During our travels to the wards visiting and delivering mega cupcakes to caregivers I heard many comments from caregivers about how nice it was to celebrate and acknowledge International Nurses Day.

National Reconciliation Week

International Nurses Day and International Day of the Midwife is celebrated around the world to recognise the remarkable contributions nurses and midwives make every day. I am in awe of what you do - you turn up to work despite the challenges, you speak up for our patients and support them through their hospital experience and you make a difference to the delivery of quality care and patient outcomes. For this and so much more, thank you!

NAIDOC Week

We had 28 new caregivers attend orientation this week covering a diverse number of roles and departments across the hospital. Have a lovely weekend!

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the vital role our nurses play in providing essential health care to every patient has become all the more visible. Despite the increased pressure, our nurses continue to prioritise the health and wellbeing of our patients and clients. For that, we are deeply grateful. To our nurses, thank you for your efforts. We know it has been challenging and we have asked a lot of you, and your response has been amazing. You have made a real difference at this time, no matter whether you have been on the frontline, adapted and changed your role in response to need, continued your normal duties or worked behind the scenes. The international theme for this year is Nurses: A Voice to Lead - Invest in Nursing and respect rights to secure global health, which focuses on the need to protect, support and invest in the nursing profession to strengthen health systems around the world. We hope you enjoyed a delicious cupcake if you were working and may have had time to enjoy some of the comments from our nurses as to why they became a nurse displayed in the hospital foyer.

Influenza vaccinations clinic is now open!

Appointment of Manager for Women and Newborn Services We are pleased to welcome Melisa Gualfredo to our Women’s Health Unit. Melisa has been appointed as our new Manager for Women & Newborn Services.

Melisa comes to us with extensive clinical and management experience in a variety of roles including Midwife/RN/ANUM and NUM. Melisa brings us her experience from Northern Health, Epping where she has successfully implemented innovative models of care and led her team in providing high standards of care through focus on quality improvements. Melisa commenced in the role on Monday 9 May. Please join us in congratulating and welcoming Melisa to our St John of God Geelong family!

3 North Nurse Unit Manager - Maternity Leave Cover We are pleased to announce, following an internal Expression of Interest (EOI), that Tegan Sizer will commence as the 3 North - Nurse Unit Manager whilst Simone Palmer undertakes maternity leave. Tegan has been with the 3 North team since 2018, progressing to an Associate Nurse Unit Manager position in the same year. During this time she has had the opportunity to undertake a (Monday to Friday) Clinical Management position, where she has showed great aptitude for the role, strong leadership and an excellent rapport with not only the 3 North team, but also the greater nursing leadership team, demonstrating her ability to undertake the role effectively. Please join us in welcoming and supporting Tegan in her upcoming maternity relief position of Nurse Unit Manager.

Appointment of Nurse Unit Manager 3 East Following the recruitment campaign for a Nurse Unit Manager of 3 East, we welcome Karl Villalba as the successful candidate.

Karl brings to the role extensive Medical and Surgical nursing experience in the Philippines, New Zealand and more recently, on 3 East as a Registered Nurse. Karl has significant clinical and leadership experience and held both Nurse in Charge (ANUM Equivalent) and Nursing Coordinator (NUM Equivalent) positions during his career. Karl is a passionate leader who is keen to support his team to be the best that they can be. He is highly motivated, enthusiastic and feels supported and encouraged by the current 3 East team. Please join us in congratulating and supporting Karl as he transitions into his new role.

National Reconciliation Week

The end of May marks the start of National Reconciliation Week (27 May - 3 June 2022), which is a reminder of the importance of St John of God Health Care creating genuine and strong partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities towards Reconciliation.

We are pleased to be able to offer all caregivers the chance to participate in a range of virtual and face-to-face activities, which is a common part of life now, and allows everyone to be involved no matter where they are or what they are doing. Events: • NRW Virtual Breakfast – 27 May 10.00am to 12.00pm (EST). The event is split into 30 minute sections so you can choose to attend the time that suits you and your team best. Hospitals, services, departments, teams or individuals can register to attend online. • Explore the National Reconciliation Week website to find events close to you and we encourage everyone to participate in your local activities. • Walk for Reconciliation is on Sunday 22 May, 10.00am to 3.00pm at Johnstone Park. This is a free event for all and we encourage caregivers to participate.

Expression of Interest Orthopaedic Case Coordinator 0.4 FTE Grade 4 (Job Share Position) (Internal applicants only) We are seeking expressions of interest from Experienced (Min. 3-5 Years post graduate Orthopaedic Experience) and/or Post Graduate Qualified Orthopaedic Nurses to job share the current Full Time Orthopaedic Case Coordinator Role. Supporting our Orthopaedic Visiting Medical Officers and our Orthopaedic Patients throughout their journey of care, this role is pivotal in our continued service and success. Working collaboratively with the Multidisciplinary team, the Orthopaedic Case Coordinator is responsible for the Clinical Nursing Coordination for all Orthopaedic patients, including Pre-Admission, Inpatient Episode Management, Length of Stay Management and All Discharge Planning / Preparation and Discharge / Integration of our patient’s back into the community.

The successful candidate will have: •

Ability to work within and contribute to the Mission and Values of St John of God Health Care.

•

Min. 3-5 years post graduate Orthopaedic experience and/or Post Graduate Orthopaedic Qualification

•

High level communication skills with the ability to relate to people across the organisation, including our Visiting Medical Officers.

•

Excellent organisational and prioritisation skills and the ability to work autonomously.

•

What wonderful service I received for my 11 month old Mason! From night shift to day shift, we were there for a long 12 hours however we were treated so wonderfully by all staff. Nothing was too hard, everything was explained, some jokes and banter to pass the time. No one pushed us to head home earlier, they ensured all bases were covered. I would love them to know they are appreciated and I am very grateful. Special thanks to Dr Rod, nurses Liz and Chelsea!

Our son Daryl has an intellectual disability so when we arrived at emergency they were so helpful and friendly at put him at ease instantly. Also the Doctor was wonderful with Daryl. I can’t thank you enough for all your care.

The staff were fantastic with my son, they were kind, caring and very reassuring for him & me. Nurses Kerry and Jenny at Koala Cove were exceptional. They really made sure my son had a positive first hospital experience, thank you so much!

The efficiency and friendliness of the oncology department. Annette and Kelly were very caring. Asked questions at length and were attentive to my needs. Done cheerfully. I am not there for a good reason but all the staff try and make your stay as pleasant possible including Trish.
