This is a significant change to the way food is prepared in the kitchen, there has been an enormous amount of planning, education and infrastructure modifications that have taken place over the past 6 months, intensifying in the past three months significantly.

Congratulations to everyone involved! Bon appetit!

I would like to acknowledge and thank the catering team under the leadership of Lisa and Alex for their enthusiasm and patience towards the project, particularly during the last week before we changed over, there were tradesman removing and installing new equipment whilst they were preparing and serving meals. It has been a delight to watch them working together as a team to embed the new service.

Keeping In Touch August 2022

I am delighted to introduce Keeping In Touch for the month of August with the good news that we have introduced Room Service as part of our service offering for our patients. Patients are now able to pick their phone up at any time between 6.30am and 8pm and order from our extensive new menu. Patients who require assistance with ordering will still be visited by our friendly and helpful food monitors throughout the day to help select and order their meals.

We can all appreciate new systems and processes can have teething problems that we are currently working through and we are grateful for everyone’s patience as we fully embed room service in the coming days.

This is a fabulous initiative being rolled out by Scott Horn and Libby Tearn across all St John of God Hospitals and we are fortunate to be the third hospital to implement this new service. We thank Scott and Libby for their support to ensure we were in the best position possible when we went live on Wednesday.

Peter and the engineering team along with Peter Maggie from IT have also done an incredible job nutting out problems and coordinating trades to disconnect and reconnect all manner of old and new equipment so the kitchen could be reconfigured to deliver an a-La-carte style menu.

Alex showcased some of the dishes from the new menu, and all who attended unanimously agreed the food was delicious.

We celebrate the birth of a new baby with the beautiful resonance of the Brahms Lullaby playing across the hospital, it brings joy and warms the heart...

Did you know, we also acknowledge the end of life of someone in our care when playing the Going Home melody? It is played as a way of honouring one of our patients whose life on earth has just come to an end, a final send off and dedication to them.

Big CONGRATULATIONS to Michael Farago from 3 East on receiving the July Caregiver of the Month award! “Mick is a natural born leader and has always been a passionate and committed member of 3 East. He is a strong patient advocate and will speak up when he sees anything that is not best practice or safe. He will also stick up for his colleagues and will speak out if help is needed. He will always help others with a cheerful attitude. Mick has also spent a lot of time reorganizing our store room which has been a huge help to the team. Furthermore, Mick has taken leadership in coordinating and organising our COVID COVE which is a specific area of the ward for COVID patients. He has gone above and beyond to ensure that communication is clear, and the system works, to overall ensure patient safety. I sincerely hope Mick is recognised for his outstanding hard work lately.”

Caregiver of the Month - July 2022

The ‘Going Home’ melody was composed by Music Thanatologist Peter Roberts, and the original musical phrase is by Antonin Dvorak. The ‘Going Home’ title comes from the spiritual song lyrics in the image above.

If one of your team members is going the extra mile - put your nomination in by the end of the month to GLExecAdmin@sjog.org.au. The nomination form can be found on CORA. Acknowledging new life and death - PA announcements

The Kindness Kart has been out and about in the hospital. Our 2 East team recently welcomed some well deserved love and attention. As a small gesture of our appreciation, team members enjoyed items off the Kindness Kart which has been made possible by the kind and generous donation from Kane Construction and the St John of God Foundation.

National Child Protection Week 4-10 September

National Child Protection Week will continue to embrace the overarching message that ‘Every child, in every community, needs a fair go’. In particular, this year we will be shining a light on children growing up safe and supported. Let’s talk about how we create a supportive environment for every child. To create awareness around child protection, we will be sharing a word search with our caregivers next week for a chance to win a prize! Don’t miss out on our display at the hospital’s main reception area.

Don’t forget, you can also celebrate the extraordinary work happening throughout the organisation by sending your fellow caregivers an e-card.

Introducing our new Value in focus

At St John of God Health Care, we are part of a long line of caregivers who have watched and learnt from those who came before us. This tradition continues today, through caregiver FormationFormation. is a process of reflective practice, which supports the ongoing development of caregivers, both personally and communally. It gives us an opportunity to recognise how we make our values a lived reality each day. This is how we see our Mission in action. Every year, we highlight one of our values through our online Formation module. In 2023 the value in focus is Excellence.

Regardless of who we are and what we do when we are at work, we are all here to enrich the patient and client experience, delivering it with excellence. Excellence is not just about what we do, but how we do it, through our collective endeavours.

As an attitude, Excellence drives us to be open to new ideas, enabling us to continually enhance our service delivery. You are now invited to complete the Excellence Formation module. Alternatively, you can find it on MyLearning. Please complete it as soon as you are able. It is an opportunity to reflect on our purpose, and a reminder to remain focused on what is important, because we all care deeply for those we serve.

You have such an amazing process, kindness and streamlined care. Well done. Your team is really professional. I am so confident in the care and competence of nurses and medical and associated employees in admin and hotel services. I hope I don’t need your services again but feel safe in St John’s hands. God bless you all.

Graeme said: 5 stars I wish to thank all the staff that I interacted with during visits over two days. All the staff were dedicated and provided sensitive treatment. Thanks to those who I interacted with, and those who work in the back rooms of a very professional hospital. If I need to have further treatment I would be extremely happy to return again to your hospital.

AttentionPatientSouthfeedbackbythenursingand care assistants was outstanding and made a potentially worrying time very comfortable. I felt part of the treatment and care process and was sufficiently informed and engaged to contribute to decision making. In particular involvement in nursing shift handovers provided regular assurance of planning and progress.
