Old Collegians T20 WORLD CUP
AFL GRAND FINAL WEEK
What fantastic news that two Kevinians went to the T20 World Cup this year in the UAE with the national team of Papua New Guinea with Carl Sandri (SKC '01) as Head Coach and Damian Shanahan (SKC '94) as Batting Coach. Their careers in cricket are extensive but a few points include Carl having played in the SKC 1st XI for four years (1998 – 2001) with a Premiership in 2001. In addition to an outstanding career within Victorian Premier Cricket, Carl had an extensive international playing career, representing Italy, as well as a stint as a player with the Sydney Thunder in the BBL, and a coaching role with the Melbourne Renegades. Carl has assisted the coaching program at St Kevin’s in many capacities for many years, culminating in two Premierships in 2013 and 2015. Damian Shanahan played three seasons in the SKC 1st XI (1992-1994) with a Premiership in 1992. He has had a wonderful career playing and coaching in the Victorian Premier Cricket, primarily with Camberwell, Geelong, and Greenvale. Damian also had a lengthy time as the very successful coach of the Geelong Grammar 1st XI with a Premiership in 2014. Both were selected in the St Kevin’s team of the century with Carl a lead bowler and Damian as the opening bat.
What better activity in preparation for the Grand Final than a round of golf at one of Perth’s best golf courses, Lake Karrinyup Country Club? Club Board Member is none other than our Leo Crohan (SKC '77) and unquestioned leader of the Western Australian Chapter of SKOCA. Mitch Wallis (SKC '10) and Lachie Hunter (SKC '12), both with the Western Bulldogs, were well hosted by Leo and had valuable down time from training.
SPORT OF KINGS Alex Rae (SKC '13), at only 26 years of age, is having quite an impact on the racing industry. Since finishing school, Alex and his team have been making headlines in the industry for all the right reasons. The team has won the Medium Stable of the Year award, as well as training the winner of the Country CUP on an Oaks Day. He has over 18 horses in the stable and has many other successes.
GERRY SEXTON (SKC '38) – NOTCHED UP A CENTURY Congratulations, Gerry Sexton who turned 100 years of age on 12 November. Gerry celebrated with many family including some of his seven children, 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Gerry has been a regular visitor to the College in recent years and still represented SKOCA in the APS Past Student’s Bowls Tournament well into his 90s. His life has been filled with milestones, as could be imagined, including being a Major during WW2 and a senior executive with the Commonwealth Bank. Never far from his life was his love of Lawn Bowls where he has played and administered the sport for most of his life. He still lives in the family home in Balwyn some 72 years later, and even has two of his (almost) retired children (Peter and Mary) living with him again. Gerry won’t have it said they are there to look after him, as he suggests it’s more the other way around. SKOCA contributed a couple of bottles of cheer to the celebration which arrived just as the Queen’s letter did. Well done, Gerry! Do you know someone who is about to turn 100 – contact SKOCA.
Some key aspects of Alex’s work involve employing many people with disabilities, building his workforce into a team approach, taking pride in rehoming all his racehorses to suitable candidates and Alex, and treating his horses as if they are a part of the family. A further connection is that his racing manager is Xavier Sebal (SKC '13) . 14
