summer family adventure at Pismo Preserve!
by Diane Parnell
Looking for a free outdoor activity the entire family can enjoy this summer? Why not head out to the Pismo Preserve for a nature hike?
The 900-acre park offers several trails ranging from easy to moderate, with durations of one to four hours to complete. Experience breathtaking ocean views as you walk the coastal ridgelines. Take your time to stop and listen to the abundance of birds. See if you can snap a photo of a lizard scuttling along the path as you wander under a canopy of oak trees, and hike through open meadows full of wild flowers. Pack your lunch as there are plenty of benches and picnic tables along the trails. Make sure to wear sunscreen, and bring water to drink. Dog are allowed too, as long as they are on a leash. Oh, and watch out for rattlesnakes! Parking is at the base of the park at 80 Mattie Road in Pismo Beach, where you will find a clean bathroom as well as trail maps. Besides hiking, the Pismo Preserve is open to horseback riding, mountain biking, birding and running. You can even join a docent-led hike. So put on your hiking boots or grab your bicycles and treat the family to a day of adventure at this remarkable gem that we have right here on the Central Coast.
