Effective training

As with every kind of training, it’s the training that actually happens that’s the most effective! Because the exercises in Write On are quite short, you will be able to fit in regular writing-practice sessions with your students.

Building your students’ skills – and confidence

Writing is a highly learnable proficiency. The main idea behind this collection of exercises is that the art of writing can be broken down into a series of small, separate skills. Each time your students master a new skill, their confidence grows, and the next exercise then presents a challenge that feels interesting and possible.

For example?

Students practice energizing short, boring sentences by adding concrete details. They learn to maximize readers’ understanding by restating and explaining. They increase impact by tapping into their own senses – I see, I hear, I feel… They increase precision in descriptions by careful observation. They check the quality of their instructions through trial and error in the classroom. They learn to improve their own work with the help of checklists and classmates’ feedback. They become more critical of sources by working with facts and opinions in their own texts. And perhaps most importantly, your students learn to unlock their own creativity and enjoy writing in this series of guided writing situations where every effort is part of the learning process and every step forward is applauded.

40 exercises

Each book in the Write On series has 40 exercises, designed to help students:

• dare and want to write in English

• structure first phrases and sentences, then paragraphs and complete texts

• see what characterizes different kinds of texts

• develop different aspects of writing, including grammar, word choice, spelling, etc.

• give and use feedback – from classmates or the teacher

Find the exercises you need

Every exercise is described in detail in the book’s table of contents in order to make it easier for you to find what you are looking for. Although the exercises are presented in a logical progression, you are of course free to jump around

and choose exactly what each of your students needs. Maybe one task fits in with a theme you are working with. Another might encourage students to practice a grammar point you have just taught. However you choose an exercise, the focus is always on letting the students build on the skills they already have in order to reach the next level of proficiency.

Flexible solutions

Most of the exercises in Write On have word lists of helpful vocabulary. Some of them have grammar tips and challenging twists for more advanced students. Many of the tasks can be used by students in pairs or small groups.

Quite a few include feedback forms. All provide the structure and support that makes them easy to start – and easy to finish.

The exercises are in American English, but there are comments when British and American words differ in spelling.

To the teacher

In the section To the teacher, you will find tips on ways to dive more deeply into a subject and on ways to work with the whole class. Letting students read and give positive feedback on each other’s work, for example, is often appropriate and valuable.

We also give tips on which aspects of an exercise you might choose to give feedback on – because your response is important. When your feedback is positive, relevant, and focused on the next step of the journey, you’ll be able to feel momentum building in your students. And when you comment more on what went well and less on the details that went wrong, you’ll help your students develop a real sense of joy and accomplishment in being able to communicate better and better in written English.

Both printed and digital

It’s possible to export the digitally writeable exercises regardless of which platform you use. You can, in other words, copy the exercises in printed form for the students to write on, or let the students work with the exercises digitally.

Effektiv träning

Som med all träning är den träning som blir av den mest effektiva! Därför är övningarna i Write On relativt korta vilket gör att skrivträningen kan ske ofta och regelbundet. Eleven får skriva utifrån sina förutsättningar och det finns också möjlighet att gå vidare för den elev som så vill eller behöver. Målet med skrivträningen är att eleven ska kunna uttrycka vad hen vill säga och inte bara vad hen kan säga. Även om texten eleven producerar är begränsad i omfång, ska den ändå vara begriplig, läsvärd och anpassad till läsaren.

Skriva med självförtroende

Många elever utrycker att de inte kan skriva för de har inte någon fantasi eller kan inte komma på något att skriva om. Det kan vara ett uttryck för att de inte fått chansen att gradvis utveckla sin skrivförmåga och nu ställts inför en alltför omfattande uppgift. De tvivlar på sin förmåga att få ihop en längre text och uppgiften eller uppsatsen känns övermäktig. Då gäller det att bryta det tankesättet och steg för steg ge eleverna tillfällen att erfara att de visst kan lyckas. För att göra detta behövs väl avgränsade övningar med inbyggd stöttning och lagom utmaning. Det är det som kännetecknar övningarna i

40 övningar

Varje bok i Write On-serien har 40 övningar. Syftet med övningarna är att hjälpa eleven att:

• våga och vilja skriva texter på engelska.

• planera och strukturera sin text.

• uppmärksamma textens syfte.

• utveckla textens kvalité när det gäller till exempel grammatik och stavning.

• ge och få respons.

Övningarna finns presenterade i den detaljerade innehållsförteckningen. Ta hjälp av den när du ska välja övningar. Ordningen är vald med tanke på progression och variation men känn dig fri att välja övningar i den ordning som passar eleven och din undervisning. Övningarna kan ingå som en del av ett tema eller för att förstärka ett grammatikmoment, men framför allt fokuserar de på att ge eleverna möjlighet att på ett strukturerat sätt och med små steg träna på sitt skrivande. Till hjälp för eleven finns ibland en ordlista eller faktaoch grammatikunderlag i anslutning till övningen. Flera övningar leder också vidare till en paraktivitet.

Övningarna är skrivna på amerikansk engelska med kommentarer där det förekommer skillnader i stavningen mellan brittisk och amerikansk engelska.

To the teacher – fördjupning och respons

Under rubriken To the teacher får du tips på möjligheter till fördjupning och klassrumsgemensamma aktiviteter.

Här ger vi också förslag på vad du kan fokusera på i din respons. Det är viktigt att responsen du väljer att ge är positiv, relevant, konkret och framåtsyftande. Responsen ska inte fokusera på detaljer som hämmar viljan att öva. Det är också bra om du är tydlig med vad eleven kan vänta sig i form av respons och rättning. När ni fått igång skrivandet kan det vara både kul och nyttigt för eleverna att ta del av varandras texter då de utvecklas ytterligare genom att ge och få respons.

My Hero, Mr. Trevor

Another great thing about Mr. Trevor is that when you start to tell him something, he doesn’t just jump in right away and tell you what he thinks. He listens carefully and asks questions. Last summer, for instance, I was really worried because my grandmother was sick and in the hospital. I told him all about her, how I used to bake cookies with her and how she used to walk me home from school when I was little. I told him that I was scared she would die. And you know what? He didn’t say, “She’ll be fine,” because he didn’t know if she would be fine or not. He just listened and after a while I felt better, somehow.

The last thing that’s so special about Mr. Trevor is that he acts like a little kid sometimes, although he must be at least 70 years old. Last week he posted a selfie where he was wearing a silly hat and a fake mustache! I’ll have to ask where he got the fake mustache from. He likes social media, but he doesn’t always understand how to do things. Then he asks me and I can help him.

A VIP in my life is Mr. Trevor, my next-door neighbor. He is a wise person, a great listener, and an old man who still has the energy and curiosity of a little kid.

So, to summarize, these are a few things about Mr. Trevor that makes him one of my VIPs. I hope he’s around for many more years because I like him so much and because he makes me feel like a good person.

The first thing I really appreciate about Mr. Trevor is that he knows so much. When I was younger, I used to run over to his house all the time when I couldn’t do my math homework. He explained in a different way than my math teacher did, and it was easier to understand. He always had time to help me.

How to write an essay

1 Think of what you can write about. What is your main idea? Don’t start writing your essay until you know you have enough interesting things to say about your topic.

2 Think of three supporting ideas that help your reader understand your main idea. For example, if your main idea is that your VIP is your uncle, your three supporting ideas would be three reasons why your uncle is so important to you.

3 Write an introduction that tells your reader what the main idea is, and what your three supporting ideas are. (In my essay I’m going to tell you…)

4 Write the body of the essay. Three paragraphs are good. Use the ideas you wrote about in your introduction. Stick to the same order – your first supporting idea will be your first paragraph. Make sure each paragraph starts with a good topic sentence (telling what the paragraph will be about) and including examples and interesting details.

5 Write a summary that wraps everything up. It will be similar to the introduction, but you should use different words. (So this is how … So now you understand why …)
