The term minimalist is becoming quite popular. There are even Netflix movies and lots of videos on YouTube if you want to find out more about it. Surveys show that the average American spends thousands of dollars on unnecessary purchases. As you review your budget, you may be able to cut out a large portion of these expenses. The definition of a minimalist lifestyle is removing the unnecessary things in life to focus on the essential. It's the practice of living with the things that you need and nothing more. This can apply to your home, work, wardrobe, finances, possessions, or simply your mindset. Minimalism doesn’t mean you never go shopping, it just means you’re more intentional with your purchases. Whether you’re in need of a new pair of running shoes or work pants, invest in quality pieces that will last you a long time.

This is not a new concept. Followers of the Ancient Greek philosophy who reasoned people can be happier by aligning themselves more closely with nature and rejecting all mainstream desires (fame, wealth, power, sex, etc.). Though it has evolved in modern times, early believers in the mystical Islamic ideal of Sufism only wore a rough wool robe (as the name implies) and intensified their devotion through a strict life of modesty and selflessness.
