From the Principal Dear Parents and Carers, If there is one thing very clear to me from my time so far at St Kevin’s College, it is that we are exceptionally good at attending to the core business of what a school is: the teaching, learning and growth of all individuals, from our youngest ELC students through to our young men in Year 12. Throughout this year, as we have returned to school regularly and immersed ourselves fully into classroom practice, I have availed myself of the many opportunities to see first-hand the significant work and support available for all students to learn here at our College. The learning is intentional, focused and rigorous. It provides students with a framework to ask questions, extend knowledge and develop a skill set befitting our contemporary world. It grounds students in confidence and encourages them to think critically. The learning environment at St Kevin’s - coming from both school and home - is a culture of expectation, hard work, and perseverance. In many ways, what we expect of the boys in their learning is to be aspirational, motivated, and to view effort as the key indicator of success. And how do we achieve this? Through our appreciation and respect for our staff and the professional expertise they offer. By engaging and encouraging students to grow their confidence and assuredness through motivational speakers at regular assemblies. By providing attention and guidance to individual students, allowing them the confidence to thrive through academic review, outside classroom tutoring, learning diversity support, and career counselling. By introducing routine tests and exams from a young age, coupled with a teaching and learning portal that offers real-time, up-to-date advice which provides invaluable feedback for improvement. And, when all this is said and done, holding wellbeing and faith alongside teaching and learning delivers a holistic educational framework. Last Monday was the Feast day of St Mary Mackillop of the Cross. May we always remember her tenacity, intellect and perseverance in all her works.

From the Deputy Principal STUDENT LEADERSHIP INITIATIVES Across Term 3 our student leadership team have been looking at ways to connect the Middle and Senior School and create lunchtime events to showcase skills. Yesterday our senior students competed with staff in a Spelling Bee whilst our Middle School students were part of a Longest Throw competition. Other sporting and performing arts events are planned right through Term 3. In addition to this, the House Debating is in full swing each Thursday lunchtime and a seat in the Ruby Tout is hard to find as each debate contests ideas, tests wit and works for house pride. The Year 12 student leaders have also been working on events beyond the school community. A planning team is busy developing a fundraising event for Senior School in collaboration with Loreto College and Sacre Coeur on September 10 in support of Zimele. Further details will be provided in upcoming newsletters. While our Year 12 students maintain a strong focus on their studies, their efforts in these important aspects of school life are wonderful examples of servant leadership and enhance the community enormously.
UNIFORM UPDATES Over the last few weeks we have been working with our uniform supplier, Bob Stewart, to ensure supplies are ready for the summer uniform. The uniform is undergoing very slight review, with a group looking at academic hats and summer socks. If you have any feedback about either of these items we invite you to make contact with the College to provide your feedback. STUDENT EXPECTATIONS Throughout 2022 a team of staff have been working to develop clear, transparent behaviour guidelines for the community. After consultation with staff, families and students these were released to the community in May. In this early stage of implementation we have continued to gather feedback about their effectiveness in supporting students and maintaining standards. Some important feedback has been about creating a document in plain language that outlines our guidelines for each community member each day. These have been drawn from the behaviour support guidelines and provide 10 very simple actions that will prepare students for learning should be attended to every day. For most students these are behaviours that already form their everyday practice. We commend students for attending to this and being ready for learning everyday. These were provided to students this week and discussed with tutors and in assemblies. They are provided here for your reference. From the Faith and Mission Team “NEVER SEE A NEED WITHOUT DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT” On Monday 8 August, celebrated the feast of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, Australia’s first canonised saint. She was a woman ‘of compassion, generosity, humility, gentleness and patience’. She devoted her life to caring for the needs of children, and those who were poor and destitute. Underpinning all her activities was her faith in divine providence, meaning that she believed God was always with her in all she did. A God full of love and compassion. In the many challenges she faced and the crosses she endured, Mary never doubted the endless love of God. She set her heart on creating a better world that left no one behind. Somehow she knew that her material needs would be met. Demonstrating her faith in God, she often told her sisters, ‘God will take care of us all’. Mary was a trail-blazer in her lifetime; she paved the way for education of poor children and a variety of ministries which addressed the needs of 19th century Australia. Her legacy continues today in countless ways. Education in its many facets is still a strong ministry for the Sisters of Saint Joseph, the order that she founded. Her motto was “Never see a need without doing something about it”. Mary was a woman open to listening and looking for the needs of others. Here at St Kevin’s, we are encouraged to look out for the needs of others, to a be a good friend and to share the load with those that are struggling. We ask our community to open their hearts and minds to others. Most importantly we must continue to stand in solidarity with people that experience injustice and hardship. In the same tradition St Teresa of Calcutta was known as saying: “At the end of life we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made, how many great things we have done. We will be judged by how we respond to - ‘I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless, and you took me in”. Monday’s gospel reading reminded us that with trust and faith in God anything is possible, just as St Mary of the Cross MacKillop shared this same trust in God. ‘I am telling you not to worry about your life and what you are to eat, nor about your body and how you are to clothe it. … Look at the birds in the sky. They do not sow or reap or gather into barns; yet the heavenly Father feeds them.’ (Matthew 6:25-34). This reading concludes by reminding us all not to worry about the things we can’t control. A very important message for us today at St Kevin’s. Often we concern ourselves with other people’s perceptions and expectations. ‘So do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own’.
INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE WORLD’S INDIGENOUS PEOPLES Tuesday 9 August was International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. The aim of the day is to raise awareness and protect the rights of the world’s indigenous populations. This event also recognises the culture, achievements and contributions indigenous people have in our world. Last week all the Year Nine students returned from RICE camp. An expedition to many remote areas of Australia. Each had an educational component of the local indigenous peoples and land. It is hoped that by these experiences they can better understand the sacred connections between land, nature and their ancient peoples

From the Acting Director of Teaching and Learning ASSEMBLY This week at assembly I spoke to the Year 10–12 students about the importance of planning and preparedness in study. That our best performance can only come when we have invested in thorough preparation for the task. When we don’t, our performance may be our maximum that does not mean it will be our best. There is a difference.
BIG SCIENCE COMPETITION 2022 At assembly we also recognised students in Year 10 who scored a Distinction or High Distinction in the recent Big Science Competition run by the Australian Science Institute. This is a National competition based on a 60 minute examination linked to the Australian Science Curriculum. Over 100,000 students Nationally participate. This year SKC entered over 240 students across Years 7–10. Within this group, 76 of our students scored a High Distinction (National top 5%) or Distinction (National top 15%). We are very proud of them and of all students who took part.
YEAR 10 VCE SUBJECT INFORMATION EVENING & VCE SUBJECT SELECTION HANDBOOK FOR FAMILIES On last Monday evening the College ran the Year 10 VCE subject information evening. Presentations included information on how to use the subject selection handbook, considerations and College requirements for choosing Unit 3/4 sequences in Year 11. All Year 10 parents and carers and students should watch the detailed video recording made by Ms. Sue White. The presentations were recorded and are on the portal.

From the Dean of Student Wellbeing In last week’s newsletter, we announced that Paul Dillon from Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia was due to run sessions with all students in Years 10-12 this week. Unfortunately, due to a personal emergency, Paul had to make the difficult decision to cancel his trip to Melbourne this week. As Paul is in high demand he is not able to offer us another session until next year. We understand the importance of drug and alcohol education, particularly for our senior students, and have begun to look at alternative external providers such as the Red Frogs organisation which we have used previously. We will also run presentations led by members of our Health, Wellbeing, and Psychology Team with a focus on: •

What support strategies students can use to make informed decisions about drugs and alcohol

We encourage parents to look over some of the fantastic resources available on the Student Wellbeing Hub that focus on drugs and alcohol education. As part of our ongoing commitment to developing our health and wellbeing curriculum, key staff have begun working with Emeritus Professor Helen Cahill. Emeritus Professor Helen Cahill, leads a body of research addressing child and youth wellbeing. She has developed a number of disaster recovery, violence-reduction, social and emotional learning, gender rights, sexuality, and drug education programs for use in schools and community settings in Australia. Helen is the lead author of Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships, an open access, evidence-informed social and emotional learning and respectful relationships education program for Australian students from ages 5-18, and the UNESCO Connect with Respect program for prevention of school-related gender-based violence. During our first full day, PD with Helen staff focused on reviewing the current curriculum, programs, and initiatives that exist across the Year 7-12 cohort as well as looking at best practice in schools across all sectors. Helen provided current evidence and data around wellbeing and health issues currently impacting young adults. Our next full-day session with Helen will focus on how we can continue to strengthen our programs in the area of Wellbeing and Health. Justin has been the CEO of Hawthorn Football Club since 2017 and joined the Club following an extensive career in sports administration at both Collingwood and Geelong where he held responsibility for corporate and consumer businesses. Justin is a past parent of the College where his son was a member of the Class of 2016.
Justin was appointed CEO of Melbourne Storm Rugby League Club prior to the commencement of the 2021 season. Prior to joining the Storm, Justin was the Chief Commercial and Customer Officer of Essendon Football Club and came into sports administration from a background in media and sports journalism.

SOLO COMPETITION 2022 Heats for the Solo Competition will be taking place from week 7 of this Term, leading into the finals on October 5th. There are two sections: Intermediate (Yr 7-9) and Senior (Yr 10-12). Both heats and finals involve the performance of one solo piece of music or song. Accompanists, as needed, will be provided by the piano staff. Boys learning at school should discuss details of their participation with their instrumental or vocal teacher. SENIOR CLARINET ENSEMBLE SUCCESSFUL The Senior Clarinet Ensemble performed beautifully in the Boroondara Eisteddfod on Sunday and were awarded 2nd Prize with the Secondary School Chamber Ensemble section. Careers News We hope students and parents found the presentations on Monday evening valuable. It is always beneficial to have context when making decisions, particularly those which may have an influence on opportunity. The world of work is complex and ever-changing. Students will need to be versatile, multi-skilled and open to new opportunities as they make their way from school to study and into the workforce. Year 10 parents and students are encouraged to all view the Careers Presentation which is available here if they have not done so. Subject choices may be amended towards the end of the year to reflect student preference following completion of Semester 2 electives. Any Year 10 student with subject selection queries is welcome to email one of the Careers Practitioners who will provide a considered response.

Thank you to the Year 12 students who have been very proactive booking their VTAC Careers Appointments with us. It is a privilege to see the growth of the Year 12s since we met with them in Term 1, and to have a more nuanced, considered and mature discussion with them about their goals and dreams for 2023. In these meetings, we will complete an initial preference list with each student, set up their Special Consideration and Scholarship applications, and advise about Early Entry schemes for which they might like to apply. Bookings are currently open up to the end of Week 6. From next Monday, weeks 7 and 8 will open. Students are reminded to create a USI and Register with VTAC prior to their appointments. At 5pm THIS SATURDAY, Ms White will host an online VTAC application session for any students who feel they do NOT NEED a personal interview, but just want to tick this task off their list. Students will be emailed the details and link to join. Parents most welcome. All students and parents are advised to keep track of Tertiary Open Day options via Daily Memo each week and on the SKC Careers Portal.

Heyington Author Series Tristan Bancks The Heyington Author Series continued with the Year 7 students all meeting Tristan Bancks in the Smith Hall on Monday 8th of August. His four main books: Two Wolves, The Fall, Detention and just-released Cop and Robber are very popular and constantly on loan. This year, Two Wolves is our sixth most-borrowed book and has been borrowed 44 times. The Fall is ranked 11th most popular, having been borrowed 38 times. Detention is in 12th position with 36 loans and Cop and Robber has already been lent 23 times, even though we have only had it since the beginning of Term 3. Tristan tries to put his characters in a split decision where they must make a choice and this brings great tension and pace to his writing. His characters often need to navigate a world where their parents have flaws (sometimes even criminals!) and they must decide where their loyalty lies. Tristan outlined how he creates soundtracks to help him write his books and he played these much to the students’ delight. He shared how certain events often inspire him to write, his use of “Beat Sheets/Step Outlines”, his drafting process and the importance of research when writing about a topic such as refugees in his novel Detention. The students loved his presentation and many wanted his autograph afterwards! This is some feedback from the Year 7 students: •
“I loved how Tristan spoke about his day to day life and how he comes up with his stories. He can go for a walk and come back with 2,000 words, which is very fascinating.”

“Tristan was funny, interesting and entertaining. The talk made me want to read his books and I am now reading Two Wolves.”

“He inspired me to like writing more and I now know how writers can sometimes overcome writer’s block.”

“I enjoyed Tristan Banck’s presentation as he spoke with lots of detail about his experiences and the techniques that he uses to write his books. I liked his technique of listening to music to get into the feel of the story so he can write more. I very much enjoyed it.”

National Science Week Next week is National Science Week and there are a range of activities happening at Heyington and Waterford to celebrate science at St Kevin’s. All students will commence the week with some healthy competition in the form of a Science-themed Kahoot in Monday morning’s Tutor Group. Also on Monday, some VCE Science students will have the opportunity to experience a virtual reality ‘flight’ where they might perform open heart surgery, go on an adventure in space or journey through the plains of Kenya. Tuesday has a sweet line up. Year 11 VCE Science students will run a Science-themed bake sale, with proceeds going to the Oliva Newton John Cancer Centre. Senior Science students (and their families) are being asked to bring in home-baked goods for sale on this day – further communication will be forthcoming this week. Students are also encouraged to bring in cash on the day to purchase these delicious goods and support a worthwhile cause. Throughout the week, Waterford students will have the opportunity to see some explosive Chemistry and are encouraged to put their creative skills to the test by entering the model making competition. Year 7 and 8 Tutor Groups will be in competition all week to see whose hypothesising reigns supreme. May the most scientific tutor group win. On Friday, the Wilding Centre will be transformed into the night sky as Year 7 students learn about the moon phases in the Science Discovery Dome. On Friday night, 20 Year 12 students will stay at school for a “Science Sleepover” where they will try their hands at suturing and to do some of our most popular experiments, including water bottle rocket launching on Saturday morning, ending Science Week with a bang. It promises to be a fun-filled, action-packed week where students can broaden their love and knowledge of all things science. Martial Arts Spring Training St Kevin’s College would like to advise all Years 7 to 12 students of an exciting 8 week Martial Arts Spring Training program during Terms 3 & 4, commencing on Thursday 18th of August. The program will have 8 weekly training sessions (Thursdays only) under the instruction of the Martial Arts Specialist and SKC Head Coach, Mr Peter Keogh, who will teach Self Defence, Karate and Conflict Management Skills at the following time and venue. Time/Day: 3.30 pm till 5.00 pm on Thursdays, from 18 August - 20 October Venue: Smith Hall Cost: Nil The program is designed to cater for both experienced and non-experienced students, so even newcomers with no experience are most welcome. A white training uniform is desirable (martial arts jacket and pants) but is not a requirement. The purchase of the uniform can be arranged through Mr Arai. If you are interested in the Spring Training, please fill in an application form available on the College website and hand it in to the College Reception with attention to Mr Arai. Spring Luncheon The Glendalough Parent’s Association have been working hard to make this year’s Spring Luncheon on 9 September a fabulous afternoon. Invitations were sent out to the entire school community on Monday. Tickets go on sale this Friday at 10am and they will be sure to sell out quickly. You can buy individual tickets and we will then place you on your requested year level table, or you can nominate to sit with a couple of friends, or organise a table of 12. 2022 Spring Luncheon
Fathers’ Association Last week we conducted our first meeting for the year and I’m happy to say it was, once again, very well attended with some new faces present. On an even more positive note, those dads also volunteered to be part of upcoming events. We had a jam-packed agenda reviewing past events and highlighting tasks for upcoming functions. I thank all who attended. The next event will be a unique networking event aimed at bringing parents and businesses together to promote activity and awareness between SKC parents. The hope is to not only advance professional relationships but personal ones too. Proposed date is Thursday 15 September. More details to follow The Zimele Dawn to Dusk Challenge is on Saturday 10 September where the SKCFA will man the barbecues and assist in fundraising activities. Please reach out if you are happy to assist on the day (11am to 3pm). No more events are happening this Term but Term 4 will, once again, be very busy socially. Lastly, nomination forms for Executive positions for 2023 will be circulated shortly. If you are interested in filling a role, please reach out and let me know.
YEAR 6 FATHER/MALE MENTOR & SON CAMP At 9:00am on Saturday 30 July, around 90 participants arrived at the Lake Dewar YMCA Camp at Myrniong. Fathers/male mentors and sons were greeted by Camp Leads (at a cool -1 degrees at camp) Simon Janes, Simon Wilson, Anthony Angelucci, Charbel Nader and Raj Singh. Slightly different to the Year 5 camp, while the cohort had a chance to participate in mountain bike riding, geocaching, archery, survivor challenges, and a flying fox...canoeing was also on the agenda (on a very cold lake!) The staff and facilities at YMCA Lake Dewar were fantastic, providing a wonderful experience for the many attending a SKCFA Father/Male Mentor & Son Camp for the first time. As the weekend ended, it was clear the camp was no longer simply a date in the family’s calendar. For many, it was a turning point to reconnect with their son, who is growing up so quickly in front of them, displayed by the challenges of 2020-21. In many ways, each dad left with a different son, and importantly, many sons left with a different dad; in the same car but in a better place.
