From the Principal Blessed Edmund Rice Day As a College community founded in the Edmund Rice tradition we joined together to celebrate Blessed Edmund Rice. A businessman, husband, father, teacher and friend, Edmund led his life through the lens of Hope, compassion and service.

As a businessman, Edmund was at ease in the marketplace and used his business skills to feed, clothe and educate the poor and to support his Brothers.

As a husband and father, he knew the joys and headaches of relationships. He learned over time vulnerability leads to strength and empathy, forgiveness and unconditional love toward the other is the call of the Gospels.

Edmund was a teacher, opening the doors of his first school to those on the margins. His teaching inspired and gifted young people with a sense of purpose, determination and joy for the future. He was nothing less than a transformational teacher who had the extraordinary ability to lead people into a new way of being.

A person of faith, Edmund centered his life on God and lived to serve him by serving others. No difficulty could distract him from that focus. No disappointment could disheartened him. No setback could dissuade him. His love of God empowered him to do and be more.

As we marked Edmund Rice Day at school through the celebration of Mass, various community activities, hospitality and the enjoyment of each other’s company we did so in a spirit of joy and celebration for our 104 year history at St Kevin’s College and recognition of the Christian Brothers and the foundation of the congregation in 1802. Edmund’s vision of abundant generosity can never be forgotten.

Living in Community - Student Guidelines This week we launched the Student Guidelines for Behaviour, for Years 7-12, across the Heyington and Waterford campuses. A document that reflects what it means to live in community at St Kevin’s College; the guidelines provide all members of our community with clear expectations around respectful conduct within a large and diverse community. In developing this document,significant consultation opportunities have been provided, since the second half of 2021, with staff, student focus groups and parents. It is hoped that these guidelines will provide clarity of behavioral expectations as we move forward after 2 years of significant disruption post the COVID period.

Staff Conference This year all staff (Teaching and Non Teaching) across our 4 campuses, will participate in a two day conference on Monday 30 May and Tuesday 31st May 2022.This is a vital and rich opportunity afforded to staff, where they will join together to interrogate our best practices as well as those across the educational community; staff will collaborate, share, reflect upon and evolve as a part of their own professional development, and to build the College’s capacity for our students.

Faith and Mission BUILDING ON THE FOUNDATIONS STARTED BY EDMUND RICE This week, SKC celebrated Edmund Rice’s Feast Day. With three Masses celebrated on Tuesday morning for all studentsprep to year 12, everyone was invited to come to prayer and reflect upon the work of Blessed Edmund and how we, can today continue his great legacy.

Fr. Werner Utri, in his homily, spoke of the strong foundations Edmund Rice laid down back in Ireland and how St Kevin’s College is being called to mission and build further on these foundations.

The following story is taken from Desmond Rushe’s, ‘Readings from Edmund Rice: The Man and His times’ and highlights how important and difficult it must have been for Edmund to do what he did, back in Ireland in the late 1700’s. His story is an inspiration for us today as we continue to build on the foundations Edmund commenced over 200 years ago.

THE MISSION OF EDMUND RICE CONTINUES Edmund had relatively little experience and no training as an educationalist and special measures were patently needed to cater for the illiterate poor with whom he was dealing. Many of them were lacking in discipline. Common sense and compassion were two of the major elements Edmund applied in his approach, and in arranging an established routine, he also showed an acute understanding of the peculiar needs of the situation. He also displayed a remarkable capacity to be ahead of his time.

Pupils were placed according to their newness and their degree of improvement. Starters were provided with ruled slates and sharp pointed slate pencils with which to write on them, while proficient boys had copybooks and pens. Kindness and sympathy were encouraged, and monitors were appointed to write headlines for copying and to conduct reading practices.

From the start, Edmund left no one in any doubt that the education he was interested in was unequivocally Catholic. The three R’s were important … but from the first days in Mount Sion, however, there was a strong emphasis on religious instruction. He saw a knowledge of, and a dedication to, religion as an essential element for his pupils and through them, he hoped their illiterate parents would also benefit. Instruction was not enough; practice was also necessary and the boys were given ample opportunity and exhortation.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS: The tool through which Edmund revolutionised Irish society was education. When he first began his mission there was no expectation that the poor could rise above their station in life. To feed the poor was seen as charity; to educate them was considered madness.

God of justice, in Edmund Rice you have shown us that nothing is impossible to those who trust in you. Teach us to be active agents of the Holy Spirit in the renewal of the world. Keep our eyes on the gospel vision and never lose heart. Like Edmund Rice may we be a voice in the wilderness and bring your Word to all we meet. Amen.

Good Friday Appeal On Good Friday (the first Friday of the Term One holidays), twenty-one generous St Kevin’s students gave of their time to help raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal through the Pied Pipers organisation. This has been a strong tradition of our social justice involvement in the Melbourne community for many years, and after a 2 year absence, it was so fantastic to be involved again.

This year St Kevin’s students, teachers and parents volunteered their time and raised $3,815.60 towards the Pied Pipers total of $124,391.65.

Term 2 at Waterford The Waterford experience is about students engaging in their academic studies as well as a range of enrichment activities to complement the important classroom learning. Term Two has already provided the chance for Year 9 students to experience much that Waterford has to offer.

Students have participated in their third Outprac of 2022 with another scheduled for late May. These days have Waterford students visiting two important programs or landmarks in Melbourne CBD as they explore their local surroundings. With 285 students at 18 separate venues it’s requires much preparation but is of huge importance to the Waterford program.

The Waterford students participated in the Waterford Walk as part of Edmund Rice Day. Following the celebration Mass all students made their way along the Yarra Trail from Heyington back to Waterford.

The day itself was stunning and it was a relaxed way for students to have fun and socialize on this special occasion for the College.

The Year 9 students have had four NAPLAN assessments this week. With the cancellation of the 2020 NAPLAN it was Grade 5 for most boys since this occurred. NAPLAN provides important data both individually and collectively about where learning has progressed and where students can continue to focus.

Each Year 9 student has been part of a Social Justice program in the local community this week.

Organisations such as the Melbourne Indigenous Transition School (MITS), Foodbank and the Make a Wish Foundation have presented about their work to the students. Students have been learning about the importance of social justice as part of their Religious Education and seeing these organisations in practice will consolidate their theoretical knowledge of their work.

Waterford students will be involved in the Year 7-9 Musical commencing on May 14 with the final show on May 19. This will be held in the Vaucluse Hall and students and staff have been busily preparing for Singing in the Rain…a classic that will delight audiences!

Next week at Waterford we will be celebrating Languages Day with a focus on the four languages we study: French, Japanese, Mandarin and Spanish. We are delighted with the range of cultural workshops on offer for the students. Each boy will have an opportunity to take part in two workshops which include: Taiko Drumming, Shodo and Origami, Kung Fu, Tea Ceremony, cooking paella, Salsa dancing, a petanque competition and playing a French quiz game. The canteen will also have international dishes on sale to celebrate the event including fried rice, churros, croissants and sushi. This offers students an authentic learning experience that will connect their classroom to the real world.

There is much to celebrate and enjoy at Waterford.

Our strong encouragement is that each student make the most of the opportunity presented to them in this unique program and fully engage in Year 9 at St Kevin’s.

From the Dean of Professional Practice Years 7-12 Supporting our teachers’ professional development and high quality practice is pivotal for improving outcomes for students, and at the start of 2022, I was unsure that we, or rather any school, could hope to emulate the incredible professional growth we had accomplished in the previous two years: its key components of resilience, compassion, curiosity and purpose had never been so greatly channelled than during the COVID pandemic, by our teaching staff as they pivoted time and time again between online and onsite, exploring and sharing ways to enhance student well-being, experience and outcomes. And yet, our capacity to shift back into the full swing of college life this semester, determined to challenge and to conquer the slightest fault-line of a postCOVID educational chasm, has been inspiring.

So what are we doing this semester in terms of professional growth at St Kevin’s? Across career stages, colleagues are choosing to thrive: our graduates new to teaching and those new to leadership roles are navigating these journeys supported by our expert Teaching & Learning coaches; who also offer established leaders opportunity to reflect on and enhance their space using DISC, the personality profile model. A host of pre-service teachers are now onsite, voluntarily mentored by colleagues in many disciplines, determined to help shape the teachers of tomorrow.

For the teachers of today, at a community level, some individuals are challenging themselves through accreditable courses such as Masters Degrees and HALT (Highly Accomplished & Lead Teacher), and IBSC Action Research programs, which compel them to interrogate the teaching standards and reflect on their own practice; they do this with our full support, as do those who seek out bespoke external learning opportunities. At the college level, weekly pop-up workshops around Feedback, Digital Efficacy, Curriculum, Library Services, Respectful Relationships, Reconciliation, Catholic Education and much more, are freely offered by expert colleagues to share and to support.

Additionally, this term, Waterford colleagues have established Professional Learning Communities across a range of foci, to research and to evolve the best Year 9 experience. At Heyington, a six-week goal-setting process is in place for all teachers to push for marginal gains in our practice, underscored by student feedback, to help us understand what we are doing well and where we can build. Add to this, the collaboration and collegiality fostered through those vital corridor conversations, those working lunches and those reply-all emails generously laden with lovely resources. Indeed, it’s imperative here to consciously acknowledge these moments of growth our colleagues commit to, perhaps even unconsciously, every day, and that are becoming increasingly systemic largely thanks to our learning leaders’ expertise and empathy. Teaching is not easy, a preparedness to learn as one teaches even less so, as we balance this against multiple and competing commitments and demands. But bombastic as it may read, there is no hyperbole in stating that time and time again our teachers strive to be the very best stewards of their professional selves, of their students and the future of education. Truly, it is [always] an exciting time to be a teacher at St Kevin’s.

Emergency Clinic Optimus Health provides additional first aid staff for St. Kevin’s College sporting venues for APS sport each Saturday. This year they will be running a sports injury assessment centre from their clinic in Richmond on a Saturday again. This is staffed by an Emergency Nurse Practitioner who also works in the Royal Children’s and Adult ED’s. In line with the health system being overrun at the moment, what is considered an ‘urgent’ but not ‘emergency’ presentation to the hospital can result in a 4-12 hour wait depending on the situation at each hospital. The below flyer provides further information about this service, and trained first aid personnel onsite will be able to provide the appropriate differentiation of where is best to present depending on the injury.

Careers News Recently, I had the opportunity to attend a day of professional development about the evolving landscape for both the workplace and higher education as a result of COVID-19. Industry representatives from McKinsey & Company, KPMG and the Common Purpose Collective discussed processes of recruiting, onboarding and retaining young employees who have vastly different priorities compared with traditional goals. Students will be wanting to create bespoke, autonomous pathways for themselves in the world of work, with money not the primary concern it has been in the past. Instead, students are researching what companies stand for, how they are trying to make a difference, and how they instil a sense of belonging for employees.

Tertiary education provides the core foundation for many roles however, more and more, students will be required to differentiate themselves. Students crave opportunities for industry immersion, the ability to build and cultivate skills across a variety of portfolios, and the means to demonstrate leadership, collaboration and problem-solving abilities.

Graduates from universities continue to have good employment outcomes, although it is unclear what the ‘real premium’ of a degree versus other study provides. Evidence also suggests there is little attributable difference in outcomes from different universities over the longer term. It is more important for students researching options following Year 12 to follow their passions, understand their choices and make informed decisions. The direct financial contribution students are making to their tertiary education is growing when compared with the level of tax payer subsidisation, particularly in the fields of Law, Commerce and Arts/Humanities courses. Whatever pathway a student takes, it is going to impact their personal wellbeing and academic engagement, mental health, breadth of opportunity and financial capacity. Whilst pathways are rarely linear, and change in direction is always possible, it is our aim to help students make informed and appropriate decisions to enhance their chance of initial success.

Informed and appropriate VCE subject selection is the first step in this important decision-making process and Year 10 families are reminded to book their Careers Appointment as soon as possible to ensure we have enough appointments for all students. The SKC Careers Evening on Tuesday 21st July provides an incredible opportunity for students and parents to engage with a variety of pathways, professions, tertiary and independent institutions in order to learn as much as possible about the variety of options available post-school. It was fabulous to see so many students attending the Bond University information

session at lunch time Wednesday. Parents interested in hearing about student options and experience at Bond University will be able to connect with Bond on the Careers Evening.

Year 12 students interested in pursuing a Medical or Dental career post-school are reminded that UCAT registrations close on Monday 17th May. Details are included in the newsletter.

Year 12 students are reminded of the opportunity to register for the Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA), Food Handler Safety and Barista Courses which will be conducted on Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 of June at the College. Students need to register and pay via TryBooking.

Fathers’ Association It was another highly successful Father & Son cooking event this year.

Across three nights the Year 6 students and their fathers enjoyed an evening at the Waterford Campus learning to cook a delicious meal of Mediterranean spiced lamb backstrap with wild mushroom and asparagus risotto and a chocolate and salted caramel fondant with berries and double cream for dessert.

There were many eager faces, keen to learn a new recipe to be able to cook for Mum on Mother’s Day. We are sure there were a number of happy Year 6 Mum’s that got to dine on their boys lovingly made meals on Sunday.

On behalf of the Father’s Association we’d like to thank Charbel Rizk and Nick Edwards from Häcker Kitchens Australia who proudly sponsored and hosted the event across the three nights. Special mention to Chef Cleo and Assistant Will from Winning Appliances who did a fantastic job in teaching the boys and Dads. Also, a big thank you to both to Rana and Damian Toscano for their donation of the fresh produce and incoming St Kevin’s Father Anthony Kairouz for the donation of the lamb.

Our second golf day is this Friday and I look forward to another fantastic day albeit with slightly different weather predictions to last year. A bit cooler and some chance of rain, but hopefully that evens out the playing field and increases the competitiveness.

Next contribution by the fathers’ association will be our annual involvement in the art show - set up, bar operation on opening night and debunk. A valuable and cooperative initiative by the association to the Friends of Art and the school. Thank you to all who have offered their assistance in either or all aspects of the event.

We are still in the planning stages of the annual sit down dinner / AFL theme. Panellists are still required and we are seeking assistance from any connected individuals who may have access to current or past notable players.
