Keeping In Touch April 2022

Welcome to a bumper edition of KIT. April has been another month filled with plenty of activity. We celebrated Easter in a variety of ways, Easter reflections were placed on patient meal trays, a lovely display was created by the Pastoral Care Team in the foyer and there were Easter eggs and hot cross buns delivered to all departments in the week leading into Easter.

Upcoming Events: Bowel Cancer Awareness Month May

International Midwives Day Thursday 5 May

Global Hand Hygiene Day Thursday 5 May

Our online Patient Admission Portal went live, allowing patients to submit their hospital admission and health information into a digital portal, reducing the need for paperwork to be posted or dropped off to the hospital. There is 7 day a week support for patients and their families who may need asiis with using the portal. Thanks to the team behind the scenes who have been working tirelessly to ensure the implementation is a success and enhances our patients and VMO’s experience with our hospital.

Mother’s Day

The footy tipping competition certainly ramped up this year and has 92 tipsters participating with a number of people jostling each week for the top position. The weekly prizes attest to the fact you don’t have to be at the top of the ladder to be a winner. This week’s lucky winner was Emma Cameron from the Allied Health team. Prizes have included $25 Café Costa vouchers.

Keeping In Touch is a newsletter for you. We would like to invite all caregivers to submit ideas, stories, photos and feedback to share. We know you’re all doing fabulous work - tell us about it!

We welcomed a bumper number of new caregivers this month and were lucky enough to be able to host our hospital orientation face to face. We have featured them in this edition so you can see the diverse number of departments they will be working in. Have a lovely weekend!

Farewell Jessie!

My Admissions Patient Portal - now open!

Jessie came to SJGGH a year after her graduate year at the age of 21. She initially worked on the “old” 2 North, looking after Orthopaedic, Urology, Plastics, Vascular and ENT patients - she was a keen and enthusiastic nurse and was always up for fun often referred to “as the life of a party”.

Geelong patients will now be presented with the new My Admissions patient portal link to enter their admission registration and health questionnaire details, replacing paper forms that we have been using.

Her passion for Orthopaedics saw her transition into the Orthopaedic Care Coordinator role. Jessie has made a huge contribution to our Orthopaedic patients, VMO’s and 2 East. After 17 years Jessie decided a change was needed and she has taken on a similar role at UGH, although focussing mainly on Urology.

The new My Admission portal has been successfully implemented at Berwick and given that every hospital’s admission process is different, we encourage all caregivers to support the Admissions and Preadmission teams as we learn to navigate this new forum in providing better and more convenient services to our patients and their families.

We will miss Jessie and thank her for the contribution she has made.

ANZAC Day 2022 Celebrated annually on April 25, ANZAC Day is one of our nation’s most important days on every Australian’s calendars. This day marks the first major military battle fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during World War I, and is a day for us to commemorate our heroes. Thank you to Ros Pollard for making ANZAC Day a memorable one giving caregivers and patients the opportunity to view the beautiful displays and remember our fallen heroes. We also thank veteran Gordon Traill for his generosity on loaning his artwork and photography for this entire week, and also volunteering his time to speak with our caregivers and patients about his Invictus Games photography and his journey.

A bittersweet farewell...

We bid farewell to two of our long-serving caregivers, Deb Hardiman, theatre ANUM who dedicated 32 years caring for patients and Sue Baker, a Domiciliary Midwife who supported our maternity patients for 29 years! What a legacy they both leave behind! Both Sue and Deb begun their nursing training together in the same group ar Barwon Health and have shared a strong friendship over the years, and decided to retire on the same day. Their colleagues and teams have only praise for their dedication, wealth of knowledge and the level of compassion and care they demonstrated to their patients and families. They both have devoted so much to patients over the years, and we wish them nothing but the very best as they embark on this new chapter of life!

I was admitted for an overnighter for Arthroscopy under the management of Mr David Bowyer. What a great orthopaedic surgeon and generally top man. The nurses, anaesthetist, physio and all the staff were very caring and easy to get along with. Issuing pain relief medication was the best service received for a long time. Much more friendly and professional than some Epworth Hospital staff in Waurn Ponds. Special thanks to Manpreet, Deeksha and Jess. Fantastic nurses. Cheers. Keep up great caring work!

What our patients had to say about us this week... ED

Patient feedback Very caring and clear information provided. I felt at ease throughout my time there. Although the ED was busy the doctor took the time to talk to me and examine me with care. Overall excellent service and medical care by all the staff.

Surgery Centre Patient feedback

Lovely nursing staff, they made me feel very comfortable in their care. The facilities were lovely and clean. Very comfy armchair in the admissions waiting area while I was waiting to go through to theatre. Not the usual hustle and bustle of other hospital wards. Very friendly nursing staff including the anaesthetist and surgeon. Hopefully I don’t have to return, but if I do, I’d be happy to visit SJOG specialist suites again.

Patient feedback

Staff, very friendly, professional and caring. Meals lovely though coffee needs improvement, food standard high, room cleaning good. But the nursing stood out!

Day Stay Oncology Patient feedback
