From the Principal Dear Families
WELCOME TO TERM 3! It is hard to believe we are over half way through the 2022 academic year and there is still so much more to come. It has been terrific to see, hear and feel the College fully alive again after a well-deserved break. Much is planned for this term at all campuses and in coming weeks. After a two-year pause, the much-loved RICE Camps for our Year 9 students at Waterford will commence next week with destinations planned for across Australia. We look forward to hearing about these adventurous journeys on their return and the authentic learning about life, nature, culture and communal living. The Retreat days for our Year 8 students have commenced with visits to significant places of religious importance in Melbourne, including St Patrick’s Cathedral and our students at ELC and Glendalough have returned with renewed energy and enthusiasm. It is wonderful to welcome on behalf of the community three post-secondary students from overseas as part of their GAP experience to Australia. These GAP students will be based at Glendalough to support learning and teaching and co-curricular programs. House Masses, followed by supper for students and their families from Years 10-12 have also commenced with Cusack, McCarthy and Kenny celebrations of the Eucharist occurring this week. The Rahill, Kearney and Purton Masses will occur next week. It is fabulous to see such gatherings being supported so well by our families.
STAFFING UPDATES We formally welcome Ms Carolyn McCarthy to the role of Deputy Principal - Student Engagement this week and congratulate Mrs Helen Gastin on her appointment as Acting Dean of Waterford for the remainder of the year. We welcome Mr Adam Bylsma to the role of Acting Director of Teaching and Learning for the next 12 months as we offer Hannah Kollmorgen our blessings and warm wishes as she prepares to welcome her third child into her family. Whilst Adam takes on the role of Learning and Teaching, we congratulate Ms Kate Burrows on her appointment as Acting Head of the Science Faculty. Please note the second Deputy Principal - Community Engagement position will be advertised in coming weeks, to commence January 2023. As Mr James Daly continues to remain on sick leave for the current time, I thank Mr Julius Wong and Mrs Sarah Verdaguer for continuing on in the role of Acting Co-Directors of Glendalough and acknowledge the work of Mrs Sophie Hunter and Mrs Mary Mazza in their significant work as part of the College Leadership Team.
PRAYER Each Monday the staff from all campuses gather for a short briefing prior to the commencement of the week to pray together, share news and provide some key messages for the week. On Monday we commenced the term with this prayer that I share with you now. Lord, as we prepare for the coming of a new term, make us ready, attentive and available to hear you. Thank you for the gift of being able to rise each day with the assurance that you walk through it with us. Thank you for the gifts of creativity and uniqueness, and the energy to put them to good use. May all that we are today, all that we try to do today, may all our encounters, reflections, even the frustrations and failings all be placed in your hands. From the Faith and Mission Team It’s wonderful to be back at St Kevin’s after our mid-winter break. The holidays already seem like a world away, but its distant echoes continue to fuel me through the term. Our Keenan family needed a generous supply of fuel, as our family eagerly embarked on our road trip to Brisbane. Buzzing with excitement, our mobile hive followed the road northward towards warm rays. A jam-packed car of two adults, 6 kids and a trailer full of camping gear might not be everyone’s idea of a relaxing holiday. If I’m being honest, I think my wife, Catherine is still undecided. The weather wasn’t too kind to us and disrupted our planned itinerary. Despite this, it was an unforgettable trip, cooped up together on our journey in our tin can many miles from home. I can’t resist a road trip. The thought of driving for days, left with our thoughts generates a sense of delight, rather than despair. An abiding sense of freedom, a new perspective and a chance to relax and listen to Bowie and Bono; I just love it. As I pondered, Bono came on the radio and declared “I still haven’t found what I’m looking for.” I appreciated these sentiments, as I gazed out at the ever-changing views and contemplated the world around me. My wife wishes both Bono and I would hurry up and quickly work out what we’ve lost and become more organised. Of course, I think we’re all searching for something, trying to satisfy a visceral longing. I think it’s what makes us human. What we search for varies. It might indeed be, a quest to find spiritual enlightenment. For my kids though it’s usually a hot dog and a fizzy drink. My wife experiences peace when she’s finally tracked down where my one-year old daughter has hidden her socks and shoes. In my life at St Kevin’s, I feel immensely privileged to travel in a very different vehicle, transporting our students to where they need to be, helping them to find what they are looking for. It’s easy to forget, but on their journeys our students are bombarded with distractions from every angle; an assault on the senses. With the expectations that society projects upon them, it is no wonder if they were to feel dazzled and disorientated. I actually think it was the same for the disciples, 2000 years ago. They also needed reassurance and support on their journey. They turned to Jesus and pleaded with him, ‘teach us how to pray.’ Now, I must admit I haven’t had any boys ask this same question directly in recent times, but I passionately believe our students still possess the same curiosity, questions and hope as those early disciples. We are blessed at St Kevin’s to have a passionate and dedicated team of Faith and Mission team members with a variety of programs, offering opportunities for our students
to receive sustenance for the soul, so they can experience sacred moments as they travel with us at St Kevin’s. This week the Year 8 tutor groups have already started their retreat journeys into Melbourne. Each tutor group will meet at the historic All Saints Parish in Fitzroy to pause and pray, before walking in the footsteps of Mary MacKillop and Mary Glowrey. The boys continue their absorbing day, immersing themselves in our Catholic heritage in the streets of our great City and also the hallowed spaces at St Patrick’s Cathedral. The House Masses for Cusack and McCarthy took place in the Smith Hall on Monday and last night. It has been delightful for us all to come together as a community, with our House Head, tutors, parents and sons and give thanks to God. We look forward to another wonderful celebration of the Holy Eucharist tonight with Kenny House. During Term 3, our Year 10 boys will also prepare for their Community Service program, giving them the chance to serve the needs of their community and put their faith into action. Later this term, our Year 11 students will experience their seminar retreat days. Working in collaboration with Sacré Cœur and Loreto College. It is heartening to experience each of the opportunities that our students encounter. Pope Francis believes that, whoever approaches the Church must find open doors. Francis, unlike Bono, knows exactly what he is looking for: everyone. At world youth day in Rio 2013, Francis recites a poem which explains that we need an array of saints, “We need saints for the 21st Century with a spirituality appropriate to our new time.” The poem also continues “We need saints that drink Coca Cola and eat hot dogs.” Words that will be music to my children’s ears. At St Kevin’s we offer an inclusive program, offering all of our students a chance to reflect on their precious life. We aim to share our faith story in a way that enables each of our students to discover what they are looking for and realise what fulfilment in our world means for them. We do all we can to be welcoming and inclusive, supporting each one of our students where ever they may be on their faith journey. From the Director of Teaching and Learning ST KEVIN’S COLLEGE STUDENTS WIN TOP HONOURS AT THE VCE PREMIER’S AWARDS Congratulations to Andrew Mathieson, Dominic O’Leary, Emile Ambrosi and Tom Davidson who have been recognised with a Premier’s VCE Award for their outstanding academic results in 2021. The annual Premier’s VCE Awards recognise the top-performing students in the state. This year, 298 students across 90 subjects were recognised with awards for their outstanding results. Andrew Mathieson received a Study Award for Ancient History; Dominic O’Leary received a Study Award for Legal Studies; Emile Ambrosi received a Study Award for French; and Tom Davidson received a Study Award for Further Mathematics. The entire St Kevin’s community is proud of these students, and would like to congratulate them on being the recipients of such a prestigious award. Our congratulations are also extended to the following fine teachers who supported these students to achieve great success in their respective subjects: Mr Andrew Butcher, Ms Alexander Squarci, Madam Cullen and Mr James Ross. MONASH SCHOLARS PROGRAM After completing a competitive application process, three Year 10 students were recently invited into the prestigious Monash Scholars Program: Joel Coburn, Alexander Di Nuzzo and Nam Le. In their application, students needed to demonstrate academic achievement, extra curricular endeavours and articulate what a good leader looks like and how they display these qualities in their own lives. These young scholars will be given an exclusive opportunity to engage with Monash University, attending university events that will support their success at school and enable them to discover what it’s like to walk in the shoes of a university student. Our College Child Safety Officers play a critical role by being advocates and subject matter experts in Child Safety. Their role is pivotal in helping us start conversations with students, staff and parents. The Child Safety Officer’s aim is to: •

As CEO of Richmond Football Club since 2009, Brendon has overseen a period of significant change and growth. Prior to his current role, Brendon was CEO of the AFL Players Association and practiced law at King & Wood Mallesons. Brendon is a current parent with a son at the College.
Justin has been the CEO of Hawthorn Football Club since 2017 and joined the Club following an extensive career in sports administration at both Collingwood and Geelong where he held responsibility for corporate and consumer businesses. Justin is a past parent of the College where his son was a member of the Class of 2016.
Justin was appointed CEO of Melbourne Storm Rugby League Club prior to the commencement of the 2021 season. Prior to joining the Storm, Justin was the Chief Commercial and Customer Officer of Essendon Football Club and came into sports administration from a background in media and sports journalism.

Music News SOLO COMPETITION 2022

Heats for the Solo Competition will be taking place from week 7 of this Term, leading into the finals on October 5th. There are two sections: Intermediate (Years 7-9) and Senior (Years 10-12). Both heats and finals involve the performance of one solo piece of music or song. Accompanists, as needed, will be provided by the piano staff.

2022 Spring Luncheon
Careers News Attendance at University and TAFE Open Days is really important. This is especially so if you plan to apply for a course which requires an interview, folio presentation or audition as part of the application process (Art and Design, Music and Drama courses for example). Due to COVID, the Open Day offerings are once again a mix of online and in-person attendance for which you must register. Please register early as places will fill fast. Open Days are not just for Year 12 students. Year 10 is a great time to start some visits. Reading about a course that interests you is good; visiting the institution offering the course is even better. Year 11 students are encouraged to attend at least one Open Day this year as they did not have the opportunity to do so in 2021. The more research students undertake prior to Year 12, the easier the burden of information gathering and selection in Year 12.

There are many opportunities for students on offer this term in addition to two parent information evenings. Interview Skills Workshops, both general (Wednesday July 27) and for Medicine (Wednesday August 10th), are provided on two Wednesdays after school for Year 12 students. A lunch time session was held yesterday for students interested in boarding at St John XXIII College at ANU. Year 10 students have the opportunity to hear from teachers of VCE subjects on the morning of Thursday August 4 to aid with VCE subject selection. Year 10 and 11 students are invited to a UCAT preparation webinar after school on Wednesday August 31st. Year 10 students also have an amazing Shape Your Destiny program on the final Wednesday of term. Please encourage your sons to take advantage of all opportunities relevant to them.
