Prepare Your Family for an Earthquake!

Did you know Utah is earthquake country? Most of us live in areas where a big quake could happen, and being prepared can make all the difference. That’s why we’re encouraging all South Jordan families, businesses, and organizations to take part in the Great Utah ShakeOut on Thursday, April 17, 2025, at 10:15 a.m.

This statewide earthquake drill is a chance for you, your family, and even your workplace or school to practice what to do if the ground starts shaking.

How to Participate

It’s simple! Here’s what you can do to get ready:

1. Sign Up – Visit ShakeOut.org/Utah to register. You’ll get reminders and resources to help make the drill more effective.

2. Practice “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” – When the drill starts at 10:15 a.m., everyone should:

• Drop to your hands and knees.

• Cover your head and neck (and get under a sturdy table if possible).

• Hold On until the shaking stops.

3. Talk About It – Use this as a chance to make an emergency plan. Where will your family meet after an earthquake? Do you have enough food, water, and supplies?

4. Make It Fun! – If you have kids, turn it into a game. Let them find safe spots in your home or practice a pretend earthquake with stuffed animals.

Why It’s Important

Earthquakes can happen with no warning, and knowing what to do ahead of time can help keep your family safe. Practicing together makes it easier to react quickly and calmly when it really matters.

Mark your calendar for April 17 at 10:15 a.m. and join thousands of Utahns in the ShakeOut! The more we practice, the safer we’ll be. Visit ShakeOut.org/Utah to learn more!

Would You Like to Open a City Council Meeting?

The City invites any who are willing to volunteer their time a chance to open our city council meeting with a thought, prayer, reading, or invocation. The purpose is to allow a wide variety of community members to speak and become involved in our civic process. The presentations are intended to be nondenominational and non-proselytizing in character; however, the City will not dictate the form or content of any such presentation.

If you would like to schedule a presentation for the opening ceremony at a city council meeting, South Jordan City Council meets the first and third Tuesday of each month. Presentations are less than two minutes.

If you’d like to present, reach out to the city recorder, Anna Crookston, and let her know if you would like the presentation to be listed as a prayer, reading, or thought.

FREE event for families featuring live music, free face painting, free balloons, caricature artists, and art for sale.

Saturday May 3, 10, 17, 24 from 10 AM–1 PM

Inmy family, spring has always meant one thing— baseball. I’d say that’s doubly true for South Jordan residents, especially this year!

This season marks an exciting new chapter for baseball in our city. The long-standing Bingham Baseball program is now officially part of South Jordan’s recreation offerings and will be known as “SoJo Baseball.” While the program will still compete in the Wasatch League and operate much the same way, we’re committed to continuous improvements every year. We’re thrilled to expand our SoJo Recreation programming and carry forward South Jordan’s strong baseball tradition.

Baseball has deep roots in South Jordan. Many may not know that back in 1883, when our city was called Gale, we had a team known as the “Red Gales”—a testament to our community’s long love for America’s favorite pastime.

Fast forward to today, and South Jordan is now home to the Salt Lake Bees, with their inaugural season at the new ballpark kicking off this year. The ballpark, along with the surrounding urban center, will bring exciting new opportunities for economic development, housing, transit, and recreation. We recognize that change can bring challenges, and the City is committed to working closely with residents, Daybreak, and The Larry H. Miller Company to address concerns and make adjustments as needed—whether it’s traffic, parking, or public safety. We appreciate your patience as we navigate these changes, and if you see something that needs attention, let us know!

I also want to take a moment to answer some common questions about the ballpark and urban center project:

• Is this funded by taxpayer dollars? No. This is a privately funded project—built, designed, and paid for by a private company.

• Is the ballpark only for Daybreak residents? Absolutely not! While it’s located in a masterplanned community, the ballpark, businesses, and amenities are open to everyone—residents and visitors alike.

We’re excited to welcome this new chapter of baseball, entertainment, and community to South Jordan. As we embrace all that spring brings, let’s channel that energy, grab our gloves, and PLAY BALL!
