om bord i robåten til syne. Ei bording midtfjords nærmar seg. På babord side veks ein fortetta liten «by» ut or ingenting. Den store husklynga stig fram bak den stupbratte fjellsida. Undredal, ei veglaus bygd på vestsida av fjorden med om lag 200 innbyggjarar, inneklemt mellom bratter og nutar på over 1700 meter. Breen har lagt frå seg ei morene nedst nede og lagar ei skråning ned mot fjorden.

Og på ei stripe ned mot flomålet ligg husa. For ein liten gutetrave frå høgfjellet brenner dette storslåtte synet seg fast i minnet.

Her om bord gjer ein av dei reisande seg klar: tek på seg ytterkleda og finn reiseveska si i bagasjehylla.

Dei får besøk i Undredal, rutebåten går ikkje opp under, så då lyt dei ro den i møte. Maskinen slår bakk, ein port i rekka vert opna og færingen glir roleg inn mot skipssida. Dei utvekslar nokre ord, og den reisande balanserer om bord i robåten samstundes som ein av mannskapet overleverer nokre pakkar og litt post. Dei vinkar farvel og MS Balholm set full fart framover. Rundt kvart eit nes dukkar det fram åkerlappar, løer og hus. På ein slåtteteig ned med fjorden støyter ein færing mot fjæresteinane, og ein kar hoppar i land. Han tek til å fylla båten med turrhøy. Det har vore lagra der sidan slåtten.

A mid-fjord embarkation is approaching. On the port side a densely populated “town” appears from nowhere. The large hamlet is nestled behind the steep mountainside: Undredal, a roadless hamlet on the western side of the fjord with 200 inhabitants squeezed between precipitous slopes and peaks of over 1700 metres. The glacier has left a moraine at the base of the mountain, sloping down towards the fjord. Forming a stripe down towards the high tide mark are houses. To a little scamp like me, used to living high up the mountains, this amazing sight burns itself into my memory.

Aboard our steamer, a traveller gets ready; puts on his outdoor clothing and finds his luggage in the rack. A visitor will soon arrive in Undredal. Our steamer cannot dock there, so they have to row out to meet us. The engine goes into reverse, a door in the ship’s railing opens and the faering slides calmly alongside the ship. They exchange a few words and the traveller balances in the rowing boat whilst the crew hand over some parcels and post. They wave goodbye and MS Balholm continues quickly on her journey. Around every headland patches of cultivated land appear, barns and houses. At one

ning. Sjølv om dei fleste av ungdomane ønskjer å kome attende til Undredal, er sjansane små, fordi tilgangen på jobbar er avgrensa. Fordi bygda manglar vegforbindelse, er det vanskelig å starta nokon form for næring eller aktivitet som aukar kapasiteten bygda har til å tilby arbeid. Nei, Undredal lid tungt av problema med sentralisering, og folkesetnaden vil nok halde fram med å gå ned.

Even if most of them would like to return to Undredal, they are unlikely to do so because local jobs are few and far between, and as the village is inaccessible by road, establishing new industry to create jobs in the village is difficult. It is fair to say that Undredal suffers heavily as a result of centralisation and the population is likely to continue to decrease.

PENSJONISTAR OG BORN I dag er det mest pensjonistar og born å sjå i Undredal. Den produktive delen av befolkninga er mest berre å sjå i helgane og i høgtider. Dei kjem så ofte som dei kan, for å sjå til dei gamle, ta del i arbeidet på gardane og nyta freden. Og det er stille, alt er roleg, og det er få spor av det stresset som ofte følgjer eit urbant liv. Folk har tid til å slå av ein prat og til å hjelpa kvarandre. Det er ikkje alltid dei strevar etter status og materiell luksus. Det er som ein av dei gamle karane seier: «Vi er heldige så lenge vi slepp å øydeleggja liva våre med støy og skit. Vi har nok med dei to mopedane som vi har i bygda!» Mange av pensjonistane meiner dei har nok med fem gardar og ein einaste butikk. Det er nok så lenge dei har ein brukande levestandard. Og det har dei:

PENSIONERS AND CHILDREN Today, it is largely a community of pensioners and children. The productive members of the population are seen only at weekends and during holidays. They visit as often as possible, to check up on their parents, help on the farms and enjoy the peace. And there is plenty of peace. Everything is calm and there is little sign of the trials and tribulations of urban life.

People have time to chat and to help each other.

Status and material goods are not the be all and end all. As one old man puts it, “We are lucky as long as our lives aren’t ruined by noise and dirt.

Two mopeds in the village are enough!” A lot of the pensioners believe five farms and a simple shop are sufficient. Nothing else is necessary
