It’s been a really wonderful month for our hospital and despite several hurdles our teams right across the Hospital have continued delivering fabulous care with our patient experience results reflecting very positive sentiment.

This is so timely given the forthcoming international days of celebration, our Midwives on 5 May and our Nurses on 12 May.

We have much to celebrate and be thankful for. In terms of outstanding we universally acknowledge the truly wonderful work of our Woman’s Health team who have adjusted so admirably to the significant increase in Obstetric volume following the closure of the Epworth program at the end of March

This has been an enormous challenge for our service undertaking such rapid growth in the middle of a refurbishment, our team’s response has been incredibly professional We have also been very fortunate to welcome many new midwifes to our team which helps us build on our capability and our reputation for great care. Our hospital is extremely committed to a vibrant, safe and highly successful maternity program for years to come.

Our nurses right across our service have helped build an enviable reputation of care and in recent months we’ve also implemented a number of other changes designed to enhance our service This has included changes to the operating hours of our ED program, the implementation of public in private contract in Orthopaedics, the introduction on new robotic technology in theatre and in the week ahead the transition of services locations for our 2N and 2E teams to facilitate growth

So in May we acknowledge our Midwives and Nurses for their contribution and we are also acknowledge gratefully the contribution and support all caregiver continue to make to our hospital.

ANZAC Day

Celebrated annually on April 25, ANZAC Day is one of our nation’s most important days on every Australian’s calendars. This day marks the first major military battle fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during World War I, and is a day for us to commemorate our heroes.

We hope those working on the day were able to enjoy one of our ANZAC biscuits.

World Parkinson's Day

World Parkinson's Day was celebrated on April 11. Did you know that in Australia, there are approximately 219,000 people living with Parkinson's disease, with one in five of these people being diagnosed before the age of 50.

Emergency Department update from Dr Michael Sheridan

The St John of God Emergency Department has had a great start to 2023 with our amended opening hours of 0700-2200 have been deemed a safe and successful change This success has been reflected with some of the best Emergency Department NPS scores with the ED averaging over 80% for February/March /April 2023. We’d like to congratulate all our staff for these results.

’d like to recognise Carla Jabornik who has been our Acting Nurse Unit manager over the last year. She has been outstanding in the role with great organisation skills and exemplary communication & we would like to take this opportunity to thank her for her dedication

We’d also like to welcome back ED NUM Erin Sharpe and look forward to her to re-share her passion for Emergency care within the department.

We have welcomed a lot of new staff over the last few months, but I would particularly like to highlight Bianca Ewart who is joining our ED as our second ‘Emergency Nurse Practitioner ’ She joins Damien Deppeler, as an ‘ENP’ providing nursing led emergency care to a wide range of presentations , working closely with ED Medical staff and Specialists including Orthopaedics & Plastic Surgeons.

Notre-Dame Medical students are also now a core part of the ED team, complimenting the longstanding Deakin Students They have blended well within the ED team and are enjoying their time here in Geelong

As we approach late Autumn and Winter we have started to see an increase in viral illness with RSV Influenza and Covid on the rise, so please make sure you get your vaccinations and wear appropriate PPE in your clinical environment.

Meet Casey Dumont who is not only an amazing goalkeeper for Melbourne Victory, but also a nurse here at St John of God Hospital in Geelong working in our orthopaedic and urology ward!

We're proud to have Casey as part of our healthcare community, and we know firsthand how hardworking and dedicated she is both on and off the field

Mindfulness and Wellbeing on 3 North.

In response to a period of adversity, the 3 North team sought to develop a ‘wellbeing wallet’; practices to assist selfregulation in response to the emotional and physical sensations or feelings that can arise during their workday Using the body as a tool for healing, Tegan Sizer (3 North NUM) and Emma Hay (Quality and Risk Officer) have facilitated sessions involving awareness, breath, movement and sound On Tuesday 21st March, Emma and Tegan invited Anna Waters (Allied Health Music Therapist) to play her guitar to 3 North caregivers whilst Emma lead them through a body scan activity “Sometimes we are so caught up in our stress, we don’t even realise our physical discomfort is connected to our emotional state That’s when a body scan meditation can be particularly useful and effective, allowing us to check in with our bodies,” says Emma, also qualified in yoga teaching with a keen interest and certification in Trauma

Informed Yoga practices

Emily Krahe commented, “Engaging myself in regular wellness sessions has been great for my health and well-being which I thoroughly enjoy I always look forward to the sessions and have some time to reflect, and give time to myself to breathe and unwind before a shift. Being able to learn and incorporate lots of different strategies and techniques that can be used anywhere at any time has been a significant highlight; it’s definitely something that I look forward to each week!”

Amy Munro provided further testament, “Well-being has been a great addition to our days on 3 North. It makes me literally stop and take a breath and refocus on things I can control. Well-being also makes me feel connected to my colleagues, that we are all in this together.”

Day Stay Oncology

The care I received during my visit was really fantastic Paige was my nurse in day stay onc, and she was so caring to me. I also had a lovely volunteer make me a cup of tea and she made me feel so welcome. Thank you to the lovely staff in day onc.

All staff encountered were very kind & helpful & eased any concerns during my overnight stay.

The treatment I received was absolutely amazing. All involved need a medal 1 person was Brendan in CCU, if it wasn't for his support I don't know what I would have done I was so ill but he kept me going. Thanks to all.

Emergency Department

The entire team were exceptional but the absolute standouts were Jen in Triage, ER Nurse Bec & Dr Emad Caring, compassionate & highly skilled, they made me feel like I was their number 1 priority.

The nursing staff were very profession. And had a good sense of humour and were often wise beyond their own profession.

I was very satisfied & well cared for during my overnight stay & even when needing to be wheel chaired to level six for an 8.00am appointment the morning after my eye operation plus nursing staff sorting out with pharmacy & my eye specialist the change needed with eye drops prescribed to obtain them prior to my discharge
