32

after case, learning all the things not to do when helping someone through a family law matter. “Immediately, I saw the need for a new generation of attorneys who took a more comprehensive approach to working with their clients.” Now, Elisabeth focuses on providing personalized and cost-effective representation to her clients in all areas of family law.

I sometimes wish someone had stepped in and helped my family while we were in crisis. Family law is the perfect fit as the culmination of my personal experiences. Visitation, guardianships, conservatorships, high net worth property division, prenuptial agreements. Going through a divorce or custody battle can be highly adversarial, “in a polarized system, and it is imperative to have counsel who will approach your case with long-term goals in mind.” Goals which include financial collateral - like college savings or retirement funds that can be quickly depleted in court. “Coming from a high-conflict family, I understand the dynamics of a family in crisis. Highly contested dissolution cases often manage to damage everyone in the vicinity.” Licensed as a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst gives her a unique insight into the financial effects of different settlement proposals. “Only through civil, ethical cases can children emerge emotionally healthy. When I became a lawyer, I wanted to make a difference in this world through my work. I sometimes wish someone had stepped in and helped my family while we were in crisis. Family law is the perfect fit as the culmination of my personal experiences.” Practice means more than just law to Elisabeth. Yoga and meditation are regular staples in her routine, as well as traveling in the pursuit of mindfulness: Morocco and Iceland just two of the more recent additions to the list. Of the seven continents, she’s been to six, incorporating her natural curiosity and intentionality into each step she has taken around the world. Helping clients make it through a difficult time comes naturally, when one has found their way through their own story of anger, disappointment, and healing and come out the other side. “I’ve learned to cultivate a real sense of mindfulness, which allows me to be present and available: in each moment open to my clients.” Her time in the courtroom has helped her achieve great results for her clients, but it is her passion that sets Elisabeth apart. Personally connecting with each person that walks in the door is the key to give them the best representation possible. “I work with each client personally to develop a cost-effective case strategy that won’t incur unnecessary fees, while obtaining the best possible outcome.” That’s where the word ethical comes in. Millions of families are faced with legal issues. “When I sit down with a client for the first time, I could see billable hours. But what lies in front of me is a problem to solve.” One that involves the past, present, and future simultaneously. Honesty and fairness must be the cornerstone.

CLIENT PERSPECTIVE Review Elisabeth’s client testimonials and it’s immediately evident that these qualities are the bedrock of her practice.

AREAS OF EXPERTISE Child Support Child Custody Conservatorships Divorce & Separation Guardianship Restraining Order Prenuptial Agreement Step-Parent Adoption

“Divorce is never easy. It is scary. All I can say is thank goodness I was referred to Elisabeth Donovan by a friend,” says client Ben. “I have heard so many horror stories about divorce. The three things that I see in most divorces are: Lawyers push to litigate everything and jack up legal fees, can’t be trusted, and they drag the process out for years. My experience was the exact opposite. During my free consultation Elisabeth Donovan told me told me about what it would cost (given that my ex’s attorney didn’t push back on everything) and about how long the process would take. And it ended up costing exactly what she said it would (drastically less than friends had paid their divorce attorneys in the past) and she wrapped everything up in about a month less than she estimated. She really knows what she is doing and was very ethical (she talked me off the ledge a few times) and fair to both me and my ex. I trusted her and listened to her advice, and I can say with absolute certainty that she is the biggest reason why, at the end of it all, I have a good relationship with my ex-wife. If you are looking to “take your spouse to the cleaners,” find someone else. If you are looking for a lawyer you can trust to settle your divorce in a timely and fair manner, HIRE ELISABETH DONOVAN!!!!” Another client, Kristine agrees with Ben’s assessment and adds “Elisabeth Donovan works hard and respectfully for each unique situation, and the affordability of her services was a plus. I am thankful for her and her ability to make you a priority … It’s very reassuring to know you have knowledgeable and qualified person by your side, one who is working in your best interest while going through one of the most stressful times in your life.” “Whether a divorce is on the horizon, domestic violence has taken place, or your wife wants to move out of California with your children, your legal advocate’s primary objective is to put the well-being of you and your family first.” First, before money. Before power, or accolades or inter-office bragging rights. Civility. Equality. True advocacy at its finest.

Crafted with Care

Christensen’s Custom Cabinetry & Construction By Jody Robinson

There’s a theory that Malcom Gladwell popularized, noting that anyone can become an absolute expert in their field, as long as they spend 10,000 hours practicing.

the shelf.” Based in Orange County, Christensen’s Custom Cabinetry & Construction works with tile & granite, windows, decks, remodeling, plumbing, and electrical; but it’s the hand-crafted, custom cabinetry and solid 3/4” wood refacing/re-fronting (don’t pay for plywood!) that keep customers coming back. Offering free estimates, 3D drawings, elevations, and a floor plan, John and his team offer only the best to each client that walks in their doors. “There’s no point in doing something if you don’t do it well,” John notes. Sounds world-class to me.

M

ore recent studies in psychology note that while this theory doesn’t necessarily tell the whole truth about being world-class, the act of “deliberate practice” certainly makes a difference. John Christensen has been refinishing furniture and creating custom cabinetry since the early 80’s. If you even throw two hours a day for that span of time at the wall, you’ve hit 8,000 hours. 4 hours a day? Well, suffice it to say, John’s an expert at custom, handbuilt cabinetry. In high school, a friend who graduated before John and went into the field of antique furniture would toss work John’s way, so he began to hone his craft. Work experience and a couple credits later, John was hooked. “Since 1983 I’ve been designing, building, and installing my own cabinetry,” he says. "I personally take care of the custom finishing, so your new cabinetry is never bought off

Holiday Happenings By Eva Kilgore

In Huntington Harbour

H

untington Harbour is alive with holiday excitement. First, get ready for the 57th annual Huntington Harbour Boat Parade, set for Saturday, December 14th and Sunday, December 15th. We’d love to have you participate by entering your boat! The theme this year is “Rock & Roll Fantasy” which lends itself to a myriad of decorating ideas.

The Huntington Harbour Philharmonic Committee presents the Boat Parade to thank you for decorating your homes. Why? Right after the Boat Parade we take thousands of visitors on narrated boat cruises to see those decorations. Funds we raise go to support the music programs for more than 160,000 Orange County children from kindergarten through 12th grade. Without our contribution, these programs could not continue. How will you decorate your waterfront home, or off-water home? To the theme? Whimsically? With a religious tone? Use your imagination. You could also win a prize for your home decorations.

Own a business? Corporate entries welcome, too. Make this the year your non-profit group, church or school enter a boat. We welcome them all. Thousands of spectators will cheer you on from their waterfront homes, little beaches, bridges, and all over the Harbour. Your decorations could win a special trophy from our panel of judges! As you are thinking of decorations, consider putting music on your boat for all to hear. Of course, music isn’t necessary....but it certainly adds to the fun!

We come together as an incredibly united community all year, but especially during the holiday season. Please enter your boat, consider do-

38

nating to the Boat Parade, and purchase Cruise of Lights® tickets for yourself, friends, family, co-workers... and anyone you think would love to see thousands of lights and wonderful animation on our Harbour homes. There is a separate entry form in the Boat Parade Guide to enter your boat, the home decorating contest (hhboatparade@gmail. com or call 714- 840-7542), and information on how to order Cruise of Lights® tickets (www.cruiseoflights. org or call 714-840-7542 December 17 - 23, 2019). It’s in the air. A wonderful season is here. Let’s celebrate! WE THANK YOU for all that you do.
