A DIFFERENT KIND OF DOCTOR

Rooted in Empathy and Experience

Do you ever wonder what it is that makes some Doctors so incredibly compassionate while others have a bedside manner better suited for the DMV?

In the case of Dr. Stefanie Bennett, Lac, PhD of Bennett Acupuncture and Functional Medicine, it is a case of true empathy. *I suffered from cluster migraines in my teens and twenties.” Cluster migraines are named such for their debilitating pain that is a step above the norm. “I had migraine headaches 3-5 days a week that were so intense I was often bed ridden and would become physically sick.”

Being that migraine is one of those complicated conditions not fully understood, Dr. Bennett’s options were prescription medications that often did not work and to make lifestyle changes to limit triggers that often cause migraine. “It was no way to live.” she shares. “I was young and should’ve been living a bright, vibrant life. Instead I was monitoring my daily caffeine intake, avoiding long exposure to fluorescent lights and doing my best to prepare for changing weather conditions.

As you can imagine, Spring and Fall were especially rough. We lived in Orange County. It was Winter in the morning and Summer by the afternoon!”

It wasn’t until her primary care doctor sent her to an acupuncturist that she found real relief.

“This is why I often refer to my practice as “The Resort With The Best Results.”You’ve been everywhere else

and been given the same disheartening prognosis, prescribed the same medications and told ‘this is just something you’re going to have to learn to live.” Soon after her incredible experience with the healing arts she made the life changing decision to abandon the family business and pursue her doctorate in acupuncture, “acupuncture quite literally saved my life and I wanted to share that with the world,” she proclaims.

Your Golden Years Should Be Golden

While in school she watched as her grandmother began to suffer from peripheral neuropathy. “Your golden years should be golden, not plagued with insufferable pain while doctors and specialists tell you there is nothing they can do. Understanding that Eastern Medicine excels where Western Medicine fails, Dr. Bennett set forth to develop treatment protocols for all variations of Peripheral Neuropathy (including diabetic and chemotherapyinduced) and now has a 90% success rate in treating this once difficult to manage condition.

“I was tired of seeing the older generation suffer unnecessarily,” shares Dr. Bennett. “Diagnosing them as just getting older and giving them a treatment plan of you’re just going to have to get used to it’ has never sat well with me so I wanted to offer them a real option for treatment and care.

The Magic of Compassionate Care

And what do those in her care have to say? “Dr. Bennett looked me in my eyes and wanted to know about me, not just my condition. I feel like a person, not just a patient.” shares Anne. “In fact I don’t

think she ever used the word patient.” Others proclaim “she saved my life”, “her neuropathy treatments gave me my life back,” and “it’s a miracle she treated my fibromyalgia. I don’t know how else to explain it.”

Dr. Stefanie Bennett has a long personal history in complicated, difficult to understand conditions and understands how tragic it can all be if left untreated. “I have sat where my patients sit. I’ve experienced their pain and suffering in a very real way. I know the frustration of feeling hopeless on an intimate level. It’s why I practice the brand of medicine I do and why I’ve made it my life’s mission to treat the ‘untreatable’. It brings me such incredible joy when I get to say ‘I can help you!’”

Furthermore, Dr. Bennett isn’t opposed to more modern medical solutions. “It’s in blending the time-tested science of acupuncture with recent innovations in medicine that get me the best results.” One of those advancements is ATP Resonance BioTherapy™, originally developed by NASA it aids nerves in regeneration by providing them the nutrients they need to repair and renew, “very similar to what water does for a plant!”

Dr. Bennett and her staff specialize in treating chronic pain, complicated neurological conditions and autoimmune diseases that leave other professionals scratching their heads. Ready to schedule? Call (714) 962-5031 for a comprehensive consultation today. For more information about Dr. Bennett and what she treats, visit www.bennettacupuncture.com.

CAN YOU TRUST Your Gut?

Do all of your joints hurt? Does every movement cause you to experience pain? If so, you may have a leaky gut. Leaky gut occurs when the Gastrointestinal tract is inflamed, proteins and food particles then leak through the inflamed lining and cause an immune response.

Do you have a “low thyroid”? The cause may be your gut. Your GI tract converts nutrients, vitamins, and hormones into their active form. Thyroid hormone, the regulator of metabolism requires this activation. The liver and gut is responsible for turning T4 (prohormone) into T3 (active hormone).

Do you crave sweets? It may be an imbalance of the microbes in your gut. Often, it is an overgrowth of Candida in your gut screaming at your brain “Feed me”!

Do you have a rash, eczema, or other skin problems? It may be your gut. Your skin has many functions and one of them is to rid your body of toxins, therefore problems with detoxification and elimination in your gut can, and

often do, manifest in your skin.

Are you suddenly unable to lose weight? Were you rapidly losing weight and then…nothing?! It could stem from your gut. Most toxins are stored in fat tis sue. When there is rapid weight loss, those tox ins are dumped into the body. Therefore, your body switches its focus from los ing weight, to protecting itself from this toxic load of toxins. No more weight loss.

Each year, nearly 70 million Ameri cans are affected by digestive diseases, from irritable bowel syn drome (IBS) to gastroesophageal

reflux disease (GERD). Despite normal colonoscopies and upper endoscopies, millions are daily taking acid blocking proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), H2 blockers and calcium carbonate for gastric distress; or laxatives like MiraLAX or Dulcolax, to have a bowel movement. These common medications only serve to patch the problem. They do not fix the root of the problem. It is necessary to look at the core functions of our gut in order to properly heal it.

The GI tract has the job of breaking down our food and absorbing the nutrients. It makes vitamins and transforms nutrients into an active bioavailable form the body can use. These fundamental processes take place on the surface layer that comes into contact with the food. This vital surface layer of our GI tract (called the epithelium) is what gets damaged with inflammation due to acid, toxins, food intolerances (gluten, dairy) and infection ( like Salmonella).

The GI tract also has the task of protecting us from everything that we put in our mouths and the average person eats 75,000 to 80,000 pounds of food by the age of 75!

The GI tract is the headquarters of our immune system and our first line of defense from food particles and invaders getting into our blood supply. Believe it or not, that important wall of defense is only ONE cell layer thick. Keeping this barrier healthy is the way to prevent and improve food allergies, chronic joint pain, chronic problems like sinusitis and even autoimmune illnesses.

Did you also know that your GI tract makes more neurotransmitters than your brain does? There is a nervous system that lives in the gut with a direct line of communication with the brain. There is also the Hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis which is a signal pathway that the brain uses to com-

8

municate with the body in response to stress. Serotonin, for example, the neurotransmitter most known for its contribution to our happiness, is mostly made in our gut. Therefore, the improvement of gut health could be a more prominent focus in mental health to reduce the reliance on antidepressant medication.

Most are now aware that the human GI tract is host to countless microbes (some estimate 100 trillion bacteria alone) that have a powerful impact on human health. These symbiotic organisms serve 4 basic functional categories which covers at least 16 different tasks. When the balance of these microbes becomes disturbed (dysbiosis) by use the use of antibiotics, NSAIDs, exposure to pesticides and infections (both viral and bacterial), we can have problems with indigestion, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea and get labeled with IBS or other syndromes.

Since the beginning of time, we have used out gut as a barometer of what is good for us and what is not. We look to what we feel in the center of our core, to delineate what is best for us in many cases. We often say “trust your gut” or it was “my gut reaction” or my gut instincts tells me…” It is no surprise, then, that the gastrointestinal tract is central to optimal health.

Through advanced stool testing we can assess your gut microbial balance, your current immune response to offenders, your levels of gastric acid and pancreatic enzymes, and the health of the cells that line your GI tract. With this information we can begin the process of returning your gut to an optimal level of function. Please take your gut health seriously and get to the root of your health issues.

It's important to be able to trust your gut!

We understand, questions about the vehicles worth, how to transfer title and how to sell as a trustee can be on your mind.

SHOULD YOU PREPARE TO RETIRE

ON 80% OF YOUR INCOME?

Imagine two 60-year-old workers, both earning identical salaries at the same firm. One currently directs 25% of her pay into a workplace retirement strategy. The other directs just 5% of her pay into that strategy. The worker deferring 25% of her salary into retirement savings needs to replace a lower percentage of their pay in retirement than the worker deferring only 5% of hers. Relatively speaking, the more avid retirement saver is already used to living on less.

This is a hypothetical example used for illustrative purposes only. It is not representative of any specific investment or combination of investments.

Examining a long-held retirement assumption. A classic retirement preparation rule states that you should retire on 80% of the income you earned in your last year of work. Is this old axiom still true, or does it need reconsidering?

Some new research suggests that retirees may not need that much annual income to keep up their standard of living.

The 80% rule is really just a guideline. It refers to 80% of a retiree’s final yearly gross income, rather than his or her net pay. The difference between gross income and wages after withholdings and taxes is significant to say the least.1

The major financial challenge for the new retiree is how to replace his or her paycheck, not his or her gross income.

So concluded Texas Tech University professor Michael Finke, who analyzed the 80% rule and published his conclusions in Research, a magazine for financial services industry professionals. Finke noted four factors that the 80% rule does not recognize. One, retirees no longer need to direct part of their incomes into retirement accounts. Two, they no longer involuntarily contribute to Social Security and Medicare, as they did while working. Three, most retirees do not have a daily commute, nor the daily expenses that accompany it. Four, people often retire into a lower income tax bracket.1

Given all these factors, Finke concluded that the typical retiree could probably sustain their lifestyle with no more than 77% of an end salary, or 60% of his or her average annual lifetime income.1

Retirees need to determine the expenses that will diminish in retirement. That determination, rather than a simple rule of thumb, will help them realize the level of income they need.

New retirees may not necessarily find themselves living on less. The retirement experience differs for everyone, and so does retiree personal spending. A recent Employee Benefit Research Institute survey found that over a third of retirees report spending more than they had originally expected. Only 9% reported that they were spending less than they had expected.2

A timeline of typical retiree spending resembles a “smile.” A 2013 study from investment research firm Morningstar noted that a retiree household’s inflation-adjusted spending usually dips at the start of retirement, bottoms out in the middle of the retirement experience, and then increases toward the very end.3

A retirement budget is a very good idea. There will be some out-of-budget costs, of course, ranging from the pleasant to the unpleasant. Those financial exceptions aside, abiding by a monthly budget (with or without the use of free online tools) may help you to rein in any questionable spending.

Any retirement income strategy should be personalized. Your own strategy should be based on an accurate, detailed assessment of your income needs and your available income resources. That information will help you discern just how much income you will need when retired.

Experience the Magic and Wonder

Universal Studios Hollywood

When they opened Harry Potter’s Wizarding World at Universal Studios more than a decade ago, I was ecstatic because our kids were in the thick of the book series and had seen all of the movies, several times. Our son dressed as Harry one Halloween, while our daughter was Hermoine. Twice.

That was then. This is now - turns out, revisiting with older kids was just as much fun. Families with young children will love Despicable Me Minion

Mayhem, the Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash, DreamWorks Theatre featuring Kung Fu Panda and the Super Silly Fun Land play area. Truth be told, my daughter and I still love Gru and the Minions and are all about Po.

We were surprised at the level of anticipation surrounding Super Nintendo World, the new immersive themed land at Universal Hollywood. Located in a recently expanded region of the popular theme park, Super Nintendo World marks its US debut with groundbreaking rides like Bowser’s Challenge and Mario Kart. Along with perfectly appointed dining at the Toadstool Cafe and shopping at the 1-UP Factory store, Super Nintendo brings one of their favorite nostalgic video games to life.

A unique combination of working movie studio and an amusement park, Universal Studios Hollywood

is fun for all ages - the kids love the thrilling rides and interactive attractions and we all love the world-class immersive shows like WaterWorld and the Special Effects Show. Let’s not forget the World Famous Studio Tour, which takes guests on a tram ride though the backlot of a real working movie studio. During the behind-the-scenes look at Hollywood movie making, visitors can see famous movie sets, experience special effects demonstrations and even come face-to-face with some of their favorite movie characters.

Highlights of our day include Transformers - The Ride-3D, the super scary (for me) Revenge of the Mummy (think high-speed roller coaster that travels forward and in reverse), Jurassic World and of course, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey and Flight of the Hippogriff.

The park was a feat to conquer before the addition of Super Mario World: now we have to level up to make it all the way through.

Travel Can Be Tough on Your Legs

Medical compression stockings and socks are a travel essential

Many people travel long distances and have to remain seated for two or three hours or even longer. They might not think much of it, but when movement is constrained, the blood circulation in the legs is restricted. This can contribute to heavy legs, leg pain and swollen feet and ankles.

Prolonged sitting is also a major risk factor for the development of phlebitis and Deep-vein Thrombosis (DVT). Deep-vein Thrombosis involves the formation of blood clots (thrombi) in the deep leg veins during prolonged inactivity. In some cases, blood clots

can migrate to the lungs resulting in a pulmonary embolism.

When seated without moving for a few hours – whether by plane, train or automobile - the risk of DVT could be four times higher and can happen

Tips to reducing the discomfort and risks associated with prolonged inactivity:

• Wear comfortable clothing

• Drink plenty of fluids (avoid alcohol)

• Stand up and stretch several times during travel

• Wear gradient compression legwear

to anyone during travel, regardless of age, weight or lifestyle.

JOBST™ medical compression stockings and socks are a simple and comfortable way to help avoid heavy, tired and achy legs and the swelling of feet and ankles.

Unlike the products available at your local drugstore, JOBST™ medical compression stockings and socks are recommended by physicians for their clinically proven gradient compression benefit. Medical compression products reduce swelling and helps prevent the pooling of fluid in the venous or lymph systems. The stylish cotton blend dress socks and compression hose available today increase tissue pressure to help balance the flow of fluid across the capillaries of the limb.

Edinger Medical Group

‘Care’ is a funny word. It means protection, maintenance, welfare, concern, interest. Edinger Medical Group sees it as serious attention: deliberate consideration for their patients.

Caring for the community since 1961, Edinger Medical Group has surely delivered on its promise to provide quality care and improve health outcomes for patients of all ages. The primary care group encompasses 11 physicians, 4 board-certified nurse practitioners and over 70 clinical and non-clinical support staff in 2 locations – Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley. What sets this group apart from others is that the providers believe in being part of your entire healthcare journey, and they do so by providing tailored care experiences unlike any other.

The group noticed its 65+ patients would benefit from a personalized care team whose primary function was to ensure seniors are staying on track with their health; and in 2020, the Senior Care team was born. With the help of a direct phone line, the Senior Care Coordinators assist roughly 3,000 patients with scheduling appointments, setting up lab work, refilling medication requests, answering referral questions, sending detailed messages to their doctor, navigating the patient portal and answering general health-related questions.

“It’s definitely rewarding” says Jessica Salvador, M.A., previously a Diabetic Care Coordinator who is now a full-time Senior Care Coordinator.

“It’s busy because there are so many senior patients who need our help but I’m happy to be a part of this positive change.”

In recent years, Edinger has been consistently awarded 4.5 out of 5 stars by the Integrated Healthcare Association (IHA) for the quality of care being provided to its senior Medicare Advantage patients – proving the resources and efforts made to enhance the health of its senior population were a success.

When I was younger, my Mom loved to read me the book “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie.” The plot essentially revolves around an ever-growing list of to-do’s that had to be accomplished, all set into motion by the simple act of giving a mouse a cookie. This tale came back to me recently when I purchased a new television at Best Buy.

What was a simple shopping trip ended up being an adult’s version of that circular tale. If you give a grownup a television, they’ll have to measure their wall. When they measure the wall, they’ll realize they may actually have room for a bigger television. When they buy the bigger television, they’ll find out they have no idea how to mount it to the wall. When they start mounting it to the wall, they’ll see that the power outlets are all in the wrong

places. When they realize the outlets need to be moved, they’ll call an electrician. (This could go on forever.) Luckily for clients who have been on the receiving end of ReelTime’s patient, intelligent, and personalized service, the rabbit hole of home automation doesn’t have to swallow you entirely. With the help of their independent certified Control4 dealer, it’s easy to update your home without upending your entire life.

After all, the true luxury of an integrated entertainment system is really dependent on its ability to deliver seamless entertainment. By placing every control at your fingertips, the team at ReelTime helps homeowners manage everything from how brightly lit your family room is, to your streaming devices - all with a single remote. And best yet? You can control your whole home from the comfort of your couch- even seeing who is at the front door, without ever

18

leaving your seat. Simple, clean, and uncluttered.

And on the home entertainment front … when you started planning for your ultimate home theater set-up and sound system, could you find the right media cabinetry for your particular space – cabinetry that wouldn’t catch on fire from the heat of the equipment, or that would simply

look good in the room? Did you understand half of what the televisions, receivers and other devices could do, and did you have anyone to hold your hand to make sure you weren’t overspending for what you wanted?

Big box retailers, the professed champions of value, are happy to sell you any home theater and sound equipment you think you might like, and send you off to figure it out at home. That’s what they do. And that’s all they do.

If you want the home theater system that you envision, seek the services of Skip Myers and his team of experienced professionals at ReelTime to take you from start to finish for the home theater or sound system of your dreams.

“Usually there is a part of the job that you find you just can’t do by yourself,” says Skip, who has overseen the design and installation of thousands of home theater and sound systems over the course of 40-plus years in the business. “You get your brand new television home, you’re so excited, then you realize you need to move an outlet or none of the cabinets you can find will fit your space.

We’re here to make sure you get the equipment that will give you what you want and the system that will work with that equipment, without leaving you to fend for yourself.”

Skip opened the doors at ReelTime in 1983. Today, the technicians and designers that Skip assigns to clients are all ReelTime employees, knowledgeable in all home theater and sound technologies. First, they work closely with you to determine what you’re looking for. Then they custom design every aspect of the project, from wiring to custom-built cabinets, frames, or built-in wall designs. Finally, licensed, in-house contractors install your entertainment system with care and precision.

There are a couple of things that people may not think about when they embark upon the road to their own home entertainment system.

“You need to think about your home theater goals,” says Skip. “You don’t have to do everything at once – you can do it bit by bit – but if you know where you’re going, you’ll save money and when it’s all said and done, you’ll have exactly what you want and what you will actually use. We’re here to help you determine your goals.”

Skip is also an advocate for getting what you’ll use, which is part of the design and planning process.

“You can buy everything you want to, but if you can’t operate it, what’s the point?” he says. “There’s the television, DVD and Blue-ray; there’s the receiver, there’s Apple TV… it’s all great, but how do you get them to work together? We’re big advocates of the universal remote. Not everyone knows how to get the most out of their systems with one powerful remote – they’re not expensive, but the best ones are computer-based. We’ll set that up for you so you’re getting the most out of your custom system.”

It’s easy to assume that personal service is expensive, but a conversation with Skip and the experts at ReelTime is free. Ultimately, in planning your purchases for the right outcome, you’re likely to save money while avoiding chilling setbacks. The only chilling you want to be doing is in front of your fantasy home theater system.

Cefali & Cefali, APC

Trusted Accident Attorneys for the Most Serious Injuries

It’s a remarkable feeling when you can find someone to take your side. In relationships, sports: you name it. That one person who believes in you, makes you better, fights alongside you.

ichael Cefali matched with his person (his wife Courtney) long before law school - but their partnership extended through the long years studying for the bar and paid off in an even match that has stacked up in their favor many times over. Graduates of Chapman Law and California Western, respectively, they started the San Juan Capistrano-based Cefali & Cefali, APC in July of 2019 and have been fighting for the little guy ever since. From setting clients up with top-tier doctors and specialists, to negotiating stellar settlements, Cefali & Cefali, APC handles cases from start to finish with client health as their top priority.

Focusing on all aspects of personal injury, the Cefalis are what you might expect in such a ring: passionate, aggressive, and most importantly, honest - all traits that have contributed to the couple having recovered millions of dollars per year on behalf of their clients since opening their firm.

“The insurance companies would like you to think that they get to determine the value of your injuries, your suffering,” says Michael. “We’ll fight for every last penny because we know that you deserve it.” Clients appreciate the work that the Cefalis do. In fact, as of the date of this publication, you won’t find a single negative review of their firm anywhere on the internet.

Client Jamie shares, “I am so grateful for everything that Mike Cefali and his team did for me! Not only was he able to help me get what I was owed in my settlement and then some, but he was so responsive and kind and

had my best interest in mind! Not only is he a good lawyer but he is a good person which made a world of difference for me. I could not have asked

Michael and Courtney Cefali
Mit was very apparent that he cared about me and my case! He and his team are so HONEST and FAIR and it was clear from start to finish that he 20

for a better experience with a personal injury attorney! I have already recommended him to all of my friends and I will continue to recommended him to anyone looking for a good lawyer! Thank you so much Cefali and Cefali!”

Another client Carrie echoes Jamie’s sentiment, “My husband and I were rear-ended on the freeway. We felt bad thinking of contacting a lawyer, but after several months of continuous pain and medical treatments, a friend recommended Michael Cefali. From the beginning, he lived up to his core values of integrity, loyalty, and vigorous advocacy. Michael is a dedicated, friendly, and competent attorney who seamlessly represented our interests and ensured the outcome was in our favor. He treated us not like a client, but like family; he was there any time we needed him. He was empathetic to our situation and worked tirelessly with all parties to represent us. We don’t trust many people, but we trust Michael and his team and would highly recommend him to anyone seeking a professional, effective, and focused attorney.”

With five staff members to back up the stellar work Michael and Courtney produce, the couple remain incredibly hands on, based on a culture of empathy, integrity and advocacy.

“We craft each case personally, build each one for trial, and remain accessible to clients,” says Michael. “Personal injury attorneys get a bad rap when really we’re the good

guys. I like to think of our firm as a pirate ship. Nimble, clever, and tenacious in spite of being outspent by the adversary, we pry money from greedy insurance companies and give it to our very deserving clients.”

Giving back is the spirit of the firm, and community work creates a direct link between Michael, Courtney, and their circle in San Juan Capistrano. The couple and their team proudly supports a number of local charitable and community organizations including: The Boys and Girls Club of Capistrano Valley (Courtney is on the Board of Directors), The San Juan Capistrano Friends of the Library (Courtney is also a board member), CREER, the Pacific Marine Mammal Foundation, and Project Coyote. Michael is a member of the San Juan Capistrano Rotary Club and has been recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow.

The Cefali team’s ethics, constant communication (every client is given Michael’s personal cell phone for easy accessibility), commitment to their clients and involvement in the community keeps everyone growing stronger and healthier together. Remarkable isn’t it, that feeling when someone takes your side?

How Can I Tell If I Have Skin Cancer?

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.

FLEMING DERMATOLOGY & AESTHETIC CENTER 23141 Moulton Parkway, Suite 110, Laguna Hills | (949) 916-5956
Dermatology
22
Kristy Fleming, MD, Double Board-Certified in
and Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery

Look especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.

WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW

1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.

2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life.

ACTINIC KERATOSIS

An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.

BASAL CELL CARCINOMA

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.

SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.

MELANOMA

Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.

3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling

A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?

B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?

C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?

D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.

E - Evolution: Has it changed?

F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others?

4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

Why Repipe when you can ?

Lead-Free, Leak-Free Pipe Protection

It is safe to say that I know nothing about pipes. I know a little about drywall, and some about framing; my husband has his general contractor’s license so I’ve picked up a few nuggets of knowledge over the years - albeit in conversation, not in practice.

Pipes, however, are a complete mystery. I have family who live on the East Coast, where pipes seem to burst with some degree of frequency in the winter, but that is the extent of my experience via six degrees of separation. Since our family moved into our “new” home in San Juan Capistrano a few years ago, we have since become something of an expert on experts: those who do and don’t know anything about pipes. There are a bunch of things I can now catch you up on: leaks, sprinkler lines, lead testing. But truly, all you need to know is this: In many cases, ePIPE can have your pipes restored the same day without displacing you from your home.

Topping my list of folks I’d call expert, ePIPE has been in business since 1999. With over 40 international and US-based patents, the company has contracts with the US Department of Defense, several counties across the States, schools, HOA’s, and thousands of individual homeowners nationwide.

Jason Houck, National Sales Director notes “twenty years ago this process was developed to be more convenient, less destructive, longer lasting, and healthier. Now it’s a patented, proven process used around the globe.” Traditional systems wreak havoc on a home, tearing up floors, walls, and ceilings. To get to the pipe, you have to get everything else out of the way: and then to replace the pipe, you have to remove what is there. “Instead of re-piping, we restore pipes in place. Many homes can be completed in a day, with the water going back on in a number of hours.”

Pool piping, fire sprinkler systems, water lines - ePIPE deals with it all. They’ll even test for lead and remediate as a LeadSmart® Service provider. Any number of factors can lead to corrosion in a system, often in as little as two years after installation. Any number of factors can lead to pinhole or slab leaks. So what happens next? If your pipes were simply failing due to changing water chemistry, perhaps you’re wondering if there is a better pipe? Turns out the restoration of your pressurized system can be as simple as drying, cleaning and applying ePIPE's patented epoxy coating. “The cleaning process prepares the internal pipe surface for proper bonding,” says Jason. “A bit like sanding before you paint.”

In researching what ePIPE has to offer in terms of the process, I don’t see the word drilling, or destruction, or demolition anywhere. Taking care of

a problem once it begins is one thing, but ensuring that you won’t have that problem for years down the road is entirely different.

Restored piping protects against corroding and pitting, in turn reducing copper and lead leaching.

“Because there is no need to destroy walls, ceilings, or floors, you save a significant amount of money in reconstruction costs,” says Jason. “I’ll keep saying it: we do the work without the mess and expense.” Ranked in the top 1% of over 300,000 California contractors, ePIPE is here to ensure your pipes deliver the way they were made to. That’s really all I need to know.

I’m sure you’ve seen them - those license plate frames that say “I’d rather be”, usually followed by something fun and outdoorsy like snowboarding, surfing, even walking the dog. I can list about 47 things I’d rather be doing than taking on another home improvement project.

I'm aware that the flooring in certain rooms in our home are in need of a refresh, but the process of selecting the right materials, colors, etc. just seemed too daunting a task to tackle.

That was, however, before I set foot in the 11,000 square-foot showroom of Beach Builders Supply in Laguna Hills. Located within the expansive space is California Flooring Supply - quite literally a one-stop shop for world-class, high-end styles from

manufacturers who are some of the best names in the business.

With over 50 years combined experience, Gary Vuozzo and the team of professionals here specialize in only the highest quality carpet, luxury vinyl and hardwood for your home.

Giving contractors, architects, and homeowners like myself the exact atmosphere and expert advice to compare and purchase the very latest in styles and technologies is what sets this company apart.

Gary, a third-generation flooring specialist, has been in the business since he was 12 years old, “working in Grandpa’s stores in New York.” His father championed the industry as well, and he’s proud of the legacy he continues to offer to this day: custom offerings and dynamic customer service.

“It feels good to take care of customers, and take satisfaction from a job well done," says Gary. "We are local to South OC so feel free to drop on by. Come meet our team, check out our stock or just come pet our mini mascot Buddy the pug."

Ask a SOMM

Q Should I pay attention to wine ratings? What do they mean?

A At the end of the day all wine ratings really are are opinions and scores from people who drink and know a lot about wine.

So if you need some help picking out a wine from a region you know nothing about, then sure, take a look at an online magazine and see what some of the ratings say. Generally, 88-90 points and higher mean the wine is going to be good. But once you get to the high 90’s you’re likely going to be paying a lot more for them, mainly because they have the high rating.

But I can let you in on a little secret, many amazing producers out there don’t even get their wines rated! The best way to find these is to look for wines with high ratings, remember the areas they come from, and then look for other producers in the same areas. You can often find killer wines for a fraction of the price when doing it this way. Another secret… this is exactly the way Somm’s Stash wines are made

Q How long do wines stay good after opening?

A This is an easy one, but still important. In general, wines will still be good for a day or two after you open them, but will start to degrade a bit from the moment you open them. Usually by day three you’ll notice the wines aren’t as good as they were when first opened, and by days four and beyond the wines just don’t taste right.

A little hint to get an extra day or two out of opened red wine is to seal the bottle with a cork or rubber stopper and store the half empty bottle in the fridge! The low temp in the fridge helps slow the degradation process. Just let the wine slowly warm up in a glass when you want one, cupping your hands around the glass will speed this up a bit.

Q What are sulfites and are they bad?

A We’ve all heard it… “Do you have any wines without sulfites? They give me headaches.” This is when the som-

melier mentally puts his or her palm to their face.

In the recent social-media-driven years, the word “sulfites” has become the new bad word in wine. But why? When did we become so focused on this one component in wine, treating it like a poison? It’s mentioned with an almost villainous undertone now, like some evil wizard is adding it to wine when no one is looking.

In reality, sulfites have been a known part of wine making for a thousand years. They are harmless to almost everyone and occur naturally in all wines. Yes… I said naturally in all wines. Sulfites occur as part of the fermentation process, a natural byproduct of yeast metabolism during the conversion of sugar to alcohol. They are completely harmless to over 99% of all people.

In fact, the human body produces sulfites, a whole bunch of it, there’s already about 10 times more sulfites in you on a daily basis than a bottle of wine.

The thought of sulfites being a synthetic chemical added to wine is just a misguided fear. Winemakers might add additional small quantities near the end of fermentation to halt the process, but that’s the natural way to do it, like turning on the lights at the end of a dance party.

It’s also added during bottling as an antioxidant to help prevent spoilage. But, they only use what is needed to complete those stages, usually using amounts far within acceptable boundaries.

Sulfites do two things really well: they bond with oxygen molecules, keeping the wine from oxidizing into vinegar, and they push bacteria out of the wine to keep it from spoiling. Sulfites are like bouncers at the door of a bar, keeping the bad people out without ruining the party.

Dr. Ivan Ho, DDS - Pro Smiles OC Committed to Exceptional Care

All throughout my youth, I wondered why people didn’t like going to the dentist. That all changed when I moved away from home to go to college, and had to find a new dentist for the first time. That experience opened my eyes to how intimate dentistry is and how vulnerable you feel if you are not comfortable in the dental office.

to see wonderful providers and I was extremely grateful for the care they gave me. The experience of rectifying my own oral health led me to pursue dentistry. I wanted to give back to a profession that changed my life.”

In 1992, Dr. Ho started his practice in Laguna Hills and added a second office in Rancho Santa Margarita and with great dedication and hard work, cared for residents of both cities.

Your smile/mouth is the first thing people notice when they speak to you. Finding someone you trust to take care of your dental hygiene is imperative to enjoying the confidence a beautiful smile gives you. Ivan Ho, DDS is one of those select few dentists you can trust. From the moment you meet him, you are immediately touched by his warm nature and empathy.

Dr. Ho has been caring for patients for over twenty years and has won numerous awards and reviews that focus not only on his excellency within dentistry, but also the warmth with which he treats his patients - as welcome guests and friends.

As a University of Southern California School of Dentistry graduate and an award winning board certified dentist, Dr. Ho lectures nationally and internationally about both cosmetic and implant dentistry. His expertise and warm demeanor have earned him the respect and trust of both colleagues and patients.

“As a doctor myself, extensive knowledge and expertise is important,”

says Patient Steve H., MD. “Dr Ho is truly an expert!”

Angela P., a local school teacher, echoes the sentiment and adds: “I’ve been searching for a dentist with honesty and compassion, I found Dr Ho through a co-worker and refer all my friends and family to him.”

Dr. Ho has had more than his fair share of time in the dental chair as a patient. This has given him the unique perspective of both a professional and a patient.

“I had extra teeth and gum issues that required multiple gum and oral surgeries from my childhood all through my adolescence,” says Dr. Ho. “Despite the many and varied procedures I went through, I was fortunate enough

“As my children started to grow up, I realized that I wanted to spend more time with them while I could,” he says. “So I sold my Laguna Hills location and focused on RSM, which is where I lived. I recently relocated back to Laguna Hills as now my children have grown.”

Dr. Ho has been enjoying his return to Laguna Hills and being able to care for patients that got him started twenty-plus years ago.

“It is not just fillings, crowns, implants, cosmetic dentistry or cleanings: it’s ‘beyond the nuances’ dentistry. Your oral health plays a very important role in your overall health and your ability to enjoy the simple pleasures of life like eating good food.

“After all, your smile is an indication of what is within.” Dr. Ho says with an engaging smile of his own.

Renew Ketamine Infusion Therapy

The first time I heard of Ketamine was a few years ago from a friend in nursing school. Then again recently from another friend whose mother suffers from fibromyalgia as she began researching therapies to relieve chronic pain. A growing number of studies have found that Ketamine can be effective for people with a myriad of chronic pain and mental health conditions, including treatment-resistant depression, anxiety and PTSD.

Based in San Juan Capistrano, Renew Ketamine Infusion is the brainchild of Tanya Dall, MD and Justin Yanuck, MD – board certified physicians who became colleagues and friends in their emergency medicine residency training at UCI Medical Center. Both have extensive experience utilizing Ketamine for various medical indications and treating complex pain disorders. Dr. Dall studied physiology at the University of Arizona, and went on to obtain her medical degree from Georgetown University. Dr. Yanuck received his medical degree from UCI and then completed a Pain Medicine Fellowship at Harvard Mass General Hospital.

Ketamine was originally FDA approved in 1970 as a safe way to anesthetize patients. However, as is common in medicine, often one medicine can have multiple uses and over the last 20 years research has been building showing Ket-

amine’s safety and efficacy for a range of psychological disorders. Dr. Yanuck and Dr. Dall use Ketamine nearly every day in the emergency room for things like procedural sedation, and treatment of acute pain. A few years ago, they had a conversation about how frustrated they were with the current framework for how most mental health and chronic pain conditions were treated, and that for many patients, they not only get little to no relief from these traditional medications, but often suffer undesirable side-effects. That night, some new articles on the efficacy of Ketamine came up in conversation, and the rest is history. Renew Ketamine Infusion was founded shortly thereafter.

The basis of Renew is to treat each patient as a unique individual, and to take a holistic approach to the entire Ketamine experience. “We don’t believe in a model where everyone receives the exact same dose, or the same dose at each infusion. Everyone responds differently and we treat you like the unique person you are,” says Dr. Dall. The infusions don’t happen in a vacuum: each session has a specially-trained MD (Dr. Dall or Dr. Yanuck) to oversee it, which allows for in-the-moment adjustments as needed, and is preceded and followed by integrative psychotherapy consultations with a licensed clinical psychotherapist specially trained in Ketamine assisted psychotherapy. Furthermore, each infusion takes place at their clinic which places an emphasis on patient pri-

vacy and comfort. Their clinic is far from the typical sterile medical office and has more of a spa-like atmosphere. The clinic opened last year, and the program is built on years of clinical experience and research.

Renew treats depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, addiction, suicidality, chronic pain and fibromyalgia. All of which have something in common: stress. When someone is in a chronic stress state, there is a reduction in the number, function, and quality of brain connections. Ketamine has been shown to increase the function and quality of connections. These connections allow neural pathways to open back up, producing proteins that increase the number of synapses in the brain. These synapses lead to a rapid resolution of symptoms – if your mind-body connection is restored in a big way, you’ll find relief.

Dr. Dall is quick to add that while Ketamine is not a drug that will solve all psychiatric ailments, “we believe Ketamine combined with psychotherapy gives patients - especially those who have not responded to previous therapies - the best chance of relieving one’s symptoms so they can live a life free of the burdens of mental and physical anguish.”

Patient Claire says she had been suffering from depression for years and despite trying multiple medications and years of therapy, she “couldn’t get out from under the weight of depression.”

Dr. Justin Yanuck, Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician and Board Certified Pain Medicine Physician Dr. Tanya Dall, Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician
42

“To be honest, I was skeptical about Ketamine clinics, I felt like if this worked so well, everyone would be doing it,” she says. “After my first session, I was a believer. I’m now two months out from my last injection, and while I would say I still have some baseline depression, I feel 95% better. Words cannot truly describe what the experience through the infusions taught me and how much better my quality of life is now. I’m so grateful for the entire staff at Renew Ketamine Infusion for giving me my life back.”

Dr. Deepak Chopra was interviewed recently, and stated that as a physician, he was taught to never use the word ‘healing.’ You could treat a patient or their symptoms, but you might not heal them. He disagrees, and so do Drs Dall and Yanuck. “Ketamine takes advantage of the idea that our brains are moldable: even when our brains have been damaged, we have the capacity to heal from within. Ketamine kickstarts this healing process.”

I don’t believe in a miracle drug. I don’t think that the medication we have on the market today is capable of solving all our psychiatric ailments. But I am beginning to understand that repairing the mind-body connection might give patients, like my friend’s mother, a chance to feel relief from years of chronic pain. Especially in cases where previous or traditional treatments have fallen short.

In Drs Dall and Yanuck’s experience, and based on clinical studies, about 70-80% of people will have significant relief of their symptoms. Long-lasting relief. This is a positively staggering response rate given the patient population are those who have tried and failed multiple other therapies. They set out to open a space that allowed for the optimal delivery of this powerful medication, and have succeeded in creating a program that treats patients “not as objects that are broken, but people that have the capacity to heal from within.

Where Medicine, Technology and Fitness Unite

When my mother started dealing with different health issues several years ago, I discovered there are few things as frustrating as navigating the labyrinth of medical insurance to determine what services were covered, the co-pays, ensuring that one treatment protocol wasn’t contraindicated by another, etc. - all while attempting to guide her toward better nutrition and incorporating fitness for a better quality of life.

Personally, I have always leaned toward a more holistic approach to healthcare so I was looking to escape the “process” and get straight to the result. The trick is, with medicine, there are no short cuts.

Enter a new model of wellness: one where you don’t have to choose be-

tween a healthy patient-physician relationship and the stresses of co-pay or tiered billing.

An Internal Medicine physician with a passion for preventive care, Dr. Sridhar Kundula, M.D. completed his residency at NYU Langone Brooklyn. Resident of the Year wasn’t accolade enough, so he went on to become chief resident during his final year. A hospitalist (specialist in inpatient medicine) in western New York after graduation, he also worked in primary care in suburban New Jersey before moving back to his hometown of Mission Viejo.

The lessons he learned led him to open Fitscription M.D. last December. In researching physicians who approach care as a whole-person specialty, instead of just vitals and

lab results, Dr. Kundula’s practice truly stands out.

His mission is simple: interweave personalized medical care into one’s lifestyle to reach optimal health. Hearing it from a board-certified physician, certified diplomate with the American Board of Obesity Medicine and a certified physical trainer hits different: “it is important to spend time knowing my patients outside of their medical conditions.”

But why is that so different from traditional practices? First and foremost, average time spent with your primary care physician is 18 minutes. That’s less time than it takes to watch one episode of your favorite show on AppleTV.

“Over the years in the traditional system, it became frustrating to rush patients through the door while recommending generic lifestyle choices and writing prescriptions,” says Dr. Kundula. The conditions are by and large the same - chronic inflammatory health breakdowns. Heart disease, cancers, lung disease, stroke. “But due to their physicians’ lack of time, most patients don’t end up getting the help they need.”

At Fitscription M.D., Dr. Kundula combines general primary care with personal training to create a custom health and fitness plan under one roof. Dr. Kundula monitors and analyzes your health data to create an optimal health and nutrition routine to efficiently and effectively reach your health goals - with consistent medical and fitness consultations.

Fitscription M.D. incorporates technologies that are usually reserved for larger institutions: FDA-approved wrist monitors for remote vital monitoring and equipment to measure resting metabolic rate and fitness analysis. Prescriptions aren’t written wholesale to address any number of recurring or persistent symptomsbecause personalized nutrition and exercise go hand-in-hand with any medication patients might leave the office with.

44

“I’m a well-rounded physician that is better able to prevent and treat disease because we have been able to remove barriers to the physicianpatient relationship," he says. "I'm excited to provide the community comprehensive primary and preventive care, free of the restraints of the healthcare system."

There’s enough evidence-based medicine out there to prove we don’t need longer waits for more rushed access to our doctors, but how does the actual care play out? Lifestyle interventions, advanced diagnostics, physicals, sick visits, follow ups, and access to Dr. Kundula seven days per week all add up to the delivery of quality healthcare through thorough insights, optimizing your physical state, and leveraging live feedback to maintain a strategy for future care. No labyrinth navigation or shortcuts necessary.

Graceful Aging with San Clemente Village

I think most folks grew up with the saying “it takes a village.” Though no one is entirely certain where the adage originated, many posit that it was noted in reference to either African communities or Indigenous ones. Wherever the origin, (and whatever age the adage refers to) the idea lives on cross culturally today.

One of the most incredible examples emerged out of the Boston area in the early 2000’s, when an online retirement service organization let its residents, near and far, come together to age gracefully surrounded by friends.

Within the last two decades, the model has expanded westward, catching the attention of Jessica Reiter-Flax, now Executive Director of San Clemente Village in South Orange County.

The Village concept which started in San Clemente in 2014 as a hope that “neighbors would help neighbors” evolved to include full services two years later. The 100% volunteer driven membership organization

provides services for local seniors ranging from transportation to appointments, grocery shopping, social outings to happy hours and help around the house. The average volunteer is 65 years young - looking for ways to give back.

“Sometimes they just have some extra time on their hands now that they’re retired themselves - most just want a really rewarding volunteer experience," says Jessica. "The majority of our volunteers forge lasting friendships with our members.”

Things like Sunday brunch or a movie matinee may not seem like they make a huge difference in the overall cognitive, physical, or psychological suc-

cess rates of older adults (aged 87, on average). But more than 70% of seniors want to remain in their homes as they age “and the Village helps them do just that. They can socialize easily, which reduces isolation, maintaining a state of continuous physical and mental well-being."

“We hope to continue our geographic reach to include more South County cities in coming years,” says Jessica. “Part of the Village Movement California, San Clemente Village is the only full-service not-for-profit service Village in Orange County. There are more than 40 such organizations throughout the state - helping older adults live their best lives, and our volunteers are always ready to welcome new members into the fold.”

After all, at this point with a full roster of wellness initiatives, grocery store, technology assistance and even fall risk reduction preparedness, it really does take a village.

BACK TO OUR ROOTS

On June 10, 2023, the communities of Tstreet Volleyball Club and Fairmont Schools will come together on the Fairmont San Juan Capistrano campus to celebrate the opening of the new state of the art sand volleyball courts. Tstreet’s humble beginnings started in the sand back in 2005 when owner and two-time Olympic gold medalist Troy Tanner wanted something special for his then 11-year-old daughter Bailey Tanner. “There was a lack of teaching and mentoring youth athletes in

club volleyball that I knew I wanted for her,” Troy Tanner said. “A lot of families in the area had similar goals for their daughters. Word spread, and Tstreet grew rapidly.”

In addition to a successful pro career both indoor and on the FIVB and AVP tours, Tanner had an incredible run with Misty May Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings in 2008, coaching the dynamic duo to an unprecedented 76-1 international record, culminating in Olympic Gold in Beijing. Tanner stated back in the early years of Tstreet, “The sand could be a volleyball player’s best friend. Sand volleyball improves agility, strength, and stamina, which translates directly to indoor play. I knew that when I started a club, I’d want to incorporate sand training.”

Now, alongside Fairmont Schools, Tstreet is getting back to those roots.

On June 10th, Troy

Tanner and Misty May Treanor will reunite on the sand court to share their passion and knowledge of the sport and give back to the up-and-coming generation of beach players.

Troy has surrounded himself with talented, hard-working, good people, and together we have created a volleyball club with a reputation for integrity, organization, consistency and of course, great volleyball. To be back in the sand on Fairmont’s campus is the culmination of years of hard work and brings Tstreet back to its passion to grow the sport both indoor and outdoor. We cannot wait to embark on this journey in the sand!

Tstreet’s Summer Sand program begins June 19th – we hope you can join us!

BRING DOWN THE HOUSE WITH THE

Beginning somewhere around the fourth grade, students were advised to pick an instrument for class, and I can honestly say I only know two adults from those classes who still play those instruments today. Needless to say, my music classes were nothing like the offering at School of Rock Huntington Beach.

A unique community of teachers, musicians, and families, School of Rock Huntington Beach sounds exactly like what it is, and also nothing like what it truly means. Founded in 2014 by a trio of performers, educators, and business owners, the industry welcomed them onto the scene with open arms. Larry Boodman, an alum of the Orange County School of the Arts, and Jeff Nunes were members of an L.A-based indie rock group known as Fourwayfree. Joey Acona, a production and performance instructor at OCSA for many years, knew Boodman through their common connections.

“The School of Rock was borne from the desire to create a safe place for supportive collaboration among students, and has instilled confidence, self-esteem, and discipline that will serve them well into the future pur-

suit of any goal, not just music," says Jeff.

Practical instruction meets professional performance education. The students learn on guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, or vocals. But their weekly private lesson is combined with a weekly group rehearsal, “as the students prepare for an actual rock show that they perform at the end of the season. Themed - ACDC, Arena Rock, or Grunge. And played on professional stages like the House of Blues Anaheim.”

If you’re not sure what you’d like to specialize in just yet, no worries. School of Rock Huntington Beach provides a free trial lesson to anyone interested, and all are welcome to give them a try. Ages 6 to adult are brought into the fold, and “given the chance to learn team work, practice commitment, and master their chosen instrument. It makes learning not only fun and engaging, but a team sport.” Glad I don’t have to be a kid to go back to School (of Rock).

Bahia Resort Hotel San Diego’s Premier Beachfront Destination for Family-Friendly Fun

When folks picture Southern California, they might bring up a mental image of Disneyland, or perhaps the golden coastline and its accompanying aqua waters. But I can guarantee at some point in their imaginings, they’re thinking about sunny San Diego.

Nearly perfect weather all year round, miles of sandy beaches, lush tropical gardens, and the spectacular Mission Bay which plays host to an incredible number of recreational activities on and off the water.

Tucked away on a private fourteen-acre peninsula on the west shore of Mission Bay, the Bahia Resort Hotel is the ideal home base from which to explore the environs - whether you are looking for a relaxing retreat lounging poolside with frosty libations or a more active adventure defined by biking, kayaking or motorized boating.

Recently renovated rooms and suites are amenity rich and literally steps away from the water’s edge

with views of the marina, white sand beach or the property’s lush private gardens and grounds.

For our part, our family of four opted for one of the newly updated Marina Suites (each with a private patio or balcony) overlooking the beautiful dockside boats on Mission Bay. The resort’s suites offer more space to spread out with a separate bedroom and living area and included a kitchen with stove, oven and compact refrigerator for a convenient, casual opportunity to refuel between activities during the day.

DESTINATION DINING

The Bahia’s new upscale restaurant, Dockside 1953 is certain to make waves (pun intended) on the city’s coastal dining scene with its picturesque waterfront setting, nautical-inspired design and eclectic menu of mouthwatering dishes by new Executive Chef Bryan Stuppy.

Dockside 1953 patio

Marina View Suite

Chef’s culinary offerings feature “a strong focus on sustainable seafood from local fishmongers and the highest quality produce from local growers and producers.” Seafood aficionados like me will have their work cut out for them in deciding between the literal bounty of “raw” standouts like locally caught Rockfish ceviche, Ahi Tuna tostada or Chef’s crudo. Can’t choose? The Seafood Tower offers an impressive sampling of oysters on the half shell, shrimp, ceviche and seared tuna.

I’m personally a fan of making a meal of several appetizers and the menu here provided a delicious opportunity to share an array of delicious dishesfrom the melt-in-your-mouth seared Day Boat Scallops and fragrant Bistro Steam Mussels to the pasture fed Wagyu and Lamb Meatball with whipped Valibreso and Calabrian Chili tomato sauce.

The warm, welcoming ambiance takes inspiration from its scenic waters edge locale with a light, airy casual-Californian beachside design (table tops and menu boards that resemble boat decking, brass signage, nautical light fixtures, furnishings done up in seafoam blue and sand). Several paintings of classic motor yachts and notable San Diego icons including the

Star of India, Point Loma Lighthouse and the Giant Dipper rollercoaster adorn the walls. A handcrafted scale model of a vintage speedboat serves as an eye-catching centerpiece of the restaurant. But the restaurant’s spacious outdoor patio with cozy firepits and unobstructed views of the bay are its piece de resistance.

OUTDOOR ENDEAVORS

As we discovered on our family’s previous staycations here at Bahia, there is no shortage of outdoor activity. Much to the delight of our teenage kids, options include tennis, taking a dip in the Junior Olympic swimming pool, stand up paddleboarding, afternoon bike rides, boat rentals for a scenic spin around the bay or lounging in a cabana with a good book on the secluded beach.

als. For those with a need for speed, guests can rent a Hurricane or Rinker powerboat. We spent an exhilarating hour with a spin around the bay aboard a 20’ Hurricane Deckboat - a fast, fun craft that’s also a super comfortable ride for up to 10 passengers. While boaters stay within the bay, our experience alternated between a leisurely cruise in the channels and a wind-through-your hair ride at speeds topping 40 mph.

Experience the best of beach living with direct access to the sand or choose a balcony view of the tidal teal just steps away. Take advantage of onsite gourmet dining, or the plethora of outdoor activity. Newly renovated, there isn’t a better spot in San Diego to stop and relax, all year round.

Endeavoring to meet the needs of all aquatic enthusiasts, Action Sport Rentals (actionsportrentals.com) is located right on property. Rent a single or tandem kayak, stand up paddleboard, pedal board rental or body board rental. Prefer a leisurely watercraft, Action Sport Rentals offers sailboats, fishing boats or pontoon rent-

Life. Organized.

Classy Closets’ unique, custom solutions for the home and office can instantly double or even triple your storage space.

Closet organization is something of an oxymoron at my house. Same goes for my home office. I actually do know where everything is in the stacks of paper that perpetually reside atop my desk, but good luck having anyone else make rhyme or reason of my filing “system.”

I’m clearly a candidate for the handiwork of a company like Classy Closets – if it’s a matter of function or simply

a desire to have your mess aesthetically addressed, Classy Closets will customize your work/life space with made-toorder cabinetry and organization systems for your home office, garage, bedroom, laundry room, pantry, media centers, wallbeds and more.

Think you can’t afford to bring in the professionals? Classy Closets, which has served all of Orange County and

San Diego since 2003, offers organization options for virtually every budget – from basic white melanine to solid wood cabinetry.

“Nothing we do is cookie cutter,” says Company CFO Gary Pavitt. “Although Classy Closets is a franchise, we’re not governed by the rules that typically dictate processes of typical franchise operations – particularly with regard to the materials and mounting systems we use. What works in terms of style and function at a home in Tucson, for instance, wouldn’t necessarily translate to a house in Huntington Beach. So we have the freedom to customize our work to our client’s specific needs and desires.”

Another differentiator is that Gary and his team manufacture their products right here in Southern California, which affords them the ability to offer their clients a broader range of product options at a level of quality that is “second to none.” And because they are “hands-on” from design consultation to manufacture and installation, Gary and his staff pride themselves on providing unparalleled customer service.

“What’s really fun is having the ability to create the products in-house,” says Gary. “I really enjoy introducing new ways to make things better, bringing in new products and keeping up with the latest trends in the industry. We go out of our way to keep our customers satisfied … that’s what makes it all worthwhile. As in any business, your customers are golden and we’ve been very fortunate that a large percentage of our business is in referrals.”

Repeat customers Marta and Mike Fowler of San Diego say that Classy

Closets is a “dream company - one that not only delivers beautiful craftsmanship, but also that elusive quality of excellent service. Every good cliché regarding their work applies.”

“This is our second home that Classy Closets has refined to meet all our storage needs, from closets to garage, from bathroom storage to entertainment center. And they never try to oversell, giving honest recommendations for products, charging fair prices within reach,” says Marta. “Their creative solutions and impeccable workmanship combine to make functional pieces we love living with. We have only one warning: Classy Closets is addictive, and you will find yourself wanting to spread the good news.”

In a letter to Gary’s business partner Kate Monaghan, Carlsbad-based Interior Designer Karen Wirrig echoes the Fowler’s sentiment and adds that “my new master closet is beautiful and your attention to detail is evident. I also want to commend your installation crew. They were on time, tidy, polite, and did excellent work … I will wholeheartedly recommend your company to all my clients. It has been a pleasure to work with you all.”

Mission Viejo Wigs:

Where Customers are “Family”

Mission Viejo Wigs is truly a family business. Not in the traditional sense, where its owners and operators share the same genes. But rather in such a way that every person who has walked through Owner Betty Darroch’s doors in the 30+ years she has been in operation immediately felt like a member of Darroch’s extended family.

As a professional hair and wig stylist since 1962, Betty began her career at CBS where her résumé reads like a celebrity screenplay starring the coifs of a veritable “who’s who” of Hollywood: Ann Margaret, Carol Lawrence, the Midnight Specials and the Sonny & Cher Show. She went on to work for the Hallelujah Hollywood Show at the MGM Hotel in Las Vegas.

But it wasn’t until she opened her own business in Mission Viejo that she felt as though she were “truly doing God’s work.”

Her clients today include people who are experiencing hair loss due to chemotherapy treatment, alopecia or other medical conditions. Betty specializes in wigs, hairpieces and toupees for women, men and children and carries only the highest quality brands. Each wig or hairpiece is custom fit to the client for the most natural look and feel – no one will know you’re wearing a wig unless you tell them.

“Hair loss, whether it is the result of illness, the aging process or heredity, can be a traumatic and emotionally draining experience,” says Betty. “We work with people on a daily basis who are facing the issue of hair loss for the first time. Our goal is to help you find the solution that works best for you and do so in a caring way that makes you realize that you are not alone.”

There are wonderful testimonials from longtime customers on her web site (missionviejowigs. com), but for me, the best testament to Betty’s genuine, caring nature came from a source closer to home.

When my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer six years ago, there were so many aspects of what she was facing - including the side effects associated wit chemotherapy treatment – that were out of our control. But my mother’s appearance was something she felt she could dictate. We knew she would lose her hair, but she was determined not to “look like a sick person.”

From the moment my mother met Betty, she knew she had found the right place and more importantly, the right person to help her. Betty shared so many stories of survival – of longtime customers and friends who fought a similar battle and won. Her warm embrace and inspired  hope and help steel her resolve to maintain a positive, fighting attitude when she was diagnosed with lung cancer.

The wig Betty selected was the perfect color and style for my mother’s face (and head) shape. The wig was so natural looking that my mother

received many compliments on her “new do” and no one was the wiser.

It’s been over nine years since my mother completed treatment and is now leading a cancer-free life. Although her own hair has long since grown back, she still often prefers to wear Betty’s wigs on “bad hair days.”

Thank you Betty!

Segerstrom Hall

The New York Times calls it “the best musical of this century.” The Washington Post says, “It is the kind of evening that restores your faith in musicals.” And Entertainment Weekly says, “Grade A: the funniest musical of all time.” Jimmy Fallon of The Tonight Show calls it “Genius. Brilliant. Phenomenal.” It’s The Book of Mormon, the nine-time Tony Award® winning Best Musical.

This outrageous musical comedy follows the adventures of a mismatched pair of missionaries, sent halfway across the world to spread the Good Word. With standing room only productions in London, on Broadway, and across North America, The Book of Mormon has truly become an international sensation. Contains explicit language.
