Längst bak hittar du resurssidor med bl.a.

Welcome to Connect 2 !

foreword welcome to connect 2!

Take some time to explore Connect 2 fully, so you know everything you can work with. The Textbook is divided into 16 chapters, with reading texts, word lists and grammar pages. At the end of the book you will find extra pages including Tongue Twisters and a short and clear grammar section. You can read and listen to all of the texts in the digital material. The login information is on the inside front cover. The Workbook has exercises for every chapter, and you can write directly in the book. You will find a Plan and Log page for every chapter here, where you can plan your work and log (write down) what you have done. There are also pages where you can practice the vocabulary words from the Textbook. In the digital material you will find the audio for the listening exercises, as well as self-correcting exercises and the answer key to the exercises in the Workbook. In both the Textbook and the Workbook you will see different icons from time to time. They are there to show that there are digital exercises, or audio to an exercise in the Workbook, in the digital material. means that you should go to the digital material means that there is audio for the exercise in the digital material tips to succeed with your studies

• Set up concrete goals for your studies. What do you want to learn? What should you concentrate on just now? What will you manage to complete during a week, or a month? • Make a realistic plan that helps you to focus. • Stop every so often and reflect on what you’ve learned. That’s when you can see how much progress you are really making. The Plan and Log pages in the Workbook help you to plan and give you an overview of your work. • It is often better to study several times during the week, for a shorter period, than to study once for a long period. • If possible, study with others. It is both effective and more fun. You can also read this Foreword in Swedish on page 3. Welcome to Connect 2 !

World Wide English

Melbourne – the Sporting Capital of Australia Melbourne is the second largest city in Australia and is the capital of the state of Victoria. About 4 million people live there. It got its name in 1837 when it was named after the British Prime Minister at that time – Lord Melbourne. It grew rapidly with the gold rush in the early1850s and in 1956 became the first city in Australia to host the Olympic Games. Perhaps that’s why Melbourne is often called the ‘sporting capital of Australia,’ as it’s the home of Australian Rules Football, the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground, the Australian Open Tennis Championship, the Australian Grand Prix and the Melbourne Cup horse race. Melbourne is a really multicultural city with people living there from all over the world. Did you know that Melbourne is the third largest Greek city in the world? And it’s also often called ‘Little Italy’ because of the many Italians who live there. Although English is the main language, over a hundred others are spoken in Melbourne. After English, the most common languages are Mandarin, Italian, Greek and Vietnamese. Finally, Melbourne has been voted many times as one of the best cities in the world to live in. Would anybody like to move there? Do the exercise(s).

A Rags to Riches Story A penniless, 19-year-old Jewish man, who couldn’t read, write or speak a word of English, fled to Britain from Russia at the end of the 19th century and ended up with a billion pound empire. His name was Michael Marks and he arrived in London in 1882. From there, he went north to seek help and work with other Jewish people living in Leeds. He bought some buttons, wool, pins, needles, socks and stockings, stuffed them into a backpack and wandered around Yorkshire trying to sell them. After two years, Marks had set up a stall in Leeds market and nearby towns, still selling mainly buttons, cotton, wool and shoelaces. But this was when he came up with one of the most successful slogans ever:

DON’T ASK THE PRICE – IT’S A PENNY Ten years later, he met Tom Spencer, who became his partner. Spencer was a cashier who worked for a Leeds businessman and had once lent Marks £5 to get him started. Together they started Penny Stalls all over the north of England. Today there are over 885 branches of Marks & Spencer (M & S) all over the world – from London to Paris to Singapore to Hong Kong. It also has an international delivery service via its website to over 80 countries in the world! Marks’ original customers were mainly from the working-class. Today they include oil-rich Arabs, the British Prime Minister and lots of famous film stars. Even the late Princess Diana used to shop there.
