And we are beginning to hear the groaning from our tortured planet. We are at a point when we must realize that if we want to continue to call this planet our home, we need to change –not the planet, but ourselves.

Artificial Intelligence...

how far can we take it?

Artificial Intelligence, also known as AI is officially here. From replacing all kinds of jobs, along with facilitating the education of our kids, driving our cars, and including creating client presentations. We know that AI is quickly getting more and more sophisticated at diagnosing and giving us real-time information about our physical health. We’re expending enormous effort to make machines mimic humans. As Reid Hoffman, who has been a central figure in the development of AI stated, "a goal of AI should be using it to improve our lives by giving everyone a medical assistant and a tutor.” Well, Siri and I are good friends already, but the thought of taking it even further is really mind blowing. The question is: "Will there be anything AI can not answer?"

summer family adventure at Pismo Preserve!

Looking for a free outdoor activity the entire family can enjoy this summer? Why not head out to the Pismo Preserve for a nature hike?

The 900-acre park offers several trails ranging from easy to moderate, with durations of one to four hours to complete. Experience breathtaking ocean views as you walk the coastal ridgelines. Take your time to stop and listen to the abundance of birds. See if you can snap a photo of a lizard scuttling along the path as you wander under a canopy of oak trees, and hike through open meadows full of wild flowers. Pack your lunch as there are plenty of benches and picnic tables along the trails. Make sure to wear

sunscreen, and bring water to drink. Dog are allowed too, as long as they are on a leash. Oh, and watch out for rattlesnakes! Parking is at the base of the park at 80 Mattie Road in Pismo Beach, where you will find a clean bathroom as well as trail maps. Besides hiking, the Pismo Preserve is open to horseback riding, mountain biking, birding and running. You can even join a docent-led hike. So put on your hiking boots or grab your bicycles and treat the family to a day of adventure at this remarkable gem that we have right here on the Central Coast.

what do Doulas do? Health News

Congratulations, you’re pregnant! This is happy news for women wanting a family, but it can be a stressful time. The journey of pregnancy and childbirth may be a healthier and happier one with the help of a doula. A doula is a person who assists a mother through labor and delivery by providing physical and emotional support and information. A doula acts as an advocate for mothers and empowers them to take control of the birthing process.

The origin of doulas can be traced back to ancient Greece, where women supported each other during childbirth. Doula services gained popularity in the 1970’s and have grown into a large network of trained professionals

serving communities throughout the world. Doulas will nurture, support and offer expert guidance for families during pregnancy, birth and the early postpartum time. There is evidence that shows how birth doulas improve outcomes. According to a study conducted by eClinical Medicine, part of The Lancet, women who received doula care had a 52.9% lower odds of cesarean delivery and 57.5% lower odds of postpartum depression. A professional certified birth doula is trained in five competencies: physiology of childbirth; common interventions and evidence based care; comfort measures for childbirth; breastfeeding and communicating with medical care providers. Doulas can also be trained to provide postpartum care. It’s now easier to access doula services in California. At the beginning of 2023, the Department of Health Care Services, added doula services as a covered benefit under its Medi-Cal program.

the benefits of Breastfeeding for Women

The benefits of breastfeeding for baby and mother are quite extensive. For the baby, breast milk is the perfect blend of nutrition for healthy growth and development. It's loaded with antibodies that help babies fight off viruses and bacteria. Studies show a lower risk of diseases like asthma, type1 diabetes and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. There is also evidence that breastfeeding improves cognitive performance. It is virtually free; it is ready, portable, convenient and promotes a special bond between mother and baby. Breastfeeding provides many benefits to a mother. It produces the hormone oxytocin which helps the uterus contract after delivery and return to its normal size. Studies show that women who breastfed, have a lower risk of breast and ovarian cancer and a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. When mothers need support with breastfeeding, doulas and lactation consultants can help.

Potato Salad with green beans and shallot dijon vinaigrette

Ingredients: 1 bag of baby red potatoes, washed and cut in half / 1 cup of blanched green beans, cut in to thirds / 1 bunch fresh dill, chopped fine / 1 bunch fresh chives, chopped fine/salt and pepper to taste.

Dressing: ¼ cup olive oil / 2 tbsp Dijon mustard / 1-2 shallots, minced / 1-2 tb red or white wine vinegar / salt and pepper to taste / 1-2 tsp garlic or onion powder. Boil potatoes for 15-20 min or until fork tender, remove from boiling water and put into a large bowl.

Refrigerate until ready to serve. Blanch the green beans by dropping them in boiling water for 30 seconds to 1 minute or just until bright green and still crunchy. Immediately transfer to ice bath and allow to cool. Once cooled completely, add to bowl of potatoes. Make dressing in separate container and whisk until smooth. To assemble salad, toss green beans and potatoes with salt, pepper, and fresh herbs. Pour over dressing and toss to combine. Serve as a great side dish with BBQ or as a simple easy lunch salad!

Environmental Tips to Make You...

We are all feeling it. Eco-anxiety, climate doom, and environmental existential dread. As a green publication, we see these terms used a lot, and in fact often feel the same way ourselves. The media has a huge part to play in combating climate doom. It's our job to be truthful, not trying to downplay the severity of the situation. We also feel it's our job to show that there is hope. Here's some information filled with promise that will make you smile:

1) Renewable energy is on track to produce more energy than coal in the US this year. According to figures from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), more than a fifth of all electricity by the end of 2022 will come from hydropower, wind and solar. That is higher than coal at 20 per cent and nuclear at 19 per cent.

2) The European Union has announced a deal to impose a carbon dioxide

tariff on imports of polluting goods such as steel and cement. Known as the "Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism" (CBAM), the agreement will cover industrial imports from the bloc's 27 member states, targeting the highest polluting products first.

3) Your electronics could soon be powered by an ultra cheap sea salt battery. Researchers have built a new cheap battery with four times the energy storage capacity of lithium. Constructed from sodium-sulfur, a type of molten salt that can be processed from sea water, the battery is low-cost and more environmentally friendly than existing options.

4) France has been given the green light to ban short haul domestic flights. The European Commission has approved the move which will abolish flights between cities that are linked by a train journey of less than 2.5 hours. The changes are part of the country’s 2021 Climate Law and were first proposed by France's Citizens' Convention on Climate, a

Innerbloom offers Ketamine Treatment s for positive change by

I started Innerbloom Ketamine Therapy last year because I had learned firsthand how this powerful medicine can safely and effectively treat pain, depression, anxiety, PTSD, and more. Ketamine is a decades-old, FDA-approved drugz which has few (if any) side effects when properly administered by licensed medical professionals. Ketamine therapy can accelerate positive change, especially when combined with proper preparation and integration. Preparation means establishing a proper mindset, while ensuring your setting is conducive for the most healing potential. Integration means incorporating insights from your ketamine experience into your everyday life and making changes for lasting positive effects. Reinterpret past events from a safe distance. Self-reflect. Create new thought patterns. Build healthy habits. We are proud to collaborate with local licensed therapists experienced with ketamine-assisted psychotherapy. Like an expert travel guide, a licensed therapist will help you get the most from your experience by leading you through preparation and integration. Like Biking?

SLO is the place to go!

As a bicycle-friendly community, the City of San Luis Obispo is leaving a positive footprint on the environment by encouraging commuters to shift from motor vehicles to bicycles, reducing the number of vehicle trips and miles traveled in the community, reducing traffic congestion and improving air quality. Cycling also raises your heart rate, gets the blood pumping, and burns calories too. Bicyclists share streets with motorists, and sufficient space will be reserved for their passage. For tourists and residents alike, the careful location and design of off-street paths allow them to appreciate unique community features. Once at their destinations, bicyclists will find convenient and secure places to park. SLO was designated a Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists in 2007 and was recognized at a GOLD level in 2015. This is largely in part to its extensive bicycle network which includes over 75 miles of bike paths, bike lanes, and on-street facilities as well as over 150 secured bicycle parking spaces. It also reported that cycling traffic after the pandemic began in 2020 increased by 50% from the same time the previous year in New York City and that several metro areas modified traffic patterns and opened more miles of roads to accommodate bikers and pedestrians.

As far as landscapes go, the bike trails in San Luis Obispo offer a little bit of everything, from volcanic plugs to city scapes.

Leather from Cactus?

saving animals and the environment!

Leather has a long and troubled past. The toxins used to tan the leather are often under fire as well as the treatment of animals. As one of the world's most traded products, leather is part of a booming $80 billion industry. But, its use of animal products and harsh chemicals makes leather problematic not only for animal rights activists but environmentalists. Vegan leather made from cacti can be used to create anything from wallets to shoes.

Currently, Desserto is the only manufacturer of cactus leather. The farming practices are certified organic and use only rainfall to water the crops mitigating the use of excess water. The process is energy efficient, using the sun to dry the cactus mulch versus other mechanical methods. The

company uses a bio-polymer, which is partially made from organic renewable compounds. The dyes used to color the fabric are also organic. There is a byproduct, but Desserto makes sure the waste from the process is used. Most of it is used for animal feed, but it can be used in many other ways. The cactus, nopal (Opuntia ficus-indica), is known for its rugged, thick skin, which makes it the perfect texture to simulate animal leather. The idea of using nopal was conceived because this plant does not need any water to grow, and there is plenty of it throughout the Mexican Republic. Cactus leather appears to have a bright future ahead. Not only can growing cactus help the carbon emissions but the plant can be used in a multitude of ways.

Summer Support

3 ayurvedic tips

Summer is here! In Ayurveda, each season is governed by an element, and summer is the element of fire. You may notice some imbalances such as overheating, more irritable, red skin, and burning indigestion (heartburn, diarrhea). Balance in Ayurveda rests on the simple yet profound principle that like increases like and opposites decrease each other. Here are 3 Ayurvedic Tips to help you maintain your cool!

1) Eat cooling foods and stay away from hot spicy foods. Favor foods like cucumber, zucchini, celery, asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, leafy greens, watermelon, melon, peaches, berries, cilantro, mint, dill, basmati rice, quinoa, and oats.

2) Cool the mind. If you are more impatient than usual, favor mindful activities like meditation, yoga, tai chi, and chi gong. 3) Take cool showers; avoid excess heat and steaming. Avoid excessive steaming, hot yoga classes, or saunas during the summer, and favor frequent cool showers and swimming in the ocean/river/pool. Try cooling and sweet oils like sandalwood, rose, and jasmine for calming aromatherapy.

Understanding quantum Biofeedback

Quantum Biofeedback is a special type of biofeedback that relies on the principles of quantum physics. Compared to conventional biofeedback, in which a person is trained to become aware of a normal bodily function, such as heart rhythm or brain waves or blood pressure, so that they can learn to control these functions consciously, quantum biofeedback contains these sorts of therapies also, and much more.

Using quantum biofeedback, the electro-magnetic level of functioning (which is the level where all change starts) can be monitored and treated electromagnetically. All sorts of information can be discovered about a person, and then their current functioning can be improved, noninvasively, to optimize their health. This therapy is individualized to that particular patient at that particular point in time. In conventional medicine, the only organs that are often monitored

at the electromagnetic level are the heart (with the EKG machine) and the brain (with the EEG machine) but the entire body is electromagnetic. And one can monitor and treat the body electric using quantum biofeedback.

What kinds of information can be gathered and what kinds of therapies are available on quantum biofeedback machines? Nutritional assessment, stress reduction, hormonal status, emotional therapies, homeopathic remedies, organ energy balancing, allergy assessment and treatment, toxin and germ identification, detoxification and "zapping" pathogens. And because of the principle of "quantum entanglement," assessment and therapy can even be done remotely. Now that's what I'd call real modern day "medicine!"

be a guardian for

Bees!

I’ve been very interested in bees lately, and really, everyone should “bee!" While the most obvious product of bees is their delicious honey, it’s their industrious pollination work that keeps us alive.

There are several thousand types of bee species, but it’s estimated that honey bees alone are responsible for pollinating 80% of all flowering plants. Plants such as vegetables, fruits, nuts … in other words – FOOD!

Bees face a myriad of natural threats such as disease, predators, and weather. Most of the other perils come from humans: climate change, pesticide use, and loss of habitat.

Obviously, not everyone can be beekeepers, but most of us can act as bee guardians. The Bee Conservancy lists 10 ways on their website, including planting a bee garden and eliminating the use of pesticides.

Another way to help bees is to relax if one starts flying around you. Unless you’re actively annoying the bee or its hive, it’s probably just checking you out. Of course, aggressive bee species are another story, as are people allergic to stings, but most of us can just gently wave the bee away and get on with our day.

Also, don’t panic if you encounter a bee swarm. Essentially, they’re looking for new digs, and will usually move on in a timely manner.

If the swarm or the newly settled hive is too close for comfort, DO NOT reach for poison! Check your local apiary resources for beekeepers that do swarm removal. You’ll not only be helping out the bees, you’ll be finding the beekeeper a new hive.

Street Smart? adapting to climate change

By 2050, the number of cars on the road is expected to total three billion. And with most of the world’s population expected to live in urban cities by then, there will be a growing demand for smart streets. Our roads will have to innovate, much like the cars themselves. By 2050, roughly half of cars on the road will be electric. The transition from gas to electric vehicles will mean an increased demand for charging infrastructure. One of the companies at the forefront of wireless transfer charging, a German tech startup group, is developing power transfer pads made from recycled materials to integrate into the road’s surface. These electrified street lanes will theoretically allow electric vehicles to charge as they drive. In addition to charging as they drive, the surface pressure of cars could also serve as a source of renewable energy.

Smart street technology of the future will also have to battle the effects of climate change. Heat gets trapped between buildings and is exacerbated by pollution, creating what is called the urban heat island effect. The Cool Pavement Pilot Program is one way of fighting rising temperatures in one of the United States’ hottest urban environments. The process involves spraying a water-based asphalt treatment on top of existing pavement. Modular or “jigsaw” roads are designed to be quickly disassembled and reassembled like puzzle pieces. The mobile nature of jigsaw roads will allow cities to adapt quickly to traffic patterns, construction needs, or emergencies. Thanks to a company in the Netherlands, they are already being used as bike and foot paths there and in Belgium.

Working from Home... healthier work-life

When you think of wellness, chances are that you don't envision yourself at work. More often than not, our jobs are a source of anxiety. This has led to a growing conversation around the importance of work-life balance, or, the ability to equally prioritize the needs of both your job and your personal life. Work-life balance came to the fore during COVID-19, especially as many companies moved to remote or hybrid work models.

According to McKinsey & Company, 58% of Americans are able to

work from home at least one day per week. And as remote work has become more normalized, it has shown signs of presenting better balance, improved mental health, and an overall shift away from the mindset of the corporate grind. A survey from Cisco reveals that nearly 79% of respondents feel that working remotely has improved their work-life balance. Through 2023, this wellness trend is expected to continue. As LinkedIn points out, more than 97% of remote employees indicate that they want to continue working remotely for the rest of their careers.

Less is More... Becoming a

The term minimalist is becoming quite popular. There are even Netflix movies and lots of videos on YouTube if you want to find out more about it. Surveys show that the average American spends thousands of dollars on unnecessary purchases. As you review your budget, you may be able to cut out a large portion of these expenses. The definition of a minimalist lifestyle is removing the unnecessary things in life to focus on the essential. It's the practice of living with the things that you need and nothing more. This can apply to your home, work, wardrobe, finances, possessions, or simply your mindset. Minimalism doesn’t mean you never go shopping, it just means you’re more intentional with your purchases. Whether you’re in need of a new pair of running shoes or work pants, invest in quality pieces that will last you a long time.

This is not a new concept. Followers of the Ancient Greek philosophy who

reasoned people can be happier by aligning themselves more closely with nature and rejecting all mainstream desires (fame, wealth, power, sex, etc.). Though it has evolved in modern times, early believers in the mystical Islamic ideal of Sufism only wore a rough wool robe (as the name implies) and intensified their devotion through a strict life of modesty and selflessness.

Minimalist!

A community of monks and nuns in India, the Jains completely detach from social and secular activities (e.g. no contact with family, no use of electricity, etc.) to purify and discipline themselves and gain self-realization.

One of the most important parts of minimalism is cutting down on things you don’t need. To start decluttering, identify what serves a purpose in your life and what doesn’t. Consider what products could be reused. Take time to assess your current spending habits and then consistently review them. Always cut out things that take up space or events that drain your energy. Letting go of things you can’t control may seem easier said than done. To find that balance, start by focusing on things you love to do or have. Once you have narrowed down what’s most important to you, focus your energy on that. Being thankful for what you do have may even cut down on your budget. You

may find yourself reusing what you do have rather than wanting more. You may even swap a vacation across the county for a staycation in the comfort of your backyard.

Make a list of all the things that make you happy (that you can easily do without much money, time, or energy). Then commit to only doing what’s on that list. This exercise will teach you that happiness is always within your reach. Check out the Pareto Principle because its application can be lifechanging. In terms of minimalism, you can view the rule as: of all the things you have and do only a few contribute significant value and meaning. Focus on those things over all others. Rumi sums it up beautifully: “Try not to resist the changes that come your way. Instead let life live through you. And do not worry that your life is turning upside down. How do you know that the side you are used to is better than the one to come?”

Artificial Intelligence and global warming...

Even if you aren't into artificial intelligence, it's time to pay attention. Can AI (artificial intelligence) aid in lot of issues, including pollution? Yes! Resolving sustainability challenges is difficult. The introduction and evolution of AI has made it possible. Here are a few ways it may help:

1) AI-optimized models can offer other strategies for protecting biodiversity.

2) It can decrease energy consumption and avoid electricity waste by monitoring energy usage. 3) AI provides effective approaches to water pollution and scarcity.

4) AI has the potential to create more environmentally sustainable transportation networks.

5) AI can uncover undiscovered

patterns in manufacturing processes or operations.

6) It can find ways to minimize air pollution and improve its quality.

7) AI can monitor and enhance overall harvest quality and accuracy.

8) It can forecast extreme weather events and natural disasters, allowing for proactive measures to be taken more quickly.

9) Invasive species can be monitored, identified, tracked, and their presence eliminated using AI.

It may be important not only for the environment, but for helping achieve many sustainable goals. AI offers unprecedented opportunities and will have a huge impact on humanity’s future. Better regulatory agencies are needed however to monitor its use. We are all watching!

Acupuncture is a form of health maintenance, which stimulates the body’s ability to correct and balance itself. Based on the ancient Chinese practice of using "punctures" to cure the body of disease and relieve pain. This process is used to channel the chi life force throughout the body by a network of meridians in a continuous flow. Disease is considered to be an imbalanced meridian system, and "needles" are inserted at various points along the meridians to stimulate or disperse the life-force flow to correct the imbalance.

Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that uses liquid plant materials, known as essential oils (EOs), and other aromatic compounds from plants for the purpose of affecting a person’s mood or health. Essential oils differ in chemical composition from other herbal products because the distillation process only recovers the lighter phytomolecules. Aromatherapy is a generic term that refers to any of the various traditions that make use of essential oils sometimes in combination with other alternative medical practices and beliefs.

Ayurveda is an ancient holistic science from India. Said to be more than 5,000 years old, "Ayur" means life and "Ved" means knowledge. Ayurveda is the study of longevity that offers healing, rejuvenation, and selfactualizing therapies utilizing diet, exercise, yoga, herbs, massage, aromas, meditation, mantras and tantras. Ayurveda tradition

teaches that health is the balance of elements fire, air, water and earth – and illness is an excess of an element.

Biofeedback involves noninvasive, simple electronic monitoring to observe the body’s functions and provide information useful to the healing processes, especially with stress. Using biofeedback information, guided relaxation techniques allow awareness and methods to control particular body reactions. Treatments may address anxiety, pain, migraines, insomnia, muscle spasms, asthma and other stress-related disorders.

CBD Oil is a popular natural remedy used for many common ailments. Studies have shown that CBD may help reduce chronic pain and inflammation. CBD oil has shown promise as a more natural way to alleviate depression and anxiety. It may help reduce symptoms related to side effects related to cancer treatment and recent research has linked CBD with several benefits for the heart and circulatory system.

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a system of evaluation and treatment which views the client as an integrated totality and uses gentle, noninvasive techniques to the craniosacral system surrounding the brain and the spinal cord.

Doulas can trace its origin back to ancient Greece, where women supported each other during childbirth. A doula is a person who assists a mother through labor and delivery by providing physical and emotional support and information. A doula acts as an advocate for mothers and empowers them to take control of the birthing process. Doulas will nurture, support and offer expert guidance for families during pregnancy, birth and the early postpartum time.

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) consists of fingertip tapping on meridian points. EFT alleviates negative emotions and experiences. Clinical psychologists David Feinstein and Dawson Church, award winning author, The Genie in Your Genes, confirmed through their landmark study tapping on specific meridian points has a positive effect on cortisol levels, the “stress hormone.” Research suggests EFT is effective because it helps to balance the activity of the parasympathetic and sympathetic regions of the brain, making it a powerful healing tool.

Herbalists practice ancient healing procedures by using plants, and their derivatives, as preventative and curative medicine. Whole herbs retain their subtle ingredients needed to balance the body to catalyst the healing process, without harmful side effects of synthetic drugs. Herbs are used for internal and external treatments using teas, ointments, oils, compresses, tinctures, and extracts.

Homeopathy is a holistic therapy developed in Germany over 200 years ago by physician, Samuel Hahnemann. Homeopathy is based upon the belief that “like cures like,” and uses small doses of natural remedies created from herbal, mineral and animal substances.

Meditation is the deep relaxation of the body to heal the body, quiet the mind, and provide the client with a sense of inner balance. Meditation can be a state of focused or mindful attention, which can include the use of sitting posture, imagery, mantras, control of breath, and observation – all to allow thoughts to emerge and pass without becoming engaged with them.

Osteopathy is a form of drug-free noninvasive manual medicine that focuses on total body health by treating and strengthening the musculoskeletal framework, which includes the joints, muscles and spine. Its aim is to positively affect the body's nervous, circulatory and lymphatic systems.

Reiki means universal life-force energy, and is a scientific way to activate and balance the life-force energy (chi, prana, qi) present in all living things. One method used is light handplacement therapy that is used to channel energy to organs and glands.

Reflexology or zone therapy, is the practice of massaging, squeezing, or pushing on parts of the feet, or sometimes the hands and ears, with the goal of encouraging a beneficial effect on other parts of the body, or to improve general health.

Sound Vibration Therapy is based on the fact that the universe is in a constant state of vibration; therefore, the body’s cells are constantly vibrating. Sound vibration therapy employs the direct application of the voice, music, and other sounds.
