Senior School Newsletter Term 1, Week 10 2022

From the Principal Dear Families, Carers and Students In my reflections last week I focused on Hope and struggle - a very important and real part of our everyday life. As we conclude the term, our ongoing Hope, our persistence and our commitment to community lead us to the celebration of a term that we can look back on with tremendous pride. We can all move into the Easter season with gratitude for what we have been able to experience over the past ten weeks. Our thankfulness in 2022 is amplified through the understanding of what life can be like without activities, togetherness and everyday living still fresh in our minds after the last two years of lockdowns. Across the past week our full calendars have seen the Glendalough Year 5 and 6 boys participating in APS sport, our Year 7-9 Music students attend camp, our Year 10 and 11 students explore the outdoors through OAP and our Year 12 students consolidate a term of academic rigour with SACs and exam preparation. We know all too well the deafening silence of music halls, the sight of fallow sports fields and the eeriness of empty classrooms. So, as we rest our weary bones after an enormous term, we do so with a grateful heart. Holy Week follows the path of Jesus from entering Jerusalem gloriously on Palm Sunday, through his betrayal and suffering on Good Friday and concludes with his resurrection on Easter Sunday. The story is one of suffering and renewal and it behoves us to think about the parallels between the Easter story and our experiences over the last 2 years. This term has seen the rebirth and resurrection of physical classrooms and the fabulous activities that build community. As we come out of the darkness and into the fullness of life we feel deep gratitude for all we have. David Whyte wrote this poem on Easter morning in 2015 in memory of his friend, Irish poet John O’Donohue. It captures the joy of the light of Easter. May this Easter and holiday season bring light, peace and the joy of the resurrection.

THE BLESSING OF THE MORNING LIGHT (OR, “EASTER BLESSING”) The blessing of the morning light to you, may it find you even in your invisible appearances, may you be seen to have risen from some other place you know and have known in the darkness and that that carries all you need. May you see what is hidden in you as a place of hospitality and shadowed shelter, may that hidden darkness be your gift to give, may you hold that shadow to the light and the silence of that shelter to the word of the light, may you join all of your previous disappearances with this new appearance, this new morning, this being seen again, new and newly alive. The Bell and the Blackbird (2018) David Whyte

Faith and Mission

ENTERING HOLY WEEK – MAUNDY THURSDAY

WHOM DO WE SERVE? Who do we serve? Who serves us?

‘Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.’

What do we do with our power? What power do we have?

(John 13:14-15)

What are we here for? To serve

Lent will quietly end next Thursday, when the afternoon will run into darkness and dusk will commence the Triduum.

or to be served?

Holy Thursday, or as it was known in earlier times, Maundy Thursday, derives from an early Latin hymn, “Mandatum novum do vobis”, which is taken from John’s Gospel - “a new commandment I give to you”, (John 13:34). The Liturgy celebrated on the evening of Maundy Thursday is a celebration of ritual, action, prayer and service. Here, the Institution of the Eucharist – the Last Supper, becomes the centre of our faith. Jesus is at table, he takes bread, he blesses it, he breaks it, and shares it with his disciples… “do this in memory of me”. Maundy Thursday is also remembered for when Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, an act of hospitality and courtesy. Both the Eucharist and the Washing of the Feet are acts of love and service. We remember this night for these two acts of love Jesus shared with his disciples, and invites us to “do in Memory of Him”.

Who do we think we are in this world?

Lord, you showed us the way. For the avoidance of doubt, your best sermons were what you did, like at the Last Supper: on your knees, washing the dusty feet of your disciples. This was too much for Peter, still not getting it, Despite all that time spent together. On your last night, just hours away from madness of trial by the human race, you gave us no less than yourself, and made it very simple for all those who dared to follow you: do the same. [Raymond Friel & David Wells] ‘This is where the way that Jesus talks about holiness at the Last Supper is so transforming. Holiness there is seen as going into the heart of where it’s most difficult for human beings to be human. Jesus goes “outside the city”; he goes to the place where people suffer and are humiliated, the place where people throw stuff out, including other people.’ [Rowen Williams, Being Disciples]

Tennis Day 2022 On Monday 4th April, over 60 parents from Sacre Coeur & St Kevins College met again on the courts of Kooyong to create “magic at the net!” Parents past and present presented in tennis whites, navies and multi coloured active wear to battle it out on the courts. This year we had 9 courts in action, with the 10th cardio court, joining us later in the morning. There were some hard-fought battles during the games of Fast Four Tennis. There was also plenty of laugher, banter and of course cries of, “the sun was in my eyes, that’s why I totally missed the ball!” Following tennis, players made their way to the St Kevin’s Pavilion, where they were treated to a champagne arrival. Mrs Barker and Ms Melia-Douvos shared an update on the current students progress in 2022, both commenting on how exciting it was to have the school full of students for the first time in two years . Both Principals shared their thanks to staff, students and parents, for their support over recent challenging times. The annual Tennis Day has been running for over 20 years now. Each year we select a charity to benefit from the proceeds raised on the day. This year we proudly supported KIDS Under Cover. KIDS Under Cover is non-for-profit organisation dedicated to preventing youth homelessness. They support vulnerable people between the ages of 12-25 years who are either already homeless, or at risk of homelessness.

“Team Tennis” put on another great event, quoted by some as “my favourite event of the year!”. We hope to see all players back again next year, and look forward to welcoming new players for a fun filled event in 2023. We wish to thank all our sponsors: •

Careers News Careers Advisors are required to maintain up to date knowledge about tertiary institutions and the courses on offer, changes to modes of delivery, content and, importantly industry partnership opportunities which students may take advantage of. Within the last two weeks, I have had the opportunity to undertake professional development with Bond University, the University of Sydney, RMIT, Swinburne University and the tertiary admissions centre for NSW, UAC which provide the opportunity to listen to overviews from all NSW based universities. Information gained is shared within our team so we all have the required expertise to provide students and parents alike with reliable, relevant and up to date advice about courses and universities in Victoria and interstate. Students who are ready to think about expanding their horizons and looking at courses offered across Australia can be confident we can provide them with advice to help them with their decision making. Where possible, course information presentations are uploaded to the Careers Portal under the University and Course Specific Information heading which can be accessed by all interested students and parents.

Items of note in the Careers News this week include:

Year 12 students have been notified of the opportunity to register for the Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA), Food Handler Safety and Barista Courses which will be conducted on Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 of June at the College. Students need to register and pay via TryBooking.

Ms Horstman, Ms O’Sullivan & Mrs White

Following the Career Avenues Feedback Evening, we are looking forward to meeting with all Year 10 students and at least one parent/guardian throughout Term 2. At this stage, whilst students may meet with us in person, parents are requested to participate online via google meet. Best wishes to all families for a safe and enjoyable holiday break and a very Happy Easter.
