DISTRICT NEWS
Dear Residents,
With the holidays behind us and Spring right around the corner, it’s time to focus on cleaning and organizing areas within the Clubhouse and the property. Our Maintenance staff spent a full day cleaning around the golf maintenance shed so that our landscaper can begin to improve that area with fresh plantings of shrubs and sod.
Walker Awning will begin replacing the old awnings at the Satellite Pools with new colorful vinyl that should last another 10-15 years or more. We’ll do one satellite at a time, probably one a month, until completed.
I’ll be working with our Maintenance staff to transform the two “ugly” planters by the main pool into something beautiful and interesting for residents to enjoy. The pool deck has been pressure washed and we’ve put the newly strapped chairs and lounges on a cleaning schedule.

Black velvet drapes have been purchased for the Ballroom, and hopefully they have been hung by the time of this publication. They should dramatically improve the look of the stage.
Behind the scenes, internal storage improvements for the Clubhouse were made by use of our existing Theater dressing rooms. We’ve passed city inspections of our fire alarm monitoring system, adding upgrades to our fire alarm and security systems. We have also engaged a local professional artist to create some beautiful murals on some walls of the Clubhouse. We’re concentrating on exterior spaces right now and may decide to do more later.
Finally, the City of Sunrise Police department will be holding a seminar on Tuesday March 11th on how Residents can safeguard themselves from fraud and scams so prevalent now. Snacks will be served.
MARDI GRAS
Mardi Gras, the festive day celebrated in France on Shrove Tuesday (the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday), marks the close of the pre-Lenten season. The French name Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday, from the custom of using all the fats in the home before Lent in preparation for fasting and abstinence.
In the United States the principal Carnival celebration is in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Carnival season there opens on Twelfth Night (also called Epiphany, which is observed on January 6) and climaxes with the Mardi Gras festivities commencing 10 days before Shrove Tuesday. This period is filled with citywide revelry and elaborate parades, both day and night, building up to Mardi Gras and the Rex parade. Beads of gold, green, and purple (representing power, faith, and justice, respectively) are commonly distributed, and the eating of king cake is an iconic part of the celebration.
Carnival, the merrymaking and festivity that takes place in many Roman Catholic countries in the last days and hours before the Lenten season. The derivation of the word is uncertain, though it possibly can be traced to the medieval Latin carnem levare or carnelevarium, which means to take away or remove meat. This coincides with the fact that Carnival is the final festivity before the commencement of the austere 40 days of Lent, during which Roman Catholics in earlier times fasted, abstained from eating meat, and followed other ascetic practices. The historical origin of Carnival is also obscure. It possibly has its roots in a primitive festival honouring the beginning of the new year and the rebirth of nature, though it is also possible that the beginnings of Carnival in Italy may be linked to the pagan Saturnalian festival of ancient Rome.
The first day of Carnival varies with both national and local traditions. Thus, in Munich in Bavaria the Carnival season, there called Fasching, begins on the feast of the Epiphany (January 6), while in Cologne in the Rhineland it begins on November 11 at 11:11 am (11th month, day, hour, and minute). In France the celebration is restricted to Shrove Tuesday (the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday) and to mi-carème (the Thursday of the third week of Lent). The commencement date is Quinquagesima Sunday (the Sunday before Ash Wednesday), and the termination is Shrove Tuesday. In some parts of Spain, Ash Wednesday also is included in the Carnival celebrations, an observance that stems from a time when Ash Wednesday was not an integral part of Lent.
In earlier times Rome was most conspicuous as the centre of Carnival activity, and the splendour and richness of the festivity that marked its observance there were scarcely surpassed elsewhere. Today, in a popular Carnival parade in Einsiedeln, Switzerland, demon masks are worn and large bells clanged to drive out evil spirits and to announce the end of winter on the eve of Lent and spring. In its long history Carnival has played a significant role in the development of popular theatre, vernacular song, and folk dances.
In the United States the principal Carnival celebration is in New Orleans, where the Carnival season opens on Twelfth Night (January 6) and climaxes with the Mardi Gras festivities commencing 10 days before Shrove Tuesday. The French name Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday, from the custom of using all the fats in the home before Lent. In Italy, Venice became a gathering place for traditionally disguised Carnival revelers. The most famous modern Carnival is perhaps that of Rio de Janeiro. Masked balls, elaborate costumes, parades, and various other festivities mark such celebrations.
THE TRADITION OF THE KING CAKE
The King Cake is believed to have originated in France around the 12th century. These early Europeans celebrated the coming of the three wise men bearing gifts twelve days after Christmas calling it the Feast of the epiphany, Twelfth Night, or King’s Day.
The main part of the celebration was the baking of a King’s Cake to honor the three Kings. The cakes were made circular to portray the circular route used by the kings to get to the Christ Child, which was taken to confuse King Herod who was trying to follow the wise men so he could kill the Christ Child. In these early King Cakes a bean, pea, or coin was hidden inside the cake. The person who got the hidden piece was declared King for the day or was said to have good luck in the coming year.
In Louisiana, Twelfth Night also signifies the beginning of the carnival season which ends with Mardi Gras Day. The bean, pea and the coin have been replaced by a small plastic baby to symbolize the Christ Child. The person who gets the baby is expected to carry on the carnival festivities by hosting the next King Cake party.

Weight Loss in Seniors
Catherine used to look forward to homemade lasagna every Sunday. The savory profile balanced with the fresh herbs, melted cheese and sweet tomato sauce reminded her of family dinners she had prepared throughout the decades. Now, however, lasagna tastes dull, and it’s lost its appeal. Eventually, Catherine finds herself only stomaching a few bites of each meal, so she’s lost a lot of weight unintentionally.
Many seniors go through something similar. Some researchers believe that as many as one-third of seniors experience loss of appetite, and this number may be higher for older adults living in senior care facilities.
Some weight loss or decreased appetite can be a normal part of the aging process. Unintentional weight loss in older adults can be caused by various factors, including medical conditions, medications and social or emotional challenges, and should be evaluated by a medical professional.
To encourage increased appetite and weight gain in older adults, establish mealtime routines, make food more accessible and enhance the flavors of meals using herbs and spices.
Why Do Elderly People Stop Eating?
To a degree, loss of appetite in healthy older adults can be normal. The aging process causes a few changes that lead to decreased appetite, which is why many older adults stop eating. These changes include decreased muscle mass and bone density, reduction in physical activity, mental health conditions such as depression, swallowing or chewing issues, and others.
Progressive weight loss in older adults can have serious medical consequences. “It can even increase mortality,” says Dr. Naushira Pandya, a professor and chair for the department of geriatrics at Nova Southeastern University’s Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine in Florida.
Tips for
How to Get the Elderly to Eat
Encouraging older adults to eat more can be tricky in the face of chronic conditions and the natural aging process. However, there are some simple adjustments you can make for mealtime to be more enjoyable and beneficial.
• Stimulate weight gain
If your loved one has recently lost weight, there are some ways you can naturally stimulate weight gain. If the problem seems severe, a medical professional may advise an older adult to take meal replacements, such as nutritional supplement drinks.
• Establish a mealtime routine
Ensure older adults have companionship during meals.
• Make food more appealing
Squeeze fresh lemon or lime juice onto pasta or veggies, or add a dash of vinegar, such as balsamic or red wine vinegar. A touch of acid brings out sweetness and makes flavors more interesting.
• Bring back color to your plate
Having a variety of colors not only makes a meal look more inviting and exciting, but can offer a wealth of nutrients. Use herbs as much as possible. Fresh or dried herbs and spices are great flavor enhancers. Ginger, garlic or onions can liven up a dish, as well as herbs such as thyme, sage, basil, or rosemary.
