DISTRICT NEWS
Dear Residents,
Spring is in the air and we are busy with the day to day cleaning and mainte-nance of the Clubhouse and our grounds. Some of the projects include making our Ballroom and Theater more function-al for shows and events. We work hard to ensure the lighting and sound are great so Residents and guests have a memorable experience. Other projects will help extend the life of our facilities, including re-surfacing the pool at Satellite 2 and working with State and County agencies to renew our 5-year certification for storm water drainage management.
Premier Fire and the City of Sunrise have completed a 2-year project to improve and enhance our fire alarm system. Bringing the Clubhouse up to code for Life Safety was a huge effort but very much needed. We’ve recently started to install Wi-Fi thermostats in the main Clubhouse and Satellites to help manage temperatures better and reduce our overall electricity consumption.
We’re working with our pool company, Better Pool & Spa Services, to replace our aging VAK-PAK’s that house and protect our pool equipment. COD Asphalt, who re-paved our parking lot is pulling permits to repair a section of sidewalk between holes #6 & #7. That work will hopefully be completed by the end of April. Walker Awning is working to replace the awnings at Satellite 5 and may be finished by the time of this publication. We plan to replace the awnings of the other Satellites as well, doing one a month. Finally, we’re collaborating with a local artist, Skyler Jade Nador, to paint some murals in strategic locations in and around the Clubhouse and main pool areas. After interviewing other artists, we really liked her work and style. She listened to what we wanted and helped us to visualize how it would look. We wanted it to be subtle but fun and we can’t wait to see the final product. You can see examples her work at www.colorbysky.art

APRIL FOOLS’ DAY
April Fools’ Day—occurring on April 1 each year—has been celebrated for several centuries by different cultures, though its exact origins remain a mystery. April Fools’ Day traditions include playing hoaxes or practical jokes on others, often yelling “April Fools!” at the end to clue in the subject of the April Fools’ Day prank. While its exact history is shrouded in mystery, the embrace of April Fools’ Day jokes by the media and major brands has ensured the unofficial holiday’s long life.
Some historians speculate that April Fools’ Day dates back to 1582, when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar, as called for by the Council of Trent in 1563. In the Julian Calendar, as in the Hindu calendar, the new year began with the spring equinox around April 1.
People who were slow to get the news or failed to recognize that the start of the new year had moved to January 1 and continued to celebrate it during the last week of March through April 1 became the butt of jokes and hoaxes and were called “April fools.” These pranks included having paper fish placed on their backs and being referred to as “poisson d’avril” (April fish), said to symbolize a young, easily caught fish and a gullible person.
Hilaria in Ancient Rome
Historians have also linked April Fools’ Day to festivals such as Hilaria (Latin for joyful), which was celebrated in ancient Rome at the end of March by followers of the cult of Cybele. It involved people dressing up in disguises and mocking fellow citizens and even magistrates and was said to be inspired by the Egyptian legend of Isis, Osiris and Seth. There’s also speculation that April Fools’ Day was tied to the vernal equinox, or first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, when Mother Nature fooled people with changing, unpredictable weather.
History of April Fools’ Day
April Fools’ Day spread throughout Britain in the 18th century. In Scotland, the tradition became a two-day event, starting with “hunting the gowk,” in which people were sent on phony errands (gowk is a word for cuckoo bird, a symbol for fool) and followed by Tailie Day, which involved pranks played on people’s derrieres, such as pinning fake tails or “kick me” signs on them.
April Fools’ Day Pranks
In modern times, people have gone to great lengths to create elaborate April Fools’ Day hoaxes. Newspapers, radio and TV stations and websites have participated in the April 1 tradition of reporting outrageous fictional claims that have fooled their audiences.
In 1957, the BBC reported that Swiss farmers were experiencing a record spaghetti crop and showed footage of people harvesting noodles from trees. In 1985, Sports Illustrated writer George Plimpton tricked many readers when he ran a made-up article about a rookie pitcher named Sidd Finch who could throw a fastball over 168 miles per hour.
In 1992, NPR ran a spot with former President Richard Nixon saying he was running for president again…only it was an actor, not Nixon, and the segment was all an April Fools’ Day prank that caught the country by surprise
In 1996, Taco Bell, the fast-food restaurant chain, duped people when it announced it had agreed to purchase Philadelphia’s Liberty Bell and intended to rename it the Taco Liberty Bell. In 1998, after Burger King advertised a “Left-Handed Whopper,” scores of clueless customers requested the fake sandwich. Google notoriously hosts an annual April Fools’ Day prank that has included everything from “telepathic search” to the ability to play Pac Man on Google Maps.
For the average trickster, there is always the classic April Fools’ Day prank of covering the toilet with plastic wrap or swapping the contents of sugar and salt containers.

A Positive Outlook on Aging is Linked to Feeling Sharper Mentally, Says New Study
Your attitudes about aging, whether positive or negative, can lead to a better—or worse—cognitive experience in your senior years, suggests a new study from researchers at Penn State. Getting older comes with certain expectations, from gray hair to wrinkles to forgetfulness. While these beliefs may seem harmless, they may influence how one perceives their own cognitive abilities while they age. The team found that people who had more positive expectations of aging tended to report less frequent cognitive problems, such as difficulty concentrating or keeping track of what they were doing. They were also less likely to report that their cognitive performance had declined over time. If we can modify the expectations that older adults have about aging, we could support healthier cognitive aging” by increasing awareness and teaching accurate assumptions about the process.
“Aging expectations are malleable and influence an individual’s perceptions of their cognitive functioning,” said Nikki Hill, associate professor in the Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing at Penn State, who is first author on the paper published in the journal Aging & Mental Health
Previous research has found that expectations about aging, such as whether a person expects to maintain high levels of activity or if they expect everything to go downhill, are associated with health. Those with more negative aging expectations tend to experience worse outcomes, such as more rapid physical and cognitive decline, while positive perceptions of aging are linked to behaviors that promote health and wellbeing like exercise.
Hill is interested in understanding how older adults experience cognitive changes and influences related to aging. She noticed that when people describe their experiences, they often include stereotypical and stigmatized beliefs about aging and cognitive decline. For example, people who are worried about perceived declines in their cognitive function—even if their cognitive health is normal—are at higher risk for developing a cognitive impairment in the future, Hill explained. She said that with conditions like Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, there’s a slow, gradual decline in cognitive function over decades and people often experience subtle symptoms before clinical tests identify an impairment in cognition. The research team conducted an online survey among 65-year-olds and older in the United States who lived independently and didn’t report any diagnosis of dementia or other cognitive impairment. A total of 581 people completed the survey; 51% of the respondents were women and 74% were non-Hispanic white. The survey asked about their expectations about physical health, mental health and cognitive function in relation to aging. They were asked to rate statements — for example, “every year that people age, their energy levels go down a little more” — on a four-point scale from “definitely true” to “definitely false.”
The team found that people who had more positive expectations of aging tended to report less perceived decline in their cognitive abilities, both in the last week, and over the last 10 years. On the other hand, more negative expectations of aging were linked to more negative perceptions of their current cognitive performance and whether they perceived cognitive decline. Attitudes about both physical and mental, and cognitive health affected how they perceived their cognition. People with positive expectations in any of the three domains were more likely to rate their cognition higher, while people with the negative rated lower. Good News Network
