the benefits of Breastfeeding for Women
by Madeline Palaszewski
The benefits of breastfeeding for baby and mother are quite extensive. For the baby, breast milk is the perfect blend of nutrition for healthy growth and development. It's loaded with antibodies that help babies fight off viruses and bacteria. Studies show a lower risk of diseases like asthma, type1 diabetes and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. There is also evidence that breastfeeding improves cognitive performance. It is virtually free; it is ready, portable, convenient and promotes a special bond between mother and baby. Breastfeeding provides many benefits to a mother. It produces the hormone oxytocin which helps the uterus contract after delivery and return to its normal size. Studies show that women who breastfed, have a lower risk of breast and ovarian cancer and a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. When mothers need support with breastfeeding, doulas and lactation consultants can help.
